By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press The creative works of Neepawa’s Hazel M. Kellington school students, all from Kindergarten to Grade 4, were on display at ArtsForward. On Dec. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., a gala event was held at the gallery, to which the parents of the students were all invited to come and view the art and enjoy some cookies.

The exhibit was on display for the month of December.

“I wanted the kids to get a feel for what it’s like to have their work displayed in the gallery, because this is where all of our famous artists start out,” said Yvonne Sisley, administrator for ArtsForward.

“Doing things like this in elementary school– it’s so cool, all the different art work, and it’s so special to be able to get a look at the art work of all these kids.”

A couple of kids braved the interview spotlight to share a little bit about their

crafts with NACTV. Both kids, Riley and Kylee, made their own version of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

“We used a lot of lines, because that’s how Van Gogh painted,” said Riley.

“You can see them in the hills, the tree and creating the wind, going all around the stars and the moon.”

“It felt really good [to finish them],” said Kylee.

Also among the Starry Night drawings were depictions of snowmen, bears and more.

Province announces tougher COVID-19 rules Banner Staff Neepawa Banner & Press The Province of Manitoba has announced tougher public health restrictions just a week before Christmas. Effective Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 12:01 a.m., private indoor gatherings are reduced to the household plus 10 guests if everyone is vaccinated. For anyone who is unvaccinated, the limit is the household plus five guests. Children 12 and under

are excluded from vaccine requirements.

As well as that alteration, other changes included in the announcement are as follows: • Gyms, movie theatres, museums, libraries are reduced to 50 per cent capacity with proof of vaccination required everywhere except libraries.

• Indoor and outdoor sporting and recreation capacity is reduced to 50 per cent for spectators. While games and practices can continue, no tournaments

will be permitted.

• Large group gatherings will be limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of immunization.

• Restaurants and licensed premises are limited to 50 per cent capacity and seated service only with a maximum of 10 people per table and proof of immunization required.

• Faith-based gatherings are limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of vaccination, or 25 per cent capacity or a total of

25 people, whichever is lower, when proof of vaccination is not required.

Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial public health officer, and Health Minister Audrey Gordon made the announcement late Friday afternoon.

The new health orders will last for three weeks and are currently scheduled to expire on Jan.11, 2022.

Moments in Riding Mountain National Park– 2021 in review

As the year 2021 recedes into the past, I am reflecting on the general nature of, well, nature over the past year.

This year, my nature observations are split between Prince Albert National Park (PANP) and Onanole. The overarching theme is the drought, or near-drought, conditions that prevailed in both locations.

While a few spots seemed to attract enough rain to secure a harvest, I observed some pretty short wheat crops, patchy canola, and fields of oats getting cut for greenfeed while driving to and from Saskatchewan over the summer.

On top of hard hit pastures and poor crops, I suspect that the drought had some knock-on effects.

For example, it appeared to be a banner year for wasps and hornets.

I know that Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) and area had a lot of wasps, but PANP had the most yellowjacket nests I have ever seen. There were nests in every type of terrain, and sometimes there were nests within five or six metres of each other, something unheard of in a normal year, as they generally don’t get along with their neighbours.

The best time to observe these nests is during the fall, when the leaves have fallen and the nests begin to break

apart and fall out of the trees. In PANP, the paper from the nests could literally be spotted everywhere this autumn.

Luckily, the occupants of these nests must have been generally content, as there were relatively few reports of visitors getting stung, and I know that I escaped without a single incident.

Wild fruit crops in PANP were poor, again due to drought and some late frosts, although there were enough blueberries to fill bears’ stomachs. What was truly amazing, however, despite the dry conditions, was the production of nuts on the beaked hazel here in RMNP. I literally have never seen a crop like this past summer. Oh to be a squirrel in this time of riches!

The great hazelnut crop will have to make up for the poor spruce cone crop.

Spruce trees produce cones sporadically, with years of plenty and lean years, and this year, the cones are pretty hit and miss. Where there is a good crop, the crossbills are hitting them hard.

This spring, black bears were seen in great numbers in RMNP, with as many as 20 bears observed on a drive from Wasagaming to Dauphin along Highway 10.

Once the bears ended their spring rush of harvesting dandelions in the ditches, though, it appears that there wasn’t a lot of consensus as to whether this was a busy

bear year or not.

Some of the people I polled on Facebook reported seeing and encountering more bears than normal, but others reported a normal year.

Thus, the jury is still out as to whether the drought (and reduced hunting) has had an impact on black bears’ reproductive success and survival. We’ll see what next spring brings.

As for smaller animals, it appears that there is a relatively high number of snowshoe hares and ruffed grouse about. Cold, wet springs are hard on the young of both species, so this past spring and summer’s sunshiny days likely helped their survival rates.

There is also a seemingly unending parade of red squirrels in my wood pile. If I was a fisher or pine martin,

I suspect that I would find the coming winter very pleasurable.

Besides the drought, a couple of other weather items are worth noting. As mentioned in a previous article, the -45°C temperatures in February are some of the coldest I can remember, while this summer and fall were unusually warm.

As part of this trend, Clear Lake officially froze over on Nov. 25, which is pretty late in relation to 40 years ago, but is more of the norm for the last couple of decades.

So, there you have it, my take on 2021. It will be interesting to see what treats and tricks nature and weather will bring in 2022.

A

s a child, our family celebrated the opening of the gifts on Christmas Eve. This was due, in part, to the way it had always been done, and to the fact that Christmas Day was shared with both sets of grandparents.

