Neepawa church sanctuaries to be lit up Christmas eve

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press If you’re out and about on Christmas eve, you may notice the lights will be on in Neepawa churches.

No, they won’t be holding Christmas eve services against the current Code Red health orders. Leaving the lights on will be a symbolic message that the churches are still open, in a sense.

“Given that this is the first Christmas in living memory that we will not be worshipping in our sacred spaces, we thought it important to send a clear, visual message that Christmas still shines bright, and that the church is not shut or dormant, but alive and alight with the light of Christ,” explained Rev. Chad McCharles, of Neepawa United Anglican Shared Ministry, on behalf of the Neepawa Ministerial.

New book in the works for former Neepawa resident

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press A former local resident, who now lives in Winnipeg, is putting together a fourth book. Rick Sparling, who grew up in Neepawa, has written countless articles over the years in the Neepawa Press and the Banner & Press and now, he is compiling his newspaper articles into a book. It will feature stories about his childhood in Neepawa, a tour of local businesses from days past, local sports teams and more.

His other published works include a book on public school hockey, one on amateur hockey and one about local businesses, in conjunction with Cecil Pittman and Norma Forsman.

Sparling noted that this latest book has been something he’s been thinking about for a number of years.

“My son mentioned it to me while I was on the second book, but I put it in the back of my mind,” he said.

The timing of it now has a lot to do with the current situation in the world. “I love the research, etc. and I wanted to keep myself busy during the pandemic,” Sparling explained. He added that he’s been writing bi-weekly articles for the Winnipeg Free Press’s North Kildonan publication, The Herald, and he has literally run out of topics, so this book gives him something new on which to focus.

Sparling estimated the book will be less than 150 pages, once it’s all put together, with nearly 100 different articles, including ones he’s written himself and related columns and

letters written by others.

Three major series Sparling mentioned being in the book are “Humour defies aging”, “Where are they now?” and “Central School”.

“I’d love to have [the book] ready in the New Year,” he said of the estimated timeline. He’s just f inished the gathering stage, collecting all the articles from newspapers as far back as 2013. He’s now been speaking to a printer, figuring out how the book will be put together. His son has already designed a front cover for it.

Sparling said he plans to make sure the book is available locally, as it would be of most interest to Neepawa readers. “It’s stories that [locals] have probably read in the paper, but it’s going back over them and having them all together in a keepsake,” he explained. His original thought was to just get all of his articles into one book for his own keepsake, but later thought if there was any interest in it locally, he could sell it and turn the profits over to a worthwhile Neepawa cause.

“When all is said and done, the book isn’t worth much more than the cost,” Sparling expressed. He’s decided, therefore, to print 50 copies to sell, with the monies directed evenly between the Roxy Theatre in Neepawa and the Neepawa Access TV station (NACTV), so buying a book will help support those causes.

“Hopefully, this will be a sort of fundraiser for a couple of important Neepawa operations,” he stated.

Nutrition Bite Lifestyle Strategies to Help Stay on Track during the Holidays

Many of us can find it challenging to find the balance of following our usual eating plan while being faced with all the delicious traditional foods and desserts that are available during the holiday season. Now with COVID-19 thrown into the mix, can make it even more difficult.

2) Plan Ahead - choose your favourites or those that are not available all year round. Example: choose the stuffing over the mashed potatoes or bun.

3) Follow the 80/20 rule - 80% of the time choose nutritious options, 20% of the time allow yourself to consume “treat” foods if you desire while not feeling guilty.

4) Stay Connected - the holidays often mean spending time with family and friends, but this year we need to be creative. Having virtual dinner or “happy hour” parties, shipping/curbside gift drop offs, or simple phone calls keep us connected during these uneasy times.

5) Keep Moving - start by choosing an enjoyable activity involving those in your household if you wish, and getting some fresh air.

The spirit of Christmases past

Editor’s note: After two weeks away from my desk with surgery and a second bout in hospital with complications, I want to thank all the people who prayed for me. Thank you to son, Mike, for writing a column and wife, Christine, for doing the same. I hope and expect to make a full recovery, but won’t likely be back to full strength for some weeks yet.

I have never slept so much in my life before.

The care I received in three different hospitals was outstanding. fter spending nine grinding months facing death, despair, fear and frustration, it’s time for Manitoba to change the channel.

I, for one, think the province of Manitoba has done a good job of combatting COVID-19. The government has done a good job, but after all the grinding, it’s time to adopt some new approaches. That Dr. Roussin, his staff and the premier have not strangled someone is a miracle. We need to change the channel. The citizens of Manitoba need hope and a sense of fairness. Our leadership needs to offer hope and fairness and those commodities have been missing for a few months now.

1. The daily death announcements need to be modified. Either tell us if the deaths were “random” or due to underlying conditions or just give us totals. Knowing the age, what care home people lived in at the time of their death or where they lived doesn’t help much in our quest to understand what is actually happening.

2. We need to know how many people die each day of all causes. It’s morbid sounding, but are we actually losing many more people than other years? The health people must know these facts and if we are expected to take daily gut punches about C-19 deaths, we need to know context.

3. We need to tune out all the media when they simply regurgitate the death counts. Where are the stories about hope and about new treatments?

way too long, not actually applying their skills, resources and talents to finding stories about hope. It is a sad commentary on our news media, that with combined decades of experience and endless college degrees, that what we have been served up in terms of C-19 coverage by the media, for the most part, has been awful.

4. The majority of deaths by far have been in care homes and among our elderly who have underlying health issues. That does not make the deaths any less sad or hurtful, but it does now show a number of things. It would appear that perhaps if we had done a better job of sanitizing, protecting of residents and screening of staff and visitors over the years, we might have had less deaths from all diseases, such as influenza and pneumonia.

5. I am not sure who is to blame, but we still haven’t done enough to protect our vulnerable. Staffing levels should never be allowed to get stretched as badly as they appear to have been in the worst hit care homes. Hopefully, that lesson has been learned. The Long Term & Continuing Care Association of Manitoba says that care has been underfunded for 15 years in Manitoba.

In case anyone is keeping track, that covers several governments, both federally and provincially and four different political parties.

6. Given that the spread of C-19, when it has deadly effects, is mostly in care facilities, should we not move mountains to protect our elderly?

