The future of the Riverside Cemetery’s Perpetual Care (PC) program, specifically the distribution and care of grave site flowers, was the focus of a public meeting on Thursday, June 28. Just over 100 people packed the backroom at the Neepawa Public Library to share their thoughts on the issue and how it should be operated moving forward.

The open house began with Mayor Adrian de Groot going over a PowerPoint presentation that outlined the numbers associated with the program and a definition of just what “perpetual care” actually is.

The province’s cemetery act defines “perpetual care” as, “the preservation, improvement, embellishment, and maintenance, in perpetuity and in a proper manner of lots, plots, tombs, monuments, or enclosures, in a cemetery or of compartments in a columbarium or mausoleum.” In Neepawa, however, a local bylaw

expands on that definition, stating that perpetual care can include an increased level of individual grave care and maintenance, including the annual planting and care of flowers on the grave.

time fee for this additional service is $1,500. It has been increased in recent years, as in 2014, the fee was just $843.31. When it first began in 1955, the one-time fee was $5.00.

total cost of $11,136.15. That amount excludes the time and labour costs required to plant the flowers and maintain them over the course of a season.

Rotary Club meets their Tree Planting Challenge Group’s planting project enhances community

By Ron Nordstrom Submitted The Neepawa Rotary Club has coordinated a second tree planting project in the Town of Neepawa. This completed their contribution to a Rotary International challenge to plant a tree for every Rotary Club member. A total of 15 Rotarians and students from Neepawa Collegiate combined efforts to plant 12 two meter high trees near the soccer fields at the area known as “the Flats” in Neepawa.

Last month 20 trees were planted along the Veterans Way walking path on the west side of Neepawa.

The tree planting project involved the Town of Neepawa, Whitemud Watershed Conservation District, and Peer Helpers and the Horticultural Club from Neepawa Collegiate. The town staff saved the planters a huge amount of work by digging the holes and having proper topsoil available to pack around the trees.

of trees were planted, including North America Linden, Ohio Buckeye, and Bur Oak. Last year, Rotary International President Ian Riseley, challenged every Rotary club to plant a tree

for each member. If the challenge was met, the result would be 1.2 million trees planted by Rotary.

Rotary clubs around the world have accepted the challenge and far more than 1.2 million trees have

been planted.

There are many reasons for us all to plant trees.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce greenhouse gases. They prevent flooding by protecting soil from

erosion and reducing surface run-off. They support agriculture by improving topsoil erosion and create shade and shelter for livestock. Trees and forests improve health and well being by reducing air pollution. Woodlands help keep cities cool and are perfect places to exercise.

Trees encourage wildlife, as they provide habitat for birds and small animals.

Trees also increase property value. They promote peace simply by giving people a place to sit in the shade and contemplate the world. Planting trees show a long-term commitment to the community, as the ones who benefit the most will be future generations.

The tree planting project was a lot of fun. It is always a good idea to partner with middle school and high school students as their energy and enthusiasm is contagious. The Neepawa Rotary Club would like to thank all the partners for helping to meet our tree planting challenge.

Final numbers for Walk for Alzheimer’s announced Submitted Neepawa Banner & Press

On Thursday, June 14, Neepawa held the “Walk for Alzheimer’s” at Country Meadows Personal Care home. Due to the rain, the walk was held indoors throughout the halls of the care home. It was a great evening with a great turnout still of 130+ in attendance. The event raised $3,200 for the Manitoba’s Alzheimer’s Society. The committee of Genie Barnaby, Jeannine Adriaansen, Judy Gabler, Leanne Harding, Trish Boersma and Marsha Forgue were very excited about the turnout. This year there was a team formed, Country Gals (as in picture). The team had a goal to raise more than $1,000 combined which they met and exceeded. The walk pledges and donations were amazing. Thank you to everyone for their generosity to such an important cause. The committee would like to thank Swamp Gas for their post walk entertainment that was enjoyed by everyone and to Hylife for the delicious ice cream treats. Thank you to Mary Porter and the Neepawa and District Handivan and to the McLarens for bringing the antique fire truck in case of better weather conditions,.

A big thank you to the Country Meadow’s staff, the families and friends, and the many volunteers of Country Meadows for their assistance to this event!

Their help ensured that 63 residents were also to be part of the community walk. The event will return to Neepawa in June 2019!

By Banner Staff Neepawa Banner & Press An author with a connection to Neepawa will be returning to the community as part of her upcoming book tour. Leigh Ann Edwards, the writer of the Irish Witch Series will be at ArtsForward Cultural Centre on Wednesday July 18.

As part of her “Places Close to My Heart” book tour, Edwards will be promoting her latest novel in this popular fantasy/historical romance series. She will also have signed copies of all seven installments of the series available to purchase.

The Irish Witch Series is a collection of books, set in mystical sixteenth century Ireland. A Witch’s Destiny is the latest installment, which was released in April.

Edwards lived in Neepawa from 1981-1989.

Random thoughts from the Canada Day long weekend

A

nu mber of t hought s crossed my mind over the long weekend and so I thought I would share them.

•How come we have so many different kinds of groups of rights?

There are dozens of groups claiming certain rights but I won’t name them as some would be offended they are included in the list and some would be offended if they were left off the list. Why can’t we just have human rights and leave it at that?

•Instead of chasing around after different groups’ rights, why don’t we just address the various injustices that exist? For example, why do some communities have clean drinking water and others don’t? Why do some students have good schools and some don’t?

Why are there huge discrepancies in the amount of money government puts into housing in urban areas as compared to rural and remote areas?

•How is it that political parties can hijack the political nomination process? And better yet, why would they want to do so? Why is it that local constituency associations are sometimes overruled on who can be their candidate? Isn’t that just plain wrong?

•Why is it that in the provincial legislature and the federal parliament that party member MLAs and MPs have to vote only along party lines. How can the leader (premier or prime minister) have the nerve to dictate to the members how to vote on items (other than the budget, perhaps)? What if a member wants to vote according to their conscience? What if a member knows full well that their constituency is against a piece of legislation? Should they not be allowed a free vote? •When people vote for a politician, they expect them to vote along with the majority of the constituency, or at the very least, according to their conscience.

They should expect nothing less but in many cases, the reality falls far short of the expectation.

•Why are so many people not casting votes? Is it because they feel it is useless? I wonder. No, I don’t wonder, I know. People figure it’s useless to vote because they feel nothing will change.

