True to form, Naples is bursting with activity as Spring arrives — with so much to fill these pages that not quite everything fit (which is okay because they'll have their place in the May issue)!

What can I do with my stuff?

In honor of Earth Day (Monday, April 22), we have started compiling a list of resources for how/when/where to reduce, re-use, and recycle stuff here in our own communities. Beginning in May, I would like to make it an ongoing feature — along with extending a call-out to readers to send along any related information that would be helpful. There are so many great initiatives along these lines in the works or already happening around here — Let's hear about them!

This list will be updated each month as new information is received. With our ever-changing world, recycling options frequently change as well. For any information that is submitted, please include the source and a contact for verification, such as website, phone number, or email.

In the meantime, Ontario County's website is an excellent place to find this type of information: https://ontariocountyrecycles.org The renewal of Spring reminds us of how this unique place where we live, with its natural beauty and bounty and the people it draws, nurtures and sustains us all. Let's keep it protected, too. We need it now more than ever.

Greetings from a Hospeace House Resident Dear Readers of the Neapolitan & Naples community, Hi. I'm Dave Byrn, new resident of Naples. I live at Hospeace House. I want to tell you a little about myself and why I am living here now.

I grew up in California back in the 1960s. I moved back to New York in 1975. I lived in Seneca Falls for a number of years. I've had lots of jobs. Some didn't last long, some did. But I have always worked. I was in special education. I've had a rough life, but now I think I have a good ending.

I'm at Hospeace House now after leaving a difficult situation. I have stage 4 cancer and needed a place where I can get taken care of since I have no family. There are good, friendly people here. The staff is good. There is good food and I have a nice room.

All the people who are here have helped me learn about myself, and accept where I'm at. They take good care of me. I got a special pin and plaque for being a veteran; there was a ceremony here for me.

I wear my pin every day. I go to the mailbox to get the mail. I also love to play cards with the volunteers.

And I have another hobby which I am trying to share with others here because I want to give back to my caregivers. I am teaching them sign language! I am looking forward to spring and summer walks outdoors, and no more snow.

Come to Hospeace House if you want to help people like me. I would like to meet you.

Contributing to the Story of Naples

Dear Neapolitan Record,

Dear Neapolitan Record Editor,

With the current controversy over the Bladensburg cross and with Easter just around the corner I would like to offer a comment. An often heard claim among some Christian denominations and/or individuals is that Christianity is under attack. I suggest that that is not true. Rather what is under attack is Christian entitlement. The following are some examples: To whom are the prayers offered in public places such as before meetings or before games and even before class in public schools? By and large they are to a Christian god. Is that not forcing those in attendance into participating with what you believe?

Which religious followers ask, even insist and are allowed to place religious displays on public land?

Those of the Christian faith. Which religion places crosses in cemeteries regardless of the faith of all those buried there? Again followers of the Christian faith. Then there are those who insist on wishing everyone a Merry Christmas without knowing or caring about the beliefs of those they are offering their wishes to.

All of these send a message that if you are not Christian you should be. It sends a message that only what I believe matters and your beliefs do not bear consideration. No other belief system in the United States is allowed these privileges. Only Christianity gets a pass.

The public includes everyone. There should be no preferential treatment of one group over another but there is. Might I suggest to those who insist so much on forcing their religious beliefs on others that they take a step back and consider how they would feel if other beliefs were forced on them and what right others had to do so.

Your opening letter in the March issue got me thinking about local Naples history. I would like to share a few thoughts:

(1) Some of the first local history I learned was while working with Jim Barbour during the sumer of 1986 to restore a building for John Brahm. It was part of a group of farm buildings previously owned by Charles Standish, and eventually became The Brown Hound Restaurant. The other buildings were just farm storage at that point, but later became Arbor Hill.

I helped with remodelling the interior and repairing stonework in the basement, similar to what I did at the Mill. Wayne Schenk and Danny Bills worked on the deck.

I have a few funny memories. One day a guy name "Mully" was doing drywall and walked into a small little closet and fell right through the floor. Luckily the basement was dirt! When Jim Engel joined us, he liked to give Jim Barbour a hard time whenever he arrived after him: "What is this - Bankers' hours?"

John and Katie were very low stress to work for. They trusted Jim B. and his crew and let us do our thing. That fall, Jim B. returned to teach school and Bill Musnicki and Bob Harris took over the project to finish the fine details.

(2) U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's recent efforts to designate the Finger Lakes region as a National Heritage Area are exciting. I hope this community will have more conversations about this. This is a chance for us to think about What is the STORY of the Finger Lakes area, and how Naples is a huge part of that story, including the underground railroad movement and the development of local wineries in this region.

A National Heritage Area designation would be an excellent way to attract visitors to Naples, though we also need to consider how to accommodate more people here. There are many ways we need to prepare. (Electric car-charging ports would be great!) But also: what will the pros & cons be?

Now is the time to think about this and make intentional plans.

Ontario County Office for the Aging joins in month-long March for Meals Celebration with communities nationwide Your support will help fight senior hunger and isolation in Ontario County Naples – Office for the Aging participated in the 17th annual March for Gordon Brink, an Ontario County Meals – a month-long, Home Delivered Meal recipient, with nationwide celebration of Naples Town Supervisor, Tamara Hicks. Meal on Wheels and our (Photo provided) senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain health and independent at home.

OFA had a very successful March for Meals program on Friday, March 22, 2019. They had several county dignitaries deliver meals to bring attention to our Home Delivered Meals program and their urgent need for volunteer drivers. Jack Marren, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Tamara Hicks, Town Supervisor of Naples, Jeff Gallahan, Supervisor of Manchester and Honorable Mayor Ellen Polimeni accompanied our volunteers to help deliver meals.

“The services we provide are a lifeline for Ontario County seniors and the need is rapidly increasing,” said Irene Coveny, Director of Ontario County Office for the Aging. “Together, we can keep our senior neighbors well-nourished, feeling safer and more connected to our community as they age.”

The Village of Naples will be offering residents and small businesses lower and stable electric rates through the CCA Program. The Program will begin in July and run for 24 months with a fully fixed price of $0.05092/kWh. Renewable electricity is also available.

Your electric bill has two main sections, delivery and supply. With the CCA you will still pay the delivery portion of your bill to NYSEG. With the Village’s CCA Program we replace NYSEG as the default electric supplier.

The CCA Program is all about choice and you have the opportunity not to participate. The Village is able to offer this opportunity through a partnership with MEGA, the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance and 19 other Cities, Towns and Villages in our region.

Brush Burning Prohibited in New York State through May 14 Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos reminds residents, "While many people associate wildfires with the western United States, the start of spring weather and the potential for dry conditions increases the risk for wildfires in New York. New York prohibits residential burning during the coming high-risk fire season to reduce wildfires and protect people, property, and natural resources."

