MCCAFFREY AND ROMAINE MEET WITH LINDENHURST CHAMBER

On Wednesday, March 12th, the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting had a special guest speaker in Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine! Joining with County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata, the group discussed several ongoing projects in the greater Lindenhurst area as well as a rundown of “current events” within County government. They also recognized the reopening of Ruby Soho’s!

Mayor Michael Lavorata has announced that the Arbor Day Foundation has again named the Village

Lindenhurst Named Tree City USA Community

of Lindenhurst, NY, a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. “We are pleased

and honored to be given this designation from the Arbor Day Foundation for the 36th year”, stated Mayor Lavorata.

The Arbor Day Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

“We all benefit when communities like Lindenhurst place a high priority on planting and caring for trees, one of our nation’s most beautiful resources,” added Trustee Doug Madlon. “Trees shade our homes and add beauty to our neighborhoods, and they also provide many environmental, economic and social benefits.”

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Lindenhurst has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community.

Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Communities that earn Tree City USA recognition not only have taken the time to meet the four standards, they know that trees:

• Promote healthier communities by filtering the air we breathe by removing dust and other particles.

• Moderate climate, conserve water and provide vital habitat for wildlife.

• Reduce the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings.

• Reduce energy use and increase property values. About the Arbor Day Foundation

The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental and education organization of more than 1 million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information on the Foundation and its programs can be found at www.arborday.org.

Passover is a Jewish celebration that typically occurs around the same time as Christian Easter. In 2025, Passover begins the evening of Saturday, April 12 to Sunday, April 20, 2025. According to the religious resource My Jewish Learning, Passover is a festival of freedom that marks the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their freedom from slavery.

Passover Is A Celebration Of Freedom

The term “Passover,” which is also known as “Pesach,” coordinates with a key moment in religious history.

According to texts, the Egyptian Pharaoh refused to liberate the children of Israel, despite requests from Moses and his brother, Aaron. The pharaoh was warned that his people would be punished if the pharaoh did not comply.

Persistent and obstinate in his refusal, Pharaoh was subjected to 10 plagues, each more devastating than the previous one. These plagues included blood, frogs, bugs, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally the demise of all firstborn males. To be spared the penultimate devastation, Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb for a meal and to

mark their doors with its blood. The Lord would see the blood and pass over that household, sparing the occupants’ sons.

Because Passover is so symbolic, Passover seders, which take place either on the first Friday or both the first and second Friday of Passover, feature many traditions. It is customary to read the Haggadah at the seder table, but celebrants

who cannot come together may share these important stories, blessings, and songs via an online video chat.

In addition, if Passover celebrants cannot make it to the store or find all of the ingredients for their seder plates, substitutions may need to be made.

Traditionally, an egg, bitter herbs, a shank bone, parsley, haroset (chopped mixed nuts, fruits, and cinnamon),

and lettuce are included. Celebrants can even experiment with making unleavened bread at home if necessary. If horseradish for a bitter herb is unavailable, any item that can cause tears, such as ginger or raw lemon, may be substituted. Passover is an important part of Jewish history and a holiday that is celebrated each year with vigor.

7 Activities To Commemorate The Spring Equinox

busy time, and one that people can commemorate in many unique ways. Here are seven ideas to usher in spring this March.

1. Fill a home or business with flowers. Collect some early tulip or daffodil blooms and place them around the house. Offer bouquets of dandelions to children or weave them into flower crowns.

2. Spend time in nature. It’s time to get outside, and there is no better time to do so than the beginning of spring. Soak up the sun and temperate climate, which can be good for your physical and mental well-being.

3. Visit a loved one. Bring some sunshine to an elderly relative by visiting with him or her.

Take a stroll outside or sit on a bench and enjoy a picnic.

4. Prepare the garden by cleaning out weeds and tilling the soil. Some early spring preparation ensures everything will be ready when planting time arrives.

5. Prepare an outdoor feast. Whether it’s a picnic or a barbecue, serve up a warm-

weather feast with salads, sandwiches and other dishes that are normally served outdoors.

6. Sow some seeds. Encourage each member of your household to pick a favorite plant or flower and sow it in celebration of the first day of spring. It’s possible to make a special spring garden

with perennials that will bloom each year.

7. Make spring-related crafts. Colorful wreaths, centerpieces and garlands can bring some of the natural wonders of spring indoors. The first day of spring is an opportunity to enjoy what makes the season so special. Celebrate the new season with plenty of creative ideas.
