Two area groups join efforts to attract soy processing facility

NADCO, along with two other municipalities, have stepped forward to help attract a soybean facility to Manitoba. NADCO (Neepawa Area Development Corporation), which is made up of representatives from the Town of Neepawa and municipalities of North CypressLangford, Rosedale and Glenella-Lansdowne, formally joined the Westman Opportunities Leadership Group (WOLG) last month.

WOLG is working to attract a world class soybean facility to Manitoba, ideally Westman, laying the ground work for an established player to actually build and operate the facility. Launched earlier this year, the volunteer-led group is being described as a proactive investment attraction process.

“This gives NADCO a seat at the table,” said Town of Neepawa Economic Development Officer Marilyn Crewe, who has been selected as NADCO’s representative. She explained that involvement at the board level will give them direct contact with project development, including site selection. “It’s important for us to be part of it,” said Crewe. The investment, which ef fectively gives NADCO shares in WOLG, will be used for development costs, such as research and consultants’ fees.

The group is still in the research phase, determining not only the amenities available in various communities, but also projecting long-term crushing demand for this crop, which is growing in popularity.

WOLG chair Ray Redern explains, “WOLG is a volunteer grassroots organization, and is not looking to build a plant – we are focused on attracting the right private sector investment, based upon the economic merits of it to the soy industry, to Manitoba agriculture, and ultimately, to all Manitoba communities.”

With soybean acres increasing across the province, providing a Canadian crushing option is very important. Over 1.6 million acres of soybeans were seeded in Manitoba in 2016, a significant increase over 2015 levels. Last year, Manitoba Agriculture was forecasting that if current trends continue, 3 million acres of the crop could be grown in the province by 2022. The plant would be advantageous to not only Manitoba soybean growers, but also those in eastern Saskatchewan. Today, the crop is all exported to crushing plants in the U.S. Seat at the table While the group hopes to see a plant located somewhere in the province, they are focusing on the Westman area. which is the major consumer of soybean meal, is taking place in the western part of Manitoba. “We want to have a made in Canada option,” said Crewe, adding, that a plant located anywhere in Manitoba will have a positive impact on the Neepawa-area economy.

A Manitoba-based soybean plant won’t only help Manitoba farmers growing the crop, but will also help their suppliers, as well as hog producers, who use the meal as a feed source.

Talking about spin-offs, “It’s quite an extensive list,” said Crewe.

While the investment doesn’t mean that the plant will be located in the Neepawa area, Crewe said that the town does have a number of amenities needed for a plant, including highway and rail access, water, hydro and natural gas.

A 40 to 50 acre parcel of land that can be serviced with these utilities would be needed for such a facility.

With NADCO, and not the individual municipalities,

working with WOLG, the Neepawa area also has another attractive asset, a proven ability for area municipalities to work together.

“Corporations like to see communities that can work together,” said Crewe.

Even if the work doesn’t result in a plant being located in the Neepawa area, Crewe said that being part of the process will give them information and experience they can apply to attracting other potential projects.

‘Neil Diamond just fell out of my face’

With fantastic support in the communities, back once again is the Neil Diamond tribute, Diamond Forever. This time there will be two shows, one at the Neepawa Legion on August 25 and the Gladstone Legion on August 26.

Jason Scott, Neil Diamond tributer, is based out of Cranbrooke BC and has been doing these shows for 15 years with the Royal Canadian Legions.

It all started when Scott went out to karaoke night for his sisters birthday, “My sister asked me to go up and sing a song for her, I saw one called Love on the Rocks by Neil Diamond, so I decided to give it a try. I was looking at the screen the whole time because I didn’t know the words and as I turned around after the audience went crazy. That’s when I realized, Neil Diamond just fell out of my face.”

Scott started doing shows in British Columbia and Vancouver Island and then slowly made his way into Alberta and then Saskatchewan and Manitoba as well. All with the help

of the Royal Canadian Legions. This tour has provided Scott with the travelling he wanted to do since he signed his record deal. “It’s a tribute, not an impersonation,” he said. Scott’s shows are very audience reactive, they get the audience to clap and sing, there will even be a dancing competition with prizes within the show. “It’s always a fun time,” says Scott.

For Scott, his work on Diamond Forever has not just opened the doors to travel across Canada and the US but also brought him to the silver screen.

He started attending the Conservatory of Music in Toronto at the age of five, achieving first-degree honours and graduated by the age of 15. Jason was the first ever-Canadian international performer to win the “ Be a Legend” celebrity tribute as Neil Diamond.

In September 2010, Jason Scott was awarded the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Tribute Artists “Best Platinum Showcase Award.”

After 17 years of NDP government, it wasn’t hard to see the need for change.

ust about every election is run on a promise to change.

Most town and municipal councils, provincial and federal governments get elected promising to do a better job than their predecessors. For certain, the Manitoba government lead by Premier Brian Pallister was given a huge mandate to change. After 17 years of NDP government, it wasn’t hard to see the need for change.

Few of the Pallister induced changes have had an easy ride.

