There was lots to do and see in Neepawa last Saturday. During the day of Nov. 28, there was the cookie walk and pictures with Santa at the Viscount Cultural Centre and the Glorious Christmas Wish sale at the Yellowhead Centre. There was tremendous support from those who attended events during the Parade weekend. VCC’s Rrain Prior commented on the Cookie Walk saying, “We opened at 10 am and by 11, had sold out! Over 800 attended the Christmas Wish Sale - our best yet. Vendor feedback was very positive. They were extremely pleased.”

Jennifer and Kevin Enns provided photos with Santa at the VCC. Jennifer said, “Santa was a few minutes late for the portraits. By the time he arrived the room was full. Eighty-four families were involved with over 160 individuals taking part.”

By Kira Paterson The Neepawa Banner On Tuesday, Nov. 24 and Thursday, Nov. 26, Spruce Plains RCMP officer Jason Gurevitch and a few Neepawa Natives hockey players visited Kindergarten to Grade 3 classes at Hazel M. Kellington School to talk about bullying. The presentations included reading a Berenstain Bears book about teasing to the kids and having class discussions. Following the reading, Gurevitch asked the classes what they thought of it. He also asked questions to get them to figure out what bullying looks like, how to stop bullying and what they can do if they’re being bullied.

On Dec. 3, Gurevitch and the Neepawa Natives had two more presentations to do for a Kindergarten and Grade 2 class, then they did presentations for the Grade 5 classes about emotional health. There were class discussions generated to help the kids understand what emotional health and well-being is.

Gurevitch introduced the students to the Kids Help Phone’s website and showed them how to use it. He also got the classes to come up with questions to ask a worker at Kids Help Phone and made a call with the classed so they could ask the questions. The classes discussed how they can stay emotionally healthy and how to manage stress and anxiety.

Amero Christmas comes to Neepawa

On Nov. 26, Don Amero delighted the audience with his Christmas show, Amero Little Christmas. The concert was hosted by the Viscount Cultural Centre in Neepawa.

Seasonal favourites available at Library Submitted Neepawa Public Library December has arrived and even though it doesn’t appear to be winter when we look out the windows, we’re quickly reminded everywhere we go that Christmas celebrations are well underway. We have a good selection of seasonal children’s books, adult fiction, recipe and craft books as well as a few seasonal favourite DVDs for lending. They’ll be available until early January before

we pack them away again for next year.

December also means that Storytime is over for the year. It wouldn’t be as fun or as successful without the participation of our volunteers who do such a terrific job of reading to the young ones, and we thank Wendy and our readers from the Rotary Club once again.

The Neepawa Natives Pen-pal Club will be meeting one more time this month and there’s still room at the table for

anyone who would like to join in. Give us a call at the library for more information.

This is also a time of mixed emotions at the library because long-time staff member Loraleigh Epp will be leaving us for a new adventure. The Epp family has been lured away to British Columbia and although we are sad to see them go, we also wish Loraleigh, Jason and their family all the best in the next chapter of their lives.

Langruth drops the pop Submitted Kidney Foundation- Manitoba On Nov. 19, The Kidney Foundation of Canada – Manitoba Branch announced it has chosen eight elementary schools from across Manitoba to receive its second annual $250 grant that will help the schools carry out a Drop the Pop Challenge for their students.

Elementary schools with a significant Aboriginal student population were invited to apply for this grant. Twenty-five schools from across the province applied and Langruth Elementary School was chosen as one of the recipients.

Schools were selected based on providing concrete plans on how they would promote health to their students.

“What an awesome program! This will certainly help our students learn about diabetes and the other health-related issues with sugary drinks,” said Langruth Elementary principal Tim Klein.

A common problem It’s a strictly mathematical problem

T

here is a common problem across Manitoba and that problem is all municipal governments, regardless of size, are stretched way too thin. It doesn’t matter if it’s the smallest, most rural RM in Manitoba or the City of Winnipeg. It’s a strictly mathematical problem.

There isn’t enough money to do the work that people need and definitely not enough money to do what people want. Basic municipal needs are being left aside, and have been for decades, because there isn’t enough money.

Many politicians have hung their star on the provincial Christmas tree by saying all would be well if one per cent of the PST was dedicated to municipal work. No doubt that would help but, it’s still an increase in taxes. One per cent doesn’t sound like much, but it’s still an increase in taxes.

The problem runs deeper than just not having enough money. The problem is one of efficiency. RMs, towns and cities are required to provide services to the residents. Basic things like water, sewer, roads, fire protection and policing. Then other stuff gets added on like recreational services, such as arenas, curling rinks , pools, skateboard parks etc. The problem is always too much cost for the available money to cover. It’s the same problem that faces many businesses and most farms.

Farms are covering too many acres for the return on time and investment. RMs are extended too far, with too many miles of roads. The City of Winnipeg, as has been eloquently pointed out, is spread way too thin as urban sprawl extends the city in every direction. The huge amount of

non-resident land in the middle known as the rail yards and all the parking lots all over the city vividly shows Winnipeg is a city spread too thin for its available tax base.

So, in a nutshell, everybody has the same problem, too big a footprint, not enough density.

The obvious answer is to intensify the footprint. Cities don’t need to get more acreage, neither do farms. The solution is to diversify and intensify. It can take many forms.

Some farms, a few, can pursue eco-tourism. Some farms, most farms, could pursue intensified production and processing. RMs could limit new road construction and may have to make some tough decisions about abandoning certain roads.

RMs should make it feasible for every rural yard site to become a residential small holding. More people in a smaller space means more efficient use of tax dollars and services. Winnipeg’s rail yard

problem is a perfect example. The city should be densifying, not spreading. It will cost a fortune to move and make the rail yards more efficient, but what’s the cost of not doing it? The rail yards should be moved to the northwest of the city, adjacent to and in conjunction with the airport and all the hub transportation efforts that are taking place there.

