Lily Festival folds, new event planned

By Kate Jackman-Atkinson The Neepawa Banner By a 13 to 2 vote, the board of the Neepawa and Area Lily Festival passed a resolution to cease operations last Thursday evening. Despite optimism following a community meeting held in early October, board chair Brent Hunter said that the decision was made due to a lack of volunteers willing to sit on the organizing committee.

Hunter has been involved with the festival since its inception 18 years ago and says about the decision, “It was a rather emotional evening. Once you let it go, it’s probably not going to come back.”

He has previously served as the festival’s chairman and was re-elected to that post at the organization’s annual general meeting, held in November. He explained that despite support from the community at the Oct. 3 community meeting, too few people stepped up to fill key roles.

Past chair Ken Waddell, who served nine terms as festival chair, isn’t happy with the decision. “It’s very sad, I think it’s a bad move for the community,” he said.

Key positions unfilled For those involved in organizing the festival, the announcement isn’t entirely a surprise. “We’ve been saying for a few years, ‘If we don’t get new blood, [the festival] maybe wouldn’t happen,” said Hunter. The festival has always been able to secure the 200 to 300 volunteers needed for the Lily Festival weekend but has struggled recently to fill organizing roles.

The board reached a crisis after this year’s festival; many board members had been involved from the festival’s inception and due to changing priorities or age, wanted to step away. It was hoped that the community meeting would bring forward some new blood and new ideas.

To an extent, the appeal was successful– five new people stepped forward and were elected to the board at the AGM. However, despite the new members, the board was still

looking for volunteers to fill the key positions of vice chairman, marketing chair, sponsorship chair and Lily Development chair.

Waddell said that while the community meeting showed positive support for the festival, some expressed negative feelings towards the event. “As it turned out, people negative towards the festival came onto the board and influenced [the board] to

make the decision to shut it down. Some long-time board members weren’t planning to continue and when faced with the desire by some to shut down the festival, they went along with it because they were tired of carrying the load,” he explained.

Board member Sheri Grant explained that there was no way the festival could continue as it had been. “The cold hard fact is not enough people came out to join the Lily

Festival board to run it in the manner it has been run for 18 years,” she said.

She continued, explaining the decision to cease operations, “As far as I’m concerned, [it was] just a realization that we didn’t have enough people. Time is working against us to do some of things that they have done in the past…

Peace among nations and at home

ormally at Christmas time, an editor might write about the birth of Baby Jesus, the Son of God coming to earth as a baby. It’s usual to point out that Jesus is Our Saviour, come to earth to save mankind from sin and death.

The story is well known, just not well followed.

The Bible, the Word of God, is divided into two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament it says in the book of Jeremiah 31:31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.”

In the New Testament, in Luke 22:20 it says. “In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.’”

The gospel message is summarized in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

That pretty much covers the essence of the gospel message as it applies to individuals. Many millions of people over the past two thousand years have come to find salvation, solace and peace of mind in that simple message.

The Old Testament is largely a history book and at times a very sad and sorry tale of how individuals and nations struggled along trying to do things their own way.

When, upon rare occasion, they followed God’s teachings, they prospered but when they didn’t, as was the most oft-repeated case, they stumbled very badly.

There were lots of battles, death, sin and vengeful retribution in the Old Testament times.

In the New Testament, God’s revealed plan for individuals talks about love, redemption and peace on earth. For millions of people, that message has sunk in, been adopted and is, at least to

So why don’t we have peace on earth?

I believe it’s because nations and some individuals are still living under the Old Testament law. You know, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Everything is a battle, a fight.

Few, if any countries have adopted the New Testament.

Recent allegations of torture conducted by the United States, their armed forces and the CIA show that the U.S.A. is definitely still in the OT mode. Islamic extremist forces are very obviously in OT mode. Until countries get in the NT mode, we will never have peace.

Countries could operate in NT mode. A country needs a strong military to defend its sovereignty against aggression but as has been pointed out recently, torture shouldn’t be part of the operation. Besides, it gains little valuable information and generates a huge amount of hatred and malice. It’s both wrong and counter-productive is so many ways Countries should not be torturing prisoners, should not have a capital punishment policy, should not have even a corporal punishment policy. Countries should treat enemies and prisoners with respect. God knows that a 100 centuries of killing, beating and torturing hasn’t gained us much.

I am no pacifist. If person attacks me, I will defend. If a country attacks mine, I will defend. But

when it comes to us doing that attacking, us doing the torture, the beatings, the executions, I say no way.

Let me give two good examples from WWII. There were many cases of German Prisoners of war being well treated in Canadian POW camps. That message sent the home with a good view of Canada and in some case they stayed or immigrated to Canada.

Today our relationship with Germany is generally positive. By the same token, if Allied prisoners were taken by regular German troops, they were treated a lot better than if the were taken by the German SS troops.

In Matthew 22 we hear Jesus explaining “The Greatest Commandment.” 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

You can’t claim to be a Christian country and initiate attacks and torture prisoners. Until countries figure that out we will never be at peace.

ext summer, the lilies will still bloom in Neepawa, but there will be no festival. Last week, the festival board voted 13 to 2 to cease operations, meaning that there will be no future Lily Festivals in Neepawa.

When I came to town in 2006, the festival had a tense relationship with some residents. I knew of many people who said they went away the weekend of the festival. It wasn’t something they wanted to be a part of, they weren’t MY interested in PERSPECTIVE lilies and they didn’t want to be around when all of the tourists came to ate town.

Over the ackman tkinson years, I have seen much of that sentiment change. In the last eight years, I think the festival has done a good job of expanding its base beyond just lily lovers.