Violators of the state's open burning regulation are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions, with a minimum fine of $500 for a first offense.

Showing throughout the month of April @ Naples Library, 118 S Main St, Naples Clint Simmons is a local artist that attended Naples High School and currently lives in Canandaigua. His artwork is mostly mixed media abstract collages using paper, acrylic paint, ink and markers. He finds inspiration from years of studying theology, philosophy and psychology.

Larkin and Trevor are wedding photographers serving Naples and the surrounding region. Both natives to the Canandaigua Lake area, much of their inspiration is drawn from local landscapes, and they first discovered their love for photography by capturing the night sky and natural world here at home.

OCAC Presents "The Majesty of Flight"

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 6th 1-3pm @ Ontario County Historical Museum North Gallery, 55 N. Main Street, Canandaigua

The Ontario County Arts Council is kicking off their 2019 residency at the Ontario Co. Historical Museum on April 6th with a group exhibit. "The Majesty of Flight" Exhibit contains a wide variety of new pieces of artwork, created OCAC members.

This flight-themed exhibition contains a collection of over 50 works of photography, drawings, needle felting, collage, sculpture and paintings done in oils, acrylics and watercolors. It showcases the creative talents of the Arts Council members who are demonstrating their unique, creative take on this theme of anything and everything that flies. There are images of planes, birds, butterflies, hot air balloons and much more to see within this exhibit.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday April 6th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where the public can meet some of the exhibiting artists, view the artwork and enjoy some light refreshments. The artwork will continue to be on display through Thursday June 13th, during the regular open hours at the Historical Museum, located at 55 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY. Admission to the museum is ALWAYS FREE, and family friendly. Details can be found online at www.ocarts.org

There is no charge for the service, but donations will be accepted for the Honeoye Food Pantry.

Taking Baghdad Book Signing & Author Talk with Aaron Grant Tuesday, April 16th 6-7pm

Taking Baghdad: Victory in Iraq with the US Marines is one of the few histories of Operation Iraqi Freedom written by a Marine who actually served in the war. It covers the twenty-two-day push to Baghdad in 2003, which was one of the most efficient conflicts in the annals of warfare. This book is for soldiers and civilians, for historians and the young who need to understand war. So much more than facts and figures, Taking Baghdad is a dynamic account of the real struggles of war. Corporal Grant illuminates the success in Iraq for those who see Iraq for what it became afterward: a war in which America lost heart.

Written on sand-covered pages during the invasion and after, the author guides us step by step on a journey through the desert, through war and peace.

Join author Aaron Grant, 2008 retired Staff Sergeant United States Marine Corps, for a book talk and signing of Taking Baghdad. Grant was commander of a local VFW and is commandant of a growing Marine Corps League detachment in his hometown in upstate New York. He is the author of Shaping the Colonies: Essays on Early American History and The Non-Commissioned Officer's War: Combined Action Doctrine that could have Saved Vietnam. He received his bachelor's degree in American history at Empire State and holds a master's degree in military history at Norwich University. He currently teaches American history using intellectual, economic, and military perspectives at John 15 Leah Homeschooling Group in Middlesex, NY. Blackout Poetry Workshop with Edgar Brown in honor of National Poetry Month Thursday, April 18th 6-7:30pm

By Edgar Brown I wasn’t familiar with the term ‘blackout poetry’ and immediately thought of drug-inspired verse a la Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Kubla Khan. Investigating further, I found a delightful alternative to writing and drawing on a blank sheet of paper. Starting with a blank sheet of paper can be intimidating when you are still searching for the first word or mark to make upon it. Blackout poetry, simply put, is what is left after you’ve “blacked out” all the non-essential words on a printed page. The words chosen can also inspire visual imagery that complements your chosen text. The words on your page become creative writing prompts. You make the magic happen when your personal thoughts and experiences are found, expressed in the hidden language of your printed page.

Blackout poetry is related to erasure poetry and is the latest trend on Instagram and Pinterest with whole accounts and pages dedicated to it (www.instagram.com/makeblackoutpoetry/).

Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like An Artist, stated in a 2012 TEDxKC talk that a man named Caleb Whitford took some of the first print newspapers of the 1700’s, collected puns and word plays, and published a broad sheet of his findings. Other sources credit Doris Cross as the innovator with her Dictionary Columns in 1965. Major works have been created from deconstructing Milton’s Paradise Lost (Ronald Johnson’s Radi Os), Davis Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest (Jenni B Baker’s Erasing Infinite) and Shakespeare’s sonnets (Jen Bervin’s Nets).

There are many compelling reasons for you to create your own blackout poetry, even if you aren’t a writer or painter.

• As in any creative endeavor, making blackout poetry has the ability to lead us to self-discovery and since poetry usually means writing about feelings and emotions it can be cathartic.

• The quiet process, exciting, sacred, transformative, becomes a healing activity.

Studies show that just making simple art for 45 minutes can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone.

• Serious writers often use the process to jump start their creative energies.

• An exercise like looking at and combining words in different ways stimulates brain function, develops vocabulary, and increases problem-solving skills-all skills that can be applied to other areas of life.

I like blackout poetry because • it makes us hold actual literature and work with the literal printed word.

• it removes us from the digital screen, and rewards our creative time productively.

Making things becomes as important as doing things.

Join Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District, Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County at the Naples Library as we welcome Charlotte Malmborg from the NYS Hemlock Initiative for a presentation about research updates and management of hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA).

In this talk you'll learn about the importance of hemlocks on our landscape, the threat of HWA, the present and future of HWA management in New York, and how you can be involved in slowing the spread of HWA in your area. Hemlock trees are a foundation species in our forests and are threatened by the invasive HWA. The New York State Hemlock Initiative addresses this threat through research, management practices, and outreach. This workshop is intended for all, including beginners just learning about hemlock trees and HWA, as well as those with intermediate knowledge and/or skill looking to stay updated and engaged.

Attendance is free, but please let us know you are coming so we can plan accordingly. Participants are encouraged to bring note taking supplies. Snacks will be provided!

Get ready for the St. J's 5k!

The St. J's 5K was started as a way to involve the community in raising monies for community charities and programs while at the same time benefitting the wellness of all participants. St. Januarius Church has been very gracious in offering the use of the Church facilities for the event. All levels of fitness are welcomed: walkers, joggers, and competitive runners are all encourgaed to participate.

The 5K and Kids Fun Run are totally volunteer driven with all proceeds (after race costs) given to community charities and programs. Thousands of dollars have been raised and given back to the community due to the outstanding support of community businesses and participation in the event from many throughout the Naples community.