The decision to reduce the number of city hospitals that could have an emergency room was unpopular, but it was the right decision. Winnipeg had more ERs than the population justified and the current ER staff can be better utilized in fewer centres.

Of course, there wasn’t much debate in rural Manitoba, as most rural ERs were closed by the NDP a long time ago. Few, if any, people in Winnipeg complained when dozens of rural centres lost their ER. The decision to build some new ambulance centres and close some low volume centres is the right one as well. It is also a decision backed by the Paramedic Association as the medics theoretically will all be fully trained. There is another reason this decision is correct and that is in days gone by with rural volunteer ambulance staff, the idea was that they could get you to staffed ER quickly. That option is gone in many towns so it’s important to have full-time paramedics who can treat emer-

Change is necessary and an essential part of any society or economy. Change has to be embraced and sad to say, we didn’t see balanced change in the NDP years. We could go back to the 1950s, but I doubt that very many people would be happy. Well, some would like the rock and roll music and the neat cars, but that is about where it ends.

I well remember the 1950s and could be forgiven for wanting to go back. Farms were smaller, neighbours were closer together.

Some of the small towns that are now gone were still clinging to life. The Halboro store was still open and so was the historic Coop store at Moline.

Those neat old cars that are now classics, were rear wheel drive and got stuck really easily. I wouldn’t go back to a rear wheel drive car on a bet, except maybe for a parade vehicle. The municipal roads in the winter time weren’t open at times and at times for days on end. I remember one six week stretch when we used a sleigh

with a closed in van and a team of horses. Farming was a dirty, dirty job. Some will remember the combines, swathers and tractors that didn’t have cabs.

Just as farming and rural communities have had to change, so must our delivery of government services. The Pallister government has to bring about changes, we can’t afford not to have changes. They could and should do a better job of explaining what they have in mind and how they are going to change and when. I have told everyone I have met in the provincial cabinet, their staff and the premier that their communications process is lacking. I think the words I used were, “It sucks.”

We need changes, big changes, in health care, education and all other government services. We need to embrace new ways of doing business and new ways of allowing businesses to provide services. The changes are coming and some good initiatives have been rolled out. The province needs better planning and better communications. It’s not too much to ask.

ow long should the legal process in Canada take? One year? Three years? Five years? There’s a crisis brewing in the Canadian courts and Manitoba might have a solution, though it’s not without its detractors.

In July 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that from the time a charge is laid, to the conclusion of a trial, Superior Court cases will have up to 30 months to be completed and provincial court cases will have 18 months, or 30 months if there MY is a preliminary PERSPECTIVE inquiry. Their decision added that any delays beyond this time Kate frame violate the Jackman-Atkinson accused’s Charter right to be tried within a reasonable time. The time limits don’t apply if the delays are a result of the defence team.

The ruling was in response to two cases before the Supreme Court.

In the first, Barrett Richard Jordan, who was convicted of selling cocaine and heroin, waited 49 months from the time of his arrest to his conviction. In the second case, Kenneth Gavin Williamson waited nearly three years for his trial on decades-old charges relating to sex offences against a minor.

Justice Thomas Cromwell, who agreed to stay the Jordan case but disagreed with the new framework, cautioned that the new guidelines could result in a stay of proceedings for thousands of cases and felt the deadlines were too blunt an instrument.

Cromwell’s concerns weren’t unfounded; a Globe and Mail review published in February, found that across Canada, lawyers were looking to suspend more than 800 criminal cases because of unreasonable delays. By October 2016, a first degree murder charge in Alberta was stayed, because it took five years to go to trial, and in Ontario, a conviction for assault causing bodily harm was stayed because it had taken five-and-a-half years.

In Manitoba, Justice minister Heather Stefanson, chief justices Richard Chartier and Glenn Joyal along with chief Judge Margaret Wiebe have proposed a four-year pilot project which would eliminate preliminary hearings, which take place in court and are overseen by a judge, in less serious cases. The experiment would allow the province to remove the preliminary inquiry process for offences with a sentence less than 10 years. In more serious cases, an out-of-court discovery process would replace the existing preliminary hearing.

In Manitoba, preliminary hearings are a source of “considerable delay” said Joyal; a year-long wait isn’t uncommon and sometimes, they can stretch into two years.

Though it has generated interest, the Manitoba proposal is also facing some opposition. The association that represents Manitoba defence lawyers said that preliminary inquiries provide a chance to question witnesses and often result in deals or dropped charges, which ultimately save court time. The Canadian Bar Association, which represents both Crown and defence lawyers, said that the proposal wouldn’t solve the problem. They feel that delays would be more effectively reduced by appointing more judges, providing more legal aid, eliminating mandatory sentencing and using court alternatives to deal with minor charges.

The Supreme Court cited a “culture of complacency”, but those in the industry say the cause of delays are numerous. It’s unclear if the federal government will approve Manitoba’s pilot project, but the decision will likely depend on the findings from a federal policy development committee, which is looking into the prevalence and use of preliminary inquiries. At the end of the day, it’s in everyone’s interest to see cases move through the courts in a timely manner and there are clearly problems in Canada’s court systems when cases are taking five or more years to be completed. I’m glad to see that Manitoba has at least proposed a cost-effective solution which aims to rectify this problem. Even if it isn’t ultimately approved, it’s worthy of consideration.