Yes, there is the lily show, but there were also a variety of other activities including entertainers, historical tours, a car show, a parade, dances, an antiques sale and a quilt show. It was possible to have a great time at the festival without ever looking at a lily.

While the board tried different initiatives to expand its appeal, like hosting a large concert, I think the festival had done a good job promoting itself as a family event. On festival Saturday, with the parade and popular children’s activities, everywhere you looked, there were families out enjoying the town.

Even those who weren’t interested in the festival’s activities appreciated its economic impact. Between 5,000 and 6,000 people attended this year’s festival and they all spent some money in the community. Even the out of town vendors spent money, an average of $500, on accommodation, food and fuel. The local retailers and restaurants, the businesses with the most to offer tourists, did a strong trade,which in turn gave them money to spend at other businesses. The festival itself spent about $100,000 with local businesses.

A new event is planned for 2015 that will rise from the Lily Festival’s ashes. It will be put on by a new committee, comprised initially of newer members of the Lily Festival executive, but operating under the umbrella of the Chamber of Commerce. They have some exciting new ideas and they didn’t want confusion from visitors expecting to see a similar festival to ones held in previous years.

I hope the new event is a success, but the end of the Lily Festival will lead to unexpected losses for the community that haven’t been addressed. Neepawa is known as the Lily Capital of the World and the festival is to thank for that. Year-round, the festival was actively promoting Neepawa as a tourist destination, something no other group was or is doing. People around the province knew about Neepawa because of the active promotion done by the festival.

The festival didn’t just make Neepawa the Lily Capital through marketing. Because of the festival, over 2,000 varieties of lilies are grown in Neepawa, many of which are grown in the town’s public beds. It’s expected that all but three will be let go, due to either lack of funds or volunteer burn out, I can’t help but wonder how long those will last. After all, if people aren’t coming en masse to see the lilies, why are we investing in them?

The festival is over and we can’t dwell upon what was or what might have been. The fact remains that not enough people stepped forward to join the festival board, this shows that it was time for a change. That’s fine, 18 years is a long time. Today, with a blank slate, we need to decide what we want for our community and I think the resounding answer should be vibrancy. I loved seeing the town busy on festival weekend. Our businesses need those customers and we want to keep our businesses, yet there was little support from the Chamber of Commerce for the festival. Like the Lily Festival board, the Chamber executive is also facing a shortage of volunteers. Hopefully a new idea will lead to better buy-in.

The Lily Festival may well have run its course but the community benefit of the festival went far beyond the Lily Festival weekend.

My hope is that the end of the festival will serve as a wake up call and not a parable for the community– once, we had something beautiful and vibrant. But not any more.

One day at a time I

will never forget Christmas 2005. After sharing a meal with family in Winnipeg, I made my way to Health Science Centre and checked in with the nurses in the Intensive Care Unit.

In one corner, hooked up to more tubes and monitors than I could ever have imagined, lay a young lady with whom I was deeply in love. Kathryn was resting peacefully after having suffered a massive stroke seven days earlier.

Emergency surgery had saved her life; but no one knew how fully she would recover or what her future held.

ICU was unusually quiet that day, so the nurses said I could go in and sit with her; which I did for over an hour. It would prove to be the most important hour of my life. After about 30 minutes Kathryn woke up, saw me sitting by the bed and gave my hand a squeeze.

In that moment I knew that she would survive and, more importantly, that our relationship would survive this trauma.

After four months in

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein hospital, Kathryn was discharged. She stayed in Sandy Hook with her parents until August 2006, when she returned to Neepawa. We married in 2009 and continue to enjoy life in a home we share with Kathryn’s son and Willow— our canine kid.

We can not speak highly enough of those who worked with Kathryn while she was in Health Science Centre, Seven Oaks Hospital and taking Outpatient therapy at Deer Lodge in Winnipeg. She had to relearn everything—how to walk, talk, write (she was left-handed; the stroke affected her left side) and how to do with one hand the things that other people do with two. I never cease to be amazed at the skills she has learned and continues to learn (although some

days I wonder if I did the right thing in getting her an iPhone and teaching her how to send text messages).

The first two years were tough. We made multiple trips to Winnipeg each week for therapy and additional trips for support group meetings, doctor’s appointments and other tasks. Those trips gave us a chance to learn how to communicate effectively with each other. Thanks to an all-wheel drive vehicle with excellent tires, we completed every trip safely; even though on one occasion (thanks to freezing rain), it took us over three hours to get home from Winnipeg.

In mid-January 2006, on one of my trips into the city, I was handed a box filled with brightly wrapped packages. They were

Letters Christmas gifts with my name on them—gifts that had never been opened. I got some nice clothes and a few other things I needed.

But they paled in comparison to the greatest gift I received that year—a new appreciation for life and the privilege of sharing it with those that I love.

My situation is by no means unique. Kathryn and I frequently meet couples whose stories are similar to ours. We all agree on one thing. Our love is deeper and our lives are fuller and richer than we could ever have imagined they would be. We have learned that, when given the chance, hardships and trials bring out the best in us. We are better people thanks to our experiences.

Our wish for you this Christmas is simple—that you will treasure the life God has given you and make the most of the privilege you have to share it with others. May your homes be filled with peace, love and laughter, and may you be surrounded by people who care.

ost of us catch the meaning of ‘a Charlie Brown’ Christmas tree. We grew up watching the Christmas special and understand that the beauty is in being loved not in how we look!

The Charlie Brown Christmas special is the longest running cartoon special in history– 49 consecutive years!