Some inner city companies are still dependent on the rails to get their raw product in and their processed product out. There are lots of problems but they have to be addressed. Spreading out of farms to encompass more and more acres may have reached its efficiency limits. The spreading of cities is a problem that has been recognized for a long time.

If cities, towns, villages and RMs are going to survive, there will have to be some very creative changes. If that doesn’t happen, municipalities of all sizes will be faced with stagnation, some will face extinction.

mployees are a vital asset, but finding qualified employees is a challenge faced by many Canadian businesses. For a great number, it’s the single largest challenge they face.

In a 2014 survey, 38 per cent of Canadian small business owners said that finding qualified employees would be their biggest challenge in 2015. For them, staffing was a bigger challenge than getting new customers (34 per cent), increased competition (20 per cent), government reguMY lations (16 per PERSPECTIVE cent) or taxes (15 per cent).

The business owners also reported ate that their major focus for ackman tkinson 2015 would be hiring new employees. This priority tied with cutting expenses to take the top spot. Most weeks, this truth can be seen in the help wanted section of the paper.

Given the issue’s importance, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) monitors this challenge. They recently released their latest Help Wanted report, which looks at job vacancies across the country. The most recent report found that approximately 326,600 full time, part time and temporary positions remain unfilled across the country due to a lack of qualified candidates. This number accounts for 2.6 per cent of all jobs in Canada. In Manitoba, the vacancy rate fell slightly to 2.5 per cent, representing 10,400 unfilled positions. The rate has been more or less holding steady in this province.

Industry also plays a factor in vacancies. In the Help Wanted study, service sector vacancy rates rose modestly, while goods producers have seen a decline. Vacancies in micro businesses, those with one to four employees, were more than double those in large enterprises, those with 500 or more employees.

This pressure isn’t expected to ease up. In June 24, 2014, Canadian Business published a report titled “Why hiring the right employee is about to get even harder”. The article pointed to a shrinking workforce. Stats Canada reports that over the next decade, the number of people entering the workforce (aged 15 to 24) will drop below the number of people exiting the workforce (aged 55 to 64). The most optimistic outlook points to a return of one new worker for every retiree in the late 2020s. The ratio of people entering the workforce to those leaving has been on a steady decline, with a couple of peaks, since 1931.

These realities combine with other challenges faced by rural businesses. Not only do they have a smaller pool of prospective employees from which to draw, but they also face additional challenges when it comes to recruiting employees from outside the community.

Despite these challenges, meeting staffing needs is vital to the success of rural areas. Properly staffed companies provide employment to residents and economic well-being to communities.

Addressing this challenge will require a multi-faceted approach.

Businesses are struggling to find qualified employees and this problem can be addressed in a variety of ways. For some businesses, it will require higher level initiatives to interest people in pre-employment training or education in a certain field. For example, it might require talking to high school students about a particular industry or profession. For some businesses, it will require investing in new employees through in-house training.

For some business owners, addressing the challenge will require more formal or informal education about human resources.

Most small business owners aren’t experts at HR functions and may struggle to know in which areas they can compromise from their ideal candidate. They may not yet be skilled at developing pipelines to attract talent or recognizing potential.

For some businesses, the problem can’t be solved and it will mean doing more with less by changing processes, improving efficiency or missing out on growth opportunities.

For rural communities, addressing this challenge will take a village. It will require a concerted effort at marketing the community as place in which people want to re-locate, and more importantly, stay.

Celebrate Jesus – God’s great gift to you

he first Sunday of Advent falls on a different day each year. Some years it’s the first Sunday of December.

Some years, like this year, it fell on the last Sunday in November.

The actual date may be different, but what happens on that day is always the same. Advent 1 is New Year’s Day for the church.

Advent 1 takes us back to the beginning of our story—to the event that ushered in a new era of God’s dealings with humanity.

During Advent, we look at the ways God prepared the world for the most significant birth date in human history—the birth date of his only begotten Son, which we celebrate at Christmas.

Like all holidays with a religious significance, Christmas has its detractors. Some sincere people of faith refuse to celebrate Christmas. Their reasons are as varied as they are—and I do not have the space to even list, let alone analyze them all. Others argue that the stories of

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein Jesus’ birth that we read in the gospels are ancient stories that have little or no relevance to modern people who live in a modern world. With that, I respectfully disagree.

In my home and in my family, we will celebrate his birth on Dec. 25. Prior to the date itself, my wife will watch the growing number of Christmas movies that air on TV. Christmas music will be played in our home and in our car. Our house will be decorated, we will exchange gifts and host a family Christmas dinner.

Our celebration will be quiet, personal and very focused—for it was in December 2005 that Kathryn suffered a massive stroke.

She spent that Christmas in hospital, in a drug induced coma following the brain surgery that saved her life.

At Christmas, we always

say a special “thank you” to God for all those who have had a hand in Kathryn’s amazing recovery and for the things she has taught us about taking life one day at a time.

When I see you, I will wish you a “Merry Christmas.”

If that offends you, please accept my apologies in advance. No offense was intended. I hope none was taken.

To me, when you commemorate the birth of Jesus isn’t important. How you commemorate the birth of Jesus isn’t important. What’s important is that you find some time in the year when you read the stories of and reflect on the incredible miracle that happened when he was born.

“But Neil,” some will say, “Didn’t Jesus specifically tell us that we were sup-

posed to remember his death?” Yes, he did—it happened on the night before he died. “So why then,” they will ask, “In the face of such a clear command, are you asking us to reflect on his birth?”