By receiving our gifts on the evening before, we got to play with toys, if toys were the gift, or read the book or start the puzzle. There was no rush to the process. However, the chores had to be completed, supper cleared and baths accomplished. In retrospect, this was no mean feat. The chores involved cattle and sheep, or chickens or hogs, at times, sundry combinations of the aforementioned, along with a horse or two. The cleaning of the house had to be acceptable in mom’s eyes. That included ‘wet dusting’ and damp cloth swiping baseboards, door frames and window sills, and washing, waxing and polishing the tile floor in the kitchen/dining room. Properly done, even the chairs were inverted on the table top and their bases scraped clean. As I mentioned– no mean feat! Bath time, in the old house, and for a few years in the new house, involved pumping water, heating water and discarding water. But Christmas was a high holiday.

The gifts were basic, supplemented by the gift exchange at school. I recall the year I received a doll, a gift I did not wish for, or appreciate. My younger sister did. That was the winter our small house was damaged by fire– to the point is needed to be replaced– and the dolls suffered smoke and heat damage. I gladly threw out the doll, however, my sister kept the girl with the twisted face for decades. The year I received a set of wooden skis was good. The neighbourhood all enjoyed them as we were propelled through the ditches by a slow moving car!

Books were always treasures, and the chocolate covered cherries that my paternal grandmother gave every child, every Christmas, were, in my world, a gift to be re-gifted!

It was the family gatherings that became so significant. Dozens of cousins collecting for food and laughter, and insight into the lives of the adults. The stories about Uncle Walter and Uncle Bill seemed improbable. Turns out, they were real! Both of my grandparents had real trees in the living room. Huh, there probably were only real trees back then! The string of lights I loved best looked like flickering candles. Strings of tinsel, carefully removed to be reused, and blown glass ornaments. With those memories so treasured, it is not surprising that I, who never buys souvenirs, selected several from a glass blowing shop in Moscow, and safely transported them home. The little bird with real feathers that clips on a branch, matched by a replica clip on candle. Carefully stored from season to season, with the same unbounded joy each time they surface.

There were the oranges, best I ever tasted, the nuts, the peanuts and the hard candies. They came in bowls at the grandparents’, in paper bags at the school and church concerts. Hard white candies with red roses imprinted through them. Thankful for family and friends, thankful for memories, thankful.

nlike the others profiled so far in this ser ies, the shepherds figure prominently in the Christmas story. They are the ones to whom the angel appeared on the night Jesus was born.

They are the ones who received the announcement of good news and they were invited to go to Bethlehem, find the place of Jesus’s birth and pay him a visit.

When we read this story, especially against the backdrop of a beautifully decorated church sanctuary, it seems to exude an air of magic, mystery and romance. But there was nothing magical, mysterious or romantic about the life of a shepherd.

Raising sheep was hard work. Good shepherds spent most of their time with their sheep. Theirs was a high stress job. During the day, they led the sheep to green pastures and quiet pools of fresh water.

They were constantly on the alert– looking and listening for signs that a sheep might be ill or that a predator was close by. And

However, do not forget the future and the thought of what is awaiting us if we know Jesus as our personal saviour. He is waiting for us in our Heavenly Home.

We will rejoice and we can celebrate.

At night, when all the sheep were safely in their pens, the shepherds could relax and unwind after a busy day. They would remain in the fields and would often sleep close to the door of the pen, so they could take action if thieves or predators were detected.

And that is where the shepherds were on the night Jesus was born– sitting with their sheep on a hill just outside Bethlehem, enjoying the serenity around them and (I would think) quite happy to be far away from the noise and confusion in Bethlehem itself.

But their peace and quiet would not last forever. St. Luke tells us that they were suddenly surrounded by a

a divine baby, who would save mankind from their sin by dying a cruel death on a cross.

I hope and pray that we all can celebrate this big event. Many are grieving and it will be difficult to celebrate. There have been disasters all over the world and some might feel bitterness and have no joy or peace.

light that was brighter than the noon day sun; and that in the midst of that light was a being unlike anything they had ever seen before. Their reaction was the same as yours or mine would be in a similar situation– heart-stopping fear.

The shepherds had good reasons to be afraid. Appearances of heavenly messengers were very rare and they almost always brought bad news.

But the angel told them that there was no need to be afraid. The news was good. The Messiah– the one for whom the people of ancient Israel had been hoping and praying– had been born in Bethlehem.

They would f ind him wrapped in bands of cloth and laying in a manger.

St. Luke tells us that they hurried to Bethlehem,

found the newly born Messiah and then, on their way back to their sheep, told everyone they met what they had heard and seen.

Of all the people who were in and around Bethlehem on the night Jesus was born, the shepherds were the only ones who had the time to listen to the angelic messenger and heed the invitation to go to Bethlehem and visit their newly born Messiah. The rest were far too busy and would have either missed or ignored the message.

What about us? Will we make time in our busy Christmas schedules to spend a few quiet moments in ref lection and prayer, thanking God for all the blessings we have received thanks to our faith in Jesus Christ? And, if we have the opportunity, will we share a story or two with people whose hearts could use a fresh injection of hope?

The shepherds did what they could to spread the news of their Messiah’s birth. I know of no better way to honour them than by following their example.

Monoclonal antibody therapy is available to treat COVID-19 symptoms Publisher’s note: This letter from Dr. E.J. Bow was sent to the Banner & Press on Sunday, Dec. 19.

In November of 2019 reports of a new transmissible viral respiratory infection began to emerge from Wuhan, China. By March of 2020 the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) had recognized this as due to a novel Coronavirus labelled severe acute respiratory system Coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The clinical disease caused by this virus was called COVID-19 (Coronavirus infectious disease, 2019). The spread of this virus by infected respiratory droplets and aerosols galvanized public health teams and infection prevention and control services to develop strategies to limit transmission and spread of the infection.

