We loved the intense teal blue of the shadows and the hillside in the background, the feathery ice-covered trees glowing with light, all setting a dramatic and gorgeous stage for the fierce possibility of the hawk... Or is he also too awestruck to disrupt such a magical moment? Thank you to Amy and to all the photographers who entered the contest. This month I'm using this space to share my answer to a question that recently arrived via email:

January 19, 2019 — Is it permissible for anyone to submit an article to you for consideration or whatever, unsolicited? I often have ideas about things I'd like to read about in your publication or anywhere really, and I like to write and especially to do research and stuff. But I don't recall what guidelines have been stated if any.

The answer is: YES. The Neapolitan Record is open to submissions from anyone, about anything you would like to share. There are not strict guidelines. All submissions are considered.* I typically prefer written pieces to be approx. 300-500 words, though sometimes I can find room for longer pieces. I request that factual statements include mention of the source, or point to a way to find it. Sometimes people submit articles that fit under the category of "Opinion", which are welcomed as well. Our goal is to include all the diverse voices of our rich, vibrant community.

New Year’s Eve has come and gone and what will happen then?

We’ll promise to change our ways and different things will end.

These are called RESOLUTIONS. Some are good some are bad.

But do we stop doing things we’ve done & ruin the fun we’ve had?

Every year this situation appears, decisions must be made, so we try to improve the way the game is played.

Celebrate all the Love.

What about the other words beginning with “RES”?

Restitutions — Responsible — Resilience — Restricted — Reservations — Respect RESTITUTIONS — A legal action serving to cause restoration of a previous state. — Returning items to proper owners. (Do any officials ever think of this?)

RESPONSIBLE — Able to answer for one’s conduct and obligations. Able to choose for oneself between right and wrong. (This is too much of a logical thing to do by our elected officials.)

RESILIENCE — An ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune of change. (Will our politicians deal with this or continue to act like spoiled kids?)

RESTRICTED — Available to the use of particular groups. (If one political party has a great idea that will benefit millions, the other party will RESTRICT it because they didn’t think of it first.)

RESERVATIONS — The act of RESERVING something. (Like reserving the 50 year old way to run a country because they’ve been in office that long and not considering that some things have changed. It’s not 1950 or 60. It’s 2019.)

RESPECT — An act of giving particular attention like showing CONSIDERATION to each other, to other people’s beliefs, to show we are not always correct.

Naples Town Supervisor's Report 2019 Happy February, Naples!

We have so many things to love about Naples this month and throughout the year! First on the list is our appreciation for the opportunity to serve this community, especially given the many, many folks who do so every day without compensation and often without recognition. Before reporting recent Naples governmental accomplishments and project updates, it is important to emphasize that none of our progress could be made without the following people: Village Mayor, Town Councilmembers and Village Trustees Town and Village Clerks Highway Superintendent and Highway/DPW Personnel Code Enforcement, Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals Members Naples Community Park Foundation Members Town and Village Legal Counsel Big Green Climate Smart Committee Historian and Historical Society Our Dedicated Representatives

New Leadership: At the end of 2018 Councilmember

Frank Duserick ended a long run of effective leadership with the Town of Naples as a past Town Supervisor and Councilmember. Although his guidance and experience are greatly missed, we wish him the very best. The Town was fortunate to have several very qualified residents apply to fill a one-year vacancy for the term of the position. We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Kory Bay to the Board through the end of 2019.

Wastewater Treatment: The Village has nearly all of

the over 100 easements to begin bidding the wastewater treatment system. It will initially service Main Street in the Village. While the process may seem drawn out, it is quite a testament to our community that this has been accomplished with so much buy-in from affected property owners. The handful of remaining easements are largely being processed through religious and corporate hierarchies. The level of affordability of this system is also quite an accomplishment made possible by Naples Mayor Brian Schenk and NYS Senator Rich Funke. The next step will be letting bid documents for construction in 2019. This is the first step in a decades-long journey finally being realized!

Water System Improvements: The Town and Village

have obtained funding for upgrades to the water distribution system to replace the oldest and most susceptible portions.

This was made possible in part due to the creation of a formal water district for water customers outside the Village limits. Like the wastewater treatment, this is something that has been many, many years in the making. The project includes relocating a main transmission line from a wooded, extremely difficult to maintain area to the main highway where it can be accessed when needed. The project will also greatly reduce water loss and treatment. Included in the funding is over $500,000 in grant sources.

