"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers.

You will always find people who are helping.' "

One of the challenges I set for myself with each issue is to try arranging the content to follow sort of a flow... Summer suggested certain themes to plan for, but there is never certainty because the submissions are always a surprise (which is actually the best part!). More often than not, the themes overlap or submissions fit more than one category. Yet some ideas resonate through multiple voices, as if we are all on the same page.

Month after month, Naples proves itself to be a place where the people and the presence of nature have the power to "heal what ails." I will leave that as a loose definition, because there are too many "ailments" to describe in our modern world. If I had to choose one theme for this issue, I'd call it all "Community that Cares."

Thank you to everyone who is a part of this issue. Have a great summer, Naples — Get out there and enjoy the non-stop pushing, swirling, glowing energy of summer in Naples, so perfectly depicted in Kit's painting above.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Hello Neapolitans, we hope your spring has been well and your summer will be! This is our periodic update on local municipal activities.

NAPLES TOWN • Construction engineering is comOFFICE plete for the expandable, modular 106 S. • Main Street tree replacements are doing well this year and add nicely to our downtown appeal.

• Ontario County Public Works has completed reconstruction of County Rd. 36 at the top of Winecellar Hill. The road was moved to the south to ensure stabilization along the ravine over Grimes Glen. Thank you for everyone’s patience during this process.

• The Town and Village have both applied to several agencies for distribution upgrades for the water system.

The Town portion of the project has been awarded funding and we await determinations on the Village portion of the project.

• The Town and Village worked together to combine the Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals in January, 2018.

This has increased efficiency for both Boards. The Planning Board is working with the Ontario County Planning Department to develop a proposed Town\Village mixed Commercial & Residential Zoning District.

• With the assistance of the Ontario County Planning Department, the Town and Village have applied to the Preservation League of NYS for a cultural resources survey. The area covered is the entire Village and adjacent areas identified for a potential future sewer district in the Town. The survey is also a step towards establishing an historic district as identified as an implementation measure in the Joint Comprehensive Plan. One of the benefits of an historic district is eligibility for rehabilitation tax credits for homeowners and commercial properties.

• The wind farm proposed by Baron Winds LLC in the Towns of Cohocton, Avoca, Dansville, Fremont, Howard and Wayland is under review by the NYS Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment. The Town of Naples has been involved in the planning process.

• We continue to seek out opportunities to provide high speed internet service to our underserved areas of the Town.

• The Town and Village continue to be involved in the Ontario County Shared Services Panel open to (CONTUINUED ON PAGE 12) July/August 2018 • No. 35 • THE NEAPOLITAN RECORD

Originally there were plans to include a map of Naples in this summer issue. However, due to lack of interest, work on the map was put on hold.

It's too much work to highlight only a few locations.

But stay tuned, I'm not giving up on the idea yet!

Opening Reception for Exhibit: Portrait & Landscape Artist Nancy Lane

Tuesday, July 10th 6-8pm @ Naples Library, 118 S. Main St. One of the Canandaigua area’s most accomplished artists, whose painting won the top award in the Rochester Art Club’s highly competitive Fall Member Exhibition in 2017, will exhibit her original artwork at a Naples Library exhibition.

Nancy Lane has been a professional picture book illustrator for 30 years.

Her illustration work has been published in more than 23 children’s books by multiple publishers and was featured in a Wood Library exhibition in 2011. But this latest show displays a different side of Lane’s work, her fine art paintings of landscapes and portraits. She has studied painting with nationally renowned artists since 2013 to further her skills in plein air painting and portraiture.

Lane was recently awarded signature member status in the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters. “My choice to work directly from life, whether it be painting landscapes on site outdoors, or painting a portrait while looking at a live sitter, has been the latest focus of my career as a professional artist,” Lane said. Last November, this new aspect to her career won recognition from the prestigious Rochester Art Club, of which she is a signature member, with three paintings juried in to the club’s fall member exhibition. Lane’s painting titled “The Journey,” a magical narrative piece, won best in show, the show’s highest honor.

The Naples Library show will be on display through July 14th in the lower floor Community Room. Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is invited to an opening reception for the show on Tuesday, July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. The show will feature Lane’s recent paintings in oil and watercolor, as well as charcoal drawings. Many of the landscape scenes are from the Canandaigua Lake area.

Besides her fine art and illustration work, Lane teaches private art lessons at her home, and conducts a September-May watercolor class at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery in Canandaigua. Her work can be found on the web at nancylanestudio.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/NancyLaneStudio.

Lane is a native of Penfield and attended Webster schools before studying art at Rochester Institute of Technology, the Parsons School of Design in New York City, and the Maryland Institute, College of Art, from which she graduated. She and her husband live in Bristol and have two grown children.

2018 RRLC Breakthru Grant Winner: Naples Library!

A Sense of Place: Nature Journalling in the Age of Climate Change Naples Library has been awarded an RRLC (Rochester Regional Library Council) Breakthru Grant for the project "A Sense of Place: Nature Journaling in the Age of Climate Change," created with Angela Cannon-Crothers, naturalist, writer and educator. Congratulations to the Library and to Director Judy Schewe!

The project's goal is to help community members of all ages build personal connections with the natural world through the use of nature journaling, observation, data collection, and participation in online citizen science programs that track seasonal migrations, plant budding, and other cycles related to climate. This project also includes the purchase of a nature and environment library collection, and will feature a Nature Writer of the Month; Readings and Book Discussion programming throughout the year.