Maybe the parties want it that way, keep expectations low, keep voter turnout low and you can win government on 40 per cent of the votes cast. If only 50 per cent of the voters actually cast votes, you can then win an election by getting 20 per cent of the people out to vote. Pretty simple way to win an election isn’t it? Only have to convince two in 10 people to actually vote for you and you get elected.

•As I pondered over the Canada Day long weekend how fortunate we are in Canada, it also crossed my mind as to how fragile that fortune is. Our democracy is not nearly as vibrant or a strong as it once was. Many of our leaders can’t speak all that well. Some of them obviously can’t think very

well either. For many of them, we have no clue as to what they really believe. They develop policy by focus groups and on the fly. Policies have to keep the mainstream media happy or they will be trashed. If a policy doesn’t meet the accepted narrative of the CBC, it will be at best ignored or at worst ridiculed.

•Why do we send billions of dollars each year to Manitoba to prop up our poorly managed economy and many more billions of dollars to Quebec so they can have a cheap daycare and a propped up arts and cultural community?

•Why can Quebec and Alberta have privately run health clinics, diagnostic services and surgery and we can’t?

•Why, why, why?

The answer is simple, it is because we let them and we need to stomp our feet and lift Canada up to an even better position. Complacency is a bad thing and it is long past time when we should be getting more involved.

e all know the importance of small businesses to our economy, but what about the smallest of small? In the season of farmers markets and pop up shops, all of a sudden, we see the talent hiding in plain sight. The sewing, baking, crafting, painting, pott e r y, w o o d work i ng a nd MY anything you PERSPECTIVE can imagine, are all on display.

It feels like there’s a growing groundswell in favour of this type of hyper local shopping, driven by a combination of factors. In the past, buying things was expensive, so people made them out of financial necessity. For example, before growing affluence, cheap international labour and fast fashion, many Canadians made their own clothes because they couldn’t really afford to buy them. But it’s now been close to half a century of cheap and easily available retail clothing and handmade has come to signify quality and individuality more than financial need.

The same story holds true for many of the handmade items we purchase and I think part of the resurgence has to do with an increasing preference for quality over quantity. We are inundated with cheap products and many people look around their homes and see lots of stuff. Instead of buying more, buying quality products that offer a connection to the maker is an effective cure for retail overload.

You know your product was ethically made by someone who knew their customers would be friends and neighbours— that mindset puts a much greater emphasis on quality, safety and community.

Another factor is how much easier it now is for artisans to get their products to customers. In the past, they would have to attend events in person, try to get a retail location to carry their products or invest heavily in advertising. Today, those avenues are still open, but online retailing has allowed artisans to sell directly to customers across the country and around the world in a professional way, even if they aren’t that tech savvy. As well, an enthusiastic and devoted marketer can build up an international following for free, something that really wasn’t possible a decade or two ago.

When many of us go away, we seek out gift shops and artisans studios, why don’t we do this at home? Prince Edward Island has turned theirs into a major tourist attraction, with visitors touring and buying from independent shops and studios around the island.

There’s no reason why we can’t do that here, especially as more and more come into existence. This past week, I was able to visit four shops in Neepawa and Minnedosa that sold items made in Manitoba, most from within a 50 km radius. Each artisan, each shop, adds to the critical mass, making it more worthwhile for visitors from further afield to make the trek out. If PEI has managed to take artisans spread out across a mostly rural area and turn it into an internationally recognized tourist destination, we should be able to build upon what we have to turn it into at least a regional attraction.

There’s something supremely satisfying about buying from the person who made the product, either directly or at stores and coops selling the work of local people. Buying from these venues has become increasingly trendy in urban areas and it’s spreading to rural communities too. I hope to see this trend continue to gain steam, it can only be good for our region and the people who live here. The more local residents can make use of their skills and talents to support their families and themselves, the more we can offer to make ourselves a destination, regardless of where the customer is from.

Winter wonderland—in June

elieve it or not, that is what my front yard looked like a few weeks ago. It is dominated by three large poplar trees. They are owned and maintained by the Town of Neepawa.

Each year, Public Works staff stop by and trim off the new shoots that spring out from their trunks.

And about five years ago, they sent a team of professional “daredevils” who, using nothing but a safety line and climbing spikes, climbed up into the hearts of those trees and raised their crowns by several feet.

Needless to say, I am exceedingly grateful for the maintenance and care these threes receive. But there are two things that the Town of Neepawa staff can’t do. They can’t prevent roots from working their way through cracks in my sewer line and plugging it (which happens on occasions).

Nor can they stop these trees from dropping their fluff-coated seeds in my front yard.

That happened this year

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein and there were so many of them that my yard looked like it had just received about two inches of fresh snow. Two hours and seven lawn and leaf garbage bags later, most of the seeds had been cleaned up.

This is, by far, the most seeds I have picked up in the 12 years I’ve lived in this home. Last year, we had none to speak of. This year’s crop made up for it.

The elms in my back yard also dropped an extraordinarily large number of seeds. But in their defense, they were probably paying me back for the pruning they received last fall. Trees are funny that way—so I’ve observed.

Mother Nature has ways of reminding us of just how powerless we really are.

Any attempt to control her usually ends in failure. She

will do what she wants to do (as has been demonstrated time and again in this region) and sometimes the only option we have is to dive for cover and hope the damage she inflicts won’t be too severe.

Mother Nature is also very unpredictable. What starts out as a beautifully calm day can end with a violent thunder storm g iv ing us high w inds, massive amounts of rain, huge hail stones and the odd tornado; and causing millions of dollars in crop losses and property damage. Two hours later, after the storm has left, the winds have died down and the sunshine has returned, those in the storm’s path are left wondering how they will clean up the mess and repair the damage.

If there is one thing we

can learn from witnessing Mother Nature at her worst, it is that we must never take anything in this life for granted. What we have can be taken from us in the blink of an eye. A violent storm can destroy proper t y. A n accident can cause severe injury or death. And we all know how vulnerable we are to a sudden illness which can bring a sudden death.

There is only one thing about which we can be absolutely certain. We are not destined to live forever— here! God has something far better planned for us—a place in his eternal home where what torments us here will never be able to touch us again.

So while we live on this earth, we are to care for it and use its resources wisely.

We are to love, accept and forgive others as we have been loved, accepted and forgiven by God. And when life ends, we can say “good night” here, knowing that it will be “good morning” up there.

he hol iday was intended to be a time away from responsibilities and a time to recharge the spiritual batteries. The time on Iona did that wonderfully. The major presences on the island are the Iona Abbey and the ruins of a nunnery.

