Cecil Pittman receives newspaper award

Banner Staff The Neepawa Banner Just over a hundred friends and well wishers gathered at Chicken Corral on Thursday, Apr. 21 in celebration of Cecil Pittman and his contributions to Neepawa’s newspaper history.

The surprise gathering was to celebrate Pittman’s 25

plus years of producing the weekly Looking Back feature in the Neepawa Press, as well as his receipt of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association’s (CCNA) Silver Quill Award. The Silver Quill recognizes individuals for 25 years of service to the newspaper industry and those who have made a distinguished contribution to the association. Pittman’s first Looking Back column was published on May 23, 1989 and has become a long time favourite of readers of the Press.

Pallister pumped with campaign success

By Ken Waddell The Neepawa Banner Fresh off his historic win in the April 19 Manitoba election, PC Manitoba leader Brian Pallister held a conference call press conference with rural media.

It was attended by about a dozen representatives from rural radio stations and newspapers.

Pallister was also coining some new words. A reporter asked him about the word “rurban” that Pallister had uttered. The premier-designate explained how rural MLAs got involved in the campaign in more urban centres like Dauphin, Brandon and Winnipeg. “We had strength in the rural areas and we used that strength to campaign in the urban centres, explained Pallister. “But I have a new word, it’s urbal. It’s when we have urban people go out and learn about rural issues and vice versa.” Pallister was very happy with how he was able to build a team across varying demographics in Manioba.

Asked about the west side Bi-Pole III hydro line, which is already under construction, and if he intended to stop construction, Pallister said, “Bi-Pole III was the dumbest project ever, anywhere. We have to get the real information instead of blacked out reports, which is what we have seen so far. We will do the best we can to stop it.”

During the campaign, Pallister promised there would be 1,200 new personal care home (PCH) beds constructed. Pallister was asked that given that there seems to be private investment money available in Russell, Boissevain and Morden to build a care home, if he was interested in private/public partnerships to construct care homes. Pallister said that under the former conservative government, there were 90 beds per year built, but under the NDP, only 20 per year. “The government can’t do it all. There are great partnership models available and we need to look at them to get the number of beds made available that are needed.”

Next week, Let No One Be Alone

By Kira Paterson The Neepawa Banner From May 1 to 7, Manitoba communities will be celebrating Let No One Be Alone (LNOBA) week. LNOBA is an initiative created in 2012 to raise awareness for people, especially seniors and those with disabilities, living alone.

The founder, Brenda Tonn, works in Plumas as the resource coordinator for Plumas Senior Support Services. She has seen the impact of loneliness in seniors and wanted to do something to help put an end to it.

During the week of awareness, communities host different events, such as barbeques, teas or concerts, and invite seniors and those who live alone to come out

and socialize. Tonn has organized a barbeque in Plumas for Monday, May 2.

In Neepawa, Home Assistance Neepawa and District (HAND) is the organization that puts on a LNOBA week event.

This year, HAND is celebrating their 30th anniversary the week after LNOBA week, so they will also do their LNOBA event that week. For the anniversary celebration, they will be having a luncheon at the Yellowhead Manor drop-in centre on Wednesday, May 11. In attendance will be HAND’s regular congregate meal program clients, as well as past and present HAND board members, Mayor Adrian de Groot and Tricia Hunter from the Prairie Mountain Regional Health Authority.

Then, on Friday, May 13, HAND will be having a congregate meal event for LNOBA. The meal will start at

11:30 and will also be in the drop-in centre dining area.

HAND began back in the mid-80s “out of a need to supply seniors and handicapped with resource information that would assist them to continue to live independently and with dignity in their own residences as long as possible,” stated an article from the January 16, 1986 edition of the Neepawa Press.

The organization lives out the LNOBA initiative all year by holding congregate meals for seniors every week, as well as organizing informational sessions and other events for seniors throughout the year. This year, some events include Arthritis Pain Busters Forum, patient safety day, Alzheimer Memory Walk, seniors protecting against fraud session, hearing information session and mature driver safety session.

Eden area author hopes to heal hearts

The author, Meredith Froese, wrote the book in hopes that it would bring healing to her own and others’ hearts. “God kept giving me hearts to write on,” Froese explained. She added, “it was a healing process for myself.”

Cut to grant puts VCC’s future in jeopardy

By Kate Jackman-Atkinson The Neepawa Banner For the Viscount Cultural Council (VCC), losing half of their annual grant from the Town of Neepawa came as a surprise. On April 19, the Town of Neepawa presented the first reading of their 2016-2017 budget, which included cuts to the grants distributed by the municipality to local organizations.

Kathleen Guillas, of the VCC, explained that last year, their grant was $10,000 and the year previous, it had been $12,000. This year, they will be receiving just $5,000. This money helps fund the operations of the Viscount Cultural Centre and Guillas says the loss of funding puts the centre’s future in jeopardy. “We

might not be able to be here,” she said.

Guillas said that the organization had asked that the town commit to a reliable level of funding, so the organization can know what numbers they are working with each year.

For now, the loss of funding will have an effect on the organization’s planned Jam Fest and market garden, two initiatives that were started last year in order to offer more summer activities to Neepawa and area residents after the loss of the Lily Festival. She said that these events, which don’t raise much money for the organization, might have to be put on hold.

For now, Guillas said that they are looking at ways of raising more money, or cutting expenses, which might include closing the centre for the summer.

heart that needs divine healing” and explains different spiritual “heart conditions” that people suffer from. She took 15 “heart conditions”, such as “The Heart That is Numb”, or “The Heart That is Shattered”, and she wrote an essay on each of them. There is a picture illustrating what each “heart condition” might look like, which were all drawn by Froese.

