Presidential Ramblings Indian Summer, 2020 Greetings Northeast Section, I hope you are all managing to stay healthy and sane during this difficult time. At this point, we’re about five or six months into a life of social distancing, of extended quarantine, and, while this has been an unfortunate struggle for some, wearing masks in public is an effort to minimize the spread of this virus. Many of us have also found time to connect with our families, explore the outdoors, read some of those books that have piled up on our shelves, learn to cook some new foods, and, most important to me these days, get comfortable with a slower paced lifestyle.

In our Spring 2020 newsletter, we published an article entitled “Great Barrier Reef on Brink of Third Major Coral Bleaching in Five Years, Scientists Warn.”

As a result, Mr. Raphael Ketani, an avid reader of every AIPG Northeast Section newsletter, submitted a rebuttal article, as published below.

The Ecology of the Great Barrier Reef and Other Reefs

Since the nineteen eighties, the climate change/global warming movement has deluged the average citizen around the world with a flood of misinformation, distorted and deliberately misinterpreted data and outright lies that are presented as scientific facts. The article titled “Great Barrier Reef on Brink of Third Major Coral Bleaching in Five Years, Scientists Warn,” which appeared in the Spring 2020 issue of the Northeast Section newsletter of the American Institute of Professional Geologists is just the latest example of the disinformation campaign.

To this end, specific environmental causes have been trumpeted. These include saving the cold climate poster child in the form of the polar bear and the warm climate poster child in the guise of the Great Barrier Reef. However, over the years, brave scientists (risking their academic and institutional careers, funding and reputations) have fought against this tide by publishing information that is generated as a result of direct observation using the scientific method. This has resulted in a large body of information about coral ecology and the nature of the Great Barrier Reef. A summary of some of this information is presented below.

The Family of Angelo Tagliacozzo From the Desk of: Dennis McGrath (CPG-08578), Co-Chair Scholarship Committee I wanted to share a brief summary of recent email communications I had with Rhoda, Amy, and Eric - the widow, daughter, and son of Angelo Tagliacozzo, in whose honor the Memorial Geological Scholarship was cfeated by NE/AIPG in 1987. I updated the family on the recent achievements of the NE/AIPG scholarship fund named after their husband and father. They each received the “Coming Full Circle” article that appeared in the Spring 2020 newsletter; excerpts from thank you letters received from eight of this year’s scholarship recipients; and the Final Status Report from the 2018-2019 academic year that featured photographs of six scholarship recipients with various NE/AIPG ExCom members receiving their scholarship checks or congratulations.

First and foremost, Rhoda, Amy, and Eric were each thrilled to receive the update. It brought back happy memories to Rhoda of the time Angelo spent in NE/AIPG. It made Amy and Eric both feel good to know their father’s legacy lives on. They all expressed the belief that Angelo would be proud and happy to know that so many young scholars are being helped by the scholarship program established in his name in 1987. In return, I promised, on behalf of the NE Section, to keep them updated on a more regular basis in the future.

We encourage you to Give Back to the profession that has given you so much!

Excerpts of Thank You Messages Received from Scholarship Recipients 2019-2020 Academic Year I am writing to thank you for the opportunity to be one of the selected recipients for the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship. I am extremely grateful for the award and inspired by your effort to help students majoring in geosciences that are working towards their future careers.

As a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that students in a similar situation like my own may have to face during their educational journeys; from working multiple jobs to help with the family’s finances to wishing for more time out of their busy schedules to focus more on their studies.

I have always felt very privileged to be able to attend college and pursue my dream of becoming a geologist. My journey in college has been very challenging, but despite the difficulties, I will be graduating in May this year. I recognize that my educational accomplishments would not have been possible without the help of my family, educators, and inspiring scholarship donors like you. Corals first came into existence during the Cambrian Period (Pratt et al., 2000). Since then, they have survived hundreds of millions of years involving ever changing conditions of high and low ocean temperature, high and low dissolved carbon dioxide, the rise and fall of ocean pH, variable sea level and five major mass extinctions. Thus, demonstrating that, as a group, they are very adaptable organisms.