Highway and Public Works: The Highway and Public Works Departments account for most of our tax dollars. We are fortunate to have an excellent staff working effectively to manage this responsibility on both accounts. In 2018, the 4

Highway Department did follow-up work on the 2017 major reconstruction of 6 local roads as well as grader patching, regular maintenance and keeping our roads safe. A grant has been obtained for work to an additional road in 2019.

The Village DPW has once again done an excellent job getting up banners as well as Fall and Winter decorations – all while managing the water system, Village streets, brush, leaves and snow. A big thank you to everyone who made scarecrows, snowmen and hearts for downtown as well.

Planning and Zoning Boards: We now have one year completed with the merger of Village and Town Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. This has helped the Planning Board use a holistic approach to reviewing zoning for gateway districts. We look forward to their recommendations in 2019. We have been able to keep the Joint ZBA is fully staffed and working quite well with Village and Town applicants to facilitate new projects in Naples.

Historic Preservation: The Village and Town have

been awarded a grant for a Cultural Resource Inventory for the entire Village and portions of the Town. The Landmark Society has been contracted to conduct the inventory and is currently working on the necessary research. They have been working with the Historical Society and our Historian and will be out in the field in coming months taking photos and documenting Naples historic assets in those areas.

Surveying Historic Resources in Village & portions of Town of Naples The Landmark Society of Western New York has contracted with the Village & Town of Naples to conduct a historic resouces survey through Summer 2019. [www.landmarksociety.org]

What is a historic resources survey?

A historic resources survey is an inventory of older (generally 50+ years) buildings, sites, structures, and objects on the landscape in a community. Surveying is the process of identifying and gathering information on historic resources, including recording basic physical and historical information about a property and photogrpahing it. ** A survey is simply a way to collect information about your community. It does not commit you to creating any type of designation or historic district.**

Why a survey?

• Establish community preservation priorities & help municipalities incorporate presservation into planning • support place-making • begin the process of determining eligibility for historic designation and accompanying tax benefits

Goals for this survey:

• ID historically & architecturally significant properties, particularly opoortunities • ID preliminary boundaries for potential National Register historic distrct(s) • ID properties potentially individually eligible for National Register listing Questions? Community Park: The Foundation continues to

develop the bicycle pump track made possible by the Makepeace family. The Town is completing the property transfer of the James P. Long Park to the successful bidder. The sale was approved by the Long family-not to be confused with the Jeffery Long family-and the NYS Legislature. The proceeds will be used at the Community Park for improvements to the running track in memory of James P. Long. The park continues to be a substantial asset for our community and is very well utilized and supported by many, many groups.

Solid Waste Management: Late in October there

was a miscommunication regarding potential fees to recycle. While this has since been resolved and recycling remains cost-free at the Transfer Station, we continue to look for ways to make our community more sustainable.

New signage has been installed to help guide customers in recycling practices. A new website - www.ontariocountyrecycles.org was launched in 2018, providing excellent resources for ways to responsibly recycle.

Big Green Climate Smart Committee: The Town

and Village have appointed several local volunteers to help Naples be certified as a NYSERDA Clean Energy Community and become eligible to apply for funding through the NYSDEC Climate Smart Community grant program. They are working to identify projects and initiatives that will make Naples more environmentally conscious and sustainable.

2019 Budget: The Town tax rate was reduced from

5.43 in 2018 to 5.35/1000 of assessed valuation for 2019.

Lowered again from the 10-year average of 5.51/1000.

The Town of Naples has for years had the highest tax rate in our County as well as the highest number of rural low-to-moderate income households. The Town and Village continue to collaborate to maximize resources and efficiency and minimize expenditures. Our goal is to make Naples affordable while providing the necessary infrastructure and services to build a stronger community in which to live. We have so many positive attributes to be thankful for and build on in 2019 and beyond!

County Arts Council 2019 Members Exhibit

Sunday, Feb. 3rd through Friday, March 15th / Special Reception: Saturday, Feb. 9th 1-3pm @ Ewing Community room of the Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua

A wide variety of examples of new pieces of artwork, created by the OCAC members, will be on display in the Ewing Community Room for a six week long exhibit. Photography, drawings, needle felting, and paintings done in oils, acrylics and watercolors showcasing the creative talents of the Arts Council members, will be part of this exhibit and art sale.

An Opening Reception for this exhibit will be held on Saturday, February 9th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. where the public can meet some of the exhibiting artists, view the artwork, and enjoy some light refreshments. Refreshments will be served at the reception. Most of the artwork displayed will also be available for sale, by contacting the artists directly. The exhibit can also be viewed during regular open hours at the library through March 15th.

