ROBERT G. “BOBBY” GERBER
Managing Partner
As we reflect on the past year, I am proud and grateful for the extraordinary commitment of our NGE community to advancing our values within our firm, across the legal profession, and throughout the communities we serve.
Our dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility was evident in every facet of our work. This year, our attorneys championed diverse causes, served on charitable boards, and
demonstrated leadership within the legal community. Our continued participation in the Investing in Justice Campaign and recognition for excellence in pro bono service underscore the impact of our people on those who need it most.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2025, we expanded programs to address bias, promote disability inclusion, and build a diverse pipeline of legal talent. Achieving Mansfield Certification for the seventh consecutive year and being named one of Seramount’s Best Law Firms for Talent reflect the culture we have built together.
Our sustainability efforts set a new benchmark. From earning the LEED Platinum certification for our new office to pioneering practices that minimize environmental impact, we demonstrated what’s possible when purpose and progress go hand in hand. I invite you to view our sustainability video, which captures the spirit and impact of these achievements.
Community engagement has never been stronger. Across the firm, colleagues led with purpose and compassion, strengthening partnerships and making a positive impact. The trust of our clients and friends, together with the dedication of our colleagues, makes this possible, and we are deeply grateful.
As we look ahead to 2026 and celebrate 40 years since our founding, we invite you to join us in shaping what comes next. Whether through collaboration, advocacy, or shared commitment to progress, your partnership will help us continue building a future defined by impact and integrity. Thank you for being part of this journey.

SONIA MENON
Sustainability Committee Chair, Chief Operating Officer
Last year, we shared our excitement about what could be: moving into a new home, pursuing ambitious certifications, and designing a space where sustainability would shape how we work. This year, we get to tell the story of what is.
In May, we opened our doors at 225 W. Randolph and stepped into a light-filled, healthy workspace that reflects the choices we made long before move-in: reusing what we could,
sourcing locally, favoring low-carbon materials, and prioritizing air quality and energy efficiency. Those choices added up. Our build-out at The Bell achieved the LEED Platinum certification - the highest standard for interior environmental performance, and a first for any Chicago law firm. It wasn’t a label we chased at the end; it was the outcome of decisions we made at every step: diverting construction waste from landfills, cutting energy use beyond code, reducing water consumption, and adopting systems that right-size how our office runs.
Sustainability didn’t stop at our doors. Moving thoughtfully meant decommissioning thoughtfully, as well: donating and recycling thousands of pounds of office furnishings and supplies to support local schools and nonprofits, and minimizing waste. Our efforts extended into the community: raising funds for neighbors facing food insecurity, delivering fresh produce to veterans, and showing up together to restore our parks.
Day to day, our Sustainability Committee kept momentum going, sharing practical tips, leading educational initiatives, and championing small changes that add up. The most gratifying part of this year was seeing our colleagues transform ideas into action and making sustainability a shared practice at NGE.
We set out to build a space that matched our values. This year, we proved that values can become a place, a practice, and a pathway. Thank you to everyone who planned, problem-solved, and participated. The work continues, toward deeper Scope 3 reductions, new partnerships, and the next milestones on our journey to net zero.

MARLON LUTFIYYA
Director of Talent & Diversity
One of the ways that NGE expresses its commitment to inclusion is through shared responsibility for the success of others. Human-centered leadership, empowerment and accountability for others’ experiences remain hallmarks of our approach to inclusion, in interactions with each other, with clients, and in the community.
For example, the Firm joined Diversity Lab’s “Inclusive Leadership Habits” pilot in 2025—a
program designed to help our senior leaders, including Executive Committee members and practice group leaders, routinize inclusive behaviors that benefit everyone. We continued to enhance our recruiting processes to broaden the talent pools for open positions and to evaluate candidates more objectively based on their strengths. That helped us to achieve Mansfield Certification for the seventh consecutive year. We held programs and events designed to help our attorneys and staff listen to and learn from each other, including: a program about the current socio-political landscape and about how attorneys and staff can foster resilience in times of overwhelm; a Black History Month panel program with NGE colleagues about the diversity of perspectives among Black Americans; and our ever-popular, annual “Diversity Potluck Throwdown,” which invites all attorneys and staff to celebrate differences through food.
We also strengthened partnerships with organizations that share our commitment to empowering historically marginalized or at-risk communities. These include long-time partners such Equality Illinois, Step Up, and the All Stars Project but newer partners as well.
Thank you for your interest in our efforts and for your continued support. We hope you find value in the experiences and achievements we share in the pages that follow.

