New possible exposure to COVID-19 has happened at Gladstone Elementary School. On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Manitoba government released a statement indicating that the exposure happened between Sept.

8 and 10, and once more on Sept. 14, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The Town of Gladstone is located in the Southern Health Region. In a letter sent to parents, Southern Health stated the person in question was asymptomatic.

“Be assured that public health investigations to identify individuals who may have been exposed begin within 24 hours of a confirmed laboratory test. Anyone identif ied as a close contact will be contacted and provided instructions for self-isolation.

Testing may also be recommended,” the letter said.

As of Sept. 23, summer colours were bravely holding on. It won’t be long before the bright flowers fade and the bicycles will have to be stored away.

Parrott vying for AMM vice presidency Neepawa town councilor Murray Parrott has been conf irmed as one of five candidates for the Association of Manitobas Municipalities (A M M ) vice presidential post. The AMM election process was discussed near the conclusion of the council meeting.

Parrott stated that he was excited about the opportunity to potentially serve with the AMM board in this capacity. There are two vice presidential positions up for grabs, with f ive individuals vying for the jobs. The other candidates, along with Parrott include Chris Ewen (Mayor, RM of Ratchet), Larry Johnson (Mayor, City of Selkirk), Kerri Riehl (Deputy mayor, City of Dauphin) and Brad Saluk (Reeve, RM of Brokenhead). Kam Blight, the Reeve for the RM of Portage la Prairie is currently the lone nominee for the position of AMM president.

What will Park Lake be?

As for just what type of lake it will end up being, that is also very much up in the air. The mayor and council have heard from many people suggesting how to best move forward.

Some are talking about just keeping the area as a wetland for geese, ducks and the bird sanctuary.

Others are pushing for an expanded recreation area, which could be used for canoes and kayaks. Any type of conversation into vastly improving the lake’s water circulation will begin and end, however, with available funds from the province and the town. The lake would require significant structural upgrades to improve the flow of water.

There are still more questions than answers out there when it comes to the future of Park Lake in Neepawa. The lake was breached on Canada Day, causing damage to the northeast and southeast parts of the community.

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Neepawa Town Council discussed the most recent updates it has received from the province, who sent inspectors out to exa m ine t he da mage.

Chief administrative officer Colleen Synchyshyn told councilors that provi ncia l eng i neer s were shocked by t he exact amount of destruction they saw.

“The first set of engineers came out and said ‘We understand there’s a little bit of water that left Park Lake’ and I told them ‘No, [Park Lake] is empty’. That was met with momentary silence on the other end of the phone.

When they came out and saw it for themselves, they went, ‘Oh, you really meant empty’ and, well yeah, empty means empty.

So, I think now they fully understand what we’re dealing with out here,” said Synchyshyn.

Unknown timeline New disaster financial assistance (DFA) programs related to the storms that struck the region were announced last week. The application deadline for local authorities is Dec. 10. Synchyshyn stated that they would be receiving more specific information on the programs and how to access them in the coming weeks.

As for the announcement of any exact number of funds individually distributed through the programs, mayor Blake McCutcheon said that remains unknown at this point in time. He also added that there are still many questions that need to be answered before the repair process can truly begin. Manager of operations Denis Saquet added to McCutcheon’s remarks, stating that this will be a long-term project.

These days, farmers and their lobby groups have to worry about more than just the weather and international commodity prices. As Canadians become more disconnected from the farm, education is becoming increasingly important.

The 2016 Census of Agriculture found that in 2015, 280,315 people were employed in agricultural operations across Canada, which is less than 1 per cent of the country’s population. While some urban Canadians still know people who actively farm or have jobs that are dependant on the agricultural sector, Canadians overall have lost their first hand knowledge of farming. “More and more, there’s a disconnect,” said Carson Callum, the general manager of Manitoba Beef Producers. Susan Riese, Manitoba Pork’s manager of Public Relations and Consumer Marketing Programs, echoes this, saying, “Many youngsters today have never even seen a live pig. They’re not aware that popular food items, like pork chops, bacon and sausage, comes from pigs.”

The decline in first-hand knowledge of food production comes at a time when consumers are increasingly interested in healthy eating. Despite this lack of knowledge, consumers are interested in knowing more— “This creates an opportunity to provide transparency and accurate information that demonstrate best practices,” she explained.

The Beautiful Plains Community Foundation (BPCF) drew their 19th winner for the 25 Days of Giving campaign on Friday, Sept. 11. To celebrate the Foundation’s 25th anniversary this year, they have been drawing every other week for an organization and the prize amount they will receive. After the 25 draws, BPCF will have given away a total of $25,000.

The 19th winning organization was the Neepawa & District Drop In Centre, with a prize amount of $750.

Kaleidoscope Concerts: To be or not to be… that is the question!

By Ron Nordstrom Submitted The Kaleidoscope Concert Series board members have been following the situation regarding COVID-19 public health and government restrictions very closely to help make the best decisions possible regarding the upcoming 2020-21 season.

Regretfully, the first two concerts scheduled for October and December have been cancelled. Although the complete f ive show season will not run this year, the board is hoping they will be able to present their planned concerts for January, February and March.

Restrictions may change at any time, therefore, it is impossible to predict the situation in the new year.

Kaleidoscope’s goal is to be able to present concerts in the new year with government recommended safety guidelines and restrictions in place. The board values its patrons; therefore, patron safety is a high priority.

Kaleidoscope president, Val Jarema, said, “Planning a season starts a year in advance. Before our last concert last March, the entire 2020-21 season was planned with all our performers in place. We were very excited about our upcoming season and were looking forward to five fantastic shows. Last February, contracts had been signed and pamphlets and tickets printed, anticipating normal circumstances.

