East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team Celebrates Success
The East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team was recently celebrated for their remarkable season at the May Town Board Meeting by Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board.
In 2022, the Chiefs Hockey Team made club history by clinching Gold at the prestigious CAN/AM Championship in Lake Placid. Last year, they continued to make waves by securing a spot in the 2023 Chipotle-USA Hockey High School National Championships.
This year, the team’s winning streak reached new heights with several historic victories. They claimed their first-ever New York State Amateur Hockey Association (NYSAHA) State Championship, a monumental achievement for the program. Their success carried over to the USA Hockey National Championship in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where they finished with an impressive record, earning them the #2 rank in the Nation for Division II.
“Through hard work, resilience, and exceptional talent, the East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team’s achievements this season are nothing short of extraordinary, bringing immense pride to our community.
On behalf of myself and the Town Board, congratulations to all the players, coaches, and staff for their outstanding performance,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

For The Aging Announce Islip Spring Senior Advocate Schedule
Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Islip residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”
In the coming months, Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Islip:
• Bishop McGann Housing, 200 Bishop McGann Drive, Central Islip: Monday, June 24, 10 am – 12 pm
• Brentwood Senior Nutrition, 16 Second Avenue, Brentwood: Monday, June 24, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
• East Islip Library, 381 E. Main Street, East Islip: Monday, June 10, 10 am –12 pm
• St. Anne’s Gardens, 80100 2nd Avenue, Brentwood: Friday, June 7, 8:30 – 11 am
• West Islip Senior Center, 90 Higbie Lane, West Islip: Thursday, June 13, 10 am – 12 pm Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP – formerly known as food stamps), Medicare Savings Program and Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP) applications. They also can provide information on Medicare, answer questions and make recommendations and referrals. For more information about available services or directions to any of these locations, please call the Suffolk County Office for the Aging at (631) 853-8200.
“For more than three decades, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has been providing full and trouble-free access to critical services,” Donnelly said. “I am glad to see their great professional community outreach program continue and hope that every senior resident will make full use of it.”

Islip’s First Choose To Include Day Brings Awareness To Disabilities
Islip High School hosted the school’s first Choose to Include day on April 18, held in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month and the Special Olympics. Choose to Include is a Special Olympics movement that fosters awareness of differences and celebrates inclusivity through sports and beyond;
Islip High School now has both Unified bowling and Unified basketball teams.
Islip’s Choose to Include fair, held in the student lounge and organized by teacher Melissa Horn and her functional academics students, brought awareness to a multitude of disabilities. Students and staff
participated in challenges and simulations of these disabilities while attempting to complete everyday tasks.
The event also included a fundraiser to support a scholarship for a special needs student in honor of one of Horn’s students who passed away this school year.

A Cold Beverage Ideal For Summer
Summer is a season synonymous with relaxation. Sitting poolside or relaxing on a patio with a cold beverage is a great way to escape the daily grind and make the most of a warm evening, and the following recipe for “Summer Cantaloupe” from Andrew Schloss’ “Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits” (Storey Publishing) is tailor-made for summer nights.
Summer Cantaloupe
Makes about 1 quart
1 fifth (31/4 cups) 80-100 proof vodka
4 cups cantaloupe chunks
1 cup Simple Syrup (see below)
Finely grated zest of 2 lemons
Directions:
1. Muddle the vodka, cantaloupe and lemon zest with a wooden spoon in a half-gallon jar. Stir to moisten everything.
2. Seal the jar and put it in a cool, dark cabinet until the liquid smells and tastes strongly of melon, four to seven days.
3. Strain the mixture with a mesh strainer into a clean quart jar. Do not push on the solids to extract more liquid.
4. Stir in the Simple Syrup.
5. Seal and store in a cool, dark cabinet. Use within one year.
Simple Syrup
Makes 3 cups
2 1/4 cups water
21/4 cups granulated cane sugar
Directions:
Mix the water and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar is all moistened. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir to make sure the sugar is completely dissolved, then remove from the heat and let cool. Refrigerate for up to three months.