Back in 1963 Lee Mendelson shot a documentary on Charles Schulz, featuring a clip of Charlie Brown and Snoopy. No one in the industry wanted it. Then in 1965 Peanuts made the cover of Time and an advertising agent for Coca-Cola approached Mendelson asking for a Christmas special. Mendelson was not about to lose the opportunity and said he had one ready to go, rushed back and conspired with Schultz and thus was born the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.

Television executives hated it from the start. The show was: too religious (Linus recites Luke2: 8-14); featured contemporary jazz (not popular with children’s shows); had no laugh track; and used the voices of real children, except for Snoopy. Audiences, however, loved the show and it ranked right up there with Bonanza!

And while some Christians have grown weary of the commercialism and debate about the correct form of holiday greeting, many non-Christians delight in the traditions, legends and decorations. And among us, always, are those individuals lost in the pain of loss, loneliness and the stress of forced joyfulness.

The Neepawa Press cartoon of Dec. 10 promoted the already discredited, ineffective, money-pit long gun registry proposed by the NDP. But goes beyond the bounds of decency when it suggests that the Government of Canada actively seeks the votes of “Yahoo Hunters, Mass Murders, Crazy Anarchists and Radicalized Extremists.”

Not only is this unmitigated, double distilled, male bovine excrement, but in view of the recent murder of troops in Ottawa and Quebec, is in poor taste and insults the intelligence of all Canadians of every political persuasion.

Thumbs up to small town service!

Even though Neepawa is a much larger community than I call home, I find it to be a location ideal to do some family Christmas shopping.

As we fight our way through the Christmas rush, we often forget about the little things that happen in our small to medium communities – like Neepawa that draw customers from a wide area.

For the second year in a row, my wife and I opted to shop Neepawa prior to Christmas.

Same held true in 2013, as I am not a huge fan of hitting big box stores in a city.

This year, items were purchased at four merchants participating in the “Shop Hometown” promotion, as promoted by the Neepawa Banner but not once did we get informed about the promotion or asked if we wished to enter.

Is the promotion simply for folks who call Neepawa home? If it is, then please state that on the full-page advertisement reading, “Shop to Win - Over $6,000 in prizes” next year.

In my eyes a “Shop Hometown Contest” should be deemed as an advertising route to entice local and further afield citizens to visit, not solely local residents. But then, perhaps, Neepawa businesses don’t need or appreciate outside wealth, as they have a funny way of expressing a promotion to community guests.

Oatmeal date scones 1/2 cup large flake oatmeal 1/3 cup butter 1 Tbsp. honey 1 cup buttermilk 1 egg 2 cups flour 1 cup cut up dates (loosely 1 Tbsp. baking powder packed) 1/2 tsp. salt 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon

As of Dec. 12 the water line was being connected for the new Rocky Mountain Equipment building east of Neepawa. The installation was being done by a Rob Smith and Sons crew. Local RME manager Shawn Compton said, “The floor heat is in the new shop area and the building is all sheeted. The concrete work is done and interior walls are starting to go up.” The building is being constructed by Excel Construction.

Compton says they are hoping for a mid-March move in date but he added, “You never know, things come up.”

Currently, RME Neepawa is operating out of the former McLaughlin Chev-Olds building in downtown Neepawa.

Preheat oven to 400°. In a small bowl add the oatmeal and buttermilk. Let soak for 10 minutes.

In another bowl add the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Cut in butter till mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the dates. To the buttermilk add the honey and egg. Mix and add to the flour mix. Stir until a ball forms. Do not over stir. Turn dough onto a lightly greased surface and knead gently five to six times. Pat dough into a 10” circle. With a long knife cut into quarters. Cut each quarter into 3 pieces.

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

The Neepawa & Area 4-H Beef Club’s second meeting was held on Monday, Nov. 3 at the NACI. Our club will be very active in the community, during the month of November and December, showing that the 4-H motto is something that everyone should continue to show throughout their lives no matter their age.

Club met at the Yellowhead Center for the Remembrance Day Service on Tuesday, Nov. 11. We were honoured to participate in the service, and show our respect for those that fought/fight and died for our freedom. After the service, the Legion Ladies put on a lunch for whoever participated in the day’s events.

joined together in creating a papier-mâché cow to put on the float and everyone brought different decorations to finish the float.

Bingo will be heard through the Arden Community Hall, on Dec. 2, 9, and 16; as the Neepawa & Area 4-H members volunteered their time.

By L. J. Rioux Submitted Christmas is just a few weeks away and everyone is preparing – cooking, baking, mailing parcels and Christmas cards, wrapping gifts, rehearsing for concerts, listening to all the lovely Christmas music on the radio, television, ipod or whatever electronic device one has.

But…what are we preparing for? A day, a season, a momentary good feeling when someone opens a gift we’ve given them and we see that they love it?

Or perhaps it’s a family Christmas dinner –delicious foods we save for Christmas But why is so much time, effort and money spent on this time of year?

Two thousand years of seasonal festivals, rituals, Roman Catholic services and in the last few hundred years, Protestant celebrations, have delivered most of what we do. Traditions from many countries in Europe and North America and more distant countries have become part of the Christmas scene.

Our families are so busy that little time is given or even known about the source of all this buying, eating, gifting and receiving.

Parents often work two or three jobs. Children attend many school and athletic activities. Family responsibilities take up much of our thoughts and energy. So we need extra sleep and down time to cope. Many people may not know why we celebrate Christmas.

So here is the story.

It can be read by anyone at anytime – young or old.

It can be read to your children and grandchildren.

It will help your family, or even just you, prepare the way for a real Christmas.

It was a very dark night a long time ago. But something was happening – the world held its breath because a baby was born. A baby you say? What’s so special about that? Babies are born every night.

