It was a record-setting weekend for Neepawa’s Daxx Turner at the 2019 Bison Classic in Winnipeg.

On Friday, Feb. 1, Turner, who was competing under the Prairie Storm Athletics banner, completed a triple jump of 13.93 metres, a new provincial record for a male athlete under 18 years old.

This jump shattered the old mark of 13.84 metres.

Turner noted to the Banner & Press that he went into the event with no set expectations on how he would fare. He added when he hit this jump and saw what the official distance was, he was surprised.

“I knew it was a solid jump but didn’t expect that,” said Turner.

Turner is currently the top-ranked U18 triple jump athlete in the country, according to Athletics Canada.

Other notable results from Neepawa based athletes at the competition included Ben Perrett finishing ninth in the men’s 300 metre, with a time of 35.81 seconds, and Lara Denbow finishing in a tie for third in the women’s high jump, with a jump of 1.61 metres.

The Bison Classic is an annual event which features the top track and field athletes from all across western Canada.

Heritage Co-op coming to Rivers Ownership to change April this year

Banner Staff Neepawa Banner & Press Heritage Co-op has purchased the Rivers Bigway Foods store and is proud to officially become a member of the Rivers community in spring 2019. Heritage Co-op made the official announcement in a press release on Feb.1 and in it, stated that the current owners and Heritage Co-op management and board are excited about the future of the store.

While the news was regarded as “the worst kept secret in Rivers”, the Neepawa Banner couldn’t publish anything until the news was officially confirmed Friday morning.

In an interview with The Neepawa Banner, Heritage Co-op General Manager, Lorne Zacharias said, “The most exciting part is that the residents and staff are excited that this is happening.

We’re ready to show Rivers the Co-op difference, and that extends beyond great products and service. We strive to be a true member of the communities we serve, and that means supporting community groups and initiatives and caring about the causes our community members care about.”

Currently, there are seven staff and all Rivers Bigway Foods employees will be given the opportunity to remain employed at the store once Heritage Co-op takes ownership.

changes will be gradual, “There will be a new Point of Sale System (POSS) and some signage changes.” As to future changes, Zacharias took a time-will-tell approach, “We hope to see the need for expansion, but that depends on the community support. We will be working very hard to give Rivers area residents every reason to shop at home. It’s the key to success”

“Very good news” The current Rivers Bigway owners, Cheryl and Kelly Beilner, are very happy with the sale. Cheryl said in an interview, “This is very good news. We listed the store in July and we called our agent about Heritage, we hoped it would be them who bought the store.” Asked what their plans are now, Cheryl said, “I am from Ontario and Kelly is from B.C. This [store in Rivers] was a five year plan that expanded to eight. We are planning to buy a restaurant in the Kenora-Lake of the Woods area. It’s like going home for me.” The Beilner’s last day will be March 31 and Cheryl said, “Heritage will take over on April 1 and I think they plan to be open after only a day or two after that.”

Carberry resident releases cookbook in support of ALS cure

Imagine gradually losing your ability to move freely.

Picture losing the ability to speak without the aid of technology. Perhaps it starts with muscle loss in your hands and arms, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech, or beginning to trip and fall. Visualize what it is like to go through extensive testing to identify the cause through a process of elimination, only to discover the ailment that befell you has no cure. That is what it’s like to have ALS.

Facts fail to deter the search for a cure These facts fail to deter prospects for a cure. Cheryl Orr-Hood, a Carberry resident and accomplished chef, has cooked up a recipe for hope with the release of her new cookbook entitled “Taste Bud Pleasers”. Her mother, Jean Orr, gave her the idea 20 years prior to Orr-Hood’s ALS diagnosis in 2016.

Published just before Christmas, the book has around 120 pages of recipes for meal items, desserts, and basics such as pie doughs.

The recipes are a mixture of pre-existing items that Orr-Hood has elevated to be more delicious, as well as originals. The book also lists replacement spices with the recipes if you’re missing one of the needed items. Orr-Hood has catered to weddings, family gatherings, participated in farmers markets and provided meals for potato harvesters.

Orr-Hood grew up in Carberry, attending Carberry Collegiate, and went on to study at the University of Manitoba.

She graduated university with a degree in Home Economic and a major in Foods and Nutrition.

What ALS is Short for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS is described by the ALS Society of Manitoba as a “rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease” which results in the “loss of nerve cells and pathways (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord.”

In other terms, it can be said that the brain is unable to properly communicate with the body. This leads to the progressive paralysis of the body’s “voluntary muscles”, such as the muscles in the chest, hands and legs.

Orr-Hood’s desserts then garnered the attention of a large Toronto magazine. “[Publication of the cookbook] was time consuming,” said Bruce Hood, Cheryl’s husband.

“She’s in a position now where she can’t talk [without the use of technology].”

Hood noted that OrrHood was able to provide input and corrections by aligning a small, silver dot on the tip of her nose with a screen keyboard, suspended roughly two feet in front of her, Orr-Hood is able to type out what she wants to say and it would then be spoken for her by the device.

Book receives good response The response to the cookbook so far, Hood relayed, has been a good one.

