Presidential Ramblings It IS Tougher in Alaska This year’s AIPG National Conference and associated meetings of the Executive Committee, Advisory Board, and the AIPG Foundation are being held in Anchorage, AK. The next newsletter will include updates on the activities at the national meeting, along with the observations and perspective of your section representative (me) and our representative on the national executive committee (Jean Neubeck – editor TPG). In this edition, I thought I would take the opportunity to share my first experience in Alaska. I have traveled quite a bit throughout the lower 48 states as a geology undergraduate and graduate student: 2 seasons as a geology field camp teaching assistant in CO, UT, AZ, NY; 2 seasons of (Alaska continued on page 12)

graduate field work in west Texas; and assorted trips to National Parks and points of geologic interest everywhere in between. My career also took me to OR, where I worked as a regulator and conducted source water assessments in a variety of geologic terrains. My work and personal travels, however, had not yet taken me to Alaska, but this would soon change.

It started as a simple email from my girlfriend. “Hey”, it started, “We should do this”.

The email was a casting call she had received as part of a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) web-ring. Elizabeth spent a semester in the outback of Australia, hiking and canoeing, and learning indigenous survival techniques. It was a life changing experience, and she had stayed in contact with NOLS with the hope of returning to the organization one day to become a trip leader. The email was short; a production company was looking for candidates for a survival documentary reality TV show. The episodes would air on Discovery Channel, and it would be filmed over a three month period (Fall) in Alaska. No additional detail was provided.

Elizabeth and I had been dating for just a short while. This headstrong wastewater engineer had just dropped a wilderness survival challenge on my doorstep, and there was only one appropriate reply, “ok”.

We quickly filled out the attached application, describing our respective outdoor experience. Then we made a quick 5 minute video of us chatting about our experiences, joking and stumbling through our favorite outdoor experiences, while we were stuck in traffic in northern NJ. We dropped the whole package in the mail on a Thursday, and we simply had no idea what to expect. I honestly thought that it was over…

The phone rang on Monday morning. “Can you fly out to LA for some screen tests?” You have to be kidding… And so the process began. We (Alaska continued on page 15)

worked all week, never disclosing to anyone what was going on. We certainly did not want our employer to know that we would even consider doing something this foolish. We screen tested in LA… which consisted of a bunch of on-camera interviews, interactions, etc. We would later find out that they were looking for interesting chemistry, personality traits, and trying to see who from the applicant pool might “pop” on camera. We left the interview unsure of what was happening, but we figured that when this ended, it would make a funny story. We had no idea.

The next call came a week later: medical and psychological evaluations.

We flew to LA, took a battery of tests, met with doctors, and gave blood.

We joked at the time that nobody could pass the psych evaluation if they had come this far in the process!

Another week passed, another phone call asking for a weekend trip to LA. This time, they were bringing several groups of candidates together for a field test. They would do this twice this weekend, only eight teams remained in the running. We flew back out to LA, and we were brought to location in the hills east of LA. There we met the executive producer for the first time, and he sat with us and explained in greater detail what the show would be about. I say “greater detail” because we still didn’t truly understand what we were getting into, but we now understood that the duration would be 90 days and that they were interested in documenting the problem solving skills of the participants. Apparently, this is how reality TV works… you only really know what you’re getting into once you are committed.

We met three other candidate teams, and we all sat and chatted as we each awaited our turn in the gauntlet. For this evaluation, each team was mic’d up and filmed while solving a basic orienteering challenge with a time limit of 60 minutes. As a seasoned field geologist with quite a bit of “Brunton-time” under my belt, I felt pretty confident. Then, the first team failed to complete the challenge in time. Wow! Disqualified, only three teams remained. We all started to worry.

When our turn came, we were presented with a map and compass and told to find the marked location. Once there, we would find some basic supplies with which we would have to quickly build a shelter.

We moved fast, a little too fast for the film crew! One shattered camera lens and 12 minutes later, we had found the supplies (a tarp, some para cord) and we quickly constructed an emergency shelter suitable for spending a rainy Adirondack night wishing black flies did not exist.