East Islip High School Girls Golfers Finish Outstanding Season
EAST ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLFERS FINISH OUTSTANDING SEASON - East Islip High School’s girls varsity golf team had an outstanding season, finishing with an impressive record of 8-4. Photo courtesy of East Islip School District
East Islip High School’s girls varsity golf team had an outstanding season, finishing with an impressive record of 8-4. The athletes demonstrated remarkable skill and determination throughout the season, showcasing the true spirit of competition and teamwork.
Three members of the team – Sara Pepp and senior team captains Sophie Jensen and Grace Zanni – represented East Islip in the County Championship Tournament, held on May 20 at Middle Island Country Club. Pepp’s exceptional performance earned her a spot in the second day of the tournament, where she competed for a top 20 finish in the county.
“Sarah’s dedication and talent were evident as she played against some of the best golfers in the county,” coach Bill Lackner said. “Grace and Sophie also displayed excellent leadership and skill, guiding the team through a challenging and rewarding season. Their commitment to the sport and to their teammates was instrumental in achieving such a successful record. All of our girls played their hearts out and concluded the season on a high note. We are incredibly proud of all the team members who competed and showcased their talent and sportsmanship. Their hard work, perseverance and camaraderie were key factors in making this season one to remember. Great job, girls! You have made East Islip proud. We look forward to seeing what you will accomplish in the future. Keep up the fantastic work and continue to strive for excellence both on and off the course.”
PSEG Long Island Employees Make Donation To Help Protect Power Lines, Wildlife And The Environment From Balloon Hazards
PSEG Long Island employees recently donated $1,000 to Merrick-based Balloon Mission, Inc. a notfor-profit organization that collects discarded balloons in an effort to protect wildlife and the environment.
Balloon safety is important to PSEG Long Island because metallic balloons can be hazardous to overhead electric lines – potentially causing fires and power outages, and also because of the negative effects released balloons can have on the ecosystem.
The donation was made through three of the company’s employee business resource groups (EBRG): GREEN, which is comprised of employeeadvocates of clean energy alternatives, LI Environmental Guardians, which supports local efforts to help preserve the earth, and the Able EBRG, which champions community
organizations that help people with disabilities.
The Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), which serves families of children and adults with disabilities, has been involved with Balloon Mission’s work.
Adults receiving services from ACDS help Balloon Mission by collecting deflated balloons from various balloon drop box locations. The group then practices life skills by sorting and counting the balloons before they are safely and properly discarded.
Balloon Mission will use the PSEG Long Island donation to educate the public through community outreach and balloon collection programs, and by erecting informational signage at area parks and beaches about the dangers of balloon releases.
"We're so grateful for our partnership with PSEG
Long Island,” said Cynthia Seibold, founder and executive director of Balloon Mission, Inc. “This donation will help fund our recycling and education programs that raise awareness about the unintended harm balloons have when they're accidentally or purposely let go in the sky. We're pioneering a balloon collection program so people can responsibly enjoy balloons. Once the fun is done, they pop-n-drop balloons in our bins knowing they're keeping animals and the environment safe, while reducing the risk of fires and power outages."
“We are supporting this wonderful organization that is raising awareness about the potential dangers balloons can have on our environment,” said Anna Keselman, co-president of the PSEG Long Island GREEN EBRG. “We are inspired by Cynthia’s

enthusiasm and her organization’s mission to protect turtles, sea life and our lands.”
PSEG Long Island reminds the public that balloons released into the air can become entangled in
overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems.
Metallic balloons conduct electricity and resting on an electric line or other electrical equipment could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.
Balloons caught on electrical equipment should be reported to PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue.

Shrimp Dish Tailor-Made
For Warm Evenings
Lighter fare is more popular when the weather warms up, as many people don’t want to feel weighed down by their diet. Fish is a popular summertime meal for many reasons, not the least of which is that fish tends to be light but still flavorful. In addition, many meals featuring fish can be whipped up rather quickly. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Grilled Garlic Shrimp With a Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce” from Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey Publishing). Fresh and simple, this meal can be enjoyed as a change of pace at summer barbecues or simply as a light weeknight meal with the family.
Grilled Garlic Shrimp With A Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce
Serves 6w
For the marinated shrimp
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
36 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
12 6-inch wooden skewers
For the tomato sauce
3 pounds assorted large heirloom tomatoes
1 small sweet onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon honey, preferably sourwood honey
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips (chiffonade is the formal name for this cut), plus more for garnish
Sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
1. To marinate the shrimp, combine the olive oil, red wine vinegar and garlic in a large bowl. Stir to combine. Add the shrimp and allow to sit, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
2. Prepare a medium fire in a charcoal or gas grill. Soak the skewers in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent them from burning.
3. To make the tomato sauce, bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Place one or two tomatoes at a time into the boiling water. Watch them and, as you see the skin split, remove with a slotted spoon and place in a bowl of cool water. At this point, it will be very easy to slip off the skins.
4. Cut the peeled tomatoes into a small dice. Put the cut tomatoes into a large bowl. Add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey. Stir gently to combine.
5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 per skewer. Grill the skewered shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until they are pink. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and a couple grinds of fresh pepper.
6. Just before serving, add the basil leaves to the tomato sauce. Taste and add more salt if necessary.
7. Ladle the tomato sauce onto a serving platter and arrange the skewers on top of the sauce. Garnish with more basil leaves and enjoy!