"Nature journaling is good for our health and our spirit.

Its methods combine quiet focus with outdoor experiences, utilizing creative expression in both writing and art. Journaling is a tool for detailing our observations of the world around us while reflecting on our place within it," says Cannon-Crothers.

Cannon-Crothers, who has been teaching nature writing and journaling for over a decade, says she "loves the idea of helping libraries connect patrons of all ages to nearby natural areas, nature centers, and local parks." She is especially looking forward to the environmental literacy components of the Readings and Book Discussions on nature writers and environmentalists.

Look for more information at the end of the summer announcing the free journaling events and book talks beginning in September.

RRLC particularly liked the collaborative aspects of this project and its potential to develop curriculum and program models that may be adopted by other libraries. RRLC Executive Director Laura Osterhout says, "We are also pleased to fund a grant that endeavors to put people back in touch with nature, which is increasingly difficult in our fast-paced world driven by technology."

Schewe believes that the stone piles were created by a culture that lived in this area before the time of the Sonontouan (or "Seneca",) people that call this area their birthplace. His hope is that others will find this topic interesting and will want to learn more about working to preserve these ancient artifacts.

Written by Christian O'Reilly, Chapatti is the moving story of two lonely animal lovers.

When forlorn Dan and his dog Chapatti meet the affable Betty and her nineteen cats, an unexpected spark begins a funny and poignant story about two people who had all but given up on love, and their journey to re-discovering the importance of human companionship.

The cast features Bristol Valley Theater Executive Artistic Director Karin Bowersock as Betty and long-time BVT fan-favorite Mark Poppleton as Dan. Karin and Mark previously appeared as co-stars on the BVT stage in the 2015 production of Becky's New Car, but their friendship and collaboration began nearly three decades ago, when they met and started creating theater together while living in New York City.

“Working with Mark is always a pleasure,” Says Bowersock. “It's so comforting, especially in a challenging play like Chapatti, to know that you can lean on your acting partner. And with the long friendship that Mark and I have shared it makes the process so fulfilling!” The creative team consists of director Suzi Takahashi, scenic designer G. Warren Stiles, lighting designer Greg Solomon, costume designer Liz Porter Woods, and sound designer and composer Brandon Reed.

Susan B. Anthony, a resident of Rochester, traveled extensively in support of women's suffrage, giving as many as 75 to 100 speeches per year and working on many state campaigns. She worked internationally for women's rights, playing a key role in creating the International Council of Women, which is still active.

She was famously tried and convicted of illegally voting. The trial took place at our Onatario County Courthouse. Susan B. Anthony's life-long efforts on behalf of women's suffrage were a key factor in the successful passing of the 19th ammendment to the Consitution, which gave American women the right to vote in every state, in 1920.

Sherie Heins, Hospeace House Volunteer Coordinator

It is finally time…Hospeace House makes history this summer when the doors officially open as a comfort care home!

In June we welcomed Sherie Heins who will fulfill the role of Volunteer Coordinator – a perfect fit for all. A lifelong resident of Naples, Sherie has had experience working with volunteers through various school, church, and civic organizations. Her 20+ years in marketing and about that many years in commercial kitchens are an added plus. Her love of hospice care dates back to 2000 when her first husband faced a cancer journey and had the help of hospice volunteers to complete that journey at home. She is currently employed

by Trinity Federated Church of Naples in an office admin capacity and as the keyboard player. She and her husband Mike have four adult children between them as well as five grandchildren and precious memories of one Angel grandchild. Sherie has hit the ground running, the following is a portion of her letter to the community:

"A sizeable list of volunteers who have completed their training is in place, and the doors are set to open on July 23. During the nine days from July 23 to August 1st, the volunteers will be covering their time slots to complete all of those last-minute things that this type of undertaking demands. August 1st we will be ready to accept its first guest at this beautiful comfort care home!

Despite this good news, the very real fact is that many more volunteers are needed. Could this be a perfect opportunity for you? It won’t take huge amounts of time; after six hours of training, the time commitment could be as little as one four-hour shift a month. It doesn’t demand medical skill sets. Perhaps you can sit quietly with someone and extend a hand to hold. Perhaps you could help prepare a meal, or read to a resident, or simply share some quiet time. It doesn’t demand “being strong.” The passing of a family's loved one is an emotional time and emotions will be evident. That’s ok. Comfort care volunteers are drawn to this for different reasons, but all share a common desire – to be of service and help others at this precious time of life."

Sunday, July 16th, St. Jan’s will be having a Summer Ice Cream Social to celebrate the presence of our summer parishioners and to offer a warm hello to our new priest, Father Jorge Ramirez.

On June 24, Father Felicijan Sierotowicz, known as Father Felix celebrated his final mass at St. Jan’s. Father Felix asks us to “Remember that the greatest thing is love God.” We thank him so much for his service to us & we will very much miss him.

Ulla Persson 1930 - 2018

Larry D. Wigden 1955-2018

Ulla Margareta Persson, 87, died Sunday, May 13th at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, after a long illness, surrounded by her family.

She leaves behind her sons Carl (married to Jill) and John Peter, and also grandchildren Dylan, Kyle, Erik and Annika.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret, in September of 2016.

