This familyfocused event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, NY and recognized the personal stories of struggles with addiction, while highlighting the efforts of others who provide them with life-saving support. painful stories create the momentum needed to push life-saving legislation through our local and state governments. Media Champion Mr. Scaglia is the Editor of Special Sections for Anton Community Newspapers, and his coverage of the drug crisis on Long Island has helped raise awareness, especially among parents of teens who are at risk for substance abuse. As the CEO and CoFounder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI), Community Champion Dr. McLellan has a long history of leadership in the field of substance abuse, and his research has shaped policy on each level of the public sphere. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. McLellan was the Science Advisor and Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a congressionally confirmed Presidential appointment to help shape the nation’s public policy approach to illicit drug use. At ONDCP, Dr. McLellan worked on a broad range of drug issues, including the formulation and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy and promotion of drug treatment through the broader redesigning of the national health care system. For over thirty years, Treatment Champion Patricia Hincken, LCSWR, CASAC, CPP has advocated for and expanded the services that are available for Long Island’s chemically dependent citizens. Ms. Hincken currently serves as the Director of Addiction Recovery Services at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Having dedicated her career to studying addiction and providing treatment, she says she is “continually inspired by staff and patients, and finds the journey through addiction and recovery remarkable.”

Scaglia of Anton Community Newspapers. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds described the event, “It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future.” Across Long Island, families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction. January 2013 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Long Island Blue Jays Junior Drum Inc., making this corps the second oldest continuous drum and bugle corps in the state of New York. Over the years, they have been helping youth, ages 1019, with advancement in playing brass and percussion instruments in the field of marching music. Some of these members want to learn to play a second instrument, while others are beginners with no musical experience. They are currently recruiting members for the corps. For the small fee of $15 per year, the student will receive lessons, both private and with the group, from the teaching staff, which has a combined experience of over 100 years of drum corps. Also, they provide the instruments so that you can practice at home. If you would like to be a part of this musical tradition on Long Island, you can contact 631.589.5047 for additional information.

Join The Madness

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I

would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure

and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will donate a portion of the proceeds from the 76th Annual Mercy Ball to benefit local Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The December 1st event at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City begins the hospital’s 2013 Centennial Celebration. “As we support the hospital as it begins its second century, we feel it is equally important to support the community’s recovery from the catastrophic impact of the storm and its aftermath,” said Friends of Mercy president Christopher Kearns of Rockville Centre. “And all are welcome to join us in that effort by attending or supporting the event.” The chairman for the event this year is threedecade Rockville Centre resident Tom Alexanderson, who is well-

known for his leadership in community activities. Three major awards will be presented: •John F. Coghlan of Rockville Centre, retired from a distinguished career in investment banking and a founder of the Dorothy Rodbell Cohen Foundation for Sarcoma Research, will receive the Bishop John R. McGann Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to a distinguished individual dedicated to volunteering time and effort in support of the Friends of Mercy. •Marc DiSciullo, MD of Muttontown, the outgoing president of the Mercy Medical Staff, will receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Service. The award is presented by the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council to an individual contributing to the development of Long

Island’s community hospitals in the spirit of the renowned former president and Long Island resident’s lifelong devotion to public service. •Nancy Carr of Merrick, long-time executive assistant to Mercy’s Chief Administrative Officers and Board of Trustees liaison, will receive the Sister Mary Nadine Casey, CIJ Award that honors a member of the Mercy family who best personifies the values of Mercy Medical Center and the Congregation of the Infant Jesus whose members founded the hospital. In an effort to assist residents with post-storm cleanup efforts, the Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has set up a location for residents to bring their household hazardous waste materials, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Now through Friday, November 30th, residents can visit the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, to safely dispose of unwanted hazardous pollutants. “The significant cleanup process following Hurricane Sandy has the potential to be hazardous to our environment,” Supervisor Venditto said. “With many residents cleaning up or, in some cases, cleaning out their homes, there may be a large amount of household hazardous waste that many residents may not be aware how to dispose of properly and safely.” Items which can be brought to the drop-off site include those permitted at a typical Town S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Day, such as solvents, drain and oven cleaners, spot removers, small aerosol cans, rechargeable and button batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, and outdoor gas grill propane tanks. For additional information, contact the Town Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5943, or visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. You had your hearing tested over Thanksgiving and didn’t even know it! The holiday season can be the WORST time of year for a person with hearing loss. Family gatherings, crowded (and noisy) stores — the hustle and bustle of the holidays make it far more difficult to hear and understand clearly. Difficulty in a crowded or noisy environment is one of the classic symptoms of nerve deafness, the most common hearing disorder. Other symptoms are: • Asking others to repeat themselves • A belief that others mumble • • Playing the TV or radio too loud • 1 in 3 Americans (age 60+) live with a significant hearing loss. For the vast majority, there are only two choices: 1. Try to cope with it the best you can, knowing there are many times when normal communication with others will be impossible. For many, this means avoiding family events, church functions, practically every situation where background noise is present. 2. Solve the problem! The technology we have today allows us to provide dramatic improvement for all but the most profound hearing loss. Gone are the days of imprecise amplification — with today’s computerized instruments our patients enjoy natural sound in a device that is virtually invisible to others. This is the time of year that we ALL recognize how fast time flies. It’s also This is the time of year that we ALL recognize how fast time flies. The Stony Brook University Alumni Association honored five Stony Brook University graduates and two philanthropists at the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony and reception held at Flowerfield in St. James on November 13. The event was emceed by Craig Allen (BS ’79), WCBS 880 radio meteorologist and a Stony Brook University Distinguished Alumnus. Each year since 1983, the Stony Brook University Alumni Association recognizes prominent SBU graduates for their career and community achievements, e x t r a o r d i n a r y commitment to Stony Brook and for reflecting “the highest values embraced and promoted by the University and the Stony Brook Alumni Association.” The 2012 Distinguished Alumni honorees are: Vito