Legislator Flotteron Recognizes Islip Fire Department’s Outgoing Chief of Department
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Islip Fire Department’s Outgoing Chief of Department Alden Schroeder at their Installation Dinner. He joined the department in April of 2005 and then joined Engine Company #2 a year later after his year of probation. Showing the skills of a future leader, it was clear Alden was going to make a run to be an officer of the company.
Schroeder was elected and served as 2nd Lieutenant of Engine Co. 2 in 2010 & 2011. He was
then elected and served as 1st Lieutenant of Engine Co. 2 in 2012 & 2013 before being elected and serving as Captain of the company in 2014 & 2015. After his term as a company officer, it was very clear that Alden would be the perfect candidate to run for Chief.
Moving up the Ranks of the Department, Schroeder was nominated and elected 2nd Asst. Chief, where he served in 2018 & 2019. Chief Schroeder was then elected and served as 1st Asst. Chief in 2020 & 2021, which was a difficult term dealing with the effects
of the pandemic. His leadership skills during this time proved to the department that even at such a young age, Alden was ready to lead and was nominated for Chief of the Department serving in 2022 and 2023.
Ex-Chief Schroder continues to be one of the most active members of the Department by responding to alarms, helping the membership and training newer members. Alden Schroder possesses all of the qualities that make one of the best firemen around.
Music Courses
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.
The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least
one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) Unveils New Community Mural
The Long Island Children's Museum (LICM) unveiled a brandnew 1,100-sq-ft public art piece that will serve as the fresh new "face" of the Museum for current and future generations of Long Islanders. Created by artist Viktoriya Basina along with Long Island children during a series of "paint parties" at the Museum over the course of three months, the collaborative process included community conversations with visitors to capture images and themes that reflect the Museum, its audience and Long Island. Feedback was shared during design review workshops before finally the process of painting the panels that make up the mural took place. The installation itself took five days.
Museum president Erika S. Floreska said, "We asked people to share their thoughts on what community means to them
and that's what we wanted the mural to convey. We're incredibly happy with the results of this collaborative community effort."
The unveiling event was attended by local officials including Congressman Anthony D'Esposito (4th CD) along with NYS Assemblyman Edward P. Ra; Nassau County Legislator Thomas McKevitt, Town of North
Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and Michael Reinhart, Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.
The public art piece is part of LICM's Community Voices Take Shape grant supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from Robert & Toni Bader Charitable Foundation.

East Islip Special Olympics Athletes Bring Home 20 Medals
East Islip’s Special Olympics team – featuring 11 dedicated athletes from East Islip High School, East Islip Middle School, Cleary School for the Deaf and alumni – successfully competed in the Special Olympics New York Spring Games North, hosted by Plainedge High School.
The festivities began a day earlier with the annual kickoff breakfast at the high school, attended by the athletes, coaches, family members, SEPTO and East Islip administration. High school volunteers proved invaluable in setting up and helping throughout
the breakfast.
Family and fans in the stands cheered on East Islip’s athletes at the Games as they competed in a variety of track events including the 25-meter assisted walk, 50-meter motorized wheelchair slalom, 50-meter run, 100-meter walk, 200-meter run and 400-meter run, and field events such as tennis and softball throw, Turbojav throw and shot put. East Islip brought home 10 gold medals, eight silver medals, two bronze medals and two fourth-place ribbons.
“We lucked out with a
beautiful day for the event,” said Diane Wahrenburg, who coaches East Islip with Julie Susskind. “Our team showed outstanding sportsmanship and perseverance, and put forth an amazing effort throughout the training season and during the competition. Their smiles in the pictures are worth a thousand words. We, and all of our additional coaches, volunteers, family members and administrators, are extremely proud of all of these athletes. Can’t wait until next year!”

The Differences Between Weather Warnings And Watches
Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy.
When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid
serious consequences.
The NWS uses a four-tier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.
Outlook
This is the least serious weather alert. It usually means that hazardous weather may approach in the next three to seven days. The public should monitor the situation and stay tuned for further updates.
Advisory
With an advisory, weather conditions are not overly serious but could prove inconvenient. Individuals should be cautious and prudent when preparing supplies or traveling.
Watch
During a weather watch, there is an increased risk of a hazardous weather occurrence, though the timing or location is still uncertain. This is when
it is essential to practice an evacuation or preparedness plan and stock up on any lastminute supplies.
Warning
The most serious of the weather impact notifications, a warning constitutes an imminent or likely event. The weather may cause a threat to property or life. Immediate action to stay safe is necessary.
While these alerts are based on the severity of impending
weather, it is important to note that the NWS will not necessarily follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Memorable Ways To Celebrate Dad This Father’s Day
Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. The days when dads would receive a colorful necktie for Father’s Day are largely (and, for fathers,
thankfully) a relic of the past. Modern Father’s Day celebrations tend to involve more careful planning, and the following are some ways to make this year’s day for dads one to remember.
• Take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last decade-plus, as various firms have made it easier than ever for individuals
to trace their family histories. If Dad counts himself among the millions across the globe interested in their family histories, moms and kids can work together to create a virtual tour through that history. Present the history as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting things you learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up.
• Take to the great outdoors. Father’s Day is celebrated in midJune, making the day a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors (weather permitting). Plan a day
around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an avid fisherman, book a family outing on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and not navigating. If Dad loves being in natural settings, camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the crisp morning air. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, take him out to the ballgame so he can soak up some Father’s Day sun.
• Book a private chef. If Dad has a fascination with food, perhaps nothing can make Father’s Day more memorable than a delicious meal served by a private chef. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by
someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning. Identify Dad’s favorite dish and then look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine.
• Appeal to Dad’s inner adventurer. Some Dads may just want to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, book a fun and adventurous activity the whole family can enjoy together. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend can connect Dad with his inner adventurer. There’s no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad won’t soon forget.

Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