Ulla was born to Ake and Hilda Oquist, in Stockholm Sweden on December 18th, 1930, the youngest of 3 children. She was interested in art at an early age and was proud of the fact that she was accepted into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm as a teenager, although she was not able to attend. She emigrated from Sweden and came to the United States in 1958. She arrived on the MS Kungsholm in March of 1958 and joined her husband Sten Persson in Rochester, NY. They lived in several cities across the US before settling in Naples, NY in 1966.

She raised her 3 children in Naples and was well know in the community.

In 1977 she opened the Brown House Gallery as an art Gallery and artist supply store. She ran the Brown house for many years until it closed at the end of 2013.

She was known for her positive outlook on life and enjoyed the time she spent sitting on the front porch of the Brown House, talking with people and telling stories.

A memorial service was held June 16th at Trinity Federated Church in Naples, followed by a light lunch and fellowship at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Naples Ambulance Squad or the Trinity Federate Church.

"The LORD called Larry D. Wigden home on Saturday May 26th, at the age of 62. Known by many as Pastor Larry Wigden, he served the LORD for the past 38 years at Italy Naples Baptist Church in Naples, NY. Born in Penn Yan to David and Norma (Switzer) Wigden, Larry spent his life closely following his Father's lead.

Larry is survived by his mother Norma Wigden, brothers David (Terri) Wigden, Garry (Candace) Wigden, and Dale Wigden, sisters Connie (Kenneth) Foster and Karen (Eugen) Baer, many nephews and nieces, as well as countless family and friends who experienced the power of God's love through his commitment in their lives.

Larry graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1973 and went on to study at Baptist Bible College where he graduated in 1977 with a degree in Theology. He will be remembered as a gifted preacher and teacher of the Word who fearlessly poured truth into the lives of those around him. His sense of humor brought joy even in the hardest times, and his devotion to others made him feel like family to many. On long walks, at ball games and concerts, on bus trips, at weddings and funerals, at all his usual spots in town, and on trips to new places we all learned to love Larry and appreciate his presence in our lives. We can be certain that the first words he heard the LORD say as he entered heaven are "Well done, good and faithful servant."

It's important for you & your family to be tick free!

[Editor's Note: This information repeated by popular request]

Ticks can spread disease. Not all ticks can cause disease and not all bites will make you sick, but as these diseases become more common it's important to learn how to prevent a bite, how to remove a tick and what to do if you think you could have a tick-borne disease. Lyme disease is the most common disease spread by ticks in New York but there are other serious diseases spread by ticks. And like Lyme, the other diseases will begin to spread to other regions across the state.

Protect Against and Prevent Disease

Deer ticks live in shady, moist areas at ground level. They will cling to tall grass, brush & shrubs, usually no more than 18-24 inches off the ground. They also live in lawns and gardens, especially at the edges of woods & around old stone walls.

In tick-infested areas, your best protection is to avoid contact with soil, leaf litter and vegetation. However, if you garden, hike, camp, hunt, work or otherwise spend time in the outdoors, you can still protect yourself: • Wear light-colored clothing w/ a tight weave to spot ticks easily.

• Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants.

• Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors. Once a tick gets on the skin, it generally climbs upward until it reaches a protected area.

• Consider using insect repellent.

• Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas.

• Avoid sitting directly on the ground or on stone walls.

• Keep long hair tied back, especially when gardening.

• Bathe or shower as soon as possible after going indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that may be on you.

• Do a final, full-body tick check at the end of the day (also check children and pets), and remove ticks promptly.

How to Safely Remove a Tick 1. Use a pair of pointed tweezers.

2. Grasp the tick by the head or mouth right where it enters the skin.

3. Pull firmly and steadily upward.

Don't twist or jerk the tick.

4. Dispose of a live tick by submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush it with your fingers.

5. Clean the bite wound with rubbing alconhol or hydrogen peroxide.

6. Monitor the site of the bite for the next 30 days for the appearance of a rash.

7. If you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick, see your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor when the bite occurred, and where you most likely acquired the tick.

The Naples VFW Post 8726 recently invited me to stop by for a Thursday night dinner, and to meet their Commander, Jim Rung. Jim wants to get the word out about what the VFW offers to the community, and most importantly, what the VFW offers for vets: a place where they can talk to others after military service. Jim says, “Only someone who has been through it will understand. We've been there, done that — We can answer the questions that others can't."

As he and I started to talk, I realized we had met before: I interviewed Jim as a member of the Naples Volunteer Fire Dept. (NVFD) a few years ago (The Neapolitan Record, No. 16, December 2016). This time I got to hear a little more of his story.

Jim grew up on a dairy farm in Sardinia, NY, southeast of Buffalo, one of 6 brothers. He began his long career of service to help people by volunteering for an ambulance squad and going through EMT training. In the early 1970s, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for active duty providing combat support transportation. After his tour of service was complete, he enrolled in Boces classes back home to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), while also driving tractor-trailer driver and volunteering for the Yorkshire Fire Department.

By the 1980s, Jim was full-time staff at the Buffalo V.A. Cardiac Unit. After twelve years away from the military, enrolled in the Reserves in the late 1980s. His unit was activated for Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and he was permitted a leave of absence from the V.A. When he returned home again after this combat experience, he felt even more helpful to peers at the V.A. whose unique experiences he could understand.

