United Way Of Long Island’s Vetsbuild Program Receives $40,000 Grant From PSEG Foundation

The United Way of Long Island has received a $40,000 grant toward VetsBuild, a program which provides career training and employment opportunities for Long Island veterans and their families, from the PSEG Foundation. The grant will make possible a hands-on education in green construction for 20 veterans as they work to transform the United Way of Long Island

headquarters in Deer Park, New York, into a Net Zero building that produces as much energy as it uses.

VetsBuild is part of United Way of Long Island’s Workforce Development Training Academy providing free hands-on training focused on creating a foundation and pathways to secure careers in the renewable energy industry for Long Islanders. Veterans are able to transition back to a civilian routine and gain clear, long-term career path development that is complemented by online financial empowerment workshops. Graduates become proficient in the installation of clean heating and cooling technologies, high-efficiency HVAC, heat pumps, solar panels, and EV Charging.

“PSEG Long Island is proud to support the United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild program because giving back to the

communities where we live and work is part of PSEG Long Island’s mission,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO of PSEG Long Island who is a United Way of Long Island board member. “The veterans in the program are learning to design, build, and implement renewable energy on our island. The PSEG Foundation’s funding of this program is a win for all of us.”

“Our thanks to PSEG for providing this important grant,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “The VetsBuild program will provide workforce development training to connect veterans with the confidence and skills needed to obtain employment and return to everyday life.”

VetsBuild participants will also receive training at United Way’s E3 SmartBuild Training Center, a state-

of-the-art facility equipped with the latest technology and equipment. Graduates will work toward earning industry-recognized certifications in green building, such as BPI (Building Performance Institute) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).

“The PSEG Foundation has a long history of supporting veterans and their families,

Make Holiday Crafting A Family Affair

Families gather frequently during the holiday season as everyone enjoys the feasts and festivities that are synonymous with this time of year. Families often bake and decorate together, as these activities are inclusive of people of all ages.

This time of year also is one for dabbling in creative pursuits. Now is a prime opportunity to bond with children over a table full of paint, glue, beads, and other crafty supplies. The crafts made during the holidays often become cherished mementos that will be regarded fondly for years to come. Here are some ideas to inspire holiday creativity.

Snowman family

Handprint crafts are popular among children. Adults and children can dip their hands into washable white paint and make a handprint stamp on a small canvas, wooden palette or even a terracotta flowerpot. Decorate the white fingerprints with black dots to look like the faces of the snowmen and paint on top hats and scarves. In the years to come, artists can marvel at

how small their hand prints once were.

Wine cork reindeer

Repurpose wine corks by crafting adorable little reindeer. Two corks make up the head and the body, and four vertically will comprise the feet. Stick on googly eyes, and add a small red or black bead for the nose. Pipe cleaners can be bent to form the reindeer’s antlers.

Family garlands

This craft also makes use of handprints. Ask all family members to trace their handprints on different colors of construction paper or card stock. Cut out all of the paper hands, punch holes in the tops and then string a ribbon through. Decorate the Christmas tree or a mantle with this garland.

Miniature Christmas trees

Paint the tips of gathered pine cones with green paint and allow to dry. Add white glitter or paint as “snow.”

Glue the pine cones to wine corks that will serve as the tree trunks, and attach a small wooden star to the top of the trees for the finishing

touch.

Decoupage ornaments

Purchase wooden or plastic ball ornaments.

Cover with small scraps of cut fabric or paper dipped in craft glue or Mod Podge®, and attach to the ornament in an overlapping fashion. Remember to add a string from which the ornament can be hung on the tree. Allow to dry completely before use.

Paper chain

Advent calendar

Cut strips of paper to make a link for every day of Advent.

Advent begins on Sunday, December 1, 2024, and lasts

until Christmas. The top link can be any design artists prefer, but those who need a little inspiration can consider a religious symbol, the face of a reindeer, a snowman, or a Christmas tree. Hang the chain and then children can take turns ripping off a link from the bottom each day as they count down to the holiday.

Popsicle stick snowflakes

Paint four popsicle sticks per snowflake in desired colors. Decorate with glue, pompoms, beads, or other trinkets. Add small looped strings to hang the ornaments.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly, himself a 33-year Decorated Member of the Deer Park Fire Department (DPFD) and a retired FDNY Lieutenant, recently honored Brian Thomas of Deer Park as his 2024 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. Joined by Mr. Thomas’ family, DPFD Chief Macaluso and members of the department, Legislator Donnelly presented him with a proclamation at the DPFD headquarters.

“Firefighter Brian Thomas exemplifies dedication and service to our community and is truly deserving of recognition” said Legislator Donnelly.

“Through his many roles in the Deer Park Fire Department, especially as Department Photographer, he has not only documented the department’s invaluable work but also strengthened its connection with the community. His contributions have ensured that the legacy of fire and emergency service in Deer Park is preserved for generations to come.”

Mr. Thomas has been a dedicated member of the DPFD since joining in 1978. Over the years he has taken on various roles, including President of Company 2 in 1994 and more recently, Department Photographer. His work has significantly enhanced the department’s social media presence, serving as a vital communication tool for events like the holiday parade and open house, as well as during emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Through his dedication, Mr. Thomas has also created a comprehensive visual archive, preserving decades of the department’s history which is an important service to the Deer Park community.
