By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press A familiar and well-respected member of Manitoba’s political landscape has decided not to pursue re-election. Agassiz MLA Eileen Clarke, who has also served as the Minister of Municipal Relations since January, has announced via social media that she will not run for office in 2023. In her Facebook posting on the subject, Clarke stated “I will be retiring from my political life as of the 2023 provincial election. Until then, I will continue to serve my faithful Agassiz constituents, Manitoba municipalities and all residents of Manitoba.” She added, “It has been and continues to be an honour and privilege to experience a political career serving our sustainable and unique province.”

Clarke was first elected as the MLA for the Agassiz riding back in 2016 and re-elected in 2019. Along with her current position as Minister for Municipal Relations, she had also previously served as Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations from 2017 to 2021. As well, between 2006 and 2014, Clarke served as Mayor of Gladstone.

Journey is not over In her announcement, Clarke noted that her experiences as an MLA were so much more than she could have ever imagined or wished for.

“My stars are aligned and I feel I have accomplished some good things, I have gained knowledge, experience and many new friends along the way,” said Clarke. “My life journey is not over, but it will take a different path in 2023, I will patiently wait to see what’s next for me.”

New financial support from the federal government have been announced for the Back Forty Trail Park in Neepawa.

The government of Canada announced some new funding for two recreational facilities in the province last week, one of which was Neepawa’s Back Forty Trail Park.

At a press conference on Aug. 17, Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Reg Helwer, Minister of Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services, stated that they will be committing up to $550,000 to the HyLife Back Forty Multi-Use Trail Park through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

“Our government recognizes the importance

of investing in recreation infrastructure to help build healthy, inclusive and vibrant communities. These investments improve the quality of life for Manitobans,” said Helwer.

Neepawa mayor Blake McCutcheon stated, “As our community continues to grow, Council understands the importance of ensuring the availability of accessible public spaces that offer a variety of options for recreational leisure activity. In this regard, we are pleased to have been selected to

receive this funding, as it will allow us to work towards completing a fully functional and maintained multi-use trail park.”

Neepawa’s chief administrative officer, Colleen Synchyshyn, explained that the Town had applied for this funding in 2019, before the Back Forty had opened.

While the park is currently open to the public and in use, there is still work to be done to it.

“The funding will be used to further develop the area by improving the

site design, adding more features to the landscape, including more trees and compatible vegetation, rock scaping, adding picnic shelters, tables, natural play areas/playgrounds, granular pathways, etc.,” Synchyshyn noted.

The other project that was announced to be getting funding was a new ice plant for the University of Manitoba’s Max Bell Centre. The university will be receiving up to $363,200 for that project.

Sorting through the rules T I Right in the

am moved to write about the fact that in five of my hospital stays over the last few years, I was very sick. Not to be overly dramatic, but left untreated in those five visits, I might not be here to write this column. I feel it’s important to share my thoughts on life and death. As always, you are free to agree or disagree.

There are things we have no choice in. We are born– no choice there for us. We die; some choose to end their life, but for the most part, we have a varying number of days. Some of us live only minutes, some a 100 years or more. What we do with our lives is somewhat under our control.

What we do have full control over is what happens after we die. There are a lot of jokes and songs about death and Heaven and Hell. Some are illustrative, some are frivolous, some ridiculous.

I am of the Christian faith and cling tightly to the Bible verse in John 3:16– “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (King James Version) Many people, churches and faith organizations have tried to add to this simple statement. The additions or extra rules may be well intentioned, but if “getting to heaven” or “being saved” or “salvation” is attached to anything except John 3:16, it is an unnecessary add-on.

The rules and regulations of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths are rooted in the Ten Commandments, but they are not about salvation, they are rules for living. Very important rules, but not directly attached to salvation.

Below, I have re-printed the Ten Commandments as worded in the King James Version of the Bible in Exodus 20.

“And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make neepawa

I just want re-state that the Ten Commandments are God’s pattern for living, but no matter how closely you adhere to them, they do not bring salvation. One of the commandments held over people was to go to church every Sunday. Well,

the Sabbath isn’t Sunday, it’s Saturday, for one thing, and the word Sabbath means so much more than not working and attending a service that whole books have been written on that topic.

Another of the commandments has been badly distorted over the centuries.

Note verse 12 says “Honour thy father and thy mother”. It is often misquoted as “Obey your mother and father” and that is usually a good practice, but if a parent is leading a child into incest or crime, then obeying the parent is not a good thing. It is quite different to honour than to obey.

Once the 66 books of the Bible were mostly agreed upon, the faith organizations went to work and added thousands more rules outside of the Bible. Sorry, but a person doesn’t go to Hell for not attending a faith service, for not giving to their faith organization, for not obeying the priest, the rabbi, the minister, the pastor or the church board. Doing all those things nothing to do with entering into Heaven.

One needs to evaluate the “extra” rules and teachings, and should do so, but the only way to Heaven is by way of John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (King James Version) In regards to salvation, nothing else matters.

he quilts were breathtaking, the colours, the designs, the stitching, the marvellous use of various mediums. In one moment I thought– I could do that, and with the next breath– I could never do that!

The setting elicited about the same response! The Eleanor Rose Garden in Kelwood is the work of a true artist, with the colours, designs and patterns alternately inspiring and discouraging me as well the array of quilts waving on the lines! Little wonder that those out for a leisurely drive choose the garden as the destination spot, or those seeking a perfect backdrop for family photos find their favourite scene in this park.

The quilts… How the art has changed since its inception.

The hours a homemaker spent salvaging the best portions of a worn out garment, waiting until there were enough pieces to begin carefully hand stitching them together to form a serviceable quilt/bedcover/blanket. The design binding the front to the back was, again, serviceable.

Pretty helped, but there was a purpose to every stitch, make the quilt strong enough to withstand laundry day!

What a boon the treadle sewing machine was to the early seamstress! And then some of the awesome quilts at the show were entirely sewn by hand, by choice! Wow, Gayle, I can’t imagine! The intricate quilting patterns achieved by the quilting machine are so intense, a design within and throughout the finished work.

I have quilts. Not of the calibre of the ones on display.

Ones to keep loved ones warm, ones that hold a memory.

I have the last quilt that Ed’s mother created. At the time of her passing, other family members either had enough of her handwork or they could see that her skill had diminished. It is now faded, frayed and still cherished. I have the first quilt that I ever sewed. It is sewn from the undefeatable, indestructible Fortrel. The kind of fabric that could be stretched just a little to make the corners match! The colours are not ones that I would have called first choice, they were the ones that were available! That poor thing is now 50 years old, has been re-stitched in a spot or two, but sturdy and warm as the day I proudly completed it!