7. Given that C-19 spreads mostly

in large, unmasked gatherings, should we not adjust our approach on the economy and business? Wash our hands, socially distance unless we wear mask, stay out of large, unmasked crowds, stay at home when you are sick. We can do all that.

8. However, back to hope and fairness. The government needs to immediately open up all businesses at 25 per cent capacity. It makes no sense to think that C-19 isn’t being spread at Costco or Walmart, but it is being spread at the local hair dresser or clothing shop.

9. There is also an elephant in the room. While large gatherings are all illegal now, not everyone is obeying those rules. Some communities have repeatedly flaunted the provincial rules. One community has openly announced they plan to allow large Christmas and New Year’s gatherings.

Those kinds of decisions seem to be the wrong way to go.

10. C-19 is real, it’s not fake, people can be asymptomatic, mildly sick, severely sick or die from it. Let’s change the channel and fight this thing with logic, hope and fairness. If we don’t do that, we will still be taking a daily gut punch of death stats next Christmas and with no progress to show for it.

So with the age span, I Rita Friesen was prepared to have very differing memories, the youngest often growing up in a time when there was a more fiscally secure home. I asked because my own early years memories are few and often indistinct.

The shiny, twisted, metal icicles that our mother carefully hung from the tips of the tree branches, allowing them to dance slowly in the air movement of the home was the first memory of my older sister. And then a quick follow up text– and the cardboard crèche that we were allowed to play with.

My younger sister remembers the fragile glass ornaments; a strawberry and snowman, and then, “The cardboard crèche, ‘cause I could set it up and take it down at will!” That is a common memory, for I have a shadow of that one as well. And then, here too, a follow up text, the red glass beads garland with which mom carefully bedecked the tree. In our childhood, it was always a live tree and always set up in the beginning of December and dismantled in the beginning of January.

One of my fondest decorative memories are the lights in my paternal grandparents’ tree. The string of lights looked like little candles with a liquid gurgling within. So strong is the memory of their beauty that I, I who does not buy souvenirs when on a holiday, bought fragile glass ornaments in Moscow and , I may add, transported them safely home! One is a candle that is clipped on the end of a branch and another is a little red bird with white tail feathers that also gets fastened to the tip of a branch.

Also an echo of ones that graced my grandparents’ tree.

There is another Christmas decoration that is a strong memory. My older sister and my mother created stained glass windows from black construction paper and carefully saved bits of foil wrappers from candies and chocolate bars.

These treasure were gently ironed until smooth and gently glued into the opening cut in the arched window frame.

If my memory is correct– and it may be!– they cut the curved openings with a razor blade. This memory holds two prongs– as many memories do– one, their creations were beautiful treasure, and my crafty abilities lean more to hammers and chainsaws so something so delicate and fragile would not be my creation...

We could not speak of Christmas past without food being mentioned! One recalled the fruitcakes, yes, plural.

One would be the dark cake and the other lighter. The pans were the three size graduates, and in a really good year, there would a small one left for dad’s birthday in the end of February. Fruitcake was served for faspa and brought out whenever friends and family stopped by.

Hence, in great demand.

This year, Christmas will be different for many. It is an opportunity to reflect on the gifts of our memories and create more. Blessings and peace to all.

Christmas at the front I t is Dec. 25, 1914 and we are in a trench somewhere in France.

We have been here since the Great War began. We were told that the war might be over by now; but it isn’t and we have no idea when it will finally end or if we will make it home alive.

Since our arrival in France, every day has been the same. We are on full alert. We listen for the telltale sound indicating that a projectile fired by an enemy gun is headed our way. We take cover as soon as we hear it. The shell lands a few yards away. This time, no lives are lost. But the explosion creates another pothole and sends a shower of mud, water and filth into our trench, covering and drenching us all.

But on this day, Christmas Day, the guns are silent. Instead, we hear a sound we never thought we would hear in these trenches. Somewhere close by, soldiers are singing Christmas carols. German and Austrian soldiers sing their favourites in their lan-

Neil Strohschein guages. Soon, English and French soldiers join themand instead of gunfire, we hear what, for many, will be the most beautiful sound they will ever hear until after the war.

By the end of the day, we learn that all along the line, a Christmas cease fire has been declared. In some places, soldiers from each side have been able to retrieve the bodies of comrades killed in action and give them dignified burials. Elsewhere, soldiers have laid down their arms, removed battle gear and emerged from the trenches to wish each other a merry Christmas and exchange small gifts. We hear that at one location along the line, the two sides actually engaged in a soccer game.

re we ready for Christmas? How can we be ready?

No use doing all the baking if we cannot enjoy it together during this isolation time. Who is going to help us eat the turkey?

Why decorate the house?

Nobody will come and look how nicely the tree is decorated.

There must be other ways that we can delight in this most festive occasion of the year.

1914. It was a memorable day in an otherwise brutal war.

To this day, a Christmas truce memorial stands in the town of Frelinghein, France. One cannot gaze on that memorial without asking “What if...?” What if those who sent these soldiers to the front had learned from their example and, to use the words of a John Lennon song, “had given peace a chance?”

Might we not ask the same question today? How many disputes could we settle if opposing groups sat down and got to know each other? Could we benefit from hearing each other’s stories and feeling each other’s pain? Might we, by this simple act, learn what it will take to build bridges of trust between opposing

groups? And is it possible that we could finally agree to live in peace with each other and work together to build a better world for all people to enjoy? Yes– it is possible. It can happen.

We can hold different political views. We can feel differently about social and economic issues. We can even use different worship styles and believe in different gods. But we don’t have to get into fights or go to war just so one side can dominate and impose its beliefs on the other. That has never worked in the past and it won’t work now. There has to be another way– and there is.

We can allow God to fill us with his peace and then use every moment of every day to help create a world in which all people are accepted and we can all live in peace. And I know of no better time to do this than right now– as we celebrate the birth of “the Prince of Peace.” May the peace of Christ be with you this Christmas.

However, we need think deeper and ask ourselves if our heart is ready for Christmas. Jesus tells us in Luke 11:39-43 that we should not only be clean on the outside, but we need the Lord clean us on the inside, so that we can live and be a servant with a clean heart.

Let us get ready for Christmas.

Improvements needed on family violence residency permit Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in Canada and across the world. Forms of abuse are physical, sexual, psychological, financial abuse and neglect to provide basic human needs. Roughly 30 per cent of women experience domestic violence by their long-term partner.