MIKE R. TURNER
What an honor and privilege it is to steward the considerable and never-ceasing pro bono efforts of NGE! I always enjoy helping assemble this guide, as it shows the volume and scope of pro bono accomplishments and activities handled by our attorneys throughout the past year. The firm has long been known for punching above its weight in the pro bono arena, and this year was no exception.
In 2025, NGE attorneys collectively contributed over $2.5 million in direct pro bono legal services. Separately, our attorneys spent countless hours advising the 65 charitable boards on which we collectively serve and supporting their organization-sponsored events. We also make financial contributions, which include supporting charitable fundraisers as a firm and giving individually to charitable causes we care about. As an example of this, and for the fifth year in a row, all of our attorneys voluntarily made a financial donation to support legal aid services in and around Chicago through the Investing in Justice Campaign.
The need for pro bono counsel is great. In this profession, there is no better reward than helping someone overcome a legal barrier that they are not equipped to pursue on their own. I hope you are inspired by the broad range of pro bono matters reviewed in this year’s report and perhaps gain new insight into the meaning of access to justice.

Pro Bono Committee Chair
SUSTAINABILITY

At NGE, environmental stewardship is not a standalone initiative—it is embedded in how we operate, build, and engage with our community. As active corporate citizens, our initiatives are designed to reduce our carbon footprint, promote sustainable practices, and inspire others in the legal industry to do the same.
Our firm’s sustainability journey is powered by collaboration—within our firm, with our clients, and across our communities. We are proud to contribute to a more equitable and environmentally conscious future. It is a responsibility we embrace with purpose and pride.
A NEW HOME AND A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

When it came to constructing a new office, Sonia Menon noted, “Our goal was to create a space that reflects our values— efficient, inclusive, and forward-thinking. We didn’t just want a beautiful office; we wanted one that actively reduces our environmental impact and supports the well-being of our people.” From office sizes to carpeting to utensils, each detail was carefully planned to align with NGE’s sustainability standards. To learn more about how we incorporated environmental values into our construction process, watch the video above.
HONORS AND RECOGNITION FROM ACTION

AN AWARD-WINNING BOLD STEP FORWARD
NGE’s newly built-out office at The Bell, a Chicago Landmark building, achieved LEED Platinum Certification under the rigorous LEED v4 Interior Design & Construction (ID+C) rating system—the highest level awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. We are proud to be the only law firm in Chicago to have achieved this distinction. This certification reflects our commitment to energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and occupant well-being. The project earned 85 points across all LEED categories, making it the second largest LEED v4 ID+C Platinum Certification interiors project in Illinois.
From the outset, our build-out choices were guided by sustainability. During the construction process, NGE:
• Diverted over 75% of our construction waste from landfills.
• Achieved an 18% reduction in energy consumption beyond code.
• Achieved over 40% water reduction.
• Maximized natural daylight and indoor air quality.
• Incorporated a variable refrigerant flow system to optimize energy use.
• Reused furniture and zero-carbon materials to minimize environmental impact.
• Prioritized using recycled and locally sourced materials from renowned sustainable brands.
INSPIRING LEADERSHIP
This year, NGE’s Chief Operating Officer, Sonia Menon, was recognized as a 2025 Notable Leader in Sustainability by Crain’s Chicago Business.
Sonia’s strategic vision has driven firmwide adoption of ESG principles, inspiring colleagues to lead with integrity and purpose. Under Sonia’s leadership, NGE has developed quantifiable sustainability standards, significantly reducing Scope 2 and 3 emissions, and integrated sustainable practices into everyday activities. Sonia’s example demonstrates how strategic leadership can drive meaningful change, positioning NGE as a model for environmental stewardship in the legal industry. We are very proud of her well-deserved recognition and the lasting impact of her work.

