From the Desk of NJGT Director Joe Canny, PGA The first event is in the books and I couldn’t be more excited to get this season started. With over 70 events planned, I truly feel this is going to be the best season yet! Each season the golf organizations of Nebraska, Western Iowa and Southern South Dakota come together to discuss how to improve the NJGT each season and for 2016 we have a lot of exciting new additions.

New for 2016:  Tournament Sites This year we are expanding west with two new events in North Platte, NE. Hosted at Rivers Edge Golf Club and Lake Maloney Golf Course, these two events add a new market for the NJGT and hopefully help members from the area with travel.

Other new locations include Fox Run (NJGT & TEAM GOLF), The Bluffs Golf Club (TEAM GOLF), HiMark (TEAM GOLF) and Quarry Oaks Golf Club (NJGT).  Capital City Championship presented by the NGCSA Two-day championship ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard open to all divisions. *Great for those looking into college golf Hosted at Mahoney & Highlands in Lincoln, NE.  NJGT Championship Points Winners from each division in the four GolfTEC Premier Championships will receive an automatic bid into the NJGT Championship hosted at Quarry Oaks Golf Club. *Spots will be added to full field so no spots taken away  Prizes & Tee Gifts New sponsors providing cool new prizes and tee gifts for various NJGT & NJGT TEAM GOLF events.

A lot of team work, thought and effort went into providing you with a great season and we hope you enjoy. Race to Quarry Oaks Golf Club

This year’s 18-hole division NJGT Championship will be hosted at Quarry Oaks Golf Club, ranked as Nebraska’s #1 Golf Course by Golf Digest. The course has received such accolades as Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, Nebraska Golfer Magazine’s Most Scenic Golf Course and Nebraska PGA Facility of the Year. Known as Nebraska’s Toughest Course, Quarry Oaks will be the perfect place to crown our 2016 NJGT Champion. The top point winners in each division as of July 20th will earn their spot in the field for this majestic golf course. Invitation numbers will be posted on the points page of NJGT.org on July 1st.

Race to The Field Club of Omaha The 9-hole division championship will be hosted at The Field Club of Omaha once again for 2016. The oldest country club west of the Mississippi River, historic Field Club was the site of the 1941 US Amateur Championship as well as the home course for Nebraska legend Johnny Goodman. This tree-lined course will be the perfect ending to what looks to be another great season. Golfers will earn points through July 20th which will position them for an invite to the NJGT Championship.

USGA Handicap System Q & A Q. What is the current method for adjusting my hole scores under Equitable Stroke Control (ESC)?

A. ESC is an adjustment of individual hole scores (for handicap purposes) in order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. ESC is applied after the round and is only used when the actual score or the most likely score exceeds a player’s maximum number. ESC sets a limit to the number of strokes a player can take on a hole depending on Course Handicap™. Apply ESC to all scores, including tournament scores. Below is the maximum number a player can take:

Tour Tips We get a lot of young golfers here at GolfTEC who are often looking for more distance. We get asked all the time “what can I do to hit the ball further.” This isn’t easy to answer as every golfer is different, but we do have three drills that can help you find more distance: I see students being robbed of distance due to the sequence of their downswing. They will start their downswing with their arms and the body is left to play catchup. A great drill on the range is to hit balls using a full swing with your driver only 50 yards. The proper downswing sequence is easy at this speed. Next, you start gradually increasing to 100 yards, 125, 150 and so on. As you get to your full distance potential you will find that proper body sequence for the downswing.

Centeredness of contact (good ball striking) is essential for distance. GolfTEC Certified Instructor Andy Hilts has a chair drill which will truly help:

Fitness Facts PGA Sports Academy Fitness Tips Our friends from GolfTEC of Omaha shared some amazing drills which can help us gain more distance on the course. Pair these tips with a new golf strength training regimen and no par 5 will be safe! Though you swing with your arms, power is generated from the ground up. Below we have a few lower body strength training exercises which will help you find more yards with each club.

1. Single-Leg Deadlift—Deadlifts are great exercises for lower body power and the single-leg deadlift has you activate each glute independently which directly relates to the golf swing.

2. Goblet Squat—The squat is the most versatile lower body workout and had endless benefits for the golf swing….not just in power.

3. Lunge with Twists—Activates the power generating muscles in your lower body and the oblique muscles which also help create distance. Can be done with or without a weight.

With all exercise make sure to pace yourself, start slow and cross train. A proper diet, exercise routine and golf practice can help you achieve your goals in golf. Please look to past and future issues for more training tips as they relate to golf.
