Chicago is portrayed as a diverse city, especially in downtown Chicago. However, Chicago is, in fact, a segregated city. On the Northside of Chicago, the population is predominantly white, while on the South and West Side the population is made up of Hispanics and African Americans. To begin, living on the South and West Sides, someone is more likely to eat unhealthily. For example, on the Northside someone will be able to find grocery stores that have organic food, unlike on the South Side, where stores that sell organic food are limited; this difference represents health disparities. Health disparities can be defined as different people in certain neighborhoods do not get the same health benefits as other neighborhoods. The biggest threat to social justice in Chicago are health disparities, especially in the South and West Sides of town because people who are living there are more prone to diseases, people are prevented from eating healthily, and they are prevented from getting simple exercise. Health disparities are not based on income but on location. In Chicago, health disparities are a major problem because of segregation. While, on the Northside, someone is less likely to experience health disparities, it's different on the South and West Sides. When someone looks at a map, they do not see how segregated a city is, but when someone is analyzing a certain neighborhood in Chicago, they will be able to see how segregated the city is. A study shows how neighborhoods in

Breathe in. Breathe out. Take in the air, the bite of the wind, rush of cars and gaze up at the skyscrapers above. For some, Chicago is just another location, a point on the map, but for me it has a special place in my heart, due to the weather, its stunning beauty and the way it gives me a sense of belonging. Beginning, my memories of Chicago are tied to one specific yet beautiful time I went to Grant's Park in the spring. The first element that made this trip truly amazing was the weather. Of course, it is a simple thing, but such a simple thing as the type of day it was really had an impact on me. The day started cold, the brisk wind biting my lips, making me sink deeper into my jacket. The metal of the handrail on the bridge stung my fingers as the wind whispered into my ears. It seemed to be what one...show more content...

All of Chicago is magical, but this part of the city, nature and the architecture. The natural beauty harmonizes perfectly with the buildings. Being there, you get a sense of the warmth that radiates off everything. When being there, I am able to spend time with my family and enjoy being in a place with so much inspiration. Walking down the sidewalk, I felt the rush of the cars by me, the calls of birds flying overhead and I witnessed so many people doing so many different amazing things, and It made me see how a single place can be defined by so many individually amazing features. Overall, even though these are just little things, it is the type of day, the the places I went in the city, and its sheer beauty that truly made Grant's Park area in Chicago such an amazing place where I was able to see and experience so many wondrous things. This made that day memorable for me, and it will always have a special place in my

Descriptive Essay Chicago

In Carl Sandburg's poem "Chicago" he describes the positive and negative attributes of the city such as: the thriving industry and the hardworking people as the positive and crime and murder as the negative. "Chicago" is a short poem , however, the poem conveys many emotions about the city. Even though Chicago has many negative connotations to its name Carl Sandburg tries to express his love for the great city. By using repetition, personification, and apostrophe Carl Sandburg explains why he loves Chicago. One of the major literary devices that Sandburg uses throughout the poem is repetition. Repetition is used in this poem to show the importance of words or phrases throughout the entirety of the poem to convey the message. The phrase "They...show more content...

Apostrophe is the speaker of the poem addressing someone, something, or an idea which is not present. Apostrophe is used in the line "And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger" (line 9). In this line Sandburg uses apostrophe to show what someone else from Chicago has seen about the city , but not experienced themselves. This line is about talking to someone that looks down upon Chicago and the people and activities that go on inside it. In the lines "Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning" (line 10) Sandburg uses apostrophe to show the pride that he has about his city. He also shows that the people in Chicago have a certain drive to be successful and the people that are in it are outgoing and happy to be

The outdoors of Poland can be strongly contrasted to the outside of Chicago. Towns can be very big, yet many places are little. Cars drive around a lot near the bigger cities, but in some there are very little cars that drive by. At first, it can be very loud and then it can become very calm and quiet. People are usually working during the day at the farm, in the fields or in the city. Children that are old enough go to school and come back later in the afternoon. However, Chicago is constantly busy and loud. It is very common to get stuck in traffic, meanwhile cars keep honking at each other. Often, people prefer to take a train or to walk to their destination. This way they can get around the traffic and get to their location on

it was a day like any other with no compelling attributes, except for the gentle breeze that was blowing through the city of Chicago as Anna Ortiz made her way towards the Chicago River. it was a particular gorgeous Wednesday evening in early October, just cool enough to know fall had arrived. The bright green leaves had started to fade as if by magic into Splendid red, yellow and orange shades thus creating a backdrop of tranquility and serenity in the downtown area. Anna walked subdued by the beauty of the city as everyone seemed to rush passed her. Analysis Of Chicago

Walking up to the door, we took in the scenery of a family of four sitting at a dark, brown circular table, hanging out as if this was the place to be. As soon as we walked in the door, the mouth watering smell of sweet, burning, crispy bacon and pepperoni enticed me. We hadn't eaten all day and this was our first time in this particular place. I knew this experience would be great when I saw just how many people it attracted. It attracted people of many backgrounds and of many ages. I realized we stood out when Dennis (the pizzaiolo) saw that it must've been our first time. He informed us of how things worked; how the pizzas were individually crafted and made from the interpretation of various cities, how you could make your own pizza...show more content...