“We’re really happy with the support,” expressed Hood. “We’ve sold around 300 copies so far.”

Sold at $20 each, all proceeds from the books benefit the ALS Society of Manitoba. This means that, at the time of interview, the book has generated about $6,000 for ALS research.

“We’re not considering expanding at the moment,” Hood stated. “However, if we find somebody else willing to distribute the books, we’d consider it.”

In closing, Hood restated his gratitude for the support received, as ALS is a relatively rare disease and receives less support as a result.

To afford or not to afford

I

n a letter to the editor in the Minnedosa Tribune, Elvin Birch poses the question of whether Minnedosa and area can afford a new arena. The letter seems well documented and raises a lot of questions that don’t seem to have been part of the public debate. It is the kind of debate that every community goes through, but few have the debate as thoroughly as they should.

Back in the late 1960s, Neepawa didn’t go through the debate as deeply as Minnedosa is doing now, but the circumstances were different then. Neepawa’s old arena was in really tough shape and had to be replaced. It was a similar situation to what Rivers faced a few years back. When an arena becomes structurally unsafe, it’s time to get a new one IF a community can afford it. As a property owner in Rivers, our family was fully aware of the cost to us and we voted on the “yes” side.

Back in the ‘60s, Neepawa had several different factors.

The Town was growing, albeit ever so slightly and due in large part to people moving in from surrounding rural areas. The old arena had outlived its useful lifespan. In addition, the largest hall in the town was the Legion and the salt plant had just closed.

Many people may not know that Neepawa’s Yellowhead Centre’s hall was the warehouse for the salt wall. Built like Fort Knox, it was transformed, and continues to be upgraded 47 years later, into a community hall with an official occupancy capacity of over 700.

placed and the arena was close to being condemned, if my memory serves me correctly. In addition, the councils of the day, now a combined town and municipal council, saw the need and moved forward. Some would say too aggressively but nonetheless, the result is a curling rink, arena and community hall that is attractive, well used and is the location for many events. Those events include some big curling bonspiels such as the Golden Gals Provincials this past weekend. Rivers has also been able to hold some hockey schools and extra tournaments, a hope and dream that all towns have, including Minnedosa.

Considering the long debate and struggle in Minnedosa, Elvin Birch raises a point that may not have been considered closely enough. Minnedosa’s facility needs work, all arenas do. The question Birch raises is whether the existing ice surface area is structurally sound. Birch says the engineering reports say it is.

Mr. Birch raises some significant doubts, such as how to dispose of the old arena and how the loss of the Husky over-charged tax revenue will impact future tax bills.

Most rural Manitoba towns would say they can’t survive without an arena. It’s a matter of finding what level of arena expense the town and area can support. Building may be the easy part, sustaining and maintaining is the harder part. It appears that Rivers got it mostly right and their model may be one to learn from.

othing quite beats the sense of community in rural Canada.

I had two reminders of this in the last week.

Like many rural Manitobans, I’m involved in a couple of local organizations and one in particular, the Roxy Theatre, found itself in need of help on short notice. Our shows are volunteer run and on this one day, our crew was coming from out of town and it was storming.

We reached out to our com- MY munity of sup- PERSPECTIVE porters to see if anyone in town would be available that night Kate and within five Jackman-Atkinson minutes, some local volunteers had stepped forward. We had more people contact us afterwards as well.

The Roxy is something distinctly unique to Neepawa and I’m always blown away by the support it receives from the community. However, similar stories are being told across rural Manitoba.

Whether it’s a rink, a hall, a sports team or an event, many rural Manitobans give their time to make our communities richer.

Statistics support this; as part of their Canada 150 releases, Statistics Canada looked at volunteerism. Overall, they found that rates of volunteerism were greater in rural and non-urban areas. In 2010, 53 per cent of Manitobans reported volunteering, above the Canadian average of 47 per cent.

Covering stories around the region over the last decade has impressed upon me the important role volunteers play in rural communities. The quality of life we enjoy wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers.

The other reminder came out of discussions with friends living in a larger centre. For the bulk of the 20th century, it was believed that rural residents had to go to large urban centres for a successful career. I think the tides have changed, the rest of Canada just hasn’t realized it yet. Without a doubt, there are many jobs that require living in a large centre, but many of them don’t. For the average Canadian looking for a rewarding job or career, there’s not a lot that rural communities can’t offer.

Not only are there jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities, there are intangibles. Rural communities have affordable housing, not just when compared to the astronomical housing values of Vancouver or Toronto. In rural Manitoba, you can buy a nice house that won’t require you to sell a kidney and your first born to make your monthly payments. Don’t want to commute? Rural life can help with that and if you chose to live out in the country and commute to work, the drive will be a pleasant one, of a reliable and consistent duration.

Perhaps the biggest benefit to rural employment is that while we might not be able to offer every job imaginable, more true opportunities exist because people can hire based on reputation. When you don’t know the person you’re hiring, your decision has to be based on resumes, official credentials or a strong demonstration of past experience. When you know, even a few steps removed, the person you’re hiring, you can forgo some official qualifications if you know the person is a hard worker, a keen learner and someone who is good to work with. Those are the skills that can be much more relevant to a person’s actual success in their job and you just can’t know those sorts of things if don’t know someone, or know someone who knows someone.