COMMITMENT THROUGH ACTION AND EDUCATION
THE NEW OFFICE EQUATION: SUSTAINABILITY, FLEXIBILITY AND THE FLIGHT TO QUALITY
In October, NGE welcomed more than 50 real estate leaders, including developers, tenants, and landlords, for a behind-the-scenes look at our transformation into a LEED Platinum-certified, hybrid-ready workplace. Panelists and industry experts shared how our move to The Bell demonstrates the powerful intersection of sustainability, flexibility, and premium building selection.
The discussion highlighted our intentional approach: from choosing a landmark building and sourcing locally, to designing a space that fosters collaboration and supports hybrid work. Our team’s partnership, innovation, and commitment to challenging assumptions enabled us to deliver results on time and under budget. NGE’s journey was recognized as a model for balancing firm culture, environmental responsibility, and the evolving needs of today’s workforce.

DECOMMISSIONING AND DONATING
As part of NGE’s move, we set an ambitious goal: to achieve zero-waste in every step of our transition. Through careful decommissioning, donating, and recycling, we ensured that furnishings and equipment from our former office found new purpose rather than ending up in landfills.
• Donations: We provided 36 appliances and over 240 pounds of unused office supplies to local schools, daycares, and not-forprofit organizations—supporting our community while minimizing waste.
• Recycling: Our efforts resulted in recycling 71,513 pounds of office furniture and fixtures, the equivalent weight of 22 cars, diverted from landfills and given a second life.
This commitment to responsible decommissioning demonstrates how thoughtful planning can benefit both the environment and our local community.

At NGE, we are committed to learning about and participating in sustainability efforts that will promote socially responsible changes in the office and beyond. Our firm’s Sustainability Committee, comprised of lawyers and staff, identifies areas that will positively impact our environment. Each bi-monthly newsletter highlights suggestions that inspire us to make changes that impact our environment in the office, at home, and in our communities.

GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY

ALLEVIATING FOOD SCARCITY FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
We are dedicated to supporting organizations that provide healthy options for our community members to thrive. This year, as food banks throughout Chicagoland faced increased demand, NGE colleagues responded to a call to action with generosity and purpose.
Through our recent campaign for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, NGE raised $11,730 – enough to provide 35,190 meals for families in need across the city. This collective effort reflects our commitment to fighting food insecurity and supporting the well-being of our neighbors.
In addition, we donated six cases of fruit to the RTW Veterans Center, helping local families gain access to fresh, nutritious options to grow stronger together.

We are proud of our NGE Community for helping those in need while cleaning out their closets in a sustainable way.
CLEAN UP GIVE BACK
NGE is proud to continue its partnership with Clean Up Give Back for our firm’s annual Park Clean Up Day, leaving Schiller Woods better each year. On a beautiful Saturday in September, our colleagues and their families came together to restore the park to its natural, intended habitat and to support a healthier environment.
This year, our team collected and removed more than 450 pounds of trash found throughout the nature preserve, demonstrating the power of collective action and environmental responsibility. As a token of appreciation, participants received belt bags made from 100% recycled polyester from New Balance – an athletic apparel company that shares our commitment to sustainable practices.
Our ongoing efforts reflect NGE’s dedication to partnering with organizations and brands that champion a sustainable future, reinforcing our values both inside and outside the workplace.

As we celebrate our achievements, we remain focused on continuous improvement. We have applied for the Green Building Initiative’s Journey to Net Zero certification, and are exploring opportunities to deepen our Scope 3 emissions reductions and expand our community partnerships. Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and we are proud to lead by example—building a future that is equitable, resilient, and environmentally conscious.

Diversity and meaningful inclusion remain critical to our firm’s mission. We recognize that effective inclusion requires continuous effort, and we are committed to the focus, investment and hard work required for real progress. At NGE, we hold ourselves accountable – both individually and collectively – for fostering inclusion and belonging at our firm, in the legal profession and in our broader communities.
FIRM RECOGNITION