With uncertainty in the Kaleidoscope concert season, due to the pandemic, we are unable to offer season tickets to our members. For any concerts we are able to present this year, tickets will now be sold on a per concert basis.”

The f irst concert is planned for Jan. 18, when Double the Trouble, a Manitoba-based family fiddling and vocal trio, takes the stage at the Roxy Theatre. Advance tickets will go on sale early in January at ArtsForward.

It is anticipated that only

around 100 tickets will be sold for each concert to meet government physical distancing requirements.

Kaleidoscope also values the businesses who financially support the concert series. Sponsors for the 2020-21 season were all in place before the COVID-19 pandemic

changed everyone’s lives in March. Because presenting any concerts this season is uncertain, Kaleidoscope is automatically extending all 2020-21 sponsorships to include the 2021-22 season.

Have we gone far enough?

I

think a lot of people are asking that question. Everyone would like to have society get back to normal after six months of coping with COVID-19. Many towns and regions have had no cases... yet! Some communities have seen a number of cases. I have it on good authority that communities that had a C-19 case or cases, went into a quarantine mode and the spread was reportedly successfully stopped.

We need to open up our economy. If some businesses want to ask customers to wear masks, that’s fine. If individuals feel safer wearing masks, that’s fine too.

All businesses need to be allowed to open up and most have.

Schools need to stay open. Sports and arts programs all need to open up, too. But what about the elderly and the vulnerable? Do they not need to be protected and be encouraged to protect themselves?

Absolutely! One thing C-19 has taught us is that we have not done a good enough job of protecting the elderly and vulnerable. C-19 sanitation procedures that have been actively preached, such as hand washing, staying at home when sick, quarantining infected people, all need more attention.

What we don’t need is a feardriven economic shut down. The economic and mental illness effects of the C-19 shutdown appear to have had a much deeper effect than the disease itself in Manitoba. Certainly, 18 Manitoban deaths, mostly among elderly, vulnerable people, is sad, but it’s not tragic. What is tragic is how many unnecessary steps are being taken. There are some precautions that are silly, not effective and expensive.

Ken Waddell is written by an American writer but I was not able to identify the original source. Nevertheless, the questions are valid.

“What is the magic formula that is going to allow us to sound the all clear?

Is it zero cases?

The only way that will happen is if we just stop testing and stop reporting.

Is it a vaccine?

It took many years for a chicken pox vaccine to be developed and many decades to eliminate the disease.

We have a flu vaccine that is only partially effective and many don’t take the shot.

Do you really think people will flock to get a fast-tracked, quickly-tested vaccine, whose long term side effects and overall efficacy are anyone’s best guess?

How long are we going to cancel and postpone events?

What if October’s numbers are the same as August’s?

What if next March is worse than this one was?

When do we decide quality of life outweighs the risks?

I understand Covid can be deadly or very dangerous for some people, but so are strawberries and so is shellfish.

We take risks multiple times a day without a second thought.

We know driving a car can be dangerous, we don’t leave it in the garage.

Many speed and don’t wear seat belts.

We know the dangers of smoking, drinking and eating fried foods, we do it anyway.

Is hugging Grandma really more dangerous than rush hour on the freeway?

Is going out with friends after work more risky than four-day-old gas station sushi?

Or operating a chainsaw?

When and how did we so quickly lose our free will?

Is there a waiver somewhere I can sign that says, ‘I understand the risks, but I choose a life with Hugs and Smiles, going to the fair, to church and hugging my Mom in her retirement home.’

I understand that there is a minuscule possibility I could die, but I will most likely end up feeling like crap for a few days.

I understand I could possibly pass it to someone else, if I’m not careful, but I can pass any virus on to someone else.

I’m struggling to see where or how this ends.

We either get busy living or we get busy dying.

When God decides it’s your time, you don’t get any mulligans, so I guess I would rather spend my time enjoying it and living in the moment and not worrying about what-ifs and maybes, and I bet I’m not the only one.”

he path wandered beside a gently flowing river. My dogs were with me, however, in reality, I was not with them.

Fall, with all her beauty and nuances, had entranced me.

Pausing, I felt the season– the crunch of the countless acorns beneath my feet, the gurgle of the river as it flowed through the sweeping branches of the HOMEBODIES swooping willow tree, the wind in the dry leaves, voices drifting on the cool air from Rita Friesen hidden sources and the call of the crows alerting others of my presence. The sounds of fall.

There is a scent, a smell, to this season, as well. This fall, too frequently, it is a smoky smell that dominates. Different from that of a backyard barbeque or bonfire, this is the smell of the despair that has struck too many communities, far from us in distance, near in kinship– homes and businesses destroyed, families and communities fragmented and countless wildlife homeless, as well. Taking time, one can catch the smell of harvest, differentiating the haying from the gathering of cereal grains and from the scent of a fresh garnered potato field. Did I catch all those at the river? No, but scent is a main key to memories and as I inhaled the smell of river, drying leaves and trampled grasses, all other images joined to enlarge the feeling of fall.

The sights of fall are both comforting and foreshadowing.

There has always been a fall and there will always be a fall.

