Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa (DSRN) will not be running in the next federal election.

Sopuck who is in his third term as MP, made the announcement Saturday morning at the DSRN constituency annual meeting for the Conservative Party of Canada.

He said he spoke earlier in the week to the party leadership and to the Manitoba CPC caucus and his staff and he wanted to let the constituency know his intentions so they can have time to set up a candidate selection process. “One thing I have learned,” said Sopuck, “is that nobody is indispensable. I learned from (former Manitoba premier) Duff Roblin who said that a politician can stay too long. A politician should leave when they are still welcome.” He plans to fill out the balance of his term.

spreading the conservative message on everything from conservation to farming to rural lifestyles as he works with constituencies across the country. While he travels he will be released from

some of his parliamentary duties to allow him to speak at various places.

The DSRN constituency association will start immediately to set up a candidate selection process.

For 98 years, a captured German WWI cannon has been an item of interest in Neepawa.

From the Neepawa Press archives, the Aug. 31, 1920 paper reports: Neepawa Courthouse lawn is adorned with a German gun captured by Canadians in the great war.

Naturally, it attracts much attent ion and inspires some pride of countr y and the achievements of it soldiers overseas. The only ceremony connected with its arrival was an escort by the band from the CPR station on Saturday evening when the streets were crowded and brilliantly lighted.

Buffi’s book meets with wide approval Second book underway

Lenora Buffi, flanked by her proud step-mom Janet Goertzen and a photo of her late-father, Neil Goertzen, was kept busy autographing newly minted copies of her historical fiction, Vista. Buffi’s first endeavour spans two centuries and the research sent the writer on a quest for accuracy that contributed to her five-year adventure culminating in the public launch at Neepawa Public Library, April 18. The event was very well attended by friends from near and far as Buffi; if the questions asked at the reading and the lineup at the book table are a precursor the book will be a success. When asked if another book is in the future Buffi laughingly informed her audience ,”I have already finished three chapters, but it’s not historical, that was too much research.”

A storm’s a-comin’ to Neepawa that’ll have you tapping your toes and clapping your hands, as Scott Woods and his all-star band will perform at the Roxy Theatre on Sunday, May 13. The show features a mix of old-time fiddle music with some lively performances, including Woods renowned trick fiddling, which sees him perform somersaults and walks on a barrel while playing his fiddle. That energetic effort has earned him the nickname “the Flippin’ Fiddler”.

In an interview earlier this week with the Neepawa Banner & Press, Woods noted that the entire show is an uptempo “Branson style” of spectacle.

“For anyone who’s not familiar with [Branson style], it’s a real energetic, fun and family-friendly show that has developed out of Branson, Missouri,”

stated Woods.

While Woods’ f iddle music may seem to be geared primarily towards an older audience, he said that the live performances have a broad appeal that attracts the entire family.

“Fiddle music is happy music. It has a great energy that gets everyone moving.

Our style also branches out into other musical styles, including Irish and Scottish traditions. There is a great mix of styles, as well as humour that makes the entire show the type of thing that everyone can enjoy.”

Performing along with Woods will be his sister Kendra Norris, an awardwinning multi-instrumentalist. Other band members include guitarist Steve Piticco, bassist Peter Sisk, drummer Bill Carruthers and champion step dancer, 13-year-old Leo Stack.

The Fiddling up a Storm tour will be in Neepawa on Sunday, May 13 at the Roxy Theatre. The start time is set for 2:00 p.m.

epopulation is a serious issue facing many rural communities. Over the last hundred years, Canadians have become increasingly urban and this shift has created challenges in many smaller towns and cities. They’ve seen their youth leave for education or career opportunities and not come back.

As local economies have rebounded following the great recession, many communities find themselves in a tough spot— they have jobs, but not workers and if compan- MY ies can’t find the PERSPECTIVE needed workers, they’re likely to move where they can. A look at the help wanted Kate pages show that Jackman-Atkinson there are lots of jobs avai lable locally, but there aren’t always workers available to fill them.

The 2016 Census found that Neepawa was growing, one of the fastest growing rural communities in the province, in fact, but it was the anomaly. For most rural areas, the reality is a stagnant or declining population— A trend that is likely to continue if attracting new residents doesn’t become a priority. There’s a lot of inertia to overcome, the problem has been close to a century in the making.

In the US, especially the midwest, lots of jobs and not enough workers have prompted many communities to get proactive about attracting new residents. With a focus on attracting people early into their careers, many communities are offering some combination of student loan re-payments, free or cheap building lots or cash bonuses for those who move the community for a job. The cash is put up by local chambers of commerce, community foundations or local governments.

