The Future of Our Website In today’s technological era having a good looking and userfriendly website is more important than you think.

For us, our website mainly served as a backlog for all seven magazines’ feature articles and local stories.

Having all that information available online made it easy for both, advertisers and consumers, to share these fantastic community articles with friends, family and colleagues from their phone, computer or tablet.

If you’ve checked our Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles website, nnlflorida.com recently you may have noticed that; 1) The site is a little outdated, 2) A lot of the links are not working properly, 3) The website actually went down for a considerable amount of time and it is still malfunctioning, 4) Navigating through it and finding old articles from previous issues is very complicated, 5) Overall, it is not very user friendly...

First of all, I want to personally apologize in the name of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles for any trouble or inconvenience this may have caused you.

A few months ago, our web server collapsed, the site went down for a few days, a lot of links got broken and our hosting company was less than helpful in solving these issues.

I personally tried to fix all the server and database issues but it was beyond my web programming experience. So I reached out to an old friend, who is a very experienced coder/programmer and had him

check out the site for us.

My friend overwhelmed me with big and confusing programming terms that left my brain hurting, so I won’t do that to you. I will make it easier and give you a short analogy.

Our current website can be compared to an old Blackberry phone; it was great when it first came out, everyone was impressed with the technology and the phone did everything it was supposed to do and more. Until Apple and Samsung came out with better, smarter phones dominating the market and the Blackberry devices became outdated.

Sure, you can still find people that use a Blackberry phone (I don’t know anyone though, do you?), but if you could have a device with brand new technology, that’s way more efficient and delivered better results, wouldn’t you want it?

Pretty much, my friend told me that our website, just like the good ol’ Blackberry, was obsolete and it was best to “get rid of it” and “get on with the times and upgrade” and that is exactly what we’re doing.

We’re getting rid of the old, and coming hot with the new!

Our current domain; nnlflorida.com will soon be redirected to our brand new, user-friendly, modern looking website:

tbnewsandlifestyles.com I am still working on transfering all the data and articles from our old website to this new one, so as of now, you’ll only be able to access some of our newest 2018 stories. We do have a section labeled “Digital Issues,” in

which you’ll find past digital volumes of our seven magazines, and you can actually read all articles from there.

I included an online Calendar of Events where you’ll be able to find some fun and family-friendly events happening in the greater Tampa Bay area. We will also feature delicious recipes, sports news and so much more! (But as of today, it is still a work in progress...so keep checking it regularly, as I am uploading fresh content on a daily basis!)

All I can say is that I am pretty excited about this project, as I had been looking to give our old website a “facelift,” for quite some time, so everything happened for a reason. I love our new look and I truly hope you do too, and hope you’ll find it user-friendly and easy to navigate.

Just Say No to Drugs – The Doctor Casey O’Donnell Story

Pain can be defined as physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury. It is a reality of everyday life. Accidents, spinal degeneration from aging/disease, and sports injuries are daily occurrences. Doctors will sometimes prescribe opioids to manage and control that pain.

Herein lies a part of the problem.

It is generally accepted that we are facing the worst opioid dependency crisis in our history.

More than 64,000 people die from overdoses each year; the nation’s life expectancy has fallen for two years in a row (time.com/the opioid diaries).

In a world where there is not only “an app for that” but, unfortunately, a pill for that as well, it is refreshing to meet someone who believes that opioids are not the only way to treat trauma and pain. Dr. Casey O’Donnell is a proponent of another, nonaddictive option, interventional pain management.

Dr. O’Donnell defines himself as a “Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist,” a Physiatrist, who practices what he calls “functional rehabilitation.”

He is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabiltation, and Pain Medicine.

Board certification is the additional step, involving testing and review by a board of his peers, that a dedicated doctor takes to ensure that his patients benefit from the latest techniques and state-of-theart advances available for each of his specialties. He is board certified by both the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as the American Board of Pain Medicine.

His goal, Dr. O’Donnell says, is to “make people as good as possible,” believing that “the body has the innate ability to heal itself.”

Dr. O’Donnell was educated at the University of New EnglandCollege of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, ME. Although both Allopathic Physicians (MDs), and Osteopathic Physicians (DOs) are fully licensed medical doctors, receiving the same overall educational curriculum, there are some basic differences between their training and philosophies; DOs employ a whole-person approach to treatment and care.

Both can practice in all areas of medicine but, as Dr. O’Donnell said in a recent interview, Osteopathic physicians receive training with a greater focus on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems during medical school and believe in a holistic approach, that the body has the ability to heal itself, and that structure and function are integrally related.