The Great Barrier Reef lies off the northeast coast of Australia with a northwest-southeast orientation. It is 2300 km long (1429 miles) and encompasses an area of 344,400 square km (132,974 square miles).

These dimensions make it about the size of California. The large size is the result of the great number of individual ecological, geochemical, sub-sea depth, architecture and water circulation microenvironments.

This is reflected in the 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands which comprise the reef system (Hopely, Smithers and Parnell, 2007).

The perception by environmental groups, scientists and politicians that the Great Barrier Reef is in danger of imminent destruction is based upon the observation that, at times, large portions of the reef may experience bleaching and coral death. One such widespread event took place during 2008 at the Palm Islands area of the reef and involved the loss of Acropora corals and changes in coral community composition.

Mass Acropora death took place at many other reefs in the region at the same time. The mass mortality events often occurred in association with disturbances of the ocean environment which took place during the nineteen twenties to the nineteen sixties and during the nineteen eighties to the nineteen nineties (Clark et al., 2017). There have been 26 bleaching events before 1982 (Oliver, Berkelmans, and Eakin, 2009).

Bleaching events also took place during 1998, 2010, 2015 to 2016 and 2017. The bleaching that occurred during 2015 to 2016 and 2017 was particularly widespread (Hughes et al., 2017; Hughes et al., 2018). The longest and most destructive bleaching event took place worldwide during the 2014 to 2017 El Nino (Albright, 2017). Additionally, bleaching IS NOT unusual and the extent of such episodes varies greatly over time. Severe bleaching episodes on the Great Barrier Reef have been noted for many decades in the past. While some years it can be extensive, during other years it is minimal. Organisms making up the reef recolonize dead areas on their own. Given a little time, the once dead areas will be repopulated by healthy coral (Marshall and Schuttenberg, 2006). Also, not all corals react in the same way to increasing water temperatures. The massive corals on the Great Barrier Reef are much more resistant than the short-lived plate and staghorn corals to environmental change (Ridd, 2017).

Bleaching is a complex event. The great majority of publications mention high ocean temperatures which exceed the tolerance of the algal symbiont. However, corals in the Red Sea thrive in temperatures up to 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit; Berumen et al., 2019). In consideration of cold water resistance, during 2008, coral bleaching took place in the Gulf of California due to a severe winter cold spell (LaJeunesse et al., 2010). Also, when reports are published and research is conducted, it is often stated that the subject reef is completely bleached. During the 1997–1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation (one of the most intense ocean-warming episodes to ever occur), patchy distributions of bleached corals were found to be present next to healthy unbleached colonies. This occurred due to different symbiont species harbored by affected and unaffected colonies off the coasts of Panama and Ecuador (Glynn et al., 2001).

Marine scientists have also failed to consider another factor affecting the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The Australian tectonic plate has been slowly drifting northward for the past 50 million years. Ocean temperature in the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef averages 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) whereas ocean water in its northern extent averages 27.4 degrees Celsius (81.3 degrees Fahrenheit; Lough and Barnes, 2000). Species of corals exist in the reef which can tolerate temperatures up to 29 degrees Celsius (84.2 degrees Fahrenheit; Ridd, 2017). The Great Barrier Reef is now entering the hottest waters of the Pacific. So, of course, there will be stressed corals and some coral die-off. Like all organisms, the corals must and do adjust to the environmental changes. This may result in the corals ejecting their current algal symbionts. However, other algal symbionts abound which are more heat tolerant and which will take the previous alga’s place (Roff et al., 2014).

Evidence that reefs are resilient includes their ability to adjust their position relative to changing sea level (McCulloch and Tezer, 2000).

Reefs are also very dynamic as they are composed of many coral species which have varying feeding mechanisms and are tolerant of sedimentation to a lesser or greater extent (Morgan et al., 2016).

