Jodie Byram wins in Agassiz

PC candidate prevails locally, while NDP win provincial majority

By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press

Election night was, perhaps, a touch bittersweet for Jodie Byram. While the first time candidate earned victory during the 43rd Manitoba General Election in Agassiz, her party, the Progressive Conservatives were ousted from power, with an NDP majority win. But no matter which political party is in charge down at the Legislature, Byram knows that her job remains unchanged; that being the voice of the riding, and of everyone who resides within it. After Byrams’ victory was confirmed, she spoke with the Banner & Press and noted that she is looking forward to having the honour of representing everyone within the constituency. “I’m honoured to have been elected by the people of Agassiz. You know, going out there and campaigning and talking to the people. I listened to the issues and the concerns that everybody brings forward, and I will bring those issues with me [to the Legislature],” stated Byram. “And it’s not just those who voted for me. I’m a representative of

A call for creativity from downtown Toronto has been heard and answered by a pair of artists who call Neepawa home. The work of Katy Martin and Meaghan Peters was recently selected for per ma nent d isplay at Scotiabank Arena, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors. They are amongst a handful of Canadian artists, whose creations will be located throughout the arena and feature themes related to the teams, fans and City of Toronto. The Martin/Peters collaboration is titled ‘Interlaced’ and is an interpretation of a vintage photo of George Armstrong, Todd Sloane and Dick Duff. That trio played together for the Leafs in the 1950s’ and were nicknamed the ‘Bread and Butter Line’. The painting will hang on the 200 level of Scotiabank Arena. The style of Martin and

Peter’s painting is a mixture of Euro-centric and Indigenous symbolism. Katy is a realism painter who works in oils, while Meaghan’s style works in acrylics and brightly coloured layered designs. The combinat ion of styles is a commentary on the different cultures moving forward together to create beautiful new stories, while honouring the contrasting experiences of their histories. The two concepts meshed, or perhaps we should say ‘Interlaced’, together nicely to create the final artwork. Individually each artist has already achieved notable success, as Martin’s work is very much been sought after by an array of collectors in Ontario, her original home province. Peters, as well, who is from northern Manitoba, has already had her art on display in Thompson, Leaf Rapids, Dauphin and Winnipeg. Continued on Page 7

1974: Arden Lucky Dollar owners win contest By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press

125 years ago, Saturday, January 7, 1899 As a means of reviving interest in the curling club competitions the executive has decided to abandon the allround play and substitute the draw and knock-out system. A gasoline engine has been added to the Press printing office outfit. It works like a charm, is 24 horse power and while running off the newspaper, it and a folding machine do in one hour and a half what it took four men three hours to do. Ours is a Hercules engine made in San Francisco and was supplied by the Toronto Type Foundry. Winnipeg. With all its thoroughly up to date appliances, the Press is now able to do double the amount of work it formerly could in a better manner and more expeditiously. Bring along the work.

100 years ago, Tuesday, January 1, 1924 A record of performance of Canadian hens for the past year shows two with 283 eggs to their credit and fifteen others with over 200. It is always a pleasure to note the progress of a boy or girl who at any time made their home in this town or district. The Winnipeg Free Press on Saturday contained a halftone of Crawford McMillan, now a bank manager there. This boy’s father was a clerk in Kennedy’s store; also in Tritt’s; and was employed by Jerry Robinson after going to Winnipeg. 75 years ago, Thursday, January 6, 1949 Earl Murray’s rink, which represented the Neepawa Cu rl i ng C lub i n t he provincial British Consols playdowns emerged as the winner of Group 12 in District 3, when the group competition was concluded here Wednesday night.

A n invest igat ion is underway into the exact cause of a fire at a barn located on the former Neepawa Food Processors property. Fire Department received a call at 5:48 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 4 about a structural fire on Dominion Road in Neepawa. Neepawa Fire Chief Yves Guillas said, “The building must have been burning for a while before the call came in as the roof and walls were basically gone when we arrived.” Gui l las added t hat there was some paperwork and egg crates within the building, but he was initially concerned if there were more dangerous materials involved. As for what may have caused the blaze, Guillas said, “It’s definitely being considered a suspicious fire and is being investigated.’ He concluded by stating if it was deliberately set, he is concerned about other incidents. Obituary Linda Jacqueline Mitchler