Because before a person can die, he or she must first be born. And for us to fully understand and appreciate what happened the day Jesus died, we must fully understand and appreciate what happened on the day he was born. That’s what we will explore in this series of columns.

I hope these writings will give you some food for thought and help you take a slightly more critical look at the way we celebrate Christmas—especially in North America.

Don’t let your views concerning the date of Christmas, or your concerns about the trappings associated with it keep you from remembering who was born on that day and why he came to earth. Just celebrate Jesus—God’s great gift to you and all humanity.

How we dress reflects who we are

o those who know me well, and to those who know me a little, you know that I have an appreciation for clothes. I don’t believe that clothes make the person, but I do believe that how we dress reflects who we are. My mother maintained that though we may have been lacking excess money, we could be clean. She also taught that the use of pins in place of a proper repair usually indicated one’s lack of attention to details – such improvising in one area of life could denote sloth and deceit. But this I know, it is how one wears the clothes that makes the real difference.

One of my sisters views clothing as part costume.

She sews most of her outfits and wears them with

joy for a season. Another sister wears basic black with colour accents. She is always ready for any situation. I am somewhere in between.

I love colour, I appreciate fashion, and my articles of clothing need to go the distance – good for several years. Classic with a bit of an edge. I have learned that comfortable clothing does not need to be sweat suits and knits. Nice clothes are comfortable as well; and when I wear nice clothes, not necessarily expensive clothes, I feel better about myself. I have developed an affection for boots. School space already exists Once again, the Beautiful Plains board of trustees and senior administration need reminding, whilst wringing their hands and moaning publicly, “woe be us”, that Beautiful Plains School Division (BPSD) is not synonymous with Neepawa. Plenty of classroom space does exist in BPSD in superb conditions, and with several advantages over any space Neepawa itself can ever hope to provide in even its wildest dreams.

This space is 10 classrooms, at the cost of a few bus drivers’ salaries and gasoline, a mere 10 miles away on an all weather highway, at Eden.

Are they forgetting small children in the far reaches of Mountain Road or Arden or Birnie, probably 40+ miles on the bus twice a day, are expected to handle the inconvenience to get an education?

Hiding behind the double shield of school of choice and 20 pupil class size for under Grade 3 is just a “red herring”. The board needs to use its so called “proactive energy,” which it assures us it has, to deal with these two encumbrances. After all, these two concepts were not and have not been chiselled in stone and handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai. Any education minister can certainly tweak these guidelines to accommodate unusual circumstances, if indeed proactive representation is being done in this regard.

In review, two years ago, my first article to the newspaper on this topic outlined several advantages of Eden over Neepawa, synopsis of which is: • a 10 classroom space in a fully modernized technologically equipped school • a huge landscaped country playground with space for five games of baseball and/or soccer that can accommodate 10 classes.

• plenty of extra space and playground equipment and structure for two or three more classes to use.

• a fully modernized skating rink right on the schoolyard itself, a mere 100 meters from the school’s front doors.

No school board in all of Manitoba can boast such superb facilities and advantages already in place. Why keep denying any children such God-sends sitting on a silver platter free for the taking?

If Brookdale can also accommodate similarly, (I haven’t been in the school) even three or four more classrooms, then 14 rooms with 20 students equals 280 student spaces under Grade 3; but this can be tweaked above Grade 3 for 14 rooms with 25 students each to actually accommodate possibly 350 student spaces.

It just seems like a “no brainer” solution to use these spaces effectively, when basically only a few buses and/or bus drivers’ salaries would accomplish solving the BPSD problem being misrepresented as a Neepawa problem.

What is particularly disturbing about the trustees’ article of Nov. 27, 2015 is the quote, “it wouldn’t be something the Board of Trustees would want to impose.”

Well both senior administration who are responsible to provide educational leadership and the board members who are there to resolve issues are not garnering the “big bucks” presently being paid out to them by the tax payers of BPSD to finance a personal popularity contest. Need you be reminded you are there to make hard choices that are fiscally responsible (which means not wasting provincial or municipal tax dollars on new structures of any kind unnecessarily).

It is now more than high time that you are indeed working proactively to accomplish this and presenting it to the public - which should have started a long time ago - as to how to accept a logical solution to the usage of available classroom space within our division.

The situation has become a “bitter pill to swallow” because of public false hopes being built up for a new school. What is probably ironic is the fact that the “bitterest pills” will first need to be swallowed by the senior administration and school board trustees themselves followed by possibly some adults, probably in Neepawa itself.

As for the kids who would be so privileged as to attend this God-sent accommodation at Eden, in particular, it would finally be a breath of fresh air from the presently caged-in circumstances of the Neepawa setting. And of course the kids will just love it!

Finally, the trustee article in the newspaper does state up front “education matters” and of course this is primarily, all just for the kids... isn’t it?

Gladstone to host Christmas concert Submitted Gladstone and District Community Centre A world class pianist and violinist will bring a variety of beloved instrumental songs to the Gladstone and District Community Centre on Dec. 11.

They are Roy and Rosemary, who first met while accompanying The Canadian Tenors, now The Tenors.

“I'm anticipating an inspiring evening,” said Kelvin Bueckert, GDCC board secretary. “It is always good to see talented artists like Rosemary Siemens, who have travelled the world yet are still willing to share their talents with the people of their home province. Personally, one of my favourite elements of Christmas is getting together with people I don't always see, and a concert like this is an excellent opportunity to do that.”

Roy and Rosemary are equally comfortable with classical and pop music and their diverse talents and improvisational skills have led to numerous performance opportunities,

including three different performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, one of which debuted a combined hip-hop and classical concert; a performance as the first ever instrumentalist at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican; entertaining at numerous private events, including for Donald Trump at his Mar-ALago estate in Palm Beach; performing at the Egyptian Consulate in Washington DC, performing at two concerts at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics; as well as the Beijing Summer Olympics and even opening Hockey Night in Canada.