The abbey, constructed in the 1200s by the Benedictine order, and the nunnery around the same time by the Augustine order. Massive stone structures, serene and calming. The time on the isle did all that I had hoped for. As I mentioned from hell to heaven and then back to the real world.

Marie and I spent the better part of a week in Edinburgh, renting a lovely flat one block off the Royal Mile. Four flights up – good for the step counter! High on the list of impromptu stops are churches. While admiring St. Giles, a public announcement asked us all to leave as a wedding was

HOMEBODIES Rita Friesen to celebrated in the lovely cathedral. (we returned another day to complete our tour). Down a side street we found a small church, one honouring the Ste. Margaret Sinclair, a dedicated nun who died at an early age.

This was the one and only time we felt very uncomfortable. There were a half a dozen folks, sitting in quiet contemplation when a young woman walked purposefully in, flung her bagged lunch on the communion table and then hopped up, and sat there, staring at us defiantly as she tore into her sandwich, casually swinging her legs as she observed us. None of us sitting there spoke, I assume we were all tourists, and after an uncomfortable

few minutes, we slipped out.

If it had been my church, would I have spoken? I believe I would. Should I have?

Greyfriars Church was next and, of course, I stopped to rub the nose of the bronzed Scottie dog, Bobbie, who, legend has it, remained at his master’s grave site for some fourteen years, before passing away himself.

Music – an Irish Catholic marching band, well escorted, drums booming, pipes skirling, drew crowds.

In our walking we had discovered Canongate Church, lovely ancient structure, well used, and attended a concert presented by a young choir from Alabama. Acoustics incredible!

We spent a day in Edin-

burgh Castle. Crowds of people everywhere! Sat in for high tea, chose a quiet tea room rather than the lawn for the weather was warm.

Of all the sights and sounds on the hill, the military memorials moved me the most. The hall was silently reverent, no cameras allowed, and any conversation was in whispers. Reverence.

Books and books with the names of the fallen, including the Canadians. A young lad standing beside a grave, and the inscription-‘known only to God’, a moving seaman’s memorial – ‘ they have no other grave than the sea.’ A poem by Moina Miichael- ‘We shall Keep the Faith’ in response to ‘In Flanders Fields”, the section honouring the chaplains. So beautiful and so impactful.

Couldn’t leave the area without climbing Arthur’s Hill. I nearly made it to the top! Equal to 95 flights of stairs.

es, the summer holidays are here. Schools are finished and plans are made to get ready for this big camping trip. Or maybe now is the time to go to the cabin and get the rest you have been waiting for all these months. Maybe a big family reunion is on the schedule and preparations are made to get together. I still have such wonderful memories when my children organized a reunion to celebrate my birthday last year and all my children and their families were there. Precious memories. That’s how we build them.

However when we go away somewhere, let’s not forget to take Jesus with us. Have a Bible with us to strengthen us daily and give us support each day, one step at a time.

A digital app on our telephone does not take up extra space and we have it with us wherever we go, our life line with reality.

Have a safe, wonderful and blessed time this summer.

Is Cannabis Canada going to pot?

Health Canada has jurisdiction over licensing cannabis producers. So far about 100 entities have been licensed and the number is increasing. The dark side is that Health Canada is ill-equipped to scrutinize applicant financials. Thanks, and a tip of the hat, to Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu for doing some digging on our behalf, and Senator Nancy Raine (retired) for bringing it to my attention.

It turns out that some twenty of the licensed producers have investments from unnamed sources in foreign tax havens. The total foreign investment in the twenty-odd producers is about $165 million and of that about $150.7 million is out of the Cayman Islands. The amounts and sources may be far higher than those Senator Boisvenu was able to identify.

Although there is no proof that investments may be from laundered drug money or investments are being made to launder drug money, we need a financial audit of licensed producer investments to protect us from being duped by unscrupulous criminals, and changes to our legalization legislation to limit or prohibit investments from known tax havens.

Cannabis legalization is complex, not because simple legalization is all that difficult, but because our government has chosen to control the cannabis trade. That puts an onus on the government to properly screen license applicants including the sources of their funding. It appears our government has dropped the ball and failed to investigate funding of license applicants. They have opened the doors to criminal elements that include tax cheats hiding income from their governments.

This has all the earmarks of another scandal in the starting stages.

Who will it be?

It’s now or never for Raymond Cooper

The morning of “The Great Valley Runoff,” I listened at the breakfast table as my parents discussed their options while considering how they would cast their votes. I think my father, who sold books by day and repaired TVs in our basement at night, summed up how many good folks of the Valley felt when he said, “I’m not sure it’s worth the time it takes to vote.”

Raymond began “Renderings with Raymond” in earnest at 7:00 a.m., five hours earlier than usual. He kept saying something about his public duty to keep the town informed, but most folks realized he was trying to gain a few votes in an election that was getting closer by the minute.

“Silver Tongue” Dick Bland held a campaign rally on the town square at 8:00 a.m., hoping to influence any voters sitting on the fence. He kissed Christine Schmidt’s baby – noting it was quite possibly the most beautiful baby he had ever seen – and shook hands with the 40 or so folks in attendance, making his final attempt at convincing Juliet Stoughton’s adherents to follow her wishes and cast their ballots for him.

You would think the county fair, 11 miles away in Springfield, would cut into town activities. However, Caroline’s Beauty Salon and the Hoffbrau, both normally quiet on Thursdays, were hubs of activity. Most people, it seemed, were sick of the campaign, but weren’t sick of talking about it.

Raymond tried in vain to get Brother Jacob to offer a prayer during the show, but his minister was “extremely busy” with pastoral duties away from town all day.

Eventually, Cooper turned to his “Book of Famous Prayers,” offering up this petition, yet not revealing the words came from U.S. Gen. George Patton, “Graciously hearken to this soldier who calls upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, I may advance from victory, and crush the wickedness of my enemy and establish justice among men.”

Though Cooper was not a popular figure among the regulars at Caroline’s, most bowed as Raymond prayed.

“He may be a schmuck, but he does have a way with words,” Essie Kennemer noted.

Knowing folks on both sides of the political fence would be calling his show that day, Raymond asked Marvin Walsh to man the phone and determine which calls he had “time to take” on the air. At 6 p.m., Sarah Hyden-Smith, Iris Long and Juliet Stoughton monitored events from a booth at the ‘Brau, where they ordered supper and discussed the events of the day.