Linda Jacqueline Mitchler (nee Buffi) passed away peacefully with family by her side on December 13, 2023 at the Brandon Hospital. Linda was born on September 27, 1948 at the Neepawa Hospital, only child to Jacob and Emilie Buffi. She was baptized in October 1948, confirmed in August 1962, both at the Waldersee Lutheran Church. She attended the Lucania and Glenella schools. Following school years she lived and worked in Neepawa where she cleaned rooms and did accounting books for a few years before marrying Leonard Mitchler on May 11, 1968 and moving back to the Glenella area. Over 55 Years of marriage, Linda and Leonard had four sons Lawrence Leonard, Mark Cory, Duane Aaron, Noewel Darryl, daughter Holly Leanne and a stillborn daughter in 1976, Linda, Leonard and the family moved a few times farming in the Glenella area with moving one last time in 1976 to a farmstead they purchased near Glenella. Linda (mom) loved to be busy with her big garden, canning, cooking, tending to the animals – pigs, geese, chickens and milking cows. All Linda’s children have stories about being chased by the gander and the rooster. Luckily she took care of that one rooster, with one quick swing of a 5 gallon pail! She also had the important role of following behind the farm equipment to help Leonard and the boys move fields in seeding and harvest and delivering tailgate suppers. She was always doing something. In winters she would pass the time with hours of crocheting and sewing. She achieved her goal with crocheting a blanket for each of her grandchildren and Godchildren. A keepsake of her they will cherish forever. Mom was the most amazing cook. Every meal was a big meal with her cooking, always needing dessert and of course always having ice cream in the freezer. “Grab the pail and spoon, forget the dish!” she’d say. She passed this love of sweets and ice cream onto her family. She taught her children and grandchildren many lessons through her life – lots of baking, cooking and crocheting. She enjoyed clipping recipes out of the newspaper to pass onto the kids “This would be a good one to try!” Linda was very strong in her faith and served for many years with the church. From coordinating lunches, volunteers, to helping with Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. Linda didn’t know the words ‘retirement’ or ‘slow down’ and this shows with her being active in the church and on the farm right up until she suffered a severe stroke. She loved to help where she could and would do anything for anyone. She had a heart of gold. Linda is predeceased by her stillborn daughter, parents Jacob and Emilie Buffi, her father in law and mother in law Emanuel and Katherine Mitchler, brothers in law Edwin and Mervyn Mitchler. Left to mourn are her husband Leonard, sons Lawrence (Trena), Mark, Duane, Noewel and daughter Holly (Matthew). Grandchildren Devin (Kamrin), Bailey (Ryan), Emmalee, Matthew, Dustin, Chloe, Mylee, Kaytee and Caitlin. Sisters in law Beverley (Lloyd), Shirl and Laura. Brothers in law Delmar, Kelvin (Laurie), Howard (Susan), Dale. As well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her four-legged buddy, Hatchet. As we mourn, we can find comfort in something mom said often…’don’t say goodbye, that’s too final, say see you later.’ Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 2pm at the Waldersee Christ Lutheran Church, in Waldersee. Clarke’s Funeral Home Gladstone/MacGregor in care of arrangements

Remembrance Day: Letters to home By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press

Translation: “Very dear Mother, I received your airmail from 5 Oct. Saying that Therese has a little boy,but I haven’t received the telegram yet. I’m fine, not yet sick despite the humid temperature, since it’s almost always raining. I will send $25 to Therese for Christmas or New Year’s. I sent a letter yesterday but they are so slow(?). I don’t have any airmail forms therefore I will try it here and see how the time it takes. Well I hope the family is all well. And my best wishes to Therese and her son that he doesn’t grow like a weed/corn. Well, bye bye from your son who loves you xxx Bebe” See more from Wilf on Page B4 and B5

This Remembrance Day, the Neepawa Banner & Press is honoured to be able to feature some letters to home, written by individuals from the area who served in differing capacities. We begin the section with materials submitted by Lionel Boiteau. The late Wilfred “Wilf” Boiteau (pictured), father of Lionel Boiteau, grew up in Ste. Rose du Lac. However, he lived most of his life in McCreary, where he was the owner of Wilf’s Bakery. During the war, Ste. Rose had a cigarette club that sent cigarettes to the boys overseas– a common practice in those days. Advertisements from cigarette companies promoting this practice can even be found in the Neepawa Banner & Press archives! Wilf was the one who received these packages and acknowledged them. Working as a clerk, Wilf had access to a typewriter and thus was able to type letters/cards. Most letters were handwritten in French, his mother tongue. The following letter (also pictured) is one written to his mother, Bertha, at an unknown date. It has been parsed, transcribed and translated to the best of our ability, with assistance from Lionel: “Bien chere Mere, J’ai reçu votre airmail de 5 Oct.

Disclaimer: All of the letters and diary entries featured in this section have been printed as they were originally written. Some of these contents contain dated slang terms for groups of people. These terms and statements are attributed only to their original writer and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the Banner & Press or its staff.

Nov. 10, 2023: The former storage shed for Neepawa Food Processors (hatchery and chicken barns) was consumed by fire on Nov. 4. The building contained some old supplies, but wasn’t currently in use.

Section B & C Special Christmas Feature

Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling

By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press It feels as though the cost of everything has gone up over the last 12 to 18 months, and it’s not just you or I who are feeling the effects. Municipalities, such as the Town of Neepawa for example, are being impacted as well. Fortunately though, Neepawa has just received a bit of unexpected ‘inflation relief’ from the Province. In early December, Town administration received a letter from the office of Ian Bushie, the Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations. The correspondence stated that the community would be receiving $435,875 in infrastructure funding to help fund priorities, including inflation. That amount is Neepawa’s per capita share of a $39.9 million funding announcement that was made earlier this year. Continued on Page A2

While most of Neepawa already had a pretty good guess as to where our new vocational high school was to be located, any uncertainty to that answer was officially removed this week. In an email sent to Divisional staff on Wednesday, Nov. 22, Beautiful Plains School Division superintendent Jason Young conf irmed that an agreement has been reached for the purchase of 22 acres of land adjacent to the new Regional Hospital site. “We wanted to inform our leadership group that we now have a signed contract with the landowners, so although we continue to work through various components (zoning, traffic studies, geo-technical surveys, land surveys, environmental studies, water drainage, etc), we now have an identified piece of land for our future build,” stated Young in the email. The location of the new school has been a huge topic of discussion since it was first announced back in March. Many locals believed that land close to the new hospital site was the likeliest of locations for the facility. The Neepawa project is one of nine new schools that were announced by the Province back in March. It will be a Grade 9 to 12 vocational school and child-care centre within the Beautiful Plains School Division. The plan right now is for the facility to be constructed and operational by Sept, 2027.