So true, but this baby was a gift from God. Even more, he was God’s own son. So why would God do this? Because he had seen how badly everyone needed this present.

Over many years, men and women had stopped talking to God and trying to live the way God had taught them.

This caused God great sadness because people were so hurtful to each other. He loves us all so much that He had to do something to make things better.

So the baby was sent and God’s great plan to restore us to Him began.

What a celebration! The angels in heaven came to the skies above the earth and shouted the great good news to some shepherds taking care of their sheep.

Those shepherds were so startled, so afraid that when they saw the explosive light and heard the huge noise of the angels’ voices they cowered on the ground and covered their faces. But the angels reassured them and told them where to find this special baby that God had sent. It was such an exciting mission for them that they left their sheep all by themselves in those fields and ran into Bethlehem to find the baby and worship him. They knew now that this was the king that they had been promised from long ago.

God made another announcement. He put a huge shining star in the sky over the Middle East just so that some wise men would see it, wonder at its appearance and then leave all their homes and follow that star. It was a long trip – they needed to bring supplies and servants in order to cover the distance from Persia to Israel to that small town of Bethlehem. But it was very important for them to go. They knew they were going to meet a king.

So they brought special gifts for him, things that were very expensive and precious at that time. The gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. When the wise men found the baby, they knelt down and worshipped him.

Collateral damage While it’s hopeful that the new festival will be successful in attracting visitors, the loss of the Lily Festival will result in some collateral damage.

Waddell noted that the work done by the festival to promote the community goes beyond the festival weekend. “I think the festival has done a great thing for community identity and creating awareness about Neepawa and what it offers… It has been the only central tourism promotion initiative for many years,” he explained. To date, no group is picking up this role.

The end of the festival will also mean some changes to the town’s landscaping. With the dissolution of the festival, Hunter said that they would likely only keep maintaining the lily gardens at Gertrude Williams Park, Elizabeth Street and the Presbyterian Church. He added that the other beds currently maintained by the festival would likely be let go.

Looking to the future, Hunter said, “It’s history, gone. We will move on… [but] it will be missed.”

HOPE, the school’s global action group, comprised of just over a 100 local youth and the Junior “A” hockey club recently teamed up to collect hundreds of toys for the Neepawa Salvation Army Christmas hamper program. Charges laid in drug seizure RCMP Submitted On Nov. 21, at 7:55 am, RCMP officers executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a residence in Ebb and Flow First Nation, Manitoba. Police seized approximately 16 grams of marihuana, 1 gram of cocaine and more than $6,000 cash along with drug paraphernalia.

Immediately following the Ebb and Flow seizure, two additional search warrants were executed simultaneously in Ste Rose du Lac, where an additional half pound of marihuana was seized along with drug paraphernalia. These seizures are part of an ongoing project RCMP have been investigating since September 2014.

Oil prices spiral in OPEC standoff

Gift shopping, holiday baking, putting up Christmas lights on and around the house and driving to relatives — it becomes a costly season. Retailers do their part to soften the blow with sales like Black Friday moving north across the US border and having an impact here in Canada.

You will have undoubtedly noticed that gas prices have been falling too. Rejoice! It’s not just a few pennies either – when filling my car I see a savings of about $20 per tank. Fuel prices are currently at a five year low.

North America is producing one million barrels of oil per day, quite an impact. However, extracting oil from shale and sand is an incredibly complex and expensive process. With the added cost of fracking the oil out of the sand and shale, fuel prices must remain high to make this a profitable endeavour.

Oil in the Middle East can be pumped from underground reserves, the cost of production is relatively low in comparison. OPEC doesn’t need to sell the oil for as much to still make a profit.

OPEC usually cuts back production of oil to create “shortages” that keep the price at the pumps up in the stratosphere. However due to the North American successes in oil production, they have decided recently to keep on with production. The result is no false shortages in fuel and much lower prices.

On the surface this seems great, however the Grinchyness of it all is that they are using their cheaper to produce oil to thwart North American production.

Despite the fuel prices only having been down for a few weeks, this is having a massive effect on Canadian companies already.

Alberta’s Cenovus Energy has reduced its 2015 budget by 15 per cent over the 2014 budget. Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. have cut dividends by 42 per cent.

Not such a Merry Christmas to those who owe their livelihood to the oil production in Western Canada.

Yellowhead Chiefs ready for home game in Neepawa

The 2014/15 edition of the Yellowhead Chiefs AAA midget boys team will make their one and only appearance at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa on Friday, when they face off against the Eastman Selects

The Yellowhead Chiefs are looking forward to playing in their home away from home, as they’ll host the Eastman Selects at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa on Friday night.

Coach Chad Facey said the Chiefs have accumulated an 11-12-0 record, with eight of those wins coming at home in the friendly confines of the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

Facey noted Yellowhead hopes to keep its home ice advantage going in Neepawa but knows that could be difficult.

“We’re hopeful that the team can acclimate to the rink quickly, but it likely will have a similar feel to a road game. A lot of the kids on the roster have not played on that ice, so it will take some great home support to turn that around,”

said Facey. “We’re optimistic that we’ll have a good solid crowd full of supporters. Some people in Neepawa perhaps haven’t had a chance to see us in action. This is a very exciting group of players to watch and it should be a good night of hockey.”

Forward Logan Young is the lone member of the Chiefs who is from Neepawa. Facey said he’s sure it’ll be nice for him to play a bit closer to home.

As for Yellowhead’s opponent, Facey noted that the Eastman Selects are one of the top teams in the Manitoba AAA Hockey League.

“Eastman is a hard nosed, rugged team. They transition the puck well and put a lot of pressure on their opponents,” said Facey. “We’ll definitely preparing for a hard, physical game.”