Castillo et al (2014) obtained specimens of the coral Siderastrea siderea from a Caribbean reef. They conducted controlled laboratory experiments and found that the calcification process for this species (Great Barrier Reef continued on page 22) -17-

When I last “rambled”, I had mentioned the possibility of postponing our Spring meeting with HMPGA. Of course, that sensibly came to fruition, but now the Section is exploring ways to host a meeting on an online platform – essentially adapting to the times. You’ve likely seen the blast e-mail out recently asking for your ideas. It is our desire as an ExCom to find a way to bring us together, without actually bringing us together and we hope you’ll find interest in participating. More to come on that in the near future.

In late May, my wife, my two kids, our dog, and I drove the hour and a half from Syracuse to a real gem of a spot called Whetstone Gulf State Park, located in the Tug Hill Plateau region of Central/ Northern New York. of coral was not significantly affected by falling pH. However, warming water temperatures seemed to have more of an effect. In another laboratory experiment, the quantity of light and nutrients, reef architecture and the extent of herbivory were also found to impact corals (Castro-Sanguino, Lovelock and Mumby, 2017). Nurseries with high heat and bleaching tolerant corals were grown by Morikawa and Palumbi, (2019) where the parent specimens gave rise to descendants which were more heat tolerant and could survive bleaching. Kench et al. (2018) described how new coral growth could develop from the rubble left by the destruction of reefs by cyclones. One outcome of the destruction was also the enhancement of the size of islands which had a live reef-carbonate debris substrate. However, above all other impacts, the greatest threat to coral health is the discharge of pollution (e.g. sewage, nitrates, phosphates and pesticides) from anthropogenic sources (Cramer et al., 2020).

Having reviewed the above information, the reader can be assured of a number of conclusions:  The Great Barrier Reef is resilient as regards ocean water temperature changes and salinity changes.  Bleaching events will take place for the foreseeable future with varying effects on the corals comprising the reef.  Bleaching events are not simple, they can be due to a number of environmental factors and different species of coral are affected in different ways by these events.  The algal symbiont species must be taken into account when considering coral vulnerability to bleaching, not just the coral species itself.  The Great Barrier Reef IS NOT static and incapable of adjusting to a changing environment.  The Great Barrier Reef will be in existence for many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years.

rise of a nearly 3-mile long gorge cut into Ordovician shales and mudstones (480 to 440 MYA) of the Whetstone Gulf Formation (a secondary unit of the Lorraine, Trenton, and Black River Groups).

The trail loops around the gorge making an approximately 6-mile hike that is moderate to easy in difficulty (I gauge this based on the amount of complaining my seven- and eleven-year-old kids make). And the gorge is deep, well over 100 feet at the highest trail point. It truly is a staggeringly beautiful place which happens to be located in a low population area – making it perfect for quiet hikes during a pandemic. And the fossils are spectacular (there are supposedly some nice trilobites here, but I’m never so lucky to find those things).

Trail-side looking down Time traveling from the Ordovician to the Pleistocene, we’ve also recently visited Chimney Bluffs State Park located on the southeastern portion of Lake Ontario. Here you’ll find some eroded drumlins that have been wind, snow, rain, and wave washed over the last several thousand years. The trail positions you to look down on these “chimney-like” features, but the real reward is the walk along the narrow beach that sits between the lake and the steep cliffs made up of the north side of the drumlin.

Here you can get a closeup look at the makeup of the till that is still standing (low hanging fruit). I will warn you, however, this place tends to get overcrowded and did not seem to be attracting visitors interested in wearing face protection.

Up close from the beach I suppose if you’re itching for a road trip, either of these places are worth a visit, in my opinion. I do believe some of the DEC campsites are open at this time as well.

I feel as if I’ve “rambled” enough for one issue. I do hope you are all safe and healthy and finding whatever it is that is able to bring happiness and/or contentment to you at this time.

I am legislative counsel to The New York State Council of Professional Geologists, which SUPPORTS the above bill that seeks to require professional geologists to complete 36 hours of continuing education in a triennial period and to modernize existing laws that apply to continuing education for professional engineers and land surveyors.

