Supervisor Ferretti Teams Up With Santa Claus And The United States Marines To Deliver Toys For Tots

Santa Claus is coming to Hempstead Town, and he’s enlisted the help of Supervisor John Ferretti, the Hempstead Town Board, and the United States Marines Toys for Tots organization to ensure that every child receives a gift this holiday season. The festive team will collaborate over the next several weeks to hold a Holiday Collection Drive, with donation locations throughout America’s largest township. Residents are invited to take part in the collection drive by donating new, unwrapped toys for families in need.

The Town of Hempstead and the United States Marines Toys for Tots organization will also host a Holiday Collection CruiseThru event on Saturday, December 13th from 10 AM to 2 PM at Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow (1700 Prospect Avenue, East Meadow).

Residents can drop off new, unwrapped toys directly to Santa Claus via a drive-thru program, a more convenient and viable option for many parents and guardians with young children.

“During this season of giving, Hempstead Town and the United States Marines Toys for Tots organization want to ensure that every young girl and boy receive gifts and get to experience the true magic and wonder of the holidays,” said Supervisor Ferretti. “We ask residents to join us in helping local families in need. Whether you utilize one of our many drop-off locations or participate in the Holiday Collection Cruise-Thru on December 13th, your gifts will make a difference for many local children.”

In addition to the CruiseThru toy drop-off event, toys (new, unwrapped) can be placed in collection bins

stationed at five locations through December 17th, seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Hempstead Town Hall and Hempstead Town Tax Office are open Monday-Friday only):

Hempstead Town Tax Office, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead (MondayFriday only)

Veterans Memorial Park, 1700 Prospect Avenue, East Meadow

Fourth graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School explored Long Island’s past during an in-school field trip on Nov. 10. Educators from Journeys

Seaford Students Journey To Long Island’s Past

Into American Indian Territory shared stories and showcased artifacts during a multi-faceted program.

As part of the social studies curriculum, students

have been learning about Native Americans of Long Island and New York State, including the Algonquin and Iroquois. The Journeys program featured several

hand-on activities that immersed students in the culture. In a museum in the gymnasium, they saw a variety of artifacts such as clothing and footwear, dolls, toys and utensils.

Students then got to rotate among the fur touch table, drilling station and corn pounder.

The stories and games room began with traditional tales. Students then played a ring and pin game, followed by a corn seed and dice game. They also got to make their own clay pots and attended a workshop to learn about Native American symbols.

Seaford Harbor Elementary School fourth graders, from left, Christian Libretto, Colton Takseraas, Jeannie Taylor and Allie Lago, along with instructor Ryan Aparo, got to try on Native American clothing during the Journeys Into American Indian Territory. Town & Local Baymen Break Ground On New Memorial Monument

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca joined with members of the Baymens Heritage Association and representatives of the Nassau County Police Department to host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new monument at Theodore Roosevelt Park. The Baymen’s Memorial Monument will be installed in the coming months overlooking Oyster Bay Harbor.

“This new monument, featuring a statue of a bayman pulling his catch onto his boat, will forever remember those who make their living from the sea. It will memorialize those who for hundreds of years labored and at times lost their lives to bring us the treasured resources of the water,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This location provides the perfect setting for this memorial – it will be a place of reflection, where friends, family, and visitors can view our beautiful harbor and take a few minutes to think about the sacrifices made by our baymen.”

The Supervisor unveiled the renderings of the monument alongside John Kennedy, the Vice President of the Baymen’s Heritage Association, whose son Michael lost his life as a bayman on the waters of the Long Island Sound.

Nassau County Police Commissioner

Patrick Ryder and members of the Nassau County Police Department, including the Police Mounted Unit, joined them.

“This monument has been a longtime dream, which will now become a reality,” said John Kennedy. “I thank the Town of Oyster Bay, the Baymen’s Heritage Association, and everyone who donated to make this possible.”

Advance Care Plans

The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population.

With age comes the added burden of dealing with

illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family.

Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.

Association raised funds for the project, which included a large donation from local musician Billy Joel. The memorial will honor the Town’s Baymen and those who have lost their lives to the demanding profession, including beloved Bayman Mike Kennedy, who perished in the Long Island Sound on May 17, 2020. For more information on the project, visit www. baymensheritage.org.