In November of 2012, the duo released their debut piano and violin fusion album “Once Upon a Dream“, featuring some original works along with many familiar and beloved tunes, fully orchestrated and realized in a way that is traditional, yet fresh and exciting.

A very unique part of their show is doing re-

quests from the audience, often even learning and arranging unfamiliar tunes instantly, inviting the audience in to be a part of the show and a key ingredient in the creative process.

Their talents do not end there, however. They always leave their audience wanting more when they hear either, or sometimes both, of them taking up a microphone and serenading them with their voices in perfect pitch.

“Every ticket sold helps us to keep our local community centre and projects like this going,” said Bueckert. “So, I guess, you could say this concert really is a community event.

With that said, I'd thank everyone who supports us and enables us to put on events of this calibre.

It may sound cliche, but in this case it really is true.

We really couldn't do all this without the support of our community.”

Doors for the concert will open at 7 p.m., with showtime at 7:30 p.m.

Neepawa Inner Wheel celebrating 60th in 2016 Submitted The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Inner Wheel, which is an organization affiliated with the International Inner Wheel (IIW) and Neepawa Rotary Club, is celebrating its 60th anniversary next year. Plans for the celebration were highlighted at the Rotary Meeting on Nov. 20, where several Neepawa Inner Wheel members brought reports about the group, their past and present activities and plans for the future.

Mary Ellen Clark shared how Neepawa Inner Wheel members annually host the welcoming orientation for incoming participants of the International Youth Exchange Program sponsored by Rotary District # 5550 — that serves Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario — from Thunder Bay to the Manitoba border.

In September, 15 international students from across the world were welcomed here in Neepawa, including Christina Pichardo from Seville, Spain, the current Rotary Exchange Youth studying at Neepawa Area Collegiate.

Just recently, local IIW members nominated the active Neepawa Chapter of Victoria Quilts to receive the annual ‘national’ donation of Inner Wheel District 555.

This award provided $1,000 to local Victoria Quilters for their continuing service to craft hand-made quilts and gift these to cancer patients across western Canada.

Inner Wheel members are also active in the annual Neepawa Rotary Auction, serving in many roles, including introducing auction items on camera, taking telephone bids and making sandwiches and cookies available to everyone volunteering and bidding on site at the Roxy Theatre. They have also supported Neepawa’s Palliative Care to purchase coffee, tea and juice and general supplies for families who are supporting a family member at end of life.

Other local Inner Wheel projects include monthly visits to Country Meadows, bringing flowers to residents for their birthdays, and two annual fundraising projects.

‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?’ — is a series of parties on one evening — where hosts don’t know who will be arriving at their door and guests don’t know where they are going until they are leaving their home. IW’s ‘Visiting Gift Basket’ rotates between members’ homes to encourage catching up with friends and making new ones. Neepawa’s IW monthly supports a foster child in Tanzania through Plan Canada, annually sponsors a Grade 4 or 5 student to attend Camp Wanacumbak

Licence plate covers against the law Spruce Plains RCMP report Nov. 30 Submitted Spruce Plains RCMP Members stopping vehicles over the past several weeks issued tickets for driving without a valid licence (two), driving without driver’s liability insurance (two), carrying liquor in a vehicle contrary to the Liquor and Gaming Control Act (fine $237.50) and the usual speeders.

Bev Finlayson reported that, while Inner Wheel is not huge in Canada, the International Inner Wheel is the largest women’s service organization in the world, with 3,895 clubs world-wide. The Neepawa Club remains one of the strongest in the IIW District 555 of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and, nationally, across Canada.

Current Neepawa Inner Wheel President, Deva-Marie Beck, reported that the group is planning their big celebration for their 60th anniversary on Sept. 16 and 17, 2016 in Neepawa, by hosting and entertaining all members of IIW District 555 for their ‘Fun & Friendship’ annual general meeting. She invited Neepawa Rotarians to mark these dates and be prepared to support their dynamic Inner Wheel partners.

Active membership in Inner Wheel is available to women 18 years and older. Traditionally, Inner Wheel members have been eligible if they were related to Rotarians and former Rotarians or to Inner Wheel members or former members. However, at the 2012 IIW International Convention in Istanbul, this older ruling has been revised to now allow members at each community level to invite any lady friend to fully participate, providing that a majority of the Club members agree.

Bacon, cheese and onion bread 1/2 lb. bacon, cooked and crumbled 1 Tbsp. bacon drippings 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 1/2 cups flour 1 Tbsp. baking powder 1 tsp. Mrs. Dash

1/2 tsp. each of pepper and salt 1/2 cup butter 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup milk 1 cup grated old cheddar cheese 1/3 cup grated cheese

Sauté onion in bacon drippings. Sift flour, baking powder, Mrs. Dash, pepper and salt together and cut in butter. Stir egg and milk together and add to the flour mix. Do not over mix! Fold in cheese, onions and bacon.

Spread in a greased 8x8” pan. Spread the 1/3 cup cheese over top. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until done.

Global leader in Harvest Hoedown sale in Neepawa agriculture partners with local companies

By Kira Paterson The Neepawa Banner On Nov. 25, Farmers Edge announced that they will be partnering with Redfern Farm Services and NeepawaGladstone Co-op to provide their services to southwestern Manitoba.

Farmers Edge, an international company that originated in Manitoba, uses technology to help farmers grow their crops more efficiently. They use Variable Rate Technology (VRT) to show where in a farmer’s field needs more or less seed, fertilizer, herbicide and other products to minimize waste and maximize yield. The company has staff who go out and take soil samples, access satellites to get pictures of the fields and weather stations set up at their customers’ farms to collect data.

