By Dara Tucker Excel Creative Learning Academy (ECLA) is celebrating its Anniversary this month! Two years ago, the new state-of-the-art preschool academy opened its doors in the Medical Arts Building on the Medical Center of Trinity campus on State Road 54, offering full preschool programs for babies from six weeks old up to children through age four, and some programs for elementary age students. Excel Creative Learning Academy aims to provide a safe and interactive learning environment that will engage, enrich and empower the lives of their students. While I visited the campus I noticed students learn through handson projects in their interactive, enrich-

ing classrooms. Teachers use state-approved Creative Curriculum and SMART Board technology to help each child’s education and character development. In addition to seeing children engaged in their daily routine, I also saw first-hand an enrichment program called Tumbles Gymnastics, but Excel Creative Learning Academy also offers Happy Feet soccer, and Little Techs and Spanish starting fall 2014. ECLA’s dedicated staff starts with Director Erika Mahoney. Erika has a background that includes early childhood education and she is a Florida state licensed teacher for grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Erika came on board at ECLA before See “ECLA” on page 50.

Outdoor Water Conservation Water is our most precious resource; we have an opportunity to ensure water for all people, animals, and the environment by increasing the efficiency at which it is used and changing the wasteful habits. Currently, the average Pasco County resident uses 115 gallons of water per day for indoor use, while a majority of water used, per person, is for outdoor use. Pasco County Utilities would like to share some tips on water conservation and to provide the water restrictions schedule to assist with this effort. The biggest use of water at home is generally the irrigation system. Irrigation can use water at an average of 5-10 gallons per minute and 500-1000 gallons per hour. Over watering can kill the lawn, waste money, and hurt the environment, so irrigate only when it is necessary. It is necessary to water the lawn when there are signs of wilt or during the warmer seasons on your specified watering day. Optimize your watering schedule by

use of a shutoff nozzle or a hand hose will allow the operator to direct a specific flow of water with less waste and can be shut off easier without turning off the hose base nozzle.

watering only once a week and ¾ an inch of water per cycle. Root health determines if a plant needs more or less water to thrive. Cutting the grass to the appropriate height for the specific grass species will encourage roots to grow deeper, while cutting the grass too low can weaken the grass and allow for invasive weeds to grow. Shallow roots require more water for sustenance; deeper root structures hold moisture longer and cause the grass to become more tolerant to drought, disease, and lawn pests. Gardening choices will affect the water needs of each plant. Foreign plant species require more water to adapt to the climate and may even compete with the native plants. Mulching (2”-3” inches of layers) can help to retain moisture, prevent erosion, and suppress weed growth. Unattended water equipment can waste a hundred gallons in minutes. Water can be saved by using the proper equipment at the nozzle. The

Let “Mom” Make You Something Special at Alex’s Place Restaurant & Bar By Julie Kanehl If you’re hungry for a restaurant that serves home-style cooked meals with flair, but makes you feel at ease and at home, then you’ve got to go to Alex’s Place Restaurant and Bar in Port Richey. Located at 7845 Grand Boulevard near the Cotee River, Alex’s Place is one of those rare places where the owners not only know you by name, but want you to call and let them know you’re coming so they can make you something they know you’re going to like, even if it’s not on the menu. Owned by Alex and Sholeh Babazadeh, they’ll tell you right off the bat to just call Sholeh, “Mom.” Everyone does, and she likes it that way. Open for lunch, dinner and drinks, Alex’s Place is much larger than it appears. In fact, it’s huge! With multiple rooms to dine in, two bars, indoor and outdoor seating, flat screen TVs and a game room that includes a pool table, it’s a wonder that Alex’s

10

Place isn’t packed all the time. And I haven’t even mentioned the menu yet. The truth is, “Mom” is an amazing cook. While she has a cook on staff, she does a lot of the cooking herself, and everything that comes out of the kitchen is so good. Primarily American fare with a touch of her Persian heritage sprinkled in, the burgers are handmade and juicy, the sandwiches are assembled with care, and the specials are gone before you can say Port Richey five times fast. Speaking of specials, there really are too many to mention, but Mom told me that Friday night is prime rib night adding, “The prime rib is served at 5, but you better make a reservation if you want some because it’s usually gone by 5:15!” I know you’re tempted to laugh here, but she’s serious. While most restaurants have people call for reservations so they can save you a seat, “Mom” wants you to call so she can make you up something special. It’s no wonder people come in and feel like they’re at home.

