Billy Hofacker of Total Body Boot Camp, Long Island, recently announced that his Boot Camp in Farmingdale raised $263 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Inspired by the 2012 Olympics in London, we held our own version. Two events took place. One was a 21 Day Challenge in which clients had to attend sessions on 21 different days throughout the month,” explained Hofacker. “We know August is tough for people fitness wise with summer activities going on so we wanted to add an incentive. Participants who meet the challenge will receive special custom T-shirts as a prize.” He continued, “The second event was called TBBC Games and was a fitness challenge. The winner of the challenge was able to donate all profits to the

charity of their choice. Our winner chose St. Jude.” The Total Body Boot Camp has been making strides in the community by helping residents become more fit, holding free events for adults and kids, and donating to support childhood obesity prevention. “We have plans to impact the community even more in the months and years to come. We truly believe that doing god is the only we to do business,” Hofacker says. Next on the agenda for Total Body Boot Camp is their upcoming Biggest Winner Ultimate Thinner contest. This team weight loss challenge begins September 17th and is a great way to get in shape at a fraction of the cost of personal training while being eligible to win some great prizes. Total Body Boot Camp is

located at 127A East Carmans Road in Farmingdale. There is an investment required to register for the contest, but much of it goes toward the prizes and other overhead to run the contest. To sign up, call 631.225.7831 or register online at www.lifitnessbootcamp.co m. “This is just a fun way to help our local community to have an opportunity for a happy, healthy and productive life!”

Taking Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I like being busy. It makes BALLET AT TANNER - On the Weekend of August 11th, Lumiere Ballet presented two free performances of Coppelia to residents. The performances were organized by time go by faster, and gives the Town of Babylon Cultural Affairs, and looked great at the Tanner Park Bandshell. you a sense of productivity

otherwise lost on being complacent. And this summer has certainly been a busy one. The only problem is when you pause just long enough to look at the calendar and realize – it’s almost over. Labor Day is just around the corner and, while fall is technically over three weeks away, we all know that everyone’s mental clocks reset the second the last “official” barbeque of the season is over. Back to school, back from vacation… quick, close the pool and pack up the lawn chairs! Stick a fork in summer – it’s done. On the one hand, I would love to squeeze in just one

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie more afternoon at the beach (or two or three), and, after all, a good old-fashioned grilled hot dog knows no season. Is it really time to pack up the white accessories, along with all the skirts and pastel-colored linens? But what if it’s still warm out?? Face it, transitioning isn’t easy. But on the other hand, there’s something exciting about fall too. It has its own perks and pleasures – the cool, crisp air, the upcoming Fall Festivals and Homecoming celebrations… football, postseason baseball… winery tours, pumpkin picking, Halloween… It’s definitely not all bad. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go “back to school” shopping for some new clothes! Every season arrives with

eager anticipation. But then, about halfway through, we’re already waiting for the next round. We’re impatient like that. And then we complain that time has flown by too quickly for us to fully appreciate each and every day. Can’t have it both ways. Like it or not, a new season – and a new mentality – is just around the corner. But what we choose to do with it, and how quickly we choose to react, is up to us. My calendar says we still have three and a half weeks left of summer, even more if the weather holds out. But if you’d rather dig out the boots and scarves from the back of the closet and get on line from now for Halloween candy, well that’s up to you. Just don’t complain that time is flying by too quickly.

Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.” Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold the following February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property could result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver

Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit the Treasurer’s office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that all Oyster Bay property taxpayers whose taxes are in arrears do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Free Adoptions For September The Town of Oyster Bay’s Animal Shelter is brimming with happy, healthy animals that lack just one thing…a loving home, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. If you’ve been thinking about adding a canine or feline to your family, September would be a great time as the Town is holding its fourth annual Free Adoption Month in September. “I invite anyone interested in adopting a pet to visit the Town’s Animal Shelter and see the wide selection of puppies and kittens, as well as older dogs and cats, even some purebreds, available for adoption,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Trained shelter personnel will work with you to make sure the animal you select is appropriate for your family’s lifestyle.” The Councilwoman went on to say that during

September, the Town will waive the usual adoption fee of $65 for dogs and $59 for cats. Those adopting dogs will be required to pay a license fee of $10 for a spayed/neutered dog or $15 for an unspayed/unneutered dog. For seniors, the license fee is $5. Dogs will receive both a rabies and a 5-in-1 shot, while cats will receive a rabies and 4-in-1 shot at no charge. Both dogs and cats will receive free microchipping. “The Town of Oyster Bay is eager to help you make a wonderful, four-legged addition to your family and conversely, find loving homes for those animals who currently call the Town Animal Shelter home,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Our ‘Free Adoption Month” has proven to be a great success in encouraging people to visit our state-ofthe-art shelter and go home with a new best

friend.” For further information, contact the Animal Shelter at 516.677.5784. It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To see photos of some of the animals available for adoption, visit the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com.

