We will depart the port with a short journey along the beautiful Taranto seafront "Lungomare" before arriving to commence our walking tour. Taranto was a once Greek-spartan then Roman colony. Known as "the city of the two seas" it has two distinct parts, a small artificial island protecting a lagoon (the Mar Piccolo) and the newer modern side of the city (Mar Grande), resulting in a diversity of architectural styles.

Starting in the old town we will take in the Cattedrale di San Cataldo, which dates back to the 11th century and is considered the oldest in Puglia. The façade of the cathedral is baroque and inside is home to a wonderful mosaic floor. A nice stroll on via Duomo leads to the Doric temple of Poseidon placed in Piazza Castello, It is the oldest temple in ""greater Greece"" and the only Greek religious structure still visible in the old town, whilst in this area we will also visit the Aragonese castle built by King Ferdinand of Aragon in the 15th century and now under the protection of the Italian Navy.

From here we will make our way to the newer part of town (Mar Grande) for a short period before our last stop visiting the Archaeological Museum Marta with the jewelry and the marvelous mosaic floors belonging to Roman Villas, along with many other Greek and Roman artifacts.

After the visit we will rejoin the coach and head back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.

We will depart the port and transfer to Matera, one of the most unique, interesting, unusual and memorable destinations in Italy, famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, the Sassi, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Matera starred as Jerusalem in Mel Gibson’s "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004 and was home to the recent filming of the Bond movie "No Time To Die" Upon arrival in Matera we will take in the stunning view across the Sassi described as one of the most unique landscapes in Europe. The tour will then continue down through the narrow streets where we will admire pale limestone churches, monasteries, palaces and houses, tiny courtyards adorned with flower pots, all amazingly carved in to the rock and balanced on the edge of a ravine.

The last part of our tour will visit "Casa Grotta" a typical example of the ancient dwellings of Matera, preserved as a museum, complete with fixtures, fittings and model livestock. A fantastic opportunity to see the layout of a once inhabited cave where an entire family (on average six members) including their animals lived.

You will then be taken back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.

On departing the port we will drive along the Salento peninsula, home to pretty white washed towns and fields of olive trees, arriving in Lecce the starting point for our walking tour. Lecce is the main city on the Salentine peninsula and is over 2000 years old, steeped in baroque architecture it is commonly nicknamed "The Florence of the South".

We will enter the town through Porta Napoli the main city gate to the ancient city, walking a few yards we will reach The Basilica di Santa Croce - whose baroque façade is as exuberant as its large Renaissance interior is austere. As we continue through the quiet streets of the old town, beneath delicate wroughtiron balustrades, curving white-washed arches and soft amber street lamps we will arrive at the wonderful Piazza del Duomo, the square is completely enclosed on three sides and is home to Duomo of Lecce, the Bell tower, the Bishop’s Palace and the Seminary Palace.

The Duomo of Lecce, is the city’s cathedral originally built in 1144 and restored in the Baroque style in 1659 by the architect Giuseppe Zimbalo.

The Bishop's palace is the current day residence of the Archbishop of Lecce and The Seminary Palace houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art After our time here we will rejoin the coach and head back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.