Terriers overpower Neepawa Neepawa Farmers lose two at home

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Natives were simply outmatched on Sunday night as they were defeated by the Portage Terriers 9-3. The Terriers started the night off quickly, with forward Shawn Bowles scoring their first goal just 44 seconds into the opening period. Bowles followed that up with a power play marker about five and a half minutes later to make it 2-0. Shortly after that, it was Portage captain Tanner Jago who lit the lamp to give them a comfort-

able 3-0 cushion less than ten minutes into the first period. Neepawa refused to surrender however, as Shawn Pachet notched the Natives’ first goal at 14:52.

Heading into the first intermission, the Terriers led 3-1 and had outshot Neepawa 18-4.

The second period was more of the same, with four goals from the Terriers compared to a single marker for Neepawa. Jordyn Boyd, Matt Alexander, David Robertson and Taylor Friesen all scored in the second for Portage, while it was Drake Lindsay who countered for the Natives.

It was another one sided

period on the shot count, as the home side could just muster five shots on goaltender Justin Laforest.

Reid Stallard on the other hand faced another 18 shots on net, for a two period total of 36.

In the final frame, Garick Gray and Brad Bowles each registered a goal for the visitors, while Shawn Pachet secured his second of the evening for Neepawa while shorthanded to make the final score 9-3. The shots on goal were very much in favour of the Portage Terriers, as they put 50 in total on net compared to just 12 shots for Neepawa.

After the game, Neepawa assistant coach Dustin Howden said the combination of Portage’s remarkable amount of depth, as well as the Natives’ injury woes, played huge factors in the game’s end result.

He did note however that Neepawa never gave up and was not intimidated by the best team in the CJHL. The loss was the fourth straight for the Natives, while Portage won its fifth in a row. Combined with a loss on Saturday night in Virden against the Oil Capitals, Neepawa has now fallen to 10-23-1 on the season.

The comforts of home were not all that comfortable for the Neepawa Farmers last weekend, as the team dropped a pair of games at the Yellowhead Centre in the Tiger Hills Hockey League.

On Friday, Dec. 12, the Farmers hit the ice to face the Gladstone Lakers and were defeated in overtime 5-4.

The game started on a positive note for Neepawa with Lance Nugent and Shane Levandosky scoring in the first period to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Jesse Toth of Gladstone registered the lone goal in the second to cut the Farmers lead in half. In the third period, both teams were able to find their offensive footing as Toth, Trey Evenson and Sean Kubas all scored for Gladstone, while Devin Epp and Clarke Rempel each contributed to the score sheet for the Farmers.

Trey Evenson was able to end things early in overtime with a goal just 33 seconds into the extra frame to make the final 5-4 Gladstone.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Farmers would take on the Souris Elks, one of the top teams in the THHL’s Western Division. Though it was a very evenly contested contest, it was the Elks who would come out on top with a 3-1 victory.

While both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first period, it would be Souris who struck first, early in the second as Jonathan Filewich scored just 24 seconds into the period. Devin Epp countered for the Farmers at 7:28 to tie things up at 1-1, but Ashley Robertson reclaimed the lead for the Elks before the end of the second.

The final period was very competitive with plenty of quality chances for both sides. At 19:59, Troy Kliever secured the victory with an empty net goal for Souris to make the final score 3-1.

With those pair of defeats, the Neepawa Farmers dropped to 7-4-1 on the season, giving the Gladstone Lakers a chance to leapfrog them in the Eastern Division standings, if they were able to win on Saturday night against the Boissevain Border Kings. The Lakers however, found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-2 final. Colt Meloney and Devon Smith scored for Gladstone.

With the loss, Gladstone fell to 7-5-0 on the season and remain tied with Swan Lake for second place in the East with 14 points.

Submitted The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Figure Skating Club celebrated the holiday season with its annual Christmas Ice Show.

The event, held on Friday, Dec. 12 at the Yellowhead Centre, featured a wide variety of skaters, from several different skill levels.

This season there are 23 StarSkaters who skate Wednesdays and Fridays with coaches Donald Naismith, Cynthia Chartrand and Kim Smith. The majority of the StarSkaters used the show as a chance for a full dress rehearsal before their first competition of the season in Virden in January.

The Rising Stars group coached by Kim Smith, has 11 skaters. This group, with the addition of 3 CanSkaters makes up the Beginner 1 Synchro team “Lil’ Ice Prec*Ice” are coached by Cynthia Chartrand and also performed.

The club has two additional synchro teams who are coached by Chartrand and assisted by Kelsey Ellis and Kim Smith. The Elementary Team and the Beginner two synchro teams also strutted their stuff for the first time this season, as they prepare for their first competition in Hazelridge in January.

MJHL Power Ranking: Week 14 1) Portage Terriers (Last Week: 1) Winners of five straight the Portage Terries outscored their opponents 22-6 in three games last week and they remain first on the CJHL Top 20.

2) Winnipeg Blues (Last Week: 3) Two wins in three tries for the Winnipeg Blues recently has the team off to a solid 4-2-0 start to December.

3) Steinbach Pistons (Last Week: 4) Like Winnipeg, the Pistons have also won two of their last three, including a statement victory over Winkler by a score of 7-1.

4) Winkler Flyers (Last Week: 2) A mixed week for Winkler with a shootout win over Dauphin but a big loss to Steinbach. The Flyers have also slipped out of the CJHL Top 20.

5) Virden Oil Capitals (Last Week: 5) A tough start to the week for Virden with a loss to Dauphin, but they bounced back with victories over Winnipeg and Neepawa.