I have worked the majority of my career in rural Manitoba and I don’t think I would have had the kinds of opportunities I have had if I had worked somewhere else. I certainly know I wouldn’t have had the chance to make an impact on the broader community if I lived somewhere larger, and I can’t help but wonder if I even would have wanted to.

s they arrived at work the morning of Feb. 15, so the story goes, the workers of a flower and gift shop were greeted by a young man in an obvious state of panic. After buying a large bouquet of flowers and several other gifts, he hurried out the front door.

When the staff asked where he was going, he told them that he was going over to his girlfriend’s house. He had forgotten to get some things for Valentine’s Day. He was hoping that what he had purchased would be a “peace offering” sufficiently generous to keep him out of the proverbial dog house.

An hour later, he was back at the flower shop.

His girlfriend had refused every one of his gifts and he wanted his money back.

The story ends at that point, so we don’t know how much of a refund, if any, he received. Nor do we know if the girlfriend he had on Feb. 13 was still his girlfriend on Feb. 15. You can draw your

If this was an isolated incident, I probably wouldn’t comment on it.

Unfortunately, it isn’t. It is easy to go through life taking people for granted and then, on special occasions like a birthday, anniversary, Christmas or Valentine’s Day, we spend significant amounts of money on dinners out and special gifts to show them that they are special.

Now there is nothing wrong with purchasing nice gifts or going out for meals on special occasions. These are highly commendable actions. But if they are all we do for those we say we love, then we should not be surprised if they question the depth of our love.

s I wandered through the air port, filling in time, I was drawn to the bookstore. No surprise. I was looking for a magazine to divert my attention during the take off. What I saw was another book by an author that I enjoy, respect, and whose writing challenges me. ‘David and Goliath’

by Malcolm Gladwell. The bookstore has a wonderful policy, buy the book, read the book and return it within six months for a 50 per cent refund. Great plan, but I knew I would be keeping the book, right alongside ‘The Tipping Point’, and ‘Outliers’, by the same author. The sub title ‘Underdogs, Misfits, and The Art of Battling Giants’, was the clincher.

Vietnam

Vietnam is a long, narrow nation shaped like the letter S. Its neighbours include China to the north and Laos and Cambodia to the west, with the South China Sea along its entire coast. Most travelers are captivated by Vietnam’s wonderful natural beauty, rich history and ancient traditions. Vietnam is home to 54 official ethnic groups, the majority of which live in highland areas. In the north, densely forested mountainous terrain, terraced rice fields, rivers, waterfalls and caves are abundant. To the south lies the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta is a low-level plain, not more than three metres above sea level and besieged by hundreds of small rivers, canals and mangrove swamps. Vietnam has a climate that ranges from monsoon tropical to cool and temperate. Vietnam is a large exporter of cashews, black pepper, rice and coffee.

In Vietnam, having a good name is more important than any material possession. Polite behaviour is highly valued, as are their elders for their experience and wisdom.

Vietnam’s history has been one of political struggle and unrest. It was conquered by the Chinese and then the French, who left a culinary mark on Vietnam, which still exists today. Despite this influence, they have managed to keep strong and prevalent culture and rituals. The long seacoast and many inland waterways provide fish and other aquatic species, that are staples in the Vietnamese diet. Vietnamese cuisine features fresh herbs, lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood, combined with traditional cooking techniques that avoid frying. This cuisine is considered among some of the healthiest in the world.

Vietnamese cuisine also offers cultural delicacies that are unfamiliar to us. Cow intestine soup (pha lau bo) is a dish many locals love. Vietnam’s ethnic Khmer are among the country’s most adventurous eaters of insects, tarantulas and scorpions. Cricket on a cracker anyone? Hot vit lon is a developing duck embryo, which is boiled and eaten from the shell. Snake wine, which is made by steeping whole snakes in rice wine for their venom or essence, is commonly drunk for health, vitality and restorative purposes.

Vietnam’s national dish is pho, a rice noodle soup with beef, which is available at any time of day, at home, in fancy restaurants or in roadside stalls. If you want to make this recipe faster and easier, our local Co-op grocery store sells pho broth in the soup section.

Pho Bo (Beef Noodle Soup) 1 litre beef stock 1 Tbsp. fish sauce 2 cloves garlic, peeled and 1 package flat rice finely minced noodles (100g) 2 tsp. grated ginger 200g steak, thinly sliced 1 small chili pepper beansprouts 2 whole cloves cilantro leaves or basil 1 tsp. whole peppercorns leaves or both 1 star anise lime wedges 1 stick cinnamon fish sauce 3-4 green onions, sliced Bring the stock, garlic, ginger, chilli pepper, cloves, peppercorns, star anise, cinnamon and half the green onions to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Strain, discarding the solids, and bring the liquid back to a boil. Season with fish sauce. Pour a kettle of boiling water over the noodles and leave to soak for 8-10 minutes, then drain and rinse. While noodles are soaking, add the steak to the simmering stock. Do not cook, turn the heat off, as the hot broth will cook the beef. Divide the noodles between 3 large, deep bowls. Add the remaining green onions to the broth, then pour broth over the noodles.