The data gets stored in a database to which the farmers and the company have access. Farmers Edge also analyzes the data and gives the farmers recommendations based on the information they get.

Farmers Edge has partnered with Redfern and Neepawa-Gladstone Co-op to give customers a convenient way to get their services.

Redfern already provides some of the components of the programs that are now available with enhancements through Farmers Edge. Now, they will have the ability to offer the more comprehensive Farmers Edge services and provide their customers with the innovative VRT, as well as the services they already offer.

Ray Redfern, founder of Redfern Farm Services, said that his staff will be able to deliver much of the components of these services. He said they already do soil sampling and will continue to do so. The main difference is that they will be sending that data and the other information that they collect with the new technology to the Farmers Edge database for analysis. He said that along with the computer analysis at Farmers Edge, Redfern personnel will also analyze the data and give interpretive observations to their customers. They will work with the customer and Farmers Edge to create a VRT program that works best for the customer.

Redfern said that the reason they partnered with Farmers Edge was to combine resources of both organizations to give customers more options and the ability for more precise farming. He said that VRT is a tool that will be used more and more in agriculture, so it was the logical next step to partner with Farmers Edge.

For Co-op, the partnership means that their Agro customers will have access to the Farmers Edge VRT packages if they want. Rob Melnyk, Co-op’s Agro division manager, said that Co-op will act as a third party to get their customers in touch with Farmers Edge and Farmers Edge will provide all the services. Co-op has offered agronomy services in the past, but now they will be able to offer access to the technology that Farmers Edge uses. Melnyk said that Neepawa-Gladstone Co-op chose to partner with the company because it has been providing these services for a long time and they have the expertise in this field with advanced VRT programs.

Melnyk said that Co-op wants to keep in the forefront of the agriculture business and VRT is the future of agronomy. With technology playing an increased role in modern agriculture, this partnership allows Co-op to supply their client base with the expertise they need to keep up.

Moonlight madness comes to Gladstone

As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up to a larger home is on the upswing across the country, especially as markets remain hampered by tight inventory levels. As a result, more and more people are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of relocating.

In fact, some forecasts predict that 2015 renovation spending could exceed the record of $324 billion set during the peak of last decade's housing boom.

While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options.

Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home.

1. Finish an unfinished basement. A basement renovation can hold limitless potential and increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theater, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapor permeable, dimensionally stable and mold and moisture resistant.

2. Create a more open-concept feel with light and color. If your home wasn’t blessed with tow-

ering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space.

Likewise, choosing a paint color for walls, trim and moldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel.

3. Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing nonload-bearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger, improve flow, lighting and the function of your home.

4. Convert your garage into usable living or work space. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage –– and is often a walk-in headache. Convert your garage (or a portion of it) into another living space, guest bedroom or home office.

5. Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dualpurpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budget-friendly way to save on space while staying organized.

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner Hockey communities across Canada continue to support Braden Pettinger and Neepawa is no exception.

The Neepawa Farmers of the Tiger Hills Hockey League recently organized a progressive 50/50 draw for the 20-year-old. Pettinger was paralyzed from the chest down from a fall into the boards during an MJHL game on Nov. 12.

By Saturday, Nov. 29, $1,080 was raised from the 50/50, with half that amount going directly to the Pettinger family. The winner of the 50/50 also chose to donate a sizeable portion of the winnings to the cause.

Neepawa Farmers rep Rodney White said that the team was very happy with the support this endeavour has received.

“It was very good to see so many people provide support for this fundraiser. $540 is going directly to the Go Fund Me page and another donation has been given by the winner of the 50/50, so we’re very pleased with the re-

Hockey is competitive, but in many ways it’s also a fraternity. Anyone who plays or has played the game understands the danger that’s out there on the

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League set up a Go Fund Me page to cover the cost of Pettinger’s current and future treatment.

As of Wednesday, Dec. 2, it had raised just over $142,000. Other fundraising efforts planned across the province include a Boxing Day social in the town of Souris and a fundraising event in Pettinger’s hometown of Elgin, tentatively scheduled for February or March.

Yellowhead splits weekend Submitted The Neepawa Banner The Yellowhead AAA Midget Female Chiefs welcomed the Winnipeg Avros to the Shoal Lake Communiplex for a set of weekend games to finish off their November schedule. The Saturday, Nov. 28 tilt was a great game for the hosts in every way, except the final result, as they were defeated 1-0.

The Chiefs fired 60 shots on Avros netminder Lauren Taraschuk through three periods and five minutes of overtime and could not score that all important goal.

In the first period, Hannah Fouillard buried a rebound only to have the referee blow the play dead just as the puck popped loose. McKenna Paddock beat two defenders at the blue line in the second period and then rang the puck off the cross bar past Taraschuk.

In the third, the hosts continued to dominate, with numerous chances, including a pair of end to end rushes from captain Jalyn Elmes, all ending in frustration at the net. In the shootout, the Avros scored on their first shot, with McKenna Paddock tying the contest up on her first chance. The shootout would go through 10 rounds before the Avros scored again, as Emma Greenwood was every bit as solid in the Chiefs goal. Unfortunately, in the end, Yellowhead could not get the final goal and suffered their first regular season loss, although they did gain another point in the standings with the OT defeat.

On Sunday, Nov. 29, the teams faced off again and a determined bunch of Chiefs were focused on keeping the streak of no regulation time losses going. The Avros were energized by their victory the night before, outshooting the Chiefs in the first period by a 9-6 count, with Emma Greenwood again providing steady goaltending for Yellowhead.