And then came the waiting… weeks passed, no word. We moved on, and started thinking about other adventures. The phone finally rang, “Are you still interested? We will know for sure tomorrow, but we think you’ve been selected by the network.” The next day, the call came! We were going to Alaska.

Seven days later we were descending into Cordova, AK, where we would spend one last night in a hotel, have dinner with the executive producer, and hopefully get some specific answers regarding what, exactly, we had gotten ourselves into. We were mentally and physically prepared for the worst, but we still had very few details to work with.

October 1 – The Beginning A legendary bush pilot, guide, mountaineer and his wife flew us from Cordova to our new home, in Icy Bay, Alaska. They spent about an hour with us, giving us tips on how to survive and thrive through the ordeal that was ahead of us. She said, “Always keep moving, explore every day.

Cabin fever is real, and it is your biggest enemy.” He said, “Prepare to deal with the Alaska Factor; everything is bigger, further, and harder than you have ever experienced… and don’t get eaten by a bear.”

Not sure what we were up to, but I look tired!

We had a two day sea kayak trip through the ice choked waters of Icy Bay before we found the canvas wall tent that had been erected for us. Built on a wooden platform about 20 meters from the surf on a gravel bar that didn’t quite look like it was above storm surge elevation, it was equipped with a small wood stove (good) but no rainfly (bad). It was too big to move to higher ground, but we did consider it because we feared it powerful Alaskan storm would be enough to make things a bit too interesting.

Inside we found an assortment of tools, a few basic foodstuffs (not nearly enough to survive 90 days), and a pile of random supplies like rope, netting, plastic sheeting, a trash can, a steam canner, and a spaghetti strainer. The film crew planned to visit us once every few days, we had a satellite phone to be used in emergency situations only, and we each got a satellite locater beacon to wear at all times. We joked that these would make it easier to find the bodies, but we weren’t really laughing. We were hundreds of miles from the nearest town, and despite the safeguards, we were truly on our own. With the sun setting, the film crew left us for our first night alone in the Alaskan bush.

Rain. Constant rain. We simply could not stay dry. It rained constantly, temperatures hovered in the mid-30’s, and despite having a wood stove we struggled to find anything dry to burn. The stove didn’t draft very well either, which meant we were constantly dealing with a tent full of smoke. We were not having fun. Our days were non-stop manual labor. We had a two-person saw to cut firewood, and we spent 4-6 hours each day sawing logs we found that had floated onto the beach during storm tides.

We quickly found that it was much more efficient to wade into the coastal streams and catch salmon by hand, and as we got better with this technique, we were able to catch and can dozens of pints of salmon.

In addition to the basics (firewood and food) we had a number of new realities to contend with. Bears. Every night, a new set of massive paw prints would come unsettlingly close to our tent. The beach was a primary game trail for the native coastal brown bears, and we were living right next to that trail. So, we became very conscious of scents. No food stored in the tent, no food near the tent. Elizabeth dug a 4-foot deep hole, inserted the trash can with several plastic liners, and put all of our food-stuffs in the “root cellar”. We constructed a wood hatch to cover it, and piled heavy rocks on top for a bit of insurance. All other food (recently caught fish, leftovers, etc) was kept in sealed 5-gallon buckets down on the beach, just above the high-tide line. If the bears wanted it, they could have it. We just didn’t want them to associate food with their new neighbors.

One afternoon we were in the tent preparing lunch, when we heard distinct splashing from the creek that flowed through a marsh behind our tent, parallel to the beach, and discharged about 200 meters away. We figured we were finally going to see a moose… who else would be making that much noise?

I exited the tent and walked down the gravel bar, but couldn’t see anything. Seconds later, I heard the splashing again, and saw shrubs and small trees swaying wildly. It was just like the “reveal” scene in King Kong, I thought, just before the giant coastal brown bear reared up on his hind legs about 30 feet from where I was standing!! He stared at me for a few seconds from his impossibly high perch… seconds felt like centuries, and I can honestly say that I felt a deep sadness, I was sad for all of the life I was not going to experience, sad for my friends and family that would grieve my violent, horrible death. The brown monster was easily 9 feet tall, perhaps 10 feet tall, and I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer size of his head. Impossibly massive. Then, without warning, he plopped back down into the marsh, and went on his way. We quickly grabbed our camera and video cam, set up a tripod, and recorded some excellent footage of him as he exited the marsh onto the beach, and walked away.

