PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT “DON’T LOSE OUT ON YOUR REAL ESTATE TAX DEDUCTION” IMPoRTANT Changes To The STAR Tax Exemption Program! New legislation requires ALL homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department THIS year in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This is part of a new initiative to protect tax dollars from being lost to fraud. The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance will be mailing instructions to Long Island homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption between September 16 and October 4 on how to register, along with a STAR code that they will need to register. SENIOR CITIZENS: Senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement. Seniors must, however, continue to apply annually, or particpate in the Income Verification Program.

How To Register: DON’T DEL Homeowners can register for the STAR exemption online. A REGISTER Y They will need to: TODAY • Provide a STAR code (New York State is mailing codes to all Basic STAR recipients (Codes can also be retrieved online). • Provide the names and social security numbers for all owners of the property and spouses. • Confirm the property is the primary residence of one of its owners (married couples with multiple residences may only claim one STAR exemption). • Confirm that the combined income of the owners and their spouses who reside at the property does not exceed $500,000. • Confirm that no resident owner received a residency-based tax benefit from another state.