Jim met his future wife, Jodi, as a fellow FEMA volunteer in Watertown during the Upstate NY Ice Storm of 1998. He transferred to the Canandaigua V.A., where Jodi also worked, the couple married, and have lived in Naples ever since. He first joined the VFW in 1991 in Arcade, NY; then transferred to the Naples post in 2006 after someone spotted his “Desert Storm” hat while he was helping with the installation of the 911 Memorial in Naples (as a NVFD member). Jim finally retired from the V.A. in 2013 after 30 years, and now works two days a week as part of the maintenance crew at Reservoir Creek Golf Course.

Jim Rung is now in his second year as Post Commander, nominated and elected to the position by fellow members. His role is to run the post and make joint decisions alongside Quartermaster Ron Swartwood. “Our door is always open to vets — Any service person who served overseas in wartime. They just need to show their DD214s.” [DD214 is a document issued upon a military service member's retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States.] Jim reviews all new applications to make sure qualifications are met, and then the person is brought in before other members and voted in.

Jim estimates that currently there are about 14 active local members. Other members are 'snowbirds' who travel elsewhere through the year. Membership numbers are down overall.

No members of VFW Post 8726 were physically able to march in this year's Naples Memorial Day parade. Instead, they waited at the park for the cannon to be fired. WW2 vets are getting older, and not as many are still alive. Vietnam vets have been prone to health issues such as cardiac and respiratory problems, or they are unable to walk. And the younger guys just are not joining — but the reasons for that are harder to discern.

It’s something that Jim wrestles with as Commander, because once again: he’s taken this role because he wants to help. He is aware of the popularity of online forums for vets and realizes they have some useful purposes. But, similar to that nagging feeling many of

us express these days, Jim asks, “How well can you really trust someone online?” He advocates the benefits of joining a VFW. “When you’re face to face, you can truly judge someone's character - you know who you're talking to. For anyone you talk to at the Post, we can pull up their DD214s and show you their records."

I ask him if there is a perception that the military vets of different eras or conflicts would not be able to understand each other as well. I thought Jim could speak to this, due to the fact that he served active duty during different time periods, in different locations.

To answer, he shared more about his own experiences: During the First Gulf War, he was stationed at a location next to the Gulf of Oman, working with a U.S. Air Force re-fueling squad. He was assigned to a field hospital where his LPN skills were initially put to use as a Patient Care Specialist — but then, due to his prior service and knowledge, he became one of a limited handful put on guard duty instead, which entailed 12-hour shifts around the perimeter of cantonment areas. After temperatures would reach 120° during the daytime, Jim remembers grabbing his jacket at night because 70° at midnight felt almost chilly. Part of his duty was to escort national truck drivers in tractor trailers in and out of the camp each day, bringing loads of fuel from places such as Kuwait, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia to refill the large bladders at the camp's “fuel farm.” Because it contained millions of gallons of highly explosive fuel, their cantonment area was a prime target for terrorists. At night, look-outs at high perches would monitor rafts in the Gulf waters coming ashore to peddle their wares, leading to some of the most dangerous experiences in Jim’s tour — which leads to stories better told face to face, in person.

Jim acknowledged that certainly there are differences in the experiences of vets: In Vietnam, there was endless jungle for anyone to hide in - friend or foe. In the desert, there was nowhere to hide. In Vietnam, structures encountered were typically one story huts with no locked doors.

In the Gulf War, structures were concrete with doors that required more forceful methods to open and often multiple stories to navigate.

But regardless of the situation, the simple truth is that every vet knows what it feels like to be a target, and also to search for a target. Jim put it more directly, “Maybe we don't know exactly what you've been through, but we have a good idea — We've been shot at too.” He knows how hard it is to talk to other people. Only someone else who has been through combat in wartime will understand, and that’s why the Post is there.

Jim described how a combat zone is a totally different environment from civilian life. Everything MUST follow rules, must follow order — i.e., protect the compound, make sure it's secure, and take care of patients. “You have to think on your feet so that you don't have to be told what to do every moment. You think ahead, prepare so that you can deal with a situation in the moment. Because in that moment, it's a matter of life and death.”

It is regimented, and everyone knows their responsibilities — and Jim said that the lack of this “regimented straight line” can be one of the biggest hurdles for vets to cross when trying to adapt back to civilian life. “We all have military bearing. are to do.” The work ethics of people with military experience can be a bonus for civilian employers, yet sometimes it’s a tough environment for vets because not everyone else in a civilian workplace has the same bearing. “Life on the outside isn't like the military - you have to adjust, and figure out what's right for you.”

Jim also recommended the G.I. Bill, which provides re-training in a field of one's choice, within a certain time limit after leaving the military.

The military will pay for a portion of tuition, books, materials, and a housing allowance (based on various factors) so that after their service, people can be re-trained in something they WANT to do. This is often a goal for people when they first join the military. However it requires maintaining focus on your original goals, to follow up on pursuing your dreams — and again, this can be very stressful.

VFW Post members pride themselves on helping the community as well. They host a Halloween Party for kids (the public is invited), and a members’ Christmas party. Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, families in need with limited resources are chosen (by the Ladies Auxiliary) to receive an entire turkey meal with all the trimmings delivered to them.