Breakthroughs In a fit of frustration with the wood stove, I decided to completely remove it from the tent for a troubleshooting session. In addition to drafting poorly, it was now filling with water during especially heavy storms.

We hadn’t been truly warm and dry for about three weeks, and we were getting grumpy. The breakdown revealed a “spark arrestor” inserted in the flue, which looks good on paper, but when you are burning a mixture that consists mostly of green wood, it quickly clogged with resin and choked the flue. Removing the spark arrestor was absolutely required, but when you live in a canvas tent, sparks flying out of your chimney can be especially problematic. So, I got to work and put the spaghetti strainer to use as a chimney-top spark arrestor.

Problem solved. We built an amazing fire that night, the tent dried out for the first time since we arrived, and we woke up to a toasty dry tent feeling like we had a chance.

We were still struggling to find an adequate supply of firewood. Drift wood and random twigs were fine for starting fires, but temperatures were quickly falling and we needed a solid stockpile of good firewood to survive or even be comfortable through November and December. We explored the beach in both directions every day, and hadn’t found much more than a couple of weeks supply of good wood.

Then one afternoon, as we combed the upper portion of the beach covered with dune grasses and shrubs, we found a jackpot. A 40-foot long, 2-foot diameter old growth Douglas Fir! Unfortunately, it was more than 2/3 buried in the sand. We knew we needed that timber, and that night we sketched out our plan. The next day we began digging, and within four hours we had completely excavated the 2-ton monster. We needed to be able to efficiently cut rounds from this log with our two person cross-cut saw, so we needed to not just expose the log, we needed it out of the sand. Levers. We found adequately stout smaller logs to construct levers, and we slowly hoisted and blocked it up and out of the sand over a period of about 4 hours. In just one day, we had exposed, excavated, and blocked up what would become our primary fuel source for the next 8 weeks… but much work was ahead of us.

I spent the next morning sharpening and tuning the cross-cut saw.

Having not used one of these before, it took many frustrating hours of hard pulling before we realized that the teeth on these don’t get tuned in the factory. They are delivered flat, having been stamped from sheet metal, and it is up to the user to properly bend each tooth of the saw so that each pass of the teeth cuts a channel far wider than the rest of the saw. Once tuned, we were able to cut a single round in approximately 10 minutes. We split a few rounds that afternoon and found that the log had seasoned nicely sitting there in its shallow grave… we now had a full supply of seasoned firewood just waiting to be cut, split, and stacked.

November 1 – Hitting Our Stride Having figured out the most basic and immediate threats to our survival, we began to fall into a pretty enjoyable routine. Our canvas wall tent had been transformed into a pretty comfortable little condo: we built a bed out of timbers we had gathered and cut into planks; we built a writing desk; a dining room table out of a single round of timber, halved and butterfly jointed together; and we extended our tent outward with the construction of a large vestibule. Together all of these improvements transformed our living situation, and greatly lifted our spirits. We had overcome some pretty big physical challenges, but the psychological challenges were far from over.

Saturday night is bath night~ The hot water was then used to do laundry. Wet laundry would freeze solid, and over the next couple of days, the ice would sublimate and the clothes would be ready for wear.

I can’t lie, we were hungry all the time. We had put a lot of salmon away early in our time there. We also supplemented our fish supply with clams; at every low tide I would wander the mud flats and harvest what I could. I am sure the net calorie flow from this activity was negative, but sometimes the act of hunting/searching/collecting did more to boost your state of mind than it did from a pure thermodynamic perspective.

This is what a week’s supply of fresh baked bread, for two people, looks like.

Elizabeth would then work her magic, making incredible concoctions using what we found and the few staples we were supplied with, including: flour, potatoes, sugar, baking soda, and beans. Again, we didn’t have adequate supplies of anything, so every meal was rationed, and we tracked our consumption of our supplies very carefully. Coupled with long exhausting days filled with manual labor, we were losing about 4-6 lbs a week (but thankfully our weight loss stabilized after about 8 weeks). We had become tough and lean, hardened significantly in a very short period of time.

