de Groot confirms re-election bid Seeking a second term as Neepawa mayor

Adrian de Groot is very pleased with the progress that’s been made in Neepawa over the past four years.

He’s hoping to stick around for the next four years to see just how it all plays out.

Earlier this week, the incumbent mayor of Neepawa confirmed that he will seek a second term in this fall’s municipal election.

“With May 1 being the day that nominations open up for the heads of council, I wanted to get an early start on this as possible and ensure that the community was aware that I will be seeking re-election this October,” stated de Groot.

“The primary reason for seeking re-election is that there are a number of projects ongoing in Neepawa, that have great importance for the future of the community. Those projects have made some tremendous progress over the past four years, through the hard work of the current council, administration and myself.

I feel that keeping the same leadership at this key point of local development will

ensure Neepawa’s ongoing growth as a sub-regional centre for commerce and business.”

Work with others After serving as a councillor in the City of Thompson for 27 years, de Groot won in the mayoral election in Neepawa in 2014 and has represented the community for the past four years. He believes that wealth of experience is exactly what is needed to continue guiding Neepawa down the right path.

“That’s what I think I have brought to the table, is the past experience. For 30 plus years, I have served as a municipal councillor and I love it and I’m excited about it. As well, that 30 years has allowed me to establish relationships with many other officials, from all levels of government and departments. They still know me on a first name basis and I still know them. Having that type of rapport can be invaluable,” de Groot said. “[Those other representatives] understand that I’m a straight shooter. I don’t start beating people around the head. You know [for

example] when we didn’t get the full funding for the force main sewer project, I didn’t go and start wailing or start complaining publicly. I just quietly talked to certain individuals. I was asked ‘How’s our project coming?’ from the feds. I said ‘Well, you know what? We’ll have a pipe in the ground, but we won’t get anything through it and it won’t go anywhere.’ I explained it’s a $3.3 million project and we have $1.1 million, so we’re $2.2 million short. The reply was ‘Well that doesn’t sound right. I thought we

did that all.’ Well, not quite.

So, the next day, we get that all straightened out.

Two weeks later, we got the remainder of the $2.2 million. Don’t have to go on the radio or in the papers and cry about it. We just did it.”

Long-term vision De Groot has expressed satisfaction with the direction that Neepawa has taken over the past few years. He noted there has

been progress on several fronts, including the development of the new firehall, the CN property and the waterline to the R.M. of Rosedale.

For the future, de Groot said that there are still some things that need to be solidified in Neepawa, such as the longterm housing strateg y.

He suggested examining a complex issue like that could take many forms, whether it be through a housing committee or the examination of the zoning bylaws.

Though housing was one topic cited during de Groot’s conversation with the Banner & Press, he was quick to note that he believes this will not be a one issue election. With Neepawa evolving as it has over the past four years, the issues have evolved as well. De Groot concluded that he believes he is the right person to help guide the community through that evolution.

“I’m committed to what

I do and try to do the best I can. And I’ll take the tough conversations; I won’t run from them or shy away from them,” said de Groot. “We have a good commitment from our administration and it’s a good time to be a part of it. The buzz that you hear from other departments is that Neepawa is a growing community.

There’s a focus on us and I’m proud to be a part of that. I’m an advocate for our community and will continue to do so if the voters let me.”

Neepawa Area Collegiate HOPE Group (Helping Our World Pursue Equality) in partnership with the Neepawa Rotary Club has a new project coming straight to your doorstep, and we need your help!

The pur pose of this new spring food drive is to collect current highneed food items for the Neepawa Salvation Army.

This food drive is different than any other food drive that we’ve done in the past. On May 10, HOPE and Rotary members will be leaving grocery bags on every doorknob in the community.

We need everyone in the community’s help with this project. When you receive a bag on your doorknob, please take it inside and fill it with some of the items we are collecting.

We are looking for: canned vegetables, canned fruit,

canned meat, small packages of f lour and sugar, rice, coffee, jam, peanut butter, soda crackers; and school snacks such as cookies and granola bars.

Biggest scam of the century

C

anadians, and Manitobans as well, are about to be subjected to the biggest scam ever foisted upon us. It’s called the carbon tax.

The Canadian government is imposing a carbon tax. As our local MP Bob Sopuck and MP Pierre Poilievre have pointed out, the government isn’t saying how much the tax is expected to bring in or where it will be spent. I think everyone can guess where it will be spent and that is the blackhole of government spending that has typified governments of the past few decades. God knows, they wouldn’t want to balance the budget, service the debt or actually curb spending. It is reported that a family taking in $85,000 per year pays 45 per cent in taxes of all kinds. That is scarily close to half their income.

The Manitoba PC-Pallister government had the opportunity to fight the carbon tax but instead implemented their own version.

Now they are in a fight with the feds as to who has jurisdiction and who has the best tax. That’s funny really.

What Manitoba should have done, and still should do, is align with our sister province, Saskatchewan, and fight the carbon tax. With elections coming up in Alberta, it’s almost certain that they will fight the federal carbon tax. Election results aren’t quite as predictable in Ontario, but if the Ford Conservatives win this spring, in that huge province, they will likely add their voice to the anti-carbon tax chorus. No federal government can retreat to the western and eastern extremities of the electoral base and survive a fight or an election, so Manitoba is key to this carbon tax debate and they have gone the wrong direction.