The menu aims to please with appetizers, snacks, salads, sandwiches and delicious entrees. Beautifully plated, the food listed on the menu is what you might expect at an American bar and grill, but the taste is distinctly homemade. From their Buffalo Shrimp to their Baby Back Ribs, there’s something on the menu for everyone. That said, as a customer you get the impression from the get-go that “Mom” will probably make you anything you ask her for, if she’s in the mood to make it. For example, if

JULY 2014

you’re going to go, call ahead and ask her to make some of her Kalam Polow. Don’t ask what it is, just ask her to make it, because I, personally haven’t stopped thinking about it since I tried it the other day. Of course, that’s not on the menu, and it’s only a side dish, but trust me on this. Decidedly relaxed, Alex’s Place is the perfect place to come with friends or family for a relaxing meal, to watch the game, to shoot some pool or to grab a drink. Their drink menu is extensive, and their two bars are literally filled to the brim with premium and

Alex’s Place in Port Richey is a one of a kind restaurant with delicious, home-style cooking and a great atmosphere with plenty of room for large parties well liquors. There’s a healthy wine list on every table and a drink menu that includes a chocolate martini I intend to go back and try. My experience also included hearing from my daughter that Alex’s Place had “The best fries EVER,” which from a fry connoisseur, should mean something to all of you. The thing about Alex’s Place is that you can come as you are. The food tastes great, Mom’s going to make you feel comfortable no matter what, and whatever life’s been throw-

ing at you, you’ll feel better with some good home-style cooking and one (or two) treats from the bar. Although there’s no children’s menu, Alex’s Place is family friendly especially during the day, and with multiple dining areas to choose from, guests can choose between having a nice quiet meal or having that sports bar experience. Specials run all week long, and I know I mentioned the Friday night prime rib, but I also have to mention that Tuesday is always 2-for-1 fajitas

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

starting at 5 p.m., and that Thursday has a rotating special between beef stroganoff, lasagna, urban steak and stir-fry. There is a special on Saturday night but “Mom” said it’s always different and to “call for a reservation.” If you’re looking for a nice place to have a party, Alex’s Place Restaurant and Bar offers plenty of room, the food is delicious, and “Mom” has an amazingly affordable catering and events menu that starts at just $15 per person and includes two hot meals, salad, fruit and dessert.

Already popular with locals, Alex’s Place is ready to welcome you and your friends into the fold, so call “Mom” and tell her you’re coming. Alex’s Place Restaurant & Bar is located at 7845 Grand Blvd. in Port Richey, Florida. They are open Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–12 a.m. To make a reservation, although you never need one, call 727-843-9690. Doctor of Chiropractic Degree and Bachelor of Science in Biology. In fall of 2011, Dr. Hacht opened her current location on Old County Road 54, but she’s been practicing in New Port Richey for over 20 years. Caring Chiropractic Services While I visited her office Dr. Hacht explained more about chiropractic to me. She says, “Chiropractic adjustment is the art of introducing a specific force in a precise direction applied to a vertebrae that is subluxated or out of place. But, apprehension about an adjustment causing some pain or discomfort sometimes keeps the person who can greatly benefit away.” Dr. Hacht’s background in massage therapy enables her to know how to work with her patients’ soft tissue through massage techniques while adjusting patients. Sometimes, without massage techniques, patients tense up in anticipation of their adjustment. This can make their muscles sore later. Her relaxing of trigger points before an adjustment has lead many of her patients to say she has “magic hands” or even “hands of gold.” A high-low table is another convenience for patients, which makes it easier for people to get off the table. A disc compression table helps with disc injuries, and onsite x-ray equipment allows patients to quickly get a diagnosis without having to go somewhere else to get x-rays. The crowd in attendance at LOKEY for the 2014 Clearwater Jazz Poster Unveiling enjoyed a great evening of food and entertainment While waiting for the poster unveiling guests were able to bid on silent auction items. All proceeds from the auction support Clearwater Jazz and the educational program they keep up year-round for students. Clearwater Jazz joins with the Pinellas Education Foundation to reward two promising student musicians with scholarships every year. These scholarships are made possible by the High Notes Society members and cherished sponsors who donate every year at Clearwater Jazz fundraisers. Clearwater Jazz sends a big thank you to these members, because “without them our programs for keeping a passion for music alive