My Hope Chest, a Florida-based non-profit, is proud to introduce the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon, the first ribbon to support uninsured and underinsured breast cancer survivors. This new ribbon speaks to the r e s t o r a t i o n , transformation and the completion from the cancer journey that many survivors seek through reconstructive surgery after mastectomy. For those who desire, breast reconstruction provides closure and a new wholeness allowing a woman to put the disease behind her at last. “The traditional ‘pink ribbon’ has branded breast cancer ‘awareness, education and research’ but overlooks a huge population of underserved survivors that live with scars and a constant reminder of the disease,” founder Alisa Savoretti said. “There are hundreds

of breast cancer groups in America focused on prevention and finding a cure, while the need for breast reconstruction has flown under the radar of the ‘pink ribbon.’” The colors in the breast reconstruction ribbon transition and transform, just like the survivors My Hope Chest helps to become whole again. The ribbon goes from pink the original breast cancer color, to white - known as the “light” or the power of healing. The white blends to yellow, the color of hope, sunshine and new beginnings. The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Ribbon symbolizes transformation and closure from the disease. My Hope Chest hopes this new symbol will help others recognize this need and shine the light on this epidemic for thousands who have sacrificed a piece of themselves to save their life.

Thirteen year-old Hampton/NYC resident, Grant Andreas had an idea to collect the leftover food from the summer months to feed the struggling families of Long Island. Thanks to help of Strong’s Marine and Hall Lane Movin & Storage, Move For Hunger is turning Grant’s idea into a reality wit the first annual Hamptons End of Summer Food Drive. Over 320,000 people on Long Island, including 118,000 children, live on incomes that put them at risk for hunger. The collections from th End of Summer Food Drive will directly benefit the food supply of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank; the organization that provides hunger relief for struggling families in Nassau and Suffol counties. Collection boxes will be set up all Labor Day

Founded in 2003 by Alisa Savoretti, My Hope Chest services pick up where other breast cancer organizations leave off providing “final step of breast cancer treatment” and helping women become whole again. Savoretti knows from first-hand experience how breast reconstruction after cancer helps restore not only the body but also transforms and heals the mind and spirit. She founded the organization after her own struggle with breast cancer. About My Hope Chest My Hope Chest is a national non-profit organization that provides breast reconstruction for uninsured and underprivileged breast cancer survivors. Dear Readers,

1.

Creighton did, however, take great issue when I used the words “killed” or “slaughtered.” Unbelievably, he kept “correcting” me and saying the cats were “euthanized.” So here, especially for the Councilman, is the definition of Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relativly painless way for reasons of mercy. Councilman Creighton also suggested I contact Supervisor Pat Vecchio, and I think that’s a great idea. Readers, if you are as upset and outraged as I am, if you feel the need to be a voice for these little voices who will never be heard again, please call Supervisor Vecchio at 631.360.7600 and let him know how you feel. After all, he can’t make the necessary corrections at the shelter if he doesn’t know you want change! Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

I am outraged! It is beyond comprehension that one of our Long Island animal shelters would kill 15 cats in one day, yet that is exactly what happened at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Unfortunately, by the time I started receiving tips about the cats, it was too late - they were already dead. I called and spoke with shelter director George Beatty, who confirmed that the cats had been killed. I’m sorry to tell you he was less than polite on a personal level, and also mumbled something about some of the cats being there for two years or more and unadoptable, which makes this even more horrible. Imagine the sense of terror and betrayal these poor little beings felt as a needle was jabbed into them and they felt their lives draining away! I want you to know Readers, that I asked EVERY rescue organization I know of and NOT ONE was contacted by the Smithtown Shelter or George Beatty and asked to take even one cat.

