Excel Creative Learning Academy has been raising the bar for early childhood education from the moment they opened their doors in 2012. Offering the tightest of security measures, including fingerprint technology, an advanced age-appropriate learning curriculum for all ages, and wholesome meals prepared on campus, Excel Creative Learning Academy’s goal is to engage, enrich and empower their students. What’s more, they are the only 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week preschool to offer extended and even overnight hours for children from 6 weeks old to 12 years old. Excel Creative Learning Academy (ECLA) is conveniently located on the Medical Center of Trinity campus, at 9332 S.R. 54 on the second floor of the Medical Arts Building. It’s hard to imagine a safer

place for a child while they are away from their family, and the safety precautions that this school provides for the children and their families are out of this world. Children love being able to ride an elevator on their way to their cool school, and parents rave about the privacy and the peace-of-mind that comes with ECLA’s unique location. Richard Michael chose ECLA for his family and says, “Hands down the best! The entire staff and all of the teachers are amazing! My son loves attending this school, he is excited to go every day!” Excel Creative Learning Academy provides programs for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children, moving them along through the curriculum based on their individual abilities. This fall they will be adding an additional classSee “ECLA” on page 42.

Pasco County Public Transportation Expansion of Service Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) works to make commuting easy and efficient for Pasco County travelers. PCPT buses purchased new in 2012 have security camera systems installed that enhance the safety and security of the riding public as well as the drivers. In addition, a sound insulation package provides for a more comfortable, quiet ride. The buses can carry up to 34 passengers and offer low-floor passenger access for ease of boarding and alighting through front and rear doors. While investing in buses to offer passengers a safe and comfortable ride, PCPT’s Cross County Connector spans the entire east-west length of Pasco County along State Road 54 (Route 54) as this corridor continues to develop into a major east-west growth center. PCPT buses travel along S.R. 54 hourly from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: GETTING READY FOR THE FALL By Dr. Wayne Adams The ACT Exam on September 10th begins the fall series of college admissions exams, followed by the first SAT Exam on October 1st. There are two more ACT Exams in the fall: October 22nd and December 10th; and two more SAT Exams in the fall: November 5th and December 3rd. Now that the results for the June SAT are in so we have two tests for a little history, most students believe that the SAT Exam is far more difficult than the old SAT Exam, and is now more difficult than the ACT Exam. The College Board maintains the new SAT Exam is a better predictor for success in college and the standardized bell curve will smooth out any inconsistencies and problems, but college admissions officers remain skeptical until they see several years of data. As in the past, I suspect the actual corrolation between the SAT Exam and scores on IQ tests will remain about the same. Whatever the reality is now or will become, the simple fact that colleges take into account the SAT Exam for admitting students will guar-

18

antee its continuing importance to students and parents. More students nationwide appear to be shifting to the ACT Exam as their primary interest, with the SAT as supplemental if they are not happy with their ACT scores. The two key reasons are the ACT Exam has changed little (except for the essay), it is totally acceptable as a standardized exam for college admissions officers, and if a student takes the ACT then that student does not have to take any SAT Subject Tests (as most top colleges require for full consideration). On the new SAT, my students continue to improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, and Math sections. The new “total score” of 1600 combines the individualized Writing and Reading scores into one “superscore” titled “Reading”, and a separate inividualized Writing score incorporates the results of the Essay. As you can see, the scoring has become far more complicated. I always show my students exactly how the new scoring system works as part of their doing their best on the exam. Getting students used to the new

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NNLFlorida.com

distribution of math questions, and especially the longer sentences, takes a modified tutoring approach. So far, all of my students have made this transition well – although it takes a little more time focused on the math. The is where my “reverse engineering” has proven particularly valuable so students not only understand the way to do problems correctly, they understand “the way the test thinks”, which is particularly helpful when selecting between two possible answers. Both the SAT and the ACT Essays now require far better “critical thinking” that includes identifying issues; developing a logical argument; using evidence; far more detailed understanding of style elements such as tone, diction, and syntax; and correct grammar. Most of my students are weak in each of these areas, even those capable of being admitted to the finest colleges and universities. So I have added a special section with proprietary handouts to help strengthen these areas. If you would like to talk with me further, please call me at 727-2530639 or send an e mail to me at

AUGUST 2016

wwa0811@mykolab.com. And I am sure you will like my Special Supplement titled “How To Negotiate With Colleges” that has saved from $1,000 to $10,000 a year for many of my students and their parents. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the top SAT and ACT Tutors in the country and a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor. His students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, Duke, U Chicago, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, UCLA, USC, Boston College, Northeastern, UF, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, St. Leo’s, New College of Florida, U Miami, FIU, and many other colleges and universities; often with academic, athletic, or music scholarships. Normally, student scores increase 200 to 300 points on the SAT, and 4 – 8 points on the ACT. He has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice. You can contact him at 727-253-0639 or wwa0811@gmail.com.