Individuals holding a temporary permit in Canada who are fleeing domestic violence need a safety net in order to remain protected under the law. Hence why the Family Violence Temporary Residence Permit (FVTRP) was created.

The FVTRP program is relatively new, it’s still developing even up to this day. It lacks the structure and resources that other Canadian immigration programs have. This is why we decided to see for ourselves how hard it is to apply for this permit. When you visit the Government of Canada website, you are greeted with a lengthy page describing the program. Although it is informative, the page is nearly impossible for a nonnative English speaker to understand. The applicant is then prompted to fill out an application form. However, the link takes you to another website with more readings and the form is nowhere to be found. The page is impossible to navigate and the site does not offer resources to the reader, such as a domestic violence shelter or a food bank.

The program is still new. However, every day that a change is not made is a day a family remains trapped in an abusive situation or faces deportation. This program is not specifically mentioned within Canada’s 2019 budget regarding department funding. The government funds an immigration program within Canada, but does not disclose how much of this money (if any) is being invested into the FVTRP. If the government will allow for more funding to go into the FVTRP, then the program will be able to save many more lives. It can give those holding temporary visas the opportunity to remain in Canada. Those struggling with family violence are often in life or death situations, in which time is of the most importance.

Without any reforms, these families will continue to struggle.

The FVTRP program gives the victims of domestic violence a chance to escape from their abuser without having to leave the country. If the victim doesn’t sign up for the permit, they will lose their status of being in Canada and will be deported back to the country they hold citizenship in. The permit is valid for at least 180 days and it is a fee-exempt permit. During that time, the victims have to decide to either apply for a fee-exempt worker’s permit, a permanent resident permit, or to go back to the country they originated from. Although good in its intention, the program simply has not been developed the way it needs to be. A drastic reform needs to be made to this program so its accessibility can be improved.

Some might argue that there are countless other immigration routes for these families to take, and that reforms and a higher budget are not necessary for a program such as this. What some might fail to realize is this is the only program that specifically advertises on the government website that will push and accelerate the applications of those in abusive situations.

Although theoretically there are other programs these people could go through in order to remain in Canada, the wait time for these programs is often years and the process is lengthy. Someone facing family violence needs immediate help, and that is what (if reformed) this program will be able to do.

By Cpl. Jacob Stanton Neepawa Banner & Press Dec. 7– RCM P responded to a COV ID compliance complaint in Neepawa and found a person being non-compliant.

The individual was issued a ticket for failing to comply with a public emergency health order as a result.

Police also responded to reports of fraud and harassing communication in Neepawa.

Dec. 8– RCM P responded to a 911 hang up in Neepawa, which was determined to have been dialled accidentally by a child in the residence. Police received multiple reports of a suspicious person in the RM of Minto-Odanah, who after patrolling the area could not be located.

Police attended the scene of a vehicle vs. deer traffic collision and received a report of harassment in the RM of North Cypress-Langford.

Dec. 9– RCMP received a report of a person sleeping inside the rest stop in the RM of Minto-Odanah. Police attended and provided a ride to the individual.

Dec. 10– RCMP re-

sponded to a dangerous driving complaint in the RM of Minto-Odanah. The vehicle was stopped where it was discovered that the power steering was malfunctioning. The vehicle was towed as it was deemed unsafe to drive. Police assisted with a family disturbance in Minnedosa, conducted a wellbeing check in Gladstone and received a report of a hit and run to a vehicle in Minnedosa.

Dec. 11– RCMP were dispatched to a traffic complaint in the RM of MintoOdanah. Police located the suspect vehicle and found the driver to be impaired.

The driver was arrested and later released with a future court date. Police received a report of a stolen vehicle in Rapid City. The vehicle was later found by another police agency, it had been lit on fire. The matter is still under investigation.

Dec. 12– RCMP conducted various proactive traffic enforcement, engaging with several motorists.

Dec. 13– RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover in Minnedosa. There were no injuries

reported; tickets for driving without due care and open liquor were issued. Police assisted with a wellbeing check in Neepawa and conducted various traffic enforcement.

RCMP conducted 40 traff ic enforcement actions during this reporting period.

The Town of Neepawa has confirmed some details regarding Santa Claus’ present delivering activities for this year. Santa has spoken with Neepawa’s Town Council and various healthcare professionals to determine ta plan for best practices for his annual deliveries. It has been deemed that Santa’s deliveries are essential, and will move forward as scheduled from the eve of Dec. 24 into the early morning hours of Dec. 25.

Santa has been self-quarantining with Mrs. Claus, his reindeer and all the elves.

2021. As of 10:00 a.m. on Dec. 14, over 100 Manitobans have signed up for COTW through the Safe at Home initiative– just six days after the announcement. Ternier said that these participants range from families wanting to start the project themselves, to homeschooling families and teachers, to those who the Ternier family simply describes as “ just really curious adults.”

“My daughters and I feel truly fortunate that a little in-home project we created is now able to play a role in not only helping other people better understand the world, but in also giving Manitobans something to look forward to, when every notion about “something to look forward to” has been a real struggle this year,” Ternier enthused. “Focusing on building this program for others has honestly helped create something for us to look forward to as well.”

A welcome update has come quickly for a locally made initiative. Country of the Week (COTW), a program that allows participants to explore the countries of the world from the safety of their home, is now available to Manitobans for free for three months. This change comes just shortly after being featured in the Banner & Press’s Dec. 4 edition and an additional article in the Brandon Sun. Minnedosa’s Dave Ternier, who created the program with his daughters, shared how this change came to be.

“To my great surprise, I was contacted by the Province of Manitoba and invited to participate in the recently announced Safe at Home program,” said Ternier. “On Dec. 7, Country of the Week was announced as one of nine pre-approved grant recipients through the Safe at Home Manitoba program launched by the province.”

It is this grant which makes the three months of free access to COTW, and all its activities, possible.

To take advantage of this opportunity, Manitobans need to simply visit the COTW website via www. countryoftheweek.world/ manitoba and follow the instructions provided. The three month period will then begin for that participant once sign-up is completed.

“This ensures that everyone is given the full three months (90 days), regardless of when they sign up,” Ternier explained.

An Ontario man hunt has ended with the shooting of an alleged murderer, who now lies in a serious condition in a Toronto hospital.