Geology became a licensed profession in New York State in November of 2016. For the next two years, geologists became engaged in a lengthy process to convert their business corporations and limited liability companies into professional corporations and professional limited liability companies. This legislation completes geologists’ path to full professional status by mandating continuing education, which is required for all other licensed professionals in New York State.

At the same time, it was realized that the professional education statutes that apply to professional engineers and land surveyors have become outdated by reason of the advent of online and other remote learning opportunities. There are also inconsistencies between the two statutes (§§ 7211 and 7212 of the Education Law) that no longer make sense.

For this reason, this bill combines the regulation of continuing education for all three professions in a single law that does not contain provisions that inhibit remote and other forms of learning. It also provides for a limited carry-over provision (six credit hours) that is consistent with continuing education statutes that apply to many other professions.

For the foregoing reasons, the New York State Council of Professional Geologists respectfully requests that you support this bill.

Forget “Earth-Like”—We’ll First Find Aliens on Eyeball Planets Nautilus—Science Connected https://www.nautil.us

Imagine a habitable planet orbiting a distant star. You’re probably picturing a variation of Earth. Maybe it’s a little cloudier, or covered in oceans. Maybe the mountains are a little higher. Maybe the trees are red instead of green. Maybe there are scantily clad natives…OK, let’s stop there.

That image may very well be completely off-base. There is good reason to think that the first potentially life-bearing worlds that are now being detected around other stars (see here for example) probably look very different than Earth. Rather, these planets are more likely to look like giant eyeballs whose gaze is forever fixed on their host stars (which is not something I recommend doing with your own eyeballs).

Let’s take a step back. The easiest planets to find are those that orbit close to their stars. The sweet spot for finding a habitable planet—with (Eyeball Planets continued on page 36) -31-

the same temperature as Earth—is on a much smaller orbit than Earth’s around a star much fainter than the Sun. But there are consequences of having a smaller orbit. A planet close to its star feels strong tides from its star, like the tides Earth feels from the Moon, but much stronger. Strong tides change how a planet spins. Tides drive the planet’s obliquity to zero, meaning that the planet’s equator is perfectly aligned with its orbit. The planet will also be “tidally locked”: It always shows the same side to the star. It looks something like this:

If you were standing on the surface of a planet like this, the Sun would remain fixed in one spot on the sky. The hemisphere facing the star is in constant daylight and the far hemisphere in constant darkness. In between lies a ring of eternal sunset, quite possibly the most romantic place in the Universe. The hottest part of the planet is the location where the star is directly overhead (the “substellar point” in astro-speak). The hottest part of Earth is spread out across the (Eyeball Planets continued on page 37) -36-

tropics, depending on the time and the season. But on a tidally locked planet the Sun stays in the same place in the sky and the hot spot never moves. This creates visible differences across the planet’s surface; the relatively small hot spot is the “pupil” of an eyeball planet.

Eyeball planets come in all sorts of flavors, depending on the conditions. We are going to take a look at two examples: “hot eyeball” and “icy eyeball” planets. A hot eyeball planet is located close to its star, on an orbit that makes it hotter overall than Earth. It is blazing on the day side and deathly cold on the night side. The planet’s water is boiled on the day side and frozen on the night side.

But winds transport the water vapor from the day side toward the night side to freeze. This can create a cold trap: all of the planet’s water can be locked up in a giant layer of ice on the permanent-night side. Dry day side, ice-covered night side.

But the story doesn’t end there. When a layer of ice gets thick enough, its bottom layer melts from the pressure. This causes the ice to flow downhill, like glaciers do on Earth. So a hot eyeball planet’s thick night side ice cap spreads out and slowly flows toward the day side. There may be a trickle of water that flows into the light to be evaporated all over again. Our models project that there are characteristic wind patterns that pile clouds up in a specific region on the night side. The planet’s non-uniform appearance can really look like an eyeball. Rivers that flow from the night side to eventually evaporate on the day side might even look like veins.