It has been recognized that COVID-19 represented a spectrum of disease ranging from mild “cold”-like symptoms to severe life-threatening pneumonia requiring hospital care for supplemental oxygen therapy, anti-coagulation therapy and in many cases admission for intensive care and mechanical ventilation. Further, investigators recognized that COVID-19 disease in infected persons may progress from mild to moderate to severe to life-threatening over a period of one to two weeks from symptom onset. Moreover, severe COVID-19 has been found to be more a function of the body’s uncontrolled late response to the virus rather than to tissue damage due to virus replication itself. Anti-viral treatments for established severe COVID-19 disease have not been consistently effective, particularly when they have been applied late when virus replication is no longer driving tissue damage.

The numbers of infected persons who require hospital level care for severe COVID-19 disease have overwhelmed our healthcare resources and place intolerable burdens upon our communities. Strategies to prevent person-to-person transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been the basis of our public health recommendations. Compliance with these recommendations has been difficult. Accordingly, vaccination along with public health restrictions have become the primary strategies to prevent infection and to reduce the burden of COVID-19 in our communities.

The best candidates for anti-viral treatment strategies for COVID-19 appear to be those asymptomatic persons who have sustained an exposure to an individual with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection and those with early mild-to-moderate COVID-19 disease. Such treatments are intended to prevent progression to more severe COVID-19 disease, reduce the need for hospitalization and sequelae such as ICU admission, mechanical ventilation and death.

Commercially prepared monoclonal antibodies (e.g. bamlanivimab with or without etesevimab or casirivimab plus imdevimab) directed at the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 surface spike protein interrupt the attachment of the virus to protein receptors on the respiratory epithelium thus aborting the virus replication cycle. These agents administered within 7 days of onset of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 symptoms have been effective in reducing the need for hospitalization or death by 70-80 per cent in higher-risk patients with one or more pre-existing co-morbidities such as kidney, lung or heart disease, diabetes or immune suppression.

Spruce Plains RCMP report

By Cpl. Jacob Stanton Spruce Plains RCMP During the week of Dec. 13 to Dec. 19, Spruce Plains RCMP dealt with 38 police activities.

Dec. 13: RCMP responded to an abandoned house fire in Birnie. The entire structure was destroyed and there was insuff icient evidence to proceed further. Police received a report of a vehicle vs deer collision in the Municipality of WestlakeGladstone. There were no injuries and minor damage to the vehicle.

Dec. 14: RCMP were dispatched to a report of a disturbance at a property in Gladstone. The complainant heard noises in their yard and thought someone was trying to steal their car. Police attended and saw deer in the yard near the complainant’s car; the matter was determined to be unfounded. Police responded to a commercial alarm in Neepawa, which was determined to be false.

Dec. 15: RCMP responded to a report of assault in Kelwood. Police

attended and spoke with both involved parties, who had calmed down. No charges were laid after it was determined no assault took place. Police received a report of a hit and run to a vehicle in Plumas. There was insufficient evidence to proceed further.

Dec. 16: RCMP were dispatched to an abandoned 911 call in Neepawa.

After investigation, it was determined it had been a pocket dial and no police assistance was required.

Police responded to a disturbance in Neepawa, where an argument was taking place. Upon police arrival, everyone had calmed down and there were no further reported issues.

Dec. 17: RCMP received a report of a stolen snowmobile in the RM of Rosedale. There was insuff icient evidence to proceed further. Police responded to a report of a person laying unconscious on the road near Basswood.

Police arrived and EMS reported that the individual was conscious and alert, and was then taken to the

hospital to treat weather related injuries and to sober up.

Dec. 18: RCMP responded to a commercial alarm in Neepawa. Police attended and discovered that staff members inside the building had accidentally set off the alarm. Police received an anonymous call reporting an individual was in possession of drugs in Minnedosa. The caller was heavily intoxicated and did not provide any further information to police, therefore, there was insufficient evidence to proceed further.

Dec. 19: RCMP received a complaint of a person breaching a court order in Minnedosa. Police attended and determined there was no court order in place. The allegation was deemed unfounded.

Police responded to a domestic assault in Neepawa.

Both parties were arrested, charged and released with conditions and a future court appearance.

RCMP conducted 10 traff ic enforcement actions during this reporting period.

Turkey leftovers

As the family cook, the best part of Christmas dinner was the leftovers! There are so many wonderful things to make from leftovers. Hopefully this Thai turkey salad recipe will help you use up those turkey leftovers.

Thai turkey pasta salad 250 g of vermicelli noodles or very thin noodles 2 carrots, cut into match stick pieces 3 cups cubed turkey 1 stalk celery, sliced 1/2 cup diced onion 1 red pepper, thinly sliced 3 cups chopped broccoli 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 3 Tbsp. dry roasted peanuts, chopped Dressing: 1/3 cup vegetable oil 3 Tbsp. lime juice 1 Tbsp. rice vinegar 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tsp. grated ginger 2 Tbsp. peanut butter 2 Tbsp. soya sauce 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes 1/4 tsp. pepper In a large pot, cook the vermicelli according to package instructions. In the last two minutes, add the carrot sticks. Drain vermicelli and carrots and place in a large bowl to cool.

In the meanwhile, prepare the dressing. Mix all the dressing ingredients together until well blended. Add the dressing, turkey, celery, onion, red pepper, broccoli and cilantro to the vermicelli. Mix well and sprinkle with the peanuts.

Holiday greetings from Manitoba RCMP officers the Municipality of respond to stabbing North Cypress-Langford incident in Westbourne Submitted RCMP Media Relations On Dec. 15, 2021, at approximately 8:50 am, Manitoba RCMP off icers responded to a report of a stabbing located off of Highway 16, in Westbourne, Manitoba.