She started writing the book in January of 2013

and just finished it this March. She had friends and family help her in many ways, such as proofreading, typing out and scanning the illustrations and helping her send the manuscript to a publisher.

Her book is available at the Neepawa Banner and Neepawa Press Office, 243 Hamilton Street.

Froese is also working on a second book, which will focus on describing bible verses with pictures for those who are illiterate.

Death by a thousand cuts?

he resounding defeat of the Manitoba NDP on April 19 was a long time coming. They won elections in 1999, 2004, 2007 and 2011. By 2016, their luck ran out and to many in Manitoba, it was none too soon.

The NDP would never have won the 1999 election except for a combination of circumstances that worked in their favour. The PC government of the 1990s, led by Gary Filmon, had been in power for three elections. That in itself creates a mood for a change. But it was more than that, the 1990s had been a decade of financial restraint. Filmon had to hold the line on spending as the federal government had tightened their payments to the provinces. The federal budgets were balanced and so the province had two choices, slow down on spending or run bigger deficits.

Ironically, the federal spending restraint came from the pressure from the Reform Party in the 1980s, as Reform Party Leader Preston Manning spread his fiscal management message across the land. “Get your fiscal house in order!” trumpeted Manning and rightly so, in community hall after community hall. Prime Minister Jean Chretien realized an opportunity and rode that populist message. He moved to restrain spending and balance the budget. He did it well enough to win some elections over an opposition divided between Reform Party and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

So Filmon had fiscal restraint going against him in spite of the fact it was the right move. Then came regionalization of health care. Health care staff were transferred from local health authorities like local hospitals and care homes and placed under the employment of regional health authorities. Spotting a

Ken Waddell chance to create a wedge issue, the Manitoba Nurses Union and NDP leader Gary Doer spouted that, “The Tories fired a 1,000 nurses.” It was an outright lie, but it stuck. The PCs and the media let it stick for a decade and a half. Nurses were not fired. It took 15 years before two media types, namely Deveryn Ross and Richard Cloutier, really exposed the lie.

Then there was the 1995 vote rigging scandal, which was rather small in size, but nonetheless a serious breach of ethics by some very low ranking PC organizers.

It, along with the “fired nurses” lie, the fiscal restraint and the wish for change toppled the PC government.

The resulting NDP government, from 1999 to 2016, will go down in history as the worst government we have had in Manitoba.

It is rather sad as Doer was popular and smart. He could have led a government that had much more benefit for Manitoba.

The NDP promised to end hallway medicine, instead they created highway medicine and waiting room medicine. They ran up balanced budgets on fed payments and then ran up deficits. We still are short of investment in health care and education. All other departments have shrivelled in effectiveness, if not actual size.

The NDP govern badly because

they are founded on flawed basis. The NDP, like other parties, have local delegates attend and vote at their conventions.

Unlike other parties, one-third of the delegates are automatic delegates from the unions. That distorts the NDP philosophy in a very undemocratic fashion.

Party due to the union influence and a stubborn clinging to failed socialism, the NDP see tax dollars as good money, but private investment from individuals or corporations as bad money. They somehow resent any money that isn’t dug from the public purse. That blind reasoning is manifested in several ways. Communities or individuals aren’t allowed to build care homes, hospitals or health care facilities that might allow for more MRIs or CAT scans. It’s utter nonsense as, and students of history will tell you, that most of our hospitals were built with non-government money from churches, individuals or benevolent organizations.

The NDP rode a lie to power.

To the lie they added fear, to the fear they added some well placed and strategic bullying. In the end, the lie lost its sway, the fear lost its bite and the bullying lost its grip.

Now we have a new government with a large mandate to grow Manitoba and it’s none too soon.

hat’s $16,900 in a budget of more than $7.6 million?

Not much, not even one per cent. But for many Neepawa organizations, it’s a lot.

Lastweek,theTownofNeepawaunveileditspreliminarybudget and among the road repairs and transfers to reserve funds, were cuts to a number of grants distributed to local organizations.

In 2015, the Town gave out 22 grants totalling $133,795.95.

In 2016, the budget MY proposes PERSPECTIVE $116,895.95 in grants to 15 organizations.

S o m e ate of the cuts make sense. ackman tkinson For example, last year, the Town budgeted to spend $5,000 on the Land of Plenty Celebration, which didn’t end up being held and isn’t planned for this year. But most of the cuts were to organizations and events that continue to exist within the community. Most of the organizations have lost $200 here or $500 there, but some of the cuts have been significant. The Viscount Cultural Centre found their grant cut to $5,000, from $10,000. Last year’s grant of $10,000 represented a loss from the year before, when the Town’s grant totalled $12,000. The Neepawa Natives saw their operating grant of $5,000 gone.

The result has been a lot of angry citizens, especially those who volunteer with these organizations which are now suddenly finding themselves with holes in their budgets.

We can understand the need for reform. Neepawa’s mayor Adrian de Groot was quoted in last week’s Banner, saying “There was more than a perception, it was a bit of a reality where the requests were basically ‘You ask, we give’, in a sense. So, we started to change that last year.” De Groot also said that they looked at whether other communities fund or own certain types of facilities, in making their decisions.

There is a popular line of thinking, that municipal governments should repair the streets and provide water and pick up garbage and nothing else. There’s nothing wrong with that and in reality, the Town collecting taxes to then distribute money back to organizations isn’t the most efficient use of resources.

I can understand that the Town wants to get out of funding the ongoing operations of various organizations.