It appeared that goaltender Lauren Taraschuk would again be the story for Winnipeg until the Chiefs finally broke through for a goal late in the first. Karli Frederick won a battle on the wall in the Chiefs end and hit Karissa Cullum with a great break out pass. The speedy winger broke into the Avros zone and worked the puck past a defender into the slot. Jena Barscello took it from there as she deked around a defender and roofed a slick backhand shot that went bar down into the Avros goal.

Into the second, the Chiefs were in a tight game as Winnipeg tied it on a power-play at the midway point of the period. Sam Geekie scored to put Yellowhead ahead before the period ended, as Hannah Fouillard and Tatum Amy cycled the puck in the Avros end before firing a low shot to the net where Geekie deflected it home, despite a rather large Avros defender draped over her.

With the lead in the third, Geekie was back to salt the victory away as she snapped a shot past Taraschuk to the stick side with the assist coming from Tatum Amy. The Chiefs played a solid defensive game for the rest of the period and game and took the 3 – 1 victory to move into second place in the league standings.

Minnedosa bowlers going to Nationals Submitted The Neepawa Banner A pair of local bowlers will represent Manitoba at the 2016 Youth Challenge Nationals. Suade Moyer and Christopher Obsniuk, who both participate weekly in the five pin youth program at Minnedosa Bowl, recently competed at the Youth Challenge Provincials in Carman. A total of 41 youth bowlers between the ages of 13 and 19 years old took part in the event.

Bowlers representing three divisions: Winnipeg, Central (Carman, Portage La Prairie, Minnedosa) and Westman (Brandon,

Carberry) were involved in the five pin tournament.

The format consisted of six games bowled in a total pinfall score to declare the champions. Those winners then go on to represent Manitoba at the Youth Challenge Nationals, to be held in March. Both Moyer and Obsniuk qualified and will play for the province at this event.

To help facilitate with the cost of the three day national tournament, a raffle has been organized to raise money for the pair. Anyone interested in participating can do so by contacting Minnedosa Bowl for details. The draw date is set for Jan. 28.

Neepawa Natives acquire left winger

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Natives have secured the Canadian Junior Hockey League playing rights to 19-year-old Jace Pesch. Pesch has played nine games this season for the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, producing three goals in that span.

Last season, the Americian born left winger played for the East Grand Forks Greenwave in the U.S. high school hockey system. In his final year with the club, he served as the team’s captain and produced 23 points (8-15) over 24 games. Pesch was also instrumental in helping to lead East Grand Forks to back-to-back Class A State Hockey Championships.

Fouillard joining University of Alberta Submitted The Neepawa Banner The Yellowhead AAA Midget Female Chiefs have announced that assistant captain Hannah Fouillard has committed to play for the University of Alberta Pandas in Edmonton, Alberta in 2016.

The resident of St. Lazare is in her fourth year with the Chiefs, playing 191 games in her career to date, scoring 48 goals with 61 assists for 109 points. This season, Fouillard was a member of Team Manitoba U-18 and helped that team to a silver medal at the U-18 National Tournament in November.

Known for her speed and relentless hard work, the forward was the Chiefs Rookie of the Year in 2012-2013 and last season was recognized as the teams’ Unsung Hero and Top Playoff Performer.

The University of Alberta is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta and offers over 370 degree programs from more than 300 disciplines, from 15 faculties and schools, as well as certificates and diplomas.

The Pandas play in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association of the Canadian Inter-university Sport Athletic Association and have been one of the elite programs in the CIS, with several national titles to their credit under long time head coach Howie Draper.

Rural art studio in Minnedosa aims to inspire

By Vern May Submitted A generation ago, the thought of an art gallery becoming a fixture on Main Street in any rural Manitoba community may have been summarily dismissed. The belief that art represents too small a market within our towns would label the proposal to be a risky endeavor.

However, increasingly, our communities are seeing an adoption of arts and culture and the heart of that activity is making its way “downtown” in our commercial neighborhoods.

In Minnedosa, the lease has just been signed and renovations underway for the development of the Inspire Studio of Fine Art. The site, sandwiched between a bakery and a hair salon on Main Street was formerly a restaurant and had been earmarked for development as a residential suite by the owner. The introduction of a gallery and community arts and culture hub is being viewed as a welcome addition to fill the vacancy.

However, with a growing inventory of her own work and an increase in requests for classes and workshops, it was time to look at a more formal environment.

Her story is similar to that of Kathleen Lagasse in Souris, who initiated a swell of interest in oil on canvas painting over the past year. Lagasse started teaching classes out of the basement studio of her home and at the end of her first year, had a roster of more than 40 budding

artists developing their craft through her program.

This fall, she needed to grow her operation and opened her own gallery on Crescent Avenue, just steps away from the community’s iconic Swinging Bridge. Lagasse’s success, Soltys hopes, can serve as a model for what is possible for other rural centres to embrace art – not only as consumers, but as artists themselves.

Renovation work is currently aggressively underway with multiple phases of development identified.

First is the gallery and retail space, offering not only Soltys, but all area artisans a venue to display and sell their work. In addition, the site offers the layout for two teaching spaces to host classes in various art disciplines.

“It’s been very exciting,” says Soltys. “I have already had calls from both artists and instructors who are interested in what we’re doing here and are looking to get involved and share their art or their talents. There’s a very active art community in western Manitoba that many people might not even realize. Painters, photographers, sculptors and quilters. We need to showcase them all.”

More network upgrades for Neepawa Submitted Westman Communications Group Westman Communications Group has just completed the second phase of a fibre network upgrade for Neepawa. The second phase involved doing node splits. A node split essentially doubles the amount of bandwidth available for each house. The additional bandwidth available to each home in Neepawa will accommodate faster internet speeds, the increase of internet traffic and the expansion of high definition video offerings.

