50TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS
We have special historical displays from the May 18, 1969 grand opening celebration in the lobby showcase, as well as a display detailing the fabrication of the Windows on Wellwood Memorial to Lindenhurst’s Veterans, that is showcased inside the library. On May 18, our festivities will run all day with the following special events that we invite the Lindenhurst community to participate in with us: Tie Dye T-Shirts sponsored by the Friends of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, come ready to get your hands messy as you tie-dye a t-shirt to keep. You can also choose to bring a shirt you already own to tie-dye, from 9:00 am - 11:00 am in the Backyard. No registration. First come first served for t-shirts.
10:00am - 10:45am. Join the Library Board of Trustees, local dignitaries and library staff as we officially kick off a day of groovy fun with the creation and burial of a time capsule for future generations to open in 2046, when the library turns 100! Before heading over to our other programs and events, snap a photo using our green screen to transport yourself back to the 60’s. No registration!
Groovy Storytime
11:00am - 11:45am. Discover some hidden gems from the past! Listen to stories from the 1960’s and create a super groovy craft. Stories geared for preschool – primary grade children. Local author Maria Bohrer will be on hand as well to share her book, Sophia’s Stoop Story: 18th Street, Brooklyn. Registration begins May 1. LNJ435
Woodstock and the Music of the 60’s
1:00pm - 2:00pm. Experience a musical flashback to the Woodstock Music Festival and the hit rock songs of 1969. Original 45’s will play the tunes, along with photos and videos, to enhance this informative multi-media event. Registration begins May 1 LNA537
1969 vs 2019 Family Challenge
1:00pm - 2:00pm. Grab the family and join in on the action. Compete against other families to see who is crowned the champion of trivia! Registration begins May 1. LNJ135
Our Generation Live Concert
2:00pm - 3:00pm. Celebrate the music of the 60s and 70s at this family friendly show in the Backyard with band Our Generation! Registration begins May 1 LNA538
They Ate What in 1969?
3:30pm - 4:30pm. Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the building by making some super yummy food from 1969. Registration begins May 1. LNJ134
Windows on Wellwood and Flag Tribute to Local Veteran Annabelle Weiss
3:45pm - 4:30pm. Did you know the beautiful stained glass windows were created to honor local veterans? Join us for a walk through the project, learn about the meaning of the blue and gold stars on the glass, and see our other veteran memorabilia. We will conclude with a flag ceremony that will swap the flag on the Library’s flagpole to the one given to the family of the late Annabelle Weiss, a Lindenhurst World War II Veteran and library lover.