People can understand the logic behind the change.

Town council is well within their mandate to cut back on the grants they give, but more communication or a clearly communicated timeline could have saved a lot of ill will over a very small portion of the Town’s budget. Some groups felt blindsided by the cuts and that the Town didn’t do a good job communicating their priorities in grant distribution.

With the loss of the United Way in Neepawa, and nothing yet established to replace it, the grant cuts come at a hard time for many organizations that rely on donations to keep their doors open and their programs running.

Maybe council has a strategy when it comes to municipal grants, but if they do, it hasn’t been clearly communicated to applicants and the general public. Most of these grants fund operations, the organizations can’t just defer a purchase to make up for the short fall. But knowing that they had one year, or two years, or three years to find their own source of operating money, organizations could have planned and prepared.

I can understand the Town not wanting to pick and choose the winners, since even the 22 organizations that received funding represent only a portion of the groups operating within the town. But the the problem is, where do you draw the line? How do you develop an equitable system for all?

The Town appears to now more actively be choosing the winners and losers.

These organizations play a vital part in making Neepawa a vibrant town in which people want to live. Their continued success is the continued success of our community.

Cast off the clutter I n the world of motivational speakers, few can be as blunt as Tony Campolo. Several years ago, I was privileged to attend a conference for pastors and partners at which he was the guest speaker.

In one of his sessions, he addressed the western world’s preoccupation with “stuff”.

“When you first move out on your own,” he said, “you move into a small place with just your stuff.

But since the place looks empty, you add more stuff to fill it. Then you get married. Now the two of you have too much stuff for one small place, so you go out and buy a bigger place to hold all your stuff. Then you have kids, you need room for their stuff; so you buy an even bigger place to hold even more stuff.”

“But the time comes,” he continued, “when the kids leave home. But they don’t take their stuff with them. They get places of their own and fill them with new stuff. So now

Neil Strohschein you have a big house, two older people and a whole lot of old stuff, which you have to get rid of when you move into a smaller, retirement-type home.”

Campolo’s words apply to all areas of life—not just to the possessions we accumulate over the years. Every one of us can (and probably has) allowed our lives to become so cluttered with interests, obligations and activities that keep us from being the best we can be in our professions and doing our best in the work to which we have been called.

Nothing in life ever happens by accident. God has given you a job and has gifted you with the talents you need to excel in it. He has blessed you with a

family and has given you a home in a community specifically chosen for you. He has called you to do three things: be the best you can be at your job; love and care for your family; and be a cordial, helpful and caring neighbor.

Fulfilling those tasks will take most of our time and energy. We can’t afford to fill our lives with interests or activities that keep us from focusing on the three things God has called us to do.

But that doesn’t keep us from doing it. Holding membership and getting involved in one service club is a noble activity.

So is spending one night a week playing golf with your friends or enjoying a recreational hockey game.

The problem most of us have is that we don’t stop there.

We can get involved in so many different activities that before long, we are working 65 hours a week – 40 hours at our jobs and 25 hours in different community activities. And then we wonder why we fall asleep at our desks at work or have no energy to talk over serious issues at home with our partners and children.

Our lives have become so cluttered that we’ve lost sight of what God has called us to do – be good workers, look after our families and care for our neighbors.

There is only one solution for this problem. We have to cast off the clutter; stop doing the things that are robbing us of the time and energy we need to fulfill our divine calling. Then, using St. Paul’s words, (“Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”) we seek God’s help to keep what we have cast off from coming back and putting us in bondage again.

Too common traffic violations

he conversation around the multigenerational festive table was animated, from the foolish to the philosophical, punctuated with laughter and gentle personal poking. I came away thankful that I had been included, wonderfully full in body and spirit and with some thinking to do. One of the off hand comments carried a deep truth – ‘just because we are a small town doesn’t mean we don’t have to obey the rules!’

The topic had been on the traffic violations that are becoming too common.

Heck, I have been guilty of one or two of them myself.

In particular U-turns anywhere, any time and cutting across oncoming traffic to swing into a parking spot on the other side of the street! I see these violations all too often. And they are committed by young and old, male and female. Can

HOMEBODIES Rita Friesen we not circle the block and find a legal parking place, or, park on the opposite of the street to your destination and walk across? Oh, right, that may mean you have to walk half a block to cross at a designated crossing! Remember that exercise, even in moderate and modest amounts, is good for you.

And speeding. I know that coming up the hill into town on 16, if you drop to the required 50 kilometres per hour, it feels like you just might roll backwards.

It has been calculated, you won’t. It is safe to proceed at the legal speed. One possible explanation merits

he month of April is almost finished. We have had some beautiful, warm, sunny days and the snow has pretty well disappeared. The run-off could not be contained and roads were impassable in some rural areas. The frost is coming out of the ground and the back alleys in town have some heavy ruts and heaves.

However, we will not complain. Spring is here. Raking

deliberation. What if those exceeding the speed limit have their speedometers set to miles per hour, not kilometers per hour? Let’s say, for sake of an argument, that these travellers have returned from a trip stateside and forgot to readjust their settings?

Do the math, it looks like that just might be happening. Trust me, sitting and watching the traffic on 16 through town, there are some serious offenders.

What is 16? Two lane with a passing lane? Two lane with a turning lane?

Nope. It is a four lane from the junction of 5 and 16 on the east end of town to a

block west of the junction of 5 and 16 at the west end of town. Student drivers all know that, it is covered in the driving lessons. Again, to watch the traffic flowing through town, they may the only ones who understand those dynamics. Somebody comes barrelling up behind me on 16 travelling east, swings into the north lane, accelerates even more and slides back in front of me.