Ken Waddell One has to wonder why Manitoba went with the $25 per tonne tax. I think it is a way of facing the fact that they can’t finance every thing they believe Manitobans want or need. Maybe it is to keep the promise to reduce the PST. Don’t know for sure.

What I do know for sure is that, in spite of some of the cuts that have been made, there may have to be more made. Sad to say, but I can’t see how Manitoba can have as many small town hospitals as we now have. Many of the smaller hospitals have lost ER, surgery, maternity and acute care, so are they really hospitals anyway? The province is hiring more paramedics and that may well spell the end of several smaller facilities that are still trying to maintain the hospital title.

Past provincial governments have been tempted to close smaller schools, but that shouldn’t happen. As long as school buildings are in reasonable shape and there are students in a community, distance education methods should be implemented to a greater degree.

The current Manitoba government is looking at reducing red tape. Generally, they are on the right track, but maybe there is more that could be done. Why do we have provincial and federal meat inspection? Why aren’t the

standards based on product quality instead of the level of finishing materials in the facility?

Why do we have both a federal and a provincial level of department of Agriculture? Why does the federal government have anything to do with health, education or natural resources? It wasn’t supposed to be that way in the beginning.

The basic problem is that all new governments “say” they are going to make major changes and logically, they could. However, they quickly run into objections from unions, from media, from unrealistic people and slowly slide into the time-worn rut of governments past.

We have yet to see what a truly progressive government could do to make Canada reach its potential. I feel Manitoba needs to take a stronger stand on many issues as we link arms with our provinces on each side to keep Canada strong.

Get rid of the carbon tax, reduce useless regulations, abolish all business subsidies (especially to the CBC), including newspaper mailing subsidies (This paper doesn’t receive any mailing subsidy). The plain truth is that we spend way too much on government at all levels and the only saving grace is that we don’t get all the government we pay for.

urns out, improving the skills of Manitoba students isn’t as easy as A-B-C. This week, the results of the 2016 Pan-Canadian Assessment (PCAP) of reading, science and math were released, and students and educators in this province got some good news and some bad. While Manitoba students’ skills have improved, they still lag behind those in other provinces.

The PCAP is a national stan- MY dard ized test PERSPECTIVE a d m i n i s t er e d by the Council of Ministers of Education, CanKate ada. The test is given every three Jackman-Atkinson years to a random sample of 30,000 Grade 8 students across the country. Because curriculum varies from province to province, the test focuses on the core areas of reading, science and math. It’s designed to determine if students in different provinces achieve the same level of proficiency at the same time. In addition to the test results, the assessment also includes a questionnaire to collect “contextual information”. This includes questions about demographics, socioeconomic factors and teaching and learning conditions, which can help interpret results. The first test was conducted in the spring of 2007. The testing program is designed to help provincial education ministries monitor and assess their educational systems.

Each time the test is administered, one of the three areas is chosen as the focus, or primary domain, while the other two subject areas are the minor domains. For the 2016 test, the focus was on reading.

Within the primary domain, there are subdomains, which cover a range of skills. For example, in reading, subdomains include understanding texts, interpreting texts, responding personally to texts and responding critically to texts. Students’ results were split into three levels: as expected, below expected and above expected.

The good news it that across Canada, 88 per cent of students read at expected or above expected levels. With Manitoba, the problems fall at either end of the spectrum. While 74 per cent of students’ skills fell into the “as expected” category, compared to the 73 per cent Canadian average, Manitoba had one of the highest rates of those performing worse than expected and one of lowest rates of those performing better than expected. When you combined results of students performing at or above expectations, Manitoba students fall below the Canadian average. Looking a little deeper, Manitoba students performed below the Canadian average in all four reading sub-domains.

The good news is that between 2010 and 2016, the reading skills of Manitoba students did improve. But so did those of Canadians students as a whole. Manitoba also fell below the Canadian mean in mathematics and science, though there has been an improvement in both science and mathematics proficiency since they were the major domains. Overall, English language students performed better than French language students and girls performed better than boys.

Over the past decade, initiatives including smaller class sizes, basic arithmetic for young children and a focus on early years math and science have come into effect. While many of them are too recent to have had much of an impact on these test takers, the next PCAP, planned for 2019, should show the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Canadian students perform well compared to those in other developed countries and that applies to Manitoba students as well.

But these skill gaps have important implications. At the lowest level, students show a limited understanding of texts, provide a limited understanding of what’s described in a text, use limited evidence to support a stated viewpoint and can only provide vague critical responses. These skills; the ability to communicate and the ability to reason effectively, are all extremely import throughout life, on both a personal and professional level. Without an active response, these shortfalls will persist throughout a student’s education and can impact the doors that are open to them, and those that are closed.

The day the world changed

A

p r i l 2 8 , 19 9 9 was the day Rev. Dale Lang’s world changed forever.

It started with a phone call. The message was short: “Jason (Lang’s 17 year old son) has been shot.” As Lang would later share: “I didn’t ask any questions. I didn’t need to.