Closer to home, the RM of Pipestone is offering serviced residential lots for $10 each. Neepawa and its surrounding municipalities have been lucky, a rapidly expanding major employer has meant that the town is facing a housing shortage, not a shortage of residents. But not all communities within the Banner’s coverage area have been so lucky.

Many villages are hollowing out and municipalities are left with an ever ageing population, as young people leave and build their lives elsewhere. While the Town of Neepawa and Municipality of Riverdale have about 61 per cent of their population between the ages of 15 and 64, other communities have a much lower percentage of working-age residents. For example, 55 per cent of residents in the Municipality of McCreary and 50 per cent of residents in the municipality of WestLake Gladstone are of working age.

Wherever they are, young people want to leave and explore the world. We as communities want them to do this. We want them to gain education or different work experiences. We want them to see what others are doing and the possibilities beyond what they’ve seen growing up. But the key is that we want them to come back. That’s why these programs are so important. We want them to bring their education back to the community. We want them to fill vacant jobs or open businesses and create new jobs. For many, an incentive can help tip the scales in deciding where they set down roots.

Recruiting younger residents to keep businesses going and communities viable is neither a fast, nor an easy task. It’s something that takes time to develop momentum. Communities that see their streets starting to lose their vibrance need to start looking at ways of changing the tide. By the time the community is vacant, it’s too late.

The value of a life

s I wr ite these words, the investigation into the recent Toronto killings is on-going. A 25 year old male suspect has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of first degree and 13 counts of attempted murder. A 14th charge, police say, may be laid soon.

The suspect is accused of using a rental van to deliberately run down the victims. Pictures of the van, the suspect and the crime scene have been posted on the internet, published in newspapers and broadcast on TV; bringing a huge outpouring of sympathy for the victims’ families.

At this point, we know what happened. Police believe they know who did it (remember that in the eyes of the law, a person is deemed innocent until proven guilty). What no one knows is why; and until the case goes to trial, there is no point in speculating.

The full story, whatever it may be, will be revealed when the accused has his day in court.

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein That being said, there is one general observation that can be made. Any act of murder, no matter what may have motivated it, shows a callous disregard for the value of a human life.

Nothing in God’s creation ever comes into existence by accident. God has a plan and purpose for everything he creates. He sees infinite value in every living thing; but especially in people.

No two people on this earth are exactly alike; not even identical twins.

God has given each of us a unique blend of skills, abilities and talents which he expects us to develop and then use in the service of others.

And he has placed you and me exactly where he wants us to be—in the right town, on the right street, in the

right workplace and within the right groups of people so that we can accomplish the tasks to which we have been called and for which we have been gifted.

What God does for you and me, he does for every other person on this earth.

That’s why mass killings like the one we witnessed in Toronto are so disgusting. Those who deliberately choose to take the lives of others show complete disregard for the lives they take and for the God who created them as people of great value; people who are to be treated with dignity and respect.

Nothing they can say in their own defense can ever justify their actions.

No amount of remorse can restore the lives of their victims. We can only hope

and pray that their families will find the hope, help and healing they need from people will genuinely love and care for them.

As for you and me, the best thing we can do is to ask God to help us see the people around us as he sees them—as the unique persons they are—and to do all that we can to help them reach their full potential. That is what God asks of us. Nothing less is good enough for him.

Our actions may not make the front pages of this newspaper. In fact, they may well go unnoticed by everyone except the people we support and encourage.

But if each of us could be a positive influence in the life of just one person, our world will be a much better place in which to live.

Most importantly, God will take note of the things we have done; and one day, when we stand before him (as we all will) we will hear him say: “Well done; good and faithful servant.”

Troublesome findings

few days ago some of the churches c om me mor at e d Earth Day. It was/is fitting to pause and reflect on this earth on which we live. Some of my research revealed unsettling and uncomfortable facts.

In the summer of 2017 my daughter-in-law and I spent several days in Iceland before continuing to France. As we disembarked we noticed the seas of lavender coloured flowers, in the ditches, on the hillsides, everywhere.

Noting their beauty, we mentioned it to our guide on one of our excursions.

Back in the mid 1940’s the lupine was imported to the country. Knowing that the plant’s roots spread quickly, the plan was to use them to stabilise the shallow topsoil- most of Iceland is basically volcanic ash.

What was not known was that not only do the plants have a wonderfully strong root system, they produce a toxin that inhibits the

HOMEBODIES Rita Friesen growth of all other vegetation in the immediate vicinity. The land that had been swept bare of trees years ago for housing, was now overcome by lupines. The beautiful plant is spreading steadily, moving further and further up hills and inland.

And they have not yet found a way to stop it.