Really? We get to the lights at the same time...

Don’t get me wrong. I love our town, the people in our town, the way we watch out for each other, the way we rally for worthwhile causes, the way we disagree with each other.

That doesn’t mean we can’t improve. Not all those who violate the rules of the road are out of towners. If you need to review ‘how to drive’ I encourage you to drive with a new licensee beside you.

Letters Budget cuts hurt the arts I was quite surprised and frustrated that in their recent budget, the Town of Neepawa cut their level of funding for the Viscount Cultural Centre in half from $10,000 to $5,000. I can only imagine two reasons this cut was made. Either those on town council do not understand the role of arts in society or they don’t understand the role of the VCC. The Arts has many branches including visual arts, performing arts and literary arts. People are likely most aware of visual arts, as they probably have paintings, drawings, or sculptures in their homes.

Performing arts includes music, dance, and theatre as well as lesser known activities such as juggling.

The literary arts include those individuals who write poetry, novels and children’s books.

Training in the arts develops creativity, compassion, confidence and an appreciation of the world around us. It causes us to examine our values and beliefs, think critically and act responsibly. These are all qualities that are needed to survive and thrive in today’s world.

Do you think the arts are not important or don’t affect you? Think about the times you listen to music; in the car, while exercising, at a social, at church, or as background music on a movie or television program. Now imagine those things without music. Imagine your home without photos, paintings, or sculptures. Who designed your house, car, tractor or combine? A creative, artistic person.

Every program you watch on television has actors, designers, camera people and many other people with artistic abilities. Do your children read picture books? Someone had to write and illustrate those books. Everyone is constantly being affected by the arts.

Many people would likely be surprised to find that there are a number of very talented visual artists practicing their craft in the Neepawa area. As well, the Neepawa area is the home to a surprising number of talented singers, songwriters and musicians.

Those living in any community expect water, sewer, street cleaning and maintenance and garbage pickup. What makes a community more or less desirable is the “quality of life” a community can provide. A community with recreational facilities and opportunities for artistic and cultural experiences is a more desirable place to live.

The Viscount Cultural Centre is a place for persons of any age or level to learn to draw, paint, sing, play a musical instrument, dance and write.

Artists and musicians gather and are inspired to create, collaborate and challenge themselves. Their talents are showcased in exhibits and concerts.

The VCC also hosts a number of activities to support adults to achieve a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

You can participate in activities such as Zumba, Tai Chi and Yoga. The building is also used as a meeting place for service groups, birthday and anniversary parties and church groups.

What happens when artistic and cultural groups lose their funding from local, provincial, or national funding? They eventually no longer exist and the community becomes a less interesting and desirable place to live.

Maybe we are not looking forward to tomorrow, so let us enjoy today and give praise to God for His enduring love and care. Matthew 6:34 tells us very plainly “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” A reminder for each one of us.

Bigger Than That! tour comes to McCreary

By Jason Nadeau Turtle River School Division On April 12, Turtle River School Division hosted two-time Canadian Country Music Award nominated recording artist Ryan Laird with his “Bigger Than That!” tour.

Ryan presented to all of the division’s Kindergarten to Grade 8 students gathered in McCreary School on being able to rise above negativity and be a bigger person in any situation. The message for students focused on being able to share your feelings with trusted adults and by doing acts of kindness. His message was well received as there is a larger focus on student mental health and wellness being placed in education in this day and age. Division Superintendent Bev Szymesko stated, “It is important for students to be motivated and empowered to follow their dreams. Presentations such as Ryan’s communicate positive messages to

students through music in a powerful way to help support students that face bullying and adversity. We want to provide all students with the tools they need to be happy and achieve success.”

Strong finish to Anti-Bullying Week Submitted Turtle River School Division Turtle River School Division finished off a great week of activities and events in different schools strong with local country musician Jerry Sereda.

On Friday, April 15, Jerry Sereda capped off a week of events and activities that ran throughout Turtle River School Division by completing a marathon day of presentations and performances.

Jerry started the day in Alonsa at 9 am and then went to Glenella School for 11 am to present to both Glenella and McCreary School students. He then went raced over to Ste. Rose School to present to École Laurier and Ste. Rose School students at 1:45 pm.

The event coordinator, fellow teacher and principal, Jason Nadeau, commented by saying; “Whenever you can provide engaging and interactive presentations such as this to students, in the schools, it makes a difference. It shows students that we care and that they are important. It motivates them to stay in school, work

harder and do their best.”

Jerry’s presentation and performance consisted of speaking to students about important topics along with playing some related songs.

His stories were inspirational, regarding personal experiences of triumph and to never give up. Jerry spoke about cyber bullying and how tough it is for students to never give up.

Jerry Sereda is not only a Nashville Recording Artist, but he is also a teacher.

Jerry was locally raised in Ethelbert, Manitoba and understands the challenges of education in rural Manitoba.

Jerry did a fabulous job interacting with students and discussing important and difficult conversations. Jerry’s presentation capped off a busy week in Turtle River School Division. Schools all ran their own events during the week, with the division assisting schools with a presentation on Tuesday, April 12 from Ryan Laird’s “Bigger Than That!” tour, celebrating a “Day of Pink” on Wednesday, April 13 and then finishing the week strong on Friday, April 15 with Jerry Sereda.

They’re all 1.5 per cent screwed

ull disclosure; but when it comes to the Neepawa Town Council, this is my favourite time of the year and the reason why is quite simple.

Because this is the only time of the year in which people, other than myself and Jackie from NACTV, actually bother to pay any attention to Neepawa Town Council.