Past recipients of the funds raised include: Operation Santa, The Open Cupboard and Closet, The Naples Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Naples Volunteer Fire Department, Naples School Robotics Club, the Naples Angels, the Naples High School Musical, the Gary Schenk Scholarship, the Naples’ Hospeace House, and the Naples School Student Wellness Challenge Program.

If you are currently mourning the loss of a spouse, child, family member, or friend, it may seem impossible to think that you could move from an overwhelming sense of mourning into one of joy. You may have found that not many people understand the deep hurt you feel, and this can lead to a sense of isolation that simply heightens the sense of loss.

There is help available, though, as you navigate your own grief journey.

GriefShare is a non-denominational grief support group that provides help and encouragement in this difficult time by walking with you on the long path through grief toward healing and hope for the future.

Hilltop Fellowship Church of Naples is sponsoring the GriefShare program which will meet in the 2nd floor conference room of the Hospeace House, accessible through the front door and up the stairs. It will be led

by Pastor John Evarts who is also the Spiritual Leader at the Hospeace House. He will be assisted by Sherie Heins and Trudy Pendino. Meetings will take place on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm beginning March 14 and running for 13 weeks.

Each session is “self-contained,” so it is not critical if you miss a week. The wide variety of topics covered in the sessions includes “Challenges of Grief,” “Grief and Your Relationships,” and “What Do I Live For Now?” as well as many other issues common to a grief journey. Each week consists of a video seminar, support group discussion, and journaling and personal study exercises in your own GriefShare workbook.

Registration is required and there is a $15.00 fee to help cover the cost of the material. Scholarships are available so that cost will not be a deterrent to anyone. John H. Brahm III (1942 - 2019) Naples/South Bristol—John H. Brahm III, of Hawks Road, passed unexpectedly at home on Saturday, March 2. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Katharine (Hawks) Brahm, two daughters Tina M. (Blane) Dickey and Sherry (John) Brahm-French, four grandchildren John Blane, Austin Kyle, Luke Alan and Moriah Katharine Dickey, two brothers Tom (Kathy) Brahm and Paul (Sandee) Brahm, sister-in-law Cindy Brahm, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Katharine, his brother Roger Brahm, and his parents, Doris & John (Jack) Brahm, Jr.

John graduated from Cornell University with degrees in pomology and business. After 23 years with Widmer Winery, John and Katie started Arbor Hill Grapery and Winery in 1987. The business has grown to include their popular restaurant "Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill" along with a successful line of over 55 gourmet food products and more than 25 award winning wines.

John, along with his brother Tom, founded Randall-Standish Vineyards in the early 1970s. He was a Rotarian with 48 years of perfect attendance and proud of being a lifelong Eagle Scout.

A charter member of the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail, a founding member and a long time board member of the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection, and a board member of Ontario County Industrial Development Association for many years. An original founder of the Cornell University Shaulis Fund which

presents scholarships to viticulture students. Also an active member of several local organizations including the South Bristol Historical Society.

On Saturday, March 16th, a service was held with Pastor Mark Spaid of the Bristol Springs Free Church officiating; and was immediately followed by a celebration of life, as John had planned.

Both were held at Parish Hill Barn, which was filled to capacity with standing room only that day. Family members, loved ones, and several community members shared stories to honor John.

Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery will be done privately at a later date. Ronna L. Hudson (1935 - 2019) Naples - Ronna L. Hudson, 84, passed away on Friday, March 22nd in Canandaigua.

Ronna was born in Canandaigua in 1935 to the late Jack & Beulah (Hoyt) Randall. In addition to her parents, Ronna was predeceased by her husband John "Jack" Hudson.

For many years, Ronna worked as an executive assistant at 3M in Honeoye; afterward, she played many roles in local communities as an aid, bus monitor and substitute teacher at both Naples and Wayland Central Schools. As a lover of the arts, she also was an announcer and helper at CMAC in Canandaigua, where she never missed a concert; and at Bristol Valley Theatre in Naples; and was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary at the VFW in Naples. Ronna was very passionate about her adopted pets and enjoyed spending time with her dear friends and family.

Ronna is survived by her sister, Margo Deusenbery of Naples; her brother, Wayne Hoyt of Southport NC; and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 28th at the Baird-Moore Funeral Home, immediately followed by burial in Rose Ridge Cemetery.

Lament for Local Legends

One day, just six hours, to learn all the history that was in John Brahm’s brain was definitely not enough. When you are given a job and you know you have a lot to learn, you ask for a mentor. South Bristol history, I was told, “is the specialty of Roger and John Brahm.”

Unfortunately, I started too late to meet Roger.

He is one of the local legends who make our beautiful home such a special place. And he had a profound influence on the Bristol Hills Historical Society; a debt we can never repay.

When I asked John if I could interview him about South Bristol history, he too, said I should have met his brother, but I know now it was partially his characteristic modesty and mostly his love for a beloved brother. John offered to take me “on tour” with him for a day so he could narrate as we drove from Cook’s Point to Monks Rd. On a beautiful January Thaw day, I met John at Arbor Hill where I was given the special behind-the-scenes tour. He was wearing a wool cap, a checked flannel shirt, and a red vest and I felt as if I was about to be taken into fairyland by a smiling elf. His grin was contagious, but it was the barely contained enthusiasm that bubbled through his voice and animated his quick steps that convinced me there were places we needed to see, and the magic began.

John labelled a few more bottles of wine in the packed storeroom before we headed through a twenty foot hallway covered with award plaques for Arbor Hill wines. He waved at them casually and again, I knew he was a proud and yet humble man who had achieved greatness. In the office he explained his daily routine as he grabbed the keys to the van,

waved good day to three employees, sprinted down the stairs, and hopped into the front seat.

On the south side of Cook’s Point Rd. John reminisced about the building of “rock cut” on Rte. 21 near Woodville in the 1950’s, and pointed out what the old road would have looked like by showing me the remnants of a stone bridge in the ravine. He described the vineyards on the left and then named the owners, builders, or current residents of every home on the point. A doctor, insurance broker, real estate developer, and first generation German immigrants all enhanced the map I scribbled as he spoke. John said that Glen Cottage is possible the oldest cottage on the lake and was originally owned by the Holcomb family. Cook’s Point was also the site of a steamboat landing because of very deep water close to the shore. The covered bridge, that is still there, was originally a boat depot before it was moved to its present location. Elm Lodge was located behind the tennis court and “Wigglywam” behind the Brown Cottage was a carriage house and housing for the hired help of the Lodge.

Marwich Hill, to the west, was once covered with grapes. Concord, Delaware, and Vergennes grapes, along with apples, peaches, and cherries were all shipped from the point to Canandaigua and then on to New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh during the boom years 1860-1905.