would not be possible.” As a non-profit organization, Clearwater Jazz has fundraisers throughout the year to support their educational programs and jazz highlights. This year’s poster artist, Rick Hohimer (R.J.), designed the gorgeous piece of art with the intent to reflect the style of narrative expressionism. Hohimer’s brushstroke is influenced by French chemist Chevreul, who was an influence of George Seurat. Hohimer’s work is compared to creating an emotional energy with color brilliance and saturation through his juxtaposition of tones on canvas. His work is said to,

“envelop the viewer by creating alluring scenarios and inviting active participation in the story the artist has begun. The uniqueness of this art is that each time we look; we eagerly walk into his world.” Hohimer’s brilliance and intensity in his work emits energy similar to that of the famous works of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Emil Nolde. Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! Bring Life to Your Landscape – Plant Native! By Marcy Sanford For more than 25 years the Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society has been teaching gardening and nature enthusiasts how to bring color and beauty to their yards by using plants native to Florida. “One of my favorite native wildflowers is called Green Eyes,” says Nature Coast Chapter President Julie Wert. “It blooms year round, does really well in sandy, well-drained soil, and it smells like honey.” Julie says that there are many native trees and plants that will provide beautiful color for you year round, but you do have to do a bit of searching to find them. And that’s where the Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS) can help you out. They have plant sales twice a year where a wide range of native trees, vines, and wildflowers will be available. The next one will be October 18 at Harvester United Methodist Church at 2432 Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes. “We love our native plants,” says Nature Coast Chapter Vice Presi-

dent Jonnie Spitler. “We have learned that planting natives does bring life to the landscape.” Julie agrees, “There are many reasons to plant native plants. Because native plants are adapted to Florida’s weather conditions, they require less watering and so you will be conserving water. You will also need less fertilizer and you’ll find that the plants are easier to take care of. Also using native plants gives you a real sense of place in your landscaping. Much of the landscaping around the area looks like it could be anywhere but when you use native plants, you are representing Florida.” In addition to their very popular plant sales, the Nature Coast Chapter of the FNPS has monthly meetings and fieldtrips where you can learn more about a wide variety of gardening and nature topics. They meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center. “We bring in experts in their field,” says Julie. “Recently, archaeologist Barbara Hines talked to us about how native people used plants

every day. In September we’ll have a gardening program, and in October wildflower expert Walter Taylor will come speak to our group.” All Nature Coast Chapter meetings are open to the public. Julie says the best way to find out what programs are coming up is by going to their Facebook page (facebook.com/PascoNativePlants). The monthly field trips are also

open to the public. “We try to organize field trips that will be fun and informative for our members,” says Julie. “We have been to Withlacoochee State Forest for a guided hike with a ranger and a geologist. For July, we’re planning a trip to Honeymoon Island and in August we are going kayaking in the Hillsborough River State Park.”

“ECLA” Continued from page 1 the facility opened two years ago, so she truly has been able to see her original vision of ECLA to engage, enrich and empower come to life. The lead teachers that Erika initially hired, and the additional ones that have been added as the program grows, are still at ECLA. The staff is selected for educational background, experience and training, and all are background checked. Infants as young as six weeks can begin their care at Excel Creative Learning Academy, but with only eight children in the class with two teachers, there often is a waiting list for these coveted spots. Once children are in their toddler years, the staff works with parents as they see children are ready to move up to a class that is developmentally appropriate. The two-year-old class, called “Investigators,” has two teachers for 18 students, while the three-year-old “Voyagers” class has two teachers with a maximum of 20 students. Students in these classes, as well as the fouryear-old class, have the option to attend five days a week, three days