On a serving tray, have the bean sprouts, sliced cilantro or basil leaves, lime wedges and fish sauce. Each person can the choose items from the platter to add to his or her bowl of broth and noodles.

Forty years of constant change Kelwood Legion holds benefit down on the farm fundraiser

Local farmer Murray Newton brought his story to the Neepawa Rotary Club on Jan. 30. Based on 40 years of farming, his statistics and price comparisons brought out some mind-boggling facts.

Newton and his brother, Weldon, began taking over the family farm, located four miles west and one mile south of Neepawa, in the late 1970s. He listed the basic farm equipment and their values in 1978 and in 2018. In 1978 the 510 Massey Combine cost $23,000 and the CI960 combine was $13,500. The F600 (3 ton) truck was $10,588 and the little brother F150 was $5,198. The 13006 tractor cost $27,007, the 810 Volvo tractor was $27,007 and the used grain dryer was $5,000.

Fast forward 40 years and the New Holland combine comes on the farm at $459,000 (plus a header); the grain truck, now a tandem style, logs in at $65,000. Little brother F150 is now $45,000 and the MFD tractor is $200,000.

The grain dryer is $60,000.

The two staple crops have been wheat and canola.

Wheat sold for $2.90 to $3.80 per bushel back in 1978 and today brings $7.

Canola was $6 a bushel back in the day and was $10-11 in 2018. Newton said that in addition to wheat and canola, they have tried growing hull less barley, feed wheat, faba beans and rye grass. The mainstay crops today are wheat, soybeans and oats. Crops used to be sprayed once each season and are now sprayed three to four times a season.

changed too. In 1978, the Newton brothers worked along side their parents, who have both since passed away. Murray married his wife Donna and they raised a family. Bachelor brother Weldon, who toiled not only on the farm, but in different farm organizations, has now sold his part of the operation to Murray and Donna’s son, Scott.

While times, prices and farm practises go through massive changes, the basic message is the same, the farmers feed us all.

1978, the books were kept manually, in an account book. In 1984, the Newton family invested $10,000 in a computer and tech support. Newton told a story that the computer had a 20 MB hard drive and he was advised he would never, ever need a bigger computer. That comment brought a big laugh from the audience, as regardless of what application a person uses a computer for today, that miniscule hard drive would not do the job.

Although the stormy weather would have scared off the groundhogs, it did not deter the Kelwood Legion #50 patrons from attending a Feb. 2 benefit fundraiser, held to support a local couple whose home had recently been severely fire damaged.

Legion president, Larry Henton, was deeply appreciative of the generosity and effort put forward by everyone in order to bring together the successful event in less than a week.

Despite the inclement weather, the Legion was packed to capacity and the supper, raffles and silent auction raised close to $6,000.

Larry particularly wanted to praise the big-heartedness of the neighbouring Hutterite colonies, “Our Hutterite friends really stepped up to the plate, along with all the other donors and volunteers, who helped us hold a great evening in support of a pair of our friends and neighbours. It is important in times of tragedy for the Legion to act as a community focal point for us to rally and support each other.”

Farmers in the Kelwood area have joined together in a cooperative grain drying venture which got underway this week. A committee made up of members from both the Pool and UGG elevator associations has engaged Neil McCaskill of Gladstone, who has set up his grain dryer near the Pool elevator. Some of the grain is being cleaned at the Pool elevator before going to the dryer, which considerably cuts drying time.

Former Neepawa resident receives Manitoba-wide warrant issued for national recognition to North Battleford, Sask., to complete an internship.

She secured a job the following year with Lloydminster Catholic School Division, as a Learning Assistance Teacher. Come 2012, Hilstrom moved to Estevan, Sask., and obtained a job at Hillcrest Elementary School as Vice Principal from 2013 to 2015. Hilstrom then gained her current position as Principal of Sacred Heart School/École Sacré Coeur in the fall of 2015.

One of Neepawa’s former residents is receiving national recognition in the educational field. The announcement was made on Tuesday, Jan. 29, that Amber Hilstrom, daughter of Sandra and Brian Wetherill, would be recognized as one of 30 outstanding principals in Canada this year. The award, “Canada’s Outstanding Principals”, is given out by The Learning Partnership every year.

Hilstrom is the principal at Sacred Heart School/ École Sacré Coeur in Estevan, Sask. Her strong focus on technology in the classroom played a role in her recognition.

Elevating education The Learning Partnership is a Canadian charity that prepares students to “thrive in a diverse, connected and changing world.” The organization has been active in elevating student’s educational experiences since 1993, and is celebrating its 15th year of the outstanding principals award and program this year.

national selection committee. Throughout the process, the nominee’s demonstrations of innovation, leadership and use of creativity to find solutions and opportunities within their schools is kept in mind.

The recipients are then officially recognized for those efforts at an awards celebration in Toronto and join their fellows in the National Academy of Canada’s Outstanding Principals, which boasts over 500 members.

will be on Feb. 26.