“These node splits are extremely well timed as we are having a tremendous response by the residents of Neepawa to our new internet speeds. Our existing customers enjoy their faster internet speeds that were implemented in early October at no additional cost. At the same time, we have welcomed new customers who like our lower prices and higher speeds versus the internet offerings from our competitor,” said John Quail, chief marketing officer of Westman Communications.

The node splits are part of the second phase of an 18 month program with Westman spending $4 Million proactively upgrading network infrastructure in eight communities in Western Manitoba. “The upgrade program enables us to offer even higher speeds in the future as our members’ needs continue to evolve, especially for streaming high definition video,” said Quail.

Obituary Krantz Wayne Louis Krantz passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at Edmonton Hospital, at the age of 52 years, on November 11, 2015. He was raised and confirmed in Waldersee, MB, schooling in Plumas and Gladstone.

Wayne was predeceased by his father, Harvey, who passed away Oct. 17, 2015. Left to mourn his memories, mother Thelma of Portage; his partner of 11 years, Karen; his daughter Savanna (Cory) of St. Catherines; his son Cole (Celine) of Oak Lake; Karen's children Rebecca and Aiden of Edmonton; sister Brenda (Gregg McCamis) of Portage, and their daughter Kaylee (Jake); brother Kelly (Carla) of Millet, Alberta and his daughter Rachelle; brother Craig (Lynne) of St Francois Xavier.

Wayne also leaves to mourn aunties, uncles, cousins and families, and many friends. Funeral was held Nov. 15, 2015 in Edmonton. Wayne will be laid to rest with his father at a later date.

Obituary Margaret Gal

Sadly, but with thankful hearts, we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Margaret Gal. She left this world peacefully surrounded by loving family on Friday, November 27 at Gladstone Hospital.

Margaret was born on July 8, 1920 in Sarospatak, Hungary, the first born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Gotz) Karaz. At the age of 10, she and her family immigrated to Canada and settled in the McDonald/Longburn area ,where she attended school and learned English quickly.

She was proud to have had a spoken part in her first Christmas concert at Longburn School. On October 19, 1940, she married Julius Gal who had also immigrated to Canada and whose family were friends and neighbours of the Karaz family in Hungary. This marriage was blessed with three children, Emery, Arnold and Betty. Margaret and Julius settled into farming northwest of Plumas and here they spent the next 54 years.

Margaret loved her vocation of housewife and mother.

She led a life of purpose and was an active member of the Plumas Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Her strong Christian faith sustained her always. She loved her family deeply and welcomed each new member lovingly. There was nothing that made her happier than to see family gathered together celebrating a joyous occasion. Friends also played a huge role in her life. She loved you all.

After Julius’ passing, Margaret made her home in Neepawa for fifteen years. She became active in this community also, volunteering and spending time with friends, old and new. She loved this time of her life. In 2005, Margaret moved to Gladstone, making her home at Centennial Apartments.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Joseph Karaz, brothers Anthony and Joseph. She will be forever in the hearts of her children, Emery and Isabelle, Arnold and Marlene and Betty and Ernie as well as in the hearts of her much loved eight grandchildren, Kelly (Ian) Gal Hawkins, Stephen Gal, Gillian (Mike) Gal Hum, Dean (Jodi) and Tammy Gal, Darren (Christy), Trent (Lacey) and Clinton (Jill) Burdeniuk. Twelve great grandchildren will also miss having her in their lives. She was affectionately known as Gamm by her grandchildren and great grandchildren and through the years by many others. Also surviving her are her sister Elizabeth (Lem), Stephen (Arlene) and Raymond Karaz, sisters- in- law Stephanie and Helen Karaz as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, their families and many friends.

Her life was celebrated at a Mass of the Resurrection on Thursday, December 3, 2015 11:00 A.M.at St. Dominics R.C.Church Neepawa. Celebrant was Father Mark Filips. Interment was in Plumas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice or to the St. Dominic’s Raise the Roof Fund would be appreciated.

Obituary John A. Wiebe

John A. Wiebe passed away peacefully at McCreary-Alonsa Health Centre at the age of 83 years on November 24, 2015 with his family by his side.

John was born on February 7, 1932 near Winkler, Manitoba.

He was the eldest son of Abram and Tina Wiebe. He grew up on their farm near Horndean. He shared memories of walking behind the horses as they pulled harrows as a boy. He remembers the first tractor and car that his dad purchased. He got a Grade 5 formal education, but through reading and experience he was very knowledgeable about many things. As an adolescent, he worked on the farm as well as helping neighbors. Later, he worked for construction companies and in the winter, he hauled logs for the Pulp and Paper mills in Ontario.

Dad had a few close calls with death in his life and one in particular landed him in Carmen Hospital at which time he met a beautiful lady, Lillian Letkeman, who became his bride on May 5, 1957.

They started their married life in Carmen, then moved to Calgary where he worked as a carpenter. They farmed north of Amaranth for a short time. In 1964, they purchased a farm northwest of Glenella where John resided until his passing.

During these years, God blessed John and Lillian with five children – Marlene, Arthur, Gordon, Sharon and Harvey.

Along with raising his family on the farm, John was involved with the CSSM in Amaranth, did construction work, served as a municipal councillor and strove to be a helpful son, brother, friend and neighbor. He enjoyed visiting, singing, fishing, and “making” wood for winter he liked to be warm.