50

(Monday, Wednesday and Friday), or two days (Thursday and Friday). ECLA’s four-year-old class called “Innovators” is not a state VPK program, which Erika says allows for more flexibility for both parents and the students’ day. In this class students are often found learning in small group rotations, taking virtual field trips on the class SMART Board which engages visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners, and interacting with circle time activities. Erika explains, “There’s a focus on developmentally appropriate early literacy and math skills in our four-year-old class. Our

job is to get them ready for kindergarten.” Excel Creative Learning Academy believes developing and encouraging partnerships with families is an essential part of their success, and they are committed to children’s safety. One way they can quickly communicate with parents is through notes that are on the small computer touch screens that families use to check their child in and out, and can even run their credit card through for convenient paying. After signing your child in or out each day, you also use your fingerprint to

enter into the children’s area of the facility – an additional precaution on top of the buzz-in front entrance – to insure children’s safety. Erika and her assistant director have a digital feed of the halls and classrooms so they can video monitor the facility. Even students with peanut allergies can feel safe at Excel Creative Learning Academy, since they are 100% peanut free. Daily notes go home with children, which include sleep habits, what they ate, and other notes. Three and fouryear-olds take home learning packets that help keep parents aware of what

ganic lunches to be provided at an additional cost, and researching the possibilities. If you’d like more information about ECLA’s programs, call (727) 372-4977 or visit www.ExcelCreativeLearningAcademy.com. Excel Creative Learning Academy is located in the Medical Arts Building on the Medical Center of Trinity Campus at 9332 SR 54, Suite 204, and is open Mon. – Fri., 6:30 a.m.– 6:30 p.m., with an option of weekends and nights available based on demand.

sight words the children are working on, and it includes a little activity to be completed. ECLA wants parents to be involved and these types of family connections, homework, and daily notes help you feel like you understand your little one’s day while away from you. School-Age Programs Excel Creative Learning Academy has a growing before and after school program for children at Trinity Elementary School. Students take the school bus right from ECLA to Trinity Elementary, and in the afternoon from Trinity Elementary to ECLA. Erika explains, “We have very low ratios for our before and after program, so students receive personal attention, homework help, including through SMART Board technology, and benefit from our flexible hours of 6:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m., outside of the school day.” Except major holidays, ECLA is open when public school is closed, so they provide camps for school-aged children during winter, spring breaks, and summer. The last Saturday of every month ECLA holds a Parents’

Night Out from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. for children from the age of six weeks through 5th grade (11 years old). As an added convenience your child does not have to be enrolled in ECLA for Parents Night Out! Because ECLA is a 24/7 licensed facility they have night and weekend care available based upon demand. They are currently taking names on a waiting list for both, so if you are in need of weekend or nighttime care, be sure to call. Room to Play Outside Although ECLA’s 7,000-squarefoot facility is tucked away in the Medical Arts Building on the Medical Center of Trinity campus, they do still have a beautiful outside play area. One group of children use the playground at a time that will include a vegetable garden, herb garden and flowers in the fall of 2014. Even the younger children get outside time through stroller walks starting at six months old. Parent Sue Beane sums it up beautifully, “We could not have picked a better preschool experience for our son. The staff is caring, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Andrew is

more than ready for kindergarten thanks to the loving staff at Excel Creative Learning Academy.” During my visit at Excel Creative Learning Academy I noticed how the children were actively involved in age-appropriate activities, and were having a great time doing it! The facility was very clean and engaging, but also secure. It was also obvious that Erika and her staff make it a priority to listen to their families. Exploring Parks is a Great Way to Enjoy Florida Nature! By Marcy Sanford Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Whether you want to run, hike, bike, or prefer to relax while looking for birds, wildlife, or beautiful plants and flowers, our area has plenty of opportunities for you to explore the great outdoors. No matter what your interests, there is a good chance that Lake Park at 17302 N Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz will have something you’ll want to do. There is a large, fun playground with beautiful views of one of the parks five lakes. A gazebo, picnic tables, and covered areas provide the perfect place to relax while your kids play. In addition to lakes, the 589-acre Lake Park is home to cypress swamps, pine flat woods, and hardwood hammocks making it a sanctuary for birds and wildlife. If you want to get some exercise in a beautiful location, this is a great choice with its exercise trail and two-mile scenic hiking trail. If you prefer watersports or just