I can’t blame the average citizen for avoiding council meetings though. Truth be told, if I weren’t being paid to be there, I wouldn’t pay any attention to them either, because municipal politics is boring…98.5 per cent of the time. Fortunately though, we have just entered that 1.5 per cent sweet spot when things get interesting and all hell breaks loose.

If you are unaware of what I’m talking about, I’m referring to the reaction to the new municipal budget.

Eoin Devereux meeting on Tuesday, Apr. 19. For 2016, Neepawa Town Council has allocated $7,655,027.81 towards the general operating fund and $5,047,751.51 to the utility operating fund.

From the $7,655,027.81 general fund, $116,895.95 has been allocated specifically for grants to organizations. That’s just 1.5 per cent of the general funding pie. But trust me, this minuscule 1.5 per cent slice is going to cause 100 per cent of the yelling and finger pointing at the next meeting.

Now the problem lies in how that 1.5 per cent is being distributed. Some

groups, which have received grants in the past, will receive much less from the town this year and some others will receive nothing at all. For anyone who was paying attention, this redistribution of grant spending has been a long time coming. I predicted at around this time last year that the elimination of the previous ‘simply ask and you shall receive’ support structure was the ultimate end-game. That warning was not heeded. Nobody noticed what the council was doing, until they didn’t do it and by then, it was too late. So now, there are a few local organizations

Brandon will be Young at Heart

By Sheila Runions Publicity, 55 Plus Senior Provincial Games Brandon Rotary Club and James B. Chrisp United Commercial Travelers (UCT) have partnered to host the 34th annual 55 Plus Senior Provincial Games in their city. The competition will be held throughout Brandon for three days in mid-June.

These organizations have selected Young at Heart as the theme of their games.

Because both service organizations have blue as their primary “corporate” colour, that will be the colour promoted throughout the June 1416 competition. The title sponsor is Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MLL) so plenty of recognition will also be given this crown corporation.

A total of 23 different age-friendly sports will be played by more than 1,000 athletes. The Young at Heart volunteers will be easily spotted in their blue shirts with the MLL logo.

The 16 executive committee members will “sport” a slightly different shirt, to distinguish them as perhaps more knowledgeable than the everyday

volunteers who may be working at any number of the dozen venues in and around the city.

The games is the largest multi-sport event for Manitoba’s older adults. Registration is already open; it closes on May 13 (May 20 for slo-pitch). There is a fee associated to playing in the games, which varies on the sport and the number of events each athlete will enter during the three-day competition. Anyone who is 55 years of age by Dec. 31 this year is eligible to compete in any event except contract bridge, cribbage and whist. These three card games are so popular that regional playoffs are held to determine winners who are eligible to qualify for the provincial 55 Plus games. There are 14 regions in Manitoba and qualifier rounds conclude the end of April so players are able to now begin making their travel plans.

wondering how the heck they can make up that budget difference.

On the other side of this equation, I’m sure our mayor and members of council have been receiving an earful from these few select groups over the past few days. Lost in all this is a mostly positive multi-million dollar budget, that gets some extremely long overdue projects moving ahead. It also doesn’t pass the majority of those added costs to the average taxpayers.

In essence, all that good work is being completely overshadowed by just 1.5 per cent of the pie.

So now, we wait for the next meeting, in which people will complain, council will explain and nothing will change. Then you can go back to the status quo, of not paying attention to the level of government that impacts 98.5 per cent of your life.

Mushroom lemon salad Early Romans referred to mushrooms as the “food of the gods.” Mushrooms contain more potassium than most other fruits and vegetables: one medium brown mushroom generally contains more potassium than a banana. Mushrooms are one of the richest, natural sources of selenium, an essential mineral which strengthens the immune system and may help reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses. The stem of a mushroom is a good source of flavour and nutrients so there is no need to remove it. If, on occasion, you do need to remove the stem, chop it and add to casseroles, soups and sauces. Mushrooms are best stored unwashed in brown paper bags in the refrigerator, preferably on the lowest shelf. I love fresh mushrooms in salad, which today’s recipe features.

Mushroom lemon salad 2 Tbsp. finely chopped 1/4 cup lemon juice chives or green onion 1/4 cup olive oil 1 package of fresh mush1 garlic clove, crushed rooms, washed and sliced 1 Tbsp. liquid honey 2 tsp. Litehouse Italian 1 head of lettuce or equivalent mixed salad greens herb blend 1/4 tsp. black pepper Mix the lemon juice, oil, garlic, honey, herbs, pepper and chives. Pour over mushrooms and let marinate in the fridge for one to two hours. Drain mushrooms, keep the liquid and toss mushrooms with the lettuce.

Add enough of the marinade to lightly coat the lettuce.

Serve immediately.

Springing into fashion On Thursday, April 21, Unforgettable Gifts of McCreary hosted a ladies’ night to promote their new clothing lines.

The business shares space with Reischek’s Pharmacy and owner/ pharmacist, Darko Reischek said this annual event entitled, “Spring Fling” has been organized since 2009. Staff commented that the use of promotional flyers inserted in the Banner was very effective. Over 60 people visited the business that evening and fashion sales were popular on Friday and Saturday too.

McCreary goes Mediterranean Submitted The Neepawa Banner Nearly two years ago, a group of students, parents and school staff gathered together in McCreary School to discussed potential destinations for their second community trip. The choice that was made proved to exceed the expectations of all of those who went on the trip.