Masked gunmen held up the Logan Avenue branch of the Bank of Montreal, Winnipeg, on Friday and escaped with approximately $10,000.

70 years ago, Thursday, December 14, 1950 Ottawa (CP)– Legislation ending the general rail strike last August topped the list of importance enactments at two busy sessions of Parliament in 1950. Other major pieces of legislation were passed, but none surpassed the strike ending measure in importance. It ordered 124,000 railway workers back to their jobs within 48 hours and ended a nine-day strike which had affected every community in a country largely dependent on rail transportation.

Natchez, Miss. (AP)– A frail, 14-year-old girl had a simple explanation of a two-hour shooting spree in which she terrorized the community of Stanton, Miss.

“It must have been the devil in me,” said she of Monday’s rampage in which she wounded her uncle and fired shots at her step-father, mother, grandmother and two policemen.

60 years ago, Friday, December 16, 1960 Neepawa Fire Depar t ment prompt ly answered a call to a truck fire at McDougall’s Garage about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire was in the motor of the truck and the vehicle was quickly moved out of the service department door and the job of extinguishing the fire completed.

The damage to the truck was about $75 and to the building $50, Mr. McDougall informed The Press.

A Santa stopover in Minnedosa This too shall pass

Despite being busy with lots of last minute preparations, Santa Claus has decided to make a quick pre-Christmas visit to Minnedosa. Jolly old St. Nick has been in contact with the Minnedosa Lions Club and has arranged to be in town on Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Before everyone gets too excited about getting their gifts early, Santa will not be delivering the presents at that time, so you’ll still have to wait for Christmas morning on that.

Instead, Santa will be going up and down the streets of Minnedosa playing a few of our favourite Christmas carols and spreading a little holiday cheer. Since the reindeer are in for a busy night on Dec. 24, they will be back in the stables at the North Pole and Santa will be getting a ride from some of the local first responders from the community.

Due to the current provincial regulations, related to COVID-19, Santa will also be adhering to all the local guidelines, because that is what good boys and girls do. He wants everyone to stay safe and follow health orders and hopes that you’ll enjoy watching and waving from your doorsteps or front yards.

Santa will be arriving in Minnedosa on Dec. 23 at around 7:00 pm, at the police station. A look at his travel route from there can be found online at discoverminnedosa.com.

that Santa decided to visit because of the well-known generosity of the community. So as part of the visit, he and the Lions Club are requesting a little bit of support for the local food bank. People are asked to place a non-perishable food item at their curb-side for volunteers to pick up during the drive-by. Those items will go towards ensuring that everyone has a good Christmas.

voice, and holler out JUST SHOP LOCAL. These holidays will be different, but still can be sweet, So be thankful and kind, and keep your distance six feet.

Unprecedented times they say, but what do you mean, Don’t you remember, this happened back in 1918.

This Covid pandemic has indeed cast a pall, Over life and how we live it, it impacts us all.

No concerts, no markets, no festivals to attend, Just think of the party, when it comes to an end.

It’s sad for our teams, we’re unable to cheer, although our Bombers, will be champs for two years.

But soon with the promise of a Covid vaccine, We can then go watch a movie, on the big screen.

Many thanks to the workers, who are on the front lines, Your efforts in this struggle, are a ray of sunshine.

The service included several solos, duets and quartets, which were well-received by comments from Austin, Brookdale, Carberry and Neepawa.

•Minnedosa United Church also held a virtual service, led by Rev. Kathy Platt, which included communion and several musical solos, duets and trios from pianist Alexis Harvey and vocalists Darlene Kokke, Barry McNabb and Jim Comrie. Westman Cable television carried the service Dec. 6.

• Glad to see Rev. Erik Parker, of Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, East Kildonan and 20 other ministers stand up to Pastor Leon Fontaine, of Springs Church, calling on him to repent for his actions of holding drive-in church services in contravention of public health orders.

His court challenge was denied. “Any donations for its defense fund should be donated to Harvest Manitoba.” Their letter was also intended for the Church of God Restoration, near Steinbach.

• Carberry’s Derek Samagalski and his 2020 mixed doubles curling partner, Krysten Karwacki, of Winnipeg, are provincial champions who were unable to compete at the Nationals in Portage due to COVID-19. Second for Mike McEwen’s rink, Samagalski got a call from third, Reid Carruthers, say-

ing his sister-in-law needed a curling partner. The rest is history. In the provincials, at the Brandon Curling Club, they battled through 10 games and won the final 8-2 over Steve Irwin and Stacey Fordyce. They still may get a chance at the Nationals slated for Calgary in March. However, Curl Manitoba has scheduled a 2021 Provincials at St. Vital Curling Club in February.

Currently, curling and hockey are in a lockdown.

• This week, Bill Saunders, from Fredericton, New Brunswick, who is writing a book on provincial baseball at national tournaments, phoned for information.

Western Manitoba hosted four senior nationals, centered out of Brandon (1970, 1977, 2006 and 2008).

Although Baseball New Brunswick was opposed to having the Moncton Mets travel by bus from Brandon to Neepawa, Bill Saunders and my late friend, Rod Wilson, NB manager, claimed that trip was a tournament highlight. It was a beautiful summer night and the trip showed the Maritimers some prairie landscapes, an immaculate diamond and a wonderful beef barbecue. Moncton beat the host team 4-2 and later, went home with the gold medal. Perry Bergson, Brandon Sun baseball writer, sent Saunders 10 pages of coverage of the tournaments. When Manitoba hosts senior tournaments, they always field two teams.

Barry Wowk (Angusville), tournament chairman and MSBL 14 year president, presented a complete set of catcher’s equipment to Moncton all-star catcher, Mike Ivey.

Carberry community profile: Zara Dickson

Zara Dickson (17) is a very sports-oriented honour student in the 2021 Carberry graduating class. While Zara enjoys fastball, hockey, volleyball, badminton and basketball, her favourite is baseball.

At the invitation of Patti Hacault, a sports enthusiast and reporter form Holland, Zara went to a Baseball Manitoba female team tryout. She spent two years with the U14 squad and another three seasons with the U16 team (one year as an overage player). She plans to try out for the U21 team this season.