December 1 – Winter The Sun only makes an appearance up here on the solstice. While the daylight period is technically about 4 hours long, the Sun merely flirts with the horizon for most of the day. If you don’t make an effort to find an east facing clearing in the woods, you won’t see the Sun during its very brief transit of the sky. Daylight hours are a flurry of activity. Even though we spent the previous 8 weeks preparing for the cold, there are still plenty of chores to do. And when the chores are complete, we explore/hike, gather anything edible or useful, and make mental notes of the changing landscape. Snow is falling now with increasing regularity and intensity, but temperatures seldom dip much lower than 10°F. The roaring fire in the stove keeps the tent a consistent 50°F, so we are quite comfortable inside. We also use the stove for cooking, and a large pile of very small kindling is kept handy, and Elizabeth has become an expert at managing the fire’s intensity to suit her needs. On day one, it took us three hours to boil water (barely) on the stove; now Elizabeth can accomplish this is 20 minutes.

We had learned many other lessons as well: my girlfriend and I spent 85 days alone in the toughest country around and we survived the challenges thrown at us. Raw physical challenges like the cold, wet weather of Alaska and relentless hunger, coupled with the psychological challenges like the isolation challenged us as individuals and as a couple. We both passed the tests. Elizabeth and I married a year later, and Elizabeth is now the mother of our greatest achievement: Joseph Frederick. To this day, we often look back on the experience and laugh, and occasional quip about our favorite place to go for a three month wilderness experience: “It IS tougher in Alaska�.

The Geology of Central Park field trip was considered. It was speculated that the cost to have the meeting at the AMNH would be quite high and that a cost analysis would need to be conducted.

Alternatively, a different venue would be considered but the speaker would remain. Jessica McEachern indicated that she would reach out to the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG) to discuss the potential of them hosting a joint meeting with the NE Section. 6:18 pm – Jessica McEachern signs off. 

Section Dues: The Ex Com discussed the potential of raising annual Section dues which have not been increased in 20 to 30 years.

Section dues are a solid source of revenue, revenue that could be utilized to further grow the ATMGS. The Ex Com decided to investigate this possibility further and to conduct additional discussion at a later date.



ATMGS Long Term Planning: The Ex Com discussed potential fund raising possibilities for the ATMGS. Jean Neubeck indicated that she spoke with Dick Young about considering allowing other professional organizations to participate in our scholarship fund (as opposed to starting their own). Possible mechanisms to include other organizations would need to be researched but the goal would be to preserve the principal of the Fund and also encourage interaction with other professional organizations. Jean will outline some ideas for further discussion and consideration that might be presented to the Trustees.



Goodwill Sponsorship – Alaska Meeting: The Ex Com discussed giving a donation of $1,000 to the National Meeting. A motion was made and seconded to donate $1,000 to the AIPG National Meeting in Alaska. The motion passed unanimously.

SUNY Geneseo application to form a student chapter has been approved making them the first student chapter in the NE Section. A second potential chapter may be established at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. However, the current status of the application is unknown. It was noted that it is up to the Ex Com to keep this effort, and efforts like it, moving forward. The Ex Com considered adding a line item to the 2016 budget to support student chapters.

New Business: 

Fall Meeting: Jessica McEachern briefed the Ex Com on the status of the fall meeting. The flier for the meeting is expected to go out within the next week. Bret Bennington, of Hofstra University, is conducting both the afternoon field trip and the evening presentation.

The Ex Com considered reaching out to Richard Stockton geologists as part of student outreach. Jessica indicated that she would notify members of LIAPG at the next meeting.



2015/2016 ATMGS: 108 notification letters and 45 emails have been sent to faculty members at NE colleges that currently have undergraduate programs in the geosciences. Additional colleges have been added to the scholarship database. Scholarship applications are due on December 10th, 2015. It was indicated that Luanne Whitbeck and Jessica McEachern would be filling the floating member spot for the ATMGS selection committee in 2016 and 2017, respectively.