A. Cannavo (BA ’75); David Gelernter (MS ’80, PhD ’83); Suzanne Johnson (PhD ’74); Joseph L. Tromba (BS ’77); and Andrez S. Carberry (BA ’00, MA ’02). The Alumni Association also honored Robert and Lisa Lourie with the inaugural “Distinguished Service Award” for their philanthropy to the University. Robert Lourie, PhD, is head of Futures Research at Renaissance Technologies and Lisa is owner and president of Spy Coast Farm. The Louries’ generous $2.5 million gift to Stony Brook’s Center for Pediatric MS, now the Lourie Center for Pediatric MS, was matched by The Simons Challenge Grant bringing the total investment in Stony Brook Medicine to $5 million. “This year’s honorees are remarkable because they have risen to

prominence in fields that are as diverse as Stony Brook’s programs - they are leaders in pediatric psychology, computer science, physics, medicine, law, healthcare and finance,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Together all of our recipients are a source of inspiration to our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community.” Dr. Sherry Sussman ’91, ’95, president of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, noted that each individual honoree has made e x t r a o r d i n a r y contributions to their respective fields. “Each recipient deserves special recognition for how well they used their time at the University as a foundation for discovering, reshaping, and enriching the world around them,” said Dr. Sussman.

Seeking Stories Mercy Medical Center will be celebrating its centennial in 2013, and to mark that occasion the hospital will be producing a commemorative journal and is seeking stories from the community to include in that publication. Mercy is seeking stories from current and former physicians, employees, volunteers, and patients – and their friends and

families – chronicling their experiences at the hospital and their feelings about the role it has played in their lives and in the community. The hospital is requesting 200-500 word narratives, along with photos or keepsakes that can be photographed and returned to the owners, for inclusion in the journal.

Submissions can be made through December 31st by e-mail to mel.granick@chsli.org, by fax to 516.705.2624, or by postal mail to: Stories For 100 Years, Public Relations Department, Mercy Medical Center, 1000 N. Village Avenue, P.O. Box 9024, Rockville Centre, NY 11571-9024.

Town Calendar Submissions

The 2013 Town Calendar will soon be mailed to all Oyster Bay Town residents, featuring photos submitted by Town residents. If you enjoy photography and would like to see your photos published in future Town publications, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Beth Faughnan invites you to submit photos at any time for consideration. “The annual Town Calendar and Summer Guide are just two examples of Town literature featuring

photos submitted by Town residents,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “We look for photos of all seasons, so I invite everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery reflective of the spirit and beauty of the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications. And don’t think you have to wait until warmer weather to start snapping. Winter presents photo

opportunities that are unique and totally different from the rest of the seasons. Photographers who are willing to brave the cold can find some inspiring subject matter, especially after a snowfall.” The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed

the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the upcoming winter, spring, summer and early

fall will provide great opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”

The Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center invites the community to join in the Annual Christmas Tree of Lights Celebration on Tuesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. The ceremony provides the opportunity to recall the need to grow stronger together in our search for peace, with the Tree of Lights representing a HELP FOR VICTIMS - The Plainedge High School Key Club and National Honor beacon of hope and unity Society would like to thank those who donated food and clothing items to those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Over 250 bags of clothing and food were collected and donated to Rock And Wrap It Up. The deliveries will be for those in the Rockaway affected by Hurricane Sandy.

in our fragmented world. The blessing and lighting of the Christmas tree will take place in front of the hospital, followed by refreshments served in the Main Lobby. Mercy’s Christmas tree lighting is an annual fundraiser that this year will support the Sister Mary Grace Education Fund that provides scholarships for students in financial