An excited group of 15, including students, educators and adults, signed up for a trip of a lifetime to various destinations in Italy and Greece. The group consisted of eight students; Gina Musgrave, Bradley Mozdzen, Taryn Buchannan, Lauryn Dunning, Lyndsey Dunning, Kaitlyn Szewczyk, Blaine Oshawee and Caleb Rudkewich; two educational chaperones, Byron Billett and Donna Duggan; and five adults, Nancy Buchannan, Trudi Musgrave, Becky Rudkewich, Tina Szewczyk and Lee Dunning. The EF Education First trip to Italy and Greece was an excellent choice, as the club was fortunate to join another Manitoba group from Roblin and travel across various landscapes in southern Europe. The group enjoyed various experiences, from swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, to the enjoying hot chocolate in the Greek mountain town of Metsovo, to driving through the vineyards of Tuscany. The group was provided meals of local cuisine, hotels, airfare, ferry service across the sea and a full time tour guide, as well as local experts as we visited a variety of different tourist attractions.

Throughout the year, the group participated in various fundraisers to help fund their trip. The group had cash raffles, NHL drafts, numerous bottle drives, sold paraphernalia for Manitoba Hydro at the community Christmas parades, held a Dance-aThon, collected donated items for a Canada Day fundraising auction, participated in perogy fundraisers, prepared food for Turtle River School Division in-service and McCreary’s Maple festival, organized a weekly lunch program for students to purchase and participated in various other enterprises throughout the year. The group met many times throughout the year to discuss the various things that were

After the long wait, McCreary Travel Club could not have chosen better places than Italy and Greece to enjoy favourable weather with temperatures that reached as high as 25°C in Rome. The places that we explored in Italy and Greece not only provided our club the opportunity to experience some of the most historic sites in the world, it provided an opportunity for members to immerse themselves in the local cuisine, culture and customs.

The trip was not limited to a few places in each country; it was quite intensive, leaving numerous experiences for the group to reflect upon. The club started in Athens, taking a guided tour of the countless sites. Notable places that were visited in Athens included the Parthenon on the top of the Athenian Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and the Plaka district. Capping off the time in Athens was an action packed night of dancing and eating during a Greek evening event. The next major stop was Delphi, where the group walked the awe inspiring Temple of Apollo. The club then hopped on a bus and drove to the Meteora region, experiencing the community of Kalabaka before visiting

Meteora Monastery. Next was a trip through the Greek mountains, stopping in mountain villages to stretch our legs and enjoy time to explore before boarding a night ferry

and travelling across the Adriatic and Ionic seas to Italy. While in Italy, the club first travelled to Florence, climbing the steps of the Giotto's Campanile Tower and visiting various land-

marks of the Renaissance era, including the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Chiesa di Santa Croce and the Gates of Paradise. The group also had an unexpected perk to

the trip as our tour guide, Jason Healan, provided us with an opportunity to visit the Tower of Pisa before the day was complete. The last place that the group was able to visit in the trip was Rome and Vatican City. During the first day at Rome, the group visited the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Altare della Patria, along with various other sites in the city. The second day in Rome had the group visit Vatican City, where they experienced the marvel of the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. On the third day, before heading back to Manitoba, the group visited countless markets, the Trevi fountain, restaurants and numerous other tourist sites.

The group experienced 10 action packed days that they will be able to remember their entire lives.

Students gained meaningful experiences, independence and confidence, while learning and interacting with the people, architecture and landscape of two beautiful countries. The group is now working to compile pictures and videos of various highlights of the tour to share with the students and staff of McCreary School, hoping to inspire future travelers.

‘Something I’ll remember for the rest of my life’

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner Earlier this week, Neepawa was a quick rest stop for a fascinating journey of self discovery and the search for what it is to be Canadian. Sarah McCauley of Toronto, along with her traveling companion Dan Nicksy, arrived in town as they continued their cross-Canada walk.

For McCauley, this trek began in Apr. 2014, when she and her friend Oskar Nowicki decided to walk from Inuvik, NWT, to St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. McCauley said part of the reason for this journey was to scratch their itch for adventure.

“When this idea come about, I had just gotten out of trade school and I had started working full time and it was my first ‘real world’ job, I guess.

And then I had this realization, ‘Oh my God, this is my life now. I’m going to wake up and I’m going to be 40. Where did my life go.’ I called it my quarterlife crisis. I’m 26 [years old] and I just figured you have to do something cool before you die. I had never really ever been anywhere or had much chance to do much travelling, so

I thought why not start with Canada. It’s huge, it’s beautiful,” said McCauley.

Instead of the standard west-to-east coast trip, the pair decided to do something different and start at the edge of Canada’s arctic. From April to October, they were able to get from Inuvik, NWT, to Regina, a distance of almost 4,000 kilometres. With colder weather quickly approaching, the pair decided to spend the winter in Edmonton and work there in preparation for the next stage of the journey.

Unfortunately, Oskar was unable to continue the walk and the endeavour had to take a one year hiatus. On Apr. 1, 2016, Sarah was able to set off on the road once again, this time with a new counterpart, her friend Dan Nicksy. Brand new to the adventure, Nicksy said he’s enjoyed the experience so far.

“It’s been great. I was looking forward to meeting a lot of nice people and I was blown away by the number of friendly people that we’ve already encountered. You tell people that you’re doing something like this they are spectacularly friendly.

It’s also been nice to see a different pace of life,”

noted Nicksy. “I think the most exciting part for me is that an adventure of this magnitude is not just a break from normal, it becomes your new normal.

I’m excited for the adventures we’ll have.”

For Sarah, she noted that the opportunity to travel like this has allowed her to see many different versions of our nation.