I have reminisced of quilts before– usually in January when I am working on some, so you know that some have been hand quilted, some tied, some machine quilted. Some have been gifted, some have been donated, and many have been given to family. When I viewed the tie quilt at the display, I knew how I have envisioned the one I crafted from the collection of Ed’s ties. May my child never see the perfect one! She is happy with the one she has, I think.

So, yes, I was discouraged, for my abilities at quilting will never compare to the quilts on display. I was also inspired. I am getting serious about collecting the patterns for an Underground Railway quilt. I can see the colours and feel the movement. I think I am ready to do the hard work of sizing the patterns to 10 inch squares. In winter….

The choice is yours

O

ne of our home’s major appliances broke down two weeks ago. It was still relatively new and had given us excellent service. But one of its major components failed and replacement parts were not available. We had no choice but to purchase a new unit.

One of the first life lessons we learn is that nothing lasts forever. Vehicles break down and must be repaired, so do home appliances, computers, radios, TVs, etc. Parts are available for some of these items and repairs can be made. But sometimes they aren’t. So we upgrade and the old item goes to a recycling firm that reduces it to the elements from which it was originally made.

The same is true of these bodies in which we live.

The first two human bodies were engineered to live forever in a perfect world.

One selfish act by our first human parents brought the curse of death on humanity and on all creation. Thanks to their actions, humanity

After working and reworking the one slipper, I got it done and I looked at it. I could only say “thank you Lord.” It was He who upheld my strength and brought it to pass. Now I can look with a humbling heart how I had finished the slippers with God’s help.

Neil Strohschein is now a dying breed living on a dying planet. All our efforts to combat climate change and clean up the mess we’ve made of our environment, while noble and certainly well-intentioned, won’t extend the life of this planet one day beyond the day set by God for its destruction and replacement with a new heaven and a new earth.

As for our human bodies, we do all we can to keep them healthy and strong.

Thanks to advances in modern science, replacement parts are available for knees, hips and other joints that wear out over time. We can even replace parts of major organs (like the valves in a human heart) with mechanical parts made in a factory somewhere. But while these

There is, however, one part of us that will live on after our bodies die. The Bible calls it “the soul.”

The soul is “the person that lives inside the body.” We are what theologians call tripartite beings– made up of body, soul and spirit.

The body, as noted above, is the earthly home for the soul. The Spirit is “the breath of life, given by God, that holds body and soul together.” It was breathed into our first parents on the day they were created and is breathed into every subsequent human at the moment of his or her conception.

The Bible says that at

death, the Spirit returns to God who gave it. Our lifeless bodies will return to the earth from which they were taken. But the soul (the person who lived inside the now lifeless body), will enter the life to come.

The question each of us must answer is: “Where will I spend eternity?” God tells us we can choose our eternal destiny.

Two thousand years ago, God sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ our Lord, to this earth. He lived among us for 33.5 years. At the end of that time, he was arrested, tried, convicted of crimes he had not committed and sentenced to death.

Before he died, God “laid on him the iniquity (sin) of us all” (Isaiah 53:6) and Jesus died to pay “the wages of sin” (death– see Romans 6:23) for all humanity.

God offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who put their faith in Jesus Christ.

He promises judgment and eternal punishment for those who do not. He offers us life or death and says: “The choice is yours.”

He’s an icon in many communities, in the education field and in many different sports. Scott, who lives in Carberry, has been most recently familiar to Neepawa Banner & Press readers as he regularly has filled a page in the paper with news from Carberry and beyond.

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press A new Town of Neepawa employee and some progress on municipal projects were just a few of the topics covered in the Town’s latest council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

New by-law enforcement officer hired Councilor Darryl Gerrard noted that a long-vacant position has now been filled for the Town. Retired Staff Sergeant Mark Morehouse is taking on the role of by-law enforcement officer. Morehouse has been with the Neepawa detachment of the Spruce Plains RCMP for many years and just recently retired from his position there.

“He’s always treated the community fairly and we’re very fortunate to have someone with his experience. He will be in the community a couple days a week doing by-law enforcement,” noted Gerrard.

Mayor Blake McCutcheon added, “People come to us and we say, ‘yes, we know we have a by-law, but we’re not really quite sure how we’re going to enforce it.’ And now we have Mr. Morehouse, it’s perfect. He’ll be really good for the community, he’s well-known and he’s well respected.”

Manager of operations report Denis Saquet, manager of operations for the Town, had a few updates on some of the projects going on in the community. He noted that the water treatment plant reservoir was progressing nicely. The new site isn’t fully commissioned yet, as they were still waiting for an electrical component for the facility’s generator to arrive.

The new RCMP detachment office is nearing completion. Saquet shared that he hopes to get a walk-through scheduled for Council soon, but there is still some painting being done in the prisoners area that needs to be wrapped up before a tour can take place.

In terms of road works, Saquet reported that the public works staff have done some work on Davidson Street in preparation for Maple Leaf Construction to do the paving. A date on when that would happen was not confirmed yet.

West-Can Seal Coating came out this summer to do some microsurfacing of a few roads in the north end of town. Saquet added that they have also scheduled some contractors to come and do some crack sealing on the roads.

Zoning by-law on the east end Town council revisited the application by a landowner to rezone some property on the east end of town to residential multi-unit and institutional designation. This zoning designation would give some flexibility in what could potentially be developed on the property, as it would allow not only multi-unit housing, but also institutions such as a playground, church, school, community centre, etc.

There was a public hearing on July 16, allowing residents to make statements or arguments for or against the by-law. At the meeting, five individuals expressed concerns, objecting to the multi-unit residential zoning, and one written objection was received.

Councilors discussed their opinions on whether to pass second reading of the by-law or whether they believed they should amend it to make it residential single-unit, however, the majority were in favour of keeping the by-law as it was originally proposed.

Second reading passed on that zoning amendment by-law and third reading will take place at the next council meeting.

Close the lid tightly and refrigerate for several weeks before eating.

Garden salsa If you like hotter salsa, add more jalapeno peppers to your taste.

12 larger tomatoes, peeled 1 cup diced green pepper and diced 1 cup chopped cilantro 2-6 jalapeno peppers, 1 cup vinegar seeded and diced 1 cup tomato paste 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup fresh minced 2 cups chopped onion oregano or 2 cups each shredded 2 Tbsp. dried carrots and zucchini 1 tsp. pickling salt 1 cup diced red pepper Place all the ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a boil, turn down the heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally for about 30 minutes or until thickened. Place in hot, sterilized jars leaving 1/2 inch of headspace. Remove any trapped air bubbles by running a knife around the edges of the jar. Wipe jar rim and put the lids on.

Place jars in a canner of hot water. Make sure the jars are covered by 2 inches of water. Bring the canner back to a boil and process for 20 minutes. This makes 4 pints (4-500ml jars).

