Connecting with Her Marketing Strategies to Help Grow Your Business The world and the golf industry have continued to change with new technologies reshaping our economy. The cultural and social changes have made significant changes to every aspect of our lives. With these changes there has been a shift in priorities and a shift in the way people, particularly women, participate in this changing world order. Women now account for more than 52% of the population and 50 percent of the workforce. American women now represent $5 TRILLION of economic spending. This is bigger than many of the countries in the world. Women account for 93% of grocery purchases, 66% of personal computer purchases, 80% of healthcare purchases and 65% of new car purchases. But when we look at the golf industry, women account for less than 20% of spending. This number is not due to lack of interest as 42% of the 90 million people who have expressed interest in golf are women according to the Boston Consulting Group’s Golf 2.0 Study. Now you see the gap and the opportunity that it provides us to grow our business. It is because of this gap that The PGA of America and Nebraska PGA Section have been focusing so much this year on the Connecting with Her Strategic Initiative of the Golf 2.0 study. At the 2013 Nebraska Spring Meeting we were fortunate enough to have Sandy Cross, Director of Women’s & New Market Initiatives for The PGA of America visit and share her expertise. This article will focus on simple tactics to market to women and retain them as customers in your golf shop. Marketing Materials When men walk into a place they have laser-like focus on the task at hand, women are the ones who are far more likely to shop and view the marketing materials you have around the shop. There are several materials in your golf shop used to market your products. You have standup signs highlighting the newest offering from Callaway, there is a sign on the wall providing information on your lesson rates, photos are hung, emails are flying out and inside the locker room you have paper on the bulletin board with registration information for an upcoming scramble or league event. Take the time to walk through your entire facility and audit all your communication to determine how it impacts women. Here are some tactics when creating programs and materials targeted to women: 1. Women value experiences over product details. a. Lower COG on irons is less important than the fun she will have hitting the ball higher and keeping it on the green and putting for birdie. 2. Women will factor value through the eyes of those for whom she is responsible. a. Flyers from upcoming events should not only focus on her, but also include items those she associates with. 3. Women appreciate clear, clean and well-designed messages. a. Fewer images with short copy. Include a picture of what the experience is like and clear sentences including choice words like “We” or “Together”. 4. It’s all about people and story-telling. a. Make it about her and her family. 5. Emotions matter. a. Women look for context and the storyline that will create an emotional connection.

Marketing Strategies to Help Grow Your Business continued Social Media Women are the social drivers of our world and in turn make up the majority of social media. Women make up 55% of Facebook profiles (Ogilvy) and spend approximately 2.2 hours per day online (Yahoo!). Additionally BlogHer found that more than 80% of women trust the information they find on social media, and separately 92% of women pass along information on the best shopping deals to their friends (Ogilvy). Each woman represents a group of women or various groups of women. Use existing women customers to reach new groups. For these reason it is important to incorporate social media into your marketing strategies. 1. Twitter a. Twitter currently has over 500 million users and allows each to use 140-character messages called tweets to instantaneously update members of this social network. It represents not only a way to send messages to your customers, but also interact with them and respond to their concerns from anywhere. Examples of tweets include: i. New Ladies Get Golf Ready Classes starting July 1st. Grab some friends and learn together in a fun and social atmosphere. ii. Ladies League tonight at 5:00. Can’t wait for friends, family and fun! Still time to join the party. Contact the golf shop. iii. New Adidas Women’s Line in today. Check out these photos of their great new products available for purchase in our golf shop. 2. Facebook a. Facebook is the world’s largest social network with more than 1 billion active users. People and organizations can connect and share photos, videos and text updates. Keeping up-to-date in formation and photos is a great way to drive traffic to your page and the other messages you want them to read. 3. Pinterest a. Pinterest is a social photo-sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme based photo collections. It is the fastest site ever to gather 10 million unique visitors and is still growing. Demographics are heavily female and a great way for golf facilities to highlight merchandise, event photos and more. It is great at high lighting brands in a very visual manner! Leveraging Existing Relationship Getting started is always the hardest point, but thanks to the nature of women, they are generally happy to help! Showing interest, a request and hospitality on your end will go a long way. Here are some suggestions provided by the Connecting with Her Playbook: 1. Ask a family friend, spouse or mother to put together a group. a. Remember: Each women potentially represents many groups 2. Utilize “Bring a Friend.” 3. Work with local businesses and groups. 4. Mother/Daughter or Father/Daughter outings. 5. Work with the great Women PGA Professionals we have right here in the Nebraska PGA Section! Make the commitment today to make your golf facility more women-friendly and see all areas of your facility grow. To learn more about marketing to women and read the entire Connecting with Her Playbook, visit PGALinks.com.

Nebraska PGA Professional Making an Impact in the Fight Against Childhood Cancer Every day 36 children are diagnosed with cancer and these young people are also at the greatest risk of losing their battle with cancer. For many families across the country this is a very real situation. Nationally children’s cancer has drawn attention thanks to the University of Nebraska Football Team and Team Jack. Jack Hoffman, a seven-year-old kid who is battling brain cancer took the field at the Nebraska Football team’s Spring Game wearing his favorite No. 22 jersey (Rex Burkhead) and ran for a 69-yard touchdown. This was definitely a moment that left the crowd of 60,000 at Memorial Stadium misty -eyed. Locally, CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, a national non-profit foundation is making a From left to right, Team G.I. Jake and Jake Beresh pictured in the touchdown of their own by leading the way grey sweatshirt and on far right end, Dawn Neujahr, PGA. to make treatment possible and a cure probable. Dawn Neujahr, PGA from Champions Run has helped champion this effort in Omaha, NE by helping raise over $1.1 million in eight years. “The annual CureSearch Walk at Village Point Mall the first weekend in June celebrates and honors children whose lives have been affected by childhood cancer, while raising funds for lifesaving research,” said Neujahr. Neujahr has been instrumental in helping many families but one in particular, Team G.I. Jake (Jake Beresh). Jake is a young man who was diagnosed at age 6 with Ewings Sarcoma of his skull. Jake has endured 14 rounds of harsh inpatient chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation (in which he suffered a 3rd degree burn) and multiple surgeries, including one in which he lost 8 units of blood. “The CureSearch walk in Omaha, NE allows us to raise money and honor kids like Jake and the thousands of other families who know the pain of having cancer,” said Neujahr. “Jake has taught me and the thousands of lives he has touched to never give up,” said Neujahr. Neujahr also coordinates a FREE lesson experience during the CureSearch walk that has brought joy to many of these kids. “A majority of these kids never really have the chance to play sports due to their battle with cancer and for them to learn a game they can enjoy brings many smiles”, said Neujahr. “Dawn is a very special PGA Professional who has grasped the concept of ‘changing lives through golf.’ When you see the hundreds of smiles she brings each year through the free golf lesson experience its truly a sight to see,” said David Honnens, PGA, CEO of the Nebraska Section PGA.