Every table appeared free of crumbs and sauce stains as they sat shining under the fluorescent lights.

Opening the box of pizza we saw that it was unbelievably thin. When I picked up my slice, the cheese was gooey and hot. I like that the food was fire cooked right in front of our faces so we didn't have to worry about where our food has been when we finally got it. The toppings started to spill off as I took my first bite. The pizza was mind–blowing. I had never tasted anything so savory. When we were full we still didn't want to stop eating (it was that good). One box just wasn't enough, we needed more. When we got down to our last slices of pizza we realized that we were, in fact, full.

As we sat in the booth, more people walked into the doors looking as if they've been there a thousand times before, so eager; knowing exactly what they would be ordering. Then there was the people like Darell and I, who supposedly looked like lost puppies; unaware of what they were going to get off of the menu; unaware of the delicious pizza they were about to receive. Seeing all of the people from different walks of life, so excited to eat this pizza was great.

Although the slices were only big enough to feed a five year old, it was oddly satisfying and just enough to fill us up. The pizza looked exactly as it did on the menu. The employees' customer service was way over the top. They made sure that we were contented with our choice and always had a smile

The main building of the Art Institute is constructed mostly of masonry, with few windows, and feels very heavy and overpowering. Grand staircases and large columns dwarf visitors as they move through the galleries. This is similar to the way the art in the space makes you feel: small, unimportant, and sometimes even afraid. The Modern wing in constructed of steel and glass, and is very open and bright (except when intended not to be). The large north wall facing Millenium Park is one large expanse of windows, letting in plenty of indirect sunlight, and opening the gallery to the park. The space feels very light, in both senses of the word. As with the old building, the art feels similar to the space in that it is more open and less opressive. The two buildings also differ in the way they interact with the city, since they have vastly differing neighbors. The main building is centered on Adams street and faces the Loop, the busiest area of the city. Flanking the main entrance are two large, bronze, lions that seem to protect the building from the city, while still allowing visitors to enter and exit the museum. The new Modern Wing, however, facesChicago's Millenium Park. The face of the building along the park side is a large face of windows. So, while the old building is trying to shut out the city to create a space for itself, the Modern Wing is opening itself up to let the park

The Chicago Blues, A Style Of Blues

Chicago Blues

The Chicago blues was a style of blues that developed, as the name suggests, in Chicago. It was a more modern type of blues and came about after the Great Migration of the 1900s. More than half a million African Americans migrated from the Mississippi Delta and headed north, towards cities like Chicago and Detroit (Public Broadcasting Service, 2015).

The Great Migration was a mass migration of African Americans from the south to northern states, as stated earlier. They moved in search of jobs in the more industrial sector of the United States and took the culture of blues music in the Mississippi Delta with them (About.com, 2015). The migrants evolved the Delta Blues style and turned it into Chicago blues by taking the guitar...show more content... (2015). Chicago Blues Style, Characteristics and Artists. Chicago Neighborhood Analysis

Chicago neighborhoods are different but closely similar to style and layout. It's a diverse city with areas that have different atmospheres with parks, restaurants, etc. I want to focus more on 'rich' and 'poor' and 'middle' as a whole. The people would be the main source with the part of living standards about the neighborhood I'm from. This would give a better understanding of how exactly the area is.

Rich is vague term because no one can be rich easily become one than the other. People are usually the same in terms of where they're currently living. Lincoln Park is northeast of downtown Chicago, very active much like the rest of downtown. The neighborhood is a pack of expensive restaurants, stores and the park itself. The area is an array of houses at every corner. People get up to work very early morning and it's a hassle. It is not a popular area in Chicago but it is one of the more pack traffic streets. The restaurants such as Golden Village, as for example, is affordable to everyone. Thefood is not as costly and you pick meal as cheap as 5 to 8 dollars. Another place would be a flea market which is a couple of streets away from Central Park. Different type of stations for food, clothing, and games, and accessories. It's popular among the Mexican community for its price and waves of varieties in the market. Clothing is not as expensive but still affordable with Nike, Adidas, and North Face. For renting, it about 600 to 800 dollars depending on the amount of space you'll need and the location. One thing to know is that most people are rather struggling with money because of the large amount trying to have a job. Downtown is the same but not a tremendous like here in Central Park.