And then we have the Asian lady beetle. The not welcome lady bug, that is stinky, and bites, and is very prolific! The species was purposefully released in both the United States and Canadian Maritimes through the ’80s, although entomologists now also say that trade may have played a role. The beetles arrived accidentally at several seaports before the first major

population was discovered in Louisiana in 1988. The bugs have since spread into Manitoba. The species was never intentionally released in Manitoba, countering the common view that farmers initially brought in the bugs for pest control. Yes, they consume an incredible number of aphids, but, according to one report, there has been no pesticide found to control them. There were a few hiding between my window frames, but I don’t have to keep the vacuum at the ready – yet.

What does concern me is the overuse of plastics.

They have a place and a purpose. When I walk I note bags caught up in tree branches, crushed against fence lines, and f loating

in the water. The evening news addressed the problem, showing a drinking straw being removed from a turtle’s nostril, and the contents of a deceased sperm whale including pounds of plastic, clogging the digestive system, and a scuba diver floating amid a sea of plastic garbage. The United Church publication, The Observer, did an in-depth series of articles on “The Plastic Menace”. Worth the read. “Canada is the 3rd highest producer of municipal waste per capita. 720 kilograms of waste was generated by every Canadian in 2012. 12 per cent or less of plastic waste is recycled in Canada. 200,000 tonnes of plastic waste is exported from Canada annually.”

Those are scary numbers.

Makes me wonder how I can make a difference. I am learning to carry nonplastic bags with me when I go shopping, and gently ask for no bag when I make a simple purchase. We/I have a long way to go….

Observation

This coming weekend the mothers are to be treated in a very special way. Maybe a very pretty card expressing love, or some flowers as a token of our love, or maybe even some chocolates. We celebrate and remember all the special times she spent with us when growing up.

However maybe Mom is just a sweet memory, because her death is still mourned. For some it will be a time of grieving. Maybe there is a neighbor or friend who does not have any children, or whose children live far away.

Make sure to let them know of your love and care for them. Most are only a phone call away.

Jesus reminds us to honor our parents. Yes Dad, your turn comes next month. We might have adverse feelings about our relationship with our parents. However without them we would not be here.

Jesus tells us in Mathew 19:19 “Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:23 “Honor your father and mother… that it may go well with you.”

Make motorcycle safety a priority Whether on two, three or four wheels, all road users have the right to be safe on our public roadways, which is why Manitoba Public Insurance is again recognizing motorcycle safety awareness month, and encouraging all road users to share the road responsibly.

In an effort to heighten road safety awareness between drivers of vehicles and motorcyclists, Manitoba’s public auto insurer recently launched its annual “Look Twice” campaign.

With the motorcycle riding season now in full swing, it’s important that motorists remember to watch carefully for motorcyclists, particularly when making lane changes or left turns at intersections. Motorcyclists can also do their part by riding defensively, using safety equipment, and wearing reflective gear to be as visible as possible.

Last year in Manitoba, seven motorcyclists were killed on public roadways. This riding season, the goal is clear – to reduce that number to zero. .

Tight race makes for odd bedfellows On a riser at the front of the room sat a large whiteboard with the names Bland, Cooper and Stoughton across the top.

A fourth column with the word “Other” fit along the right edge. Tallies were recorded

by Maxine Miller, who used a large black marker.

To begin the process, Vera Pinrod shouted, “Cooper!” twice. Two tallies were recorded under Raymond’s name as the Veterans Lodge section of the Town Hall, which included 14 members of the local group, cheered in anticipation of the expected landslide victory of their champion.

Cooper, always confident, grinned knowingly. It was a good start for the “Man of the People.”

Their cheers came to an almost immediate halt as Vera shouted, “Bland,” reading the name on the third ballot.

The anticipation was palpable.

Inside the room, 100 lucky lottery winners waited. Outside, speakers were set up so those not fortunate enough to get inside could hear the proceedings.

Before the vote count began, Vera announced there was a record turnout to mark ballots in the mayoral race. In the previous election, just the usual 800 or so good folks of the Valley turned out to vote. According to the records of the precinct coordinators, a total of 934 voters had marked ballots on this election day. That was all but four of the registered voters in the Valley.

“Cooper!” Vera shouted, followed by cheers from the Veterans Lodge section.

“Bland!” she continued the count, as Iris Long jotted the vote results on

her reporter’s note pad.

After five minutes of tallying, the board indicated 24 votes for Raymond Cooper, 19 votes for “Silver Tongue” Dick Bland, and no votes for Juliet Stoughton.

Raymond began to breathe more easily as his concern that Juliet’s last-minute entrance might harm his chances of getting a majority of the votes, which was needed to win the mayor’s race outright, dwindled away.