The Ontario County Arts Council is the largest group of artists and art enthusiasts in our area of the Finger Lakes, with over eighty local artists who are members of this non- profit organization. Local craftsperson Terry Brayman instructs a class in how to needle felt using upcycled sweaters to create mittens or fingerless gloves. Needle felting using wool roving or yarns will allow each participant to embellish their mittens or gloves to create a unique work of functional, wearable art! The upcycled wool sweaters will be provided, but if you would like to bring your own make sure it is 100% wool - washed in hot soapy water (I use washing machine on hot water) and dried in dryer. Your sweater will not be felted (and several sizes smaller) We will have materials needed to needle felt again if you have some special yarn that is wool or alpaca feel free to bring it with you.

The St. J's 5K was started as a way to involve the community in raising monies for community charities and programs while at the same time benefitting the wellness of all participants. St. Januarius Church has been very gracious in offering the use of the Church facilities for the event. All levels of fitness are welcomed: walkers, joggers, and competitive runners are all encourgaed to participate.

The 5K and Kids Fun Run are totally volunteer driven with all proceeds (after race costs) being given to community charities and programs. Thousands of dollars have been raised and given back to the community due to the outstanding support of community businesses and participation in the event from many throughout the Naples community.

Past recipients of the funds raised include: Operation Santa, The Open Cupboard and Closet, The Naples Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Naples Volunteer Fire Department, Naples School Robotics Club, the Naples Angels, the Naples High School Musical, the Gary Schenk Scholarship, the Naples’ Hospeace House, and the Naples School Student Wellness Challenge Program.

Darryl Abraham designs the print that is given to finishers in the top three places in the age divisions while Chris Abraham designs the shirt for the 5K. This is a wonderful time for the people to come together, have some fun, and raise money for the Naples’ Community. Thank you to everyone who participated in our first ever photo contest! It was a lastminute idea, inspired by the arrival in mid-January of our snowiest weather so far in Naples this winter — and the sites and the photos did not disappoint. The contest guidelines were minimal and straightforward: Photos should be taken within a 30 mile radius of Naples and participants were allowed to enter up to 5 photos.

In total, 63 photos were submitted, and choosing only one winner was not easy! (Next time we’re already thinking about having additional categories.) The winning photo (on the cover) was taken by Amy Klein of Naples. She was awarded a $50 gift certificate to the February advertiser of her choice. Shown on these two pages are our three runner-up “Honorable Mentions.” We liked the authentic local personality of each one. Additional photo entries shown throughout this issue.

Gerald (Jerry) C. Strong 1939 - 2018

Penn Yan - Gerald C. Strong, age 79, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 at his home.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, Dec. 23rd at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Bath, NY. Jerry was a member of the Benton Volunteer Fire Department, and a former member of the Penn Yan Area Ambulance Corps and the Rushville Masonic Lodge #377. He was a N.R.A. Certified Rifle Instructor. Jerry was also a member of the NYS Retired Teachers’ Association.

Jerry was active with the Boy Scouts.

He had been a Scout Leader, and served on the Council. He had received the Silver Beaver Award, an adult award for service rendered.

Jerry is survived by one daughter, Sueann Strong; one son, Roger (Suzanne) Strong; three grandchildren, Gavin, Nolan and Jaden Strong; one sister, Gail Waydelis; one brother, David (Joanne) Burley; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Linda Turner. Jerry was predeceased by his wife, Marion, in 2009.

The snowmen are coming down from their perches along Main Street and the hearts are going up, reminding passersby that it’s February and matters of the heart are close at hand. I see the heart that my family painted while we still had Madeline and I remember how empty that heart-shaped plywood was when it came into our living room. We worked our magic, though, and that heart is now beautiful and serves as a reminder of precious times gone by, evoking both happy memories and some tears.

True Love :

Black History Month & Valentine’s Day

I get really excited about Valentine’s Day. I’m a total romantic and I love that there is a day that’s all about celebrating love. There may be some date-night action for this girl, but I’m also in it for platonic connection: chocolate and cheese fondue party anyone? Valentine’s craft-making with red wine? Yes, let’s do up the red hearts, white doilies, and chocolate. And while we’re at it, can we also build some community around that Hallmark holiday? That’s what I’m talking about!