It was bound to be a smaller turnout at this week’s 7:00 p.m. ballot count, as Thursday night was “Wrestling Night” at the Spring County Fair.

This year promised an especially exciting show as stars from the past, including The Sheik, Joe LeDuc,

Gorilla Monsoon, and Ron Garvin, highlighted the card. By 7:00, barely 100 folks gathered in front of the Town Hall for the vote count. Chief Dibble announced, “Due to the smaller turnout this week, we will attempt to allow everyone inside the proceedings.” Then with a gruff voice added, “No chaos,” as the crowd

filed in.

Little did he know how prophetic his words would be.

Vera Pinrod, election coordinator, addressed the crowd. “Votes cast totalled 764.”

An audible mumble rose from the crowd. That was 170 fewer votes than were cast a week earlier. Could most of Juliet’s supporters have stayed home, refusing to support either remaining candidate?

“You’ve got this one in the bag, Raymond!” shouted Elbert Lee Jones from the rear corner of the room.

A quick stare from Chief Dibble stopped Jones in his tracks.

Silence overtook the room as Vera began her ballot count.

“Cooper!” she roared, looking at the first ballot. “Cooper!” she shouted again.

Pausing as she looked at the next ballot, she lowered her volume.

“Cooper,” she said.

Iris Long shook her head as she tallied the votes on her note pad. She realized this was going to be another long night.

Saskatoon tart

My garden saskatoon bushes are producing and I am enjoying their sweet flavourful berries. Wild saskatoon bushes can still be found across the prairies, however many people grow their own in backyard gardens or go to U-pick farms for their saskatoons. Mmmm—this tart is bursting with the fresh flavour of saskatoons!

Saskatoon tart 1 1/2 cups flour 1 cup finely chopped almonds 1/2 cup white sugar 2/3 cup cold butter

1 egg 4 cup saskatoons, divided 1 Tbsp. corn starch 2 Tbsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Combine the flour, almonds and sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender until crumbly. Mix in egg.

Press 1 1/2 cups of the dough mixture in an even layer in the bottom and up the sides of a lightly greased 10in. tart pan with removable bottom or spring form pan.

Take 2 cups of the saskatoons and crush them with the cornstarch, sugar and nutmeg. Spread mixture evenly onto the crust; scatter the remaining 2 cups of berries on top. Sprinkle the remaining topping over the berries.

Bake at 400° for 40-45 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned. Cool and remove from pan.

Charity race raises over $7,500 for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada

Gladstone man arrested for second degree murder

A Gladstone man has been charged with the murder of an Alberta woman. On Wednesday, June 27, the RCMP Historical Homicide Unit arrested 68-year-old Grant Arthur Sneesby in Edmonton and charged in relation to the death of Gloria Gladue.

Gladue was reported missing from Wabasca, Alberta in 2015. Her remains were recovered in rural Manitoba by the RCMP on June 17 of this year and were positively identified via the Office of the Medical Examiner in Winnipeg on June 26.

Sneesby has been charged with second degree murder and offering an indignity to her remains. He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in an Alberta courtroom on July 12.

It Takes Guts event a big success

It was another stellar year for the “It Takes Guts” barrel races in Neepawa as the event was able to raise $7,558.70 for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. The fifth annual races were held on Sunday, June 24 at the Agricultural Fair Grounds and featured 131 entries this year.

L or i Cat hcar t, who along with her daughter Erin, organized the festivities, told the Banner & Press that it’s ver y gratifying to see the level of support increasing year after year.

“To have 131 racers signed up this year, which is nearly 20 more than we had participate in 2016, is

very encouraging,” stated Cathcart. “[Crohn’s and Colitis] is on the rise across Canada, so getting the message out there and spreading awareness in this manner, as well as helping raise money for ongoing research is very important.”

C o - or g a n i z e r E r i n Cathcart, who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2012, said that she and her family were very happy with the amount of money they were able to raise during the course of the afternoon and over the past five years.

“We are so thankful for all of the sponsors, volunteers, competitors and spectators that helped to make this possible,” said Cathcart.

1988 : Faulkners celebrate 65th anniversary

80 years ago Tuesday, July 5, 1938 The annual memorial service of Neepawa Lodge I.O.O.F. and Anemone Rebekah lodge was held Sunday afternoon at the cemetery with fine weather favoring the event. Meeting at the cemetery gates, a procession was formed and led by the Salvation Army band marched to the ceremonial grounds. After the singing of the hymn Peace, Perfect Peace the recitals were read by Dr. J.R. Martin, N.G., for the Oddfellows and Mrs. W. Stewart for the Rebekahs.

J. Curtis, chaplain offered a prayer and the address was given by the Rev. Harry Wilson. Following the reading of the names of the departed members Abide with Me was sung.

The band played selections during the decoration of the graves.

70 years ago, Thursday, July 8, 1948 The Neepawa Dominion Day Sports under auspices of the Beautiful Plains Agricultural Society was a grand success again this year. The weather was ideal and every district, tow n, a nd v i l lage i n central Manitoba were represented. The Brandon Greys captured first money in the baseball tournament that featured that day.

More than 6,000 fans saw the power-packed Brandon club trim the Eden team in the f inal game 7-1.

Play i ng ma nager Ia n Lowe’s crew encountered little opposition and they shutout the Arden and Portage-Oakville clubs to advance to the final.

Steve Wylie, Brandon’s new colored star, pitched and won his second game of the day. Ray Kilburn, tall right-hander, was on the mound for Eden and went the distance against the heavy-hitting Greys.

Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Buchanan left by car last week for t he Ca lgar y Stampede.

Mrs. Raymond Western has arrived by air to visit Mrs. Western’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Ferg Irwin of Neepawa.

60 years ago Friday, July 4, 1958 One of the busiest of

the many busy spots in Neepawa this week is the Pioneer Museum in West Park School Auditorium.

A total of 590 visitors were recorded there on Monday alone.

And those who are going are coming away well pleased with what they see. A tremendous display of over 1,000 items fills the hall and the stage, and provides a thorough glimpse into the past.

There are pictures and clothes, furniture and implements, dishes and household items, and many others. Many have been heard to express regret at the little time available to them for browsing, for a thorough coverage of all the items would require many hours. All visitors seem to be highly impressed.

Credit for the work in preparing the displays should go to the ladies of 23 communities in the district, who called on the citizens of their districts for the antique items. The seven Women’s Institutes in the district, who were the original sponsors of the project, feel that it could never have achieved the scope it has without the help given by the ladies from the other 16 communities.