Province announces plan to increase minimum wage to $15 by October 2023 Banner Staff Neepawa Banner & Press The Manitoba government has announced their plans to increase the province’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by October of next year.

Premier Heather Stefanson appeared at a press conference on Aug. 18 to discuss the plan, noting that the government will be consulting with small businesses to help mitigate the effects of the wage hike on them. The increase will be a phased-in process, with increases on Oct. 1, 2022 and Apr. 1, 2023 before hitting their target next October.

“Our government recognizes the financial challenges many Manitobans are facing as a result of global inf lationary pressures,” said Stefanson. “Today’s announcement delivers on our commitment to making life more affordable for all Manitobans. This phased-

in approach will ensure small businesses remain strong and continue to grow while helping workers and their families get ahead by earning bigger paycheques.”

To make the wage increase happen, the government passed an amendment to Employment Standards Code earlier in the spring.

This move was made in response to the high inflation rate.

The current minimum wage rate is at $11.95 an hour, which will be jumping up by $1.55 to $13.50 on Oct. 1 of this year. Next April, the increase will be by 65 cents, to $14.15 an hour. The next adjustment in October of 2023 will bring the hourly rate to approximately $15. The province noted that this raise is in line with the projected consumer price index increase for the year.

“This wage increase will provide much-needed support to hard-working

Manitobans who have been burdened by soaring costof-living increases,” said Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services Minister Reg Helwer.

“Manitobans have worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are committed to relieving some of the financial strain.”

The government stressed, however, that they recognize the pressure this can put on small businesses, so they will be consulting with the industry to potentially create support programs

for the businesses to help them adjust to the higher payroll costs.

“Manitoba small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we are committed to helping them grow and thrive,” said Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen. “We are committed to working with our business community to address the impacts of this wage increase and f ind workable solutions together.”

110 years ago, Friday, August 30, 1912 It is a little puzzling, as well as disconcerting, to the town council that no tenders were received within the allotted time for the reconstruction of Park Lake dam. There has hitherto been so much criticism of the dam as originally built and annually rebuilt that it was anticipated that there would be numerous plans and tenders submitted for the construction of a permanent dam. But apparently our eminent eng ineers are a l l too busily and possibly more prof itably employed in other lines of work. Or, it may be that none have realized the importance to the town of having Park Lake dam rebuilt.

The lightning struck the chimney and passed down a join in the roof where tin had been laid under the shingles. The shingles were burny and large holes were left in the tin.

The fire was noticed

by Mrs. Gabler, Sr., who informed Mrs. J. Gladden, who i n t u r n adv ised telephone operator Miss Viola Cawston. The latter quickly summoned the help of a number of neighbours, whose prompt response controlled the blaze.

premier prize Sunday in the annual junior golf tournament at Neepawa Golf & Country Club. He also topped the Shoal Lake junior tourney Saturday.

40 years ago, Thursday, August 26, 1982 An isolated thunderstorm drifted over the Arden ridge Aug. 18, bringing high winds and hail, causing extensive damage to crops and buildings.

One area resident, Rita Harper, said “It looked like a winter storm coming”.

They could hear the winds about 10 minutes before hail began.

When it was all over, Harper said the ground was white with hail stones about one inch in diameter.

Morehouse well missed at Neepawa RCMP Public invited to farewell party for former staff sergeant on Sept. 9

By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press The Neepawa RCMP detachment is welcoming everyone to a special celebration on Sept. 9. Starting at 6:00 p.m. in the upstairs of the Neepawa Legion Hall, the doors will be open for a Come-and-Go party honouring retired staff sergeant Mark Morehouse.

Morehouse has long served the community and become a familiar face. With the Neepawa detachment already having held a more formal event internally, this will be a more casual opportunity that is open to the public.

“He was very well known in the community, so it’s another chance to get together and see him,” said staff sergeant Colby Argue.

Morehouse has served with the RCMP for 26 years overall, getting his start in the Toronto area in 1986. From there, he went to Carberry in 1997, before

going to Amaranth in June of 2005, staying there until June of 2008. That year, he started in Pukatawagan and remained until 2010, when he moved to Stonewall. His final station was in Neepawa, coming here in July 2012 and serving until July 2022.

Argue told the Banner & Press that the Neepawa detachment misses him, for his experience and more.

“He’s very knowledgeable about the area and a very personable man.

The members here really respect him– he was a mentor to all of us and he was always ready to help out,” said Argue. “The biggest thing we’re going to miss is his presence– his jokes and his personality.”

A first for Neepawa Now living in Brandon, Morehouse will still be able to be seen in Neepawa now and then. In an interview on the morning of Aug. 22, Morehouse confided that he isn’t quite ready for a full retirement yet. Hired just recently by the town, Morehouse has started working two days per week as a bylaw officer.

“I talked to the CAO and some of the other people at the Town Office and they were starting to look for a bylaw officer, they were getting busy enough to have one but not full time– and didn’t want full time.

I just wanted something to sort of keep my hands still into it and have a transition into my retirement in that way,” Morehouse explained.

This is a first for Neepawa, Morehouse noted,

as the town has never before had a bylaw officer.

Though his days will differ, depending what’s going on within the community, he is currently in town on Mondays and Tuesdays.

“It’ll be very interesting, and I like talking to the people of Neepawa. I have a good rapport here– and hopefully still will,” Morehouse laughed heartily.

“But I have a good rapport with them and I like being in Neepawa, Neepawa is a very nice place. Being around, gett ing a long with people… It’s been a pleasure working for the community.”

Neepawa is a prime location The retired staff sergeant expressed a deep gratitude to the community, noting that his wife has worked as a resource coordinator in the homecare sector at Neepawa for 23 years– starting before Morehouse moved here himself.

“People have treated us very well, the community has been great. We miss the people, where we are now,” Morehouse confided. “But it’s not that far away and we’ll come back to visit, have a place to golf, and I want to thank them for all the kindness that they’ve shown to me and my wife in the years that I’ve been here. We’ve made a lot of good friends.”

In his final thoughts, Morehouse gave Neepawa an additional plug, stating, “I encourage any members who are thinking about maybe coming to Neepawa. It has all the amenities that you need– good schooling, good recreational activities and financial institutions.”

“It’s a great place to bring up a family,” he added. “I’d really encourage any member who is in, or thinking about joining, and wanted to come back to Manitoba to come here.

It’s one of the prime spots to be posted.”

The award was presented to him by Dan Giesbrecht, Chairman of the MBBHOF Board of Directors. Also in attendance were Joe Wiwchar, Museum Administrative Manager, and Board Members, Morris Mott, of Brandon, Murray Zuk, of Souris, and Al Robertson, of Hamiota, brother, Glennis Scott and sister, Barb Mikulin plus other family and spouses. This award is given for commitment, contributions and dedication to the Hall of Fame. Gladwyn was one of the original founders of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame 25 years ago, served as the first chairman for six years, and remained a Board Member until this week.

