On Monday, August 12, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, and Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney hosted a special recognition ceremony to honor the courageous first responders who responded to the Hawaii Nail Salon tragedy in Deer Park. The Town also

recognized and honored those lost and injured in the tragedy.

McSweeney stood alongside Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor & Councilman Tony Martinez, Legislator Tom Donnelly & NYS Senator Monica Martinez to express gratitude to all who responded to the tragedy at the Hawaiian Nail

Salon and to recognize the collaborative efforts that were mobilized on that dreadful day.

“We extend our appreciation to those who arrived at the scene and to the other departments that left their homes to provide support at various firehouses for extended periods, ensuring that emergency calls were

addressed while personnel managed the unfolding crisis.”

Legislator Donnelly added, “Successfully handling such emergencies requires extensive planning and training, with communication serving as a crucial element in navigating catastrophic situations. Those in leadership roles,

along with those following their guidance, executed a seamless rescue and recovery operation.” This night was dedicated not to any single individual who contributed that day, but rather to the units that collaborated effectively, including the Suffolk County Police Dept. and various fire and rescue departments. This marks only the second

occasion on which the Town of Babylon has awarded unit citations for the exceptional efforts made to save lives and provide solace to those mourning a loss.

Supervisor Schaffer said “We are grateful to Chief Robert Macaluso and the Deer Park Fire Department for facilitating this gathering this evening to honor our local heroes.

Spending time with their families benefits children in myriad ways. Such quality time can strengthen bonds between parents and children, and one study from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse found that frequent family dinners make children less likely to use tobacco, consume alcohol and use marijuana.

Volunteering is a great way for families to spend time together. Children of various ages can reap the rewards of volunteering, and those rewards may be even more significant when kids give back alongside their parents. Children's ages and maturity levels should always be considered when looking for a volunteering opportunity. The following are some family-friendly options parents can consider as they look to volunteer with their children.

• Food drive: Participating in a food drive is a great way for families to give

Family-Friendly Volunteering Opportunities

back together. Kids of all ages can pitch in on a food drive. Parents can take children to the grocery store and let them pick items to donate. Kids also can accompany their parents to pick up donated items and drop them off at the local food bank.

• Toy drive: Toy drives are popular come the holiday season, and children of all ages may enjoy picking items that they know will help to make the holiday season special for other youngsters. If toy drive organizers don't request specific items, ask kids which toys they would recommend or encourage kids to donate lightly used items they no longer use. Children are enthusiastic givers, and toy drives are a great opportunity to illustrate how good it feels to help those in need.

• Park/beach cleanups: Human

beings are stewards of the environment, so what better way to instill that lesson in children than to volunteer to clean up local parks and beaches? Kids will look forward to a day in the great outdoors, and they'll take pride in

knowing they did their part alongside their parents to make their favorite green spaces and beaches cleaner for their communities.

• Soup kitchens: Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, cited

a recent study that found 67 percent of food banks were in need of volunteers. Many volunteers, a significant percentage of which are seniors, stopped volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic out of fear

of catching the virus. Volunteering at food banks can teach children valuable lessons about the importance of giving back, and many food banks have altered their operations to make it safe for all volunteers to lend a helping hand.

Sleep Is Restorative And Essential For Children

Sleep is restorative and essential for ensuring our minds and bodys operate at peak capacity, but many kids are not getting enough sleep. According to WebMD, bedtimes have gradually become later as children must contend with social, family and school activities. This is especially true for older children. WebMD says that most 12-year-olds now go to bed around 9 p.m., getting an average of 9 hours of sleep, even though 12 hours is ideal for kids who are 12.

The statistics are in… recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. And a standout economic success story in recycling is HELPSY!

The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created

Recycling Is Good For The Economy

in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue.

A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper, plastics, rubber, electronics,

organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials.

Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons

of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons.

“HELPSY’s environmental mission is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous environmental burden of

the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of HELPSY.

Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with 113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations. Through a combination of clothing drives, home pick-ups, thrift store partners and clothing receptacles located

in 10 states, HELPSY diverts nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from landfills every year. Considering those numbers, recycling clothes makes sense both environmentally and financially. For additional information about HELPSY or to join in our environmental preservation efforts, contact info@helpsy. co.