Blessed with two excellent and dedicated coaches, Rod Ledochowski, of Teulon, and Blaine Fortin, from Lundar, Dickson really enjoyed two national tournaments (2018 and 2019) at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Both Ledochowski and Fortin are Manitoba Baseball Hall of Famers and Hacault was the

team manager. “All three had a profound influence on me,” Zara said. “The Maritimes were beautiful and life by the Atlantic Ocean was a breath of fresh air. The people were really friendly and the seafood was good. We were billeted at St. Vincent University.”

Her baseball positions were second base and left field.

During the winter months, the girls’ baseball practices were held in the Southport gym at Portage la Prairie from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Sundays.

The 2020 Nationals scheduled for Prince Edward Island were cancelled due to COVID-19.

Zara also played for the Carberry Collegiate Cougars and in the Carberry Minor ball program since she was 10 years old.

Catcher, third base and shortstop were her positions in softball.

In the school music program, she started with the flute in Grade 7 and later moved to the oboe.

Future plans for Zara would be continuing her education and sports. She would like to focus on Kinesiology and proceed to a medical field helping people, possibly physiotherapy.

Classifieds Obituary Dwayne Richard Crandell Dwayne passed away suddenly at his home in Kelwood, Manitoba, November 24, 2020 at the age of 45.

Dwayne was born in Neepawa, January 5, 1975.

He lived in Kelwood and went to school there and high school in Neepawa. He played broomball as a young person, Dwayne was very busy with the Kelwood Fire Department and worked many years for the Town of Neepawa, where he had many friends.

Dwayne was predeceased by his mother, Lona, in 2020 and his dad, Richard, in 2001.

He will be remembered by the Jasper family, many friends and co-workers. If you wish to donate, it may be sent to the Kelwood Fire Department.

Steph was very civic-minded, demonstrating leadership qualities in all aspects of her community service, as well as in all of the public offices she held. She was a pioneer, a leader and a role model for females engaging in more non-traditional roles. She became the first female councilor of the town of Gladstone in 1960, served as the first female mayor of Gladstone, represented Gladstone on the Board of the Neepawa Health Unit, formed the first Parks Board for Gladstone, was a founding member of the Gladco Committee to initiate town planning and was a trustee of Pine Creek School Division during its amalgamation. She was the catalyst for improving and beautifying Williams Park in Gladstone and took great pride in the results. She chaired the Gladstone Centennial Committee that was in charge of landscaping Williams Park for the celebrations. She also served in various capacities on additional Gladstone History Book Committee, IODE, The Order of the Royal Purple and Crescent Lodge Seniors Residence Board.

In 2006, Steph was awarded the Gladstone Citizen of the Year in recognition of her tremendous contributions to the community. She believed that her community gave to her and therefore her volunteer services were a thank-you to her community. Her endless years of dedication and commitment have improved the quality of life for past and present citizens of Gladstone and surrounding communities.

She has contributed her time and talents to both young and old, with the last number of years spent working with the elderly.

Steph’s life was very rich and rewarding; living each day to the fullest. Her interests were varied and included gardening, travel, cooking, baking, canning, knitting, needlepoint, and crocheting, to name a few. Those who were lucky enough to be a recipient of her prize pickles, mocha torte cakes, cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers and delicious pies will always remember these tasty delicacies. Her turkey dinners were exceptional and she always found time to cook a goose for

March 6, 1924 – December 8, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that the the grandchildren because they enjoyed these meals so family announces the passing of much. Her baking earned her countless prizes at the local Stephanie Anne Karaz at Third fairs, as well as many compliments and accolades.

Crossing Manor, Gladstone on Steph walked in faith and reflected the light of God in her December 8, 2020 at the age thoughtful and caring ways. She spoke to the Lord in prayer of 96 years. every day of her life; which was very important to her. She

Steph married Anthony George Karaz on August 30, 1947 and they resided on a farm at Tenby, where they raised a family of two – Terry and Valerie. They moved to Gladstone in the fall of 1954, where they built their present home; in which Steph took such pride and which gave her so much joy. She remained in her beloved home independently until she was 95 years of age. In 1958, Steph and Tony became involved in the family bee business, with her being an integral part, from uncapping the honey frames to managing the financials.

Stephanie Anne Karaz (Sladek)

Stephanie was the first-born child of Gaspar and Ilona Sladek in Baglasaya, Hungary.

The family immigrated to Canada in 1926, when Steph was 2 years old, and settled in the Pine Creek District. As no one in the family spoke English, Steph was sent to the Norfolk School in Pine Creek at an early age to master the language. In 1942, the family moved to Gladstone where she completed her high school. She then moved to Winnipeg to complete a business course, followed by work in the legal and banking fields, as well as in the family apiary.

was actively involved in the church, from being Hospitality Minister at mass to participating in the many Altar Society activities to support the church, as well as other charitable causes. She provided countless baked items for bake sales and always made sure that the priests were well-fed. She also identified people in the community who lived alone and provided baking and meals to lift their spirits. She conducted spiritual services for residents at Third Crossing Manor, as well as a cooking and baking program for over 20 years.

She was actually older than many of the residents of the care home whom she was inspiring.

She had knit hundreds of toques, mitts and scarves for school children and for the Salvation Army. Her grandchildren fondly recall teasing her about the Woolie Wizards knitting group she belonged to, but they sure treasured the beautiful sweaters she made for them. These were a work of art. It was her kind and caring nature that reached out to others in need, and her reward was seeing the pleasure she brought to others.

Steph valued family, cherishing time spent with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Granny” was happy to provide advice to them on any issue. She also enjoyed having her siblings and many other relatives spend the holidays at her home. She continued weekly contact with her siblings and kept in touch with her many life-long friends.

She continues to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Predeceased by her parents Gaspar & Ilona; husband Tony; brothers George and Gazel; sisters Mary and Jennifer; in-laws Joseph & Elizabeth; sisters-in-law Margaret and Elizabeth; brothers-in-law Jack, Andy, Julius, Les, Joe, and Raymond; nephew Sherman. Steph will be lovingly missed by her son Terry (Barb); daughter Val (George); grandchildren Tiffany (Donald), Courtney, Garett (Adriana) and Tara; great grandchildren Brooke, Ellie and Liam; sisters Julie and Elizabeth; sisters-in-law Maudie, Helen and Arlene; brother-in-law Steven and many nieces and nephews.

We thank God for the many years of sharing Steph with us.