My favorite part of the day was John’s tour of his own property. His grape packing shed used to be heated by a wood stove above while the picked grapes were stored in the basement until they could be taken from wooden grape boxes and packed into smaller “pony baskets” that had a cover and could be neatly packed into trays.

The trip to the lake would start when the grapes were loaded onto horse- drawn freight wagons from the second floor. Another perfect example of a grape packing barn can be seen on the west side of the very northern end of County Rd. 12 and finally explained to me why there was a man-door twelve feet off the ground.

In the basement of his barn we found an up-cycled farm implement John had turned into a grape row fertilizer for a college project and later used on the property. It was a poignant reminder that his chosen vocation has been a life-long passion and family legacy. His tour of the collection of vintner’s supplies, grape boxes and labels continued to his home from which we could see the incredible view toward Vine Valley where John said, the first vineyards in the area were located. His own property was once a cherry orchard belonging to Charles Standish.

John’s best history lesson described the presence of Vergennes grapes here in South Bristol: The 1762 Battle of Quebec was won by the British over the French so in 1777 after the Declaration of Independence, Louis XVI wrote to Benjamin Franklin to “applaud his efforts” (fighting against the British) and wanted to

help by sending experienced military men, money, and blockades. One of those soldiers was the Comte de Vergennes, whom Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys honored by naming a town after him in Vermont. In 1874 an amateur horticulturalist named William Green, discovered a breed of grape that shipped and stored well and named it after his city. The Vergennes grape made it to South Bristol where it was valuable as a table grape, especially during the Depression, since it withstood the long shipping process to metropolitan centers.

Later Widmer used the grape in a blended wine but eventually eliminated the Vergennes in favor of other grapes.

Luckily some of the vines still survived in the area and in 2006, John made Arbor Hill Vergennes which won a gold medal. He called the mayor of Vergennes, Vermont and took two grape vines and a case of the award winning wine back to Vermont to celebrate their French Heritage Day on July 14th.

John’s typical magnanimous gesture was to honor a whole town that had contributed to his success.

Our day on tour was broken up by a Rotary meeting and luncheon. It was a total surprise to me when John took me as his guest, but it was not until last week that I learned that he had perfect attendance at meetings. Ironically, the speaker that day was talking about the Boy Scouts of America and Eagle projects, another badge in John’s collection.

After lunch we passed Grisea Hill Rd. where Konz’ barn used to sell juice to home wine makers who today are still allowed to produce up to 200 gallons of homemade wine for personal consumption. The Old Graff winery located on the Griesa Hill Rd., quit production during the Depression as so many local brewers and wineries did between 1920-1933, but their mechanical grape press and an old still were rescued by Arbor Hill and are used for making Rhine Street White. John named the original owners of every single historic home in Bristol Springs on our way to Bopple Hill Rd. From Coye Cemetery to the lake used to be the vineyard for Great Western Winery.

The ripples denoting former rows are visible on the hillside as it gently slopes toward the Miller Winery, the last building on the left of Bopple Hill Rd. Several generations of men named George Miller are buried in the Coye cemetery, seemingly standing guard over their former grape vines.

On Seneca Point Rd. John pointed out where the Fox homestead and vineyard once stood. Nearby lived the McKechnie family

Moments from a legendary life...

John Brahm never turned down an opportunity to showcase his stylish Purple Speedster — be it at a social event or to give a newly engaged lady a whirl around the block. It wouldn’t be odd to see John and Katie cruising down Eastern Blvd. in Canandaigua, both with huge smiles on their face as passersby honked and hooted at the purple streak.

Graduating Seniors Urged to Apply for Guild Scholarships — Deadline: April 19th, 2019 Canandaigua – The Thompson Health Guild is offering up to four, $2,000 scholarships to be awarded to students who have been enrolled their entire senior year at a high school located within the service area of UR Medicine Thompson Health.

These awards will be made on the basis of merit to high school seniors who will enroll in any university, college, or school offering post-secondary education in a health-related field. The scholarship awards are not restricted to a New York State college or university.

Scholarships are awarded at the guild’s annual dinner, in June. The scholarship funds will be presented in January 2020, following the recipients’ successful completion of their first semester of college with intent to continue to study in healthrelated fields.

Scholarship application forms have been distributed to area high school counselors and are also available at www.ThompsonHealth.com/Guild. Counselors complete the fourth page of the applications and submit them to the guild. All applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 19, in order to be considered.

Cole Rathbun signs National Letter of Intent to attend Mercyhurst University

By Mike Fowler Naples High School senior Cole Rathbun signed a National Letter of Intent on Monday, March 11th to attend Mercyhurst University on a soccer scholarship. The 2018 Section V Finger Lakes West Player of the Year will join a Division II Lakers squad that went 9-6-2 last year in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. He’ll major in business finance.

Rathbun played four years on the Naples varsity team and finished with 38 goals and 37 assists while helping the Big Green to a 59-8 overall record. Rathbun never lost a league game during his varsity career, going 44-0-4.

In addition to being named the 2018 Section V Player of the Year, Rathbun earned a spot on the 2018 All-Greater Rochester second team, and on the all-New York State team. He also was the Canandaigua Daily Messenger’s Finger Lakes Player of the Year in 2017.

Mercyhurst Head Coach Nenad Vidakovic likes Rathbun’s play-making ability.

“He’s not a very big kid, but he’s so quick on his feet and has such good vision along with the ability to make his teammates better with savvy passes and a quick attack,” Vidakovic said. “And you can always count on Cole to give 100 percent effort.”

Big Green Coach Tom Mannella said Mercyhurst is getting the ultimate team player.

“They’re going to love Cole and his game,” Mannella said. “He’s just so good with the ball and he’s one of the best playmakers we’ve ever had. And he’s a great teammate. I congratulate him and wish him the best of luck.”

For a few days in mid-March, Neapolitans caught Robotics Fever as they cheered on the Naples robotics team (FIRST Team 1551) during their efforts at the 2019 Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition Events. Events were held March 13-16 at the Gordon Field House at RIT, and were free and open to the public to attend.

To participate in FIRST Robotics Competition, teams of 10+ students follow strict rules with limited resources and time to build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors at this main annual event. The program gives students a taste of “real world” engineering, and also helps them to qualify for scholarships at over 150 colleges/universities.

Naples FIRST Team 1551 calls itself “The Grapes of Wrath” and is currently made up of 10 students and 11 volunteer Professional Mentors.

At this year's competition, the Naples team went through several qualifying matches, remaining undefeated (against teams five to ten times their size!) to go all the way to the semi-finals. They were knocked out only after winning thirteen out of fifteen games.