As a matter of fact, here’s what some of them had to say: “Not a good shelter at all”...“I was never contacted by the Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter in regards to rescuing any cats at the shelter”...“It’s unfortunate that shelters here on LI still resort to killing rather than reaching out for help.” Readers, I have made it known to shelter director Beatty that I would post pictures and write stories about animals at the shelter, but he has never submitted one picture. I have featured blind ten year-old cats, crippled animals, deaf animals...and our readers have always come forward and adopted. There is absolutely no excuse for not reaching out in every way possible to save the lives of these cats. This is an example of the very worst and least progressive in animal sheltering. By the way, Readers, I also reached out to Smithtown Councilman Robert Creighton, who I was told was the town “animal shelter liaison.” I checked the Councilman’s bio and found nothing even remotely related to pets or animals in general, which would explain his less than sympathetic attitude during our phone call. Easy Tiling Ideas

(NAPSI)—Renovations don’t have to be costly, messy and time consuming. There are ways to avoid the headaches often associated with home upgrades. Tiles are a great way to add a punch of personality to your home and many tiling projects can be completed in just one day. With a few tools and some elbow grease, you can breathe new life and flair into any room. Get creative inspiration with simple tiling projects

you can use to liven up your home: 1. Call attention to one wall of a room with a bold tile accent. Be daring with patterns, or make it modern with subway tiles. 2. Tile the kitchen backsplash to add color and protect the wall from cooking messes. Bondera TileMatSet, a doublesided, peel- and-stick tiling adhesive is a great tool to use instead of mortar and mastic, eliminating the mess and allowing you to grout

immediately after positioning the tiles. 3. Modernize old trivets by using the tile adhesive to create a custom tiled pattern that pops against tableware. 4. Explore your creative side by designing a charming tile pattern on an old tabletop, which will add pizzazz to lunches and evening drinks. Earning Top Honors

“Excellence in the workforce begins with excellence in workforce education.” More than 150 students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) for proving themselves the embodiment of this belief. Inclusion in the NTHS is the nation’s highest award for excellence in career and technical education. Barry Tech students were elected for the honor based on superior academic achievement, dedicated community service and the endorsement of the faculty. These students

further distinguished themselves by exemplifying exceptional qualities, such as honesty, leadership, responsibility and good character. “These students have followed their talents and passions to come to this honorable induction. They are the future of our society and economy – they are our dreams of a better world,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “We offer these students our congratulations and best wishes in future endeavors.”

Recognized by business, industry and education as the hallmark of student achievement and leadership, the NTHS helps top students find success in today’s highly competitive workplace by encouraging scholastic achievement and cultivating a desire for personal excellence. Youth Orchestra Auditions The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York will be holding a final round of auditions for new members on the morning of Saturday, September 8th, at Sequoya Middle School in Holbrook, and at Herricks High School in Nassau for all ensembles. There are openings in all of the MYO ensembles in both counties. Those who would like to apply for one of the current openings are invited to call the MYO Office to schedule an appointment at 516.676.MYO1 (6961). Current openings are posted on the web site at www.myo.org. The MYO organization was established in 1993 and is comprised of six orchestras and four vocal ensembles. The entry level String

Orchestras require that applicants have achieved a NYSSMA Level 4 or equivalent. The Concert Orchestras require a Level 5 and the Symphony and Principal Orchestras require a NYSSMA Level 6. The MYO Children’s Choir is open to singers from grades 4 through 8, and the MYO Long Island Youth Chorale is open to high school singers, who have performed the equivalent of a NYSSMA 5 or 6 solo. All Nassau orchestral ensembles and children’s choirs rehearse from September to June on Tuesday evenings at Herricks High School and Middle School. The Suffolk MYO Orchestras rehearse on Thursday evenings at Sequoya Middle School.

The LI Youth Chorale rehearses on Monday evenings at Herricks High School. Next season’s performances will be held in halls including Hofstra University, Adelphi University PAC, and Carnegie Hall. The MYO organization has over 600 young musicians in its ensembles, ranging in age from 8 to 18. They have performed in many major New York and Long Island venues and have toured the world over the past twenty years. For more information about auditions, visit the orchestra’s web site at www.myo.org, of call the MYO office at 516.676.MYO1 (6961) during normal business hours.

Clear Up The Clutter (NAPSI)—While many homeowners complain that they don’t have enough space, they may have more than they think. Surprisingly, according to a survey by the American Cleaning Institute, most clutter in the home is really the result of disorganization. “The majority of people have plenty of space, they just aren’t using the space wisely or efficiently,” explains Perri Kersh, a

professional organizer, owner of Neat Freak and member of the National Association of Professional Organizers. “The attic, for example, is an ideal place for storing certain infrequently used items such as holiday decor.” Organizational products can help you make better use of valuable space that is otherwise wasted. The new AtticMaxx™ Shelving System, for example, provides organized attic

space and easy access to stored items. The shelf system mounts between attic trusses—the triangular wooden structures used to support a pitched roof—to create vertical storage space around an attic floor. It installs in minutes with a screwdriver, a level and four screws. Visit www.AtticMaxx.com for more information and free organizing tips.