6)Selkirk Steelers (Last Week: 6) The Steelers are tied with Portage for the longest active winning streak in the MJHl, with five in a row. They also have games in hand on everyone else in the league.

7) Swan Valley Stampeders (Last Week: 7) Right in the middle of the MJHL standings are the Swan Valley Stampeders, who recently split a pair of games against Waywayseecappo.

8) Dauphin Kings (Last Week: 8) After two straight wins, the Kings had lost three in a row heading into a home games against Neepawa and OCN. 9) OCN Blizzard (Last Week: 9) Seven points back of Dauphin for eighth in the MJHL standings are the OCN Blizzard.

Two games into an eight games road swing, the Blizard are winless.

10) Waywayseecappo Wolverines (Last Week: 11) There of a possible four points against the Swan Valley Stampeders last week has the Wolverines back in the tenth and final playoff spot.

11) Neepawa Natives (Last Week: 10) Neepawa enters a busy week with a disappointing December so far, with only a single win this month.

Neepawa Tigers play in hockey tournament

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner The Neepawa Tigers recently had the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best high school hockey teams from across Manitoba and northern Ontario. NACI was one of 24 school who

participated in the annual Victoria Inn High School Hockey Tournament, held last weekend in Brandon.

In the round robin portion of the weekend, the Tigers were matched up against the Sturgeon Heights Huskies, based out of Winnipeg and Dryden Collegiate. Neepawa was

able to defeat Sturgeon Heights 3-1 but fell to Dryden 4-2.

In the playoff round, the Tigers were placed in the Royal Oak Division, the first tier consolation bracket. in the first round they beat the Major Pratt Trojans 5-3. The team would then face the Oak

Park Raiders in the semifinals, where they would be defeated 4-3. The final game of the weekend saw NAC”I lose to the Sanford Sabres 5-4.

A team from Fort Frances, Ontario won the weekend event, winning 6-4 over the John Taylor Pipers 6-4 in the finals.

The View From My Chair: Dickensian edition

Media ‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all through my shop, Toys and guitars sat in the light of a Coke machine full of pop, Whilst I sat at my keyboards, both computer and piano, Knowing I wouldn’t sleep until sometime tomorrow; That’s hardly unlike me, ask those who know well, As I’m always this way as the season nears Noel.

It’s way past late at night, and I’ve places to be, Inspired in ways that may only make sense to me.

But yet here I compose, songs and poems and verse, And the occasional column, with the occasional typo to curse.

I s’pose I could write ‘bout the good old hockey game, The home team lost, again, and that’s always a shame.

It was one disappointment, that to some may not even matter, An obstacle faced despite any chance it might shatter.

That both is and isn’t what has me writing tonight, As I’ve always believed in fighting the unwinnable fight.

Perhaps ‘tis the Season, a time of miracles and love, A time when a light shines from yonder above.

Perhaps those are just romantic Capra-esque beliefs of a fool, Mixed with the inferred magic of the timing of Yule.

But maybe, just maybe, there’s some magic left behind, In this world that so often seems uncaring and unkind.

For I heard ‘midst the laughter of children just last night, Some words that brought my sore tired heart much delight.

“Toys, for every kid!”, I heard a young lass decree; “That’s right!” I heard myself say, with George Bailey-styled glee.

For an entire town had brought gifts for children they might not even know, Not for glory, or a story, not for deductions, nor for show.

This wasn’t Bedford Falls, or Whoville, or Victorian London, But a giving of happiness to many a local toyless young ’un.

I’ve heard that our hearts grow three sizes at this time of year, When we share with those in need, as well as those we hold dear.

For each child needs a toy, each family needs their roast beast, As sure as that star shines off in the East.

And like kings of old and Don Quixote, that star, I must follow myself, no matter how hopeless or far.

I’ve only now realized just how truly bless’d, I am for the friends and family who’ve shared in my quest.

For we each must believe in our own Christmas wish, And mine for each of us this year is quite simply this: That those whom you love truly, share the joy that you feel.

Merry Christmas to all, may all your dreams become real.

Obituary Shirley Kathleen Birch Peacefully with her family at her side, Shirley Kathleen Birch passed away on Dec. 8, 2014 at the Brandon General Hospital, at the age of 85.

She was the youngest child of Dunc and Hughena White.

She met Walter Birch and they were married in 1948.

They had a son Brian and two daughters, Linda and Brenda.

They spent their early years farming and then moved into Neepawa, MB, where she worked at Swifts and then in the laundry at East View Lodge until retiring.

She was residing in Elks Manor in Neepawa.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter, her parents, her brother Clarence and sister Helen; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her son Brian (Nancy), daughters Linda (Wayne), Brenda (Arnold) and a special adopted daughter Sharon.

She is also survived by her grandchildren BJ (Diane), Bob (Ashleigh), Bryce (Christina), Lisa (Richard) and Chris (Melissa); great grandchildren Avery, Kelsey, Kennedy, Claire, Hunter, Brenna, Ashley, Mason and Caelin; brother-in-law Doug Birch (Lois) and several special nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held on December 12, 2014, in the Neepawa United Church, Neepawa, MB; with Kristin Wood officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa, MB. Donations may be made to the Neepawa District Palliative Care Service or a charity of choice.

Not-so-happy holidays: managing holiday stress and the holiday blues

By Greg Gibson, Ph.D., C. Psych Registered Psychologist, Prairie Mountain Health In the film, Meet Me in St. Louis, Judy Garland sang the line, “Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light. From now on, our troubles will be out of sight.” Unfortunately, many people struggle with heavy hearts and numerous stressors over the holidays. The term “holiday stress” reflects increased symptoms of anxiety, impatience, fatigue and depressed mood that many people experience over the holiday season. A number of factors tend to contribute to holiday stress, including financial concerns, tight schedules and heavy demands, loss of loved ones, isolation and unrealistic expectations. And when stress is at its peak, it can be very hard to stop and regroup.