During our interview, Dr. O’Donnell handed me a small metal object, semi-conical in shape. The Superion,

manufactured by Vertiflex Spine, is a spacer that he inserts in the spine through about a one-inch incision that takes the pressure off the spine to help alleviate the symptoms caused by lumbar spinal stenosis.

The procedure is performed as an out-patient in one of the two surgical centers at Florida Medical Clinic. He is one of only a few doctors nationally who can perform this spine-related procedure.

According to Mayo clinic, lumbar stenosis is “the narrowing of the open spaces in the lower lumbar spine,” a condition that causes low back and leg pain while walking and can seriously impact mobility.

me feel like there is a light at the end of the very dark and painful tunnel.” As Dr. O’Donnell notes, “You can come to me if you are having degenerative disease to improve your function … but don’t come to me for opioids.”

Tech Talk with Bob: Introduction to Malware Malware is software designed to break into and possibly harm your computer system without you knowing. Malware almost always hides itself. Some malware can even take control of your computer.

There are many different types of malware which includes: viruses, Trojans, logic bombs, adware and spyware, rootkits, worms, etc.

Viruses can be difficult to identify. They are sneaky and come in many different forms. A macro virus will exploit applications. When it's activated, it can cause significant damage and spread itself to other computers. For example, it can send itself as an attachment to all e-mail addresses in your address book.

A Trojan is named after the Trojan horse in Greek mythology. A Trojan can be mistaken to be an application like a screensaver or a game that you may unknowingly download and run because it looks cool or is fun to play. This type of malware is usually a free program you see on a website or is often recommended via email from a wellintentioned friend. Trojans do not

typically harm your computer’s operation but they could create a backdoor into your system and establish communication with the attacker, giving remote control of your computer to the attacker.

A logic bomb is malware that runs when predefined conditions have been met. For example, logic bombs usually lay dormant until a date and time is reached, then they execute. Their damage can range

from minor glitches to completely wiping out your computer’s hard disk drive.

Adware plays, displays or downloads advertisements to your computer.

Adware can spy on your browsing activity and display advertisements based on your browsing history. Spyware often collects personal information about your internet surfing habits and passwords.

Spyware may also install other programs that can change your computer’s settings or redirect web browsers to unwanted sites. It is designed to perpetrate identity theft by accessing your online accounts with online retailers and financial institutions, such as PayPal, banks and other e-commerce sites. The attacker can use the data gathered to remove funds from those accounts or

make unauthorized transactions.

Keyloggers and other software are used to capture usernames and passwords for these types of sites as you log in.

Installing anti-malware software on your computer is the first step in protecting yourself. Second, new out-of-the-box, anti-malware software needs to have all of its settings properly configured to provide you with the highest level of protection possible. It is best to have a certified professional configure this software as soon as it is installed.

A Taste of Bundt Cake Changed a Career

By Deborah Bostock-Kelley In December 2015, Tammy Mencia experienced serendipity.

She was a longtime successful mortgage broker in Jacksonville and had just tasted a sample of a bundt cake that would transform her destiny and future career path.

She and husband Ralph had been looking at different franchise opportunities and she was impressed by the moistness and flavor of the bundt cake. She googled the company to learn more information and discovered Nothing Bundt Cakes fit the individually-owned franchise business profile they’d been seeking with a future move to Tampa.

After months of an intensive screening process, culminating in a three-hour interview with the franchise president in the home office in Dallas, Texas, Tammy and Ralph debuted Nothing Bundt Cakes in March 2017 in the Village Center, Carrollwood.

“We offer 10 flavors of cake in 4 different sizes – 9 flavors we have all the time and we have a featured flavor that lasts 1 to 2 months,” said Tammy. “It is all baked in the bakery with a full kitchen in the

back and are made with fresh ingredients including fresh eggs, real butter and cream cheese. Our signature cream cheese frosting – is delicious and our cakes are super moist.”

Standard bundt cake flavors are chocolate, chocolate chip, classic vanilla, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, carrot, lemon, marble, pecan praline, carrot and cinnamon swirl. They also offer feature flavors on a monthly basis that include Chocolate Turtle, Strawberries and Creme, Lemon Raspberry, Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint Chocolate Chip and currently offering Confetti until Oct 1. A gluten-free chocolate chip cookie bundt cake flavor is available for those that suffer from a gluten allergy.

Tammy’s personal flavor favorite is white chocolate raspberry and for a rotating feature flavor, pumpkin spice which will be available on October 1.