Eleanor Rose Quilt Show displays passion projects of quilters

In conjunction with the Harvest Sun Music Festival in Kelwood last weekend, the Eleanor Rose Outdoor Quilt Show took place in the Arboretum Garden in the community. Hundreds of quilts were on display from several quilt guilds in the province, with several featured quilters. Many of the quilts have significant stories behind why they were made, including the quilts pictured here.

Pictured left: Manitoba quilter Dawn Piasta created the Ukrainian dancer quilt, which she entitled, Let Her Dance. Piasta has Ukrainian heritage, which inspired her to make this quilt, which she designed off a photo she had seen. The pattern stitching over the quilt was based off motifs used in Ukrainian pysanky egg decorations and she cross-stitched some of the designs on the dancer’s dress.

Pictured middle and right: These quilts, made by Jocelyn Marchuk, were created in memory of her friend who passed away from breast cancer. Marchuk made both of these quilts using fabrics from her friend’s wardrobe. She said her friend was always well dressed and always wore a diamond necklace, which inspired the pattern for the dress quilt (middle photo), which she made as a gift for her friend’s husband.

The other quilt (right) was a pattern test, using 105 different fabrics. Marchuk explained that she had enough fabrics for all but eight of the colours she needed, and in her friend’s wardrobe she found those eight exact colours. The phrase, “Life is good”, which is written on the quilt, were the last words written in her friend’s journal before she passed away.

Szucki named board president for Neepawa Titans Changes announced to hockey club’s board of directors

There have been several notable changes recently around the boardroom table for the Neepawa Titans. The junior “A” hockey club has confirmed that Ward Szucki has been selected to replace Ken Waddell as team president, who had served in that position for the team about seven years. Waddell said he is looking forward to seeing where the team goes from here.

“I have been happy to serve as team president since 2015. In that time, many younger people have stepped up to take on tasks with the team and that is a very good thing. The board has asked me to help out with advice once in a while and I am pleased to do that. The team has come through some tough times and we have a good board and very good management team lead by Ken Pearson,” said Waddell.

As for Szucki, he has been a member of the

board since 2018. He is a former player, with stints, not only in Neepawa and Winkler, but also in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He is currently the owner and operator of Guinn Brothers Memorials in Neepawa. The Banner & Press reached out to Szucki for comment on his new role

with the team, but were unable to reach him before the publication deadline.

The other executive members of the Neepawa Titans are Jamie Denbow (vice-president), Debra Kasprick (secretary) and Darian Major (treasurer).

As for the remaining board members, they in-

New billet coordinators Another quite significant change announced sees Tara McCarty and

Tammy Duddenhofer taking on the co-role of Billet Coordinators. They are stepping in for Mary-Ellen Clark, who after many years has stepped aside.

The Titans thanked Mary for opening up her home to dozens of players over the years as a billet.

Despite a mass exodus of veteran players from the program, Neepawa Tigers head coach Chidi Small is still optimistic about the high school team’s prospects for the upcoming football season. The Tigers held their first full practice with the pads and helmets on Monday, Aug. 22, in advance of the start of the Rural Manitoba Football League (RMFL) regular season.

For this year, coach Small expects that they should be able to suit up about 30 players, though it will mainly consist of a relatively inexperienced roster. He said that is because about half of last year’s team has graduated.

“While we do have some veterans that are returning, we have lost some players.

So, we will be a young team, especially on the defensive side of the ball,” said Small.

Despite the lack of experience, Small notes there is some genuine talent out there that could really excel as the season progresses. He said the only expectation for the year will be consistent growth from the players every week.

Notable returning players for NACI this season will include third year quarterback Ward Brister, as well as veterans Brody Pollock and Tarek Lapointe .

The Rural Manitoba Football League is a league of high school based football teams that plays nine man football. This season, the RMFL will play a series of exhibition games against three teams from Winnipeg and Brandon, in addition to their regular seven season games.

Submitted Neepawa Blue Dolphins On Sunday Aug. 21, the Neepawa Blue Dolphins splashed on over to Beausejour for the final meet of the season. All season the Blue Dolphins have been the one team that has really encouraged one another, and they were rewarded for being the lone team that continually cheered one another on. Hayden Delaloye has continued to compile some impressive golf accolades.

The latest for the 16-yearold from Neepawa has been the Junior Championship at the 89th annual Tamarack Golf Tournament.

Delaloye shot a 3-under round of 71 on Monday, Aug. 22 at the Clear Lake

Golf Course to claim the junior title. That performance was a full three shots better than Mack Sanderson, who had a round of 74 to earn second place.

Other victories this summer for Delaloye also included the Neepawa Golf & Country Club’s junior and men’s club championship, which he claimed the previous weekend.

Neepawa’s Daxx Turner proved to be more than capable in competing against the very best athletes in all of Canada. The 20-yearold, who was representing Manitoba at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, won a silver medal in the male triple jump event.

The former NACI student and current member of the University of Manitoba track team ensured his place on the podium with a leap of 15.47 metres. Femi Akinduro, of Ontario won gold with an impressive jump of 16.26m, while Turner’s Manitoba teammate Robbie Gerstner captured the bronze with a 14.92m jump.

Turner, who has been competing most of the year for the U of M, said this effort is a great way to cap

off the year.

“It’s been a long season, lots of jumps and that one was definitely up there for quality. I’m really happy to be out here competing for this team. It feels absolutely phenomenal to end the season on a high note,” said Turner.

Along with the performance in the triple jump, Turner also finished in sixth place in the high jump event with a jump of 1.93m. It has been a very good season for Turner, as earlier this year he was named the Canada West rookie of the year after an impressive first year with the Manitoba Bisons.

The 2022 Canada Summer Games recently concluded in Niagara, ON. Team Manitoba closed out the events with 37 total medals (10 gold, 10 silver and 17 bronze).

Classifieds Obituary Arlene Gladys Bucksovich

(nee Desjardins) On August 21, 2022, at 80 years of age, with her grandson Bryce close by, mom closed her beautiful blue eyes for the last time.

She fought her courageous battles with cancer, and later with dementia, with dignity and without complaint.

Arlene was born in October 1941 in Vita, MB to parents Philip and Jonina Desjardins.

Mom was predeceased by her two sons William, Jr. (1965) and Robbie (1981). Also predeceasing her were her parents, her sisters Edna and infant Jonina and brothers Allan, Pat and Cameron.

Arlene is survived by her daughters Cindy Kwiatkowski (Reg) and Bryce. Sherry (Justin) Hunt and Matthew Obsniuk and Christopher Obsniuk. Her sister Wendy Pavlick (Danny) and Cory and Brady. Also many nieces and nephews.