Finally, at the 5:07 mark, Vera shouted, “Mickey Mouse!” and the crowd broke out in laughter. Mickey, along with Ima Goose and a few others, generally received a dozen or more votes, but wasted ballots were much less common during the 1998 race. It was obvious one vote could make a difference.

The laughter subsided as Vera announced the name on ballot 45, “Juliet Stoughton.”

There were no boos or cheers, as had been the case every time Cooper or Bland received a vote. There was just an audible sigh emanating throughout the room.

Finally, Marvin Walsh, watching from the Veterans Lodge section of the room, shouted, “I guess she had to vote for herself!” as several folks inside Town Hall and outside on the front steps laughed in response.

Not everyone laughed, however. Outside, Earl Goodman’s laugh quickly subsided as his wife Rhonda, who was sleeping separately from him for only the second time in their marriage, glared at him with a look that sent chills up his spine.

“Stoughton!” shouted Vera, calling out Juliet’s name again.

Raymond received the next vote. Then, Mayor Bland, then two votes for Juliet. There was a mumble throughout the Town Hall. The Veterans Lodge section was noticeably silenced.

At the 51:49 mark, Iris noted half the ballots had been counted. She quickly looked over her note pad as Vera announced a five-minute recess before the tally would continue.

Iris had been very careful as she jotted down the vote count. After 467 votes, the tally looked like this: Dick Bland: 137 Raymond Cooper: 234 Juliet Stoughton: 91 Mickey Mouse: 2 Ima Goose: 3 Outside, Farley Puckett turned to his wife and said, “How can there be 90 people stupid enough to vote for that woman?”

From the look on his wife’s face, he realized Earl wasn’t the only man sleeping alone in the Valley that night.

NACI HOPE group update

Did you know that our overflowing landfills are filled with materials that could be recycled and reused? Although Canadians have been recycling 60 per cent more materials than in 2000, we could still do better.

The NACI HOPE group this year has been focusing more on the environment.

One big focus of ours is on recycling. How well have you been recycling? Some common things that are often put in the recycling are Tim Horton disposable coffee cups, candy wrappers, kleenexes, and half full drink containers. However, these are NOT recyclable. Don’t let this scare you from recycling though! It

is very important to make sure things that can be reused are recycled. The HOPE group has organized an activity for the classes to participate in at NACI. The students were asked to make sure they recycle what is recyclable and put garbage in the garbage.

Each class had their recycling bins gone through by HOPE members. They were given points if they have things in the wrong bin. They wanted the lowest points possible. We are hoping to see a change in our recycling here at the school by doing these activities.

HOPE also took part in a program called Bag Up Manitoba this fall. To participate people collected plastic bags of any kind to donate them so they can be reused. We had to make sure they were

clean though! We collected 4,419 bags for the program last fall. The program sent us a bird feeder for our school made of plastic bags.

Although HOPE won’t be collecting plastic bags again until the fall, you can drop them off at Safeway to recycle. These bags are can be reused to make everyday items. Our school will be doing this program again next fall so make sure

you collect your bags!

HOPE’s next project is working with the Rotary Club doing a spring food drive.

NACI HOPE students will be coming around to residences on May 11 to drop off bags for you to put food into. Then on the afternoon of May 15, HOPE students will be back to collect the non-perishable food items. Please leave bags with items on your doorstep

Rosemary

Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs. I grow it in my garden every year and if I chop onions I remove the onion smell from my hands by running them through a stem of rosemary. Ancient Greek students wore rosemary garlands in their hair to improve memory. Placed under your pillow it is said to prevent bad dreams. For centuries it was used in wedding bouquets as it is a symbol of fidelity, love and friendship. My favorite use for it is in soups and stews.

Rosemary has a pungent flavour and should be used sparingly when cooking.

Chicken Stew 4 chicken breasts 2-3 Tbsp. cooking oil 1/4 cup of flour 1 large on ion, f inely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 2 ribs of celery, sliced 2-4 cups baby potatoes, cut in halve

1 small package fresh mushrooms, sliced 2 cups chicken broth 1/4 cup white wine 2 Tbsp. minute tapioca 1 Tbsp. Chicken soup base 1 tsp. dried minced rosemary leaves or 1 Tbsp. fresh 1 Tbsp. LITEHOUSE poultry herbs 1/2 tsp. pepper

Cut chicken breasts into 1 1/2 inch pieces. Flour pieces and slightly brown in oil. Place in small roaster. Add all the prepared vegetables. In a small bowl mix the remaining ingredients. Add to the roaster and mix in. Place in a 350°oven and bake for 1 1/2 -2 hours or until veggies are cooked.

Rosemary biscuits These biscuits go well with the above recipe.

