Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should

know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Only a dad, with a tired face, Coming home from the daily race, Bringing little of gold or fame, To show how well he has played the game, But glad in his heart that his own rejoice To see him come, and to hear his voice.

Only a dad, with a brood of four, One of ten million men or more. Plodding along in the daily strife, Bearing the whips and the scorns of life, With never a whimper of pain or hate, For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud, Merely one of the surging crowd

Toiling, striving from day to day, Facing whatever may come his way, Silent, whenever the harsh condemn, And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad, but he gives his all, To smooth the way for his children small Doing, with courage stern and grim, e deeds that his father did for him. is is the line that for him I pen, Only a dad, but the best of men.

SCPD Distributes Over 100 Doses Of Narcan At 5K The Beat Lives On Run In Lindenhurst At The Venetian Shores Park Participants Also Made Memorial Rocks Honoring Those Lost

More than 50 participants in the May 18, 2025 The Beat Lives On 5K run to honor CJ Neumann were trained by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in the use of Narcan, the antidote to an overdose, and received a kit containing two doses of the antidote. Research indicates that fentanyl is now the number one cause of death in the United States for people between the ages of 18-45 years.

The training was conducted by SCPD Emergency Medical Service Officers Jason Byron and Alex Trzepizur, who work closely with the SCPD’s Behavioral Health Unit.

“The number of people who were willing to take five minutes out of their day to learn about opioids, fentanyl and the overdose epidemic was impressive,” said Byron.

Visitors also stopped by a table with purple rocks intended to be decorated with the names of loved ones lost to overdose and fentanyl poisoning.

Called the Purple Rock Project by the mothers who provide the rocks, the finished rocks are placed around parks and other locations, including Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Garden at Suffolk County Environmental Center

at the Scully Estate, 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip, as a reminder of how many Long Islanders have died from O.D. and fentanyl poisonings.

“Writing a child’s name on a rock may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the world that their child was once here,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018 to a fentanyl poisoning.

For more information about the memorial rocks and “The Purple Rock Project” contact Carole Trottere at catrottere@ gmail.com

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops

Families celebrate Dad in unique ways on Father’s Day. Gifts are customary, but so is a delicious meal Dad will love. Many dads will appreciate a meal that goes above and beyond the ordinary, preferably something that is hearty and delicious. These “Pecan-Stuffed Pork Chops” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) are a great dish to serve family style when everyone gathers around the table for Father’s Day.

Serves 7-8

1 large rack of pork chops, bones in

4 tablespoons butter

1⁄2 yellow onion, chopped

2 ribs celery, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS:

Clean the rack of pork well and cut in between the bones to get thick individual pork chops. Cut a large slit down the back side of each chop and insert the tip of a knife 2 to 3 inches inside the chop to create a pocket for the stuffing. Do not poke completely through the pork or the stuffing will not stay in. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion, celery and garlic until the onion has slightly softened. Add the chicken stock, salt and cayenne and bring to a light simmer. Pour the contents into a mixing bowl and

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 cups panko bread crumbs

2 cups

2 cups roasted pecans, chopped

More kosher salt and pepper, to taste

add the panko bread crumbs and pecans. Mix together and let cool to room temperature. Stuff as much of the mixture into each pork chop as will fit (overstuffing is okay, too). Sprinkle both sides of each chop with salt and pepper to taste, then roast in a preheated 400 F oven for 12 minutes. Turn the chops over once and roast an additional 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. Cook to medium, or 135 to 140 F.

Presiding Officer McCaffrey Honors Skyway Pest Management In Celebration Of Small Businesses

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the Suffolk County Legislature gathered to recognize small businesses throughout Suffolk County. Presiding Officer McCaffrey was proud to recognize Skyway Pest Management for their role as an integral small business leader in Legislative District Fourteen!

Each year, the Suffolk County Legislature gathers to honor local small businesses and note the unique contributions they make to their communities every day. The businessesranging from restaurants, including pizzerias and delis, to insurance agencies, to local newspapers and salons – were each chosen for their standing within their community and were often cited for their civic and charitable endeavors.

“Our small businesses deserve to be recognized for their part in making Suffolk

a thriving and desirable place to live,” said Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey.