Mom grew up primarily in the areas of Piney, Deleau and Tenby. As a young girl, it was in Deleau that she met Leona who remained her friend for the rest of her life. Mom and her siblings often spoke with great fondness of many friends and good times while living in Deleau. Money was scarce; but, great friends and good neighbours were in abundance.

As a young lady, mom got a job working in the bank in Langruth and boarded there as well. She absolutely loved working in the bank and meeting the people in the area and at the boarding house. After she got married and lived a short time in Tenby, the family moved to Arden.

Here she helped raise her family and became a part of the community. Often working at the concession booth for sports days and at the rink and the hall. She was part of the Ladies Auxiliary and helped the United Church Women. Here she made many friends and the coffee pot was always on. She enjoyed playing cards, baking with friends and many visitors. Many people would share a difficult part of their personal life with my mom and when you told my mom a secret, it was a secret for the rest of her life. Many friends have passed; but, Dianne and Pearl remain and they remained true friends until the end.

Years later, mom moved independently to Neepawa and worked as a cashier and then with We Care and then later with Homecare. Mom became a very loved worker by many of her clients in need of care. She was always calming and treated the clients with respect. She also had a great deal of respect for her employers. When mom moved to Kinsmen Kourts she found an additional group of friends and card players. Many evenings were enjoyed playing Rummoli and other games.

Mom would gladly show nieces and nephews how to play board games, crib and other card games. She was always encouraging and enjoyed their company.

One of the greatest loves of Mom’s life was her three grandsons. She cherished them and was very much a part of their lives. Grandma always made the best pancakes, bacon and meatballs among many other things. She seemed to be able to put together a meal with ease.

With dementia increasingly getting worse, mom’s final home was at Country Meadows until she passed away.

She would often give the staff a little wave and asked for very little. She would try to carry a conversation or a pleasant thought as workers entered her room.

In lieu of flowers, people may make a donation to STARS or the charity of their choice. Mom was a big supporter of STARS and donations may be made to: Stars Foundation In Manitoba 570-1441 Aviation Pk NE. Calgary, AB. T2E 9Z9 A private service will be held at a future date.

Stanley Keith Dudenhoffer

Peacefully, with his family by his side, Stan passed away on August 18th, 2022, at the Neepawa Health Centre at the age of 82.

Stan is lovingly remembered by daughters Beth (Ken Gamble) and Erin (Chris Dale), by grandsons Jackson, William, and Connor,

by Ellen Snedden and extended family. Stan was predeceased by his parents Frank and Florence (Snow) Dudenhoffer and by his wife Mary Dudenhoffer (MacIver).

The only child of Frank and Florence, Stan was born March 23, 1940, in Neepawa MB. He attended Dumfries School and Neepawa Area High School. In his youth Stan was a member of the Halboro 4H Club and the Number 9 Neepawa Air Cadets. He participated in high school track and field, football and curling.

In 1959, Stan started his career at Canada Packers in St. Boniface in the livestock department. He held many positions over the span of his 36 year career before retiring from the sales department in 1996. It was at Canada Packers that Stan met his wife Mary and many lifelong friends. After retiring, Stan worked part time at the Gimli Liquor Mart for 15 years.

Stan and Mary were married in March of 1976 and would soon welcome daughters Beth and Erin. In 1981, they purchased the cottage at Sandy Hook where many happy family memories were made. Stan was an excellent cook and gardener and took pleasure in sharing these talents.

Stan loved sports! He was a member of the Sandy Hook Golf Club and was also a retired past president and honorary life member of the Heather Curling Club.

He especially enjoyed watching the Blue Bombers and never missed the chance to tease his grandsons about “his Leafs”.

After Mary’s passing in 2004, Stan met Ellen Snedden (Wadell) in 2009. They wintered together at Magic Valley in Weslaco Texas for nine years, surrounded by friends.

In 2018, they settled in Neepawa.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Neepawa Health Centre for their exceptional care and kindness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 28th at 11:00 a.m., at Neil Bardal Funeral Home at 3030 Notre Dame Ave, Winnipeg. A private interment will follow at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa.

Flowers are gratefully declined, but if desired, a donation may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

PROPOSAL: To Hire a Contractor to operate the Neepawa & District Handy Transit.

INTRODUCTION: Neepawa & District Handy Transit is a transportation service for the residents of the Town of Neepawa, Rural Municipalities of Langford-North Cypress (Langford portion), Glenella-Lansdowne, and Rosedale. The Neepawa & District Disabled Persons Assoc. Inc. is a non-profit board which hires a contractor to operate the transit service. The service provides transportation for older adults and mobility disadvantaged residents. It is designed to assist residents to medical appointments, personal, and recreational activities.

SCOPE OF WORK*: The operation of the Handy Transit is conducted by an independent Contractor. Opinion: Farmers and the ‘prove it’ generation

What is a farmer’s relationship with environmental and animal welfare certification programs? Would it be right to say that it’s complicated? On one hand, farmers feel targeted by those in the activist community who reject the realities of modern agriculture.

No genetically modified anything. No fertilizer. No pesticides. Small holdings with a few chickens, a couple of cows, and a pair of pigs. Farms drawn out of an idealized past of Ol’ MacDonald.

Some farmers are concerned that certification programs might be helping to promote this agenda.

The reality is different. Agriculture can rightfully claim to be a leader in rapid advancement in environmental management. These improvements are made possible by the adoption of technology and innovation, not their rejection. Widespread adoption of minimum tillage is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our soils. Improved soil management is the reason Saskatchewan does not blow into Ontario anymore, like it did in the 1930s. In the hog sector, the adoption of technology, manure injection for example, is helping to ensure organic nutrients are placed

where they are most accessible to crops, maximizing their value and minimizing potential environmental impacts. Research has shown that the hog sector’s environmental footprint has decreased significantly in the past 50 years. Hog farmers today produce more food with less environmental impact, a trend that is continuing because of investment of farmers’ money into research on innovative technologies and practices.

Divide impacting policy However, there is a divide between the view of agriculture held by some urban Canadians and daily farming practices. This is impacting how policymakers perceive agriculture and affecting the programs they implement. This gulf was exposed recently when the Government of Canada announced a target of a 30 per cent reduction in emissions from nitrogen fertilizer. Farmers felt they were unnecessarily targeted by policymakers who have not taken the time to understand the industry. Many believe that consultations were, at best, inadequate or even non-existent. Farmers are asking why there have been few attempts to collaborate with producers to align policies with agriculture initiatives that are already underway. There is a lack

of evidence that policymakers understand the effect this target will have on Canadian agricultural production or the impact on our economy.

Outdated portrayals of agriculture are causing a disconnect Why does this gulf exist? Part of the reason is the practice of wedge politics that pits one set of voters against another. All parties have been guilty of this. However, the divide is not just caused by divisive politics. Farmers and their representatives should also carry some of the responsibility for the gap between urban and rural perceptions because of the way in which we communicate the impacts of modern agriculture.

