Weddings have a tendency to be expensive endeavors.

According to The Knot’s 2018 Real Weddings Study, the national average cost of a wedding is $33,931. Nearly half of that ($15,439) is spent on the reception venue alone.

As expensive as wedding receptions can be, couples should know that there are many ways to reduce reception costs without sacrificing fun.

1. Choose Foods Wisely Pour over the details of catering costs. The Knot says the average price for catering will be $68 per person. If you opt for an appetizers and cocktails reception, you may be able to shave several dollars off the bill. Look closely at the pricing for buffet versus plated meals.

WEDDING FLOWERS - Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings.

Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table.

The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. He prefers guests enter the wedding and have their senses stimulated by flowers from all angles.

Large flower installations, as well as blooms popping up in unexpected places, are some of the hot trends for couples to keep their eyes on.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility.

Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened.

When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

In 2016, Lindenhurst Union Free School District teacher John Mansfield spearheaded the First Book campaign for the Lindenhurst community and was able to secure a total of 7,000 new books for distribution to the children of Lindenhurst. Each pallet received contained books leveled for students in preschool through eighth grade. As such, books were distributed to all Lindenhurst UFSD elementary schools, the middle school and several community preschools.

This year, the drive netted an additional collection of books to establish a library for the district’s Lindenhurst Academy.

Additionally, books were provided to the English Language Arts Department of the Lindenhurst High School and Middle School for the distribution of books to enhance or establish classroom libraries.

Calonita spoke about her early days of writing as an entertainment

journalist, a position she held for 10 years prior to writing her first young adult series, “Secrets of My Hollywood Life.” She shared with the students how she came to write various book series including “Fairy Tale Reform School,” “Royal Academy Rebels” and “Twisted Tales.”