February is also rich with celebrations of black history; yet as a black woman, I celebrate “Black History Month” every month. During Kwanzaa, a winter holiday that celebrates African-American heritage and culture, we honor the principle of “Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together.” I know Naples folks prize collective work and responsibility. Consider, for example, the St. J's 5K and work parties at Fruition Seeds.

Personal health and healing – goals inherent in these events in Naples – are also important components of healthy communities. And health is perhaps nowhere more important than in love – for one another and for our community.

I moved to Naples for love. My partner has introduced me to this wonderful place, the amazing locals, phenomenal live music, beautiful land, and delicious food. And we celebrate our unique cultural differences together. We went to the opening of Marvel’s Black Panther movie last February and we make an annual tradition of eating the Seven Fishes with his family on Christmas. Yet true love, for each other and our communities, also includes holding space for pain and trauma.

An important tell about community health is whether locals show up and hold space for others who are suffering.

Holding space involves practicing empathy. The Naples School District held space for its students in 2017 as the community mourned the loss of 11 year-old Maddie (Madeline Barton). Hospeace House volunteers, through their intention to provide compassionate, comfort care for residents in the last three months of their lives, serves as yet another example of Naples folks holding space for people who are suffering.

Standing up against injustice is another way to hold space and in the black community we experience many injustices. An array of disparities exist between white and black communities. We have lower educational attainment and rates of home ownership, and nearly twice the rate of poverty and unemployment as white people. We are also at higher risk of early death and more likely to die from homicide and chronic disease.

For how we might grieve those truths and emerge whole, I look to Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel Beloved (and the 1998 film, which starred Oprah Winfrey). That fictional story weaves in real atrocities experienced by black women and families during slavery and comes to a head when Winfrey’s character, Sethe, makes a horrible decision. That choice shackles her with a life of trauma. Meanwhile, another character, Baby Suggs, sees that trauma and supports Sethe’s healing.

Baby Suggs assembles the community and in a striking scene she stands on a rock, black folks gathered all around her, and orchestrates a collective wailing. Sethe is not the only one in pain and Suggs urges the community to release their suffering and their heart-wrenching, aching rage, through tears and screams. This scene exemplifies black love, acknowledging the rage that black women and families may feel because of slavery and the disparities that persist today. That scene exemplifies holding space for rage through witnessing and deep empathy.

Although that story is fictional and from the past, many atrocities that are real continue today. Black women, and girls specifically, experience injustices that stifle our sense of power and confidence and cause continued trauma. According to research, we experience higher rates of sexual violence than women of other races, and more psychological abuse—including humiliation and coercive control.

In January 2019, four middle school girls in Binghamton NY were traumatized when school administrators had them remove their clothing in front of them. Local and national organizations have stepped up: calling for an end to stripsearching of children; demanding that the assistant principal, principal, and nurse who administered the searches (CONTINUED ON PAGE 20) February 2019 • No. 41 • THE NEAPOLITAN RECORD

Open Arms Yoga celebrates 15 years in Naples By Jodi Simons Caruso This past January 2019 marked 15 years that Open Arms Yoga has been offering yoga classes and wellness events to the Naples community. 15 years ago I put an ad in the local paper, the Naples Record, run by Mike Morgan Hose building at sunrise, as viewed from the from the entry to and Margaret Fowler. I hung Open Arms Yoga on Mill St., Naples flyers around town. I put my teacher certification on the (Photo by Jodi Simons Caruso) wall at my studio, ordered props, shined the floor, and waited with great anticipation to see who would come to yoga class that first Tuesday morning on Rt. 21 South.

I couldn’t have planned for a better first student to walk through the door. She came in smiling, exclaiming her delight with her bracelets jingling. Sue Cook was my first yoga student in Naples New York. She told me that my place was lovely and she was so thrilled to meet me and to be here. Even though I was Sue Cook’s Yoga Teacher she taught me much more about life.

She was a woman of strong faith, vivacious laughter, and of deep love. Her generosity, her unwavering support of spirit, and her undying faith was and is such an inspiration to me. Sue helped me welcome each additional person into the studio and before we knew it we had a class of 14 people in that first yoga class. We laughed, we stretched, we strengthened and then we all relaxed in Savasana. I had the biggest smile on my face, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.

be dismissed; and gathering support to ensure that the girls recover from the experience.

Although an important step in love is witnessing the pain and rage that traumatized people experience, we must also rectify injustices in the world. Black folks have many reasons to be angry. And we need local communities to love us by holding space for our traumatic experiences through real empathy and justice to rectify systemic wrongs.