The preliminary investigation has determined that a male driver, along with a female passenger, picked up a male hitchhiker on Highway 16 in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone. After being picked up, the hitchhiker reportedly attacked the driver without provocation.

The driver, who had been stabbed, was able to pull over to the side of the road.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and f led on foot.

Numerous officers from Portage la Prairie, Amaranth and Neepawa detachments, along with Police Dog Services, immediately responded to the area.

Highway 16 and Highway 50. Officers attended and located the male suspect, who was observed to be carrying an edged weapon.

There was a confrontation between the suspect and the responding officers. An officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was struck.

Officers immediately provided firstaid until local Emergency Medical Services arrived. The suspect, however, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. The deceased has been identified as a 31-yearold male from Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

An edged weapon was recovered from the scene.

The male victim was sent to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and are taking carriage of the officerinvolved shooting investigation. Manitoba RCMP continue to investigate the stabbing incident.

Greetings from the Municipality of North Cypress Langford (NCL) as 2021 comes to an end.

The world is still battling the Coronavirus pandemic, almost two years since it began. We are in a more optimistic position this year, because of the release of vaccines in late 2020 and a large uptake by Manitobans to receive the vaccine. Our health care workers are still dealing with extremely ill patients and we owe them a great deal of thanks. Please continue to follow public health and let’s work hard to keep our citizens healthy.

High temperatures and low precipitation made conditions very dry and resulted in large fires burning in our province. A state of emergency was declared in NCL when a large fire south of Carberry came close to the municipality.

The Municipality would like to thank all first responders and citizens for their tireless work during this emergency.

The Municipality was pleased to hear the announcement of a new hospital for the town of Neepawa. The current building, which is used by many NCL residents, is aging and will be replaced. Projected opening of the new facility is 2025.

There were some positive steps taken to remove the tax burden on farmers this year, through some amendments to school tax collection. This will help keep Manitoba produce competitive in Canada and the world.

Jas. A. McGill has a va luable young sablecoloured collie dog that comes to town frequently and occasionally makes long stays. The other day, he retired home after a long absence with a piece of rope on his neck, indicating that someone had him tied up and is apparently trying to capture him.

Habitat protection made easy through partnership agreement

By Wayne Hildebrand Submitted Benito area grain farmer John Sandborn recently donated 58.5 acres of pristine woodland habitat to the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation (MHHC) through a Conservation Agreement. The agreement will protect the habitat forever.

The Swan Lake Watershed District partnered with John and MHHC to facilitate signing of the Conservation Agreement.

The mixed coniferous and deciduous forest is located south of Benito on the north slope of the Duck Mountains. It provides a home to many birds and animals, including deer, moose,

elk, bear, lynx, wolf and the occasional cougar.

“Originally, I visited with Swan Lake Watershed District manager Stephanie Reid in their Swan River office to get information on a pollinator program,” said landowner John Sandborn. “I was interested in boosting pollination and yields of the crops I grow. While I was there, Stephanie told me about the MHHC Conservation Agreements (CA) program to protect wildlife habitat.”

One benefit to habitat donations is MHHC can provide a tax receipt to the landowner for the value of the habitat. A donated CA protects

the habitat in perpetuity by an easement registered on the title of the land. The land itself remains in private ownership.”

“My Swedish grandfather Johan Sundbom homesteaded the farm in 1920,” said Sandborn.

“Three Sandborn generations have conserved the 58.5 acres of forest habitat in its natural state.

Volunteers help NCMC spread holiday cheer

Volunteers and staf f of Neepawa Communit y Ministries Centre (NCMC), the local branch of the Salvation Army, were busy from Dec. 15 to Dec. 17, packing and distributing Christmas hampers.

A total of 129 families in the community benefited from the Christmas hampers this year. The hampers were packed with gifts and food supplies to help the recipients celebrate the holidays.

History is full of great ideas and important people associated with those ideas. From Mr. Dunlop’s idea of the rubber tire, to Colonel Sanders’ KFC, to the modern communication by way of satellites in space and so on.

But Christmas; who would have thought that such a seemingly ordinary event, the birth of another baby– and born in a stable– would have caused such a stir?

From local shepherds really unconcerned with the crowds in Bethlehem, to wealthy lawyers in another country causing them to leave home with expensive gifts packed, make the journey by primitive mode, just to see another baby.

Whoever thought of Christmas, without a doubt, was very– became very special. Let’s inquire of those who had a part, for someone, or ones, must feel they are responsible for making Christmas what it is.

The prophet Isaiah: “May I be first? In the order of importance, the announcement of such a world event was given to me; ‘His Name shall be called Immanuel’; did you get it?

‘Immanuel’, God standing on earth among us.”

“And may I also be granted the privilege of pointing to the exact location on planet earth where Christ the Lord would be born, and that 750 years before he came” speaks the prophet Micah, “This surely makes my prophetic word, in anyone’s thinking, of great importance.”

“Don’t forget,” says the angel Gabriel, “God gave me the honour of announcing His plan to send His Son into the world, even to the baby’s name.”

“But I became the mother of God’s Son,” said Mary.

“Christmas is really because of me.”

“It was me, Joseph, who was responsible for seeing that Mary got to Bethlehem. I was required to go to Bethlehem, not Mary. But I could not leave her alone.”

“How about me,” brayed the donkey, “If I had faltered along the way, the baby would have been born somewhere along the way, discrediting the prophetic place of Jesus’s birth.”

“I’m too busy for your questions,” said the innkeeper.

“If it wasn’t for my stable, the couple would have had to go on to the next town; think of that.”

And the shepherds– “This would have been just another baby born, if it hadn’t been for us voicing to the world the birth of a special child. We were the only media reporters to announce the Saviour.”

“The great joy was given to us,” chorused the angels.