I knew it was serious.” It was, in fact, very serious.

Jason subsequently died from his wounds.

The shooting that cost Jason Lang his life took place at W. R. Myers High School in Taber, Alberta.

It came roughly two weeks after the school shootings in Columbine, Colorado that left 12 dead and 21 injured. “This,” as one observer put it, “was a Columbine-style copycat High School shooting by an angry, bullied boy.”

How sad. How very, very sad.

Lang’s response to his son’s death earned him the title of a national hero. His first act was to publicly forgive the shooter. “My family and I felt we had to,” Lang said. “That’s what Jesus asks us to do.”

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein The day of Jason’s funeral began with a public memorial service in the Myers School gym. It was open to students, staff, community members and national media. After a few opening speeches, Dale Lang came to the podium. With Bible in hand, he talked about the love of God, the power of forgiveness and the need for all people to feel loved, accepted and forgiven.

He didn’t preach. He just spoke as a grieving dad to a grieving community.

Then he did something that hadn’t been done in an Alberta public school for years. He looked at the assembled multitude and said: “Folks, we are going to take back our school.”

He asked his family and a few others to join him at the place where Jason died and they offered a prayer, calling on God to cleanse

the school of the evil that had caused this tragedy and make W. R. Myers School a place where every student felt welcome, safe and secure.

Nineteen years have passed since Jason Lang’s death. But his father’s words mean as much today as they did back then—especially in the wake of the senseless killing of 10 pedestrians on a busy street in downtown Toronto. We can only imagine what’s going through the minds of the victims’ families— the shock and grief they feel and the questions they have—questions for which there may never be any answers.

There is, however, one question that we must keep asking until we find an answer—“What must we do to keep tragedies like the ones in Humboldt and Toronto from happening

again?”

Dale Lang’s words can help us here. Nineteen years ago, he urged students and staff in W. R. Myers High School to take back their school. Since then, he has devoted his time and energy to helping people across Canada who have experienced similar tragedies take back their lives and not let the things they endured determine what they do with their remaining years on earth.

As I pondered the impact of the Toronto tragedy, I asked myself two questions. First, what has our society lost that is contributing to the carelessness we show in our activities and in our treatment of others? Second, how do we take back what we have lost so that, with God’s help, we can build a world in which people love, accept and forgive others as we have been loved, accepted and forgiven by God? Step One requires us to look deep within ourselves. That will be the subject of next week’s column.

My little yellow stone

t was a natural reaction. I saw a pretty, shining, stone and I picked it up and tucked it in my pocket. Its yellow gleam caught my eye and triggered a multitude of memories.

•When my youngest child was but a wee lass, she loved ‘frowin tones’, throwing stones off any one of the three bridges that were all within easy walking distance from our farm home.

Her love for stones never faded. Boxes full of her rocks were moved from the farm to the acreage, and if I look

HOMEBODIES Rita Friesen carefully, some even came into town with me. Moving day from farm to acreage, her older brother would approach me and ask if the box of rocks needed to be moved. Assured that indeed they did, with a puzzled tone he would reply – they’re rocks, mom. And I would simply say – they are Rilla’s rocks. And so another box was packed in the truck. Big ones, small ones, polished ones and rough ones. I love that image. A young girl’s hobby and the respect it earned.

•The grandchildren loved throwing stones as well.

There was the year we – the extended family- went to Souris. As well as the chil-

dren terrorising me when they insisted on swinging the Swinging Bridge, we spent hours at the rock pit. Some fine fossils were found, and everyone, all seven grandchildren, had a great time. We concluded that outing with a stop at the rock shop in town. The kids had a wonderful time, seeing the various rocks that can be found in our province. As is my wont, I used the time to teach, explaining more than they really wanted to know, but very hands on. As we were leaving the proprietor drew me aside and asked which school we represented, he was so impressed with the excellent behavior of the

students. I assured him we were family, not a class on an outing. He was impressed.

I love that image. Seven children under the age of eleven, all co-operative and obedient, and fun.

•For a Sunday School lesson we used a rock polisher.

Each child was invited to bring a favourite small stone and we would, over the course of five weeks, see it transformed into a shiny, beautiful keepsake.

We had a story to go with each stage of the refining process. What I recall most vividly is a young lad who did not want to relinquish his precious rough stone.

There were tears until I assured him I had an extra he could use, and he could keep his. I love that image.

My heart is troubled. We have lost many lives this past month through accidents and willful destruction. And with many others I say “why?” Young people’s lives were cut short. Moms and Dads lost part of their family. It is heartbreaking. Some are still in hospital and may be scarred for life.

I do not really have the answer. Are we as a society drifting away from God and His guidance and direction?

Maybe. Are we more tolerant and accepting of the ways of this world? Maybe. When I look around I see churches that are less than half full. Have we lost interest in the things of God? Is this a wake-up call for all of us? Maybe.

When I search the Scriptures I find that it is never too late to seek the Lord and He will be found. In the Psalms David often tells us to “Seek the Lord, and His strength, seek His face forever” (Psalms 104:5)) In Luke 12:31 we read “for rather seek ye the kingdom of God …...”