Chris Cooley Wants to Earn Your Vote to be a New Voice for Pasco It’s all about the people of Pasco County for Chris Cooley, who says he is determined to bring residents together and form a community that everyone can be proud of. He spends 90% of his life in District 5; in fact, this is where his business is located. He’s there 7 days a week and works hard to grow his business and employ a number of Pasco County residents. Chris says that over the past 10 years, he has noticed more and more of the same downward trend, especially in regard to the District 5 portion of the county. When asked why he wants to run for District 5 Commissioner and be a voice for the community, Cooley states, “I see so much potential here and there’s just no reason why year in and year out it’s the same story. The crime is higher here than in the rest of the county. In fact, in the past three years we lead the county in total number of drug arrests. There is an obvious issue with crime in District 5 and

26

I don’t think anyone can question that. I’ve never been one to just sit around and complain and never take action so I started watching the County Commission meetings. I decided to step up and be the new voice for District 5 in Pasco. I can get things done. I can work with anyone and come up with solutions to difficult problems, as I have done throughout my career. I live and spend so much time here I felt it would be irresponsible to continue to stand by idly and do nothing about it so here I am. “The current County Commissioner for District 5 has been in his position for 12 years, has vocally stated he plans to run for another two terms, and when he originally ran for the job he promised economic growth. So far that economic growth hasn’t come and to give him another four years of failure just doesn’t make sense.” Cooley adds, “When I finally

decided to go all in was when I started researching more about the SunWest Park project. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s going to take us 97 years to get our initial investment back. How is that a good deal for Pasco County? We were told it was such a great thing for Pasco, how profitable it will be and how much economic growth it would create. Well guess what? Ninety-seven years to get back an initial investment is the worst deal I’ve ever seen negotiated! It’s not a good deal for Pasco; it’s a good deal for the investors and I’ll make sure this kind of skewed deal never happens again.” Chris has been in corporate America for 18 years. Every position he’s ever had has been a leadership role going all the way back to when he was 18 years old and joined the Marine Corps. “I have a call to serve that is inherent within me,” he shares. “My family is the same way; my younger

We don’t need to raise opportunities that will make Pasco

more appealing to businesses, which will bring higher paying jobs. “We need to prepare for and entice multiple areas including manufacturing, medical research, and start laying the groundwork for high speed Internet, which will attract the growing tech marketplace. We need to expand our training facility presence to grow our employable base of residents for these companies to pull from. We need to embrace the largest growing Veteran population in the country by developing a transitional training facility. There are two areas that Veterans need assistance for: Our growing homeless Veteran population, and the Veterans who are just now leaving their current military service. Many don’t understand that the military trains people in healthcare, administration and accounting. They train people with skill sets to be electricians, mechanics, contractors, and so much more. Why are we not embracing this talented pool of people that already have leadership traits and a hardworking frame of mind?” Chris continues, “We need to develop a plan and then work that plan to become more multi-faceted in our approach.”

Quick Bio: Chris Cooley has been married to his wife Jennifer for 15 years and they have two daughters, two sons, and two grandchildren. Chris and Jennifer moved to Pasco County after Chris’ brother Josh, who was a Pasco Deputy, was wounded in Iraq while serving in the Marine Corps. Chris is a service connected disabled Veteran himself (USMC), and comes from a family where military service was a core value, with his brothers serving as well. Chris Cooley joined the Marine Corps directly out of high school and served from 1988-1992 with Tours of Duty including: Mediterranean Sea, Desert Shield/Storm, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Red Sea. Honorably discharged as a Corporal at 22 years old, Chris Cooley had already achieved the following Awards: 2 Letters of Commendation, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Southeast Asia Campaign Ribbon-3 stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon-3 stars, 2 Certificates of Meritorious Appreciation, Good Conduct Ribbon, National Defense Medal, Marine Unit Citation. Moffitt Cancer Center Volunteers Making a Difference! During his 32-year career with the cruise industry, Malcolm Weathers traveled all over the world and retirement isn’t slowing him down. He visited Denmark this year and Africa is on the horizon for 2017, but perhaps the most meaningful trip he makes, is the one he takes twice a week to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Weathers is often the first face patients see as they arrive for surgery and he’s the person family members rely on to stay updated during a loved one’s operation. Weathers is one of 700 volunteers who give their time at Moffitt. He’s been a volunteer since 2010 and earned the title of Volunteer of the Year in 2015. Weathers says, “Volunteering at Moffitt is special to me because I have a feel-good attitude when I leave. It inspires me because of the people I help. I see them and they’ll write me a note or they’ll send me a box of candy or cookies that they’ve made. I’ve gotten flowers. Because when they’re there for four or five, six hours it’s probably the most hectic time they’d ever spent in their life, waiting for the