NE Section Dues: The NE Section dues are currently the lowest section dues in the country and have not been increased since around 1986. AIPG Section dues across the country range from $5 to $35.

An increase in section dues would allow the NE Section to subsidize meetings, improve the ATMGS contribution, as well as support student chapters. The Ex Com discussed raising dues at length. It was noted that it was too late to raise dues for 2016 since renewal notices had already gone out. A motion was made and seconded to increase NE Section dues to $20. The motion passed unanimously.



Publications: Chris Proce updated the Ex Com on the status of the newsletter. The next date for content is October 16th, 2015. Chris requested newsletter input from other Ex Com members and noted that Jeff Frederick was preparing something for October.

We were able to observe the features that make up each sedimentary facies up close and collect some good examples of Cretaceous fossils.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the awarding of the Russell G. Slayback Award to one of the most indispensable members of the AIPG Northeast Section, Tom West.

The award is given to individuals who have demonstrated: “HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE, ABOVE AND BEYOND, TO THE NORTHEAST SECTION AIPG.�

Tom has been involved with the Executive Committee since 1998.

The Fall Meeting was held at the Lincroft Inn in Lincroft, NJ. Food, drink and company were excellent in a cozy, laid-back atmosphere.

Following the field trip was the social hour followed by presentation of the Slayback Awards. The highlight of the evening was a great presentation by Dr. Bennington on dinosaurs and the Mesozoic in New York and New Jersey. When we think of dinosaurs, we normally think of the western states, certainly not the NY/NJ area. Dr. Bennington begs to differ, presenting evidence of dinosaur discoveries in our area as far back as the 1800s. He provided a fascinating account, including the first dinosaur fossil hunters and the localities where fossils were found, and the specific dinosaurs to which these fossils belonged. The presentation was very enjoyable and promoted some thoughtful discussion.

The attendance at this meeting was fairly low due to several factors, in particular various leads for other venues that had fallen through and cobbling together the logistics (and thus advertisement) later than usual. We are sorry if you were unable to join us for this Fall Meeting, but hope to see you at our Spring Meeting that will be held in May.

Some Salaries Drop, But Some Hold Steady Original article from (AAPG – website) By Vern Stefanic http://www.aapg.org/publications/news/explorer/details/articleid/19095 It's no surprise to officially know the always-cyclical oil and gas industry currently is down - and for some companies, very down. It may be surprising to know, however, that even in this season that is best described by one word - "gloomy" - there are some areas of the industry that are not only holding steady, but actually shows signs of being robust. That's one of the findings of this year's annual AAPG salary survey, which showed that average salaries are down slightly this year for most - but not all - age groups. The survey is one snapshot of the industry that started the year strong and then saw oil prices - and activity, and hiring, and in some cases, job security - drop dramatically.

Taken in total, though, the 2014 survey "shows very little change in salaries" from the previous year, according to Mike Ayling, of MLA Resources in Tulsa, who has conducted the annual salary survey for AAPG since 1981. "While these (age) groups remain in strong demand, perhaps lethargic overall hiring has taken a toll on average salaries," Ayling said. For example, "beginning geologists saw an almost inappreciable drop in starting salaries," Ayling said. Indeed, the average salary for those with two years experience or less was $102,900 in 2014, down from the previous year's $103,400. "Geoscientists with 10-14 years experience had the largest gains - about 12 percent, perhaps reflecting an adjustment from last year when they saw little change," he said. But that wasn't the case for those with 25-plus years of experience, a group that saw "a major drop" of 9 percent, Ayling said, "perhaps reflecting industry retirements. "Geologists who have some experience - those in the 10- to-19-year category, are making pretty good salaries," he said, "probably because there are so few of them." The AAPG annual survey is based on U.S. salaries only, which are still considered the industry's "gold standard." The measurement for international salaries for explorationists is virtually on a country-by-country, case-by-case basis, Ayling said, which makes statistical averaging non-productive beyond the boundaries of any specific country.

How (geologically) smart are you – really?