50 years ago Friday, July 5, 1968 A bridal shower was held June 22 in the recreation room of Franklin School to honor Dona White, whose marriage to Adrian Kolton will take place on July 6.

Dona, her mother Mrs. Francis White, and her f ut u re mot her-i n-law, Mrs. Nicholas Kolton of Winnipeg, were escorted to specia l cha irs and presented with corsages.

Over 70 people attended, including people from Winn ipeg, Gladstone, Neepawa , Ment more, Dauphin, Edna, Boissevain, Minnedosa, and Bethany.

by Group 2. The other contest, conducted by Mrs. W.J. Kitson, was won

by Mrs. Vera Hockin of Mentmore.

After Mrs. Roy Orr read a welcome letter to Dona, gifts were brought in by a decorated wagon drawn

by Dona’s two nieces, Suzanne and K ristine White of Dauphin. Dona

invited everyone to her trousseau tea on July 2.

Lunch was served by Group 2 of the UCW. Other special guests were Adrian’s sister, Connie Kolton, of Winnipeg; Mrs. Lyle Bryam (cousin) of Neepawa; and Mrs. Gerald White of Dauphin.

40 years ago Thursday, July 6, 1978 The Labatt’s Western Manitoba Inter-Club BestBall Golf League wound up at Shilo this last Monday, with the Brandon A team w i n n i n g t op honor s .

Neepawa placed third in the competition which began in late May. The Neepawa golfers played 14 games, with a grand total of 266.0 points, an average of 19.00.

Golf teams participating in the weekly play were from Brandon, Sh i lo, Minnedosa, K illarney, Boissevain and Neepawa.

Last week, in the final matches, the Neepawa team of Barry McLachlanMartin Taylor had a total of 8- while John Zeke-Bob Cummings scored 75. Zeke birdied on the fifth and fourteenth holes.

30 years ago Tuesday, July 5, 1988 F lossie a nd G eorge Faulkner will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on July 11, 1988. They were married in Nottingham, England on July 11, 1923 and honeymooned on the Cunard Line, “Caronia” over to Canada the same week. Taking up residence in Winnipeg, Mr. Faulkner worked for the CNR and several other construction firms prior to employment with the Winnipeg Electric Company as a joiner. He spent f ive years in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and served in Canada helping to establish aircraft repair depots in Australia, United States and from across Canada. Special thanks are extended to doctors White and Benning of Neepawa for caring and looking after their health needs.

Watershed Conservation Tree Train rolled into 10 community stations with freight cars full of trees over the past two weeks. Each day the train was met by a mob of green-thumbed towns people awaiting their package.

Freight included over 3,000 trees, with varieties including Scotch Pine, Blue Spruce, Villosa Lilac, Basswood, Poplar, Green Ash, and Mountain Ash. Just as Johnny Appleseed was busy in the 1880’s, the grade five students of the Whitemud Watershed district were busy planting their own apple trees.

T he Johnny Appleseed Prog ram, an environmental tree planting initiative, was welcomed into schools with bright eyes and great anticipation as each grade five received their five foot tree.

They not only went home with an apple tree and a smile, but they also took with them the skills and importance of tree planting.

As a promotional device for the lottery corporation, the screens will also display the amount that could be won in the next draw.

also have an automatic ticket checker which can be used by players. Currently, around half of the locations that sell tickets have the machines.

Two sides to Perpetual Care program debate Continued from page one As for the overall expenses of the cemetery, in 2017, its operation was pegged at $211,907, while its revenue, which is based on sales of lots/plots/niche’s and interments, was just $118,707. Those numbers show a one-year deficit of $93,200. That shortfall was made up through a portion of property owner’s tax bill.

Once de Groot completed this part of the presentation, he moved on to potential changes being considered to ensure the long-term viability of the cemetery. There were three options presented: Option one: Flowers continue (Existing only); Discontinue sale of grave site f lowers; Previously purchased grave f lowers will continue; Flowered lots would have six f lowers near the headstone; Labour and watering remain as-is Option two: Flowers continue with changes; Discontinue sale of grave site f lowers; Offer f lowerbed services - $250/year (subject to change); A year-byyear purchased service; All previous lots (new and grandfathered in) would have six f lowers.

Option three: Develop a park-like setting; Discontinue sale of grave site f lowers; Flowers reduced from 12 to 9 to 6, with 2020 the last year for f lowers on individual graves; Prepare and develop cemetery to maintain and expand the ‘park-like’ setting.

The estimated cost per year for option one would be $217,000, with the taxpayer share of the cost being $73,000. Option two’s estimated expense would also be $217,000, with taxpayer’s chipping in $72,000.

The third option would see the expenses estimated at around $86,000 per year, with the taxpayers cost being break even.

After going over the numbers, de Groot then indicated that an alternative needs to be found, as the town can no longer put the burden of a deficit on the current taxpayers or upon future residents to deal with at a later date.

Once the presentation was completed, the assembled citizens had their chance to have their say. Some in attendance expressed support for the town’s plans, while others were unhappy with the suggestion of changing

the deals that they or their families had previously agreed to. A few alternative options for reducing the cost were also brought forward.

At the end of the meeting, de Groot noted to the Banner & Press that he was pleased with the overall level of discussion, while heated at times, remained respectful.

“It was a fairly respectful session. Looking at the situation, looking at the circumstances,it’s understandable that people will be passionate about this topic, whether it’s pro or con on this issue,” stated de Groot. “There was a considerable amount of work and research that went into the presentation that was made at the beginning of the meeting. We were straightforward with the numbers and, I think, that

helped people to understand [the Town’s] perspective on the issue. As well, this wasn’t a case of us telling them ‘This is what’s going to happen.’ Some options were provided, some research was done. We have made improvements in the operations there over the last four years and we want to ensure that continues, but does so in a sustainable way.”

Moving ahead, de Groot said that while the Town did present three different potential options for the future of services at the cemetery at the meeting, they are still open to suggestions. He also noted that the Riverside Cemetery presentation will be placed on the Town’s website and hard copies will be made available at the municipal office for the public.

Great meeting on cemetery More information, better meetings needed

As meetings go, it was tense. It was also hot, crowded and sometimes short on information. That said, it was a good meeting and most everybody had their say.

The topic was Neepawa’s famous, and beautiful cemetery. More specifically it was about perpetual care, f lowers and rising costs.