Following her graduation from NACI in 2000, Amber Hilstrom moved on to attend Minot State University, where Hilstrom says she had the privilege of amazing college professors and mentors.“Their guidance, encouragement, and mentoring have helped make me the person I am today,” stated Hilstrom.

By Alan Gillies G.E.M. Media The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are requesting the assistance of the general public.

A Manitoba-wide endorsed warrant has been issued for the arrest of Greg Mitchell Levasseur, of Neepawa.

Levasseur is wanted on charges of assault in an incident alleged to have occurred in the early evening of Saturday, Jan. 19.

According to a statement made to police, at approximately 7:30 p.m. that night, a dispute ocurred at a local residence. A woman, accompanied by an adult female friend, confronted an adult female resident of the dwelling. The friend then attacked the resident.

At that point, Levasseur allegedly intervened, brutally assaulting the friend, causing visible contusions, resulting in two black eyes and substantial swelling and bruising to her face, arms and upper body.

Spruce Plains Acting Staff Sergeant Mark Morehouse has asked that any members of the public with knowledge as to the whereabouts of Levasseur contact police immediately. Lavesseur was seen shopping in downtown Neepawa as recently as Saturday, Feb. 2.

Levasseur is described as Indigenous, of average build and height, with numerous tattoos, including two stars on his right hand and two teardrop tattoos on his face below his left eye.

Related to this incident, claims made recently on social media suggesting a mugging that resulted in the theft of “$200 and a cell phone” have been proven false.

From antique furniture to unique creations

A new handmade shop has just opened up in Neepawa, run by some familiar faces at a familiar location. Bead or (K)not Studio is Dennis and Lynne Ranger’s latest endeavour, selling pieces handmade by the two of them, located at their studio, which used to house Two Barns Antiques.

Two Barns Antiques was started by Lynne’s father, originally called Ken’s Antiques, and was taken over by Lynne and her husband Dennis after Ken retired. “We moved to Neepawa in ‘95, with no knowledge of antiques, but an appreciation of old stuff,” Lynne noted. For about 15 years, they bought and sold antiques, with their business being housed at the studio on their home property. “We closed the doors in 2011 due to the market and we needed a change. And we thought we were retiring,” she explained.

‘Retirement doesn’t mean stopping’ However, their creative side had other plans for the Rangers. “Retirement doesn’t mean stopping; I don’t think we’ll ever stop,” Lynne said. “Over the past few years, we’ve been dabbling in other things, looking around. My husband’s been building lamps and tables and statues and all sorts of things out of car parts and old things that we have around. And it looks awesome. He’s developing his talent and letting loose his artistic flair. And I have been refinishing, repurposing items that I’ve found around. And

Drop In Centre to host open house fun day

By Kira Paterson Neepawa Banner & Press The Neepawa District Drop In Centre is hosting a fun day for the February long weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 16, they will have an open house from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Anyone 55 or older is invited to come in and play some games, have a bit of food and enjoy some good company.

Betty Patterson, the Drop In board member who’s been organizing the event, revealed what to expect at the fun day. The day will feature a floor shuffle tournament, with six to eight ends, depending on how many want to play.

For those who don’t want to play f loor shuff le, or

are in between ends, there will be card games, board games, crokinole, pool and table shuffle board. Patterson noted that there will be people there who can explain the games, in case anyone doesn’t know how to play. There will also be a lunch served and a number of draws for lots of prizes, including a 50/50 and a cinnamon heart jar guessing game. The entry fee is $8 per person, which includes the games and lunch.

The open house fun day is a way for the Drop In Centre to showcase some of the games and activities they offer on a regular basis for members. “We’re looking forward to it and I hope we get some new members from it,” Patterson said.

“Two Barns Antiques will be opening at the end of April,” Lynne divulged. “We are opening again with a fresh look.”

For now, the studio will be selling their art and crafting projects two days a week, to start. Currently, the hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Lynne noted that the hours are subject to change, depending on what suits her customers best. More than just jewelry It was Lynne’s love of jewelry making that gave way to the idea of opening up the studio again to sell her pieces. “I had been selling, of course, at craft sales and things. And it just made sense to display my stuff at home,” she noted.

However, as the name suggests, it’s more than just jewelry that they have for sale. “The ‘(k)not’ is the other stuff,” Lynne explained. “My studio is separated into a sewing area, a beading area, I also dabble in painting... [Dennis makes] lamps, little statues and one big statue that’s made out of a [car] transmission; the head is a 1929 Packard headlight.

Not only will they be selling their own artwork, but Lynne said that she hopes to also sell supplies for people to get creative, themselves. “And I’ll probably get into [teaching] some classes now that I’m more familiar with it all,” she added. “But that’s in the works.”

Another service Lynne provides is jewelry repair. “I do jewelry repair for palliative care,” she recited. All of the charges for every repair, minus any expenses, go to Neepawa Palliative Care.