Bob Blauvelt, GEI Consultants A woman in our company recently qualified to take Part 1 (practice fundamentals) of the Pennsylvania Professional Geologists licensing exam. All excited (and justifiably proud), she came into my office and started to fret over the exam. What is it based on? How difficult is it?

Only a few years out of graduate school, she is a solid performer and a good employee and I reassured her that, with a little study, all would be well and she will pass the exam. Not comforted, she made me log onto the ABSOG website and download the candidate’s handbook. We then took a crack at some of the questions. It is a humbling experience.

The ABSOG exam is divided into eight sections or topics, each worth roughly 11 percent of the final grade. It includes questions on General and Field Geology (valued at a whopping 20 percent), Mineralogy, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, Structural Geology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, and Economic Geology.

Like many of us, the majority of my practice has been in environmental site characterization and remediation. So these types of questions are not ones I deal with every day. But the little mini-review of the test I did with this staff geologist raises an important issue: How regularly do we practice outside our area of expertise? For me, the answer is, happily, not very often. When a client comes to me with a problem, there is enough expertise in the company to bring the right technical resources to bear on it. Although, with the pressure to stay billable, it can be tempting to try your hand at taking on an assignment that may not be in your technical wheelhouse. I urge you to resist. It is not fair to your client or your company to involve yourself in something that you have only a vague familiarity with or have only done a few times. Nothing good can come of it and the few hours you might be able to charge will not comfort you if the project goes awry.

AIPG – Executive Committee Christopher Brown I’m a Principal with PVE Sheffler, and the Director of Environmental Services for the firm. I graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelors degree in Geology in 1992. I started in the environmental consulting field in 1995 when I was hired by my former business partner after finishing graduate school at Binghamton. We built a small consulting firm which we ran from 1996 to 2011, at which point we merged with PVE Sheffler. Currently, as a Principal and the Director of the division, I focus on client development and oversee our environmental services operations across the Pittsburgh and New York/NYC markets. Our current market focus is on the State and City Brownfield programs; we’re working on the Hudson River Psychiatric Center, where we have a portion of the site accepted into the State BCP. I have two boys in High School, my wife, Natasha, works in the development office at Vassar College. We live in Pleasant Valley with our dog CC, who doubles as the Hudson Valley-office mascot. I’m excited to be involved with AIPG and help support our profession.

AIPG – Executive Committee and Newsletter Editor Christopher Proce I’m a Principal Hydrogeologist working for Roux Associates, a Long Island based environmental consulting firm. I grew up locally on Long Island and received separate Bachelor of Science Degrees in Geology and Environmental Studies from Binghamton University as well as a Master of Science degree in Geology from Wright State University. My technical background is centered in quantitative hydrogeology and groundwater modeling. Since joining Roux Associates in 2002, I started out like any good geologist, right behind a drill rig for many years in addition to completing some groundwater models. I have gone on to manage large scale remediation projects, through the NYC metro area as well as international assignments in Taiwan and Europe. Most of what I do currently is providing environmental consulting for a portfolio of petroleum and industrial remediation clients as well as a few NYC brownfield projects. I’ll be honest that I deal with personnel and budgets most of the time, but I still value the 5% of the time that I get to review a cross-section of argue about groundwater flow. I have a wonderful family with a fellow geologist for a wife and blessed with two beautiful daughters.

Possible Ancient Megatsunami Discovery!

Geologists from the United States, Japan and Europe have discovered evidence of a megatsunami at Santiago Island, located in the Cape Verde archipelago. Almost 50 vansized boulders comprised of limestones, conglomerates, and submarine basalts lay scattered across the relatively young volcanic terrain of the island nearly 2,000 feet inland and 650 feet above sea level. This discrepancy in lithology and placement leads the researchers to believe that the rocks were eroded and then deposited onto the island during a megatsunami event that occurred around 73,000 years ago. After dating the olivine minerals in the boulders, geophysicist Ricardo Ramalho linked the event to the Fogo volcano flank collapse that occurred during the same time period. At the time of the flank collapse, the sea level was about 160 feet lower than it is today, putting the megatsunami height around 885 feet.