Autumn is a time for gathering in, preparing for the bleakness of the white winter. At one curve of the trail, not even next to the river, beavers have been hard at work felling trees and dragging them to make a home. There is one miscalculated cut that amuses me– the poplar sapling is stuck in the branches of an evergreen, its base six feet above the earth. I wonder about going over and tugging it down… (Do beaver ever cut down evergreens?) I have not spotted the site of the dam or home, but keeping a watch for it. The squirrels have been working overtime. The empty husks of the acorns are proof of that. And there movement through the branches is hurried and urgent, collecting, storing, preparing. The colouring of the foliage is a never ending wonder. The red of the chokecherries, the gold of the aspen and the muted shades of the maple leaves. And the vines– so vibrant and distinct. The scene is ever changing and never changing.

There is a feel to fall, sweater weather in the morning, earlier sunsets and a breeze that encourages the closing of windows for the night. This feel lends urgency to the cleaning of gardens, completion of summer projects. Again, where these sights at the rivers edge? Within me and around me, they were present.

Simply stopping to see, to feel, to be, allows for thoughts and images to flit and float and sometimes linger. It is a path I frequent, both the walking and the thinking. It takes the tug of a dog to move me forward, leaving the site, but not the view.

The ‘greenfeed’ condominium

O

ne of t he lessons every farmer learns is that one simple act can have multiple consequences. That’s what happened on our family farm many years ago.

A sma l l creek r uns through the home quarter on our property. The hills on either side are too steep for cultivation, so they were used to pasture dairy and beef cattle. They were also home to dozens of gophers, who, because of their growing population, had to expand their living quarters.

They dug a large network of underground tunnels and left large mounds of dirt near the entrances to their lairs.

These hills and entrances posed a significant danger to our cattle. An accidental slip into one of these holes could result in a broken leg and the loss of an animal; so when the gopher population got out of hand, we took steps to control it.

What we did then (55 years ago) would be severely frowned upon today. We bought a small can of poison, mixed with a gallon

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein of oats and then put a little bit of the mixture in each gopher hole. Our gopher problem was solved for that year, but Mother Nature got even with us, as she always does whenever anyone tries to upset her delicate balance.

Our large gopher population attracted a large number of hawks and eagles to our farm. They had babies to feed and fresh gopher to them was like filet mignon to you and me. They dined like royalty– until their food supply suddenly disappeared. Then they moved to the neighbour’s pasture (he didn’t poison his gophers) and dined on the gophers they found there.

That was the first of many surprises Mother Nature had in store for us.

he hymn “In times like these, you need a Saviour...” really spoke to me this week.

Ruth Cay Jones wrote this hymn and put music to it during WWII, when

she saw the casualty list and heard about the slow progress of the allied troops at the boot of Italy. Food was rationed, discouragement was everywhere and to her, perilous times had come.

under control, a colony of field mice came to our yard, looking for a winter home. They chose the bottom four layers of our stack of 1,200 greenfeed bales.

Greenfeed, for those who may not know, is oats cut before the grain has ripened and compressed into small, 60 lb. square bales.

That bale stack gave the mice everything they needed— a warm place to live, lots of good food and room in which to build new nests as the colony grew. The mice moved in around midOctober and by late March the following year had turned that bale stack into a multi-level, multi-family condominium complex. For the next month, whenever we moved a bale, we had to move quickly to keep the mice from crawling up our pant legs.

How long could people live in times like that?

We again are living in perilous times. There is danger and there are risks.

We need to make sure that our anchor holds and grips the solid Rock.

The answer we will find in the chorus: “This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One.” When we know Jesus in a personal way and are a

Mystery solved?

We have received a few guesses on the mystery item published in the Sept. 4 edition (pictured near right). Danny Jackson suggested that it looked a little like the top of an antique screw jack (pictured far right). The square hole fits a piece of wood, the arms are used to turn; is the round piece at the bottom threaded? Another guess, this one from Jim Krzyzaniak, noted that the object that Gordon Levandoski found 45 years ago is a metering wheel that fits on a ground drive McCormick seeder that was most likely horse drawn. Things didn’t get back to normal until early May, when a large flock of hungry, white-faced sea gulls returned from their winter homes. They made quick work of the excess mice and within a few days, Mother Nature’s balance had been restored.

In the years since, both professionally and personally, I have witnessed similar events. One careless word, one impulsive action— that’s all it took to set in motion a chain of events that took many days to rectify. And in some cases, we are still living with the consequences of things that happened long before many of us were born.

The lesson we need to learn is this— think before you speak, think before you act, think before you make a promise or take on a long term commitment. Spoken words cannot be taken back.

Impulsive actions cannot be undone. Promises and commitments, once made, are binding. Be careful how you conduct yourself. You will have to live with the consequences for a long time to come. follower of Him, we can say with Ruth Cay Jones “In times like these, I have a Saviour... I have an anchor.

I’m very sure, my anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.”

May this hymn be a blessing at this special time of need when discouragement and unrest are all around us.

I must ask...

About two years ago, MP Candace Bergen attended a classroom in Miami, MB to read to the children.

Since most kids in Grade 3 will read for themselves, I assume these were six or seven-year-olds. Ms. Bergen and one of the teachers displayed a large sign, which read, “Trudeau is the worst.”

Young children know that there are bad people out there, people who steal, kill and hurt people. And here we have a trusted member of government telling these innocent kids that our democracy chooses the worst of all as our leader. What a terrible system democracy must be. Ms. Bergen should have been kicked out of office forthwith for such a heinous act. Instead, she has now been appointed deputy leader of the Federal Conservative Party.

I must ask. Is there any intelligence in the Conservative Party? More importantly, is there a conscience?

Thumbs up, thumbs down Thumbs up! Thank you Ken for that “corny history” in last week’s [Farmers’ Advocate] supplement. It took me back 70 years to when, even before the AC harvester, corn was cut with a single row corn binder, hand-pitched off horsedrawn racks into a stationary cutter that blew it into a concrete silo. There, it was spread and packed down by two men. You can take a man off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the man.