Stress cannot always be prevented; however, the following tips can be helpful to manage stressors during the holiday season.

Be aware of your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or if you are away from loved ones, realize that it is normal to feel sadness and grief. It is also important to express your feelings.

Do not try to “force yourself” to be happy just because it is the holiday season.

Have realistic expectations. Too many people expect that the holidays need to be “perfect.” There is no such thing as perfection and having those expectations will only add to the stress of the season.

An asymmetrical tree or an over-cooked

turkey will not ruin your holiday; rather, it will create a family memory. Perennial movie favorites, such as A Christmas Story or A Charlie Brown Christmas are reminders of the endearing qualities of these imperfections.

Stay within your budget. Before you shop for gifts and food, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy happiness with a mountain of gifts. Some alternatives include: giving homemade gifts and starting a family gift exchange. If your children’s wish list exceeds your budget, have a talk with them about reasonable expectations and remind them that the holidays are not about expensive gifts.

Manage your time and set boundaries.

Saying “yes” when you should say “no” can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends and colleagues will understand if you cannot participate in every project or activity. Set priorities and let go of impossible goals. Don’t spend all of your time planning activities for your family. You might end up feeling drained and unappreciated. Take the time you need to finish tasks that are important to you. Don’t try to complete everything at once and ask others to help you complete chores.

Keep healthy and take time for yourself. All too often, when people feel stressed-out and overwhelmed, they forget about their self-care. Also, the holiday season is ripe with opportunities to overindulge. Make sure that you are eating regularly and healthily, that you are getting a decent night’s sleep and that you are getting enough physical activity into your day. This can be difficult when the weather turns cold. Finally, pace yourself. Give yourself opportunities to rest and replenish. By slowing down, you will have more energy to accomplish your goals.

Do something for others. By volunteering or assisting others, we can get out of our experience for awhile. Helping out at a food bank, or a shelter can also provide us with some perspective in terms of our worries and concerns.

Stay connected and seek support.

When we feel sad or overburdened, we often isolate or avoid others that can add to our burden. Ensure that you are connected with others, and seek support if needed. Getting things out in the open can help you manage your feelings and find solutions for your stress. If you continue to feel overwhelmed, consider seeing a professional such as a mental health counsellor to help you manage your holiday stress. Bill C-48 a big topic at KAP meetings

By Eoin Devereux The Neepawa Banner Farmers from across the province have voiced their thoughts during Keystone Agricultural Producers’ district meetings. One of the group’s annual gatherings was recently held in Neepawa and saw a wide array of resolutions discussed.

KAP vice president Dan Mazier said this type of deliberations really forms the working plan for their organization going forward.

“The purpose of the meetings is to report what we’ve been working on in the last year. Engage with the membership on a face to face basis. To get their perspective on pertinent issues because that’s where our policy is formed,” said Mazier. “We talked about everything from water to the environment. Safety, transportation, changes in government policy.”

KAP president Doug Chorney said one of the other issues that was on everyone’s minds was Bill C-48, the modernization of Canada’s grain industry act. The Act, introduced in the House of Commons last week, establishes the authority for the Canadian Grain Commission to administer a producer compensation fund. This will provide a safeguard for farmers if a licensed grain buyer doesn’t pay for a delivery.

These gingerbread waffles could become a new Christmas morning tradition!

Gingerbread waffles or pancakes 2 cups flour 3 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 3 tsp. ground ginger 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. cloves 1/2 cup molasses 2 eggs beaten 1/4 cup oil 1 1/2 cup milk Combine flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Mix together the remaining ingredients. Stir into dry ingredients. Add more milk if batter is too thick.

For waffles cook in waffle iron or for pancakes cook on a grill until golden brown.

Serve with apple sauce and whipped cream or syrup as usual.

Frozen cranberry salad 1/2-250 g package of 1-398 ml can crushed cream cheese pineapple, well drained 1-348 ml can whole cran- 1/2 cup of chopped berry sauce pecans 1 500 ml of Cool Whip Soften cream cheese to room temperature. Add 3 Tbsp. of the whipped topping and beat to combine. Add remaining whipped topping. Add the cranberries, drained pineapple and the pecans and stir in. Spoon into a washed and dried 1 litre milk carton. Freeze. When ready to serve put on a plate and slice.

Onion curry tarts 1 Tbsp. oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 medium onions, quartered and sliced 1 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. curry powder 1 tsp. roasted ground coriander 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 1 Tbsp. flour 1 cup cream 2 eggs 1 cup grated Cheddar 20 unbaked tart shells In a fry pan heat the oil and sauté the garlic and onions for several minutes. Add the spices to the onions. Whisk the flour, cream and eggs together, then add to the onion mix. Fold in the cheese and fill the tart shells.

Bake in 350° oven for 20-25 minutes or until set in the middle and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Out of Helen’s Kitchen: Sesame stars Serve with dips, soups or salads, these tiny morsels make a tasty holiday treat.

Sesame stars 1 cup flour 3 Tbsp. sesame seeds 3 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. pepper 3 Tbsp. butter 1/4 cup plus cold water extra sesame seeds metal star cookie cutter In a bowl combine flour, seeds, cheese, salt, baking soda and pepper. Work in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add 1/4 cup water and stir to make a ball. Add more water a little at a time if needed.

On a lightly floured surface roll out till it is 1/8” thick.

Add a few more sesame seeds on top and press down. Cut out with cutter. Shape left over dough into a ball; add a wee bit of water if needed and roll and cut out again.