A recycling rebuttal

RE: Apr. 27 ‘Right in the centre – Recycling business in big trouble in Manitoba’ article The following is written in response to Ken Waddell’s editorial published on Friday, April 27, 2018 in the Neepawa Banner & Press and Rivers Banner.

About 93 per cent of Manitobans have easy access to a residential recycling program funded by Multi‐ Material Stewardship Manitoba Inc. (MMSM), an industry‐funded, not‐for‐profit organization. MMSM represents stewards — brand owners, producers, distributors and manufacturers — who pay fees to help cover the costs of recycling their products and packaging. MMSM is not a government agency. MMSM collects fees from stewards and pays for up to 80 per cent of residential recycling programs in municipalities across the province. Since it was launched in April 2010, MMSM has provided more than $80 million to Manitoba municipalities. In that same time, Manitobans have diverted 645,146,816 kg (645,146 tonnes) from landfill. Municipal recycling services payments are paid for each metric tonne of eligible printed paper and packaging material recovered from the residential recycling stream. Municipalities either provide the service themselves, or contract it out. All materials recovered are transported to recycling facilities where they are sorted and sold to end users. Without MMSM funding, municipalities would be responsible for 100 per cent of their residential recycling costs, versus the roughly 20% municipalities pay today.

The recovery rates of materials are determined by the amount of residential recycling material collected and reported to MMSM by municipalities, versus the amount of material generated and supplied into the residential system by stewards. Municipalities report collected material weights on a quarterly basis to MMSM. Recovery rates vary by material.

Unfortunately, some of the comments in this article are inaccurate. The beverage container program and the two cent container recycling fee is collected and administered by the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA), not MMSM. The funds are collected by CBCRA and used to fund its share of the blue box costs, away‐from‐home and public space recycling programs related to beverage containers through the Recycle Everywhere Program.

Ballot count takes centre stage in the Valley In Lennox Valley, election nights were generally drab affairs, with tight results a rarity. Usually, the good folks of the Valley booted the old mayor out with the same lackluster fanfare used to welcome the new leader into office.

However, 1998 was no ordinary year, and like so many other things, the mayoral election didn’t go according to script. If it wasn’t enough the Valley was split between a fairly respected incumbent and the town celebrity, Juliet Stoughton’s lastminute entree into the campaign created enough drama for two episodes of “Murder, She Wrote.”

Heated debates made their way to dinner tables. Wives slept separately from husbands, pastors ignored the campaign for fear of controversy, and there was a general uneasiness which didn’t befit the small-town friendliness for which our small town was known.

Traditionally, a handful of Valley residents were on hand to witness the counting of ballots at the Town Hall. Our Town Hall wasn’t like the palatial governmental buildings in larger cities. It included a small reception room with four seats rarely used, the mayor’s office, the office of the chief of police and Assembly Hall, where Valley Council meetings were held each month. Tightly packed, the room might have accommodated 100 people. It hadn’t dawned on anyone that most Valley residents would show up to see the ballots counted.

Hall under the watchful eye of the precinct election coordinator and two Valley Council members. As the coordinators approached the building, you’d have thought they were carrying precious jewels as the crowd silenced in awe.

Once the boxes were safely inside the building, Chief of Police Buford Dibble appeared in front of the entrance with his bullhorn.

“Citizens of Lennox Valley,” he began. “In an attempt to maintain control during the ballot count, we will allow only 100 persons into Town Hall to view the proceedings.”

“Who decides who gets in?” barked Marvin Walsh, local egg farmer and Raymond Cooper supporter.

Chief Dibble continued, “Each adult will be given a piece of paper with a number on it. We will call out numbers until we have reached the limit of 100 in the room.”

“Does that include the people counting the ballots?” shouted Elbert Lee Jones.

A hushed conversation took place between Dibble and the Valley election coordinator, Vera Pinrod.

Manitoba’s worst roads unveiled Brookdale’s PR 353 makes top ten

Manitobans have voted and they’ve said it loud and clear: Empress Street in Winnipeg is the worst road in the province. Empress f inished in f ifth place in the overall ranking in 2017. In total, seven of the top ten worst roads are in Winnipeg.

Provincial Road 450 in Boissevain claimed the second worst spot across the province. Like Empress, PR 450 has been on CAA list for several years and the recent scale back on funding for provincial roads means highways like PR 450 may have to keep waiting to be repaired. Provincial road 353 in Brookdale also made the list again this year, in ninth position.

Along with the top ten list, CAA Manitoba also unveiled the 10 worst roads in rural areas and in Westman. Notable results from the Westman survey included Minnedosa’s Main Street S. ranking f ifth, as well as f ive different Brandon streets making the top ten.

Voters chose their picks for the worst roads based on potholes, crumbling pavement and safety concerns. Over 6,000 votes were cast for nearly 700 roads around the province.

Farmers and agricultural equipment operators need to ensure all machinery is equipped w it h proper l ight i ng, signage and ref lectors when travelling on roadways, as required by The Highway Traff ic Act. it is also important that they ensure lights, signage and ref lectors are v isible and clean and use a pilot vehicle when transporting oversized agricultural equipment. it’s suggested that moving equipment dur ing the day on secondar y r o a d s w he ne v er p o s sible is the best option.

