It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring?

Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference.

But this year, it seems different.

This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected?

No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily.

Since when did anything go according to plan?

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart.

So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of.

Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there?

Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population.

I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform.

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing.

They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate?

The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.

The Connetquot Kids Club held their own Alex’s Lemonade Stand on June 4th and 6th, selling lemonade for an hour after school on each day to fight childhood cancer.

Hosted by Connetquot special education teacher Crystal Ann Chiari and social worker Vivian VanKoolwijk, the event raised $640.21 for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, to aid children with cancer. The charity’s goals include raising awareness of childhood cancer causes, funding research on new treatments and cures, and encouraging children to get involved in the effort against the disease.

The lemonade project began during sessions of the Kids Club, a program held throughout the year by Chiari and VanKoolwijk.

“Vivian and I worked with the students in the general education classes and students with special needs to build social skills, build friendships and practice using these skills in and outside of school,” explained Chiari. “The students in the general education classes were fourth- and fifth-graders that Vivian trained and mentored so that they were aware of the skills that we were working on – of various disabilities and how to interact, prompt and redirect the students with special needs. All the students created many social skills and

friendships. It was great to see them in the hallways, assemblies and lunchroom interacting.

Connetquot has amazing students that are caring and accepting of everyone, and the students have really grown together.”

During the Kids Club’s final session of 2011-2012, the students used the various skills they had worked on to learn about Alex’s Foundation and ways they could help, and

then create their lemonade stand, making posters, painting the stands and selling the refreshing drinks. “All of the students could not wait to open the stand,” said Chiari. “Vivian and I are so proud of the students and amazed that they far surpassed their goal of 100 dollars.”

studying with his late father Cantor Fred S. Mannes. He has served both Reform and C o n s e r v a t i v e congregations in Canada and the United States. In addition to his Cantorial duties, he has been the principal of three religious schools.

A former English and Art teacher, Cantor Mannes also worked as a film producer and director/scriptwriter. He is the author of two books of fiction: Nahanni (2007) and Creature Feature (2010). He is married to Dr. Sandra GhitterMannes and they have two grown children and one grandson. Cantor Mannes has a lyric tenor voice with a baritone range that invites congregational participation. For the High Holy Days he will bring traditional liturgical music as well as newer compositions to Sinai Reform.

Services for the High Holidays begin on the evening of Sunday, September 16th and continue on Monday, September 17th. Yom Kippur services start the evening of Tuesday, September 25th and continue on Wednesday, September 26th, then end with a community break fast the evening of the 26th.

The High Holy Days of the Jewish faith, also known as the Days of Awe, are a time for reflection and prayer among Jews.

The High Holy Days are comprised of Rosh Hashanah, known as the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

Rosh Hashanah, for Jews worldwide, marks a time of personal reflection, prayer, and repentance.

Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, is a fast day. On Yom Kippur, Jews pray to atone for both personal and community sins and pray to be “included in the book of life” for the upcoming year.

Though a solemn time, the High Holy Days are also marked by a beautiful liturgical service with prayers sung to beautiful, old and often haunting melodies. As such, Sinai Reform Temple is pleased that Cantor David Mannes will join Rabbi LosbenOstrov, Sinai Reform Temple’s Rabbi, in leading our congregation during this holy time.

Lion Donation

The Lions Club is a sitebased community organization whose mission is “to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding.”

At the end of each school year, the Bay Shore Lions Club serves its community by donating 75 $10 gift cards from

Staples (25 to each of Bay Shore’s three K-2 elementary schools) to help less fortunate students purchase school supplies.

During the school year, the organization also helps with the purchase of eyeglasses and eye exams for local children, sponsors needy families during Thanksgiving, and provides families with

food and gifts during the holidays.

Making Strides Kickoff

On Wednesday, August 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined American Cancer Society representatives at East Wind Caterers for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kick-off breakfast. This year, the Making Strides walks will be held Sunday, October 14th at the Brookhaven Campus at Dowling College, and Sunday, October 21st at Fields 4 and 5 at Jones Beach State

Park.

“I am honored to be a part of this important event,” said Legislator Anker. “The walk is a wonderful way to raise funds while bringing increased awareness to the fight against breast cancer. Having lost a loved one to cancer myself, I continue to strongly advocate for cancer research until a cure is found.”

Since 1993, 8 million

walkers across the United States have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides events. In 2011 alone, 1 million walkers collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease.

Education Grant Stony Brook University announced that the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc., has once again funded the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Collaborative with a $100,000 grant as part of their Innovation Generation National Partnership program.

Through the grant, the STEM Collaborative will provide resources and facilitators for the creation of four STEM Tech clubs and the continuation of the successful TechPREP program. This past year the grant served more than 300 students from high-needs school districts.

STEM clubs are located at the Brentwood Freshman Center in Brentwood, William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Harrison Hale Community Educational Resource Center in Middle Island and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County headquarters in Commack. STEM Tech will run throughout the 2012-2013 academic year with students preparing service learning projects culminating with a conference where they will present projects addressing some of the regional environmental issues currently affecting Long Island.

In addition to STEM Tech, the grant provides for a fifth year of support for the TechPREP program beginning in March 2013. TechPREP is a multi-track program that introduces technology fields to girls in sixth through eighth grades. It provides 90 hours of educational and experiential learning for middle school girls in the areas of computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering.

“This grant will allow TechPREP and STEM Tech to continue developing

opportunities for students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics while meeting a variety of role models from the community, industry and the university,” said Carrie-Ann Miller, Director of Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP. “Students learn first-hand about innovation, project development and the potential they have to impact the future.”

Paul Siegel, an Adjunct Lecturer and STEM Smart administrator in the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP, observed that the support from Motorola Solutions also provides a way for Stony Brook University and the Long Island business community to spread some of their intellectual capital and entrepreneurial acumen into areas of need.

Members of the STEM Collaborative include: Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology & Society, Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, Stony Brook’s Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, the Long Island Regional Service Learning Network and ConnectToTech, a consortium of industry representatives.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation's Innovation Generation program is designed to inspire students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Innovation Generation funding equips students with the skills essential to both their lives today and their future success through funding, employee volunteers and intragrantee collaboration.

This year, the program

will provide $4.9 million in grants to 87 organizations, including STEM Tech and TechPREP, to support hands-on, innovative after-school programs, science and math clubs, teacher training and mentoring programs.

“Each year, I am truly amazed by the groundbreaking work our grant recipients accomplish through the Innovation Generation program,” said Matt Blakely, Director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation.

“These organizations are playing an active role in developing the future generation of scientists, engineers and innovators in the United States. Beyond funding, STEM Tech and TechPREP will receive ongoing support from Motorola Solutions employee volunteers, who will act as mentors, tutors, and experts in STEM careers, which utilizes the expertise of Motorola Solutions’ workforce to inspire the next generation of inventors.

The STEM Collaborative is now a part of the Innovation Generation network, where it can create vital connections with hundreds of other organizations with the common vision to make a greater impact on STEM education.

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing.

They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate?

The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.

As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population.

I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform.
