Hybrid Event For Individuals, Teams Across The Country Benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Registration is open for the St. Jude Walk/Run Long Island presented by Tweezerman during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at 8:30AM EST on Saturday, September 21st at Marcum Mellville Offices and Park.

The St. Jude Walk/Run provides supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® a chance to take action and walk or run in person and virtually to raise funds and awareness for St. Jude. Thanks to generous supporters, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, so they can focus on helping their child live. This year’s St. Jude Walk/Run series is nationally presented by Window World, Marcum Foundation and Kia. For those attending the St. Jude Walk/Run in person, there will be food trucks, family entertainment and a St. Jude patient family speaker who will share why

the community’s support means so much to families like theirs. St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Fundraising events like the St. Jude Walk/Run unite individuals across the country to support the lifesaving mission of St. Jude: Finding cures. Saving children. ® Everywhere. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other lifethreatening diseases. Its purpose is clear: Finding cures. Saving children.® It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood

cancer was largely considered incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%, and it won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. St. Jude shares the breakthroughs it makes to help doctors and researchers at local hospitals and cancer centers around the world improve the quality of treatment and care for even more children. Because of generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, so they can focus on helping their child live. The Autumnal Equinox

Each September, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the autumnal equinox, which marks the official beginning of fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring is arriving at this time.

Each year there are two equinoxes, the vernal and the autumnal (March and September, respectively). Shortly after the autumnal equinox, days begin getting shorter and the nights get longer.

The word equinox is from the Latin “aequi,” meaning “equal,” and “nox” or “night.” That means that during each equinox the hours of day and night are nearly equal in length across the planet. During the equinox, the part of the Earth that is closest to the sun is the equator, explains History.com. That helps make night and day equal in length.

The fall equinox and the first day of autumn arrives on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 08:44 A.M. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox occurs at the same moment worldwide.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide Awareness And Prevention Here On Long Island

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a moment that serves as a powerful reminder that there are steps we all must take in looking out for loved ones, the people in our community, and those who have been impacted by this leading cause of death. Suicide continues to be an urgent public health matter with nearly 50,000 people dying by suicide and 1.6 million people attempting suicide in the United States in 2022 (the most current data available).

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a leader in this work, invites the public to join our growing movement and take action to save lives during this

awareness month and beyond. It’s time to take one big step together.

Since 2002, millions of people have attended the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALKS in communities across the country, raising awareness and funds that go toward education programs, advocacy efforts, and scientific research that reveals how we can save more lives.

By walking with others, we find comfort in knowing we are not alone, and that we are connected through great purpose to healing and support. So join us – as parents, neighbors, family members, classmates and colleagues – at our

two Out of the Darkness Community Walks on Long Island, as we all take a step in the right direction: towards HOPE.

Our Out of the Darkness East End Long Island Community Walk will be held on Sunday, September 22nd, beginning at 10:00 am in Smith Point County Park in Shirley. You can find out more information and register at //www.afsp. org/longislandwalkeast.

KODIAK

The Amityville Union Free School District welcomed all staff members back to the start of the 2024-25 school year with a Superintendent’s Conference Day held at Amityville Memorial High School on Aug. 28. The theme of the day, “Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers,” set

the tone for a year focused on collaboration, inclusivity and progress.

Superintendent Dr. Gina Talbert kicked off the day by acknowledging the challenges the district faced last school year. “I am here to ask you to join me in taking the first steps

toward a better year,” said Dr. Talbert. “We may not have the same rhythm as last year, but I believe that together, we can find a new harmony— one that is built on trust, resilience and a shared commitment to our students and to each other.”

From left, Assistant Superintendent for Finance & Operations Olivia Buatsi, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Mary Stephens, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Bridgette Waite.

President Lisa Johnson also echoed these sentiments in her address to the staff and warmly welcomed all in attendance.

Dr. Talbert then outlined a series of goals for the upcoming school year centered on core academic areas, school culture and

climate, parental and family engagement, and finance and budgeting. She also encouraged all staff members to identify their primary goals as educators, recognize any barriers in achieving these goals and reflect on what they can do to build a bridge from these roadblocks. The district, in collaboration with all staff, looks forward to a year of growth and success ahead and thanks all employees for their continued dedication.