NGE ACHIEVES SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE MANSFIELD CERTIFICATION
Diversity and inclusion are vital components of NGE’s culture, identity and strategic plan. They are critical to the firm’s goals: providing the soundest and most sophisticated legal counsel to clients, as well as attracting, retaining, and promoting exceptional people. Since 2018, the firm has participated annually in the Mansfield Rule. Every year since, NGE has achieved the Mansfield Certification for meeting thresholds related to inclusivity, equal access, and transparency in advancement processes and leadership roles. As a participant in the program, we pledge annually to consider a broad pool of talent for all available opportunities.
To achieve Mansfield Certification, NGE confirmed that at least 30% of the candidates considered for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, and senior lateral positions were attorneys from historically underrepresented groups, including women, attorneys of color, LGBTQIA+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities.
Managing Partner Robert G. “Bobby” Gerber recognized the achievement as a validation of the firm’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion and equal access: “The Mansfield Rule is a formalization of our firm’s longstanding commitment to ensuring that every individual has the same opportunity as others to develop, advance and succeed.”

She discussed the scarcity versus abundance mindset, including the risk of defaulting to stereotypes and biases when we are operating under a scarcity mindset. 100%
ATTORNEY
NGE ATTORNEYS RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE IN
Counsel Andrew S. Fraker and Associate Joseph “Joey” Sherling were recognized by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association with the Excellence in Pro Bono Service Award. This prestigious award, presented by federal district judges, recognizes lawyers who have dedicated time serving the Court and the community by providing outstanding pro bono representation and advocacy for those in need. Since 2011, twenty different NGE attorneys have been recognized and received this Excellence in Pro Bono Service Award.
Andrew and Joey were recognized for their work on behalf of the plaintiff in The Freadom Road Foundation v. Freadom LLC. Under the supervision of Partner Mike R. Turner, Andrew and Joey volunteered to take on this case after it had been turned down by several other firms because of its history and complexity. For nearly forty years, The Freadom Road Foundation and its founder, Maria Hayley, have been raising money to purchase and distribute books to incarcerated individuals to assist with literacy programs. In the last few years, a for-profit organization was formed and began selling promotional products using the client’s FREADOM mark, auspiciously with the incentive that some proceeds would go to reading and literacy programs. The overlapping use began to threaten the Foundation’s ability to market and obtain donations. Through detailed and thorough investigation of the matter, Andrew and Joey assembled a lengthy and detailed complaint for trademark infringement and other causes of action. Over the course of six months, Andrew and Joey pressed the case forward and negotiated with opposing counsel, eventually obtaining a settlement that secured the Foundation’s rights to its FREADOM mark and permanently ended use of the mark by the opposing party.

This year, NGE sponsored The Chicago Bar Association & The Chicago Bar Foundation’s 2025 Pro Bono & Public Service Awards. Marlon Lutfiyya, the firm’s Director of Talent & Diversity, served as Co-Chair of this year’s Selection Committee and awards luncheon. NGE was honored to sponsor this special event, which recognizes unsung heroes in our legal community for their remarkable pro bono and public service achievements. The awards honored lawyers who represent a broad cross-section of the legal community and whose work significantly enhances equal access to justice. In attendance were the firm’s Managing Partner, Robert G. “Bobby” Gerber, as well as members of the Pro Bono Committee, including Partners Eric M. McLimore, Mike R. Turner, David A. Wheeler, Associates Benjamin “Ben” Boris and Madison C. “Madi” Schmid, and Professional Development & Pro Bono Manager Kelly Bershader Leyens
NGE NAMED TO PILI’S 2025 PRO BONO RECOGNITION ROSTER
The firm is proud to have been named to the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Pro Bono Recognition Roster for 2025, marking our 15th straight year on the roster. The PILI Roster honors law firms and corporations that strive to provide pro bono services to individuals, families, and communities in need throughout Illinois.
NGE ATTORNEYS PREVAIL IN ASYLUM MATTER
Partner Tonya G. Newman and Associates Gina Shkoukani and Timothy J. “Tim” Bruno prevailed in a significant, hard fought pro bono asylum matter for their client and her two children. The client entered the United States with her two children in 2017 after many years of sexual assault, physical and psychological abuse, and threats at the hands of her family in Honduras and Mexico. The client was afraid to return to Honduras due to threats from the abusers. While the case was pending, the NGE team learned that the client’s abuser had died, requiring a pivot in their defense case. The team argued a relatively novel theory based on the client’s status as a single mother without male protection in Honduran society. The Court agreed and granted her application for asylum.