Taine Middleton commits to U of M

Taine Middleton of NACI and Prairie Storm Athletics has signed his USport national letter of intent, accepting an athletic scholarship with the University of Manitoba. Middleton said that he’s excited about continuing to compete in track and field with the U of M. He also saluted Prairie Storm Athletics for teaching him the value of hard work and persistence, as well the skills necessary to perform well under pressure.

The gymnasium at Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute (NACI) was busy this past weekend, with a pair of basketball tournaments on the schedule. The NACI Tigers JV boys and girls squads each hosted eight team tournaments, featuring schools from across the province.

In the boys event, NACI won their first game, defeating the Neelin Spartans 68-28. The next game was a semi-final showdown with Crocus Plains. In that game, the Tigers were bested 58-52. The defeat sent NACI into the third place game, which was against the Swan Valley Tigers. For this game, it was Swan Valley who would claw their way to victory, with a 65-44 result. As for the championship game, it was won by Crocus Plains, who beat the Dauphin Clippers. The final score in that game was not available on the MHSAA website.

JV girls As for the JV girls tournament, NACI was beaten by the Neelin Spartans in the opening game, by the score of 51-4. That defeat sent the Tigers into the consolation bracket. There, they’d defeat Crocus Plains 39-31, but then lose to Swan Valley in the consolation final 62-14.

The Dauphin Clippers ended up winning the weekend, with a 56-51 win over Neelin.

Ticket sales are underway for the Neepawa Natives Junior “A” Hockey Club’s 2019 Cash Lottery.

In a news release issued this week, the club said that the 3 for $250 tickets are almost all sold out. Only 100 3-pacs are offered each year. “That’s the earliest that’s happened,” said Team President Ken Waddell. “There are still a few left. What many buyers do is purchase a 3 for $250 ticket and a 5-pac of 50/50 tickets for $50. NACI Tigers dominant on the ice

The Neepawa Tigers scored early and often in their 8-1 win over the REMP Renegades on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Yellowhead Centre. The Tigers had five goals in the first period, on the way to their 12th win of the Westman High School Hockey League season (WHSHL).

Konur Gork and Wiley Speiss both scored a pair of goals, while Tyler Gibson, Tanner Mann, Owen Wiebe and Ben Rainka added singles on the way to the win.

The Tigers followed up its latest home game with a trip to Swan Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 5. In that game, NACI picked up a 6-2 win. The game stats were unavailable before the Banner & Press publication deadline.

Terriers take a bite out of the Natives Neepawa drops a pair of games in MJHL action

The Neepawa Natives were unable to maintain their early game momentum against the Portage Terriers, falling 6-3 on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Neepawa forward Tom Sweeney scored less than a minute into the game, held at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie. The Terriers scored one of its own a few minutes later, but the Natives regained the lead at the mid-point of the period, on Brad Marshall’s 13th goal of the season.

The Portage Terriers would tie the game early in the second and then take the lead a few minutes later.

Mackenzie Belinski put away his 17th goal of the year with just 2:34 left in the

second, tying the game once again. Portage regained the one goal advantage less than a minute later, taking a 3-2 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

The Terriers ensured its 37th victory with a pair of goals in the third period, making the final score 6-3.

As for Neepawa, this latest loss dropped the teams’ regular season record to 9-31-4-3, good enough for 25 points in the standings.

Road woes in Winkler A pair of goals from forward Brad Marshall

proved to be all the scoring the Neepawa Natives could muster in a 5-2 loss to the Winkler Flyers on Friday, Feb. 1. As seems to be the case a lot lately, Neepawa would score f irst, but then just as quickly surrender one of their own.

That was the c a s e w it h Ma r sha l l’s f irst of the night at the 9:46 mark of the opening period.

Just over two minutes later, Winkler replied. Both teams would add another before the end of the first, making it a 2-2 score.

The second period was a little more one-sided, as the Flyers scored twice, while the Natives’ offence

went cold. Winkler also outshoot Neepawa 10-3 in that middle frame.

The Flyers sealed the win with one more goal in the third, making the final score 5-2.

Flyers goaltender Riley Morgan made 22 saves in the win, while Nik Anderson stopped 36 shots that came his way, but still picked up the loss.

Moving forward This win helps to give Winkler a firmer grasp of the eighth and final playoff spot, with a record of 20-22-4-0. With 44 points, they remain two points up on Waywayseecappo in the standings. As for Neepawa, the team, unfortunately, has last place on lockdown with a 9-32-4-3 record for the year.

The Neepawa Farmers finished the regular season strong, winning their final four games, including a 2-1 victory over the Cartwright Clippers on Saturday, Feb. 2. Garrett Rempel and Daylon Creasy scored for the Farmers, while Brody Mullin notched the only goal for Cartwright.

When you should worry about your child’s back pain

Children are not immune to back pain. According to a review of the epidemiology of low back pain in children in the British Medical Journal, children on average have a 15 to 26 per cent chance of having back pain.

Similar in adults, childhood back pain varies widely, depending on their age, sex and socioeconomic status.

Almost all back pain in children is related to muscle/joint pain and is selflimiting and resolves without complications. There are times, though, when you should pay close attention to your child’s complaints.

Pain for more than a month Prolonged pain is not normal. Children have an amazing ability to heal fast.