In addition to folks attending the event, community members shared in the excitement through online video coverage and updates posted on the Naples NY Community Facebook Page by FIRST Team 1551's Drive Coach Patrick Frievald. In a post after the event was over, Frievald shared this quote by physicist Richard Feynman: “Doing the great thing is its own reward, and if you already have the reward, then you don't need an award.”

Founded in 2005 by the school Physics teacher Patrick Freivald, the team is made up of students from grades 7 to 12. Team 1551 runs year round with training, fundraising, and build projects in the off-season. We demo our robot at the Grape festival, Science Fair, and school functions. We also have two FLL teams, both in Naples. Through the team, the school offers an Intro to Robotics class, teaching the basics of robot design."

Ashton is a Senior at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, has achieved the Dean’s List every semester and will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. Ashton is the daughter of Beth and Shane Allison of Hemlock, the granddaughter of Kathy and Keith Stumbo of Honeoye and of Deborah Allison of Naples.

Ashton is only 20 and has taken advantage of so many adventurous opportunities. She has been to Costa Rica, hiked the Badlands, and spent the summer on Mt. Rainier. While in Australia she has gone snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, learned to surf, gone skydiving, explored the Australian desert, and within a few weeks she will experience the largest swing in the world, in New Zealand (like a bungee drop, but instead of bouncing - you swing!). She is amazing the entire family and her friends back in Honeoye....some of whom never get the chance to leave Upstate New York!

While Ashton worked at Mr. Ranier last summer, she ran into Cloe Luthan-Green, a Naples graduate. Both girls were Varsity soccer players for their respective high schools and recognized each other immediately. Small World indeed!

Honoeye Student Artists create joy at Quail Summit Tim Williams, art teacher at Honeoye Central School District, found an opportunity for his students to make a difference in the community and truly connect them in a meaningful way with older adults. For the third year running, the Tim Williams Portraiture Project at Quail Summit is bringing together the generations to find the beauty and character of the human being. The Portraiture Project has expanded to over 20 students this year.

The project started in February when Williams and his students arrived at Quail Summit to meet with older adults whose images they will capture in painted portraits. Tim Williams said, “I am thrilled to have so many enthusiastic students interested in meeting, and painting portraitures of the Quail Summit Residents, in our 3rd year more students are asking to get involved in this art/community service activity. We have nine Honeoye students who have participated last year, and two who have painted portraitures in the first and second year, along with a number of first year painters, Sophomores, and two students from Honeoye Falls Lima.”

In addition to the efforts of the painting students, Maddie Faraut along with her film crew from Rochester Institute of Technology will be creating a full-scale documentary of the Portraiture Project.

Gloria Harrington, Executive Director at Quail Summit said, “This continues to be one of the highlights of our year. It is a wonderful, fun learning project for both the residents and students. A handful of the students have maintained their friendships with residents over the years.”

Residents at Quail Summit are talking about the Portraiture Project. Janet Read, resident and retired teacher said, “I hadn’t had a good talk with a teenager in a long time. I had such fun hearing all about school.” Mary V. Crowley – Aunt Ginny said, “The enthusiasm of the young people is like an injection that feels so good. Mr. Williams is to be congratulated on his manner and the educational contributions to his students.”

Al Talke, who was painted in the first year of the project chose to be painted again this year because he enjoyed the personal aspects of the project. Talke said, “I decided to do it again to see how much the project has grown and because I enjoyed meeting the students and their family. It is very personal to see the artists’ point of view radiate in their work.”

The students unveiled the completed portraits to the “models,” with their friends and family at an art exhibit at Quail Summit on Tuesday, March 26th.

By Clyde Yee John Hodge Lodge #815, is a Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge located in Naples, NY, and was established in 1895. This is the third Masonic lodge in Naples, the first was established in 1824. Naples’ current Lodge was named after John Hodge, the Grand Lodge Master of New York at the time, and was the 815th Lodge established in New York.

Free and Accepted Masons are a fraternal organization with strong social purpose whose members have high moral standards and work to the benefit of others. The history of the organization goes back to England in 1717. The first Masonic Lodge was established in North America in Pennsylvania in 1731. Freemasonry is the world’s largest, oldest and most honorable fraternity with approximately five million masons worldwide, two million in the United States and over 60,000 within the State of New York.

Throughout history in the United States, Masons have occupied notable positions as State Governors, U.S. and State Senators and Congressional Representatives, doctors, generals and business leaders. 9 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Masons. 14 United States Presidents, from George Washington to Gerald Ford were Masons, also 8 Vice Presidents and 42 Supreme Court Justices. Tobey's Clothing Store, 120 S Main Street (now occupied by Sutton Spoons)

Sutton Spoons on Main Street, Naples is well known both here and worldwide, but how many know that there was a men's clothing store there beginning in the 1860's?

Lyman Tobey had a clothing store first, and then his sons, William and George, owned the store. George Tobey sold the store in 1936. (More details in obituary at right.)

that started the McKechnie Brewing Company, founded the Canandaigua Lake Steam Navigation Company, and managed the Seneca Point Hotel until it burned in 1899. They grew hops in Bristol and South Bristol which were shipped along with barley on steamboats to Canandaigua to be used in the brewery. Directly across the street from the site of the hotel is a NYS landmark sign describing the Seneca Orchard that was settled by Gamaliel Wilder in 1788. It seems that the fruit has long marked the “sweet spot” of the Finger Lakes region.

Finally, we ended our day, appropriately, at the RandallStandish Winery. Elmer Standish and Anna Randall were John’s grandparents and the triangle corner of Hicks Rd. and 24

Rte. 21 is an historic landmark for “who’s who” in Bristol and South Bristol. The Greens, Brahms, Gages, Fletchers, and several other familiar names in the area are all descendants of Myles Standish or the Randalls who migrated here from New England in the early 1800’s to grow hops and fruit. Not much has changed in our landscape or our pursuit of great fruit and drinks, and John and Roger appreciated that fact, relishing their lives in the chosen spot of their ancestors.

I was blessed to be able to share six hours learning from a master of many trades, a true gentleman, and proud South Bristol resident. As magic hour began and the sun was setting, I knew that we were all lucky to have shared even a brief time with the brothers who held so much of our histories, not only in their heads, but also in their hearts.

An update on the Fleischman Family organ.

After the Fleischman Family organ was restored by Parsons Organ of South Bristol this past winter, Naples Historian John Murphy and I met for coffee at the Grainery* with Donna Evarts and her brother, George Fleischman, grandchildren of the instrument's original owners.