About 120 people crammed their way into the Neepawa Library to review the Town of Neepawa’s plan to revamp how the cemetery is kept up.

The meeting was videotaped and chaired by one of Neepawa’s best chairmen, Dave Bennet.

The venue was too small and that should have been predictable. In hindsight, it should have been held at the Legion Hall.

Deficit each year The problem at the Neepawa cemetery is that the cost of operations far exceeds the income from the annual sale of plots and interest from the perpetual care trust fund.

Defining perpetual care is a big problem. At the Neepawa cemetery, there are two definitions. Per-

petual care is described in the Manitoba Cemeteries Act with the usual stuff like cutting grass and keeping the place clean and tidy.

The second definition is in a 1995 town bylaw, which is reported to be out of date now, that says there will be 15 flowers planted and cared for on graves that perpetual care has been purchased for. Money has been paid into the perpetual care trust fund and only the interest from that trust fund can be diverted to the care of the graves such as buying flowers along with weeding and watering of the flowers.

deficit every year. In 2017, it was $93,000.

Mayor de Groot said at the meeting, “We spend more on the cemetery than we do on recreation.” It would be good to ask the staff to put those figures together in a chart to prove the point as the town grants $85,000 annually to the Yellowhead Centre, runs a summer rec program, the pool and spends a fair amount of money on parks and soccer fields etc. Statements are OK but facts are better to gain perspective.

Definitions difficult The meeting got hung

up on not only the definition of perpetual care but on the $250,000 that was budgeted and spent replacing the old columbarium which was failing structurally. The budget called for the money to come out of the Perpetual Care Fund which raised a lot of questions among residents. Was it even legal?

Was it prudent? Would it be replaced? As it turns out, the fund wasn’t used but that information only came out after heated and persistent questioning by the people at the meeting.

As it turns out, there was a town surplus at the end of the year and the surplus

was used to fund the columbarium instead of the trust fund. That was not well communicated and should have been.

Neepawa’s Victoria’s Quilts reaches milestone Submitted

On Tuesday, Margaret VanBuskirk picked up a quilt from the Victoria’s Quilts Neepawa off ice.

Soon, Margaret will knock on the front door of a home in the Neepawa area to deliver a handmade quilt to give to the person who lives there. The person has cancer, as does everyone who receives one of the qui lts from Victor ia’s Quilts.

This particular quilt, however, marks a symbolic milestone: it is the 500th quilt that the Neepawa Branch of Victoria’s Quilts Canada has delivered.

The deliveries are all different, says Margaret.

“Some people will visit for 5 minutes, others for an hour. They will talk about their garden, their grandchildren, the trip they took — anything but their illness. Others will say things to the person delivering the quilt that they can’t say to anyone else, because they know they’re never going to see this person again. Most of the visits end in a hug with the recipient expressing their appreciation for the gift of love and warmth.

One recipient provided these words in appreciation: “I received this beautiful quilt this afternoon and cannot begin to thank

you for this most beautiful gift. I am full of emotion and thankfulness. I am thankful to have such kind and loving friends who thought to have this quilt given to me and for the many loving hands that created this work of art. I can never repay you for the love and support you have shown to me.”

The idea behind VQC is si mple: to prov ide handmade quilts, at no charge, to people with cancer, regardless of the type, the stage it is at or where in the country they live in. The Neepawa Branch is the only branch of VQC in Manitoba, which

means we deliver quilts to cancer patients across the entire province.

The Neepawa chapter began in 2013 when we delivered our first quilt and in 2014 we delivered 27 quilts. From there it has snowballed tremendously, to the point that we have delivered over 100 quilts in 2018 to date.

The membership has grown to almost 30 ladies helping out with the various stages of quilt making.

S ome me mb er s he l p during quilting bees, some help at the office, some deliver quilts. Many of the members also work on the quilts at home. In addition

to our local group, we have ladies from Steinbach, Wa l d e r s e e , P l u m a s , G l a d s t one, B r a nd on , Minnedosa, Fisher Branch and Portage all making quilt tops for us. We would not be able to provide quilts too so many people without the support of all these ladies.

The members of the Neepawa Branch of VQC have comforted and soothed the spirits of many people battling cancer, but we have our own spirits lifted by the fun and friendship we share working together.

In addition to “quilting bees,” we have a dedicated group that gets together

every Wednesday at the new office to work on quilt production. This includes cutting kits, sewing tops and backing and organizing deliveries. Quilts are made of 100 percent cotton fabric with a flannel backing and cotton batting.

We receive significant support from Lorna Lehn from Country Lane quilters in St. Rose. Lorna offers her long arm quilting service to us at a nominal fee. Without Lorna’s help, the cost of a quilt would be greatly increased. We estimate that the total cost to create one quilt is $100.00.

In order to raise funding to purchase supplies, we

have held a stew fundraiser, and have appreciated receiving donations of money from service clubs and individual people. We also receive donations of fabric. This year we were the lucky recipients of grants from the Winnipeg Community Foundation, t he B e aut i f u l P l a i n s Community Foundation, the Big Grass Foundation, and the North Norfolk Foundation.

According to Statistics Canada, in 2014, 16.5 per cent of Canadian aged 15 and older (around 4.8 million people) reported that they had been diagnosed with some form of arthritis by a health professional. The two main types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint change where the cartilage at the end of the bones wears away. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory change that often is associated with red and swollen joints.

Arthritis diagnosis starts to accelerate at the age of 50 and peaks at the age of 75.

With this condition being so common and affecting so many Canadians, is there away to help stop the pain and inflammation of arthritis by changing our diet?

Eat your veggies!

Yes, your mom was right, you should always eat your vegetables. There are multiple studies on the effects of decreased arthritic inflammation when abiding by a plant-based diet. Fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids that also help decrease inflammation in the body. Most research looks at the effects of fish and fish oils on rheumatoid arthritis, however there are many other benefits to incorporating Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. This is another great reason to tell your spouse you need to go fishing for the weekend!

There is no one diet that is specifically shown to help

either OA or RA. However, many studies show that you can live better with OA and RA by adding lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet, eating nuts and having fish at least twice per week. Foods to avoid include items with high sugar content, highly processed foods, dairy, and fried foods. Evaluate your diet for two weeks and log what you are eating. There are many online calculators that you can use. Simply log what you ate over the span of a week or two, and the program will tell you your weekly consumption of fats, sugars, and proteins. Then make some changes and start feeling less arthritic pain.