1988: Kaspick’s win big at the Windfall Dance

80 years ago Tuesday, May 3, 1938 The familiar figure of William Sheen with pipe, bicycle and a pack under his arm on his way to and from the hospital will be seen no more. He has retired from the rigorous routine of hospital staff life after 18 years of service as caretaker at the local institution, completing his duties Saturday night. He will now be free to come and go as he pleases and enjoy his well earned permanent vacation.

70 years ago Thursday, May 6, 1948 Flood swollen waters of the Little Saskatchewan River broke through the Minnedosa dam early Tuesday evening releasing a wall of water that swept through the central part of the town tearing out 800 feet of the CPR right of way and inundating the main street, flooding stores and homes. Sections of sidewalk were torn up 3 blocks away from the river channel.

One hundred yards of the dam washed out, leaving only a stream coursing through the empty lake bed. Railway repair crews went into action immediately following the flood.

Upwards of 100 trucks and several hundred men, commencing on Saturday, worked 24 hours a day to save the structure. Trucks

60 years ago Friday, May 2, 1958 Thirty eight members of the Neepawa Squadron No. 9 Royal Canadian Air Cadets journeyed to Shilo Wednesday afternoon. The local cadets were to have experienced a jump from the parachute practice tower at Shilo but strong winds forced cancellation of this part of the program.

However, they were able to inspect the various installations at the big military centre and all reported a most interesting and enjoyable time.

50 years ago Friday, May 3, 1968 The Neepawa Fire Department started out this week on a busy note, answering a call on each of the first three days of the week. On Monday, about 5 p.m., the trucks were called to a grass fire which had ignited the fence on the west side of the CNR tracks. It was quickly brought under control. Tuesday morning, a call came from the farm of Phillip Kuharski where an outhouse was destroyed. On Wednesday, shortly after 6

p.m., a grass fire at the E. Barron farm spread into fruit trees near the house and threatened the residence before it was brought under control.

40 years ago Thursday, May 4, 1978 Enthusiasm, dedication and guts - those are just a few of the words used to describe Manitoba Pool Elevator president Jim Deveson at a dinner held in this honour last weekend. Close to 200 friends, family and fellow workers gathered at Jim’s home base of Arden, to pay tribute to his work in the farm industry and offer the best wishes for his term in office as Manitoba Pool president. This marks Jim Deveson’s 22nd year as a member of the Pool organization.

30 years ago Tuesday, May 3, 1988 It’s difficult to imagine an event where everyone comes out a winner, but such was the case last Saturday at the 10th annual Neepawa Kinsmen Club’s Windfall Dance.

The Kinsmen, Kinettes and K-40’s came away with a sense of accomplishment, the people attending all received an evening of entertainment and prizes, but the biggest winner was the Touchwood Park Association, even though Evelyn and Henry Kaspick won the $1,000 draw. Touchwood was declared the beneficiary of the dance’s proceeds,

The Manitoba Public Utilities Board (PUB) approved a 3.6 per cent average increase to Manitoba Hydro electricity rates for 2018/2019, effective June 1, 2018.

PUB remains concerned about bill affordability for Manitoba consumers, therefore recommends the Province assume responsibility for the development of bill affordability programs to assist lower-income customers. PUB recommends that a portion of the Province’s revenue collected from the Keeyask generating station fund the bill affordability programs.

Additionally, PUB recommends that the government transfer some revenues from the carbon tax to Manitoba Hydro to lower potential future electricity rate increases.

PUB ordered the creation of a new First Nation On-Reserve Residential Customer Class. This customer class will not receive an increase in electricity rates in 2018.

PUB recommends the Province suspend the collection of approximately $900 million of government

revenues from Bipole III over the next 13 years. This amount represents the approximate costs of locating the Bipole III transmission line from the east side of Lake Winnipeg to the west side of Lake Manitoba.

These additional Bipole III costs should not be the responsibility of Manitoba Hydro ratepayers.

PUB recommends Manitoba Hydro reduce its spending on energy efficiency programs. Some current energy efficiency programs may not be economic and should not be pursued except for programs that assist lower-income customers.

10 years ago Monday, May 5, 2008 The newest history book has gone to print and will

be available to the public in July. The official launch of the book is planned for the 125 homecoming at the Yellowhead Hall on July 16.

The book included over 700 family histories, plus businesses, organizations and services, churches, schools, sports and other interesting features for close to 800 pages. Only 1,000 books will be published and 762 have been pre-sold.

Neepawa-Gladstone Co-op reports to members

Following is a summarized version of the reports delivered on May 19 to the co-op annual meetng.

The local Co-op is a vibrant member of many local business communities. They are members of Federated Co-op Ltd.and together they create employment for over 24,500 people in Western Canada, in over 500 communities in 2,500 locations.

FCL had sales of $9.8 billion and earnings increased from $439 million to $590 million in 2017 due to energy pricing and margins in western Canada.

On the local level, 2017 was a good year as sales reached $78.5 million which was up from last year’s $74.2 million due to increased market share. Local saving was at $791,000 and our net savings after patronage was $3.3 million last year.