Opinion Two things money can’t buy

n what could well be one of the most expensive celebrity divorces of all time, Petra Ecclestone and James Stunt are about to dissolve their marriage and divide their shared wealth.

How long this will take and who gets how much has yet to be determined.

The couple married six years ago and have three children. Their total wealth is estimated at $9.3 billion (yes, you read that right).

They can have anything they want. They can go anywhere they want to go.

They can do whatever they choose to do.

So why is the marriage on the rocks? Any why, before everything is settled, could much of their wealth find its way into the pockets of the high profile lawyers who will use every trick in the book to get the best “deal” they can for their respective clients?

As one might expect, rumors abound—lots of them—especially rumors of Stunt’s erratic behavior, multiple overdoses and domestic violence. But I think there is a much simpler

The only difference between celebrity relationships and those of people like you and me is the amount of public scrutiny with which celebrities must live. Take that away from people like Ecclestone and Stunt, and you are left with two people who are trying to live a normal life and create a healthy environment in which to raise their children.

And, like you and me, they have discovered that there are two things that money can’t buy.

First; money can buy companionship, but money can’t buy love. Case in point—the prodigal son about whom Jesus spoke in the gospels. As long as he had money, he was surrounded by people who

loved to help him spend it.

But when his money ran out, they abandoned him.

Money bought him companionship, but it couldn’t buy him love.

That’s because love isn’t something we sell. Love is something we give. And the amount of love we give is based on the amount of trust we have in the person to whom we give it. If that trust is violated once, our ability to love the one who violated it is significantly diminished. If that trust is violated repeatedly, it won’t be long before whatever love there was in the relationship vanishes; and the relationship itself will soon dissolve.

Second; money can buy stuff—lots of stuff—but money can’t buy happiness.

That’s because happiness isn’t based on what we possess. True happiness is based

on contentment. Contentment is being satisfied with who you are, where you are and what you have.

Contented people are, for the most part, happy people.

They work hard. They use their money wisely. If they are offered a different job that has better hours, working conditions or a higher wage, they will consider it. But they are not driven by the obsession to change jobs just because they can make more money and buy more stuff.

True contentment is also rooted in the belief that God is in full control of everything that happens in life and that he will supply our needs—one day at a time.

We, in turn, receive what God gives with gratitude and use what he gives to meet our needs, to support those who depend on us for their well-being (especially our immediate families), to share what we can with those in need and most of all, as a way to show our love for others as God has shown his love for us.

One pretty saucer

emember when giving, or receiving, a china tea cup and saucer was exciting?

Back in the day, a gift of such beauty was a cause for “ahs” and profuse thanks at a bridal shower. Most people of my generation – the leading edge of the Baby Boomers– can recall a series of fine china safely housed in the proper china cabinet.

Even with all my sorting and downsizing, I have one cherished saucer, the cup long gone. It is a deep blue with a soft white flower, edged with gold trim. The cup balanced delicately on three short, slender legs. As do many of the items we treasure, it elicits wondrous memories. That’s why we keep them. The set was a gift from a woman who influenced countless children.

our home– and introducing us to tea. From china tea cups. Their home was small by modern standards. And crowded with beloved furniture. A true dining room table, with matching chairs – again not many farm homes had such luxury. And the china cabinet. Red glass serving dishes that got used, ceramic vases with delicate f lowers. Pictures created from seas shells, tapestry throws on the divan. Again, for a basic farm kid, this home was even fancier than our grandmothers’. They did have a grown son, and had lost a wee one early on in life. The two of them had a heart for children. If they had an organized faith

they never spoke of it. Their love for children shouted out their creed. Fell in a puddle at school, hike over to Mrs. Huntley and she could soothe the situation and get you dry and clean.

The spare clothes may not have been a perfect fit, but they were appreciated.

And so, with the passing of time, as with all of us, they needed to move away, and move on. A parting gift to me was this delicate, fragile tea cup.

Amazing that for one who chooses the outdoors, the rough and tumble, that this set has accompanied me wherever I live. ‘Twas a beloved grandchild that accidentally broke the cup. They never knew the depth of my feeling of loss, for people are always more important than things. The lonely, lovely, saucer still graces my spaces.

Federal government goes after Credit Unions

Did you see the news recently where credit unions were told they are not allowed to use the word “bank”, “banker” and “banking”?

That’s right – the heavy hand of the federal government came down on our much beloved and community orientated credit unions. And for all credit union members out there who thought they were “banking”, I guess you were doing something else all these years while depositing cheques and paying off your mortgages.

While others in Ottawa are spending their time on other matters, like ending up on the front cover of Rolling Stone and doing podcasts on their favourite American television show, I was meeting with our local credit unions and working diligently to return a little common sense to the world.