A woman’s life of long ago was a trying one, not only filled with work, but much loneliness. Isolation was very trying, especially during the winter months that those ladies did not get away from home for weeks or months on end. Today, we have no idea of the lack of social contact they experienced as we walk around with our cell phones glued to our ears and car keys in our hands. There were no telephones or radios. Libraries did not exist in most towns and not many magazines/papers were available or affordable.

Helpful advice and new information for women regarding health, child care, pregnancy, food preparation, etc. were non-existent. These women were eager for any social event to connect with other women and discuss the happenings in their lives.

Then, along came the Women’s Institute (WI) in 1897 at Stoney Creek, Ontario, founded

by Adelaide Hoodless. She had lost her small son after he drank unpasteurized milk.

Upset with her lack of knowledge, she decided to create an organization to help educate rural women on homemaking and motherhood. During the first meeting, a constitution was drafted and their “creed” was recorded: “A nation cannot rise above the level of its homes; therefore, we women must work and study together to raise our homes to the highest possible level.” They agreed that in the WI there was a place for every woman, regardless of their ethnic, religious or educational background. Courses were held in cooking, sewing, nutrition, childcare and home nursing, with demonstrations and discussion time.

In 1910 at Morris, Manitoba, a group of rural women met to talk about the new organization in Ontario. The early days of Manitoba’s WI were affiliated with the Department of Agriculture and were called Home Economic Societies. They spread quickly across the province. Neepawa’s WI organized that year with its charter number being two. One of the first tasks the WI did was set up rest rooms in rural towns. We associate rest rooms with being a bathroom, however back then, a rest room was a room to rest in. (The bathrooms were outside.) If you came to town with your husband, he may be there for many hours and a place to feed and care for the children was needed. They soon set up lending libraries in these rooms of rest. As well, you often met other moms there for socialization.

WIs became active in lobbying the Federal Government for changes in legislation regarding such things as the Old Age Pension Act, minimum wage for women, that medical expenses be made tax deductible, shelters for abused women be built and that is just the tip of the iceberg. During the depression years of the ‘30s, they set up educational courses on thrift and mental health. Both very much needed.

Today, in Manitoba, there are still Women’s Institutes and their vision is still to “strengthen women, families and communities”. The WI worldwide has over nine million members in over 70 countries still working with women to improve their homes and their communities.

What an amazing vision!

These “grown up” squares are delicious and not too sweet, perfect for a WI meeting.

Peach coconut squares Base: 2 cups flour 1/2 cup icing sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup cold butter

Topping: 1 cup diced peaches, fresh or frozen thawed 1/2 cup orange marmalade

1/2 cup sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp. lemon juice 1/4 cup flour 1 cup large flaked coconut

In a bowl, add the flour, sugar and salt. Cut in the butter until crumbly. Press the crumbs into an ungreased 9x13 inch pan and bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes until lightly browned.

In a blender, add all the topping ingredients except the coconut and blend until combined.

Pour over crust. Sprinkle with the coconut. Bake 23-28 minutes until golden brown around the edges and set in the middle. Cool before cutting into squares.

The Town of Neepawa has entered into a partnership with a new emergency notification system provider. All-Net Connect manages and distribute emergency alert messages to all residents via e-mail, smartphone apps, text messages, social media and voice phone lines.

Neepawa has been working with Code Red, an American based company for the past several years.

There were no issues with the Code Red agreement, but council and administration simply believe that changing to All-Net, which is a Canadian based service provider, will allow for better control and updating of data. Information on how to sign up can be seen on the town website.

Town staff are working on water and sewer for the residential portion of the property.

Some light work has begun at the north end of Riverside Cemetery. Site levelling and beautification will be occurring, once additional seasonal staff can be hired. A portion of the seasonal workers have returned to school for the fall, so the town will be looking to hire some temporary staff to fill those vacancies.

Flood restoration is ongoing across the community. Dust suppressant work has also been occurring recently. The asphalt recycling machine purchased by the town earlier this year has arrived and should be operational soon. Minor repairs

to damaged section of road within the community are still expected to happen as long as the weather holds Storefront Improvement Promo Time has gained approval for its funding request to the Storefront Improvement Program.

The business will receive $2,300 to assist with its updating of lighting, signage and exterior details on the front of its building.

The Storefront Improvement Incentive Program was created in 2019 to assist businesses within the downtown section of Neepawa with the cost of store frontage upgrades. In the program’s first year of operation, $10,000 was set aside in the Town budget for approved applications. For this year, the program has a budget of $20,000.

•A hole-in-one on #7 by Alex Genallie was a highlight at the Sandhills Golf Course Four Person Scramble in Carberry Sunday, Sept. 13. Eighteen teams participated. Witnesses to the hole-in-one were Dennis and Mavis Leclerc and Linda Howe.

First Flight winners were Darren Cameron (60) and Sheldon Fleury (61), while tops in the second flight were Matt Letkeman (66) and Bruce Turner (66). Troy Graham (69) and Beaver Klam (70) paced the third flight.

Linda Birch had the ladies’ longest drive and Suzie Scott was closest to the pin.

Men’s longest drive went to Ray Goodwill and Carmen Mustard was closest to the pin.

•In Teulon, high school classes were split in half, with some students attending in Days 1, 3 and 5, while the balance were

there on Days 2, 4 and 6.

However, they hope to get their Grade 12 classes back full time soon as they are expected to write provincial exams.