Despite our differences, my partner and I are learning to support each other in our own home. Or perhaps it is because we celebrate those differences that we love each other.

Similar opportunities to celebrate and embrace our differences exist across the United States.

I am happy to be in Naples where we have community events that offer opportunities to get to know each other: Vintage Vines Valentines and NordicFest are just two I hope to attend in February. I’m also curious how our community honors black culture and contributions, especially during Black History Month, and I hope to join those celebrations, as well.

So how are you celebrating Black History Month this February? Are you holding space for others and showing up 20

Every single student that has walked through the doors has made an impression on my heart. Many of them have passed away. Some of them have struggled through their own grieving, illnesses, and growth but have continued to meet themselves on the mat week after week and year after year in healing and in self-awareness. We have laughed together, cried together, sometimes cursed, and have encouraged growth along the way.

In the last 15 years I have brought many practitioners to Open Arms Yoga - I honor every healing practitioner, intuitive, Yoga Teacher, Tai Chi teacher, belly dancer teacher, dance teacher, massage therapist, acupuncturist, and more that have come in to share the space offering different healing paths and perspectives.

My goal 15 years ago was to create a sacred and safe place for people to be themselves and to receive what they need to heal, to move forward, to strengthen, and to find that place in themselves that is full of peace, knowing and contentment. I have watched so many students come in broken and find themselves on the mat. I myself have healed through major illnesses and chronic pain through my yoga practice. I am passionate about the human body, about giving the knowledge that I have received through my teacher and passing that to each of you.

You have a choice every day to make your life and the lives of the people around you joyous, to lift each other up towards the light and to create a world that is better. What we leave behind is our imprint on the hearts and lives of other people. I pray for another 15 years of yoga with all of you beautiful people holding our lights up high illuminating the path of truth, honesty and peace. I have enjoyed every class every laugh, every tear, and each and everyone of you!!! Remember that YOU are one of a kind and I am so honored to have met you!

Cheers to the students that no longer come, to the students that have moved away, to the students that have passed, to the students still here on the mat each week, to my family, to my friends, and to everyone that has helped Open Arms Yoga become what it is today and to keep the doors open for 15 years. I love you.

KT: Where are you from, where did you grow up?

JA: I grew up in Syracuse & DeKalb Junction. My parents had divorced and I lived between with both of them.

I just learned that your aunt and uncle have lived in Naples for eight years now — How did you decide to move to Bloomfield?

My daughter and I moved to Bloomfield from Connecticut where I owned my first tattoo shop. Having family in Syracuse, Rochester, Victor and Naples, we settled on Bloomfield after falling in love with the area.

Was being a tattoo artist something you had an interest in early on, or did you explore other types of art first?

In 1999 I got my first tattoo and was absolutely amazed at the process. By 2000 I had started a formal apprenticeship in Syracuse that refined any artistic talent I had in high school.

You work in other mediums to create your designs. What is the transition like, moving from mediums such as watercolor on paper to tattooing a person (so to speak)?

I like to paint watercolor as an alternative medium. The process of laying colors can be done very similarly to that in tattooing. It also gives me the ability to paint a large piece and have a finished art more quickly than a large scale tattoo.

How did you first practice working in the tattoo medium?

Most people start to practice on fruit.

I started tattooing grapefruit!

Do you find that there are unique tattoo trends in different regions?

Does a place tend to influence the designs?

I enjoy tattooing in the Finger Lakes.

The people have been very nice and open to new ideas.

What have you experienced to be the average age range of people who get tattoos?

The age of most tattoo clients can range from 18-80, really. I have tattooed a 74-year-old gentleman.

Is there advice you recommend to people to prepare for a tattoo?

My advice to people new to tattoos is don’t go your appointment with children or a large crowd. It’s meant to be more of a one on one experience, even “a” friend or family member for support. But large crowds can be the nicest people ever and still be disruptive to the process even unintentionally.

Can you describe one of the coolest tattoos you've ever created?

I really enjoy large custom pieces I can design from start to finish on someone.

Naples Historical Society keeps busy through the winter It's Baaacck!!! The Fleischman Family Organ, restored by Parsons Organ Builders Friday, January 18th @ Morgan Hose Building, Mill St., Naples — Just a few hours before the most dramatic snowstorm so far this season, Cal Parsons and Bernie Talty of Parsons Organ Builders delivered the newly restored c.1910 Beckwith reed organ. The organ was donated to the NHS by Earl and Mildred Fleischman in 1978. The Herman and Rose Fleischman family had this organ brought to Naples by horse and wagon for use in their home.