“From my district, I was pleased to honor Skyway Pest Management of Lindenhurst. Skyway has been voted Bethpage’s Best of Long Island in the category Best Exterminating Company for nine years.

For the past 16 years, Guy Schaefer, who has been in the pest control industry for 35 years, has owned and operated Skyway. In 2023, Guy received the Town of Babylon Rich Schaffer Outstanding Business Award.”

“Guy is a devoted father to his three beautiful daughters and a “Pop-Pop” to his freespirted granddaughter. He is a proud member of the Copiague community where he grew up and raised his family. Even though his girls are grown, they all still reside in the town. He has been on the Board of Directors

for the Copiague Chamber of Commerce for 16 years and currently serves as Vice President. He enjoys being a part of the Chamber, as well as other organizations such as Kids Need More, while giving back to the community as much as he can,” said McCaffrey.

Across the United States, there are more than 33 million small businesses. They employ nearly half the American workforce and represent almost 44% of America’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the US Chamber of Commerce. Suffolk County itself is home to thousands of small businesses. As a mark of the number and variety of small businesses, the Suffolk County Department Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs notes that there are over 15,800 active licenses and registrations for a wide range of businesses and contractors.

High Expectations A Brand New Comedy-Drama

MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run Event Saturday, June 21, 2025

National Little League is proud to be a host of MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run event in 2025, providing a unique experience for youth athletes. This free and fun event will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, and is open to all kids ages 7-14, whether they currently play Little League or not. They can come from any town, and all skill levels are welcome!

The event is taking place at Kienle Memorial Field in Fireman’s Park, located on Heiling Boulevard in Lindenhurst.

Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) local events allow youth organizations, such as LNLL, an opportunity to provide a free and high-quality experience for boys and girls to showcase their baseball and softball skills, with the opportunity of earning a chance to attend and compete for a Championship during the 2025 MLB World Series!

The Pitch, Hit & Run program is a free event series for boys and girls and consists of a series of movements that are

important in baseball and softball. They will be tested, and their measurements will be recorded for points. Based on their scores, they will advance from a Local Event to a Team Championship and then to the Finals hosted at the World Series.

High Expectations, a brand new comedydrama, will have its world premiere at BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst on June 13. The play, presented by Debut Theater Company, will run Friday June 13 at 7:30 pm, Saturday June 14 and June 21 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday June 22 at 1:30 pm. The BACCA theater is located at 149 North Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst.

The play will also run at St. Paul’s Playhouse, 270 Main St., Northport, on Saturday June 28 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday June 29 at 1:30 pm.

In this charming story about lonely people hoping to find love, an old fashioned matchmaker tries her best to help an assortment of slightly-oddball clients, both young and notso-young, fit together happily. Her neighbor, who runs the local brothel directly overhead in their old NYC building, helps keep her business “grounded.”

Featured are Long Island actors Katie Schrader, Dan Bellusci, Deborah Rupy, Jonathan Baker, Missy Roche, and Richard Wright. The playwright is Anthony DiFranco, and the director is Martin Knapp.

Tickets for High Expectations in both the Lindenhurst venue and the Northport venue are available online at debutco.booktix.com

Tickets are $23, or $20 for Seniors. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

Did You Know?

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

Junior Mayor Attends Village Board Meeting

The Village Board welcomed a special guest at its most recent meeting: Junior Mayor Olivia Barthelmes, who stepped up to the podium to share her thoughts and participate in local government firsthand.

Olivia addressed the Village Board regarding block party regulations and

suggested some changes, including extending the permitted hours.

Following her remarks, Olivia joined the Board at the dais and took part in the evening’s agenda, demonstrating strong engagement and a keen interest in civic leadership. She even had the honor of making the motion to

adjourn the meeting—an experience that capped off a memorable night for this young leader in the making.

“We were proud to have Olivia join us,” said Mayor Mike Lavorata “Her participation reflects the spirit of involvement and future leadership we value in our village.”

In just 12 days on market, with a carefully tailored strategy, I was able to bring to my sellers multiple strong offers way over asking. It wasn’t luck. It was listening . It was marketing with intent. It was negotiating with clarity. If you’re thinking about selling, know this: I don’t just list homes. I position them. I tell their story. And I deliver results that speak for themselves. Let’s begin with a conversation.