You see, the federal agency responsible for regulating banks and other financial institutions quietly issued new regulations that will damage the thousands of credit unions that operate across our country.

The regulations issue a blanket prohibition on the use of terms like “bank”, “banker”, and “banking” by basically any entity other than major banks. Credit unions, who have traditionally been allowed to use common terms like “bank with us” or “online banking”, will no longer be allowed to do so.

The terms “bank”, “banker”, and “banking” have been part of the common vernacular for more than a century. In particular, “banking” is a generic verb used to describe a financial transaction.

This decision, which came into effect immediately, has given non-bank financial service providers timelines within which they must remove these terms from electronic mediums, print materials, and physical signage.

As you can imagine, this will result in significant and unnecessary costs for those institutions utilizing what is, in essence, common language in the financial sector.

In fact, the administrative costs to credit unions to change and popularize other unknown terms and order new signs are estimated to be over $80 million.

And why the sudden change?

No explanation has been forthcoming. This has left credit unions and their customers confused as to why they would want to change a decades-old practice. The result of these changes will be increased costs for credit unions, which will have to pay for changes to signage and other marketing. Moreover, it will put them at a further competitive disadvantage when compared to the big banks.

Over the past several months, credit unions and Parliamentarians alike have reached out to the regulator and to the Finance minister to strongly oppose these changes. In fact, at an All-Party Credit Union Caucus meeting on Parliament Hill, MPs and senators from all parties agreed that these changes were unnecessary and harmful.

Unfortunately their views seem to have fallen on deaf Liberal ears.

There are over 300 credit unions nationwide that serve over 5.5 million members. Credit Unions provide a community-focused approach to finances and are regularly recognized as leaders in customer service.

Instead of making business harder for these important institutions, we should be looking for ways to help ensure that credit unions can thrive and prosper in our communities.

It is not too late for the Liberal government to step in and change these regulations. I am calling on the Liberals to work with our Conservative caucus and credit unions to fix this calamity and update the regulations. Building food skills and physical literacy for newcomer youth

This project, supported by Healthy Together Now funding, provided local newcomer youth, between the ages of 10 and 15 with opportunities to build their food skills, as well as introduce some of the local recreation opportunities in the Neepawa community.

Don Walmsley, director of Neepawa and A rea Settlement Services, saw success with a past food skills project, supported by Healthy Together Now, that was targeted at the adult newcomer population this past winter and thought,

this would be something to replicate and bring to the newcomer youth in the community!

“The partnership that we have been able to create, has brought people together to share their knowledge and passion for cooking, provide information about healthy eating in Canada as well as provide a great opportunity for our youth to be active and learn about what recreation opportunities are available in our community. It was a tremendous success,” commented Walmsley.

Each day the kids arrived to camp, they were greeted by Chantal Morais, Registered Dietitian, or Sherrill-Lee Hyra, Health Promotion Coordinator, who work with Prairie

Mountain Health’s Health Promotion Team. The morning was filled with learning about cooking and eating in Canada. A partnership with the local CO-OP grocery store had kids going on their very own “grocery store scavenger hunt” learning about local fruits and veggies and other Manitoba food products while building their knowledge on how to stock a healthy pantry and learning some smart shopping tips.

With kids consuming many of their daily calories from sugar sweetened beverages, discussions were also focussed on where sugar is found in foods and building their awareness about the importance of drinking water as their next beverage of choice. Learning

new breakfast ideas and the importance of this meal was also a part of the learning.

Even a farm tour at the Guillas Family Farm was built into the day-camp, so kids began to understand where food comes from.

Kids were also building their food skills by reading recipes and preparing a variety of healthy foods, which served as their lunchtime meal. In the afternoons, local community facilitators along with, Settlement Services Summer Youth Program student, Jeasela Gutierrez, had kids moving and participating in a variety of fun recreation

first-time, newcomers camp came together for the children, from the participation of the local grocer, farmer, the support received from the Arts Forward staff where the camp was hosted, Prairie Mountain Health support, all the community members who helped with the activities, the funding available, and all the families that had their children at camp each day, stated Walmsley. “It was something I hope the children remember as one of their highlights this summer and something that we can offer again next year!”

Rotary District Governor Peter Neufeldt has been a Rotarian for almost 40 years. Based out of the Regina Eastview Rotary Club,Neufeldt addressed the Neepawa Rotary Club noon meeting on Wednesday, August 9. He spoke on the theme of Rotary making a difference focusing on six Rotary themes, namely, humanitarian services, water & sanitation, disease prevention & treatment, maternal health, basic education & literacy.

Neufeldt said, “School bus loads of kids die every day around the world due to unsanitary water.” That sobering statistic is the kind of thing that motivates him and Rotarians to reach out and make a difference.

through their Ripple Effect Program and an example of such a project began with Rotary Club of Winnipeg West building one school in Guatema la.

Neufeldt said, “Since 2000 there have been 80 schools constructed or renovated.

This has led to improvements in water & sanitation and economic development around those schools.

It has led to partnerships with local government and businesses.”