Does it matter where in Chicago that someone might live? Well, yes and no because it mostly does depend on your taste and your financial situation. I would recommend not living Downtown but in the Hermosa area. You can live peacefully and Jobs wouldn't be difficult. The neighborhoods I mention have other places that could meet your

Short Essay On Chicago

Although Chicago is a wonderful town with soaring skylines, diverse restaurants, and amazing culture, much of America tends to overlook the Midwestern metropolis. So, the city talks itself up and creates folklore through its history and numerous nicknames, like the second city or the city of big shoulders. But, those legends can cloak its past and self–awareness in a fog of immense pride. The city of Chicago wants the world to see their history as a founding by great men, who overcame adversity through inspired ideas. However, this boosted narrative hides the innate conflict of the town's beginning and glosses over the laborers' maltreatment through the myth of the hustling working man. When remembering the founding, the Chicago government and historical...show more content...

For example, on historical sculptures bordering the Chicago River, the city carved many explorers' and traders' names into eternal bronze, even dedicating one of the four biographical monuments to solely Marquette and Joliet, the French Fur Traders who stumbled upon the future site of the city. In an attempt to rival sophisticated New York, Chicago boosts its originators to the status of the eastern founding fathers. Still, many historians seem to diminish the life of Baptiste Pointe De Sable, the first permanent resident and a man of Haitian decent, because they do not want a black founder tainting their new set of colonial elite. The city just recently built a De Sable plaque and bust near the bridge, but Joliet and Marquette's dedication dwarfs his. Similarly, the Chicago History Museum also emphasizes great men with a painting of Marquette and Joliet as the largest artifact, also almost completely ignoring De Sable and the workers. Although these individuals did have a large impact on Chicago's fast growth, this great man history ignores the real workers who physically built the town. During this time, Kander was cut off and not allowed to be around other people, that separation developed his ability for sound. Kander started piano lessons at the age of six. The show was Velma's and her sister's act before Velma killed her sister. Roxie turns Velma down only then to find out that someone else had committed a crime. Roxie's only chance at fame again was to pretend to faint and to pretend that she is pregnant, thus concluding Act 1. ("Full Script Lyrics")

The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily the media can be persuaded by giving lies to the public. The play is trying to tell the reader that in this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today.

Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie thinks that she is calling all the shots now because she came up with the idea of being pregnant to get her back on the publicity train. Roxie then fires Billy thinking she can do everything on her own, later to realize that a woman was executed without a lawyer. Roxie then freaks out and calls Billy to have him be her lawyer again. When the trial date comes, Billy tells Roxie that if she puts on a show she will be fine. During court Roxie acts innocent while Billy does all the talking. The judge proclaims

Judy Chicago (artist, author, feminist and educator) has a career that now spans five decades. In the late 1960s, her inquiry into the history of women began a result of her desire to expose the truth of women's experiences, both past and present. She still continues on a crusade to change the perception of women from our history, "Women's history and women's art need to become part of our cultural and intellectual heritage." (Chicago, 2011) Through our history women– their struggles, accomplishments and contribution to history, have been overlooked, downplayed and even completely written out of a male dominated society and culture. In anthropologist Sherry Ortner's 1974 essay "Is Female to Male as Nature Is to Culture?" she supports this view, writing "...woman is being identified with–or, if you will, seems to be a symbol of–something that every culture devalues," (Ortner, 1974) Where Mendieta's work primarily came from a striving to belong and an understanding of where she came from, I feel that Chicago's aim was to find a place for all women, past and present in this world, starting with herself in the art world. Chicago did explore her peronal heritage in later works entitled 'Birth Project' and 'Holocaust Project'.

Chicago's early work's contained strong female imagery, which triggered much criticism from a male professor for producing images that were too "womb and breast like" whilst in graduate school. These early works, such as 'Mother Superette' (See Fig 14) were later to become her studies for 'The Dinner Party'. She responded to this criticism by...show more content... The protestant reformation began in the 16th century. This reformation was seen as a counter to the religious authoritative rules set in place by society. Many citizens saw it as a disrespectful threat to the society as a whole, but as the protest began to increase , several people would rise in fame in Europe. The creation of a new Christianity branch of faith would produce a new theology and philosophy within Christianity. The church was forced to defend themselves, using the Counter Reformation. The Reformation had three parts : Lutheran, Reformed and English. There are many influences that impacted the Protestant Reformation that will be discussed in the following. The first major person was Martin Luther. Luther spent most of his younger years being a monk and scholar. During that time the church was practicing the sale of "indulgences" to absolve sin. Due to that corrupt practicing of Christianity, Luther decided to write the "95 Theses" that was published on October 31, 1517.