The Neepawa Home Centre won the “Home Centre Excellence” award for the province.

Petroleum sales at both locations were significantly higher than expected. Car wash sales continued to increase in 2017. The automatic car wash in Neepawa is nearing completion with plans to be open in the next few weeks.

The Bulk Petroleum department sales and litres increased nicely this past year.

Agro Division sales were above budget at both locations and stronger margins generated positive bottom line results. The addition of several NH3 trucks helped to service a very strong NH3 fall and fertilizer sales were significantly up.

The purchase of land east of Neepawa has allowed the co-op to start moving the Agro facilities out of town. The new seed treating plant should be operational shortly. The new office, chemical shed and dry storage shed will be completed by this summer.

Two “Made in Manitoba” musicians are completing their western Canada tour with a show at Neepawa’s Art & Soul Artisan’s Loft on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. Kevin Roy and Logan McKillop are both established solo artists who often collaborate with other musicians. They toured together last year for a few weeks and are back together again.

Kevin’s latest album, Heartworn Highways, is true to his country/folk roots. His inspiration for music is from the likes of Hank Williams, Neil Young, and Corb Lund. He is also a professional photographer and will bring some of his work for display/sale. Logan is a songwriter/

guitarist and storyteller from the small town of Onanole, MB. He has toured Canada from coast to cost and is a sought-after accompanist and recording artist. In 2013 he released his debut album, Prairie Sky, a 20 song collection of original tunes.

The Art & Soul Artisan’s Loft is one of the businesses located in the former Neepawa Press building. As well as being an artists cooperative, the “Loft” was recently the live music venue for the NACTV Showcase.

The area is visually interesting, cosy, and has the comfortable feel of a house concert venue. As the bonus, the acoustics in this historic building are perfect for live music.

The concert will be run like a house concert in that all money collected at the door goes directly to the performers. Admission is $20 per person.

Bird Sanctuary receives support Cheque presentation made during Neepawa Community Expo

Neepawa’s Bird Sanctuary has received an extra bit of local support. On Wednesday, Apr. 25, representatives with the Neepawa Wildlife Association (NWA) presented a cheque for $2,000 to the Sanctuary. The presentation was made at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall #23 building, during the Neepawa Community Expo.

Perry Snedden of the NWA, said they have been supportive of the bird sanctuary ever since it was first established, back in 2000.

“A facility like this is very special and we’ve always been helping and very supportive. This year, we heard of a problem with the heating system and decided that as a group, the [NWA] would help out with a donation.

Because [the bird sanctuary] is a really good venue to have in a community such as ours.”

stated Snedden.

Bird Santuary board member Brenda Ferguson said that they are appreciative of this unexpected support.

“When they phoned me and informed us that they wanted to support the Santuary this way, I was so overwhelmed. They have always supported us in the past, but certainly, we never expected to receive a donation of this amount. It’s going to help considerably.”

The bird sanctuary first opened in 2000 through the efforts of the Neepawa Rotary Club and Neepawa Wildlife Association. It is operated through a core committee and volunteers, who work together to look after the repairs and upgrades. Over the course of nearly two decades in operation, it’s become a well rrgarded attraction for Neepawa, drawing in visitors both locally and from across the province.

Csversko receives Sport Manitoba award

Manitoba’s best coaches were recently recognized for their leadership and a familiar local name was amongst those that were honoured. John Csversko of Neepawa recently received the Global News Active for Life Award at the 2018 Coaching Manitoba Impact Awards in Winnipeg. Csversko was recognized for his dedication and contributions to the sport of curling. He has been involved with coaching for well over 30 years, including a 15 year stint with the Terry Ursel rink. In total, six coaches in a variety of sports were singled out for their outstanding achievements, with Csversko being the only non-Winnipeg based coach to be recognized this year.

Jeff Hnatiuk, President and CEO of Sport Manitoba, said the awards are designed to acknowledge the contributions a coach has made to his or her sport and athletes over a number of years.

“Coaches teach, develop, and shape the future of amateur sport. It’s our honour to celebrate these community leaders and their tireless, outstanding contributions over their careers,” stressed Hnatiuk.

Csversko was surprised and humbled by the recognition, noting that it’s not something that he got involved in coaching for.

“I’m not one who searches for the spotlight in this way. I’d rather give the attention to the players, who’s hard work and skill end up making me look good. Usually even better than what I’ve contributed,” Csversko stated, with a chuckle. “I’m grateful for the recognition from Sport Manitoba, but the real reward from all this

is seeing players I coached all those years ago, passing on the knowledge. They’ve moved on and started coaching the next generations. That’s a real pleasure to see them helping others on down the road.”

Along with the Coaching Manitoba Impact Awards, Sport Manitoba also handed out the hardware during the annual Night of Champions. Notable award winners included CFL running back Andrew Harris of Winnipeg winning Male Athlete of the Year and Olympic hockey player Brigette Lacquette of Dauphin receiving Female Athlete award. The team of the year prize was given to the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball club, who won their second straight American Association Championship in 2017.