1 cup white flour 1 cup whole wheat or spelt flour 1 Tbsp. chicken soup base 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda

2 tsp. dried crumbled rosemary leaves or 2 Tbsp. fresh, chopped 1/3 cup butter 3/4 cup buttermilk 1 tsp. or more of LITEHOUSE poultry herb

In a bowl mix the flours, soup base, baking powder, soda and rosemary. Cut the butter into the flour until crumbly.

Stir in the buttermilk gently to form a soft dough. Turn out on a floured surface and pat into a circle about 1 1/2 inch thick. Top with LITEHOUSE poultry herb and gently pat on. Cut into halve and cut each halve into 4-5 pieces.

Bake in a preheated 400° oven for 12-15 minutes or until evenly browned. and they will be picked up. Items that are needed include canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meat, rice, small one pound bags of sugar, small flour packages, coffee, tea, peanut butter, jam, crackers and school snacks.

Less spending compared to 2017

By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press Minnedosa has finalized the numbers on its new financial plan. Council reviewed and then approved the document on Tuesday, May 8. The annual operating budget for this year will be $4,593,813.70. That’s a decrease from the $5,033,807.95 that was budgeted in 2017, though the actual spending last year was only $4,519,834.86 The 2018 budget has set aside a total of $857,000.00 for capital expenditures, including a combined $255,000 for several road repair projects. Those specific upgrades include; Main Street South ($85,000), 5th Ave. S.E. ($80,000) and 2nd Ave. N.W. ($90,000). Other notable budget expenditures for this year include $185,000 to the Primary Care Clinic, $130,000 for upgrades to Victoria Bay main and service lines and $100,000 for arena repairs.

A wide array of smaller projects are also receiving support.

As for the impact to property owners, the average reassessment rate will be 3.7 per cent. It’s expected that about 60 per cent of residents’ reassessment rate will be less than that number, which means they should be paying less on their taxes. For the remaining 40 per cent of property owners, the tax rate may increase, but should only go up by small portion. The exact amount will vary on a case by case basis.

Minnedosa mayor Ray Orr said this is a responsible budget.

“We’re trying to be responsible with our spending, while still doing everything we can with what we’ve got. One of the things you always find is that there’s lots of things to do and not enough money to do it. We’re the same as everybody else in that regard, but we’ll trying to do the best we can and keep the town moving forward,” said Orr.

The Neepawa Rotary Club of Neepawa #5550 met on Apr. 26 for their annual Paul Harris Banquet. Paul Harris Fellow pins and certificates were awarded to a number of volunteers and members.

District Governor Peter Neufeldt spoke at the banquet and presented the awards.

Dave Bennet presented a PHF certificate and pin to Pat Gawaziuk in recognition of her long time community service with a number of organizations

including the Lily Festival and Neepawa Settlement Services committee. Bennet also presented a certificate and pin to Helen Drysdale for leadership wth cadets and the Beautiful Plains Museum. The Tony Otten Award supporting the Polio Plus program was presented to Ron Nordstrom with an introduction by Wayne Hildebrand.

Neufeldt commented that in 1985 there were 1,000 new cases of polio reported every day but through prevention programs like Polio Plus, the number of cases now are very small.This year only 10 cases have been reported in 2018 so far. He noted that there will have to be three consecutive years of no cases reported for the disease to be declared eradicated.

1988: NASA speakers visit Hazel M. Kellington

80 years ago Friday, May 11, 1938 Alguire Bros. have purchased the Foerster Block on Mountain Avenue and the store premises have been rented to John A. Brodie, of Brandon, who will start up a second hand furniture store and repair shop. The building is to be remodelled later to make room for more office space.

70 years ago Thursday, May 13, 1948 Neepawa was well represented on the prize list at the Gladstone Musical Festival held last week. Betty Thomson was awarded highest marks in the piano solo class and first place in the grade six piano class.

Betty Kerr won the grade one piano class. The successful young musicians are pupils of G. Death.

60 years ago Tuesday, May 13, 1958 The second severe dust storm of the early summer season swept through the Neepawa area Monday. It is expected that extensive damage may have been caused to early crops in some areas, but details were not available this morning. Winds of 42 mph were recorded here Monday, as dust was piled up and carried thousands of feet into the air. Although this was less severe than the 60 mph recorded here on April 17, Monday’s storm was believed to have covered a much wider area.

Reports stated that most of Manitoba and Saskatchewan were affected.

50 years ago Friday, May 10, 1968 Runners from Neepawa captured three trophies when they competed in a road race from Winkler to Plum Coulee last Saturday.

In the junior girls four-mile event, Vicky Stoddart of Neepawa was the individual winner, topping an entry of 49 runners in a time of 27 minutes and 35 seconds. Gordon Snell of Neepawa was the winner in the senior boys eight-mile event, covering the distance in 47 minutes and 50 seconds.