The "95 Theses" contained some of the following main points:

So let's just face it and try to help ourselves get it right. And to do so a lot of what you write, its credibility and the fact whether it's intended reader or audience is convinced by your findings or not depends to large extent on how you write it , not what it says. That may sound disappointing to many people because to them the content is important but to the readers it's presentation reflects its authenticity. Effects of Globalization on Chicago and the Resulting Changes in School Structure

Globalization is a term that is often used without realizing the full effect that it can have on the economy, both globally and locally. With globalization often come neoliberal policies, which Lipman says has two parts. Generally, neoliberalism is thought of as laissez–faire policies and the decreasing of the size of the public sector and increasing the size of the private sector. Lipman splits this into two parts – roll back and roll out neoliberalism. Roll back neoliberalism involves the destruction of Keynesian artifacts, policies, agreements, and institutions and roll out neoliberalism creates new practices and institutions or reconstructs existing ones (Lipman 2009). In Chicago, they are implementing both ends of Lipman's neoliberal ideas. The size of Chicago 's middle class is decreasing at a very quick rate is because "globalization makes American technology, finance, and resources more valuable, and individuals producing and managing those enjoy soaring incomes. But free trade pits ordinary American office and factory workers against legions of capable Chinese and others, and destroys jobs without creating enough new opportunities in exporting activities" (Morici 2012). Additionally, they are attempting to implement neoliberal ideals in schooling through initiatives such as Renaissance 2010, an effort to close public schools and open private charter

Chicago: All That Jazz

The stage performance of Chicago offered a spectacle that I expected before attending the show. I knew there was going to be scantly clad girls with dark makeup and saucy attitudes. The performers brought to life all that was raunchy in the entertainment business during the roaring twenties. The lifestyle in Chicago featured jazz, booze, sex and crime. More importantly, Chicago had beautiful, young women with the dream of having their own Vaudevilleact. The two main female characters, Velma and Roxy were two such women hoping to capture the public's attention. The composition of the show is a metaphoric integration of Vaudeville type acts amongst the book scenes and diegetic musical numbers.

In Vaudeville shows there is no book or story plot as opposed to musical theatre. There may be a common theme between the acts but there is no formal plot. Also in Vaudeville there is change of content between shows. Depending on popularity of the performer an act can be cut or added. In contrast musical theatre productions are final cuts in terms of the content of the show. The addition of Vaudeville acts into the show brings about the purpose of the show. Sassy entertainment!

In Chicago, the main plot revolves around women who murder the men in their lives that have caused some injustice. Each woman has a story to justify the reason why the men had to die. Billy Flynn is a charismatic criminal lawyer that has never lost a case for a female client. The proceedings in jail and in the courtroom are anything but legal and ethical. It is clear that the plot is not serious. This justifies the fact that the female prison inmates are allowed to interact with each other in song and dance. Also the so–called warden can also act as a contract agent to get the girls their own Vaudeville act. The main purpose of the show is to water down the book plot and add individual entertainers. This is done to integrate the Vaudeville quality within a musical. In doing so the courtroom and jail is paralleled with a nightclub scene. The main purpose to maintain the Vaudeville quality is suggesting the cliché "all the world's a stage." In

Gun violence is a major problem in Chicago. There has been an estimate of nearly six hundred shooting victims in a matter of three months into the New Year. It is very sad how so many innocent people lose their lives due to such violence. Even the safest neighborhoods have become dangerous because of ignorant gang members who settle their problems with rival gangs by shooting each other. It is hard to feel safe in a community where you fear being at the wrong place at the wrong time. There are hundreds of gangs all over Chicago. The gun laws in Chicago must not be strict because there are so many people that have guns illegally and use them for illegal activity. Guns are meant for protection in case a person needs to defend themselves, but many people use them for other things, such as gang shoot outs. Real people are affected by illegal gun violence every day. Some people fail to realize that these people that are losing their lives are someone's child, parent, and friend.. People do not understand that instead of questioning why we have this issue, we should try to figure out how to change it. If no one is trying to make a change and put a stop to illegal gun violence, people will continue to lose their lives. Most of the homicides in Chicago are due to illegal gun violence. This is a very sad issue that is glorified in the music that many of us listen to. Our radio stations give announcements on stopping the gun violence, yet they play songs where the artist speaks about it as if it were a good thing. Of course music is made for entertainment, and I'll be the first to admit that I myself listen to music that promotes violence, but there are plenty of little kids that also listen to that type of music and think that violence is Get more content

However, when Amos came to Billy office he was short and Billy told him he could not take his wife's case, but just as Amos was walking out of his office, Billy had a change of heart and took Roxie's case. Billy loved to get the case that would make big news. Billy also loved any opportunity to get his face in front of the media, more than he loved assisting his client. Billy was smart to know if he wins his case, the media attention will make him more famous. Lucy Liu played Kitty Baxter.