NHS Board Member Trish Lambiase, also an accomplished organist, spearheaded the effort to have the organ repaired. She contacted Parsons Pipe Organ Builders from Bristol, NY and asked if they could help. She explained that the Historical Society has very limited funds and, amazingly enough, Cal Parsons offered to donate his time and the supplies needed to repair the organ! Thank you very much to Cal Parsons and Bernie Talty for your extraordinary kindness and generosity!

Watch for a future story about the history of this organ, the renovation process, and announcement of a live organ concert given by Trish Lambiase later this year.

Not So Fantastic Plastic

Plastic is a ubiquitous material that touches just about every facet of our lives bringing convenience while confounding efforts at sustainability.

NYS Plastic Bag Ban During Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent State of the State address, he announced that he is advancing legislation to expand New York's Bottle Bill to make most non-alcoholic drink containers eligible for 5 cent redemption; and he will also advance legislation to ban all single-use plastic bags (SUB's) at any point of sale in NYS. The NYS Plastic Bag task force was launched by the governor in 2017 to study and develop a plan to address the use and disposal of plastic. Led by NYS DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos, along with co-chairs Senator Thomas O’Mara and Assemblyman Steve Engelbright, the Task Force conducted a survey of existing plastic bag laws in more than a dozen NYS municipalities and received 588 responses during the public comment period between March and December 2017.

Following the Task Force recommendations, the Governor introduced a Program Bill last year to prohibit businesses from providing plastic carryout bags to customers. In addition to a ban on SUB’s at any point of sale, the bill would provide the DEC with jurisdiction over all matters concerning plastic bags and film plastic recycling. The bill exempts garment bags, trash bags, and any bags used to wrap or contain certain foods, such as fruits and sliced meats. The state would also conduct an education and awareness campaign to raise consumer awareness and promote reusable bags.

Plastic Politics

Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic is an award winning 2010 American documentary film that takes an in-depth look at plastic bags and other plastic consumer merchandise and exposes their effects on the landscape, marine life, and human health. The Bag It website is a primer for examining the complex issues involved with our plastic consumption.

“In the United States alone, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is used annually to make the plastic bags that Americans consume. These bags, even when properly disposed of, are easily windblown and often wind up in waterways or on the landscape, becoming eyesores and degrading soil and water quality as they break down into toxic bits. Their manufacture, transportation and disposal require large quantities of non-renewable resources and release equally large amounts of global-warming gases.

Towns all over the United States are rising to the challenge and standing up to the oil, gas and plastic industries. Seattle fought a hard fight to place a fee on single-use disposable plastic AND paper bags, only to be shut down by the American Chemistry Council, a group that profits greatly from the production of plastic bags. Recently, Seattle successfully passed an ordinance that would ban plastic bags and place a small charge on paper bags. The plastic industry and their lobbying groups spend millions annually to combat anti-plastic bag campaigns across the country.”

Single-Use Disposables and Environment

Plastic bottles, jars, coffee cups, utensils, take-out containers... Plastic is not disposable and the use of these items leads to environmental degradation. When the plastics break down, they do not biodegrade. Instead they break down into fragments that contaminate our natural resources.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area of the Pacific Ocean created by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. It's a plastic soup (estimated by scientists to be at least twice the size of Texas) that in some areas has concentrations of plastic 40 times greater than that of plankton. That means there is 40 times more plastic than food for the marine animals to eat.

80% of the plastic and trash that finds its way into our oceans comes from the land. It takes about five years for garbage from the west coast of the United States to make it to the gyre. Plastic debris in the ocean then photodegrades, meaning sunlight and water break it down to smaller and smaller pieces that are mistaken for food by fish, sea birds and marine mammals.

Recent studies have estimated that by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. Increasing amounts of plastic have already been found within the seafood eaten by people on a regular basis. In 2014, a study by Ghent University in Belgium found that people who regularly eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic each year. Another study by Plymouth University found that one-third of all fish caught in the United Kingdom contained tiny pieces of plastic.

Health

We often trust the conveniences in our lives to be fairly benign; however there are some dangers associated with two common chemical additives to plastic.

Bisphenol A (BPA), which makes plastic hard, and phthalates, which make plastic soft, are two known endocrine disruptors.

We come into contact regularly with them through our food, our cosmetic products, and plastic containers. BPA acts like estrogen and studies have linked it to a host of maladies including cancer, hyperactivity, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Phthalates are an oily substance also used in cosmetics and perfumes and is often labeled in household products as “fragrance”. Low levels of phthalates have been linked to infertility.