40 years ago Thursday, May 11, 1978 Close to 500 boy scouts, cubs and beavers, and at least 110 adult supervisorhelpers from Wester n Manitoba were in the field Saturday, May 6, for the annual “Trees for Tomorrow” program. Boys from Neepawa, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Gladstone, Carberry, Erickson, Oak River, Rivers and Shilo each planted over 100 Scotch and Jack Pine trees as their personal contribution to Manitoba’s ecological future. The trees were planted in the Whitemud Conservation District near the community of Mountain Road on the eastern slopes of Riding Mountain.

30 years ago Tuesday, May 10, 1988 NACI science teacher Bob L epischa k promised that when speakers involved in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration came to talk to students at HMK “There will be lots of neat stuff that attracts kids.”

Lepischak wasn’t underestimating the impact NASA speakers would have. Last Tuesday Dr. Dale Bremmer, Nancy Nixon and William Nixon stopped off at the elementary school on their way to the tenth annual Western

Manitoba High School Symposium. With a variety of apparatus, ranging from Coke cans to a baseball, Bremmer was able to show the students concepts which in a larger context are applied to space travel. “We have come a long way in our space program,” Bremmer told the class. “It’s amazing what we’re able to push up into orbit.” He said that the first satellite put into orbit on January 31, 1958 weighed 30.7 pounds. Today he said the weights of objects being put into space are measured in tons. As Bremmer went from demonstration to demonstration to illustrate the effects of gravity, vibrations and temperature, it was obvious he had the class’ apt attention. By the time his hour and a half was nearing an end, it was obvious the students were ready for an hour more. “How much time do I have left?”

Bremmer asked in the last few minutes. “He can have the whole day as far as I’m concerned,” said one spell bound fifth grader.

20 years ago Monday, May 11, 1998 Emergency response teams spent Wednesday morning sharpening skills they hope they will never have to call upon. A mock disaster staged at the Canadian Pacific railway crossing on Rosedale Ave. in Neepawa was a testing ground for local and provincial response teams. The Neepawa Fire Department, ambulance service and RCMP detachment responded to the call for practice, along with a number of provincial agencies such as Manitoba Environment and the Emergency Measures Organization. To a man, and woman for that matter, the response teams responded quickly, efficiently and mostly without any sense of urgency. “In the

back of your mind, you know it’s only an exercise and not a real emergency,” said Bob MacNight of the Neepawa RCMP. 10 years ago Monday, May 12, 2008 Wayne Hollier’s decade long contribution to the TransCanada-Yellowhead Highway Association, in-

cluding a one year term as president, was recognized with the Tete Jaune award at the association’s 62nd annual meeting in Yorkton.

Tete Jaune - literally translated as Yellow Head - was the nickname of fair haired Metis guide Pierre Bostonais, who first guided fur traders for the North West and Hudson Bay companies in 1825.

A & B Dalrymple Greenhouse celebrates 30th year

What started as something small has flourished incredibly over the past years. This year marks a special, rare occurring occasion for Minnedosa residents Barbara and John Dalrymple. Thanks to their loyal customers, they are now celebrating their 30th year since the opening of their environmentally conscious greenhouse operation.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years already,” Barbara Dalrymple said in disbelief. “The years have flown past!”

“A lot of people are surprised when they actually come in here,” Dalrymple explained in the interview. “We started out really small with just a little greenhouse, but we have four nice big greenhouses now.” The pair have added a tea room to one of the greenhouses, which they hope to use more often in the future, as well as a water feature.

Patrons are also able to view fish and baby lambs, giving them a farm experience that so many people miss out on.

Although the Dalrymples may have expanded, their goal is still the same. The co-owners aim to provide the unique country garden feel, while still providing all the newest varieties of flowers alongside the old. They believe this sets them apart from larger competing greenhouses or stores, and is key to creating the loyal and supportive relationship they have with their customers. The Dalrymples attend seminars on a regular basis to ensure they keep up to date, and are gathering fresh ideas all the time.

The NACI Tigers varsity fast-pitch team had a tremendous weekend in Portage la Prairie, winning the B-Side bracket at the annual Saints Classic tournament. The event is one of the biggest fast-pitch events of the year, featuring 16 of the best clubs from all across the province.

NACI found themselves in a tough draw during the round robin portion of the weekend; with Major Pratt (Brandon), Morden and Prairie Mountain (Somerset) serving as the early competition. The Tigers put in a solid performance, going 2-1 in the preliminaries. They defeated Morden by the score of 5-3 and Prairie Mountain with 7-6 decision. Their lone defeat was a 13-12 loss to Major Pratt. That single loss was enough to shift NACI into the B-Side playoff.

