Pass the Ball Score for Social Inclusion A training course held in Larnaca on 24/03/2016 – 31/03/2016

''Pass the Ball, Score for Social Inclusion'' [PBSSI] is a nine months project along with an activity training course under KA1 Erasmus+ which aims to support youth workers in the This project was financed with the support of the European Commission. The content of the publication is the sole responsibility of the publisher and the European Commission is not liable for any use that may be made of the information acquisition of key competences in order to be more effective to develop and improve inclusive practices. The method and learning procedure will follow basically non formal techniques and activities influenced by Sports and Healthy lifestyle. The 28 participants come from 12 countries (Cyprus, Malta, Czech R., Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Poland, Slovakia) to Cyprus for 7 days training course carrying their own bags of knowledge, experience, personal and professional needs and they are willing to learn and contribute for the aims of the course. NECI as applicant organization has organized a partnership with other European partners who share similar worries, fears and situations where youth workers are not so confident or aware on how to assist youngsters being more active and socially included. Moreover, all partner organizations face same needs on developing the competences of their youth workers in order to enhance social inclusion through their communities. Our suggestion is that sports-healthy lifestyle and non-formal learning activities can bridge this gap and overcome

any barriers to inclusion and inactivity. Therefore, the main idea for the project and the training course is to develop all youth workers' proficiency and competences, suggest, design and implement inclusive practices and in long term to enhance social inclusion for the society through sports in combination to Non formal learning. This way we will support youth workers on their role which is to motivate youngsters to turn into more healthy (in mental, social and physical level) and active socially included citizens for their own improvement and development. Thus they will contribute in micro level to their local and regional community progress and in macro level to European and international community development.

The participants were divided into groups and were given the tasks of creating and modifying games in which they had to include all abilities.

The Tic Tac Toe Basketball

Goal: To implement dynamic part of throwing on basketball in team with the intellectual part of solving the Tic Tac Toe game. Material: One paper tape, 2 basketballs, 2 basketball hoops, 3 cones/t-shirts/marks of one colour and 3 of the other colour Flow: Group is divided into two teams of equal number of persons. The goal is that every member of the team throws exactly one basket and only after doing this, one member can put a colour mark on a field of Tic Tac Toe game which is in between of the basketball hoops created from the paper tape on the ground. Then the team needs to score all the baskets again and after that can put the second mark on the field. When one team puts 3 marks and doesn’t create a line, in next round it can replace one of the marks on the new field. The game continues until one of the teams scores all the 3 marks in a line. After this they can replace the members and play again.

Modifications: The basketball can be replaced for football, darts, hockey, or any other sport that requires scoring a point and each of the members can do it. Inclusive part: All the members need to score so there will be no rivalry in between the members, only help from the others. After the round they reorganize teams. The basketball can be replaced for any other sport for scoring a point.

The Blind Relay Race Goal: To race for time with being blind with one captain who guides the team. Material: Paper tape for marking the stations of members, 2 mattresses, 6 chairs, 6 cones, 2 baskets, 8 scarfs/blinding pads Flow: Needed are 2 teams of 5 members. They decide who will be the captain and will not be blind. Others take the blinding pad. 2 race lines are created next to each other divided into four parts. In the first part the first blind member needs to spin 3 times and then by the word guidance of the captain find the second member and pass him the ball. The second member needs to find the mattress while being blind with the captains’ help and do the somersault. After that he needs to find the third member and pass the ball to him. The third one needs to do the slalom between the chairs while guided by the captain and in the end pass the ball to the member number 4. The last member need to do the slalom jumping only on one leg and in the end find the basket and throw the ball into it. In the end the time is checked for the teams. After first round the members change roles and positions and they can start the second round. If they have the better time, they are improving. Modification: Changing of the obstacles and different challenges, the competition between teams might be switched for the time race or vice versa. Inclusive part: Each member has specific role, switching of the roles, beating the time, not the other team, being blind and putting yourself into blind people shoes, support from the captain.

“NORMAL” RULES In a volleyball court, there are two teams of six players each. The goal of each team is to shoot with 3 balls in the game the adversary. When a ball hits a player on the fly (no bounce) the player must temporarily leave the camp and go to the beanch. If the ball touches the ground before hitting the player, he is safe. It is forbidden to hit the head. When a player jumps at a ball, the opponent who launched the ball goes out, while his partner is free and back on the field. The team that eliminates all the opponents.

MODIFIED RULES Play with the sponge balls - that way you can involve even more players who are afraid of being hit by the ball; Enter the "passers" (players who are out of the opponent court and have the responsibility for collecting the balls that go out off the field and pass them to their peers) - in this way you can also engage players who are afraid of being hit by the ball, giving them a very important role Allowing opponents to hit only the legs - so the game becomes less dangerous Use only one ball - in this way the game becomes less chaotic.

The person that sees is not allowed to throw. Only the person with visual impairment is allowed to throw the ball. The person that sees has to guide the other person, so that he or she can hit another couple. If one pair is hit 1 time they are out. It is allowed to collect paper- balls from the ground.

WHAT COULD BE MODIFIED?

For sure some changes could be made in order to make the game more effective and even more inclusive.

To make it more effective:

First of all, it should last longer. Having only “one life” and being excluded from the game the first time it has been hit is not much fun: the game does not last enough time to enjoy it. Therefore, more “lives” should be added to every team. For example, the rule could be that the team is out of the game after being hit three times.

Second of all, it would have been nicer to use a bigger space and more teams. The game would have been louder and more fun.

To make the game more inclusive:

A change that could be done because of a sensitive issue is that instead of hugging the other person in the team, the couples could move arm in arm, which is much less intimate (some people could be bothered by intimacy).

THE TARGET GROUPS This game can be played by different target groups of people, not only by blind people. For example, it could be functional also for people in a wheel chair (that could be moved around by other people), or by people with different disabilities combined in a team (for example a blind person and a person with no arms: the first one can throw the balls, the second one can lead the other one both

physically and with words, describing the situation). The target can also be either children or adults, boys or girls, tall people and short people, thin people and fat people, etc. It is a game which is applicable to a wide range of groups of people.