•Operating a junior hockey club is a challenge and even more so with the pandemic.

Reliable reports from Winkler indicate the Flyers lost $185,000 this past season.

This winter, everyone will wear a mask and they are limited to 35 per cent fan attendance for pre-season and 50 per cent for the regular season due to social distancing.

Carberry man and his best friend well known

Fred de Wind, who has lived in his wheelchair in Carberry for 15 months, can be seen around town with his Lions Foundation of Canada service dog, Archie. Fred was born in Holland and came to Canada in 1968. His 30-year career was as a mechanic and a hard rock underground gold miner, mainly at Red Lake, Ontario.

He speaks Dutch and German and served in the Dutch merchant navy prior to arriving in Canada at 18 years of age. Fred and his former French-Canadian wife of 30 years raised six children, two being Indigenous foster kids. He enjoys singing and can be seen with Archie in the front pew of the Evangelical Free Church every Sunday.

De Wind is diabetic and has lived with multiple sclerosis since 1998, which

has qualified him for a guide dog from Oakville, Ontario. Archie is a golden retriever/golden lab cross, who was trained for 18 months to pick up dropped articles and bark for help.

Fred’s doctor recommended him for a guide dog due to his MS condition. It costs

Fred about $40 a month for dog food, but Archie is worth $2,500 to train.

Fred’s first dog, Tiger, had to be retired as a pet, due to some health issues. Archie’s life expectancy is about eight to nine years.

Who said, “A dog is a man’s best friend?”

Jordyn Ham’s strong political connection

With students returning to school classes and postsecondary institutions, Jordyn Ham (20), 2018 MacGregor Collegiate’s Governor General award winner, returned for her third year at Carleton University in Ottawa, working towards a degree in Public Af fairs and Policy Management with a major in Economics.

She still has great respect

for her former English teacher, Tanya Polasek, who lives in Carberry, and helped her achieve a mark of 100 per cent on her Grade 12 provincial examination.

My first connection with Jordyn was when she was a restaurant waitress in MacGregor. In her Grade 12 year, she was the rural student representative on the Manitoba High School Athletic Association executive committee. She participated

in all school sports and was interested in MHSAA policy development and administration.

Always interested in politics, she ran as teenager in the last federal election against Kevin Lamoureux in the North Winnipeg constituency.

Ham is also an office assistant for the EdmontonWetaskiwin Member of Parliament.

A s a Pe t e r M c K ay supporter, she was quite involved in the recent

national Conservative leadership event. Jordyn Ham is an ambitious young lady and has a bright future ahead.

This is the first of a family of five. The remainder will be delivered within a month.

Her mot her, M rs. W. Patterson and Mr. W. Wells attended the tea on Monday at the nurses’ home which is given in honor of the new students.

While in Winnipeg they visited Alice Patterson, who is a patient in the Shriners’ Hospital. Mrs. E. Anderson accompanied them to Winnipeg, where she visited her daughter, Mrs. Nichol.

50 years ago, Thursday, September 24, 1970 Approva l was g iven Friday from the federal Depar tment of Public Works for the construction of a new post office building at the corner of Brown Avenue and Ellen Street in Neepawa.

A new bui ld ing for Neepawa has been in the planning stage for several years and various sites have been under study for its location. The need for a new building became i ncreasi ngly appa rent after Neepawa became a distribution centre three years ago, servicing about 60 post offices between Neepawa and Russell, McCreary and Glenella.

40 years ago, Thursday, September 25, 1980 Eden’s last elevator topples Sept. 18, after standing open and partly dismantled for the past year. Bert Pelletier, an Eden contractor, took

on the job with the help of Dann’s Auto Body and Frame of R id ing Mountain. The crew first cut through the building’s base, then looped a cable over the top and pulled.

A ‘train version’ of an airplane’s black box– a recording device used to track functions– will be examined by investigators, said [CPR spokesman Don] Bower.

30 years ago, Tuesday, October 2, 1990 A h igh-speed chase through Neepawa last Sunday around 3:45 a.m.– involving 94 cars– ended without incident.

The cars were part of a 119 car train at Minnedosa that had just detached the 94 cars before they started moving east along the rail line.

A spokesma n for t he Ne e paw a RC M P detachment said it was lucky no one was injured as the unmanned train made its way through town and several uncontrolled crossings.

“There was no engine, so people wouldn’t see any lights,” said the spokesman, adding that lights would have been activated at controlled crossings…

20 years ago, Monday, September 25, 2000 Manitoba Health has approved an $860,000 add it ion to Neepawa hospita l to house t he Com mun it y Ca ncer Program.

Marquette CEO Sandra Delorme made the funding announcement at the official opening of Neepawa’s communit y c a nc er pr o g r a m l a s t Wednesday.

“Current ly we have only one room set aside for chemotherapy (at Neepawa hospital,” Delorme said.

“This will allow us to fulfill our mandate in the delivery of chemotherapy treatment.”

A streamlined version of the camp occurred from Sept. 18 to 20 at the Yellowhead Centre, with 34 players participating. That number is lower than previous years, due to safety protocols and provincial sport guidelines related to COV ID-19.

Bertram Abram (Bert) Olmstead March 22, 1933 – July 23, 2020

It is with great love and sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Bert passed away at the age of 87. He was predeceased by his Mother and Father, Cora (Dempsey) and Vernon Olmstead, along with his sister Jean (Shareski), brother Ross and sister Shirley (Johannesson).