The Minnedosa and District Recreation Commission has secured a world class athlete for the this year’s edition of its Sports Dinner. It has been confirmed that curler and multiple Olympic gold medalist Kaitlyn Lawes will headline the event, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20.

Commission member and town councillor Frank Taylor told the Banner & Press that they are very pleased to have arranged such a well respected athlete such as Lawes for the event.

Lawes has been a member of the Jennifer Jones rink since 2010. The team has won multiple world championships and Olympic gold medal in 2014.

The boys of summer are back, as the Santa Clara Baseball League (SCBL) has announced its 2018 schedule. There will be eight clubs competing in the SCBL this season, playing one another twice over the course of the year. The regular season will end on July 4, with the playoffs beginning shortly thereafter.

As for opening night, it’s set for Monday, May 14 and will see a pair of games on the docket for the Senior ‘AA’ circuit. The Carberry Royals will travel to Austin to face the A’s, while the Dauphin Brewers will be in Ste. Rose to play the Ebb and Flow Lakers. As for the defending league champions, the Neepawa Cubs, their first game will be in Portage on Tuesday, May 15 against the Padres. The Cub’s home openers will take place on Wednesday, May 23, when they will host the Minnedosa Mavericks Another notable date to be aware of for this season will be Aug. 10-12, when the Cubs will host the Senior ‘AA’ provincial championship. This is the second straight year that Neepawa has been selected to serve as the host community. Scott Newton of the Neepawa Cubs said that Baseball Manitoba was very pleased with the local response to the 2017 event, in terms of both volunteer and attendance numbers.

“The support of the community really made it an exciting weekend for everyone involved. Neepawa has always been great when it comes to volunteers and they proved it again last year. The number of people in the stands was also solid, and not just for the Cubs’ games. We’re really proud of what we were able to pull off last year and hope to build off it again this year,” stated Newton.

Because the SCBL is hosting provincials, that will ensure two teams from the league will be involved. The Cubs have already secured their spot as the host club. The other position will be given to the team that finishes first in the regular season standings. If that team happens to be Neepawa, the second place club will secure the spot.

Ashton Anderson Brandt Young going from Chiefs to Chiefs Yellowhead D-man picked by Spokane in WHL Bantam Draft wins scholarship

After an exceptional career in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), former Neepawa Natives’ forward Ashton Anderson is ready to move on to the next stage of his life. That next stage will include some well-deserved support from the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba (IBAM)/MJHL scholarship program.

The 21-year-old from Rivers was recently presented a $2,000 cheque at this year’s IBAM President’s dinner staged at Winnipeg’s RBC Convention Centre.

Anderson was singled out for this prize due to his stellar efforts both on and off the ice. He graduated with honours from Rivers Collegiate and played for the Yellowhead Chiefs of the MMJHL before joining the Natives in 2014-2015.

In addition to being one of the Natives’ top players on the ice, Anderson was also very involved within the community of Neepawa. He volunteered with the Neepawa Minor Hockey Association; the Breakfast Club program, helping children with skating and hockey skills; Neepawa Country Meadows Care Home, playing cards, bingo, and other games with residents; the local food bank, collecting food items, putting together packages and delivering them to people in need with the Neepawa Salvation Army.

In a press release announcing Anderson as the scholarship winner, MJHL commissioner Kim Davis noted that “Ashton was very committed to the community and volunteered in a number of charitable events and activities,” and that he exemplifies what it means to be a Junior A hockey player.”

Anderson’s future plans are to attend university and eventually become an optometrist. After receiving the scholarship, he thanked IBAM and the MJHL for the support.

“This scholarship will assist me in my post-secondary education finances,” said Anderson. “I’m honoured to have been selected. Thanks also to the Neepawa Natives’ organization for all its help and guidance.”

Neepawa’s Brandt Young was one of three members of the Yellowhead Bantam Chiefs to be selected in the 2018 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft. On Thursday, May 3, the 15-year-old defensemen was chosen in the tenth round by the Spokane Chiefs.

In 2017-2018, Young put together a solid 44 point season (4 goals - 40 assists) for Yellowhead on the blue line over the course of the season. In their draft report on Young, the Spokane Chiefs scouting staff indicated that they see him as a poised player, especially in the defensive zone, who makes good first passes and finishes his hits.

Upon learning that his WHL playing rights were picked up by Spokane, Young was quick to tweet out a heartfelt thanks to his family, friends, coaches and teammates who have all helped him to get to this point in his playing career.

Shortly after draft day, the Neepawa Banner & Press had the opportunity to sit down with Young to discuss his selection. He noted that heading into the day, he didn’t have any expectations about when and where he

would be selected. As for what’s next, Young stated that he’s looking forward to participating in the WHL club’s fall evaluation camp.