32

results of the operation and then to see if their loved one is going to be okay. So you’re there to help them and that’s inspirational.” Weathers lost his father and several friends to cancer and feels volunteering at Moffitt is a way he can touch the lives of the patients. He has a lot of friends who volunteer with a variety of organizations to get out of the house for a few hours, but that’s not how Weathers views his volunteer duties at Moffitt. Instead, he looks forward to helping people and gaining inspiration from their strength. Weathers jokes that he sometimes walks 2 ½ - 3 miles on the days he volunteers. “At the end of the day you get in your car and you start to leave and you say, ‘I’m tired.’ It’s a good tired, if there is such a thing,” Weathers explains. “But, you feel like you’ve done something very rewarding and that’s what it’s all about with me it’s to take care of the people there, the patients.” Weathers estimates he’s touched hundreds of lives as a Moffitt volunteer. His motto is “never leave anyone

The volunteers at Moffitt Cancer Center find it very rewarding to be able to make a difference in the lives of those undergoing treatment for cancer in the dark” and he stands by it. He fondly recalls a woman who was waiting for her husband of 55 years to come out of surgery. He knew she was scared, so he gave her up to the minute information about her husband’s procedure and tried to help her

By Matt Selby What if I told you the “good guys” from the “good ol’ days” still exist? We’re talking about the blue collar guys that treat you and your family as they would treat their own. At times, it seems like a thing of the past. If you spend five minutes online you’ll find negative reviews on many plumbing companies in the area. In today’s economy it’s tougher than ever to find honest, hard, fair work but we’ve found it. We found a company who will work hard for you and your family to fix any and all of your plumbing and/or septic problems. Most importantly, they’re a reputable and licensed company. I can promise you this…if you’re not happy with something we did for you, I will make it right. Go ahead and look them up next time you’re online and you’ll find glowing reviews from tons of satisfied local customers. You’ll find an Angie’s List Super Service Award, an almost 5 star review on Facebook (you can’t please everyone), an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau, and an almost 5-star rating on just about every review site on the net including google which they boast a 4.8 out of 5 rating! That’s no easy task especially when you have competitors constantly hiring other

I put my trust for all my personal and business plumbing and septic needs in the hands of Tampa Bay Plumbers; in fact, one of my best friends in the world, Ryan Penna, plays a paramount role within the company as their production manager. I think this is what truly differentiated your program. I came in at 325 pounds and wanted to get to 250 pounds. While I was motivated you guys definitely kept refocusing me on

my abilities and potential. I got wonderful results and subsequently we tailored my diet to fit my needs as I increased my exercise regimen to twice per day. I finished at 195 pounds. Wow, this was fantastic. This included multiple customizations of my diet to meet my exercise and nutritional requirements. I couldn’t have done this without Doctor’s Choice and the unique way that you guys will customize diet’s based on how your patients are doing!” When it’s time to get serious about your health, don’t waste your time with diets. stallations. We make sure that everything fits, we install everything ourselves and we don’t use any subcontractors. And because we make so many custom treatments, we like to measure and provide a free design consultation to all of our clients.” Pam explained that motorization is big in blinds and shades. Steven and Robert are trained to professionally install all of the products that Williams Window Treatments offers. The Williams family stands behind their work and their products, and the excellent reputation of their company is worth far more to them than anything. Local Realtor Melody Meoni trusts Pam when it comes to helping

her clients make the right choices when trying to sell a home. She had Pam go out and look at a home on the market with a large window that was bare. Looking at the space, which had a gorgeous open backyard and a nice tall privacy fence, Pam recommended doing nothing and leaving the window bare to fully embrace the view. Melody had thought exactly the same thing but wanted Pam’s opinion. Hearing an honest opinion that cost a small business owner a sale, Melody said, “Pam, that is why I refer my clients to you – I tell them, ‘Pam Williams is not just out to make a sale, she is going to tell you the truth.’ ” It’s important to Pam to help clients find what is right for them –

She says, “I’ll tell them that it is okay to wait.” Every few months, new fabrics come out so if you don’t find the look you want the first time you look, go back later and see what’s new! “ECLA”

couldn’t be more thankful!”

