THE ESTATE OF JULIA EVANS REED Neal Auction Company is pleased to present the Estate of Julia Evans Reed, sold for the benefit of the Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust. Julia Reed, celebrated author, legendary hostess and beloved daughter of the Mississippi Delta died at the age of 59 this past year. Whether the topic was haute couture or haute cuisine, Julia celebrated designers and artisans and introduced readers to their talents. Julia’s work was dedicated to increasing the visibility of achievement and effort of those artists regardless of their medium. Her generosity of spirit was best displayed in her writings and - for those with the supreme good fortune to have a seat at her gracious dining tables - through her exceptional gifts as a hostess. Recognized throughout her career as a keen observer of the political scene, fashion, food, and design, Julia was also celebrated as a great taste-maker, hostess, cook, and arbiter of interior style. The Mississippi Delta is the place to which Julia always returned from her global travels as a journalist. Julia introduced colleagues and friends to the land she loved and introduced thousands more to her community through her writing. By seeing the region through her eyes, countless people developed an appreciation and fondness for the Delta in particular, and the South in general. During her lifetime, Julia also used her writing to improve the lives of the citizens of her native land. The Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust (www.juliareedtrust.org), which is the sole beneficiary of the auction of her estate collection, will continue her work, as set out in their mission statement: The Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust continues the philanthropic work that Julia began in her lifetime to help people in need. We do this by supporting organizations dedicated to providing the things in life that Julia deemed essential: a good home, nourishing food, a quality education, and opportunities for learning, literacy and engagement in the arts.