52

want to take in the view from the lakes, you can also rent canoes or kayaks. Lake Park also has primitive camping sites. In addition to these amenities Lake Park is home to an archery range, a BMX bicycle track, two equestrian arenas, and a radio-controlled car track, making it one very unique park. These facilities are open to the public except during races, events, and tournaments. With all of this to offer, Lake Park is the perfect combination of fun activities, excitement, and breathtaking beauty. Lake Rogers Park at 9010 North Mobley Road in Odessa has two fresh water lakes, pine flatwoods, and oak hammocks. The lakes on this 272-acre park provide foraging habitat for wading birds, bald eagles, and osprey. If you’re quiet and lucky, you might also spot raccoons, opossums, otters, or bunnies here. You can pack a lunch and enjoy a nice picnic at one of the many shelters or picnic tables inside the park. There is also a group campsite for overnight

stays. The 2.5mile dirt trail that circles around Lake Rogers is a scenic, meandering trek through a shady forest with frequent views of the lake. Along the way, there are signs that highlight information about some of the local plants or animals you might see. There is also a canoe launch for non-motorized boating and fishing and a nature trail that is an offshoot from the main trail. With more than 8,000 acres, you could visit the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve (10500 Wilderness Park Blvd, New Port Richey) many times and still not see everything the park has to offer. The park has an information kiosk, open space, camping area,

horse corral and equestrian trail, nature and paved multi-purpose trails, day use area, shelters and pavilions, playgrounds, and horseshoe and volleyball courts. You could spend days exploring all the trails inside the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve. The multi-purpose trail consists of 7.3 miles of paved surface for bike riding, rollerblading, jogging or walking and it connects to the 42-mile long Sun-

coast Trail. There is a 10-mile equestrian trail and 13 miles of hiking trails. More than 177 different species of birds have been spotted on the birding trail, which was designed by the Audubon Society. One unique feature at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park is the Solar System Walk. On this walk, you’ll find a series of signs, starting with a picture of the sun followed by pictures of the all the planets in our solar system. A short distance from the sun is the Mercury sign, then Venus, Earth and Mars – the inner planets. Each sign has a list of the planet’s distinctive features, as well as statistics like their mass, diameter and the distance and time it takes to orbit the sun. Although it is no longer considered a planet, Pluto was the last stop in the solar system for many generations. On this planetary hike, it lies a mile from the sun. “From the Sun to Pluto” can be found on the park’s bike path, near Parking Area 8, Shelter 5. The newest addition to the preserve will be especially appealing to bikers. At the end of June, Pasco County dedicated a new off-road bike trail, designed to showcase some of the park’s natural beauty. Members of

the South West Association of Mountain bike Peddlers (SWAMP) used hand tools and small pieces of heavy machinery to groom the trail and designed it to be in the shade. The first 7-mile section dubbed the Magnolia Trail is an access trail to the heart of what is anticipated to be a 35-mile trail system inside the park. The Magnolia Trail leaves from parking lot #10 and winds through pine uplands, old growth oaks, scrub oak, flat woods, wetlands, cypress domes, and a beautiful lily pond. If you’re just interested in a day outside, the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve has 7 shelters, 4 restroom buildings, and one large playground providing plenty of space for you and your whole family to enjoy a relaxing day outside. All of the parks have entry fees (usually $2) as well as additional fees for camping and renting shelters. The hours vary depending on the season. “Dr. Albert” Continued from page 1 orthodontic care affordable to all. We will miss our visits to his office. Dr. Albert Family Orthodontics comes highly recommended in this household.” While kids absolutely love Albert Family Orthodontics, it’s perfect for adults too. Casey Odell writes, “Teeth came out PERFECT! Love the results! I was a little nervous when I first made an appointment, seeing as how I am a little bit older, but I couldn’t be happier! The office is nice, clean, and modern. Staff and Dr Albert were super friendly, helpful, and ready to answer any questions and work with you. I will be recommending anyone and everyone that needs a perfect smile to come here!” Dr. Albert grew up locally and truly has become a leader in the community, where he now lives with his family. An alumnus of local East Lake High School, Dr. Albert now brings his services to the Pasco and Pinellas communities as a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. A graduate (with honors) of The University of Florida’s College of Dentistry, he also completed