“To lead the heavenly choir in the royal anthem, ‘Glory to God in the highest’, truly was the real announcement of Christmas.”

Lastly, the wise men spoke up solemnly, “Our message was not just announcing a reigning monarch, the outcome of a political choice, but speaking with divine authority, we declared this child to be the King of the Jews.”

There was a movement, and sweet sound from the crude little crib where a baby lay. As each bent close to the infant, His bright eyes opened and a look of peace and love came over His face. The entire cast was touched with a sense of awe and wonder. Each bowed their heads and worshipped. There seemed to echo the words to change all thought; “His Name shall be called Immanuel… God with us.”

In recent 20 months or so, many of us have noticed an interesting phenomenon in mass media. Even the secular politicians, medical professionals, reporters began using the Bible verses to win an argument and promote something into the minds of general public.

One of the most common ones was “love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:34-40), in the context of getting vaccinated against COVID-19. If you love your neighbour, you just must go and get a shot. If you choose to stay away from the shot, it is assumed that you do not love your neighbour.

There is a simple and effective rule of the Bible interpretation. The Bible interprets the Bible. It means that you need to study a verse or commandment in view of the entire Scripture.

If you do not do that, you risk to misinterpret God’s Word and apply it wrong in your life and in the lives of others. God does not take it lightly when His Word is distorted and used out of the context.

In the Gospel of Matthew 22:34-36, Jesus got a question from the Pharisees ( Jewish religious sect of that time) regarding the greatest commandment in the Law of Moses.

Christ’s response was simple and clear in verses 37-39: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment.

The second is like it, ‘You shall your neighbour as yourself.’” The Lord Jesus quoted here from Leviticus 19:18. We should study these two commandments together. They are inseparable. You cannot really love your neighbour if you do not love God with all your heart, mind and soul. God is the source of true love.

How can you love your neighbour if you heart is filled with idolatry of all kinds? I need to mention one more thing here. In the Bible, which is God’s Word to human race, true love is always mutual. It is never one-way traffic. You love in spite of. You love no matter what. You just love. It is like a good and strong marriage. You love even when you disagree with your spouse. You continue loving your child even, if your child disagrees with you.

God of the Bible expects the exclusive worship from His followers. He desired to be loved exclusively by those who worship Him. Continued on Page 18

Titans surpass mid-point of MJHL season in a relatively positive position

The Neepawa Titans have gone into the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s (MJHL) Christmas break on a bit of a hot streak.

The Junior “A” hockey club went 4-1-1 in December, placing them right in the middle of a tight battle for a play-off spot in the MJHL’s Western Division.

Neepawa head coach and general manager Ken Pearson said that he and the rest of the coaching staff challenged the players at the start of the month to set some pretty lofty goals.

He added that the team hit those lofty benchmarks.

“We had a meeting prior to the start of the series of games against the [Winnipeg] Blues. We challenged them to put together a realistic goal and they said, ‘We think we can get nine of 12 points from these upcoming games.’ That’s what they

did, they focused and put in the effort and did a good job of it,” said Pearson.

Overall, the team has an 11-13-2-4 record after 30 games. While that is still an under .500 winning percentage, it’s still the closest the franchise has been to a winning record this late in the season in almost a decade. Pearson noted that the mindset of the players needs to be one of striving for more than that.

“The success or failure of other [Neepawa] teams isn’t this team’s success or failure.

Realistically, this team could be .500, but we’ve lost more games in overtime or shootout this first half than almost all the rest of our division combined. So, if we got three of those [six] points, we’d be in a better position right now. The locker room understands that and is motivated to change that up in the second half of the season.”

stating that the team does seem to be getting more and more confident with each game played. He stressed that in the new year, the players must come back to the rink ready to go, as every series of games against division opponents

will be extremely significant.

The Titans are currently scheduled to play the Selkirk Steelers on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at the Yellowhead Centre.

Letter to the editor: A means of managing limited health care resources Continued on Page 5 Moreover, the duration of COVID-19 symptoms may be reduced by about four days and the duration of high viral loads may be reduced by 70 per cent. This treatment effect is also seen among fully vaccinated persons who get breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection resulting in mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and who receive antiSpike monoclonal antibody therapy. The number of mildly symptomatic COVID-19 patients that need to be treated in order to prevent one hospitalization has been estimated to be around 4. When administered to previously uninfected persons within 96 hours of exposure to persons with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection (post-exposure prophylaxis), casirivimab/imdevimab may prevent the development of COVID-19 symptoms by over 80 per cent.

To prevent one hospitalization under these circumstances, the estimated number of such patients that need to be treated has been higher at ~ 30.

Passive immunization with anti-Spike monoclonal antibodies may also be considered for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection among high-risk persons with one or more co-morbidities (pre-exposure prophylaxis).

One recent unpublished clinical trial demonstrated a 77 per cent reduction in acquired SARS-CoV-2 infection among patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease or lung disease. Patients who are solid organ or stem cell transplant recipients or those with haematological malignancies who may not be able to develop a protective immune response to COVID-19 vaccines may yet be potential candidates for this kind of passive immunization strategy.

Anti-Spike monoclonal antibody therapy is available now in Manitoba and is being used for patients with early mildto-moderate COVID-19 disease. By reducing the numbers of patients whose symptoms progress to the point of needing medical in-hospital care, this strategy has the potential for alleviating some of the pressure on our over-burdened health care system. A systematic approach is needed, however. Patients who develop COVID-19 symptoms need to be rapidly tested and assessed for eligibility for anti-Spike monoclonal antibody therapy in a timely manner (for example, within 7 days of symptom onset). Patients must have ready access to adequately staffed dedicated infusion sites for the safe intravenous or subcutaneous administration with facilities to monitor for adverse events independent of our already full regional emergency departments. The efficacy of the anti-Spike monoclonal antibody products against all variants of concern is not uniform and the performance of the available products against Omicron is not yet fully understood. Accordingly, medical follow-up is needed for the assessment of treatment failure.