PROVIDING GUIDANCE TO LOCAL NONPROFITS

Girls on the Run International was founded in 1996 and has served more than 2 million girls across North America. Partner Tonya G. Newman is a member of the Board of Directors of Girls on the Run Chicago (GOTRC) and also serves on the Board Governance Committee. Recognizing that children today are exposed to longstanding gender stereotypes, societal obstacles, and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health, GOTRC’s program helps girls recognize their potential and rise above limiting gender expectations. The organization’s programs are about so much more than running – they make an impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity decline. GOTRC works to help its participants discover, build and grow self-confidence. The program coaches facilitate lessons blending physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy. At the end of the season, members participate in a 5K, and the younger girls (grades 3-5) also complete a Community Impact Project. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors and Governance Committee, Tonya supported GOTRC by counseling the organization and negotiating a contract with its event planning services partner for this year’s signature 5K event. All FHSR programming is provided free of charge in order to promote access and inclusivity and lessen the financial burden on families. Partner Robert “Rudy” Radasevich has supported FHSR for years by volunteering his time through pro bono legal work. He is currently the Co-Chair of the Board and a member of FHSR’s audit committee. GIRLS ON THE RUN CHICAGO

RANCH
Several years ago, NGE helped sponsor a small but thriving animal rescue in Chicago’s southwest suburbs. HHH Ranch is unique in that it not only rescues animals, but it also rescues people. The ranch provides meaningful work and training for people with autism and other disabilities, giving them a chance to bond and work with various farm animals in rehabilitation. As part of NGE’s support, Partner Mike R. Turner was installed as a board member. Over the last few years, HHH Ranch has experienced significant growth and is now the official intake partner of Will County Animal Rescue for all large animals. The organization’s various programs are running at capacity and generate sufficient revenue from donations to continue expanding its operations. To date, HHH Ranch has served over 5,000 families and rescued hundreds of animals in Will County and Southern Cook County. More information on this organization is available at www.hhhranchil.org

Its team of social workers, counselors, educators and outreach staff provides a wide range of services in connection with infant adoptions. The world of infant adoptions is constantly changing, and organizations like The Cradle have had to regularly review their operations to maintain their valuable services. Partner David A. Wheeler and Of Counsel Gerald A. “Gerry” Golden have counseled The Cradle in connection with a variety of matters, including various employment and IP related matters, disability issues, as well as restructuring of The Cradle’s operations and the resulting impact on staff. ACTS OF ADVOCACY