At Christmas, they include gifts of clothing and toys for children. When I visited, I noticed jars set out that were filled with donations for Eagle Scout candidate Ethan Genter's Maddie's Trail project. The VFW has often supported scouts. They also offer annual Crystal Apple Awards, given to teachers who advocate for the military through their teaching. This year, for the first time, they let the students choose the recipients. As part of a school project, Ethan Gentner created a nomination form for students to use to vote, and 3 teachers were chosen!

The Naples VFW Post is especially excited about plans for a Wounded Warriors in Action project in Naples next year, when they will host a hunting outing for 3 Purple Heart veterans chosen through an application process and lottery system. Jim explained that they can be from anywhere in the country, and they will likely be 3 people who've never met. The Naples VFW Post will provide a hunting cabin for the vets, where they will have (CONTINUED ON PAGE 24)

Henry graduated from FLCC with an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts & Science, and will attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the fall, to major in History. At the beginning of the ceremony, he gave an impressive speech about the impact the OCYC has had on him.

breakfast prepared for them bright and early each morning; then sack lunches to take with them during the day, and evening meals at the Post. They will have their own private hunting guides, and permission to roam a 400-acre hunting preserve. This program offers a chance to get away, talk to other vets, learn how they cope and heal.

New ideas for enjoying camaraderie are always welcomed. They’re working on creating horseshoe pits this summer, and there’s some joking about challenging the fire department to a baseball game.

The dining room started to fill with people, and I put away my notebook. The Post members wouldn't let me leave without filling my own takeout box. It was summer menu fare that hit the spot: burgers, hot dogs, rolls, macaroni salads, coleslaw, and the best part: an assortment of home-made desserts.

When I had first arrived at the Post that afternoon, the parking lot seemed nearly empty and I parked my car by itself out front. However, by the time I walked outside to leave, the entire front lot was so full, I had to search a moment for my vehicle. But then I noticed something that easily identified it apart from all the others: My vehicle was parked nose in; every other vehicle in that lot had been carefully backed into place and was facing with its front out. I haven't yet asked anyone at the VFW if that's a special rule there — Or maybe it's typical training for the military and disciplines such as fire-fighting?

It seemed an apt metaphor for the people inside: If someone calls and needs them, they're already prepared, ready to help.

About Ontario County Youth Court Ontario County Youth Court is a voluntary alternative to the traditional criminal justice system for young people who have committed certain violations, misdemeanors, or have breached a student code of conduct. Offenders who choose to come before Youth Court have their case heard by a jury of their peers, avoid attorney fees, and are not labeled a juvenile delinquent. Youth Court members are student volunteers in grades 8-12 that have completed a rigorous 20 hour training to prepare to fill the various roles of the courtroom. The training is conducted by real judges, attorneys, probation officers, law enforcement, and other professionals.

'Just what kind of punishment was immortality?’ Was the question that crossed my mind, centuries ago. Back then, it seemed more like a blessing than a curse I simply couldn’t comprehend the negatives, my obliviousness leading the first few decades to pass as smoothly as ink fell from my pen to the pages.

I even forgot that my little lapse in judgment had happened, and settled down with a wonderful girl. With the privileges of my best sellers and the money they produced, I lived an easy life, just enjoying the ride. It was only when I was around 137 that the memory of my lapse in judgement resurfaced. Even then, with advanced technology, I was the oldest human alive. And even with my influence, with my fame and money, for the first time in so many years, I got my first taste of despair. Would the government capture me? Use my blood to find the secrets of immortality? Would I become some hidden world leader’s pet?

My mind became my worst enemy, even in its old state. I felt the desperate need to hide, the imagination I had used to craft splendid world’s going against me.

The more I thought, the more I feared, and in turn, the more suspicious I became. Endless nights I spent, tossing and turning and thinking of a way to escape.

With only myself left in the world to worry about, I discreetly bought a Bunker and packed away my collection of antique pens and notepads, along with a few robots to take care of me in my old age.

The next day, I faked my death.

It made the headlines, all reading some variation of the same message. Everywhere, I was mourned.

Even with all the heartwarming little articles that wept about the impact my life had had on them, all I could do was pity what I could have - should have - been. Maybe I would have become a world renowned chef, or maybe I would have overcome my bout of writer's block, and found myself on a similar path - it’s too late to know now, regardless. Months passed to years, years to centuries. My mind degraded, the only thing keeping me alive being the verbal contract I had inadvertently signed. I was locked into this, with no way out. All I have left is the occasional days where I actually wake, the few robots that have long since broken down, and these. These scrawny notebooks I fill to keep myself sane - whatever that means anymore. There aren’t many left, and certainly not as many pretty ones. The pages are old and yellowed, but they’re the closest things to communication I have left.

The young, stupid me would have shuddered if I had uttered such a thing, but… I miss humanity. What have they done?

Have they created anything even more impressive, like telepathy? Have they… gone extinct? I suppose I’ll never know now. At least - Oh, dear, I’ve been rambling on too much - this is the last page. I suppose, to make myself feel just a little better, I’ll leave you with one piece of parting advice - be cautious about what you wish for. You might just end up like me.