Whether early anti-viral therapy based upon anti-Spike monoclonal antibody products (or even new anti-viral drugs when they become available) can diminish the tsunami of COVID-19 patients appearing at the doors of our overloaded regional hospitals as infection rates continue to climb remains to be seen; however, Manitoba has the tools, the expertise, and the experience to make this happen. A vision for approaches like this for managing our limited health care resources is needed now and the clock is ticking.

Letter: New hospital encouraging Fantastic news that Neepawa is to have a new hospital built. Not only is it to be new but larger and with more services than the current hospital has to offer. Those responsible for this leadership decision are to be commended for their vision of the Neepawa area. Those who have worked years lobbying for this decision deserve our appreciation and thanks. I encourage all area residents to support this decision as we all will benefit.

I especially encourage our neighbours and municipal

leaders in Gladstone to support the new health centre in Neepawa. Many of us have considered Neepawa hospital as our hospital for decades, but not everyone has felt that way. It is time for everyone to move forward and accept the regional health centre concept by supporting the new Neepawa hospital as it will be Gladstone’s new hospital as well… regardless of RHA boundaries.

Letter: Food for thought

I’ve been reading the articles regarding COVID-19 and I’d like to add my two cents. When I was growing up I received my instruction in the Lutheran Church from the Luther’s Small Catechism.

The Fourth Commandment– The Authorities whom God has placed upon us– The Fourth Commandment says: “Thou shalt honor thy Father and thy Mother that it may be well with thee and thou mayest live long on the earth.”

What does this mean? We should fear and love God, that we may not despise our parents and masters, nor provoke them to anger, but give them honour, serve and obey them and hold them in love

and esteem. Who are parents and masters? Parents are father and mother; masters are all those by God’s ordinance that are placed over us in the home, in the state, at school and at the place where we work. And the scripture verse to tie this all together: “Whosoever therefore resisteth the power resisteth the Ordinance of God and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”

Romans 13:2 Rev. Borchardt and I have both been vaccinated and are planning to get the third dose. We are both concerned about those who have decided NOT to be vaccinated. What does this mean to your children or grandchildren? You can not

see them, you can not go out to eat and it means you sit at home and if you’re like I was feeling, you’re ready to crawl the walls. I’m a people person and love to visit the shut-ins or visit a dear person in the Care Home and because of COVID-19 we’re restricted from visiting, even though we’re vaccinated.

We’ve been living in Neepawa for 38 years, come January, and those of you who know me, know I have a strong faith. But I cannot even convince a Son of mine to get vaccinated and some of our own grandchildren will not be vaccinated. This breaks my heart, because I have always wanted the best for my family members, but when they reach a certain

age, it doesn’t matter what you say, they have the right to do what they want, even if it means disobeying God’s commandments.

I don’t write anything without Rev.’s approval, so we’re both asking you to please be vaccinated so we can get this pandemic to take a flying leap and get lost. So we have to wear a mask, do it, social distance and then return to worship and pray that God will also remove this thorn from our lives.

Another Bible verse I love is: “Return to the Lord your God, for HE is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast LOVE.” Jean Borchardt Neepawa

The problem with grain companies The recent decision by KAP to favour grain producer education over becoming involved in an attempt to re-write producer delivery contracts reflects the reality that all markets must have some form of regulation in place. A small and vocal group of western grain producers, while seeking freedom and less government, have a long and successful history of rejecting public regulation of the grain industry. The alternative to public regulation is the current system of corporate regulation. The calls for government to mandate an act of God clause in delivery contracts fails to recognize that such an intrusion by government would reduce grain company profits and would likely be seen as a violation of Canada’s trade agreements. Grain companies have struggled for more than a century to be freed from the burden of producer sponsored government regulation and co-operative grain marketing. Their efforts are being rewarded.

Grain companies seeking export sales are often dealing with state importing agencies. In a competitive market, importing agencies, private or public, will examine the sales proposal offered by a number of companies.

The product in play is exactly the same. The successful supplier will

be the company offering the lowest delivered price. Having achieved a sale, the grain company will invert the price of the sale minus its profit margin in the form of producers contracts that guarantee delivery to the end customer. This competitive system of marketing all but guarantees the producer will receive the lowest possible return from these markets.

On occasion the spot market has fallen below the contract price. In the circumstance there may be an opportunity for a grain company to increase its profit margin by partially filling its sales commitment from the spot market. In such an environment it is not unusual for producers to find that their grain has degraded while in storage and will only be accepted at a lower grade or at a latter date.

Past successes in removing public regulation and participation in the grain industry included the end of annual auditing of grain elevators, ending the mandatory annual public inspection of elevator weight scales, changing from standard grades to spec, the elimination of inward inspection at port, partial removal of protein bonus, a gradual pressure to remove the Canadian Grain Commission from its regulatory role. The replacement of public plant breeding

with private varieties and plant breeders rights, the shortening of field trials for new varieties, restrictions on a producer’s ability to retain seed, DE licensing varieties before the expiry of patent protection. Other contributors included legislated removal of the CWB and the loss of price pooling and the disappearance of the contingency fund preceded by the well or castrated loss of the Prairie Pools.

Our privately regulated grain contracting system is designed to work under ideal climate conditions with all risk involved born by the producer. 2021 was anything but ideal. The resulting loss to producers of the combined effects of depressed yields and under priced contracts is astronomical and involves the loss of producer created wealth that is now lost forever. KAP will continue to collect its membership fees with the cooperation of the grain companies, while educating producers to better understand and accept delivery contracts. I would contend that the real problem is not to be found within the wording of delivery contracts. The problem is with the grain companies imposed marketing system that the delivery contracts represent and enforce.