GREGORY J. HALPERN
V. LAMBDA
LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND, INC.
Partners Jonathan S. Quinn and Steven F.“Steve” Pflaum and Associates Joseph “Joey” Sherling and Carmel I. Dooling represent Lambda Legal, a national civil rights organization, in defending against a lawsuit filed by a serial pro se litigant who has repeatedly brought meritless actions against nonprofit advocacy groups. The plaintiff, who has no connection to Lambda Legal or its clients, claims that Lambda Legal’s impactful litigation on behalf of LGBTQ+ people and those living with HIV constitutes “political lawfare” against the federal government. NGE attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the complaint under the Illinois’ Citizen Participation Act, the state’s “anti-SLAPP” law, which protects individuals and organizations from retaliatory lawsuits designed to punish or silence their advocacy. The motion demonstrates that Lambda Legal’s lawsuits – five of which have already resulted in federal court injunctions protecting civil rights – are legitimate exercises of its constitutional right to petition the government, not the frivolous conduct alleged by the plaintiff. The motion is scheduled for oral argument in late 2025, and our attorneys expect the Court to issue a decision shortly thereafter. The case reflects NGE’s ongoing commitment to protecting public-interest organizations from legal harassment and to ensuring that those who advocate for equality and justice can continue their work free from intimidation.
PARTNERING WITH MEDICAL JUSTICE ALLIANCE TO ADVOCATE FOR MEDICAL CARE
Partner Jeffrey S.“Jeff” Ward and Associates Charles K. “Charlie” Shih and Alexandra “Ali” Maloney represented an indigent individual incarcerated at the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility in a lawsuit against the facility’s health services manager and the client’s primary care provider. The client was denied a doctor’s visit for eleven days after experiencing severe swelling and numbness in his legs, leaving him bedbound. Jeff, Charlie, and Ali worked with the medical director of Medical Justice Alliance, a national network of volunteer physicians who serve as expert witnesses to advocate for appropriate medical care for the incarcerated, to prepare an expert report highlighting the severity of the client’s symptoms that the facility did not treat in a timely manner. The team settled the case favorably for their client.
THREE PEARLS CHARITIES
Three Pearls Charities (TPC) is a non-profit organization that seeks to help animals through education and advocacy using the law, technology, and other tools. Over the years, Partners Gregory D. “Greg” Grove, Kate H. Campbell, Eric M. McLimore, Frank D. Paolini, Alfred C. Tam and Associate Josh Hanson have counseled TPC on a variety of matters, including its establishment as a charity, its initiative to manage U.S. wild horses using technology designed to reduce anxiety and injury from human interaction while conducting population management activities, and its initiative to protect tigers and big cats through the use of artificial intelligence to enhance compliance with laws enacted to curtail abuse. This year, NGE attorneys also supported TPC in preparing for a first-of-its-kind conference highlighting opportunities and challenges at the intersection of animal law and artificial intelligence.
NGE is proud of its longstanding pro bono partnership with Equip for Equality (EFE), an organization whose mission is to advance the rights of children and adults in Illinois with physical and mental disabilities. EFE serves as the State of Illinois’s federally mandated, governor-appointed Protection & Advocacy System aimed at getting students the education they are entitled to under the law. The firm helped to pioneer EFE’s Special Education Clinic Helpline nearly seventeen years ago and has helped staff the Helpline ever since. This year, Partners Thomas J. “Tom” Campbell Jr., Joshua A. “Josh” Klein, Tanvi B. Patel, Robert “Rudy” Radasevich, Mike R. Turner and Associates Laura E. Breckenridge, Josh Hanson, James P. “Jim” McKay, III and Roshni Sopariwalla served the interests of students with disabilities by volunteering with EFE’s Special Education Clinic Helpline.
With supervision from Partner Mike R. Turner, Associate Laura E. Breckenridge stepped forward this year to assist an Equip for Equality referral with a significant school placement issue. The matter involved a young student suffering from severe autism and mental health issues, who was unable to function in a traditional classroom setting. After being removed from their classroom and receiving no alternate instruction, the student’s parents attempted home schooling, which did not prove fruitful for the student or the parents. Laura intervened on behalf of the family, working with them to evaluate private therapeutic school placements. Upon gathering records and evidence from the previous school, Laura pressed the school district for a placement change. The district eventually agreed to fully fund the student’s enrollment and transportation methods for the student’s new therapeutic private placement. As a result of Lauran’s efforts, the student is now thriving in a school equipped to meet his needs. More information on this organization is available at www.equipforequality.org

AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) spearheads efforts to achieve health equity and justice for people living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS in Illinois. NGE has long counseled AFC and its Center for Housing & Health (CHH) on matters related to providing critical lifesaving work to end the HIV epidemic and ensure that everyone has a home in Chicago and beyond. The AFC and CHH connect people affected by HIV, chronic illness, and homelessness to lifesaving care, stable housing, and supportive services across Chicago. Through care coordination, Housing First initiatives, and policy advocacy, AFC/CHH helps thousands navigate complex systems, improve health outcomes, and build long-term stability for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
This year, Gerald A. “Gerry” Golden, Of Counsel, and Associates Thomas “Tom” Zahrt and Benjamin W. “Ben” Chertok counseled AFC and its subsidiaries on subjects surrounding general employment matters, regarding WARN and other employment issues arising from a 2025 reduction in force. They also provided counseling on concerning issues arising under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Partner Jeffrey J. “Jeff” Bakker and Counsel Aaron M. Weiss assisted AFC/CHH by drafting clear, trauma-informed Law Enforcement Procedures to prepare staff for interactions with police or U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE). Their work included a front-desk script and decision tree (distinguishing administrative requests from judicial warrants), facility-access rules (public vs. nonpublic areas), records and data-privacy protocols, staff training materials, an escalation ladder with outside-counsel contacts, and post-incident documentation steps. The result equips AFC/CHH teams to keep clients and staff safe while honoring organizational values and complying with applicable law.
This year, Partner Eric M. McLimore and Associates Sylvia Wolak and Benjamin W. “Ben” Chertok counseled AFC on matters related to their employee handbook and organizational bylaws. Eric and Sylvia also counseled CHH on updates to its organizational bylaws. More information on this organization is available at www.aidschicago.org
CHICAGO VOLUNTEER LEGAL SERVICES
Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS) mobilizes Chicago’s legal community to deliver traditional representation and innovative legal solutions to the Chicago area’s poor and working poor. For over 58 years, CVLS has provided comprehensive, cost-effective civil legal aid in Chicago in the areas of bankruptcy, foreclosure, power of attorney, guardianships, probate, landlord-tenant disputes, immigration and much more. This year, Partner Michael B. “Mike” Harlin supported CVLS by volunteering his time through pro bono legal work. Michael has focused his time on helping Chicagoans through the probate process after they have lost family members. More information on this organization is available at www.cvls.org.