Activity fact: Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in adults in the USA.

Home for the Summer Program underway in PMH Submitted

Fresh off a successful Rural Week initiative, Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) is now looking forward to another beneficial recruitment approach—the Home for the Summer Program. Home for the Summer is a joint initiative with Manitoba regional health authorities (RHAs) and the formerly known Office of Rural and Northern Health (ORNH). ORNH, which is now a part of the Manitoba Health Care Providers Network, started the program as a pilot in 2006.

The program provides students with hands-on clinical or site experience overseen through job shadowing roles. It originally started with medical students, but now extends to nursing and allied health-care students (which include career areas like public/community health nursing, diagnostics and pharmacy).

Four medical students (three in Brandon, one in Dauphin) are participating in the program this year. The

program commenced June 11 and spans a period of six to 10 weeks. This year, the nursing/allied health component features nine students within the health region in sites that include Brandon, Dauphin, Swan River and Virden. Students do not all start or finish all at the same time. The region works with them regarding availability and the number of weeks they wish to participate. The program requires a minimum six-week commitment.

PMH and the Network share in the funding support for student wages within the term positions. Students originate from the area and need to be enrolled in a health care training program that fits a future need for PMH. “This is part of Manitoba’s long-term recruitment strategy that focuses resources on Manitoba trainees,” stated Wayne Heide, Network Project Coordinator. “It provides opportunities throughout the training cycle for learners to spend time in rural and northern practice sites for both educational rotations and summer positions and offers them first-hand experience within rural practices and settings. It also creates an excellent

opportunity for RHAs to begin to recruit these future health-care professionals.”

The journey of Dr. Savanna McKay, who participated in Home for the Summer in 2013, is one example that illustrates how the initiative can come full circle.

Upon graduating from medical school and completing her residency, Dr. McKay started her medical practice within the Swan Valley Primary Care Centre in the summer of 2017.

Besides valuable hands-on work experience, medical students are required to complete a project or case report—which are identified ahead of time with their preceptors/health region. The presentation of these projects occurs at a provincial round table session in the fall.

Last year, one of the projects involved research involving a mumps outbreak within Prairie Mountain Health.

Kerry Leigh Parrott (nee Ritchie) Peacefully in her sleep, Kerry Leigh Parrott (nee Ritchie) passed away at the age of 59, on Friday, June 29, 2018. Kerry was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on May 25, 1959. She was raised and attended school in Neepawa, Manitoba and enjoyed going to the family farm in Roblin, Manitoba, along with many family trips, which usually involved fishing. Kerry attended school in Neepawa starting at HMK, Viscount, and completing at NACI. After high school, she took her nursing in Brandon, becoming a Registered Nurse. Kerry worked as a RN in Neepawa at East View Lodge, then in Prince George, BC, as an ICU Nurse for a time. Finishing her career back in Neepawa with East View Lodge and Country Meadows.

While living in Franklin, Manitoba, her finest work was raising her four children and watching and spending time with her eight grandchildren. Kerry enjoyed spending time with her family, winding down the night with board games, a good day of fishing at Rossman Lake, watching a good thunderstorm with coffee in hand. She enjoyed her dogs she had throughout her life and crocheting all sorts of items for kids and grandchildren in her down time. Predeceased by her father, Walter Ritchie, she is survived by her mother Elizabeth, the love of her life, her husband Murray, her children Ronald, Stephen (April), and their children Grace Elizabeth, Evie Truly, and Claire April, William (Saundra) and their children Josie Darling, Ella Belle, Miles William, and Gus Frederick, Amy (Bryan) and their child Lulu Rey. Kerry is also survived by her sister Sheila (Bruce Bremner), brother Donald Ritchie as well as many nieces and nephews. Ruth Alma Emisch Ruth Alma Emisch passed away quietly at Mont St. Joseph Home in Prince Albert, SK surrounded by her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Jake, her daughter Penny (Ham), her two brothers Alan and Vernon, her sister Donna Gesell and her parents Albert and Catherine Watson.

She is survived by her son-in-law Norman Ham, daughter Faylene (Hal) Stupnikoff, sons Bert (Nancy) Emisch and Jack (Brenda) Emisch; grandchildren, Sean (Kim) Ham, Frank (Corinne) Ham, special granddaughter Carla Ham, David (Peggy) Penner, Penny (Murray) Watchel, Scott (Bridget) Witkowski, Jessica Emisch, Kelsie Emisch; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Norval Goudie

April 10, 1953 – May 24, 2018 Ken passed away at the Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre in Edmonton of complications On from ALS. He was 65. He was predeceased by his parents Norval and Claire Goudie. He was born and raised in Montreal. At an early age Ken had a talent for tinkering and creating. He loved playing with chemistry sets and mixing chemicals to propel toy rockets or raising hundreds of guppies or developing photographic negatives from antique cameras. He enjoyed blues and jazz and for many years worked as a volunteer with his good friend, Marigold, at the Edmonton Folk festival. He also loved building personal computers. Ken was an individual and at times, a dandy. He did not like to conform. He liked to advocate for people in his own way whom he felt were ignored or not being treated fairly by society. These individuals appreciated his help.

Ken moved to Edmonton in the 1970s. He worked for the City of Edmonton for almost 20 years. He suffered from migraine headaches and mental health issues throughout his life. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Ken’s wishes there will be no funeral service. Ken will be interred in Montreal in July 2018.

Ken truly loved his Aunts Loulou and Jackie, his Uncles Don and Dick and his dear cousins; Diane, JoAnne, Mary-Ellen, Cathy, Michael and Patrica. He was young when he was last in contact with his Point St. Charles relatives Aunts DoDo, Meme, Fussy and his Uncles Joey, Walter and Howie and cousins Brenda, Nancy and Laura.

In later years he remembered them fondly.

Ken is survived by his brother Steve and wife Jane (nee Lytle); nephews Jason and wife Megan and their children Cadence and Carson; Travis and wife Ewa and their children Victoria and Emily.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Dr. Zetter Centre for their care and support and the Alberta ALS society in Edmonton for their assistance. Donations in the memory of Ken may be made to the ALS Society.

Compost site continues to be abused

Neepawa’s compost site at the northeast corner of town continues to be abused as this photo shows. Many tonnes of yard waste are converted to mulch or compost at the site and town staff valiantly try to stay ahead of the incoming material.

Small plant waste and grass clippings are supposed to go on one area, tree branches in another. For plastic bags, garbage cans are supplied. Most citizens respectfully use and appreciate the service.