Letter: A building is nice, but what about people to fill it?

It is my opinion as a former registered nurse in the province that the new proposed hospital in Neepawa is going to stumble and fall in spectacular fashion unless staffing issues are addressed, and quick. This isn’t a new issue, it existed when I graduated in 1994.

Registered nursing programs went from a two plus year commitment to a four year degree. While this is appealing on the surface, as it promotes better educated nurses, it meant fewer people would want to, or be able to, enter the program.

The result was nurses who felt they were above floor nursing, a superiority complex that left daily care to LPNs and aids. And who can afford four years of university education without significant external financial support? And, no, student loans aren’t the answer.

The process of qualification is onerous, the amounts dispersed leave the individual living below the poverty level and repayment after graduation takes years, which cuts in to an already tepid wage.

The solution to this debacle was to train LPNs to pick up the slack.

Make their training program two years instead of one. Do you see a pattern here? Upon graduation, you are treated to years of working two or three jobs trying to pick up enough shifts to live on, working out of float pools that means your phone rings at 5:30 a.m. to call you in to fill a shift beginning at 7:30. How do you arrange child care with this

schedule? If you can’t work a shift that day, your name goes to the bottom of the list of calls and you may not see another shift offered for many days hence. Lesson learned. Units don’t want to hire fulltime or permanent. Typical with government employment that favours a malleable workforce that you can avoid paying sick leave, holidays and benefits to, you are kept on casual, part time and term positions for years. The government loves to announce that X number of new jobs have been created but of course this is the case if full time positions are being deleted in favour of part time and term positions, which employ more people at few hours for less money. Fooling no one.

If you haven’t bowed out of the profession by this time, you finally may get a permanent position.

Meanwhile, you are still pounding away at student loan repayment.

You work a combination of days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to be treated as subservient to older nurses and physicians, a miserable pecking order experienced only within the nursing profession.

I always felt that it would be a great idea to have facility-run daycare so you didn’t have to worry about where you were going to take your children for care on short notice, at hours not open with private and registered daycares. It would allow you to see your children on breaks, as working several days in a row

and often 12 hour shifts meant you didn’t have contact with your kids for extended periods. These daycares should be a standard in EVERY new health care facility, 24 hour child care.

I worked three different part time jobs for three years before I decided enough was enough and took specialty training to get work in the operating room.

More financial burden to take on. The takeaway was working part-time positions as you worked your way up the seniority list until you could secure a position with enough hours to actually live on.

General duty floor nursing took a toll on you physically and emotionally, because of working short staffed every day, feeling like you couldn’t provide the level of care you committed to provide in your training. I once broke silence to tell supervisory staff that we were working so short on that particular shift that we were operating at a level that compromised patient safety. Her response was that, if I ever uttered those words to her again, I would find myself out of a job.

There were never reviews of staff performance done to weed out incompetent nurses and you didn’t want to report such unsafe practice, as word would leak that you had done so and you would become a pariah among your peers.

If floor nursing was difficult, the operating room was a virtual viper pit. Senior nursing staff treated younger nurses brutally, no doubt,

because of their own level of mental distress and disillusionment in a career they were stuck in and had burnt them out long ago; one where you are under pressure every minute of every day to keep skills up-to-date via seminars, inservices and self education. You carry the well being, the lives, of patients on your back. You take it home, you feel a tremendous sense of responsibility and duty.

The reward for this commitment is a milieu where you have no support at the supervisory level. You are working at twice the pace that would ensure safe care, corners are cut, often at the expense of patient safety (and if anyone tells you this isn’t the case they are lying to cover their tracks). If you want specific examples of inappropriate nursing practice on a daily basis I would be happy to regale you with such anecdotes.

Incentivize entrance into nursing programs, provide opportunities for full time employment out of the gate, provide child care to ease the burden on working parents, compensate nurses who are working evenings, weekends and holidays proper compensation, not some insulting token that disappears once taxes are taken off paychecks. For those who are called in to work on short notice, float pool nurses or on call operating room staff called in in the middle of the night to do emergency surgery, also provide proper compensation. Increase the number of nurses trained,

starting now and ensure that they will be hired upon graduation.

There has to be actual support for working nurses at the supervisory and professional body level, not lip service publicly that in reality is nonexistent. Yearly professional reviews to weed out nurses who are incompetent or require feedback to improve their attitude, and if they are struggling, don’t ignore it. Give unit supervisors training on staff management, mental health recognition training and the encouragement to intervene where staff interaction issues are a problem. They shouldn’t be there only to fill out shift schedules and schmooze at the desk with physicians. They should be there to support and manage their colleagues.

If the government can commit “at least” $127 million dollars towards infrastructure for a new hospital, it will be money poorly spent if there isn’t a concomitant commitment to staffing issues that have existed within the profession for as long as I have been invested in the profession. That idealism and desire to help people smashed to pieces once the dismal reality of the profession is felt. It wears you down one shift at a time until you are surviving the hours spent there and you realize that the compassionate and rewarding career you envisioned doesn’t exist.

Food for thought and an expectation that nothing will change.

In reading Ken Waddell’s editorial of Dec. 10, (Are solutions being ignored?), I agree with his premises that “ Are solutions being ignored?” Yes, most definitely yes! Why? Because our Federal Liberal Party that is in control of the Nat iona l G over n ment releasing “Of So Called Truth” about COVID-19 seems to me, to be the script prepared by The Big Pharasuitical Industrial Complex of Drug.

Making Billion Dollar International Companies that need to believe that the population of Canada must be jabbed with their so called drug.