“For so long, my little bubble was Toronto. Travelling through the arctic, the mountains and the prairies has allowed me to see just how different we Canadians live. We’re all Canadian, but the definition of the Canadian life is different for each of us. There are certain things that are universal.

Everyone is friendly and it’s been really nice to see first hand,” stressed McCauley. “To take the chance and explore the country first-hand and experience things we’ve only ever heard about or seen in books or on television has been phenomenal and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Tigers varsity baseball and fast-pitch teams have each started the Zone Seven regular seasons with victories on Tuesday, Apr. 26, though they earned those W’s in very different ways. The girls team cruised to a comfortable 16-5 win over the William Morton (Gladstone) Warriors, while the boy’s side had to sweat out a dramatic 12-11 come from behind victory over the Warriors.

Fast-pitch assistant coach Trent Joye said overall, the girl’s squad played a very well-rounded opening game.

“There was lots of hitting, they got off to a strong start there. The girls were able to get on base and then able to advance the runners consistently,” said Joye. “The pitching was solid throughout and our fielding progressed as the game went on. We still have to work on our communication out there in the

field, but for the first game of the year, [the coaching staff was] pleased with how they were able to start the season.”

In the boy’s game, the Tigers scored three runs in the final inning to take the win. Coach Mike Krutkewich said he was very impressed with the team’s resolve, especially considering that there are many first year players on the club.

“There was some clutch hitting at the plate. It was great to see that, especially since there are, I believe about seven players, who haven’t played organized ball before.” noted Krutkewich. “So, there is a bit of a learning curve out there. But, you know, we had a little bit of luck on our side and the players were focused. They played smart out there.”

Krutkewich added that while the team will work on a few fielding and situational issues in practice, before their next game, overall he was happy with the performance of

everyone.

The next game for the baseball team is on Monday, May 2. The Tigers will face the MacGregor Mustangs at 5:30 pm at the

Beautiful Plains Ag Society Fairgrounds. The girl’s fast-pitch team meanwhile, will play its next game in Carberry on Thursday, May 5.

The faithful fans of the Neepawa Natives came out en masse to meet the team’s new head coach. The Junior ‘A’ club hosted a meet and greet with Dustin Howden on Tuesday, Apr. 26 at Chicken Corral. A large number of season ticket holders came out to speak with the new bench boss and get an update on the preparations for the 2016-2017 MJHL season.

Howden, who served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons, said it was very nice to meet with the public in this manner.

“It’s been a great night. We’re a small community, but extremely close knit. The community support is what ensures [the organization] functions.

Without the people, [the team] wouldn’t be around.

Overwhelmed with the support. I’ve received a lot of phone calls and texts from around the community, so I’ve felted very welcomed,” said Howden.

Neepawa Natives team president Ken Waddell said the executive board was very happy with the response to the meet and greet. He said seeing so many people come out to show their support for Howden and for the team in general, was a welcome sight.

Rivers rodeo athlete has cousins, alumni to thank for involvement Bridgeman family bidding goodbye to high school rodeo this summer

By Darrell Nesbitt Submitted Like it or not, the rodeo lifestyle has been etched in the mind and soul of a Rivers grade 12 student for quite some time, thanks to cousins’ involvement prior to his sister joining the Junior Division of the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA) when that youngster was seven.

Sitting or standing along the rail of steel panels – sunshine or rain – Beau Bridgeman waited for his turn to compete, watching sister Halee and brother Logan, and now he is among the top high school athletes competing.

“I’m currently in my last year of high school rodeo.

I have been in the MHSRA since grade 6, a total of seven years,” said Bridgeman. “Three years in the junior ranks and four years in the high school division, learning as I kept climbing the ladder one boot at a time.”

From being involved in the MHSRA, which was initiated in Manitoba back in 1995, the son of Kelly and Myra Bridgeman of Rivers feels it has provided great opportunities to make new friends, has kept him active, provided scholarships for his future and has given him the motivation to do something he cherishes.

Competing in the timed events of tie down roping, steer wrestling and team roping, Bridgeman likes all his events, but if he had to pick one as a favourite, it would be tie down (calf) roping. He said it takes many things to work together in posting an awesome run and it’s richness when it does.

“Rodeo is a sport that instills teamwork, sportsmanship, tenacity and hard

work for success,” stated Bridgeman, who does lots of riding and roping throughout the winter to keep the skills up. Other sports Bridgeman is involved in include curling, for the past three years in the Brandon Jr. Super League, local men’s league and this year winning silver at the High School Provincials.

Going above and beyond for every high school rodeo competitor, parents are fully involved and it’s been no different for the Bridgeman clan over the years. True, a hearty chunk of change is required for entries, clinics and practice time, but assistance and commitment goes far deeper.

“My parents are involved, like many other parents, by helping with the various jobs and committees it takes to run a high school rodeo, with Rapid City considered as my hometown rodeo,” stressed Bridgeman. “My dad has been an event director, and has also acted as MHSRA vice-president and a director. Mom has been active on the scholarship committee – acquiring and distributing – plus

Manitoba heroes When he was asked “Who is your favourite rodeo competitor – local or national”, it was not one professional cowboy but two who rose through the ranks of the MHSRA and College down south one eight second ride at a time.

The Larsen brothers of Inglis – Orin (bareback) and Tyrel (saddle bronc) – were penciled in. Bridgeman said cheering on some of our own at this level is pretty darn exciting. Other Manitobans have gone on to Canadian or U.S. colleges, achieving degrees and now are employed, married with family or back on the farm.