Robin says, "I don't know what kind of fungi/mushroom they are, but this summer and fall, while walking my dog in the woods near my home, I discovered an amazing variety of fungi, all colors and shapes, and began taking photos of them with my i-phone. I don't even touch them, but found they were a relaxing reason to walk in the woods.

2 weeks ago, I took my dog walking in the same woods; and first noticed the beautiful, brilliantly green, moss that didn't look like the cold or previous snow had even effected; and I found these mushrooms sort of protected by a dead stump.

I think it is unusual to see these during the winter. I spotted others, but they were usually crushed and discolored.

The Ontario County Lyme Disease Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8pm at the Canandaigua Fire Hall, 335 S. Main St., Canandaigua.

The group's mission is to provide support (through education & sharing) with the physical and emotional impact on people and families affected by Lyme and tick borne diseases.

Who wants to talk about Lyme?

Not exactly a dinner conversation starter but it is an important topic to bring up.

Why? According to the CDC there are at least 300,000 new people diagnosed with Lyme in the U.S. every year (and there are many reasons to suspect that the numbers of infections are actually even higher). Within those numbers, New York State now has the dubious honor of being among the top 5 states in the U.S. with confirmed cases of Lyme Disease1, and the numbers have been increasing every year. Alarmingly, the official numbers are expected to only grow and we are now seeing it show up in our own community, perhaps your own family. Some of you may know someone personally or have yourself, been diagnosed with Lyme.

So what is Lyme? Lyme is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through tick bites.

As the tick bites its hosts, a bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, enters the host's body through the transmission of saliva. The Borrelia bacteria is a "spirochete" class of bacteria that has the shape of a cork screw and is very similar to the syphilis spirochete bacteria. Its shape and mobility makes it hard for your immune system to grapple with while allowing it to move around your body looking for areas to inhabit and reproduce. Think of them as little drill bits that can burrow around your body.

The Lyme bacterial infection is known to cause several unpleasant symptoms and dangerous long term health issues. Unfortunately, further understanding gets complicated with much debate as to how long a tick needs to be attached to pass the bacteria, and then correctly diagnosing for Lyme infection, treatment and recovery. There is confusion and debate within both the patient and medical communities, leaving the Lyme sufferer to navigate this uncertainty for themselves.

Some good online sources of information and communities for learning and sharing are www.Lymedisease.org, the Lyme Disease Association (www.lymediseaseassociation.org) and Facebook Lyme support groups.

Locally, we also have the Ontario County Lyme Disease Support Group, which recently hosted NYS Senator Pam Helming (R-54th District) at their regular monthly meeting at the Canandaigua Fire Hall. Senator Helming is on the NYS Senate Task Force on Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases2 and came to the meeting to hear concerns and personal stories as well as to answer questions and inform attendees of any strides NYS has made in regards to Lyme disease. The January 16th meeting was well attended by over 30 people from both inside and outside of Ontario County, from as far as Webster and Naples and the city of Rochester. The group included people who have Lyme disease, their caretakers, loved ones and advocates.

Attendees were invited to share their own stories about their experiences with Lyme disease and how it has affected their lives. Most stories conveyed frustration with the lack of support available from conventional medical care. A common theme in people's stories was the need for patients to educate themselves beyond a layman's understanding of the biology of Lyme, so that they are able to seek their own solutions for healing. That in itself becomes a time-consuming and tiring exercise.

Senator Helming listened to several stories from people of all ages (the majority being about young people), and then explained why she has limited power to be of assistance.

She offered a few other ideas: Lyme sufferers could try pursuing partnerships with families with high name profiles and who are interested in the health of our community, such as the Golisanos, the Sands or the Wegmans. Or, to help manage the lack of insurance coverage, Lyme sufferers could appeal to organizations such as Catholic Charities, or the local Kiwanis Club. There was also a pamphlet that her committee had put together, with assistance from the group, that will be going into county health agency offices and the like.

We’d like to bring this growing health threat to the attention of our community and continue to share information as it becomes available to us. Spring will be here before we know it and with it come ticks. The threat of Lyme is reality now and all of us who love enjoying the outdoors will be exposing ourselves to the threat of Lyme infection.

Essential Seed Vocab Demystified

By Petra Page-Mann I fondly recall long winter evenings as a child by the fireside in South Bristol, pouring tea and steeping with seed catalogs, dreaming about the season ahead. I wish I could go back to the couch and snuggle up with my seven-year-old self and ask her some questions. How would my seven-year-old self describe the difference between an OP, heirloom, Hybrid and GMO tomato?