Bake on ungreased sheets at 350° for 12 minutes or until golden and crisp.

Out of Helen’s Kitchen: Lemon cranberry squares The sweet chewy coconut and dried cranberries is set off perfectly with the lemony filling and they are enticingly simple to make!

Lemon cranberry squares Base: Topping: 1/2 cup butter 2 eggs 1/3 cup icing sugar 1/3 cup white sugar 1 cup flour 1 pkg. lemon pie filling(not instant) 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 cup dried cranberries 1 1/2 cup flaked coconut Icing sugar for sprinkling Cream butter and icing sugar together. Add the flour and mix well. Press into an 8x8” lightly greased pan. Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes until very lightly browned. While base is baking beat the eggs well.

Beat in the sugar. Blend in the dry lemon pie mix and baking powder. Fold in the cranberries and coconut. Spread over hot base and return to oven.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until set in the middle. Cool.

Sprinkle with icing sugar. Cut into bars.

Thimble cookies 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 egg white shredded coconut raspberry jam Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg yolk and vanilla and beat well. Add the salt to the flour and add to the creamed mix and beat until blended. Beat egg white lightly. Form dough into small balls, dip each ball into egg white, then into coconut mixture. Place each ball onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Make an indent with a thimble on your finger or the end of

Out of Helen’s Kitchen: Raisin cinnamon swirl bread Wonderful smells will fill your home when you bake this bread.

Raisin cinnamon swirl bread 3/4 cup warm water 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 1/2 Tbsp. active dry yeast 1 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup butter 2 eggs 1 1/2 tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. sugar 2 cups raisins 1/2 cup sugar 1 Tbsp. cinnamon 1/4 cup melted butter Cover raisins in boiling water and let soak to plump them.

In a small bowl put the first 3 ingredients, stir and set aside in a warm place. In a small pan heat milk and butter just until butter melts. Add the eggs, salt and sugar and mix.

Add the yeast mix and milk mix into electric mixer with dough hooks and beat in flour 1 cup at a time until soft dough forms. Beat 7-8 minutes. Add the drained raisins.

Turn out onto floured surface and knead into a ball. Turn into a greased bowl. Turn dough to grease top, cover with a clean tea towel and let rise until double in bulk about 1 hour. Combine sugar and cinnamon. Divide dough into 3 balls. Roll each ball out into a 8x12” triangle, brush lightly with melted butter and sprinkle on 1/3 of the cinnamon mix. Beginning at 8” end, roll up as for jelly roll. Seal ends of loaf and place into lightly greased loaf pans. Cover and let rise about 1 hour. Bake in a preheated 350⁰ oven for 30-35 minutes or until bread is browned and sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from pans and let cool on racks.

Out of Helen’s Kitchen: Peanut brittle This peanut brittle should be kept hidden until you are ready to serve it!

Peanut brittle 1/2 cup peanut butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup corn syrup 2 Tbsp. water 1 1/2 cups unsalted peanuts 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla

May you and your family enjoy the many blessings that give true meaning to the holiday season.

Melt peanut butter in a small double boiler. Once melted, leave in the hot water to remain liquefied.

Mix the baking soda and vanilla together. Set aside.

Put the sugar, corn syrup and water in a heavy bottomed pot and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, using a wooden spoon. Add the nuts and butter and return to a boil stirring constantly. Insert a candy thermometer that has been placed in hot water before putting it in the candy mixture. Boil until temperature reaches 280°.

If you do not have a candy thermometer use a cold water test. Into a glass of cold water drop about 1/2 tsp. of the candy mix. It is at the right temperature if it separates into threads that are hard but not brittle. It is so much easier to use a thermometer! To reach this temp, it will take 18-20 minutes or more.

When temperature registers 280°, remove from heat and stir in the peanut butter. Add the baking soda mix. Quickly roll out peanut brittle with greased rolling pin on a greased cookie sheet. Cool for 1 hour or more and break into pieces. Store in a tightly covered container. Hide the container.

This moist chocolatey cherry filled brownie will satisfy your craving for a sweet ending to a meal or serve with afternoon tea company. It will be hard to resist just one!

Black forest brownies 1 cup butter 3/4 cup cocoa 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. cherry flavoring 1 1/3 cup flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cup drained maraschino cherries 1/2 cup slivered almonds if desired Icing: 3 Tbsp. butter 1/4 cup cocoa 2 Tbsp. cherry juice (from the jar of cherries)

2 cups icing sugar cherries to decorate if desired

Add the cherries and nuts. Spread in a lightly greased 9x13” pan and bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until set in the middle. Do not over bake.

While brownie is baking make the icing by beating the butter, cocoa, cherry juice and icing sugar together.

Cool brownies in the pan then ice. Decorate with extra cherries if desired.

Out of Helen’s Kitchen: Grandma’s raisin pie

This is one of grandma’s specialties that stood the test of time. It will bring you back to your childhood visits to grandmas.

This recipe will fill a large Pyrex pie plate.

Grandma’s raisin pie 3 cups raisins 3 1/2 cups water 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 3 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 Tbsp. butter 1 tsp. vanilla prepared pie pastry In a pot combine the raisins and water. Bring to a boil, turn down and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add the sugar and salt.

Add the cornstarch to the lemon juice and stir well. Add the mix to the raisins, stirring all the while. Simmer over medium heat until bubbly and thickened, about 5 minutes. Add the butter and vanilla.

Turn into prepared pie crust.

Make a topping crust of desired design. Traditionally it is a woven lattice topping made with strips of pie dough.

Bake at 350° for 50-60 minutes or until crust is golden and filling is bubbling.