Donna says her grandparents, Fred & Caroline Fleischman, purchased the organ from a Sears catalog, sometime around 1910. The story goes that it came by train to Atlanta, then by oxcart to Naples, and then up County Line Road to the family's farm house at the top of Strong Hill Road. A mail order product, the organ's sturdy construction seemed designed to endure road travel, and probably has helped to keep it intact for all these years.

In 1979, Donna's brother, Richard Fleischman, donated the organ to Bill Vierhiele, who initially stored it in Memorial Town Hall. Now fully restored, it awaits its next concert at the Morgan Hose Building... *By coincidence, Donna shared that her mom used to work at the Ben Franklin 5 & Dime which existed on Main Street in a space that is now part of the Naples Library, and the Grainery where we were sitting! After her mom worked all day, Donna remembers that she would walk back home in the evenings, often carrying groceries, in the dark, up the muddy dirt road to home — Strong Hill Rd. was only paved in the early oughts of this century!

We have openings on our BHHS committees for grant writing, inventorying, cataloguing, fundraising, researching, publicizing, displaying, programming, repairing cemeteries, and enhancing our buildings and grounds projects. There are many ways you could lend a hand in these community projects.

For some environmentalists, Earth Day invites reflection on historical, political, and societal wins that protect human life on earth. For businesses, Earth Day can be a time to garner public attention for environmentally-friendly activities and practices. But for Food for the Spirit, an emerging non-profit, Earth Day extends beyond environmental sustainability, in pursuit of racial healing – personally and for the community. Such healing is necessary to allow all people to enjoy and respect the environment and natural ecosystems of our shared home.

There is a widespread belief that race is a social construct. It also has real consequences — of race and racism, seen in racial and socioeconomic disparities. Another group exploring this subject is the Movement Generation, a national organization that partners with communities through their Justice & Ecology project, “committed to a Just Transition away from profit and pollution and towards healthy, resilient and life-affirming local economies.” One point they make is that “The economic activity of peoples who have developed long relationships with the ecosystems they are a part of have tended towards balance. This traditional evolved knowledge of place is held in language, food, culture and story.” 1 Many Neapolitans have developed a knowledge of place here in the Finger Lakes. You can see that in local activities, such as the maple sugaring events, the Environmental Literacy Book Club, and Summit in the Valley. I accompanied a group of teenagers to Summit in the Valley last May and we learned so much!

The diverse perspectives and environmentally-friendly efforts grounded in people’s personal experiences made the Summit in the Valley event impactful for me last year; we learned from many local people who had used their strong ecological understandings to develop local solutions to the climate crisis. This year, Summit in the Valley has a great new theme: “Be a Change Maker!”

In our region, the Haudenosaunee people have a powerful traditionally evolved knowledge of place. The Haudenosaunee (the Native American term for Iroquois)

lived here in Naples and the Finger Lakes and throughout New York State for centuries before other settlers arrived. This past February, I made my first visit to the Ganondagan State Historic Site’s Native American Winter Games. Located in Victor NY, Ganondagan is a National Historic Landmark and hosts the only Seneca town developed and interpreted in the United States. (See inset at lower left.) The Seneca people are one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy (or Haudenosaunee).

Offerings at the Winter Games that day included Iroquois White Corn-inspired food, demonstrations of a Haudenosaunee sport called “snowsnake” and traditional stories told by Perry Ground, storyteller from the Onandaga Nation (another of the six nations of the Iroquois). In those activities at Ganondagan’s Winter Games, I saw what Movement Generation was talking about in how the Seneca’s long relationship with their regional ecosystem impacted their society and culture.

In addition to what we can learn from the Haudenosaunee people through great resources such as Ganondagan, there is also a lot to learn about the need for racial healing for Native and Non-Native communities. In late March, Food for the Spirit hosted a presentation at the Rochester Folk Art Guild by Pete Hill, who is part of the Cayuga Nation (again, another of the six nations of the Iroquois). Pete is the “All Our Relations” Project Director at Native American Community Services of Erie & Niagara Counties, and has spent over 26 years working with youth and community programs addressing alcohol and substance abuse prevention, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, teen pregnancy prevention, and HIV risk reduction. Pete integrates Native American cultural teachings and approaches into program design and is especially concerned with helping the community to move beyond the impact of historical traumas.

As part of his presentation, Pete showed two films. Unseen Tears, a 30-minute documentary featured interviews with Native American elders and community members sharing their experiences and consequences of the residential boarding schools right here in Western New York that operated under the focus to “kill the Indian, save the person,” and the ongoing consequences of that policy. We Shall Remain was a shorter music video, and made a strong argument for how historical trauma experienced due of acts of racism has impacted future generations. Both films discussed how historical trauma from displacement, rape and

sexual assault, kidnapping of children, and genocide have negatively impacted the inter-generational health and vitality of Native American people. “Many times, these untended wounds are at the core of much of the self-inflicted pain experienced in Native America.” 2 Pete’s presentation urged those of us in the audience to educate ourselves and explore how we can support healing from these historical traumas. His presentation also hammered home what Food for the Spirit believes, which is that there is a lot of healing to do, in our relationships with each other, and also with our home here on earth.

As Earth Day takes place in the spring, a season of new beginnings, there are fresh opportunities for change sprouting up all over. In light of the season and in celebration of Earth Day, I hope we Neapolitans will embrace this year’s Summit in the Valley theme of being a Change Maker and come out of hiding to explore deeply what healing we each need to do – personally, with each other, and for our shared home, this earth. !

These days it can be hard to get out and about without feeling the effects of a veritable fermentation craze. With a booming craft beer industry, a bustling regional wine scene, a distillery right here in Naples, and various vegetal and sourdough businesses on the rise, it can feel as though #fermentation is trending faster than a Game of Thrones plot twist on a Sunday night.

But humans have fermented for millenia.

Well, humans have fermented food for millenia, though I suppose humans themselves have also fermented for, well … nevermind.

The point is, while fermentation is most often associated with alcohol production, it is technically defined as the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms. In other words, fermented foods are rotting foods. Molds working on cheeses, pH-altering bacteria in cured meats, and yeasts consuming sugars in wine-destined grape juice are all forms of fermentation.

The process, when skillfully managed, results in both delectable products we love to consume and helpful changes to our food that assist with digestion and overall gastrointestinal health. Over time humans have increased the level of control over the conditions in which fermentation occurs, improving consistency through precision and sterility.

Yet in an echo of the past, it is now common to hear conversations about wild fermentation, indigenous yeast, and, in our region, natural (watch out for this singularly exploited marketing term) wine. Is it preferable to produce the exact same, say, cabernet franc from year to year? Or alternatively, is it preferable to produce a wine that reflects everything from how wet spring was to the specific microorganisms present on the fruit during that year’s harvest? It’s enough to make one’s head spin!