John was predeceased by his parents Abram and Tina Wiebe, parents-in-law Abram and Olga Letkeman, sister Justina Giesbrecht, brothers Frank and Isaac, brother-inlaws Pete Enns and Frank Giesbrecht.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian. Daughters: Marlene and Sharon (Dave) Rempel. Sons: Arthur (Teresa), Gordon (Debra) and Harvey. Grandchildren: Art - Brian and Kyle Wiebe, Jeff, Jon and Josh Fiskel; Gordon – Leanne (Donovan) Haus and Joanne Wiebe; Sharon Coleman and Alix Rempel. Great grandchildren: Brian – Nathan and Levi, Leanne – Dexter, Bentley and Harper.

Brothers: Henry (Ada) Wiebe, Bill (Joyce) Wiebe, sisters: Margaret (Dave) Friesen, Helen (Marvin) Klassen, Katherine (Peter) Friesen, Edna (James) Friesen, Linda (Herman) Leoppky, sister-in-laws: Matilda Wiebe, Erna Unrau along with many nieces and nephews and their families.

Many thanks to all the family, friends and neighbors who have come along side John’s family during his illness and at this time of loss.

Funeral Service was held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Gladstone Christian Fellowship with Pastors Randy Fehr and Josiah Preuter officiating.

Interment took place prior to the service at the Riding Mountain Cemetery.

Tragically on November 2nd, 2015 Wayne Edward Gork and Gladys Anne (Squires) Gork left this world together after a beautiful Sunday spent with family and friends.

Wayne Gork was born on April 2, 1945, the youngest son of Edward and Margaret Gork. He was raised on the family farm SE 14-17-14 in the RM of Lansdowne along with his older sister, Doreen (Kaspick) and older brother, Raymond. He attended Molesworth school and then went on to take grade nine in Birnie. Later he worked on the family farm with his father and brother. Wayne spent his entire life on the farm at Birnie, MB. It was a labor of love.

Gladys was the youngest daughter of Percy and Dorothy Squires, she was born in the Molesworth district on September 29, 1947. Gladys was a sister to Phyllis (Janush), Joyce, Irene (Lambourne), Mae (Schettler), and Mary (Gardiner). She had three brothers; Walter, Vernon (who died in infancy) and William. At the young age of six, her father Percy died leaving Dorothy to raise the family by herself. They later moved to Glenella from their residence in the Molesworth district. Gladys attended Molesworth school for grade one but later transferred to Glenella school at the time of her father’s passing and finished grade 12 at Kelwood, graduating in 1966. After high school, she moved with her mother to Brandon, MB and worked at the Prince Edward Hotel as a maid.

Wayne and Gladys were married on September 28, 1968 and settled on the Gork family farm. They lived in a mobile home, later moving into the place they have called home since 1975. Wayne and his brother Raymond joined a partnership and conducted a mixed farming operation together for 33 years until Ray’s retirement. After that, Wayne’s two sons, Darwin and Jason, took over Raymond’s share and currently operate as Gork Farms.

Gladys always fulfilled the role of homemaker, a labor of love for her family. Never a birthday should go by without special greetings from Mom and a serving of her infamous maple chiffon cake. Later in life she worked casual hours as a postal worker. Wayne and Gladys were members of the United Church and were very active socially, attending old time dances, bowling, curling and playing cards or visiting with friends and family. In 2013, Wayne and Gladys enjoyed a trip to Charlottetown PEI where Wayne bowled in Nationals. One of Wayne’s proudest moments was when he claimed the silver medal for 5 pin singles at the Canada 55+ Games in 2014.

Family was always central in their lives. They leave to mourn their three children.

Darwin (Lori Skanderbeg), Jason (Katherine Birch) and Shawna (Stefan Levasseur). Their grandchildren were always near and dear to their hearts. Elise and Konur, Maxwell, Tallon, Simone and Mikhayla were often referred to as their “little angels”.

Exodus 23:20-21 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says.”

Left also to mourn are Gladys’ sisters Irene Lambourne of Alonsa, MB, and Mae Schettler (Arnold) of Waldersee, MB, brother in law Jack Gardiner of Brandon, MB, Bella Young of Portage la Prairie, MB. Wayne’s sister Doreen Kaspick (Vern) of Esterhazy, SK and brother Raymond Gork (Marjorie) of Neepawa, MB, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The loss of two beautiful people leaves a community of close friends and neighbours with special memories and a deep sense of loss. Wayne and Gladys were kind, genuine and loving people. Their cheerful smiles and pleasant ways will be missed by all who knew them.

A celebration of their lives was held Saturday, November 07th, 2015 at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa, MB. Interim followed at Riverside Cemetery. White’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

We find comfort in knowing that they left this world together.

We take solace that there were many angels waiting to embrace them on their return home.

Myva was predeceased by her parents William and Sarah Balkwill, her husband Peter Flaming, five brothers and two sisters.

Myva leaves to mourn her passing, three sons; Leon and wife Jenny, Leslie and wife Sharon, Kelly (Christine) and one daughter Doreen and her husband Grant, 3 grandsons Arlan, Thomas and Josiah, 4 granddaughters Sharla (Lindsay), Kerri (Curtis), Valdine and Amanda (Alex) and 8 great grandchildren. Also mourning her passing are 2 brothers Neil and Don, 3 sisters Isabel, Margaret and May. Myva was always involved in Church services and accepted the Lord at the age of 21. During the next 73 years Myva faithfully served her Lord in many avenues of her life and taught Sunday school, led open air Church Services and even managed a Salvation Army Thrift store. She was ever ready to stand up and testify about the goodness of the Lord, even on the morning of her passing she was telling the nurses in the Dauphin General Hospital Intensive Care about her wonderful Lord. Her favorite scripture passage was the Twenty Third Psalm and immediately prior to leaving this world she was reciting it with her son Leslie. Myva’s family was very important to her and she loved to send cards and letters to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin, Manitoba with Rev. Mark Johnston officiating. Interment followed in the Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Manitoba.