Her deeply entrenched values that she passed on to us are a part of her amazing legacy.

The family of Steph would like to extend their appreciation for the care and support given to her by the special people at the Gladstone Hospital, the Neepawa Hospital, The Home Care Support Program and Third Crossing Manor. We would also like to thank Rebecca Krause, nurse practitioner, and Dr. Ong for his medical care throughout the years. We especially thank Father Mark Filips for his spiritual support and guidance. Also, thank you to her friends who were always there for her. Each and every one of you were very special to her!

A Private Family Service was held with Interment at the Gladstone Cemetery.

Obituary Marge Francis

With very sad hearts, we are sharing with family and friends Mom’s passing on Thursday, December 3rd, 2020, at the Rivers Hospital.

Marge was born on July 28, 1938, in Lorlie, Saskatchewan.

She moved with her parents and sister Rene to the Gladstone area, when she was just three weeks old. She lived in the Gladstone and Arden areas up until her marriage to Bruce, when they bought their first house in the Town of Arden.

On July 28, 1956, Marge married the love of her life, Bruce Francis. They were blessed with five children - Robin, Kerry, Grant, Shauna, Dwayne. They eventually moved from the house in Arden to the Francis family farm. They lived on the farm until 2012, when they moved into Neepawa.

Marge was a community person. For many years she supported all the events that took place at the Arden Hall, Curling Rink and Park. She was also involved with the United Church, a member of the UCW. Marge worked alongside Bruce on the Lansdowne Centennial Committee in 1984, and then the Three School Reunion in Arden in 2006. She loved to get people together.

Mom was very proud of the Arden Community. She kept her ties to the town and surrounding area, even after moving to Neepawa. She attended and supported the various shows and concerts put on at the Arden Hall. These were always a highlight in her calendar. She also enjoyed her time volunteering at the Arden Museum.

After many years of working on the farm, in 1984, Mom decided to work outside the home and began doing Home Care in Neepawa and Area. She did this for 17 years and developed many good friendships with her co-workers and clients. Mom was also very proud of her years working as a telephone operator for MTS from 1955-1965.

Marge loved her family. She had a very special relationship with each of her children and grandchildren. She instilled in each of them her quiet but strong values, practicality, compassion, understanding, love and support. She was interested in everything her children and grandchildren did – followed their sports, their travels, their hobbies. She was an amazing Mom and Grandma.

Marge is survived by her four children - son Robin, wife Sherry, granddaughters Brittany and Lyndin; son Kerry, wife Theresa, granddaughter Teighan, grandson Graham;

daughter Shauna, husband Mike, grandsons Jesse and Drew, granddaughter Logan; and son Dwayne, wife Kim, grandsons Mackenzie, Mayson, Nicklaus. She is also survived by the Benson Family, and Bruce’s sister Lorraine and family. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce in 2019 and their son Grant in 1989.

Mom loved to work outdoors. Her gardens at the farm were her pride and joy. Countless hours were put into making her flower beds perfect. Roses were her favourites and they were second to none! Her passion for gardening continued when they moved to Neepawa. Mom had flowers wherever she could find a spot and she continued to enjoy fresh vegetables from a small garden that she maintained. To sit outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air was a daily joy for Mom. Sitting by a fire with family was also a special time.

Indoors, Mom was a fantastic cook. Everyone loved whatever she would make. Butter tarts, nanaimo squares, fresh bread and homemade jam will forever be long time favourites for all of us.

Doing crossword puzzles and playing cards were favourite pastimes for Mom. She looked forward to her daily paper so she could do the puzzle. Mom loved to play cards. There was nothing like a good game of Shanghai rummy with the family or sitting around visiting and playing cards with friends.

Collecting coins was also a great interest of Mom’s. She loved collecting money and was up to date with every new Canadian coin that was put into circulation. Everyone liked to bring Grandma back money from their travels so she could add it to her collection.

Mom and Dad enjoyed camping and travelling and went from coast to coast in Canada, north to Alaska, south to Mexico. They covered it all, making friends everywhere they went.

Mom was always up for an adventure. She never turned down the opportunity to jump in a vehicle and go for a ride.

Mom loved and was loved by many. Her Arden neighbours were very special to her, and when she moved to Neepawa, she developed many more good friendships. She was very grateful for all their support over the past couple of years.

COVID-19 updates Provincial government launches its COVID-19 immunization campaign: Manitoba’s first COVID-19 immunization clinic began operation on Wednesday, Dec. 16. The clinic is located at the University of Manitoba’s campus adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. This site was chosen because it has the capacity to safely store the Pfizer vaccine, which must be kept at ultra-low temperatures and could not be moved after it was delivered.

Nearly 900 appointments have been booked to immunize Manitoba’s first priority group of specific at-risk health-care workers. Each immunization appointment is expected to take about 45 minutes.

Enforcement fines (Dec. 7 to 14): Fewer individuals and businesses across Manitoba have been fined this past week for not following the provincial government’s COVID-19 enforcement rules. In total, just 48 tickets were issued between Dec. 7 and Dec. 13. The previous week, 85 tickets were handed out.

•The 48 new tickets include seven $5,000 fines for businesses and 36 $1,296 tickets for individuals. There were also five failure to wear a mask fines, levied at $298 each. A total of $82,146 in fines were issued last week.

Since enforcement efforts began in April, 498 tickets have been issued, resulting in more than $765,000 in fines to businesses and individuals.

PMH 7-day COVID-19 average: Over the course of a recent seven day period from Thursday, Dec. 10 to Wednesday, Dec. 16, there have been 187 new COVID-19 cases reported within the Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) region. Last week, there were 152 new cases reported over the course of seven days.

•The total cases in the Prairie Mountain are 1,390 with 1,040 of those recovered, 323 currently active and 27 deaths. Brandon has the most active cases as of Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 175.

Whitemud, meanwhile, which encompasses Neepawa, has an active count of one. Last week, it had three active cases.

•The Winnipeg region currently has the most active COVID-19 cases, with 4,049, while the Northern Health Region has the second most active cases, at 708. Interlake’s active cases are third highest, at 380, while Southern Health is fourth, with 337. Prairie Mountain’s 323 active cases are currently the fewest of the five provincial RHAs.

I encourage you to spread your generosity amongst those of less fortune; especially when so many people are experiencing new financial and personal challenges.