Poll after poll tell us that farmers are some of the most trusted folks in Canadian society. While I believe this to be true, I am concerned that this perception is based on an image of the 1950s farm and that it may not apply to the realities of modern, high-tech agriculture. In other words, Canadians may like farmers, but because of a lack of understanding of modern practices, they may not like what farmers do every day.

Manitoba sheep show and sale an action packed event

Justin Carvey operates a farm near Alexander.

Between his parents’ farm, Swindon Ranch, and his farm, JRC Livestock, they have sheep, goats and cattle.

Their numbers are always fluctuating, as he’s always buying and selling, but Justin says they have between 100 and 200 sheep at any time, and cycle through about 3,000 in a year. He buys and sells for breeding stock and meat. He does all his own sheering. This was his first

year entering anything in the show and sale. His pen of three showed and then sold in the sale afterward; it was the highest selling pen of ewe lambs. “It was a really good event,” says Justin, “It really opened people’s eyes to the upside potential to the sheep industry—all the different avenues: wool, milk, and of course meat.”

Organizers were extremely pleased with the turnout. With people coming and going both days, it’s difficult to estimate exactly how many people attended, but it’s estimated 700 to 800

total attendees, with up to 250 people at a given time.

This normally annual event has not been held since 2018.

The event had been held in Carberry in recent years, but it will likely return to Minnedosa next year. People came from Western Manitoba and beyond, with some people making the trip from as far away as Moosejaw, Yorkton and the Interlake region.

How to change the narrative surrounding agriculture Continued from Page A18 How do we change the narrative? As a first step, we need to stop apologizing for everything that comes with modern agriculture. It makes me cringe to see inaccurate portrayals, like advertisements with the little red barn next to a small field with an old cabless tractor, and three pigs and a duck playing in the foreground. How about showing a modern, multimillion dollar hog production facility? Please, we need to forget the picture of the plow and show a 75-foot airseeder precision planting into a minimum-till field.

We shouldn’t hide modern agriculture away from the public.

Second, we are talking to the “prove it” generation and need to demonstrate the accuracy of

what we say. This needs to include science-based assurance programs that set standards for environmental stewardship and animal welfare.

These standards need to be backed by regular audits and commitments to continuous improvements, based on the latest scientific research. The hog sector is transitioning to Canadian Pork Excellence (CPE), a set of programs that allow registered pork producers to demonstrate compliance with food safety and animal care requirements. Other livestock g roups have similar prog rams that help demonstrate responsible production. Farmers’ participation in these programs needs to be embraced by the industry and better promoted as part of the story of Canadian agriculture.

Politicians take their cues from the voters who elect them to office, the vast majority of whom come from urban Canada. Changing the narrative with consumers and citizens will also change the narrative with policymakers. It may take time to shift the conversation, but highlighting the benefits of modern agriculture and demonstrating, not just talking about, the industry’s existing commitment to management practices that enhance the environment and improve animal welfare will help prevent naïve and shortsighted policy announcements and burdensome regulations.

The Manitoba Sheep Association held their annual sheep show and sale Aug. 19-20 at the Minnedosa Fair Grounds. There was lots to choose from, including market lambs (fat lambs ready for market/slaughter), commercial ewes (females; pronounced “you’s”), purebred ewes and purebred rams (breeding males). Purebred breeds included Suffolk, Canadian Arcott, North Country Cheviot, Rideau Arcott, Dorset and Tunis, while commercial breeds available for sale included Cotswold, Suffolk, Rideau, Ile de France, Dorper, Blue Faced Leicaster and various crossbreeds.

The auction was actionpacked, but there were other activities including a shearing demonstration, a body conditioning presentation, and workshops on wool value and stock dogs.

Some specialty breeds often bred for their wool were on display: Icelandic, Blue Faced Leicester and Jacob (the latter having two sets of horns).

The canteen was serving up pulled lamb on a bun (how fitting!), and there were activities for children including arts and crafts and a scavenger hunt. There were 11 prize categories in the show part of the event, and over 90 lots of sheep

‘Save money, save time, save fuel’ Penno’s Hay Handler created for more efficient bale moving

Howard McKay, owner of Penno’s Machining and Manufacturing, has designed a new kind of bale fork allowing farmers to pick up two bales and space them out to their desired row width, or squeeze them together for loading onto a bale rack.

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press Farmers looking to maximize efficiency while moving bales can now get an implement designed just for that purpose. Howard McKay, owner of Penno’s Machining and Manufacturing in Eden, MB, has created the Hay Handler, a double bale fork that allows farmers to pick up two round bales at a time for loading and unloading their bale racks.

The design wasn’t as simple as putting two forks on a frame; each fork can be raised independently from the other so that the operator can pick up two bales side-by-side or one bale at a time. McKay said this design can reduce loading time by up to 40 per cent and cut unloading time by half.

“Save money, save time, save fuel,” he stated.

“The purpose of it originally was to be able to take two bales off of the hay rack and space them separately in two rows. So we started out with that idea, and we made a fork that would do that. But it wasn’t very suitable for picking bales up [out of the field], because you have to drag the first one to get the second one, or you had to set the first one beside the second one, and then pick two up,” explained McKay. “So we came up with this idea of raising the one up after the bale’s picked up, to keep it off the ground and from touching the other one. So then you can pick it up, raise it, pick up the other one, let it down, put them on the rack. And then when

you take them off the rack, you can spread them both apart and put them in two rows.”

The forks each raise upwards and outwards individually on the frame for picking up bales from the ground, but they can be set to work in tandem when picking up bales off the rack so that the forks stay at the same level as one another and the operator can just adjust the space between the bales for how far apart they want their rows.

McKay noted that the original idea of moving two bales at a time came from a customer’s request. The rest of the design came from trial and error and testing out the product. He explained it was a group effort and a lot of work from many different people went into creating the Hay Handler.

By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press A full and educational day was held at Carberry on Aug. 9. Organized by Manitoba Horticulture Productivity Centre Inc. (MHPEC), invitation was extended to all interested parties to participate in a field day event at both the Canada-Manitoba Crop Diversif ication Centre (CMCDC) of f-site and on-site locations.The organization is focussed on potato research, and had several plots on its off-site being used for ongoing experiments regarding best management practices.

These experiments were the topic of discussion for the morning and are hoped to yield useful results to be tested on a larger scale if successful.

Nutrient management talks were led by both Zack Frederick and Haider Abbas, with a particular focus on the application of nitrogen.

“Over five years of study, verticillium wilt was a priority concern,” said Frederick.

“Having appropriate levels of nitrogen and sulphur is essential for a healthy potato crop and keeping tuber sizes, along with economic output, consistent.”