Or is that just my triple-dry-hopped (listen, if neither a single nor a double hopping sufficed, is a third likely to help?) IPA? While this modern focus on an ancient practice may appear to some of us as just a trend, it would really be more aptly labeled a resurgence or “revival,” as it’s called by James Beard award-winning author and educator Sandor Katz. Katz, a self-proclaimed fermentation revivalist, will be the keynote presenter at the inaugural FLX Fermentation Festival hosted by the Cumming Nature Center this August.

The festival is a celebration of regional abundance through the art of fermentation.

The event combines hands-on science with artisan craft through lectures, demonstrations, tastings, and workshops. Katz, a self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee, and whom the New York Times calls “one of the unlikely rock stars of the American food scene,” will offer a variety of fermentation demonstrations and workshops at the Cumming Nature Center.

His books Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation, along with the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts.

The FLX Fermentation Festival will take place August 16-18, with the main event on Saturday, August 17. The festival will feature a wide array of fermentation-related businesses from across the Finger Lakes Region. The public can sample fermented meats, dairy, vegetables, grains, fruits, and more! Vendors will sample and teach about their specific products. Visitors will leave the festival having been engaged in the fruits of fermentation, empowered to try home fermentation, aware of the relationships between food and wellness, and more deeply connected to their regional food system.

Timing is Everything:

Fruition's Seed Starting Calendar for You In our gardens and in our lives, timing is everything.

And Friends, it is so easy to start seeds way too early.

My dear friend Sal and I created a planting calendar for you to help nail your timing this season! It's counter-intuitive, but plants started too early often get stressed (too little light, too few nutrients) and thus produce later and less abundantly than younger plants that are less stressed. So hold your horses, dear Friends! (See calendar for the Finger Lakes below)

Of Time and Tools The quality of your seed-starting set-up profoundly determines when you sow your seeds, as well. For example, if you have full-spectrum LED grow lights, heat mats, plenty of nutrient-rich, organic potting mix and containers as well as time to invest in potting up your transplants, you can start virtually any time you like.

Our planting calendar is still relevant, but you have much more capacity to grow healthy transplants beyond the classic season and I hope you do.

If you don't have the tools or the time, you'll only stress your plants (as well as yourself) starting seeds starting early. (It's sometimes difficult to be fully honest with ourselves, in our gardens and in life. Err on the side of you have less-quality conditions than you think.)

If you have none of the tools, I recommend only growing from seed those plants that need up to 4 weeks inside: lettuce, zinnias, basil and other quick-growing annuals.

Plants that need more than 5 weeks, like your tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and lavender, will likely be stressed in your less-than-optimum conditions. I recommend simply not growing these plants at all if this sounds like you: Spending a few dollars on plants rather than seeds will surround you much more abundance in the coming months! Fruition Seeds will have thousands of organic transplants for you at our Farm Store on Hickory Bottom Road.

Let There Be Light Let's talk about light and get ready to cringe: Here in the Northeast, even sunny south-facing windows are not enough light for your tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. Or any other vegetable! But those with lengthy indoor transplant lives will suffer the most. Again, be honest with yourself and then assume that you're still over-estimating your capacity. Stick to growing only plants that require 4 weeks indoors or less so lack of light won't dramatically decrease your abundance.

If I Planted Early, What Next?!

Don't sweat it, but do be prepared to pot up your growing transplants as often as possible. Your goal is to inspire your plant's constant growth, reducing its stress in any way possible. Perhaps counter-intuitively, the healthiest transplants are short, stout and deep green. The two most common limiting factors for seedlings are lacking light and lacking nutrients.

Welcome to a new monthly feature that will explore what goes on "behind the scenes", how things get made, how things happen right here at home!

How The Neapolitan Record gets printed

These photos were taken last fall during the printing of The Neapolitan Record for October 2018 at a division of Messenger Post Media (home of The Daily Messenger) in Canadaigua, the place where every copy of the Neapolitan has been printed, from its first issue. This follows a lineage of Naples-centric publications that have been printed on these exact same presses — including several decades of The Naples Record and a few seasons of The Naples Grapevine. This April issue is the last Neapolitan that will be printed here.

Next month, these operations move to a different location still under the Messenger-Post umbrella, but on different presses. Being the nostalgic person that I am, when I learned of this plan I requested permission to photograph the printing process within this press room. The scents and sounds and energy of printing presses summon that kind of anticipation you feel when you know magic is about to happen. What's more fun than watching blank white paper magically turn colorful, and knowing that each push through the rotating printing press cylinders is creating another copy to be shared with another set of eyes?

Each month, The Neapolitan Record's page layout is put together in a digital format on a computer by me, wearing my Graphic Designer hat. I send my finished electronic files to The Daily Messenger by uploading them to a shared online server which they provide. Once it's received on their end, they get their first glimpse of each issue.

First, all files are reviewed by Bob Burrows in Prepress. (1) Bob scans each page for any technical issues related to printing, such as making sure that all fonts are readable, color profiles are correct for 4-color printing, and that important text does not extend into margins that might get cut off during the trimming process. (He has saved my butt more than once!)

He also re-works the orientation of pages. I work on my files in numerical order (page 1, page 2, page 3, etc.); Bob re-arranges them into press sheets, also known as parent sheets. This is called 'Imposition'. Imposition determines how multiple pages get printed on the wide rolls of paper all at once, both sides. Once these parent sheets are cut and folded into a 'signature', a booklet is created that has individual pages in the correct numerical order again (But that's getting ahead of things.)

Next, Bob creates 4 metal printing plates for each parent sheet, using a computer to plate imager (2) — that is, one for each of the 4 ink colors used in offset printing: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (a.k.a. CMYK). The thin metal plates (3) have flexibility to wrap around rotating cylinders within the press, yet are sturdy enough to be used for thousands of printing impressions.

Meanwhile, the presses are prepared by Press Production Manager Tim Bugbee. Ink trays are refilled (4), paper rolls are selected and threaded into the press by hand. (5, 6, 7) These presses are used for different projects, and the paper type and size may require changing each time the press runs. Papers are sourced from mills around the world, as different mills specialize in paper attributes that a project's client might request — such as certain colors, heavier or thinner weights, or higher recycled content.

Finally, it's time to "Start the presses!" (No one actually said that on the day I visited, but the moment was no less dramatic.)

As the presses start rolling, the ink first appears in rainbow smears on the paper (8). The inks quickly find the image areas of the metal plates, and soon the colors resolve into recognizable shapes and text...

This 'Web Leader' printing press is made specifically for newspapers, with a capability to print 20,000 impressions per hour — hence the blurred photos! As soon as the first signatures are churned out, Press Operator Ed Woodhams begins intercepting samples that he and Tim check for quality control (13). How are the details looking? How are the four different ink colors registering? How saturated are each of the inks?