He leaves his wife Patricia (Milne), son Leslie (partner Erica), daughter Karen (partner Murray), and son Stuart to cherish his memory, along with grandson Andrew (wife Tasha), and great granddaughter Madison and brothers Lorne (Ruby) and Jim (Grace).

Bert farmed with his brother Ross until his sudden passing. His son Leslie joined the family farm at that time and they worked together for many years. Bert retired from farming in 2003, but was still active around the homestead. He started rebuilding buggies, carriages and sleds from his youth.

The first buggy he rebuilt was the one he rode to school in as a child. This buggy was subsequently given to his grandson Andrew and is now in use at the Dauphin Bible Camp to this day.

Bert had a love for old tractors and trucks. Bert's pride and joy was his Blue 1957 Chevy truck that he had saved and rebuilt in the 1980s. He loved to attend auction sales, whether to buy something specific or just visit and have a piece of pie. He would frequently be found at the local coffee shops, enjoying a visit with his many friends and neighbours. On many a Saturday night, Bert could be found cutting a rug at the local Legion and enjoying the camaraderie and music.

He was a charter member of the Carberry Elks Club and was very proud of the work they had done in the community over the years. He was deeply honoured to receive his 50 year pin along with several of his life long friends and cousins who had helped start the club.

He enjoyed a good visit, meeting new people, family get togethers and birthday celebrations.

Bert went in to care in the spring of 2019, spending several months at the Deloraine Care Home where he made new friends. In January he was able to come home to Carberry, residing in the Care Home. He was comforted by familiar faces of the other residents and the staff that knew him which took such good care of him.

Bert passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 23, 2020, with family by his side. We would like to thank the staff and doctors at the Carberry Care Home for their care and compassion in taking care of our Bert.

A service with family, neighbours and friends, followed by an afternoon come and go memorial, was held on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at the Carberry Fair Grounds.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the Carberry Care Home or Carberry Palliative Care.

We would like to thank everyone who has expressed their condolences upon the passing of our Bert. Your kind words have brought life to the memories you have shared.

Obituary Kenneth Dale Mutch

Ken was born May 29, 1942, he was the fifth of eleven children. He was a dedicated worker and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Those who knew him well knew of his fondness for old time dances and a good fiddle tune, as well as his hospitable nature. He was loved and survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda and Tyler, Jo-Anne and Alex. He leaves behind three dearly loved grandchildren, Brady and his wife Savannah, Britney, and Avery. He was also survived by ten siblings and many, many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of the Neepawa Hospital, who took part in his excellent care. A special thank you to Dr. Sandra Wiebe for all of your support and patience, and to those who were able to take time to sit and visit with him. This meant a lot to our family.

Isabel Noreen Schmall Isabel’s family sadly announce her passing on September 19, 2020 at Neepawa Hospital, after bravely coping with worsening health over several years.

Isabel was born in Gladstone November 2, 1932. The family followed Fred’s work with the railways, living in Ogilvie, Birdtail and Hummerston, before settling in Plumas. She worked as a nanny and telephone operator until the Plumas telephone office closed with the introduction of dial telephones. She and her sister Jeanette bought a house in Winnipeg. Isabel had many friends in the neighbourhood. She always looked forward to cooking meals for visiting family and babysitting her grandnieces. Isabel worked at Rayovac, Perth’s and briefly at Salisbury House. In retirement, she was actively involved with the Brooklands Seniors Centre.

Isabel moved to Gladstone in 2008 after Jeanette died.

She frequented the Gladstone Drop In Centre, where she spent many hours playing cards and making new friends.

Her large circle of cousins provided much enjoyment with their frequent birthday gatherings. Isabel was quiet and friendly. She accepted her declining health and limitations with dignity. Despite facing her final months in isolation due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Isabel coped by reaching out to friends and family daily, sharing a friendly hello. She was especially thankful to Heather Fisher for her help and friendship these last years.

It is with greiving hearts we say good bye to our brother, John Paul Vermette. He bore a heavy heart after the deaths of Bonnie and Deborha this year, his two loved sisters. He was born May 5, 1955 in Hagersville Ontario.

Isabel was predeceased by her parents Fred and Janet (Paynter) Schmall; sister Helen Jeanette; sister and brother-in-law Edith and Steve Dobchuk; and niece Sharon Denise Dobchuk.

She is survived by her dear brother and sister-in-law Jim and Donna Schmall, as well as nine nieces and nephews and their families, whom she loved – Don (Susan) Schmall, Val (Greg) Hutsal, Jan (Bob) Yerex, Coreen Lee, Reg Dobchuk, Karen (Grant) Wood, Susan (Aaron Klein) Dobchuk, Kim Dobchuk and Fred (Chris) Dobchuk.

The Neepawa Middle School (NMS) received a handmade gift this week.

On Tuesday morning, t h e N e e p a w a M e n ’s Shed presented a freshly completed lost and found rack/centre. The cost of the project was to be $475 to cover materials.

However, the Men’s Shed elected to give it away for free, as the cost of materials was covered by community donations.

Meet the Neepawa Men’s Shed

By Casper Wehrhahn Neepawa Banner & Press Readers of the Banner & Press may have heard of the Neepawa Men’s Shed from time to time. However, not all may be familiar with just what the group is or does.

Colin McNairnay, Neepawa Men’s Shed member, spoke to the Banner & Press on the details, and the group’s current state.

“The Men’s Shed originally started in Australia about 20 years ago for seniors who have downsized or live in an apartment, so they don’t have their own workshop anymore,” said

McNairnay. “It provides an opportunity to get together and visit while working on a project, shoulder to shoulder. It’s actually less about the project itself and more about the socialization, the opportunity to do something and to do something with your hands.”