“The difference in our cake is the texture of the cake and how

moist it is. It's the first thing everyone says when they taste our cakes. We're famous for the thick frosting petals that adorn each of our cakes. All of our decorations are handcrafted in the back of the bakery to add the personal touch for each person’s celebration.”

The shop has a huge book to share ideas for different bundt cake uses. There are the typical birthday, retirement, anniversary and holiday suggestions, but then they offer innovative ideas like tiered wedding bundt and bundlet cakes, and even gender reveal bundt cakes.

Tammy described her employees and the bakery's involvement in the community as the two things that she found most rewarding about being the coowner of Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Tammy has 14 employees, but is looking to hire a few more seasonal employees for the upcoming holidays.

Though actively involved in the local community, the charity Nothing Bundt Cakes selected to sponsor is Joshua House, and the bakery provides monthly birthday cakes for the children.

“We take them their own individual cake because some of the kids had never been able to celebrate a birthday. We love that part of it.”

Though her long-term goal is to open many different locations, Tammy is in the process of opening her second location in Wesley Chapel, run by friend and business partner Lori Chait, by the close of 2017.

“My partner in the Wesley Chapel location, Lori, is a friend of mine of 40 years, since third grade.

She came here from Virginia to help me open the Carrollwood location and was so interested, that she and her husband wanted to get involved and open the Wesley

Chapel location.”

Nothing Bundt Cakes offers a birthday club. Shoppers can sign up and receive a free bundlet on their birthday. Corporate also sends out E-newsletters with coupons and discounts to subscribers. A loyalty reward program provides a free matching bundt cake, bundtlet, bundtini after the purchase of 12 dozen bite-sized bundtinis, 12 bundlets or 12 bundt cakes.

About ninety percent of advertising comes from word of mouth, from patrons coming into the shop off the street. Tammy also markets several days a week to local businesses and participates in local events throughout Carrollwood and Wesley Chapel.

“I was looking for something different. My husband and I looked at many franchises before

this. None of them grabbed us like this did. This is a great brand. It only took the one taste and we knew instantly, definitely that this was it, that this was something we could build,” said Tammy. “I have so much less stress in my life now.

It’s very rewarding. I wanted to work for myself instead of somebody else. It’s a business that everyone is always happy and celebrating some special event in their life or someone else’s.”

Tampa Bay Rowdies Partner with Odessa Soccer Club As Odessa Soccer Club gears up for its third year, it will do so as an Official Youth Soccer Community Partner of The Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Rowdies have committed to help the Odessa Mustangs organization develop its club and players.

“We are ecstatic about the support Mustang families will receive from our region's professional club, as we continue to develop our players. We anticipate great things as we leverage the Rowdies' elite methods, and resources,” Odessa Soccer Club’s league director Jim Young said.

The Rowdies will help Odessa Soccer Club build and promote its program, assist in fundraising, and provide youth soccer clinics. “The Rowdies game day experience at Al Lang field is an amazing time for our families and players. In addition

to this kind of fun, we are excited about the opportunity our players will have to develop their soccer skill from training they will receive from the Rowdies’ coaches and players,” Young stated.

Originally established in 1975, The Rowdies were the first professional sports franchise in the area.

“The Rowdies are the best soccer club in our region. To learn from them and apply their best practices and training methods in our club is an extremely fortunate opportunity,” Young said.

He is there because he loves both the community and what he does and another doctor may not have the same enthusiasm or passion. It is him alone dividing his time between his practice in Trinity and Palm Harbor.

Later, they had a church meeting and all the kids were holding their toothbrushes,” he said. “I know if we’re not there helping them out, very likely no one is helping them out.

It’s a pretty cool feeling to pay it forward, a lot of those kids never had something we as Americans take for granted – something as simple as a toothbrush.”

Dr. Albert believes whether home or abroad, sharing your talents and gifts is important.

“I personally feel that it is important to use your gifts and knowledge in ways that are not solely self-serving. There’s a balance between having a practice and giving back to

the community and the world.

Orthodontics is really one of the professions where it still is really personal and not like ordering prescriptions online or going to a medical office where it’s a different nurse or doctor all the time,” he said.

“I’ve value that I get to develop relationships with my patients and their families over time. I’m the only doctor that you or your child will see over the course of orthodontic treatment and that personal relationship is very important to me.

That’s what I think sets my practice apart from most clinics, and with that continuity of care and supervision comes predictably excellent and efficient results.”