Tim's activity repeats multiple times for each new set of pages: grabbing an updated signature "hot off the press", studying its details, fine-tuning the settings throughout the presses (sometimes requiring special tools) — then running to grab a new sample to check the impact of his tweaks and starting his routine all over again. (9, 10, 11) The larger photo at right (12) shows the point towards the end of the press when the paper gets folded and cut into signatures. This is where both Tim and Ed grab their samples from. From here, the signatures shuffle down a conveyor belt (14) to a point where Ed stacks them into tidy bundles (15), to be transported to the next parts of the process. (16) Depending on how many pages the final product will have, these folded papers may first get collated with other signatures (sets tucked into eachother), before going through 'stitching' and 'trimming'. Due to multiple projects sharing the busy machines, I was not able to view this part of the process when I visited.

Stitching refers to stapling the pages together (some past issues of the Neapolitan have also been glued); Trimming is when the assembled booklets are cut to their final dimensions. Again, careful calibration is required to keep pages aligned, sizes and margins uniform.

The last part of the process is to wrap the finished booklets into manageable bundles, then move them on pallets towards the loading docks...

To be picked up and loaded into the back of my vehicle, and delivered — Fresh off the presses!

I would like to mention two more very important people who are involved with the crucial steps that happen just before & after printing: In preparation for each issue, Messenger Post Commercial Printing Director Brian Ambor coordinates all the scheduling for correct paper sizes & quantities (this fluctuates as the Neapolitan's page count varies each month), when & which machine processes will be required, as well as generously accomodating eleventh hour requests that may come from my end...

After the printed papers are picked up, the indomitable Dianna Massa begins delivering - sometimes she's as much of a blur as the printing presses!

used to be printed by 'hot metal printing', which involved molten lead forming the printing block. Nowadays, freshly printed pieces are still warm off the presses.

It's important for you & your family to be tick free!

Lyme disease is the most common disease spread by ticks in New York and there are other serious diseases spread by ticks as well. New York State is now among the top 5 states in the U.S. with confirmed cases of Lyme Disease (www.cdc.gov/lyme/datasurveillance/tables-recent.html) and the numbers have been increasing every year.

Protect Against and Prevent Disease Deer ticks live in shady, moist areas at ground level. They will cling to tall grass, brush & shrubs, usually no more than 18-24 inches off the ground. They also live in lawns and gardens, especially at the edges of woods & around old stone walls.

In tick-infested areas, your best protection is to avoid contact with soil, leaf litter and vegetation. However, if you garden, hike, camp, hunt, work or otherwise spend time in the outdoors, you can still protect yourself: • Wear light-colored clothing w/ a tight weave to spot ticks easily.

• Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants.

• Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors.

Once a tick gets on the skin, it generally climbs upward until it reaches a protected area.

• Consider using insect repellent.

• Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails.

Avoid dense woods and bushy areas.

• Avoid sitting directly on the ground or on stone walls.

• Keep long hair tied back, especially when gardening.

• Bathe or shower as soon as possible after going indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that may be on you.

• Do a final, full-body tick check at the end of the day (also check children and pets), and remove ticks promptly.

How to Safely Remove a Tick

1. Use a pair of pointed tweezers.

2. Grasp the tick by the head or mouth right where it enters the skin.

3. Pull firmly and steadily upward.

Don't twist or jerk the tick.

4. Dispose of a live tick by Avoid folklore remedies such as submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a "painting" the tick with nail polish sealed bag/container, or flushing it down or petroleum jelly, or using heat the toilet. Never crush it with your fingers. to make the tick detach from the 5. Clean the bite wound with rubbing skin. Your goal is to remove the alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. tick as quickly as possible – not waiting for it to detach.

6. Monitor the site of the bite for the appearance of a rash. (Please know that Lyme may still develop without ever presenting a rash) 7. If you develop a rash, fever, or other unusual symptoms within several weeks of removing a tick, see your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor when the bite occurred, and where you most likely acquired the tick.

Lyme disease and its co-infection cause many different symptoms and can present differently in each individual. DEC Trout Sampling in Naples Creek on Thursday, March 21st — (All Photos © by Vernon Iuppa) This annual event once again drew large crowds of all ages to watch the DEC check out the spring spawning run of rainbow trout from Canandaigua Lake. During this sampling process, also known as trout "shocking," an electrified wand is passed through the water, momentarily stunning the fish and bringing them to the surface where they are netted. The fish are not harmed in this catch-and-release exercise. Data is recorded for each fish: weight, length, sex, general health, and where they are in the spawning process. A scale sample is also taken to determine the age of the fish.

UpstateNY reported that, "At the end of the day, DEC staff had caught and released 57 rainbows -- the largest being a 9.1- pounder." "Overall, most of the fish were in the lower half of the stream and most of the females had not spawned yet. This would suggest that we are seeing the early stages of the spawning run," DEC said.

While I’m writing this, it is 16 degrees and still snowy in early March. At least it has been sunny and the birds are starting to sing. The geese are returning and by turning the clock forward this coming weekend, our action will lengthen my daylight time to be able to walk with Riley after work.

I must admit, Riley and I haven’t returned to the Nature Trail since February. I’m “not as young as I used to be” and can’t manage the snowy, uneven surfaces the way I could when first dog walking. But the last time Riley and I were on the trail, I did manage to take a photo of bright red rose hips of the small white wild roses common to our area.

When I first started dog walking, I enjoyed the many, many hedges of the fragrant petite rose. They tend to bloom the same time as locus trees and the June air is heavy with the sweet combination of both plants. I even gave a try at making my own rose water! In the winter, I would cut some of the rose hips to use in dried flower arrangements. A couple years ago, I noticed the hedges looked completely burned and no roses were found. I found out they had been hit by fire blight.

Since then, I have been very careful not to harvest any of the roses or rose hips that I do fine, hoping they make a comeback.

One dog I haven’t mentioned is Pugsley. He used to go trail walking with me and was so good he didn’t even need a leash. He would stand at the beginning of the trail and look at me with pleading eyes, “Come on mom” and very often I’d have to say, “no, we don’t have time today, we have to go for a short walk.” Reluctantly he’d turn and follow me around the field to home. But on days we could take a long walk, Pugsely would be in the lead with his curled tail held high and his short little legs moving right along. Pugsley passed on Feb 12 of this year of old age. He had a happy life and as George Harrison wrote, “All Things Must Pass.”

With the re-birth of Spring, Riley and I will be able to get out more, maybe the wild roses will slowly come back, and the spirits of my dogs passed will move on in a holy rebirth of their own.