54

his Orthodontic Residency, received his Orthodontics Certificate, and earned his Master’s of Science Degree from UF. This year, Dr. Albert was privileged to take part in two important outreach projects that provided free dental care to Floridians and abroad in Haiti. Mission Possible! Locally, Dr. Albert joined other dental professionals to provide free dental care to 1,660 people at the first Florida Mission of Mercy (FLAMOM) event, which was held at the Florida State Fairgrounds on March 28-29 of this year. Dr. Albert says, “With the help of over 1,400 volunteers, we provided 8,000 dental procedures equaling approximately $1.1 million dollars’ worth of free care.” When Pastor Douglas Poole of Cypress Meadows Community started planning a mission trip to Haiti, Dr. Albert stepped up to volunteer along with other members of his church, not really knowing what to expect. They went to an outskirt community on the northwestern coast of Haiti where people haven’t received much outside help due to the remote location. Dr. Albert explains, “It was a leap of faith. There

Dr. Albert feels priveleged to have been able to go and help people in Haiti and local people in need at the Florida Mission of Mercy event this year was no setup other than a chair, instruments and anesthetic, but we were still able to help a lot of people. I pulled 39 teeth; extractions are a great way to help people in those circumstances because it eliminates the pain and prevents infection.” Dr. Albert is thankful to the many local dentists who donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. “We had three large suitcases full of donated supplies from our generous local dentists. It is sad to say, but for a lot of the children there, they did not have their own toothbrush or any way to

clean their teeth. They were clutching those toothbrushes like the best gift you could imagine!” Dr. Albert is humble about the great success of Albert Family Orthodontics and is very appreciative of his patients and the community’s trust in him. So, he does his best to give back – both to his patients and the community. Brilliantly, he blends contests with community outreach, such as the recent Pet Palooza contest. “Our patients posted pictures of themselves with their pets and had a chance to win gift cards to PetSmart,

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

and for every picture posted, we donated $3 to the Humane Society. It was another way to get people engaged and a neat and fun way to give back to the community.” Once again this year, Albert Family Orthodontics held its “Making a Change” contest for local schools and was able to give $1,000 to Dayspring Academy, $250 to Seven Springs Middle School, and $250 to River Ridge Middle School. “I went to each school and met with the principals to give them the check personally,” shares Dr. Albert. “They had immediate needs and I was so

happy that we were able to help.” To decide the winners of the “Making a Change” contest, Albert Family Orthodontics lists all of the schools in the area that their patients go to on its facebook page, and people vote for their favorite school. The top three schools with the most likes are then entered into a random drawing for the top prize. Some of Dr. Albert’s contests are just to give back to his patients, like a recent contest that utilized the popular website Pinterest. “Re-Pin to Win” was super easy; all that was required to be in the running to win an Xbox One was to re-pin a graphic design provided by the Albert Family Orthodontics. The “Summer of Music and Smiles” contest, though, is a definite favorite of patients of all ages. This year’s concerts to win include four tickets to Luke Bryan’s September 6

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

concert and four tickets to One Direction on October 3. The “Summer of Music and Smiles” contest runs from July through August, and to enter, Albert Family Orthodontics’ patients just post a picture of themselves on facebook and have their friends vote for them to win. Community is important to Dr. Albert, who is a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of Trinity. Every year, Albert Family Orthodontics hosts a “Candy Buy Back” after Halloween, where sweets are donated to troops stationed overseas. Albert Family Orthodontics also participates in Toys for Tots through the Salvation Army every holiday season. Besides all the fun and games, Dr. Albert provides conveniences that many other offices don’t have, from self check-in options and free Wi-Fi, to freshly brewed Keurig Coffee and freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer choco-

late chip cookies. The wait is never long, and there is plenty of entertainment from the large flat-screen televisions to XBOX Kinect and iPad kiosks, loaded with the latest apps and movies. Patients and their families love Albert Family Orthodontics in Palm Harbor and Trinity! Albert Family Orthodontics is located in Trinity at Trinity Professional Place, 1806 Short Branch Drive, Suite #102, and in Palm Harbor at 2445 Tampa Road, Suite A. Your love for what you do will take you where ever you want. So dream big and kill your goals, and when you’re done with those, move on to the next. I’m excited to help you get there, so when you’re ready to commit, so I am. Lets do this!” A testament to their success, Boot Camp Madness Fitness has recently moved to a newer, bigger facility to better accommodate the growing number of clients. Their new location is 5910 Pine Hill Rd Suite 7 in New Port Richey. For more information please call (727) 859-6395 or email bootcampmadnessfitness@gmail.com.