I also encourage you to support our small and local businesses this holiday season. These businesses are the bedrock of our com-

We were so fortunate to enjoy a summer of great weather and outdoor activities with small groups of people and an extended fall of mild weather. The ag producers were able to seed and harvest with little disruption this year, which was a relief from past years in our area.

Message from Bob Adriaansen, Reeve, North Cypress-Langford The Municipality of North Cypress-Langford (NCL) has been reflecting on the year 2020 as it comes to an end.

To say that 2020 was a different year would be an understatement, as the world has been battling the Coronavirus pandemic since January. Nothing has been the same, even in our corner of Canada, as we all had to go about our lives differently in COVID-19.

It is wonderful to see our residents supporting each other through this scary and uncertain time. I would like to thank the staff for adapting to changing situations to keep our citizens safe and informed. I would also like to thank our citizens for their patience as we navigate these strange times.

As we come close to Chr istmas, our public health officials are telling us to stay home to keep safe.

“We isolate now, so we can gather again when no one

is missing.” New vaccines are currently being distributed for immunization and we will see the vaccine in our area in the coming months. Please continue to exercise safe infection control practices to keep our viral rates low.

Mother Nature brought some crazy weather this way in early summer, causing overland flooding, road and bridge washouts.

Over the course of the summer, we rebuilt roads and crossings, projects which amounted to costs of over $500,000. The provincial government has advanced funding to help offset some of these costs, which is very much appreciated. I would like to thank our office staff and public works department for working hard to accomplish the repairs. I would also like to thank our residents for their patience as we worked to manage the aftermath of the event, and all the necessary steps to replace water crossings.

As part of our regular road maintenance, several machinery roads were upgraded, making daily farming transportation safer and more efficient.

It is council’s mandate to maintain an excellent road system.

The Carberry NCL fire hall expansion was completed and our area now has a first-rate facility. It is one more tool available to our outstanding fire crew to aid in keeping our residents safe when disaster strikes.

I would like to wish all our staff a safe and happy holiday and New Year.

Thank you very much for your hard work during this trying year.

Overall, I am grateful for the successes that have been achieved and the abundance of blessings we have received.

I look to 2021 with hope in my heart and optimism for the expedient recovery of our people and our economy. We are a strong and resilient people. We have endured hardships before and risen to the challenges of staying focused and getting back on track. We will do that again.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Manitoba’s health care providers, protection services, educators/staff/administration of our school systems and the thousands of retirees and volunteers that have all gone above and beyond during a historic pandemic to ensure our families received care and services as required.

On behalf of Jodie, myself and my family, we want to thank you for your support and understanding during a very difficult year.

It will be like no other, but in the quiet of your own home, say a prayer for those who are not able to enjoy any kind of happiness at all because of circumstances in their lives they can’t control.

This year will be a very different holiday season with COVID-19. To help keep the kids away from the electronics, get them busy in the kitchen and create some new traditions and memories. It takes a bit of extra time and patience, but after all, it’s about giving and sharing and who can resist a tray of goodies? This is an easy, colourful and fun recipe for the kids to make and eat. If your kids are not walnut fans, you can use finely chopped peanuts instead. Enjoy!

1/3 cup oil 1 tsp. cinnamon 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1 egg 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 1 tsp vanilla 2 -3 cups mini marshmallows 1 medium banana, mashed 1 cup semisweet sweet chocolate chips 1 1/4 cup flour 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, cut into 2-3 pieces 1 tsp. baking powder

To a bowl, add the oil, sugar, egg and vanilla and mix. Stir in the banana. To the flour add the baking powder, cinnamon, salt and walnuts. Spread in a greased 9 x 13” baking pan. Bake at 350°F oven for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with the marshmallows, chips and cherries. Put back in the oven for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned. Cool completely before cutting into squares. (You can eat it warm but it is more difficult to cut into squares)

This simple salad will get rave reviews from your family. The dried cranberries add a festive touch and the apples gives it a nice crunch. Should you choose to add the candied ginger, this salad will have a zippy, sweet flavour.

3 medium apples 3 cups diced cauliflower 2 Tbsp. diced onion 1 large rib celery, thinly sliced 1/2 red pepper, diced 1 small carrot, peeled and sliced thinly 1/3 cup dried cranberries 1/3 cup sunflower or pumpkin seeds 2 Tbsp. finely chopped candied ginger-optional

Dressing: 2/3 cup mayonnaise 1 Tbsp. sugar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice scant tsp. celery seed 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper or more to taste

Wash and dice the apples, leaving the peels on. Combine with the other salad ingredients. In a small bowl, combine the dressing ingredients and then pour over the apple mixture and toss to coat. Refrigerate until serving.

If your mincemeat repertoire is limited to tarts try this fun way to serve mincemeat.

Your house will smell wonderful as they bake and your family will enjoy this new breakfast addition. I used my homemade green tomato mincemeat and they were delicious.

2 cups flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt

3/4 cup milk 1/3 cup oil 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 1/2 cup mincemeat 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts 1 large egg, beaten

Drizzle if desired: 1/4 cup icing sugar 1 tsp. milk or more, as needed 1 tsp. brandy or vanilla flavour Preheat oven to 375°F and line 18 muffin tins with paper liners.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and nuts of choice. In a smaller bowl stir together the egg, milk, oil and lemon juice, and then add in the mincemeat. Pour the liquid into the flour. Stir until the batter is just combined. Fill the muffin cups 3/4 full and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown and toothpick inserted comes out clean. If desired, drizzle with icing sugar mix while warm.

Syrup: 1/4 cup butter 1 cup pancake syrup 1 tsp. cinnamon Syrup: In a small pot, add the syrup ingredients and bring to a gentle simmer. Keep warm until pancakes are ready. Pancakes: In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices. In another bowl, mix the pumpkin, eggs, oil and milk. Stir in the flour mixture until just moistened. Add the candied ginger. If the batter is too thick, add a wee bit more milk. Pour by large spoonfuls onto greased hot griddle. Turn when bubbles form on top and cook the second side until golden brown. Serve with the cinnamon syrup.

It would not be Christmas without sweets and pies. This recipe is truly a delicious dessert. It will win compliments at your special meal and perhaps become a new Christmas tradition. This recipe is for a 9 inch purchased pie crust.