On June first, a Pilot whale was announced dead in Thailand after a five-day effort to try and save it. In its stomach was 17 pounds of plastic, including 80 grocery bags. A necropsy revealed that the mass amount of plastic had clogged the whale’s stomach, making it impossible to ingest nutritional food. 1 This is not an isolated incident - more than 50 species of marine fish ingest plastic debris, which has a variety of lethal impacts and can be a route for bioaccumulation of toxic compounds throughout the food web. The fish confuse plastic for an edible substance because microplastics in the oceans pick up a covering of biological material, such as algae, that mimics the smell of food. 2 This isn’t only dangerous for the fish, but humans as well. A team of scientists from Malaysia and France discovered a total of 36 tiny pieces of plastic in the bodies of 120 mackerel, anchovies, mullets and croakers. They warned that as plastic attracts toxins in the environment, these poisons could be released into people’s bodies after they eat the fish. (The plastics found included nylon, polystyrene, and polyethylene.) 3 Globally, eight million tons of plastic - bottles, packaging and other waste - are dumped into the ocean every year, killing marine life and entering the human food chain, the United Nations Environment Programme said in December. According to some estimates, at this rate by 2050 oceans will carry more plastic than fish, and an estimated 99% of seabirds will have ingested some form of plastic. 4 While plastic floats around everywhere, there’s also a specific area where it rapidly accumulates between California and Hawaii. Named the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, it contains at least 79,000 tons of discarded plastic, covering an area of about 617,800 square miles according to a study published this year in Scientific Reports.

While plastic was not the only material found, Plastics were by far the most dominant type of marine litter, representing more than 99.9% of the 1,136,145 pieces collected by trawls (a large wide-mouthed fishing net dragged by a vessel along the bottom of the sea or a lake.) 5 Now, as devastating as this all is, that’s not to say things are hopeless. Even now, we’re trying to both clean the ocean and prevent this from worsening.

What can you do to help?

Firstly, you can eliminate plastic from your life - from straws to cello wrap, you can even carry your own silverware to avoid disposable cutlery. Not to mention reusable grocery bags!

You can also make sure to recycle whenever possible, and if you see a stray piece of garbage, pick it up and dispose of properly! Naples students participate in Ontario County Youth Court Induction Ceremony The Ontario County Youth Court (OCYC), a program of the Partnership for Ontario County, held our Annual Celebration & Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, June 6th at Finger Lakes Community College to recognize our new volunteers following the completion of their training. Naples had strong representation at the ceremony by several young Neapolitans who participate in the Youth Court.

For over five weeks, more than 50 students from four counties and fourteen school districts participated in a rigorous training to prepare them to fill the roles of the courtroom. These students were inducted as full members of Youth Court by Gorham Town Justice John Peck.

New inductees included NCS students Ethan Friend and Autumn Kunes (who was not able to attend the ceremony). Also in attendance were NCS incoming seniors Owen Kennedy and Elizabeth Maczynski, who have both served on the Youth Court for over three years. As Acting Chair on the Steering Committee, Elizabeth led the Pledge of Allegiance for the ceremony.

In addition, senior Youth Court members graduating in June were honored in appreciation of their years of service.

Naples home-schooled student Henry Livingston, son of Christine and Bill Livingston, has been an OCYC member since 2015, and served on the Youth Court Steering Committee for the past 2 years. • Captain Ephraim Cleveland, one of the first white settlers of Naples, who arrived from Connecticut in 1789 with his wife and son. This house was built a few years later in 1794.

• stories about Captain Cleveland's service as a soldier: taken prisoner in the French/Indian War (1754–1763) by Native Americans, held captive for 3 years and escaped. Then he fought in the Revolutionary War, battles of Bunker Hill, Brandywine and Monmouth.

• the eel-skin cap that Ephraim wore... Legend says that during the Revolution, he and Mark Watkins were captured by Native Americans who pulled out all their hair, tied them to stakes and prepared to burn them. But a Native American woman who had befriended them intevened. Arrangements were made.

She was given Ephraim Cleveland in place of her son who was killed in the war.

During captivity, Cleveland and Watkins afterward often went hunting with the Native Americans. They were even trusted to go alone a few times, and therefor able to escape. From that time Ephraim was bald, and wore an eel-skin cap!

• stories about how the house itself was built, as the first framed house finished in the village. This was all possible because of waterpower, the first water raceway (from Grimes Glen in 1792), and lumber from the Metcalfe’s mill (at the corner of Elizabeth and Vine Street).

• dealmaking... Captain Ephraim Cleveland was a man of means and made his money in agriculture and in buying, selling and trading property. He was appointed overseer of the poor in the village. He also took care of the village livestock.

• a friendly meeting place for all early Naples residents. There are stories about the Seneca People helping the settlers early on with food and shelter. Later they slept by the hearth in the kitchen of the Cleveland House on cold nights. The house was specially designed with cozy, continuous room-to-room heat circulation from four fireplaces.

Stephen Watkins Clark was born in Naples in 1810, the son of Major Joseph Clark who came to the Naples Valley in 1791 as one of the first settlers, and Mary Sutton Clark, the daughter of Hannah and Elisha Sutton who were also early settlers.

Clark was said to be one of the brightest youngsters in the Naples Valley when he started school.

"There wasn't high school in Naples when I was a boy. The nearest high school was Franklin Academy in Prattsburg which I attended for one year boarding with Stephen Prentiss who owed my father a bill which couldn't be collected other than providing me with room and board while I went to Franklin Academy.