There are exceptions though. In case anyone should wonder, storm doors, windows, coat hangers, pallets and plastic containers don’t belong at the compost site.

Continued from page 12 Having been involved with 100s of meetings over the years, I spotted a few things that came around to bite the mayor, councilors and staff. While the meeting was well chaired and the information was very good, it should not have been the mayor who tried to carry the whole load. One person can’t always remember every detail and that became self-evident as the meeting wore on. Mayor de Groot either didn’t have all the information about the reserve fund or he had forgotten some details. The second problem was the room was way too crowded. As a matter of being polite and allowing others to take up the inadequate number of chairs, the staff chose to stand at the back in a side room where

hearing the proceedings was less than ideal and they weren’t near the front where they should have been to offer information. That was a big mistake as the town’s best resource, the staff, were almost entirely out of the loop for the whole meeting. They should have been at the table at the front and available to answer questions, especially about money and rules.

The town is looking at a way to vastly modify perpetual care over three years. Most people were skeptical that it can happen that fast and even more skeptical that it will close the deficit on the cemetery operations.

The town plans to update their proposals with the ideas presented at the meeting. In my opinion, that will take at least one more public meeting with much stronger

The physical layout of the meeting has to change, the amount of information has to increase. The emotions have to be held in check a bit more.

Over the years, new ideas to make the cemetery operations easier and less labour intensive have often been cast aside. Suggestions such as phased-in automatic watering, organic mulching, physical mulching pads and gradually phasing in the use of perennial flowers have been ignored as far as I know. Few, if any real facts and costs have been presented regarding new methods.

Losing $93,000 on a cemetery is a concern for sure but in an $8.4 million operating budget and a $4.9 million utility budget, perhaps it is a relatively manageable item.

Perhaps town council and staff should do more than what they have normally been doing for housing. Neepawa quite likely needs 200 units of family housing.

If that were to come about, and each unit generated $2,000 in municipal taxes it would come to $400,000 each year forever. Perhaps that would indeed generate income so we could invest more in the living so we can afford to keep up the town and the cemetery. Growth is the key to Neepawa’s future and the growth pressure is there. We just need to respond to it.

So let’s have more good meetings with a better set up and with more information and study more facts. Let’s get on with all the opportunities we have been offered around here. I think the people, whose memories we honour in the cemetery would be pleased if we did.

Homeowners might experience some sticker shock when researching home improvement projects or receiving estimates from contractors. But there are ways for budgetconscious homeowners to transform their homes and still make the most of their home improvement dollars.

• Do your homework. Each year, Remodeling magazine publishes its “Cost vs. Value Report,” a comprehensive study of 21 popular remodeling projects in 149 United States markets. The report notes the value each project retains at resale in 100 markets across the country. Homeowners who want to get the strongest return on investment can access the “Cost vs. Value Report” (www.remodeling.how.net) to see which home improvement projects are best suited for them.

• Do some of the labor yourself. Homeowners willing to swing a hammer also can stretch their home improvement dollars. For example, the home improvement resource This Old House® notes that homeowners willing to do their own demolition before the contractors arrive can save

substantial amounts of money. A professional contractor may charge $1,000 to demo a 200-square-foot deck, but This Old House estimates that homeowners who demo their own decks may spend only $450 (for the dumpster rental and parking permit).

• Hire a consultant. The DIY movement is incredibly popular, no doubt thanks to television channels such as HGTV and the DIY Network. Homeowners with DIY experience may be able to complete projects on their own with little consultation from professional contractors. Some contractors may not offer consulting services, however. The consultation route, which typically requires paying licensed contractors hourly fees to offer guidance, should only be considered by homeowners with legitimate DIY skills, for whom this option can be a great way to save money.

• Schedule renovations during homeowner-friendly times of year. Summer and fall tend to be contractors’ busy seasons, and homeowners will likely pay more

for projects during this time of year. If possible, delay starting projects until right after the new year, when contractors aren’t so busy and might be more flexible with pricing.

Tremendous response to Wolverine Days 2018 Submitted

An outdoor shooting event with something for everyone! If you were looking to try a shooting sport, pick a new hunting rifle or try out a handgun this was the place to be.

Wolverine Days (WD18) took place on location June 23-24 at Wolverine Supplies in Virden and the Fort La Bosse Wildlife Association Range. This year’s event was the seventh open house and fifth range event; and both components to WD18 were a great success!

With the doubled range space and new f irearm products from Blaser, Mossberg, Kodiak Defence, Caracal, FN and Desert Tech there was no shortage of variety for all the different firearms enthusiasts out there! This year also featured Wolverine Supplies’ inaugural showing of PSE, BowTech, Diamond, Excalibur and Crossman archery products. Manufacturer and store reps were on site to showcase these products and offer instruction and knowledge to anyone interested in the Archery sport.

In total, just over 1,000 people took part in Wolverine Days, an annual event hosted by Wolverine Supplies.

For kids at heart Another new component to Wolverine Days - for the kid at heart, was a Crossman pellet pistol shooting gallery for those who wanted to race to see how fast they could knock over the resetting targets.

Lots of laughs were heard from many!

In store there were many savings to be had on fire-

arms and accessories. The Discount Den had savings on smoke grenades and fireworks for those who were getting ready for Canada Day! As the range was now substantially wider to accommodate the growing support from the public, Wolverine Supplies was able to provide a simpler layout, which made the

many different stations and products easier to navigate. Your calibre selection started with .22 long rif le and increased up to the.50 BMG, with a wide variety of calibers in between for customers to try.

It is estimated that over 1,000 friends and customers stopped by over the two-day event. Wolverine

Supplies was ecstatic to see an increase in attendance again this year, and also welcome a diverse crowd of all ages, with many families in attendance from near and far!

Support to STARS D u r i ng Wolver i ne’s open house event they also held a fundraiser for STARS Air Ambulance,

where “morale patches” are available for purchase with three prize packages up for grabs. The goal is to raise $20,000.00 for the STARS program across Western Canada. If you haven’t gotten your patch yet – there might still be some available!

Wolver i ne Suppl ies would like to thank the many volunteers who assisted with making this event great success. These volunteers included the Virden and Area Scouts, courtesy vehicles from Virden Chrysler Dodge, the Southwest Strutters (Canadian Wild Turkey Federation), the CCFR (Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights), Wallace District Fire Department for parking, and Jodi Baxter our first aider.