If your child hasn’t had a reinjury and still has symptoms that are not healing, you should seek care. Conditions, such as a stress fracture, can be the underlying cause.

The most common type of spinal stress fracture is

called a spondylolysis, an injury to the bone in the back of the spinal column.

This injury occurs most often in adolescents who do sports involving repetitive hyperextension (bending backwards) of the spine, such as gymnasts and divers.

If the stress fracture occurs on both sides of the spinal column, this can cause instability of the spinal column, or a condition called spondylolisthesis.

This condition, also called a spinal “slip,” can lead to the vertebral column alignment to shift.

Prolonged pain can also be a sign that there is a more serious injury to the joints or muscles involving damage to these structures.

Back pain with generalized illness Prolonged back pain with flu-like symptoms, including fever,loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, can be a red flag for infection. Infection of the spine is a very rare, but very serious condition.

Infection of the urinary tract can be another reason for back pain and generalized

illness, as it can mimic back pain and can often be ignored. Children will also complain of stiffness in the back accompanied with a flu or various viral infections.

This pain is self-limiting with the flu symptoms. If the pain and fever persist you should visit your doctor.

Night pain You should be concerned if your child is woken up in the night due to their pain.

This can be a concern if your child hasn’t had a significant injury to their back but is waking up with dull achy pain. The concern is a spinal tumour in this case. Tumours of the spine are very rare, but need to be taken seriously.

Night pain associated with weight loss, pain that isn’t aggravated by movement and loss of appetite all lead to a concern of a spinal tumour.

Back pain and a change in posture Back pain with a change in the posture can indicate an underlying structural problem. The two most common conditions to cause this is Scheuermann’s

Disease and scoliosis.

Scheuermann’s Disease is characterized by a decrease height in the front of the vertebral bodies in the mid back spine, causing an increased forward curve or hump back. It is unknown why it occurs, starts in adolescence and has less than an 8 per cent prevalence in both girls and boys. The condition can cause tension in the entire spine due to the forward positioned change of posture. Some studies show that it can be triggered by a flexion injury, (excessive forward bending), to the mid back.

Scoliosis is again found in adolescence, more common in girls, and you will observe a change in your child’s posture. A low shoulder, a curved spine, a high rib cage on one side when bent forward, can all be an indication of scoliosis.

Scoliosis is rarely painful, but can cause spinal fatigue and chronic back tightness.

Numbness and other symptoms in the arms or legs Arm or leg symptoms in

a child are a good reason to bring your child to a health care provider. The nerves of the cervical (neck) spine travel out of the neck to the arms and the nerves from the lumbar spine travel into the legs. Sometimes these nerves can be aggravated and even impinged by the structures around the spine, including the joints, muscles and more commonly, the discs.

To summarize, be concerned when your child is complaining of constant pain that is not relieved by rest and can’t be reproduced

with movement. Get to the doctor if there is back pain associated with fever or other flu-like symptoms that has your child not eating or being their usual active self. Watch a change in your child’s posture or if they complain of any arm or leg numbness.

Activity fact: The number one cause of back pain in children is due to a weak core musculature due to inactivity. Get out and get active with your kids!

This is supporting our 21st century learning model of creating students that are ready to work in our ever evolving technological world.”

Hilstrom doesn’t plan to stop there “In the near future, I hope to be able to provide a 1 - 1 [student to device] classroom environment for our middle years students, upgrade our staff devices, as well as provide the supports necessary to move our instructional practices to a more student centered environment, where the teachers take a different role in the classroom.”

She also hopes to evolve existing practices, such as accessible/adaptive learning, to offer additional benefits to students.

“I hope that we are able to continue to grow and see student success with the initiatives that we have taken on as a staff. I have so many passionate teachers that support not only me in moving us forward in education, but allow our students to grow and develop into 21st century citizens,” Hilstrom relayed. “My vision would be that we can provide our students with the skills and attributes needed to be successful and continue to see our learning outcome data surpass that of the province in many, if not all, areas.”

In relation to being singled out as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals in 2019, Hilstrom stated her honour,

excitement and thanks. The principal is ever grateful for her supportive family and the SHSC staff for their continuous support, dedication to learning and unwavering commitment to education. Hilstrom hopes that herself and the rest of the staff at Sacred Heart are able to continue to grow and see student success with the initiatives they have taken on as a staff, and continue to bring new ideas to the table.

Beverly Ann Rubachuk 1948 - 2019

Bev was a caregiver to Ron for over 10 years after he had a stroke, until his passing on February 26, 2017.

Bev’s health started to deteriorate about 3 years ago due to COPD. Over the last year, she had to be on oxygen and was in and out of hospitals. She wasn’t able go out much after that, but she loved company; having family, neighbours and friends over for visits, coffee and a card game. Bev’s family was everything to her and she often spoke to her sons in Calgary. The visits she had last summer with her sons, grandchildren and great grandchild, plus time spent with her Mom this last Christmas, were very important to her.