T hat requ i red t he re writing of the definition of vaccine In order to be call one! Yes, l am a little skeptical of the goals of big pharma, who needs to feed us a steady sup-

ply of their (not once in a life time) drug that will keep us from dying in a hopsital on a ventilator; in our underfunded medical system. So, why not, like Mr. Waddell suggested to Dr. Roussin, try a low cost alternative?

There are studies that indicate there are alternatives to vaccinating the entire population, but international drug companies do not get rich if we: 1) Get plenty of rest; 2) Eat heat hy food, preferably grown on your own acreage; 3) Spend quality time socializing with family and rural friends; 4) Get off the rat race and move out of Winnipeg to smaller towns; 5) Take you vitamins, especially Vitamin D; 6) De-stress. You do

not need a new big house, a new luxurious car or truckwhen older, smaller and cheaper alternatives...

Like what your grandparents choose would do fine!

So, in conclusion, why not try a cheap, alternative, non drug option?

It just might save your mental sanity and allow you to live a long, drug-

free life.

Time to face the facts, Ms. Buffi. People are dying in our midst because of this epidemic– volunteer in a COVID-19 ward and see how terrible it is to die from this. Ninety-nine to 100 per cent of people in ICU are not vaccinated and vitamin D and sunshine are not going to save them. People can research anywhere and if they like what they read, they can believe anything. It`s all about science and the ones in ICU are being treated with knowledge from science and medical expertise. If this was just the flu and you recovered it would be great, but people are being left with lifetime issues.

If you get sick, where will you go? Unvaccinated population simply don’t have the right to infect other people and the hospitals’ nurses and doctors are on the verge of collapse.

Obituary Wesley (Irwin) Steen

Wesley (Irwin) Steen passed away on Wednesday, April 21st, 2021 in the Carberry Plains Health Centre, his wife Linda at his bedside.

Irwin was born May 31st, 1927 to Milton & Eva Steen of the Stinson district. He was their fourth child, but the first male child to survive– two baby brothers having died in infancy. He attended Stinson School, leaving after Grade 8 to help out on the farm.

Farming became his lifetime occupation, and in early years, he sometimes worked briefly for neighbours. After a curling rink was built at Gregg, curling became winter’s entertainment for the men in the family. Though quiet in nature, Irwin enjoyed curling and was often the skip of the rink, in regular and/or at bonspiels. Many events were won/lost, prizes brought home and miles driven over the years.

On October 31st, 1959, Irwin and Linda McIntosh were married in the chapel of First Church United in Brandon. They lived in the Sear Block in Carberry – Linda continued employment with MTS and Irwin commuted to the farm. In July 1961, they moved to the farmstead in Stinson district, having purchased it from Mrs. Peggy Nelson. In March 1965, son Daryl was born, son Mervyn in 1967 and son Garth in 1969.

Irwin was a capable “Mr. Fix-It”, whether it was the house, sheds, machinery, etc. They had a new home moved to the farm in the late 1970s, and in the 1980s, a cabin was constructed in the yard and moved to Minnedosa Beach cottage area.

Mobility issues surfaced and, in 2010, Irwin & Linda moved into an apartment in Carberry– close enough to get to the farm easily. He enjoyed trips back to the farm– he was still able to watch the combining and make a trip to the pasture in the fall of 2020. These were his happiest memories.

Irwin was pre-deceased by his parents, sister Vivian and husband Allan Ruckle; brother Willis and wife Lois; sister Marion and husband Tom Wright, in-laws Herb and Mary McIntosh; Ian McIntosh; Yvonne and Hunter Witherspoon and Clifford Lesperance. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Linda; children Daryl (Chris), Mervyn (Dwayne) and Garth (Debra); grandchildren Jefferey, Mykel, Zachary and Tynille; brothers Byron (Betty) of Carberry, Bruce (Pat) of Winnipeg, brother-in-law Don (Muriel) McIntosh of Carberry, and sister-in-law Gwen Regambal of Brandon, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at Carberry Cemetery October 9th, 2021, with Rev. Emma Seamone officiating.

Due to Covid restrictions, a limited number were able to attend lunch at the church hall.

“Those we love are never really gone – they have a cherished place in our hearts where they will always be remembered for the kindness they showed, the love they shared and the happiness they brought”.

Ellis, Brenda Joyce (nee Bellingham) of Neepawa, MB. passed away peacefully with family by her side Nov. 29, 2021. Brenda was born Dec. 23, 1926 in Wanstead, Essex, England to Christopher & Winifred (nee Watts) Bellingham.

During the war, she met a young soldier, Edwin R. Ellis from Springhhill, Manitoba at a dance and they married Jan 1946 in Hove, England. She travelled to Canada June 1946 with many other war brides, finally arriving at Springhill.

Brenda was predeceased by her dad, Christopher and youngest sister, Sheila in June of 1945; her mother, Winifred in 1992; her husband, Ed Ellis in 1994. She is survived by sister Patricia Ward, of England and her family. Children- Vivian (Keith) Privat, Brian (CaryAnn) Ellis, Debbie (Ron) Stewart, and Stacey (Betty).

Grandchildren-Shelley (Curt) Allen, Ken (Ainsley) Privat, Mike (Jamie) Ellis, Steven (Allison L.) Privat, Scott (Susan) Ellis, Rob Henderson, and Neil (Katie) Privat. 10 great granddaughters, Alexis, Maddison, Charlotte, Cora & Sarah Privat; Kelsey, Kara & Karissa Ellis; and Taylor & Brooke Allen. Also, many nieces and nephews.

A family service led by Rita Friesen, a friend of Brenda’s, was held at the Neepawa Cemetery Dec. 4 with the 7 grandchildren as pallbearers. A luncheon followed at the Elks Manor.