Continued from page 1

Demonstrating a Commitment to Technology, Communication & Curriculum for All One of the many things that make ECLA so unique is the philosophy behind the school. They are not a chain, but a private preschool, avoiding the term daycare because of the amount of effort and attention aimed at participation in a fun and engaging learning curriculum, even for the youngest of children. Director Erika Mahoney is dedicated to this program’s philosophy, and as a Certified Teacher in the state of Florida for Kindergarten through 6th grade, Mahoney is uniquely qualified as director to create a curriculum for the children in her care that not only meets, but exceeds the standards. She says, “As a former educator, my job is to get them ready for Kindergarten.” Technology is introduced to the classroom from day one, as the teachers are able to seamlessly expand the walls of their classroom by using their SMART Board. This is fantastic, as many children will have a SMART Board in their classrooms when they

room for three- and four-year-olds. ECLA also offers a before and after care program for school-aged children who attend Trinity Elementary School! ECLA is an amazing school for children of varying ages, abilities and interests. According to their website, ECLA is focused on keeping their class sizes small and “comply with NAEYC standards and exceed the Florida Department of Children and Families Child Care Rules and Regulations Under Chapter 65C-22 of the Florida Administrative Code for Child Care Standards.” What that means for parents, is that their children are receiving the individual care and attention that they deserve. Jillian Byrd-Fernandez said, “This is a place that feels more like a family that truly goes above and beyond. I have a child with special needs and it was a difficult decision to put him in childcare. Fortunately, I found Excel Creative Learning Academy. The entire staff has accommodated my son’s needs and has provided a loving and nurturing environment for him. I

enter Kindergarten. Children learning, growing and playing throughout the day at Excel Creative Learning Academy have the opportunity to experience hands-on activities and projects, character development, enrichment opportunities and more. One of the other ways that ECLA uses technology is through a phone app called Digital Daily Notes. Through the app on their smart phone, parents have access to these notes and can find out how things are going at school, when their child napped, when they used the restroom or had their diaper changed, and what they ate throughout the day. Teachers love sharing pictures through the app as well, and parents are relieved to know that their child is having a great day while they are away. ECLA also uses their check-in and out program to share notes with parents and to facilitate communication. While technology, communication and curriculum are important, there’s nothing as important as having the right teachers! The staff at ECLA is handpicked by Mahoney for their educational experience, their dedication to their students, and for their commitment to the ECLA philosophy. Each

teacher completes a background check, and the entire school is under the watchful eye of Mahoney, as there’s a camera in each classroom, hallway and on the playground. In fact, even when Mahoney is at her desk, she can see each of the children. This is a fantastic tool, not just for the director, but for the staff-and for parents as well. Mahoney says, “We use the camera system as a tool. We tell parents

that we will pull up anything they’d like to see.” This commitment to accountability is very unique, and gives parents peace-of-mind. For example, if a child gets a boo-boo while playing on the playground, the parent can see how it happened. The school is eager to be a team with each child’s family, and is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of each child while teach-

ing them and helping them to grow. Mahoney adds, “We work really hard to be a top notch school, and not a daycare. Even though we take infants as young as 6 weeks old, we do so much more than a traditional daycare.”

play safely outside, deepen relationships with their friends and have some good old-fashioned fun! This year, Excel Creative Learning Academy installed additional sunshades over the playground, allowing the children the chance to enjoy playing outside on their state-of-the-art playground facility without being exposed to the hot sun. While playing outside, the kids have the chance to visit and participate in the herb garden, the flower garden and the vegetable garden! What a wonderful opportunity for children to realize where food comes from! Speaking of food, Excel Creative Learning Academy provides an affordable lunch program that is made entirely in-house. Equipped with a warming kitchen, ECLA offers a healthy lunch for children that the kids actually want to eat! Parents can sign up for the entire month or simply

choose the days they’d like to participate. ECLA is a 100% peanut-free facility! Tiffany Nance said, “I love Excel Creative Learning Academy! We were really nervous about sending Kody to school since he has never been away from the both of us since he was born. As soon as we walked in I knew this was the perfect school for him… We love this school, and so does Kody!” Excel Creative Learning Academy is located in the Medical Arts Building on the Medical Center of Trinity Campus at 9332 SR 54, Suite 204, and is open Mon. – Fri., 6:30 a.m.– 6:30 p.m., with an option of weekends and nights available based on demand.