Neepawa Golf & Country Club opens for the season

The recent cool temperatures aren’t expected to chill the enthusiasm of local golfers who are finally getting back out on the greens. The Neepawa Golf & Country Club (NGCC) has confirmed it will open for the season on Thursday, May. 3.

As of Tuesday, May 1, it was expected that all 18 holes would be available for play heading into the weekend.

NGCC general manager/CPGA golf pro Landon Cameron said some late season snowfall combined with colder than normal temperatures did slow down their preparations for the new year, but that they were able to work around it. “[The weather] backed us up a bit. We’re probably three weeks behind right now, compared to where

we were last year. That being said, it’s good moisture for the ground to get going. Any moisture in the spring is good moisture,” said Cameron. “Everybody is itching to get out there and get going. It’s a weather dependent business. You are at mother nature’s mercy and she’s not really been cooperating with us yet this spring.

But, hopefully, we’ll get going here shortly and have a successful year.”

Cameron noted that staff and grounds crew at the Neepawa Golf & Country Club have done a tremendous job dealing with the weather and ensuring the course, as well as the clubhouse, are ready to go. He added that club members are excited to get back out on the course and hopefully start enjoying a few rounds with some warmer weather to go along with it.

The view is better from the Ridgeline The original Honda Ridgeline was introduced to the North American market for the 2006 model year and remained in production until 2014. It was intended as an alternative take on the more traditional mid-size trucks offered by the likes of Ford, GM, Dodge, Nissan and Toyota for those loyal to the Honda brand or those requiring some truck-style utility combined with a more refined, car-like driving experience. Featuring a transverse-mounted V6 engine, a unibody chassis and independent rear suspension, it was largely rejected by traditional truck buyers but thanks to these attributes and its chunky, distinctive styling featuring rear buttresses, it developed a bit of a cult following and a very loyal customer base.

After a two-year hiatus, Honda is back with a new Ridgeline featuring more conventional truck-like styling to give it a broader appeal but still remaining true to the ethos of the original and retaining the attributes that made the original so loved by its owners. So, does the relaunched Ridgeline achieve what it set out to do successfully?

(all one piece rather than a separate frame), and weighing in at a smidge over two tonnes, it is significantly lighter than most of its rivals, so actually feels pretty lively and the transmission is very responsive. There are no paddles to override manually but there is a button on the shifter to raise the revs if you need more power for towing. One feature that confused me a little was that the “N” for neutral on the shifter gate was illuminated leading me to believe that I was in neutral when in fact, a glance at the dash display confirmed that I was in “Drive”! Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, which is down on other mid-size trucks, but for most users this will be ample.

Ridgeline also features a new all-wheel drive system with intelligent variable torque management. Being based on the Honda Pilot SUV, this system is typically biased to the front wheels but in the blink of an eye can redistribute torque to the wheel with the most grip.

This means that understeer is virtually non-existent and traction total. Ridgeline is also exceptionally refined at a cruise making it very relaxing to drive and the adaptive cruise control as standard on all models works really well.

Powertrain A ll Ridgelines come with a 3.5 litre V6 24-valve gasoline engine featuring direct injection and Honda VTEC putting out 280 horsepower and 262 poundfeet of torque at 4,700 revs per minute through a six-speed torque convertor automatic transmission.

This compares favourably with rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier and, although the torque figure is a little lower, remember that Ridgeline has a unibody construction

Handling and ride Thanks to its light weight, compact dimensions, low centre of gravity courtesy of the unibody construction and the aforementioned variable torque management, Ridgeline feels exceptionally wieldy with sharp and precise steering, more akin to a sporty SUV. Thanks to its multi-link rear suspension, Ridgeline also doesn’t bounce over bumps when unladen like its leaf-spring equipped rivals.

Despite the front-biased all-wheel drive system being unusual for a truck, Ridgeline doesn’t feel noticeably different in terms of handling to a conventional rear-biased four-by-four truck. If the front end does eventually loose grip, you can power up the rear axle and slide the rear, as you would in any other truck and it’s very unintimidating and controllable.

Obituary Susan Mae Schettler Susan Mae Schettler, known by all as Mae, was born August 17, 1939 in the Molesworth district. Mom was one of 9 children born to Percy & Dorothy Squires. She married Arnold Schettler on August 18, 1956 at the United Church in Glenella. Mom and Dad enjoyed 60 wonderful years of marriage together living on the family farm in the Grass River district.

On April 25, 2018 Heaven gained a very precious Gem… at the time of Mom’s passing she was at the Neepawa Hospital with family by her side.

Mom leaves behind her family, sons Doug (Pam), Blaine (Sharon) and daughter Bonny Soper; grandchildren from oldest to youngest Nathan (Nicole) Schettler, Lois Schettler, Zachery Schettler (Alyssa), Alyssa (Tyson) Guenther, Cody (Sarah) Schettler, Lyndon Soper (Melanie) and Katlyn (Myron) Enns; great granddaughters Aryn Schettler, Emma Schettler and Sophie Schettler; one sister Irene Lambourne as well as many precious nieces, nephews, good friends and sister by heart Shirley Katsky and very dear and close friend Ruby Walker.