A not her world-w ide initiative of Rotary has been the push to eliminate polio. That push has been very successful. Neufeldt said that a few years ago, “There were 1000 cases of polio reported per day and now there has only been 8 cases reported so far this year.” Reportedly only there are three countries in the world that still have a polio problem and they are Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

This year Canada is celebrating 150 years since confederation (The Sesquicentennial). I thought I would spend the next several months showcasing some historic recipes in Canada’s honour.

Infantile paralysis, or polio, had been around for many years, but in the early 1950s a polio epidemic broke out in Canada. With almost 9,000 cases and 500 deaths, Manitoba was the hardest hit of any province. In one Winnipeg hospital, 72 iron lungs operated continuously to keep patients alive. It took some time for a vaccine to be developed and produced, but Canada’s Dr. Jonas Salk did succeed. By 1965, polio incidence was almost zero in the developed world.

In the early 1950s a local group of Anglican ladies “The Evening Branch of the Women’s Auxiliary” was involved in church and community work. This faithful group of women sold carnations for Mother’s Day, catered to banquets, held rummage sales and did various other work to raise money. Discipleship in action, they supported the church, Children’s Aid, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army Red Shield among other things. At Beautiful Plains Museum, there is a cook book with some of their favourite recipes, published in 1954. Local merchants advertised in the cookbook and the ladies requested in numerous places that readers patronize the advertisers in their book. There were no 10 digit phone numbers in those days. At Neepawa Groceries, owned by Reg Williams, the number was 97.

I will share several of their recipes and perhaps you will remember these family names.

Yorkshire steak dinner – Mrs. D. Bennet 1 lb. minced beef steak, brown in skillet 1/2 onion chopped fine 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 1 cup milk 7/8 cup flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt Combine meat, onion, poultry seasoning and salt.

Put it in a very hot oven at 400° and heat it. Beat egg, add the rest of the ingredients and beat one minute.

Pour over hot meat and bake at 400° for 30 minutes.

This is the store that Reg Williams owned named “Williams Tom Boy Neepawa Grocery.” Back then, telephone numbers were only two digits long and the phone number for this Neepawa Grocery store was 97. This store was located on Mountain Avenue. In 1967, the store moved to its current location, at the corner of Mountain Avenue and Hamilton Street.

Savoury canned beets – Mrs. W. Greenhalgh 3 Tbsp. minced onion 6 Tbsp. butter 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1 Tbsp. white sugar 1/4 tsp. cloves 3 Tbsp. vinegar 4 cups chopped canned beets Sauté the onion in butter in a sauce pan until tender.

Add the salt, sugar, cloves and vinegar and cook 5 minutes.

Add the beets, stir and heat well.

Afternoon tea cakes—Mrs. P. Murray 2/3 cup Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk 2 cups coconut 1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries 1/2 cup chopped dates 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Mix milk, coconut, cherries, dates and walnuts.

Drop by spoonfuls on greased baking sheets. Bake in moderately hot oven (350°) for 12 minutes or until brown. Remove from oven at once.

Broad, regional support for soybean plant

Continued from page 2 Along with NADCO, Russell-Binscarth and Carberry have also joined WOLG. “The community endorsement and financial support provided by these communities are welcome additions and clear signs of regional support to attract a soybean processing facility,” said Redfern, adding, “In a very short while, we have mobilized significant community support. Russell–Binscarth, Carberry and the Neepawa Area Development Corporation joining our group demonstrates there is significant interest and willingness to do business together to attract a soybean facil-

ity.” Redfern added that to date, they have received funding commitments of nearly $150,000, which can be used to leverage additional support from more senior levels of government.

Stuart Olmstead, Carberry’s mayor and their representative on the WOLG board, said about their decision, “We have a track record of attracting major investment to our community that fits with its key strategic assets, namely high quality agricultural production supported by the additional resources of our aquifer… We look forward to working with the other communities that are involved in this process,

and ultimately talking directly to companies about the benefits of establishing in Carberry. The grass roots effort of WOLG with the community based process is the best way to attract this scale of major investment to Manitoba. Collectively we can make this happen by working hand in hand with our partners to benefit us all.”

The three new partners will join existing members, Brandon and Virden. As well, Redfern explained,“We have established an important long-term relationship with Brandon University and its Rural Development Institute (RDI) to support delivery of the project and

bring their wide network of experts to validate the opportunity. The significance cannot be understated, as they are providing ongoing support through RDI and providing leadership on the WOLG Board.”

is working towards having the proposal package, including a recommended site, complete within about two years. “We want to

be right,” she said, adding that they also don’t want to take too long and run the risk that a new plant is constructed elsewhere.

Reviving some rural traditions

Elliot McDonald is an experienced hog farmer and he’s only 11 years old.

Four years ago, he started with five weanling pigs and fed them through to market weight. This year, he has 15 and several of his mostly black pigs are ready to go to slaughter. McDonald has a list of customers and he may need a few more this year.

McDona ld buys his weanlings in the spring from a farmer who owns a number of sows. The weanlings are fed outdoors in a huge enclosure. Fresh water is provided constantly and the pre-mixed feed is

purchased at Minnagro in Minnedosa.