Bev was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, daughter, sister and auntie. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends and leaves to mourn her two sons; Bruce (Ching) Rubachuk and family, Brad (Joanne) Rubachuk and family; mother Irene Pasowisty; brothers Ike (Michele) Pasowisty, Mike (Shelley) Pasowisty; sisters Iris (Richard) Knechtel, Lorrie Pasowisty (Brent Smith), Leona (Scott) McKinna; brothers-in-law Orville Madill, Jim Nagorski, Graeme Radford and Wayne Kinsey; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bev was predeceased by her husband Ron Rubachuk, father John Pasowisty, sisters Sharon Madill, Shirley Pasowisty and Janet Pasowisty, sister-in-law Betty Kinsey and brothers-in-law Andy Rubachuk and Nestor Rubachuk.

As Bev wished, a private family service was held prior to her cremation.

Beverly Ann Rubachuk (nee Pasowisty) suddenly entered into rest at home in Neepawa, Manitoba, on January 14, 2019, at the age of 70 years. Bev was born on September 12, 1948, on the family farm at Elk Ranch, Manitoba; the second of a total of nine children born to John and Irene Pasowisty. She married Ron Rubachuk on June 17, 1967 and resided in Calgary, Alberta. Bev and Ron had two children; Bruce, born on July 23, 1967 (first grandson to Baba) and Brad, born on June 11, 1970. Bev and Ron lived in Calgary, Alberta, for 3 years and then in 1969, they moved to Winnipeg, where they lived for 2 years. In 1971, they moved back to Calgary and lived there for 36 years, until she retired and moved to Neepawa in 2007.

A general knowledge of agriculture practices in Manitoba is required and a post-secondary education in agriculture is an asset.

MASC provides employee training. Work is assigned on a casual basis throughout the year with the main workload from spring until early winter.

Going old school, literally

Neepawa area resident Bill McLaren recently came in to the Banner & Press office to show this old photograph he found.

The picture was taken in 1952, of the class from Union School. The school was located just west of the Langford Winter Park, about eight kilometres east of Neepawa.

The school is still standing today, however it has been moved from its original location. It’s now on a residential property, less than a kilometre down the road from where it was originally built.

Banner & Press Why do painters wear white clothing?

Submitted Metro Creative Connection The sight of professional painters decked out in white overalls is a familiar one to many people. Perhaps you’ve pondered just why painters wear white? The reasons behind painters’ sartorial choices is not easily verifiable, but it’s fun to explore nonetheless.

The actual name for a painting professional’s wardrobe is “painter’s whites.” White canvas or denim pants, white t-shirt, overalls and a white cap are often worn by painters. The idea of wearing white may date back to the 1700s, when there were not a variety of house colors available. As a result, white was the primary choice of

paint at this time. If white paint were to be dripped on a white uniform, it wouldn’t be readily noticed before laundering.

Painters also used to mix 50 pounds of “white lead powder” with a can of paint paste to make about two gallons of paint. The mixing process produced large amounts of white dust. To hide the dust, the painters wore white.

It is also believed that some painters crafted clothing from the white sails of ships.

Another theory behind painters’ preference for white work gear traces its origins to 19th century union painters. Those in the union adopted the allwhite uniform to differentiate themselves from non-

union painters. Sometimes a black bow tie was added to complete the professional presentation.

There are some practical reasons for painters to wear white. White clothing tends to be cooler when working outdoors or in sunny locations. Should painter’s whites become dirty, they’re easily bleachable without the colour fading. Also, white is a pristine color that will present the appearance of cleanliness. Homeowners may readily invite and trust a clean worker into their homes to get the job done.

Painters often find that their business logo stands out sharply against the white of a uniform, which can be another practical reason to don some white overalls.

White clothing also can be

less expensive to replace.

Today, because there are many other paint hues available, painter’s whites may not be so pristine. But those

variously shaded specks and splatters may be indicative of a seasoned professional who has put in many hours on the job.

Painters have long worn white as their unofficial uniform. The theories as to why vary, but the tradition is likely here to stay.

Local Highland dancers participate in Multicultural Festival

By Crystal Scott SUBMITTED Congratulations to all those who participated in the Scottish Pavilion on Saturday, Feb 2. In total, 20 Expressive Dance with Crystal Highland dancers came out to perform during the afternoon show at the Victoria Inn in Brandon.

Dancers travelled from Kelwood, Strathclair, Neepawa, Minnedosa, Clanwilliam, Basswood and Kenton.

Let’s Talk Science inspires young minds

Kids were participating in some scientific activities at the Neepawa Legion on Saturday, Feb. 2 at thisyear’s Let’s Talk Science workshop.

Participants engaged in hands-on crafts (such as making slime), DNA extraction and learning about space. The event was sponsored by the University of Winnipeg, Whitemud Watershed Conservation and the Town of Neepawa.

The University of Winnipeg provided supplies and volunteers (Anna Gavalova, Esther Feoma, Theresa Mackey, Sheena Gurm, Nicole Dorille, Arsh Manghera and Ruth Ewhrudjakpor), parent volunteers assisted and Lindsay McLaughlin, Nepawa’s Director of Recreational Services, aided the operation. Fifty kids were registered for the event. Attendance was capped at that amount for the number of volunteers present.