The Neepawa Men’s Shed is funded completely by community donations, such as those from Miles for Mental Health, the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation and the Community Christmas Dinner. The Neepawa group never charges for their time spent on a project, only desiring to

Current state McNairnay relayed that the Men’s Shed would typically meet once a week for a few hours at a time, either working on a project or getting breakfast together at the local Chicken Corral.

COVID-19 had separated the group for some time, but the group now seems to be back on track. The key item for the group right now is the pursuit of a home for the Men’s Shed.

“Right now, we meet to work or socialize at the workshop of our fellow member, Brad Mummery.

But we’d like another space

to go to, to just play crib for example,” McNairnay explained. “Even if it’s someone in the community offering up their garage– preferably heated so we can meet all year round– because some people may have concerns about sawdust being a health hazard for them.

We want a space where we can all gather safely, when we’re not working or getting breakfast.”

The second item on their agenda is getting more members. At present, the group has a total of 10, but is more than happy to welcome more.

“Although the idea was originally strictly for senior men, we’re open to men of any age,” McNairnay relayed.

Disaster relief good news for Neepawa, surrounding region

By Eoin Devereux Neepawa Banner & Press It’s news that mayor Pat Skatch and many others living in the Town of Minnedosa have been hoping to hear for quite some time. The Manitoba government recently announced new d isaster financial assistance (DFA) programs to help people and communities affected by several massive weather events that hit in the spring and summer.

Minnedosa was one of many municipalities forced to declare a state of local emergency, due to these storms, which brought with them record rainfall and extreme flooding. Mayor Skatch noted to the Banner & Press that the full impact of just what happened is still being evaluated.

“Estimates right now, are in the $5 to 5.5 million dollar range when it comes to the [local] damage. We’re still reviewing just how much we were affected by these storms,” stated Skatch. “With this announcement of new support from the province, it will help the community, help individuals and give them hope. We don’t know yet, just how much we’ll be able to access through the programs. It is just over $29 million that’s available and there are several municipalities that’ll be looking to for help in the recovery process. At least it’s something that will ease the burden.”

Skatch added that the hope is to have the money lined up and in place for major repairs to begin in 2021.

Announcement well received in Neepawa A little further east dow n t he Yel lowhead Highway, the Town of Neepawa also breathed a sigh of relief from the DFA announcement. Though not as severely hit by the storms as Minnedosa was, Neepawa mayor Blake McCutcheon said there are still some notable repairs that will need to be done.

“In regard to repairs

and expenses with the tow n, repa i r s w i l l be necessary for our berms, costs associated to the temporary bridge [to access Park Lake]. What we believe it will cost to repair Park Lake but that’s a more complicated one.

And again, that’s the way it will be for individual home owners. They will be able to submit their expenses,” McCutcheon said. “Whatever comes out of this program for us is going to be helpful. I’m very happy that the province made the decision to move forward with this.”

The financial cost from the damage in Neepawa is still being tabulated, though unoff icial numbers indicated it could be at around $600,000, excluding Park Lake. McCutcheon noted that no numbers being discussed within the community are official yet, because there are still outstanding invoices to be assembled. He also added that ultimately, the provincial government will review the funding requests and decide what amount are supported.

“It might not be 100 per cent. You may only qualify for 85 per cent or 60 per cent. We just don’t know and really, won’t know until, likely 2021,” said McCutcheon.

The DFA application dead line for local authorities and those in the private sector is scheduled for Dec. 10.

Homeschooling predictions Area local shares thoughts on the current state of homeschooling

In an article with CTV News, Canadian Centre for Policy A lternatives Manitoba director Molly McCracken states that, 1.7 per cent of of enrolled children, or 3,700 out of 210,000 opted for homeschooling in 2019. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, readers may be wondering what option families are opting for. It is too soon to know the exact numbers for the province this year, as homeschoolers have up to 30 days from the start of the school year to notify the government.

Still, Lariss Macdonald of Minnedosa (a “veteran homeschooler”, Manitoba Association for Schooling at Home member and admin for the Westman Homeschool Connection’s social media), has noticed an increase.

“Our Westman Homeschool group alone has gone from around 200 members to over 500 since spring,” said Macdonald. “I haven’t seen the [provincial] stats yet, but Manitoba Education [did talk about an increase.]”

homeschooling families is due to the pandemic.

“My wild guess would probably be that 70 per cent [of the increase is people] who are doing it because of COVID-19, whereas the rest are people who were considering it before or always wanted to but COVID was the push they needed,” Macdonald estimated.

“Then there’s another small percentage where they’re ‘O.K., I’ve always wanted to homeschool, now I see a group name out there so I can join’, or they were already planning to but just hadn’t contacted the group previously.”

The unknowns When it comes to homeschooling beginners, the most frequently asked question Macdonald sees is a big one… “Where do I start?”

“It’s overwhelming. A lot of people say, ‘What do I do for Grade 3?’ but there is no one-size-fits-all answer for that, so it’s hard,” Macdonald explained. “There isn’t a one-stop place to [find a curriculum], so it takes time to figure out what style of homeschooling– and there are different philosophies to education. So you can do public school at home, but that’s not the best way to homeschool. Finding out what fits your family, and then choosing a curriculum that fits within those goals and philosophies of your own is a lot of work and research to find out what works best for you– without, hopefully, paying too much money on curriculum in the meantime.”

Macdonald told the Banner & Press that there’s a lot of unexpected surprises,

too. For example, the fact that you don’t have to start out with a curriculum at all.