Not satisfied to just be the guy who feeds the pigs, McDonald works on a part-time, volunteer basis at Minnagro. “I have helped mix feed and stock shelves and do a bit of computer work,” He said.

The hogs are processed at Oak River and Gladstone and then the cut, wrapped and frozen meat is delivered to customers. Last year, McDonald set aside some money for this year’s operation, but he also set aside money to tithe to the church he and his family attend.

If there is profit this year, some of the money may go towards a shotgun, as

he also likes to hunt. Last year’s hog adventure took a strange turn that keen eyed readers of the Banner classified ads may have noticed. Several of his hogs made a break for the open prairie and were on the loose for two weeks. They were eventually located, rounded up and returned to a reinforced pen.

Asked how he views his hog rearing project he said, “I guess I would call it a profitable hobby.”

Elliot has seven brothers and sisters who all live on a 3,200 acre grain farm south-east of Minnedosa, with their parents Neil and Larissa McDonald and Neil’s mom, Beth.

Athletica Sport Systems, based out of Waterloo, ON, has been working with the Yellowhead staff on the installation of the new arena boards and seamless glass. Pictured: The arena boards are the new style of flexible board system which provides more give when a player hits them. This variety of boards have been mandated for both the National and American Hockey Leagues. The next work slated for the Yellowhead will be the installation of the new multisided centre ice score clock. This season’s work is part of a multi-year upgrade program at the Yellowhead.

Though recent on-field results weren’t what the Neepawa Cubs were hoping for, the accolades the team and its supporters received away from the diamond surpassed their wildest expectations. The club recently hosted the Manitoba Baseball Senior ‘AA’ Championship, a weekend tournament which features eight of the best squads from across the province. A pair of Santa Clara League clubs participated; the Neepawa Cubs (host club) and Portage Padres (2017 pennant champions). As well, teams from Winnipeg, Brandon and a variety of other communities converged upon the Land of Plenty for this premier event. When it was all said and done, it was the Boissevain Centennials, of the South West Baseball League, who claimed the provincial crown, defeating the Morden Mohawks 4-3 in the final on Sunday, Aug. 13. The victory was even sweeter for Boissevain, as this was the last season for three of their veteran players, including player/coach Corey Billaney. After the final game, Billaney noted that this was just an awesome way to cap things off.

“I just can’t say enough about this team. These young players are a great group of guys and have so much talent,” noted Billaney, before being doused by his teammates in the traditional post-game Gatorade bath celebration.

“It’s so sweet to go out on top. I’m very thankful to be a part of this team. [The veteran players] told the guys that they just need to get a taste of winning and continue it so they know what it feels like. This now is a young group of players. This now is an unbelievable, young, talented group. I can’t stress enough how nice it is to see all this potential.”

As for Neepawa’s game results, the Cubs closed out the round robin with a 1-2 record and finished just out of playoff contention. The team won their first game, an 8-1 triumph over Springfield Braves on Friday. The following day, Neepawa dropped a 3-0 decision to the Oak River Dodgers and then lost 2-1 to the Pilot Mound Pilots, in what was an extremely close contest. Cubs player/coach Scott Newton said while there’s obviously a bit of disappointment that they didn’t win it all, there were some positive takeaways.

end on Saturday night, but the boys laid it all out there.

Our pitching and defense were pretty stingy, only giving up a combined six runs in three games, most weekends that would win us a couple games and get us into Sunday, but with this level of competition, it just didn’t work out.”

Meanwhile, in the stands, every single game was able to draw a solid fan turnout. Newton said the fan support the whole weekend was tremendous.

“I was expecting to see lots of people out for our games but I was pleasantly surprised how many people were there for the whole weekend, just wanting to watch some good baseball,” stated Newton. “It really did feel like baseball was more alive in Neepawa last weekend than it has been in a lot of years. It was great to see and hopefully we can continue the momentum.”

Ensuring the weekend was successful didn’t happen without a lot of help. A large number of volunteers aided in many different ways from working the gates to post game field maintenance. Newton, along with Rodney White and Landon Cameron assisted in the pre-event organization of those individuals. Cameron said everyone did an exceptional job.

Neepawa Novas on the move

The Neepawa Novas Gymnastics Club are jumping for joy over their new home, as the club has agreed to a new three-year rental agreement with the Yellowhead Centre. The contract will see the Novas move all their training and recreational classes into the Yellowhead Hall in midSeptember. As well, the club’s major competition of the season, a Western Manitoba qualifier for the Manitoba Games, will also take place at the Yellowhead in Januar y. The Novas had previously held events at the gymnasium at Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute (NACI).

Novas chairperson Michelle Gibson said this deal, which has been in the works

for quite some time, assists the club by providing more flexibility in scheduling.

“To prepare for the move, the club has had to coordinate coaches and schedule the various class times to facilitate the additional hours that we will be able to operate. We’ve also had significant capital expenditures for new equipment and a storage trailer that will house our equipment outside of the Yellowhead Centre,” noted Gibson. “We are excited to be able to offer more training time for our competitive athletes and have an expanded range of options for our recreational classes, including some daytime programs.