Abbas added, “Potato tubers are very sensitive to water stress. Yield may be significantly reduced by water deficit. On the other hand, excessive water application may result in respiration stress and denitrification.”

Verticillium wilt is a soil-borne disease, sometimes also carried by seed tubers, that flourishes in crop stress induced by heat, nutrient deficiencies and insect damage. The fungal disease is transported by anything that moves the soil and can be harboured by other crops species without having visible disease symptoms.

With these factors in mind, a device known as a Piezometer was showcased.

The technology requires a small observation well and, using a logger, monitors fertilizer leaching. This includes any contamination to the available groundwater.

Living roots and black dot Andrea Hamilton provided an introduction to living root research. This research focuses on biomimicry– taking inspiration from naturally occurring solutions to problems and apply ing them to human engineering– and soil health. The overall goal for this research is to find ways to help producers keep living roots in the ground for longer periods in order to decrease the impacts of negative factors such as wind erosion.

“Right now, we’re looking at the use of companion crops, such as peas, with a nurse crop,” said Hamilton.

Ways to break the cycle of blackdot disease are also being studied. However, there was a signif icant outbreak of blackdot last year which heavily compromised the results of the research. This experiment is now continuing on-track and results of both this and the living roots experiment can hopefully be released in the future.

Biofumigation Biofumigation– the natural fumigation of a crop using other plants– was a topic of particular interest to this writer. The experiments being conducted at the CMCDC are centred around mustard as a fumigant, as many strains have biofumigant properties

that allow them to naturally overcome soil-borne diseases and pests. Verticillium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Pythium, Sclertinia, common scab and a range of nematodes and wireworms are just a few of the troublesome diseases and pests that mustard is a biofumigant for.

Since the biofumigant properties differ between strains, a variety of types are being used to determine which is most effective. These strains include Caliente, Cutlus, Andante, AAC Brown 18 and a male sterile hybrid.

Afternoon programs After a hearty and delicious lunch provided

by McCain, a series of additional talks for crop diversification and rotation were given.

Darren Bond, on behalf of Manitoba Agriculture, introduced an interactive farm software and worksheets intended to act as starting points for farm budgets to help producers make informed decisions for their operation.

Dennis Lange noted that Manitoba has an “economical and sustainable land base with a good transportation network”.

According to Lange, these factors make it an ideal location to grow the pea protein industry.

toba-grown peas is forecasted to grow as pea processing capacity increases in the province,” Lange explained. “Growing peas

Kirk said that Manitoba is the heart of Canada’s grain industry. In fact, it is the third largest producer of spring wheat and barley in the country, while the country as a whole has consistently ranked as one of the top global exporters of wheat across the world.

Lastly, Shawn Cabak highlighted integrated crop-livestock systems.

Most producers in Manitoba currently separate their livestock pastures from cropping systems. This means they rely on off-farm purchases of certified feed for their animal herds or fertility for their crop fields.

“This can increase pro-

duction costs, especially with the price premium for grain, as well as increase greenhouse gasses for transportation,” said Cabak. “Integrating crops and livestock on a multifunction operation could have multiple benefits and the potential to improve the profitability of these kinds of operations.”

Forage and Livestock specialists are currently working in collaboration with crop diversification centres to research and evaluate the production, environmental and economic benefits for growing “cash crops” with forage crops for grazing. This includes small grains and hay crops for livestock feed.

Ducks Unlimited Canada leads winter wheat surge in Manitoba

“I’m very happy,” says the Medora-area farmer.

“It’s the first year I’ve ever tried winter wheat. It’s turned out well, especially the way the spring went. It was a good thing to have it in, because it was looking like we weren’t going to get anything in.”

W it h a n e st i m at e d 700,000 acres unseeded in Manitoba this year because of excessive spring moisture, fall-seeded winter wheat was a timely choice for a growing number of farmers. Manitoba Agriculture reports 73,400 acres of w inter wheat seeded this year, up from 55,900 acres of winter wheat in 2021 and 32,000 acres in 2020.

Five reasons to grow winter wheat Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is leading the latest upswing with the only financial incentives available to Manitoba farmers and on-farm agronomic support throughout the growing season.

“I can give you five good reasons to grow winter wheat,” explains Alex Griffiths, a crop specialist with DUC. “Fall seeding saves precious time during the busy spring. The crop is early out of the ground and competitive against weeds, which can help manage herbicide resistance. Early harvest in August means warm, long days that allow the combine to keep rolling. Top it off with consistent high yields and good pricing.”

Griffiths says about 25

per cent of all winter wheat acres seeded in Manitoba in 2020 came from farmers taking part in DUC’s incentive program introduced that same year. This year, one third of DUC program participants had never grown winter wheat before, while another third had not grown it for five or more years.

DUC rebate sparks new acres “First and foremost, it was the DUC rebate,” explains Ryan Downey, a first-time winter wheat grower who ranches with his father near Coulter. “It also eased up the spring workload,” he adds. “This spring, we had a lot of neighbours that were jeal-

ous. A lot were wishing they had done it.”

DUC offers $20/acre up to $5,000, fertility advice from Western Ag – PRS CropCasting, full access to FarmLink’s new grain marketing tool ‘GrainFox’ and ongoing support from DUC’s winter wheat experts.

“We’ve been quite happy

with the Ducks Unlimited team,” says Downey. “Alex has been coming out here regularly, keeping an eye on things and giving us feedback on what we might do. They really helped us get going.”

“I encourage everyone to try winter wheat,” says Griffiths. “Use a rainy day to plant, or a morning when the dew stops the combine.

If the canola or 2-row barley is off early, those are excellent stubbles. Peas, summerfallow or unseeded acres can also work if planting early and paired with a winter-hardy variety like Wildfire or Goldrush.”

“I have no regrets. I’ll probably do it again,” says Van Mackelbergh. “We’re trying to keep to regenerative ag practices. That was a main goal. We were going to sow a rye cover crop after the peas until we found out about this program and decided to give it a whirl.”

Manitoba cattle producers critical to future of grassland species

Bill Alexander is a fourth generation cattle producer who farms near Lenore, MB. Bill and his wife Darla recently signed two Conservation Agreements with Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation (MHHC) to protect their grassland pastures and preserve the natural ecosystems on their farm.

“Our farm is strictly a cow-calf operation,” said Alexander. “The soil just isn’t suited to grain. The farm does much better in grass. Keeping it in pasture with perennial grass and forage cover really helps the soil.”

“My neighbour was telling me about conservation programs that provide financial support to cattle producers to protect wildlife habitat, including grasslands,” Alexander said. “Darla and I checked out the programs being offered by a few conservation organizations. After contacting Ian Fortune, a habitat conservation specialist with Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation, we found what we wanted.”