I walked home to Naples, a distance of 10 miles, on Fridays and returned to Prattsburg Monday mornings on foot. During my vacations, I earned $2 a day decorating walls such as I did in the Ephraim Cleveland house in Naples."

[Clark] was the first Naples-born person to graduate from college, having graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1837.

Clark was headmaster at Goshen Academy and East Bloomfield Academy during his nearly 50 years as an educationalist. He became the author of six English grammar textbooks which eventually were adopted by most of the U.S. public schools in the 1850 to 1900 era. He died in 1900 at the age of 90.

His best-known legacy in Naples is the wall stenciling that he did.

Stephen Clark painted the upstairs bedroom and the parlor room downstairs in the Ephraim Cleveland House in the summer of 1828. His designs include vases, leaves, and geometric designs stenciled in red, green, blue and black patterns [...] using pasteboard stencils and paints made of egg and buttermilk colored with berries and other natural dyes. Whereas many other stencilers used the stenciling for border designs around doors and windows and between the walls and the ceiling, Clark chose to space his vertical designs evenly around the entire room creating an effect that was later used in vertical wallpaper designs.

Pretty soon, the walls are going to see us!

On the balmy evening of Wednesday, June 13th, Naples Historical Society (NHS) President John Cowley made a surprise announcement at the Society's annual spring dinner: The Naples Historical Society is purchasing The Cleveland House, for the purpose of preservation and turning it into a museum about Naples history! Then, after a delicious meal at Roots Cafe, attendees made their way down the street to enjoy dessert at The Cleveland House, where NHS board members Mike Terry and Elisabeth Cowley continued the presentation with a Powerpoint show (by Mike Terry) to explain...

Why the Cleveland House? The home's builder, Captain Ephraim Cleveland, was a founding member of the community and played an important roll in the history of our village. It represents a cross-section of local cultures, built during a time when the Seneca People (the Haudenosaunee) lived and hunted alongside the early settlers.

Its location is perfect: at the original village center, and now along a well-travelled intersection at an entry to Naples, with good parking available. The house is on the National Historical Registry, in good condition and can be ready for opening soon.

What are the plans? The Cleveland House will serve as a central location for showcasing Naples history. For example; each individual room in the house could highlight a specific aspect of our rich history. It has already been decided that one room will feature Pre History/Native American history from the Coyendaga Valley. Another room could feature the history of the Naples settlement (first known as Watkinstown, then Middletown). In the stenciled room it might be natural to focus specifically on the Cleveland House history, the people that built and called this beautiful house their home.

Other visions for the museum? Preserving our history for future generations and cultivating pride in our home now, this place where we all live. It can provide a space for people to come together as a community to share and learn. It will also be an opportunity to emphasize respect for those who lived here before us, including the Seneca People.

The Society would like to acknowledge Jim and Caroline Tilburg for reaching out and allowing NHS to purchase the Cleveland House with the intent to preserve it for the future. The Naples Historical Society looks forward to continuing the Cleveland House tradition of being friendly neighbors and wants to plan special events/programs for the community in this historic neighborhood. NHS wishes to collaborate with all its new neighbors around the Old Town Square.

How can you help? Donations played a super important part in getting the plans this far, and will continue to be crucial for supporting the development of a museum in Naples. 2018 Summit in the Valley - Inspiring Stewardship of our Naples Valley

By Annie Almekinder, Guest Contributor Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the Summit in the Valley event on May 20th. Visitors were inspired by the many organizations who shared their insights into how climate impacts their industry. This grassroots event helped local organizations and businesses share information, network, and find opportunities for their industry. Through the event, we realized we are all empowered to protect our environment, make changes in our daily habits, and make choices about how we consume.

Several of our speakers drew our attention to how we can make choices in what we purchase and the votes we cast.

Mark Lowery of the Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany provided specific information about how Naples could become a Climate Smart Community. This designation would require that the Village and Town Boards adopt the Climate Smart Community Pledge. Climate Smart Community grants can be used to support a variety of climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, including organic waste reduction. Our grassroots organization would welcome the opportunity to follow up with these initiatives with our local government officials to make Naples a better steward of our environment.

Another highlight of our presentations was Robert Putney from Impact Earth. He was able to establish contacts with several school districts, including Naples Central Schools, to introduce the idea of Zero Waste. He will follow up with the ad-

ministration in these districts to offer Zero Waste solutions for cafeterias that include composting, compostable containers, and a better sorting process that keeps waste from entering our landfills.

He was able to direct key players to where to find grant money to make this happen in our district.

Mat Levine and his volunteers highlighted the many projects The Nature Conservancy is accomplishing in our region. (6) Mat explained that while The Nature Conservancy is an international and national organization, they also manage many local projects to protect the thousands of acres for wildlife, manage water pollution, and ensure future generations will have access to our forests and streams.

Our keynote speaker, Suzanne Hunt of Hunt Country Vineyards shared her experiences as a fourth-generation farmer in our local wine industry and discussed energy policies at the state and local level. (4) She explained how more businesses can use sustainable energy in their business model. John Brahm of Arbor Hill Winery shared his data collection about the grape strains he grows and how early frosts and erratic winter temperatures impact his harvests.

Weaver Wind Energyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Art Weaver shared information about small-scale windmills for personal use and the need for everyone to look more closely at how our current energy grid is structured.