In 2016 Mom lost her lifelong partner, Arnold, who was the love of her life. Throughout her years, Mom suffered many tragic losses but was never so deeply hurt as when her grandson Layne Soper died unexpectedly at the age of 8 years old and then some time later when she lost her infant great grandson Xavier Schettler.

Mom, as you carry on with your next journey in life, we thank you for all your Love, Understanding and Guidance.

Education is needed to make sure people know what to recycle,where to recycle and how to recycle.

Continued from page 17 One small bugbear is that the brake pedal feels a little “soft”. The brakes are powerful enough but the pedal is further down than you expect, and you have to push a bit harder than you might think. However, overall, it feels very stable and surefooted.

Styling Ex Forman-Honda salesman Don Ramsey of Rivers provided his lovely previous generation 2007 Ridgeline EX-L for comparison. The rear buttresses are gone meaning that the box is more conventional in its styling and whereas it looks separate, it is actually still a part of the chassis. For this reason, it is more likely to have a broader appeal in terms of style than the previous Ridgeline. The cabin and front end is unmistakeably Honda Pilot but none the worse for that and overall the look is both smart and professional. Due to the unibody construction, there is only one bodystyle, a crew cab and only one box length (5 foot 4 inches).

Interior Honda have really nailed the interior quality on their latest generation of vehicles. All the plastics feel of high quality and all the buttons work with precision. The centre console is very roomy, both driver and passenger have adjustable armrests and the heated seats are very comfortable and also ventilated on the top-spec Touring tester model supplied by Forman Honda in Brandon. I also found the light grey interior very attractive and a nice contrast to the dark Obsidian Blue Pearl paintwork, and the blue ambient lighting very soothing. My only minor complaints regarding the interior are the excessive number of buttons, the fact that the tilt/telescope on the steering column is manually adjustable when everything else is powered and although the main displays are clear and work well, they remind me of the displays on my old 2013 Civic, so don’t appear to be the most state-of-the-art!

The rear seats flip up 60/40 and offer useful storage underneath and despite being shorter in length and wheelbase than its main mid-size competitors, Ridgeline manages to offer superior head, leg and shoulder room for five passengers. The ground clearance at 7.9 inches may be a little compromised for off-roading compared to other trucks but does mean ingress and egress is much easier, another benefit of the unibody design.

AGM Recap

The Annual General Meeting of the membership of Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. was held on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018 at the Neepawa Legion Hall.

Approximately 100 members were in attendance to enjoy the meal catered by the Neepawa Legion Ladies Auxiliary and participate in the business of the annual general meeting.

President Ron Jesson noted that the credit union had another profitable year in 2017 with assets growing to exceed $130 million and a net income of $624 thousand.

This was after providing for a patronage payment of $300 thousand for the year, bringing the total patronage payments to $4.04 million since BPCU started paying patronage to the membership.

Further information regarding the financial performance of Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. during the fiscal year ending December 31, 2017 was provided

by General Manager Gord Sylvester noting overall asset growth of 12.2% during the fiscal year to $130.3 million, with the loan portfolio maintained by Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. seeing growth of 19.7% during the fiscal year to $93.7 million. The member deposits held by BPCU grew by 12.5% to $118.7 million as at the fiscal year end. Overall this left Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. with equity as a percentage of assets at 8.19%.

President Jesson also took the time to recognize and thank the staff for their continued hard work and dedication both the Beautiful Plains Credit Union and the multitude of volunteer organizations that they serve. During the 2017 year the staff and management of BPCU accumulated in excess of 1000 hours of volunteer service collectively in the communities with live and work in.

Following the presentation of the financial statements, the nominating committee presented their report with respect to the filling of the vacant director positions for the Board of Directors of Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. This year there were 2 vacancies on the board of directors with the nomination process and any voting required being conducted prior to the annual meeting. During the nominating committee report it was noted that there were 2 applicants whom let their name stand for election, Ronald Jesson and Keith Jury, who were both the incumbents for the director positions that were up for election. No other candidates were nominated and thus Mr. Jesson and Mr. Jury were acclaimed to another 3 year term on the board of directors of Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. Following the completion of the election process presentations of services awards to directors and staff were completed. General Manager Gord Sylvester made a presentation to Marla Steen for 15 years of service with BPCU. President Ron Jesson then made a presentation to Greg McConnell for 25 years of service on the BPCU board of directors.

All of us at Beautiful Plains Credit Union Ltd. look forward to another successful year in 2018 with an eye to continuing to serve our membership with the highest of service levels.

I have been employed in the Financial Services industry for the past 20 plus years covering multiple positions including MSR, loans officer, and branch manager. I started my career in the financial services industry with BPCU as an MSR. Over the next 15 plus years I held multiple positions within the credit union and Chartered Financial Institution industry, returning to Beautiful Plains Credit Union in 2014 as the Loans Manager.

I was born and raised in the Neepawa area and continue to reside in the area today with my husband and 2 children, operating a grain farm.

Over the years in Neepawa, I have been a member of various community organizations such as the Neepawa Chamber of Commerce, the Neepawa Nursery School, Girl Guides, and Neepawa United Soccer.

Presently I sit on the boards of the Brookdale Parent Council and Touchwood Park Association.