LAWYERS FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS

PROFESSIONAL THEATER AND DANCE YOUTH ACADEMY
The Professional Theater and Dance Youth Academy (PTDYA) expands access to high-quality arts education for young performers by pairing rigorous training with real-world audition and performance opportunities. PTDYA partners with families, educators, and Chicago arts institutions to help students build their craft, confidence, and professional readiness – keeping participation affordable and mission-driven.
This year, Partner Jeffrey J. “Jeff” Bakker and Counsel Aaron M. Weiss and Andrew S. Fraker helped PTDYA design and implement agency-style services, such as audition support, referrals, and placement assistance, in a manner aligned with PTDYA’s charitable purpose. Aaron, Andrew and Jeff developed a governance and compliance framework, transparent fee and refund practices, conflicts-of-interest controls, privacy and recordkeeping standards, and a suite of templates including student/family disclosures and consents, engagement terms, and production participation forms. Aaron, Andrew and Jeff also created mission-alignment safeguards (board oversight, guardrails on scope and pricing, and separation of program and agency cost centers) and a staff training toolkit. These many new tools enable PTDYA to responsibly open doors for students while preserving public-benefit focus and organizational integrity.
REFRACTED THEATRE COMPANY
Refracted Theatre Company, a Chicago-based non-profit music producing company, creates electric theatre that incites productive, empathic discourse. Jon also provided strategic labor and employment advice during the ramp-up to production when contractual issues arose.

PRO BONO POLICY & COMMITTEE
Neal Gerber Eisenberg embraces its responsibility, as set forth in the Preamble to the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct, “to create an environment that is hospitable to the rendering of a reasonable amount of uncompensated service by lawyers practicing in [the firm].” The firm likewise recognizes and reaffirms the responsibility of its lawyers “to use their training, experience, and skills to provide services in the public interest for which compensation may not be available.”
By proclaiming the firm’s commitment to providing pro bono publico legal services, and providing a framework for supplying firm lawyers with abundant pro bono opportunities and managing those engagements effectively, the firm’s pro bono Policy and Procedures are designed to enable the firm and its lawyers to discharge their respective pro bono responsibilities in a manner that maximizes the achievement of the ultimate objective of any pro bono publico program worthy of its name: furthering the public good.
As a gold-level member of The Chicago Bar Foundation Law Firm Leadership Circle, the firm has established, and hereby reminds its lawyers of, the goal that each of the firm’s attorneys will devote at least 50 hours per year to “pro bono legal service,” as defined by Illinois Supreme Court Rule 756(f)(1). Recognizing that varying responsibilities and practice areas will make this goal more readily attainable by some firm lawyers than others, and seeking to increase the firm’s overall level of pro bono service without relieving any lawyers of their responsibility to strive to achieve the individual annual target, the firm has established an additional goal of providing pro bono legal service that averages at least 50 hours per firm lawyer per year.
The primary objectives of the firm’s pro bono policy are to improve the lives of citizens in our community and help make our societal goal of “justice for all” a reality. Important secondary goals of this policy include (1) enhancing firm attorneys’ satisfaction with their work, (2) providing firm attorneys with valuable practice experience, and (3) attracting to the firm attorneys who share the firm’s commitment to providing pro bono legal service.