We also hope to improve our boys program with specialized equipment and attract some newcomers to

gymnastics during an open gym time.”

Gibson added that these changes and improvements are able to move ahead without a significant increase to their program fees. Reg istrat ions for upcoming classes will be available at the fall registration night on Aug, 31, while competitive classes at the Yellowhead Hall will

begin on Monday, Sept.

11 at 5:00 pm. The first recreational classes will start on Sept. 18. The class schedule will be Monday Thursday evenings, including some daytime classes on Tuesday mornings. Questions about the club can be directed to their email at neepawagymnastics@ hotmail.com.

“When it came to the weekend itself, Rodney White and Scott Newton and all the volunteers ran this thing and they did a fantastic job. The people of Neepawa should really be proud of themselves,” exclaimed Cameron.

Baseball Manitoba representative Richard Lochhead echoed those sentiments, adding that Neepawa will be a hard act to follow.

“Neepawa just did an amazing job. The volunteer numbers were great and really were the most impressive part of the whole weekend. Most communities have trouble getting the numbers, but here, there was a waiting list of people ready to do whatever was needed. It was really exceptional. Well organized and well done,” said Lochhead. “It was a solid weekend of baseball we saw out there. Many of the games were close, with some exciting finishes. What was good to see, as well, was the number of people out to see it. Neepawa showed up to support it, but there were also fans from other communities here, coming out to cheer on their clubs. It’s really good for the communities represented here. The weather was nice throughout the weekend, the crowds were energized and into the games. Neepawa should be proud of this.”

Visitation is at the home of Alvin & Selinda Bauman on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 1:00-4:30 pm and 6:008:00 pm. Private Family Service at the home on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 9:00 am, then to the Westbourne Mennonite Church at 9:30 am for burial at the adjoining Cemetery, followed by a public service.

Glen Richard Wagler Glen Richard Wagler of Eden, MB peacefully entered the presence of his Lord on August 9, 2017 after ten months on the cancer trail.

Glen was born October 10, 1947 in Shakespeare, Ontario to Emerson and Magdalene Wagler.

On August 8, 1970, he married Elizabeth Cressman. One year later, they moved to British Columbia, where they were involved in church planting for twelve years. They relocated to the Saskatoon, SK area, where Glen erected many farm sheds across the province and then operated a lawn maintenance business with the help of his sons.

His missionary vision took them to Belize, where they lived and served the Lord in a Mayan Indian village for ten years. In his spare time, Glen enjoyed working with the exotic hardwoods there, creating many pieces of furniture for the villagers and turning out wooden pens for gifts.

Since their return to Canada in 2015, Glen enjoyed being with the family and working in his shop.

He was predeceased by his father Emerson Wagler, father-in-law Howard Cressman and one grandson, Travis Bauman. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wagler; children, Rodney and Roxanne Wagler of Polonia MB, Sherry and Leslie Gingrich of Mine Centre, ON, Valerie and Gerald Bauman of Plum Coulee, MB, Bradley and Angela Wagler of Westlock, AB, Joshua and Mary Wagler of Mountain Road, MB, and Beverly and Phil Plett of Chater, MB; twenty one grandchildren; his mother, Magdalene Wagler and mother-in-law, Gladys Cressman, both of New Hamburg, ON; also remembered by brother and sisters, Sharon and Chuck Sammut of Cobourg ,ON, Gerald and Donna Jantzi of Milbank, ON, Gerry and Susie Wagler of Shakespeare, ON, Ron and Kay Shantz of St. Clements, ON; brothers and sisters-in-law Roy and Miriam Biehn of Hawkesville, ON, Evelyn Cressman, Paul and Lauralee Cressman, Steve and Elaine Cressman, Brian and Jewel Cressman all of New Hamburg, ON. The office manager is a part-time position (minimum 24 hours/week) and reports to the management team.

The office manager is responsible for producing the program schedule and setting up the playback system.

The office manager will be coordinating and arranging for the camera volunteers, the videography/editing volunteers in the main studio, at the Yellowhead Centre Studio and on-site video shoots.

The manager needs to have basic computer skills. Duties include basic bookkeeping, making deposits, writing cheques and invoicing.

Monthly financial reports must be prepared for the board of directors and attend the monthly board meetings and for the management team; Some governmental reporting is required. The manager will be responsible for keeping the video archives (DVDs) organized and up to date.

Must be good with the public, able to work on their own as well as with the NACTV team.

Some retail sales of videos are involved.

Henry Lepp: A tale of seven Chevelles

At the age of 14, Henry Lepp fell in love with a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle. It’s a love affair that’s lasted for more than half a century.

Lepp, of Rivers, co-founded Rivers-based Springland Mfg. in1985 and still coowns the company today.

He also has an organic farm north west of Rivers and a machine shop on his farm, from which he runs Baseline Performance, a company specializing in bespoke rebuilding of vintage engines, with his business partner Roy Cruz. He also runs several drag racing events per year at the Baseline Dragway, with his partner Bev Wrightson and team of volunteers. He also has an interesting collection of classic 1960s and 1970s Chevrolets. I asked Henry about this collection.