“You can take time to just be a family, to read and play games– to discover what education will be like for your family,” Macdonald relayed. “It doesn’t have to be the same as school at home. There’s a lot of freedom in homeschooling.

It’s not merely an education choice, it’s also a lifestyle for us, and I love spending my time with my kids.”

Macdona ld pred ict s that a great number of COVID-19 homeschoolers will put their kids back into public schools, merely opting for it as a safety measure at this time. However, Macdonald also predicts that a fair number of people will like the option more than they had initially expected.

Emergency cash helps Carberry area organizations

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press The federal government’s Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) has benefitted countless organizations in communities across Canada through their local community foundations. The ECSF granted $40,000 to each foundation to give to organizations who have been impacted by COVID-19 and need funds to adapt their operations. The Carberry Area Community Foundation (CACF) distributed their allotment to six local organizations.

Technology a vital piece of the puzzle The Carberry North Cypress Library received a substantial grant in the amount of $4,025. Carson Rogers, branch supervisor at the library, explained that they used the money to get an iPad lending program started. They’ve purchased eight iPads that people will be able to borrow, with an emphasis on needs related to COVID-19.

Rogers explained that they will be partnering with Services for Seniors to give local seniors an opportunity to learn how to use the iPads so they can video chat with family who might be far away and can’t visit because of COVID-19 restrictions. He added that they also wanted to have this program available in case students need to go back to remote learning and don’t have access to the necessary technology at home. Rogers noted that they will have their library’s online resources available on the iPads as well, but the main reason for the program was in response to COVID-19.

Carberry Collegiate was given $12,500 from the ECSF. With the grant, they were able to purchase 30 Chromebooks for the school, which were in place for the beginning of the new school year. Principal Bruce McCallum noted that both students and staff have already been getting use out of them. He added that they will also be good to have as an option for students who don’t have access to a computer at home if remote learning becomes necessary. “It’s certainly one of those things we’re grateful the [Carberry Area Community] Foundation’s been able to support and it’ll alleviate some of the stress that’s been caused by the pandemic,” McCallum expressed.

Carberry Personal Care Home also used their $750 grant for technology. They purchased bluetooth headphones and speakers for the residents to help provide them with some entertainment and relaxation now that visitation has to be more limited within personal care homes. “As ECSF applications came in to Carberry and Area Community Foundation, it became quite clear that necessary technology was a vital missing piece of the puzzle. We are thrilled to have been able to assist Carberry Collegiate, our local library, as well as our care home by providing funds for this much-needed equipment,” stated Brianna Renwick, executive director of CACF. Possible event for Arts Council The Carberry Plains Arts Council received $800 that was meant to help pay for an event that was cancelled. Amy Urquhart, administrative director for the Arts Council, explained that they had planned to do an outdoor movie

in Carberry, but the weekend it was scheduled for was the same weekend that the province announced Prairie Mountain Health was going to be in the orange level of COVID-19 response, restricting group sizes to 10 both indoors and outdoors.

Urquhart added that because they weren’t able to use the money for its originally intended purpose, she has requested permission to redirect the funds to a kids’ Halloween drop-in. She noted that she hasn’t heard back yet and is also contacting businesses that donated money for the outdoor movie to see if she can re-appropriate those funds as well. The drop-in would consist of an obstacle course in the community hall. A waiting space would be set up outside with bales for seating and they would have different age groups scheduled for different times to reduce congestion and comply with physical distancing guidelines.

Urquhart added that they plan to get the teens from the drama club involved, as well. She said they’d be playing characters in the obstacle course, while helping to keep kids moving so they don’t cluster within the course.

Whether the Halloween drop-in happens or not depends not only on funds, but of course on public health guidelines as well. “Hopefully it happens, because that seems to be the theme this year, you plan something and it gets cancelled last minute,” Urquhart expressed. She added that the Arts Council was very happy that they were able to get the ECSF grant. “We’re so appreciative. The approval for that came so quickly,” she explained, adding that with all the crazy things going on this year, it was great that they had the opportunity to apply for some extra funding.

Food cupboard gets filled The Carberry Pastoral Charge, Carberry United Church’s outreach organization, received $5,000 for their food bank. Myrna Wells, of the Carberry Community Food Cupboard (CCFC), explained that the grant money is being used to restock the food cupboard so that community members who need it can continue to access it.

“People who have accessed the cupboard leave with food and hope for their families,” Wells explained. Renwick added, “COVID-19 has been, and continues to be, a financial strain for many individuals and families. We were pleased when our local food cupboard reached out, so that an additional $5,000 worth of groceries would be available to our community.”

Outdoor learning space to come The largest sum went to RJ Waugh elementary school in Carberry, with a total of $16,925. Principal Dayna Galatiuk noted that they have used the money to order an outdoor classroom for the school. Galatiuk explained that the outdoor classroom will consist of seven cement tables, as well as a handicap accessible table. She noted that they wanted some outdoor learning space because public health guidelines suggested that being outdoors reduces the risk of COVID-19 spreading. Unfortunately, while they ordered the outdoor classroom months ago, Galatiuk said it’s currently on backorder and they don’t know when it will arrive. “Hopefully it comes soon, or we won’t be able to get much use out of it this year,” she noted. Once

in place, the classroom will be a permanent installation at RJ Waugh, so students will be able to benefit from outdoor learning for years to come. “Allowing children from Kindergarten to Grade 4 to have an opportunity for outdoor learning during this pandemic is a great cause that we were happy to support,” Renwick expressed. “We look forward to seeing this project take off, as soon as all of the outdoor classroom items arrive.”