3 large apples 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 1 tsp. apple pie spice or 3/4 tsp. cinnamon and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 Tbsp. frozen orange juice concentrate 1 tsp. grated orange zest Topping: 1/3 cup flour 1/3 cup oatmeal 1/3 brown sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts if desired Set raisins to plump up in hot water. Slice and peel apples. In a large bowl, add the apples, cranberries and raisins (discard the water). Mix the sugar, cornstarch, spice, orange concentrate and zest in a small bowl and gently stir into the apple mix. Place in the pie shell. For the topping ingredients, add the flour, oatmeal and sugar together. Cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. If using nuts, add them now. Sprinkle over the filling. Bake at 350°F for 50-60 minutes until the top is golden and the filling is bubbly. Enjoy warm or cold.

A Pina Colada is a delicious tropical drink made with pineapple juice and coconut milk, with a splash of rum. Modelled after this drink, these cookies add a special touch to a cookie tray and a holiday hit for Santa’s midnight snack.

Mix the baking powder and salt into the flour. Add to the creamed mixture. Stir in coconut, and if desired, cherries. Drop by tablespoons on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for around 10 minutes or until set in the middle. Cool on a wire rack. Mix the lime juice with the icing sugar. If it needs more liquid to make it drizzly, add a wee bit of milk. Drizzle over the cookies and then sprinkle with the coconut.

From earliest times, cinnamon has been treasured as a truly magnificent spice. This delicately fragrant spice comes from the bark of the evergreen tree. Native to Sri Lanka, it was highly prized among ancient nations. Cinnamon was a popular gift to give to monarchs or in other words, fit for a king! I love the aroma in my home when baking with cinnamon.

2 cups sugar 3/4 cup corn syrup 1/4 cup water 3 Tbsp. butter 3 cups salted peanuts 2-3 tsp. cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 Tbsp. vanilla

In a heavy bottomed Dutch oven add the sugar, corn syrup and water. Over medium heat, bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Using a candy thermometer, cook until it reaches 240°F. Add the butter and peanuts and continue cooking, stirring frequently and cook until thermometer reaches 300°F. Remove from heat and quickly stir in cinnamon, baking soda and vanilla. Pour immediately into the buttered pan, and tilt the pan so that the brittle covers the entire pan corner to corner. Let cool until firm, then break into small pieces. Store in an air tight container. Hide the container so there will be peanut brittle for Christmas!

Whether a one word toast or longer, a toast is usually an expression of honour or goodwill. The term toast began back in the 17th century when toasted bread and spices were added to wine for flavour. By 18th century England it was considered rude to drink without wishing someone good health. Your right hand raised straight out with your glass was meant to show you carried no concealed weapons.

The clinking of the glasses together was to replicate the sound of church bells ringing. Supposedly, the devil was repelled by the sound of church bells. People in different countries may enjoy drinking different drinks, but raising glasses and giving a toast in celebration is something shared around the world.

“Na zdoróvʹje” say the Russians, in France it is “Santé” and in an Italian establishment “Salute”. For Gaelic Scotland and Ireland the toast is “Slàinte maith” and in the Ukraine your glass is raised to “Na zdorovlya”. All these toasts mean “to your health” and that is true for most countries. This year, that toast is so much more meaningful.

I will leave you with this toast for your Christmas celebration: May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope, the spirit of Christmas which is peace, the heart of Christmas which is love.

For your Christmas toast, try this fragrant mulled wine recipe, incredibly easy to make in the slow cooker.

1 bottle of red wine, not too sweet, but fruity, like a Merlot or Zinfandel 3 cups of apple juice 1/2 cup of honey 1 orange cut into thin slices 2 whole cinnamon sticks 2 tsp. ginger, cut into 8-10 small pieces or 1-2 tsp. ground ginger 8-10 whole cloves orange slices for garnish In a 6 quart slow cooker, combine wine, apple juice, honey, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, ginger and cloves.

Cook on low for 2-3 hours. Switch slow cooker to keep warm and serve.

In the Philippines, Leche Flan is a popular dessert during celebrations, and the dining table won’t be complete without it. Traditionally, a llanera - an oval shaped aluminum pan - is used for this recipe; however any shape of cake pan, round or square can be used. This recipe would fill a 9” round cake pan or use several smaller pans. Although it sounds fussy, the simplicity of the ingredients and the short prep time made it easy to prepare. Leche flan is delicate and heavenly, and hugged by caramel; a perfect way to end your holiday meal.

In a saucepan, mix the sugar and water.

Bring to a boil for a few minutes until the sugar caramelizes-about 5-6 minutes. It needs to be golden colour.

Very lightly grease pan. Immediately pour and spread the caramelized sugar into pan and set aside. Mix well the egg yolks, evaporated milk, condensed milk and vanilla by hand or blender. Gently pour the mixture on top of the caramel in the pan. Fill the pan to about 2 inches thick. Cover the pan with aluminum foil. In a preheated oven of 325°F, place a large deep baking pan (larger than the leche pan). Add enough hot water to fill up the large baking pan halfway full. Place the foil covered pan with the custard and caramel in the centre of the larger baking pan. This is called a water bath ‘bano maria’ way of cooking. Bake for 45-55 minutes. If using several smaller pans less time is needed. Test the custard to see if it is done by inserting a thin knife. If the knife comes out clean, it’s done. Cool and refrigerate before serving.

To serve, run a thin knife around the edges to loosen the sides; place a platter on top of the pan and quickly turn upside down to position the golden brown caramel on top.

For a different flavour instead of the vanilla extract use lime/lemon zest.

Normally, the holiday time is a busy time, with visiting extended family, attending concerts, church services and entertaining friends and neighbours. This year, our lives have changed and we will have an absence of these activities. To keep the kids busy, help them make “Jar cookies” as gifts for their friends or family. As they make their gifts, ask them to share the ways in which they treasure the person they are making the gift for. Get the kids to make cards with the mixing information on them to attach to the jar. Go and giggle with them as you deposit the gifts on the doorsteps of the recipients and share the joy of spreading Christmas cheer.

In a bowl, cream the margarine, eggs, water and vanilla.

Add the jar of cookie mix and stir until it is well mixed.

Drop on a greased cookie sheet by tablespoons. Bake in a preheated 177°C (350°F) oven for 9-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet and let cool on a wire rack. Enjoy!