Where did your interest in cars come from?

The Chevrolet Chevelle

The Chevrolet Chevelle was a mid-sized car produced over three generations, between 1964 and 1978. It was a contemporary rival to the Ford Fairlane and Plymouth Belvedere and was available with a series of in-line six cylinder and V8 engines. Based on the GM A-body platform, the Chevelle was available in sedan, coupe, convertible, station wagon and pickup (El Camino) body styles, with some production taking place in Oshawa, Ont. and Sainte-Therese, Que. Higher-end models were also badged as Malibus in Canada, which is the nameplate that took over in 1978 and still exists to this day as Chevrolet’s midsize sedan offering.

his love for vintage GM cars possibly stemmed from his father, who owned a succession of GM vehicles during Henry’s childhood, including a 1951 Pontiac, 1960 Pontiac and 1966 Chevrolet Bel Air. What was your first car?

Henry fell in love with the shape of the 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle at age 14 and bought his first car, a red 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle, two door hardtop coupe with a 4.6 litre V8 (283 cu in) small block motor. It was bought locally in Rivers,

in 1974 for $1,200. He ran this as his daily driver until 1980, when he bought his first truck. He still owns this car and it’s currently under restoration, where he plans to put a 327 cu in small-block V8 in it and take it drag racing.

What attracted you to the Chevrolet Chevelle?

Firstly, the shape of the 1965 model, but also that it was a fully-framed car, so very stiff for a car of its time, thanks to coil springs and a four-link rear suspension, a feature usually only

reserved for race cars at the time. Rivals, including the more overtly sporting Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, were still using leaf springs. The Chevelle also offered a very smooth ride. The 1970 Chevelle SS with the 454 cu in LS6 motor with 450 horsepower, also held the accolade of the most powerful production car on sale in its day, making it somewhat of an icon amongst muscle car enthusiasts.

What other cars do you have in your collection?

A red 1965 Chevelle coupe that is undergoing restoration and for which Henry plans to fit a bigblock Chevy V8 and take it drag racing and a very rare 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS Z16 two door coupe with a 396 cu in (6.5 litre) big-block V8 and 375 horsepower, which he purchased in 2013.

This is one of only 201 cars ever made and features the

convertible’s boxed frame, a narrowed rear axle and brakes from the full-size Impala, heavy-duty suspension, hydraulic valve lifters, a Muncie wide-ratio fourspeed manual transmission and a full complement of comfort and convenience features. Due to its rarity and tip-top condition, this is probably the most valuable car in Henry’s collection.

The first is a red 1970 Chevelle SS Coupe manual, with a 350 horsepower, 396 cu in big-block V8, identical to the one that Tom Cruise races through the streets of Pittsburgh in the 2012 movie “Jack Reacher”. Henry acquired it from Neepawa in 1986 and restored it to its current condition, before selling it and then buying it back a year later! There is also a green 1970 Chevelle SS convertible with a 360 horsepower, 454 cu in motor and automatic transmission, purchased fully-restored in 2014, and a blue 1972 Chevelle Convertible currently undergoing restoration, which he has owned since 1998.

The final car currently in his collection is a red 1966 Chevy II SS, which he added earlier this year. The Chevy II was a compact car that later became known as the Nova.

This one has a small block 283, putting out around 220 horsepower and built to stock racing standards. It has a 5.57 rear axle and in its first outing this year, it managed a 7.5 second eighth mile, which is pretty quick for its class.

What other vehicles do you own?

All the vehicles that run are used fairly regularly in the summer, but Henry also owns two 1990s Chevrolet/GMC half-ton trucks as farm vehicles and two one ton diesel GMC Sierra pickup trucks (one current and one previous generation) that he uses for each of his businesses.

Henry also races a dragster with his partner Bev Wrightson.

The one that got away…

Henry has only ever sold one of his cars, his second Chevelle, a yellow 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, bought in 1980 with a 396 cu in big-block V8. Fortunately, it didn’t go far, as he sold it to his younger brother and co-owner of Springland Mfg, Herman Lepp, as his first car. Herman still owns that car and it has since been repainted in blue metallic.

Do any modern cars appeal to you?

Ford and Chevrolet will sell you a race-spec Mustang/ Camaro for around $150,000. These are very fast but only intended for drag racing, so therefore not street-legal.

Do you like any other cars from other manufacturers?

Henry also liked the 1960s Ford Fairlanes, 1969 Dodge

Dart and 1970s Dodge Challengers and Plymouth Barricudas, but the Chevelles are still his all-time favourites.

Are there any other cars that you would like to add to your collection?

Henry says that seven cars is probably enough to deal with at the moment but if he was to add another car to the collection, a yellow 1965 Chevelle, with the rare 327 cu in small-block V8 would be nice.

The next Baseline Dragway event will be the season finale. It will take place at Rivers Air Base Sept. 23-24.
