Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg and Marcus Duffin, deputy commissioner of human services and special projects for the Town of Babylon, enjoyed spending time with the students. Mr. Duffin read, “I Promise” by LeBron James, a book filled with promises kids should recite to help them be good citizens, believe in themselves and become the
best they can be.
Mr. Richberg read,
“Mariama: Different But the Same,” by Jeronimo Cornelles and Nivola Uyaa, a children’s book that explores themes of diversity, inclusion and understanding. It tells the story of Mariama, a young girl who learns that while people may come from different backgrounds and cultures, they are more alike than they seem.
The book emphasizes the importance of empathy, kindness and acceptance.
The students were excited and thanked Mr. Duffin and Mr. Richberg for their time.
From March 3-7, students and teachers at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville participated in several activities to celebrate National Read Across America Week.
The purpose of National Read Across America Week is to motivate students to read, celebrating reading and literacy, and building a sense of community around books.
The weeklong activities included a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Wacky Wednesday, Crazy Socks Day, and Rainbow Colors Day. Additionally, Northeast kicked off their celebration of Women’s History Month.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2025 Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon.
This event, happening on Saturday, April 12, from 12pm to 2pm, features an egg hunt for children up to nine years old, photos with the Spring Bunny, a princess meet and greet, pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s games, and family entertainment.
Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. A rain date for the event is scheduled for Sunday, April 13, 12pm to 2pm. An $8 parking fee will be in effect for the event date and rain date.

Certainfoods tend to hit the spot a little more convincingly during particular times of year. For instance, it’s hard to resist a hearty comfort food when the weather outside is cold and the winter winds are howling. Come springtime, lighter fare regains its place in the spotlight. As spring blooms return, foodies looking for something that won’t bust their belts can try this recipe for “Beetroot Soup with Mixed Seeds” courtesy of Lines+Angles.
Makes 4 servings
For the soup:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion
1 finely chopped garlic clove
3 chopped celeries
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/2 teaspoon dried dill
5 cups vegetable stock, plus extra as needed
1 1/4 lb. pickled beets, cubed, juice reserved
Directions:
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
Salt
Freshly ground black peppercorns
To serve:
4 tablespoons plain yogurt
2 tablespoons chopped pistachio nuts, shelled
2 tablespoons black chia seeds
2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons golden linseeds or linseeds
1 handful mint leaves
1. For the soup: Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan set over medium heat until hot.
2. Add the onion, garlic, celery, and a generous pinch of salt, cooking for 6 to 7 minutes until softened.
3. Stir in the dried herbs and vegetable stock. Bring to a simmer before stirring in the beets.
4. Simmer gently for 20 to 25 minutes until the beetroot is very tender to the tip of a knife.
5. Purée with an immersion blender, adding in some of the reserved beetroot juice to thin out the consistency to your liking; you can also thin it out with more stock or some water.
6. Return the soup to a simmer and stir in the yogurt and some salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm over a very low heat, making sure the soup does not boil.
7. To serve: When ready to serve, ladle into warm bowls and top with some yogurt.
8. Garnish with a scattering of chopped pistachios, mixed seeds and some mint leaves before serving.

The statistics are in… recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. And a standout economic success story in recycling is HELPSY!
The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural
resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue.
A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper, plastics, rubber, electronics, organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials. Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons
of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons.