Fast-forward: In hopes of demystifying the (deceptively) simple vocabulary found in seed catalogs, I’ve written you such a glossary now, with the full story on our blog at www.myfruitionseeds.com. I'll share two with you here!

So put on the kettle, snuggle up (with your seven-year-old, if you've got one!) and let's dream about the abundance ahead for this and for all generations to come.

'Heirloom' or 'Heritage' Seeds

Technically, an 'heirloom' or 'heritage' variety is simply an open-pollinated variety (also defined in the blog) that has been saved for more than fifty years. To broaden the term, heirloom varieties often have great cultural significance to particular people and particular place, sharing much more of a story than any fifty-year timespan.

Advantage: If you love story, cultural connection and flavor, heirloom varieties are holy grails unto themselves. Also, new OP varieties are like new books, new songs: They're constantly being dreamed into existence and, done well, they'll become classic heirlooms one day. (Fruition Seeds is both preserving the heirlooms of the past as well as crafting the heirlooms of the future, like our new watermelon August Ambrosia and our new carrot Dulcinea!)

Disadvantage: As open-pollinated varieties, heirlooms require selection to maintain relatively uniform expression as well as genetic diversity. As seed has moved from a commons to a commodity, this selection work has been largely neglected for many decades. As a result, many heirlooms are not as productive or uniform as they could be, though companies like Fruition are actively selecting for both diversity and productivity for their bioregion.

'Days to Maturity'

'Days to Maturity' (DTM) helps us know when to expect our harvest. The number refers to the days you'll most likely wait after a seed or transplant is planted in your garden until you are harvesting it.

In the case of direct-sown lettuce, '52 days' refers to days you'll wait after sowing its seed in the soil. In the case of tomatoes and other plants that must be transplanted, DTM refers to the days you'll wait after transplanting that seedling into your garden, rather than when you started them indoors.

There are many factors involved, from fertility to Zone to heat units to planting date. Choosing varieties produced by seed companies closer to you will give you a more accurate DTM than purchasing from companies in another bioregion.

Advantage: DTM is a great way to compare between varieties. It can also help make your harvests more continuous with little extra effort: For example, sowing dwarf (52 DTM) and full-size peas (64 DTM) on the same day is a pretty genius way to use DTM to plan for abundance :) Disadvantage: There are just SO many variables, Friends!

While DTM is invaluable, it just won't give you a precise prediction of harvest dates. Don't expect DTM to be totally accurate and you'll be a much happier gardener.

Dog walking brought my awareness to the earth under our feet

By Kate Aghaghiri I used to exercise. I went to aerobics, weight training, hiking, and all that active good stuff. Then life got in the way with kids and a full time career and now I hate it when my heart beats too fast and I get out of breath.

What does get me off the couch, however, is walking my dog.

I volunteer for a dog rescue and, over time, have adopted three from the organization.

There is NOTHING that gives me greater pleasure than seeing my dogs happy — and walking in the woods makes them very happy!

This column isn’t only about dog walking…it’s about what I observe around me when I’m walking. When I started all this in 2006 with my first two Pugs, I kept notes on a calendar of the weather and what I saw in nature. Then, I started taking a wildflower identification book with me. And now, I’m studying herbalism.

To bring you up to the present, my two Pugs have passed and my third is too old, but I have a very happy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Riley, who lived his entire first 6 years in a cage in a puppy mill. Now he is one of the happiest dogs alive and I am getting some exercise. Win/win.

Early January 2019 has, sadly at the time of this writing, produced no snow. But Riley and I have observed in the woods near our house, wild chives growing. Maybe they still grow under the snow but for now they are right out in the open. In 2006, I first observed them in March, and I decided someone had planted them nearby and they took off out of the garden. I learned since that they are wild and natural.

All chives, wild or intentionally planted, are loaded with vitamins and minerals and have been found to contain antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.

Maybe you can get out there and find some to sprinkle on your baked potato with sour cream. If you plan to harvest and cook with wild chives, make sure to use official plant identification resources, only pick 1/3 of what you find, and make sure the area is far enough away from road pollution and pesticide use.

If you have antifreeze in your garage or your car leaks antifreeze fluid, be sure your dog can’t lick it. Antifreeze tastes sweet and dogs are attracted to it so keep it out of your dog’s reach.