Like the Larsens, and hundreds of others, Bridgeman has attended the Canadian Finals over the past two years, and will be gunning for a third trip this summer. “At Nanton, AB in 2014, I team roped with Cassidy Gardiner of Lenore and last year, partnered up with Clay Bergeson of Onanole.”

While his cousin Kristy Bridgeman Gilchrist now lives in Saskatchewan, she along with fellow cousin Justin Bridgeman of Bin-

scarth, and other MHSRA alumni including Justin Miller of Neepawa, and Devon Porter of Solsgirth, all have played an important role in the development of his rodeo skills.

Other cousins involved in the MHSRA have been Karalyn Bridgeman Main of Russell, Kassidy Bridgeman of Calgary, and Kelsey Lane and Kacee Gee, both of Virden, which lends the possibility of another generation of Bridgeman bloodlines to be enriched by rodeo.

Wheatland Zone Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Spring Renewal Submitted The Wheatland Zone LWML On Saturday, April 23, 2016 the Wheatland Zone Spring Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Renewal was held at Zion Lutheran Church in Plumas, Manitoba. Registration was from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Rev. James Vosper did the opening devotion centered on the theme for the renewal: “How great is the love of the Father.” 1 John 3:3.

Lunch followed the Bible study. A delicious lunch was served by the Plumas ladies and a couple Neepawa ladies contributed the salads and Brandon brought some wonderful desserts.

Highlights of the business meeting: Bernice LaBuick, president of the Wheatland Zone, called the meeting to order. This was followed by the words of welcome to the renewal

by Irma Lach, president of the Plumas Society. Bernice Walker gave the registration report. There were two ladies from Brandon, six from Neepawa and McCreary, six from Plumas and two pastors: Rev. Alvin Borchardt, Neepawa, and Rev. James Vosper, Plumas.

Secretary Judy Gabler read the minutes of the last Spring Renewal, which were approved. The treasurer’s report was approved as pre-circulated. The societies’ reports were printed booklets, listing their activities completed over the year.

The zone pastoral councilor’s report was presented by Rev. Alvin Borchardt, but disappointment was expressed by the assembly as Rev. Borchardt feels it necessary to step

members and friends of all the congregations in the zone. Everyone was asked to move upstairs for a picture of the 48 quilts, which were made by the Plumas ladies, and the finished bears, which will be sent to Lutheran World Relief. The renewal theme,

“how great is the love of the Father”, was evident in the efforts of the ladies who gave of their time and effort to fulfill this project.

It was a wonderful day and we thank the Lord for the hands that helped to make the day so beneficial.

Marie Eleanor Watts Marie Eleanor Watts passed away February 8th, 2016 in Carberry Hospital with her family by her side at the age of 88.

Mom was born July 24th, 1927, the youngest of three to George and Ellen Froom.

She married Dad on November 3rd, 1945 when they began farming, raising cattle and growing registered seed. Dad passed away on February 5th, 2003 at their Weslaco, Texas residence.

She is survived by: daughters Lynn Watts (Bryan) McCutchin, Carol Ann (Malcolm) McDonald; son, John (Pat) Watts; six grandchildren, Annette (Steve) Enns, Marcy McDonald (Jeff) Strain, Nicole McDonald, Michelle (Jon) Draper, Clinton Watts and Sean Watts (Charlene); seven great grandchildren, Jesse, Ashley and Cody, Taylor and Tyler, Will and Wyatt; one great great grandchild, Brody; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Birss and Laura Levandosky; and many “special” nephews and nieces.

Mom and Dad enjoyed 27 years in Texas where shuffleboard became their favorite pastime. Mom spent 4 more winters in Texas when she sold her mobile and remained in Carberry. She then sold her mobile in Carberry and moved to her new residence at Lyons Estates on June 29th, 2008. Her stay here was very enjoyable – people to visit, coffee parties on Wednesday mornings and the many supper get togethers in the common room throughout the year. A “special” thank you to Doreen and Helen for being such great friends.

Mom thought you were very “special”. She went every Wednesday to the Drop – In Centre and again enjoyed the company of all her friends.

Mom was a special and very determined lady and her family meant the world to her.

Thank you to the Home Care ladies who visited on a daily basis, the Staff at Brandon Health Centre and Carberry Hospital for your excellent care of Mom. It was greatly appreciated.

A graveside service will be held on May 7th, 2016 at 2 o'clock at Carberry Plains Cemetery after which lunch will be served at the United Church hall by the Presbyterian Ladies.

You must possess a Degree in Agriculture, Commerce, or Business Administration and several years’ related experience with emphasis on agricultural finance and farm business management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A thorough knowledge of farm production systems, general agricultural practices and farm business management are required. Demonstrated effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to enable you to deal effectively with agricultural producers and financial institutions, and working in a team environment are essential. Also required are demonstrated analytical, problemsolving, decision-making, negotiating, organizational and multi-tasking skills as well as attention to detail. Proficiency with computers is required. Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel is also required. Lending experience and knowledge of farm property valuations is desirable.

Looking back over the years, Bridgeman feels the friendships and connections that the MHSRA allows is very special and has an impact on a youth or teenager’s life. By competing against them and in the end having fun with them, has blossomed into true life-long friends that will continue to be a vital part of his future too.

Finding the MHSRA to be ‘cowboy strong’, should one be thinking of joining, Bridgeman shares that one has to be very committed and it takes more than simply saddling up a horse and competing in one, two, three events. One needs the drive and determination to succeed, and Bridgeman is very thankful for the ups and downs he has faced as a competitor.

In saying that, Bridgeman has found a cowboy is simply a man or woman with guts and a horse.