“I’ve had a chance to speak with some members of the scouting staff and just told them I was excited and honoured to be a part of the Chiefs organization,” said Young. “I’m looking forward to going out [to Spokane] and being involved in the camp. I’m sure the staff there will be very informative and the experience is going to help me improve as a player.”

taking part in the Hockey Manitoba U-16 Program of Excellence in Portage la Prairie May 10-13. After that, he’ll be very focused on his training to ensure he heads into the fall in optimal condition.

As for Young’s teammates, Colby Wotton of Foxwarren, MB was the first of the Yellowhead trio to hear his name called on that day. He was selected in round seven by the Regina Pats In the 2017-2018 regular season, Wotton accumulated 48

points (24 goals - 24 assists) for the Chiefs.

The other member of the Chiefs picked in the draft was Sloan Stanick of Rapid City, who was also chosen in the seventh round, but by the Everett Silvertips. Stanick put together a 59-point season (28G - 31A) in 36 games.

The WHL Bantam Draft took place on May 3 in Red Deer, AB and involved the WHL clubs choosing draft-eligible players born in 2003 who reside in western Canada or the United States.

Neepawa Gun Show right on target 2018 event deemed a success

The 2018 edition of the Neepawa Wildlife Association’s (NWA) Gun and Collectibles Show has received generally positive reviews. The event was held on Saturday, May 5 at the Yellowhead Arena and featured 35 exhibitors. As for the overall attendance, early estimates had the attendance numbers on pace to be higher than the 2017 results.

Along with featuring a wide range of rif les, air pistols and knives, the Gun Show also offered a variety of fishing and camping equipment. Coordinator

Harris Lowe said that the vast array of products offered by vendors has made the event very popular.

“We’re pleased with the numbers that came through the door. Right from the start of the day [at 9:00 a.m.], it seems to have been consistently busy. That’s what we like to see and, obviously what the vendors like to see as well,” said Lowe. “Our region has a long history of people who enjoy hunting and fishing and that translates to a lot of interest in an event like this. I want this to be a little bit of everything, not just something for gun guys.

With the 2018 show now in the books, Lowe thanked many local businesses and

individuals for their support for both the show. As for the proceeds from the event, they will go towards the Neepawa Junior Rifle Club.

New hiking club established in Neepawa

The Neepawa Hiking Club has taken its initial steps in the community.

The group held its inaugural walk on Monday, May 7, with a pair of hikes across the Langford Trail.

About a dozen people participated in the 8:45 a.m. walk, with a few early risers being involved with the 7:00 a.m. walk.

Several other individuals expressed interest in being involved in the near future.

The idea for the hiking club was devised by Brenda Ferguson, who wanted to add a new exercise program into her weekly routine. She thought walking, or more specifically, nature hikes would be an enjoyable option and that doing it with a group of people would make the experience more fun and motivating. Ferguson added that the plan moving ahead will feature a pair of hikes every week.

“It’ll be twice a week on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings, where we’ll go to some of the local trails. Either the Langford Trail or the hiking trail right here in [Neepawa] or the Rosedale Farm Trail.

And then one Saturday a

month, we’re thinking of picking a trail somewhere in the Westman region and making a day of it. It won’t be a huge distance away, but someplace different, within driving distance.

The f irst Saturday, we were thinking of doing this is June 16 and we’ll be going to the Brandon Hills. We’ll try to keep it within an hours drive of Neepawa. For those days, we’re trying to arrange a carpool and we just ask to contribute a few dollars to the drivers for gas.”

Positive response Ferguson said a Facebook page has been set up for the Neepawa Hiking Club and has received a very positive early response, with about 40 likes and many more comments and shares of the information starting to make the rounds. She said the only rule for the hiking club is no pets, as the walks will be out in some bushy areas.

“The terrain will be a little bit rough at some points, so be prepared.

Don’t wear f lip-f lops,” stated Ferguson. “But it’ll still be a fun oriented walk.

The 2018 financial plan for the Town of Neepawa has been approved. On Tuesday, May 1, council gave second and third reading to the document, wh ich has a l located $8, 557,713.17 towards the general operating fund and $4,929,473.36 to the utility operating fund.

Compared to the 2017 budget, spending in the general fund is up slightly, by just over $155,000.

A major change to the numbers comes in the ut ilit y operat ing fund though, as spending there is down by $7.8 million year-over-year.

The plan also included a decrease in the municipal mill rate as it will drop to 22.153 mills in 2018, down by 0.764 compared 2017. The mill rate is a f igure representing the amount per $1,000 of the assessed value of the property, which is used to calculate the amount of property tax.