“It’s a great property,” said MHHC habitat specialist Ian Fortune. “Their farm happens to be located within the Mixed Grass Prairie target landscape and the North American Waterfowl Management Plan target landscape.

When Bill Alexander’s great grandfather Frank Alexander homesteaded the farm 137 years ago, it was a broad fescue grassland plain with some hummocky ridges, interspersed with lakes and sloughs. Today, the farm is a beautiful mix of grasslands, woodlands and wetland habitat.

“Most of the original Mixed Grass Prairie is now cultivated cropland, which is a challenge for wildlife and bird species that adapted to a grazed grassland ecosystem for 8,000 years prior to settlement,” said Fortune. “The key to protecting grassland species is supporting cattle producers and their grasslands. From a resource inventory, MHHC found that the Alexander farm is host to a variety of grassland birds like Sharp Tail Grouse and many species of waterfowl such as Blue Winged Teal, Mallard and Northern Shoveler.”

Continued from Page B2 From the original concept to completion, it took about two years for McKay to be able to start selling the product. He stated that the patent application was the one thing that took the longest.

“When I phoned the patent lawyer, he wasn’t very optimistic that something like this hadn’t been done before,” McKay recalled. “And then after [looking into it], he comes back and he says, ‘You know, I’m a little surprised somebody hasn’t thought of this.’”

McKay stated that he’s always wanted to create something new and get a patent for it, but he never thought it would actually happen.

Penno’s has sold eight units so far and they have four made ready for sale currently. The Hay Handler is manufactured right at Penno’s, with the exception of the powder coating being done at a business near Brandon. It takes about two weeks to make one.

The implement is compatible with most standard, large frame tractors with global loader brackets. McKay added if a customer needed it to fit something different, they could build a version as per their request.

Manitoba Fibre Festival coming this September

By Sarah Plosker The Farmers’ Advocate If you’re a fan of raw wool, hand-dyed yarn, knit socks and shawls, goat’s milk soap and all things hand-made, you cannot miss the 10th annual Manitoba Fibre Festival, back after a two-year hiatus, happening Sept. 9 and 10 in Winnipeg.

The event features too many unique attributes to list in just a short article.

There will be 75 vendors with tables of goods on display, showcasing their local f ibre, hand-made items, fibre art and more.

The talent, creativity and dedication of the individuals behind the small businesses will be on full display at this family-friendly event.

The Festival started in 2013 as a one-day event aimed at connecting Manitoba fibre farmers with artisans interested in using local materials. It quickly grew to include all aspects of fibre art. Organized by a small planning committee, the event comes together with the help of many volunteers, including members of various craft guilds and groups who demonstrate their skills at the Festival.

The Festival has a loyal community that continues to grow. In 2020 and 2021, when large gatherings were not possible, the Festival kept their community connections going through the Manitoba Fibre Trail, a self-guided weekend tour of farms, studios and small markets around southern Manitoba.

This year, about 2,000 visitors are expected at Red River Exhibition Place, where everything is again under one roof, including the sheep shearing demonstrations and the popular “Hall of Breeds”, featuring sheep and alpacas belonging to some of the vendors. Alpacas are becoming increasingly popular in Westman, with a number of vendors raising alpacas for their soft, warm fibre.

The entire family participates in the farm, including their 13-year-old daughter, who has helped with chores and raising the alpacas since she was able to walk!

They shear their own alpacas and sort the raw fibre based on colour and micron count to send out to different mills across Canada to be processed into yarn and finished products. Breeding decisions are informed through fibre tests—lower micron count means finer fibre, which translates into buttery-soft yarn, garments and accessories that feel good next to your skin. The Burtons were vendors at the very first Manitoba Fibre Festival 10 years ago, and are thrilled to be a part of this year’s event.

“I love attending the Manitoba Fibre Festival because I can show people how beautiful and soft alpaca fibre is and they can purchase raw fibre, rovings, and natural and hand-dyed yarns, along with all of the other products I carry,” she says.

At her farm, they follow the alphabet for naming their alpaca babies (called cria). They started with the letter A and this year, the babies were all named with the letter K. Besides low micron count, she says density, crimp and length of the fibre are also important.

Hoppers and moths Grasshoppers still remain a concern in some areas of the province. These pests may move as some crops mature or are cut.

In addition to grasshoppers, crickets are also showing at high levels in many areas of the province.

Although not generally regarded as a major concern in field crops, there have been past reports of them causing boll loss in flax.

This year, agronomists have noticed them feeding on flax bolls, wheat seeds and on canola.

Diamondback moths have been showing and t heir levels are being watched in some areas.

Currently no populations of the moth are above threshold at this time or reported as being controlled. However, some later seeded canola crops in the Northwest region were sprayed for a combination of pests, specifically diamond back moths, Lygus bugs and flea beetles.

That is, of the 100 plants Gavloski inspected, 13 were affected.

Of the affected plants, the average severity of it was rated by Gavloski as a three on a zero-to-five scale.

These results create a potential yield loss of approximately 50 per cent on infected plants, or 6.5 per

Manitoba Agriculture’s Crop Pest Update for Aug. 17, 2022 has identif ied that aphids are a primary concern for those growing soybeans. As well, for some areas in which small grains are being grown– though small grains are advancing past their vulnerable stages.

High levels of parasitism of aphids has also been noted in some areas.

For canola g rowers, Lygus bugs are currently something to watch out for. A field in the Eastern region was above the Lygus bug threshold and will be sprayed for them.

In the previous week’s report, there were also Lygus bug sprayings being conducted in canola fields in the Swan Valley area of the Northwest region.

Thankfully, in many cases, levels of these bugs are below economic thresholds and in some of the fields the majority of the populaion is early instar nymphs.

In early reports gathered

by Manitoba Agriculture, it appeared that oat crown rust had set in late and was not of economic concern.

However, John Gavloski, entomologist for Manitoba Agriculture, heard in following weeks that some oat fields in the SourisGlenwood area were heavy with infestations.

“I visited one of them and saw for myself that it was as serious as reported,” said Gavloski. “One’s trousers quickly developed orange knees after a walk though the crop.”

Gavloski added, “The pronounced evidence of the telial stage (black pustules) suggests that this crop was infected early. A fungicide had been applied at flag leaf timing. The producer wondered whether a second application would be of economic benefit. In the end, they chose to desiccate the crop as a pre- harvest treatment. While this might stop the advance of the disease, however, done too early, that is before the hard dough stage can also result in low bushel weight and a greater proportion of thins.”

Unfor tunately, Gavloski noted, the cultivar was Souris. This cultivar is moderately susceptible (MS) to crown rust. There are also varieties available that have an “MR” or “R” raiting for this disease.

“Incidentally, the field was within a few miles of the Souris River where the alternate host– buckthorn– will harbour the inoculum that re-infects oats each year,” Gavloski reported.
