On Monday, August 12, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, and Town of Babylon Councilman
Terence McSweeney hosted a special recognition ceremony to honor the courageous first responders who responded to the Hawaii Nail Salon tragedy in Deer Park. The Town also
recognized and honored those lost and injured in the tragedy.
McSweeney stood alongside Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor & Councilman Tony Martinez, Legislator Tom Donnelly & NYS Senator Monica Martinez to express gratitude to all who responded to the tragedy at the Hawaiian Nail
Salon and to recognize the collaborative efforts that were mobilized on that dreadful day.
“We extend our appreciation to those who arrived at the scene and to the other departments that left their homes to provide support at various firehouses for extended periods, ensuring that emergency calls were
addressed while personnel managed the unfolding crisis.”
Legislator Donnelly added, “Successfully handling such emergencies requires extensive planning and training, with communication serving as a crucial element in navigating catastrophic situations. Those in leadership roles,
along with those following their guidance, executed a seamless rescue and recovery operation.” This night was dedicated not to any single individual who contributed that day, but rather to the units that collaborated effectively, including the Suffolk County Police Dept. and various fire and rescue departments. This marks only the second
occasion on which the Town of Babylon has awarded unit citations for the exceptional efforts made to save lives and provide solace to those mourning a loss.
Supervisor Schaffer said “We are grateful to Chief Robert Macaluso and the Deer Park Fire Department for facilitating this gathering this evening to honor our local heroes.
The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near
future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly
large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other
health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking yearround heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective.
The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including
radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.