The Naples Community Park board offered maps and information about GROC Finger Lakes Trails, inspiring everyone to enjoy the outdoors on our local multi-use trail system.

Laura Bailey, NY Greenhouse and Nursery, provided free trees to teach us about the trees in our region and what is best to plant. Ontario County Soil and Water, through Megan Webster, provided information about how to protect our wetlands from invasive species, erosion, and nutrient runoff. Beth Altemus and Becca Jensen of Canandaigua Lake Watershed Alliance helped us understand how water runoff from surrounding farms and lawns impacts the lake’s water quality. Aggie Osborn shared her beekeeping knowledge teaching us the importance of pollinators in agriculture. (5) Nathan Hayes shared all the activities, hiking information, and summer camp offerings happening at Cummings Nature Center this year. Andy Webster shared the progress of the Walden Project at Cumming Nature Center. This is a unique opportunity for high school students to learn outdoor skills that are often overlooked in a public school setting and help students appreciate their environment. (2) Kids got their hands wet with Nadia Harvieux from FLCC Muller Field Station who brought macroinvertebrates to show how these ‘bugs’ are indicators of our water quality. Along with Maura Sullivan, they shared Citizen Science opportunities. Families learned how everyone can be scientists in our own backyards by recording the birds, butterflies, and even moonlight we see. This information feeds databases that scientists draw upon in their research. Fifth-grade students at the Naples Elementary School in Seth Almekinder’s class took participants on a bird migration sharing the many obstacles birds encounter on their long journey. (1) Visitors enjoyed making reusable cloth bags at the Naples Library booth with Jude Schewe and Jessie Olney. (3) Finger Lakes BioChar’s Kathleen Draper presented her organization’s research in developing different biochars to increase soil productivity. One of the most fascinating finds is the use of styrofoam in biochar as a possible filter. Regina Sousa from Ontario County Waste provided information about their program ‘Sorta’ which educates people to sort better for recycling.

David Collie taught visitors about the health benefits of Organic Mushrooms. Pure Nourish Food & Apothecary Forest’s Kay Megorden-Staten helped the audience learn about water stewardship and permaculture. Lynne Westmoreland spoke about how vegan lifestyles impact our environment. She brought her passion for humane living to her presentation. Thanks to Alex Leto who offered Voter Registration so we can all be more politically involved.

Folks enjoyed the locally made Thai food as well as Potatoes and Molasses Organic, a farm to table food truck.

Special thanks to the Naples Jazz Band and Phil Bariteau for bringing beautiful music to the event, as well as thanks to Emma D’Aurizio for opening our event with her amazing solo.

in Our Own Backyard

I grew up in Virginia and then lived in North Carolina, and it may be that I never really paid full attention to spring. Or perhaps I took the longevity of the Southern greenery for granted, for it seems to me that the Finger Lakes landscape comes to life with a striking vernal urgency. It may be sacrilegious in a place so devoted to the colors of autumn, but I find myself harboring a secret love for the green hues of spring. My awe of spring vistas is accompanied by a deep desire to differentiate and discover the individual components, the dashes of olive, emerald, chartreuse, and jade that comprise the lush mountainsides, jagged ravines, and expansive pastures of my new home. I want to know each plant, every animal, and, at the very least, the edible fungi. As a transplant myself, I find that familiarity with these wild residents has helped me build a sense of home in a still, at times, unfamiliar place. One of the best ways I’ve found to explore and grow familiar with the natural world is attending events at the RMSC Cumming Nature Center (CNC), events like the upcoming BioBlitz on Saturday, July 14.

So what’s a bioblitz? A bioblitz is a collaborative race against time to catalog as many living things as possible within a designated area. A bioblitz attracts a high concentration of experts from a wide range of disciplines. These experts spend time surveying species throughout the course of the event, and they also lead public hikes focused on their area of expertise. This year’s schedule of hikes will focus on topics like birds, frogs, trees, mushrooms, salamanders, invasive species, wetland plants, insects, tracking, wildflowers, nature journaling, owls, and more!

A bioblitz creates an informal and fun way for participants to develop a snapshot of the breathtaking variety of life that can be found in their region. Usually held annually or biannually, a bioblitz provides an opportunity to keep track of ecological change over time. It’s also a great way for the public to engage interactively with realtime scientific observation. Public contributions to data collection are referred to as citizen science — a participatory model designed to increase public engagement and the scale of scientific research. For example, visitors to the Cumming Nature Center (CNC) during November to April can take part in Cornell’s decades-long citizen science initiative, Project FeederWatch, which tracks avian winter migration patterns.

Even those who may not self-identify as an expert can contribute to the surveys at the CNC BioBlitz. Participants with modest knowledge of plants and wildlife are encouraged to download the iNaturalist app on their smartphone, before arriving at the nature center. With iNaturalist, participants can snap photos along the nature center trails and upload them later. These photos capture location and are reviewed by experts on iNaturalist. Once reviewed and confirmed, they will be added to the 2018 list of species at the nature center.

Full disclosure: I work at the nature center, and my time there has brought me closer to the natural world through sight, sound, touch, taste, and feel. No event brings together a total sensory experience quite like a bioblitz. So pack a picnic, bring the dog (on-leash, please!) and join the discovery on July 14!