Where on a hot eyeball planet could you live? It’s a classic Goldilocks story. The day side is roasting and dry. The night side is frigid and icy. In between, it’s just right! The sweet spot—let’s call it the “ring of life”—is at the terminator, the boundary between night and day. The ring of life is bounded by deserts on one side and ice on the other. There is a constant flow of water from the night side to the day side—a series of rivers, all flowing in the same direction. The Sun is fixed in the sky right at the horizon, and the area is in permanent light. Conditions are pretty much the same all the way across the ring of life. One can imagine vegetation following the rivers onto the day side until they dry up, with different ecosystems interspersed along the way. There could be mountains at the edge of the ice sheets, since the ice-covered continents would be heavily weighed down.

Treasurer’s Report  December 2019 – The Northeast Section finishes the 2019 year with the budget in good standing. A couple of donations for the ATMGS fund were accidentally deposited into the section account, so it shows on the statement but will be rectified.  The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATMGS) fund has had a good year of growth, with approximately 18% average for 2019. A discussion followed on the potential to withdraw money directly from the fund to fund scholarships, without affecting the long-term capital accumulation. Additional reminder that donations to the ATMGS fund is a great way to serve our profession.

Correspondence  Student Chapter Updates: Brooklyn College, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Binghamton, etc. - No updates on current chapters.  Scholarship-related – 19 scholarship applications were received from 12 colleges. The evaluations and applications have been distributed and hopefully by next ExCom meeting recommendations on awards will be ready.

meeting. Since this course is a half day the section can test the venue, interest, and publicizing success before planning the geophysics course. The venue in Morristown, NJ should be all set, and we will want to find a venue for dinner. We will want to make sure to publicize directly, an email blast would be helpful, and a brochure with a description of details and directions. We are planning on breakfast, lunch, and maybe an afternoon snack for the course.

NE Section – Student Chapter Engagement – No updates.

New Business  Proposed 2020 Section Budget – The Northeast section budget was discussed, and a suggestion to add sending a representative to the GSA meeting was suggested. The ATMGS fund budget shows minor fees associated with the cost of running the fund, and the projected fee expenses were increased to anticipate changes by the bank.  Scholarship Awards and the Angelo Fund Contribution - Discussions in previous Executive Committee meetings have brought up the possibility of withdrawing money directly from the ATMGS fund, and thus far a decision has not yet been made to move forward with this proposal. A discussion followed on the section budget and the ATMGS fund’s growth, including a fund growth rule to withdraw no more than 4% of the fund’s worth, which is less than the historic growth percent of the fund of about 6.8%. This rule allows for the fund to continue to grow even with an annual withdrawal. The scholarship has seen an increase in the number of applications received and withdrawing from the fund itself would decrease the financial burden on the section without compromising the awards given each year. A discussion followed on the historic growth and contributions of the ATMGS fund.  Spring Meeting – 2020 – Currently the plan includes the drone course, plus dinner and a presentation. The Morristown meeting place will not be ideal for dinner and a separate space will have to be found for that.  Publications  Newsletter – There is time to get news in for the spring meeting and possibly for courses, even if it’s just a general announcement with no details.  Advertising Sales Update & Income – Suggestions for advertisers are always appreciated.

What icy eyeball planets do have is an abundance of water—the night side is covered in ice, and there is enough stellar heating at the substellar point for water to remain liquid. There is essentially a large pond in the midst of a global icy landscape. Below the surface ice, the ocean covers the entire globe. It is similar to Jupiter’s moon Europa, but with a large hole in the ice.

Where would you want to live on an icy eyeball planet? Underwater life could exist throughout the subsurface ocean, but surface life that relies on liquid water would need to stay near the pond. Yet the conditions near the substellar point would be extreme: strong stellar irradiation in the midst of barren icy landscape. The best place to live would probably be by the icy shore of the pond, and it would definitely be advantageous to be amphibious (evolution, anyone?).

But there is an inherent danger to living on an icy eyeball planet. If, for some reason, the pond froze over, it would likely never re-melt. Liquid (Eyeball Planets continued on page 50) -49-

water, being dark, absorbs most of the sunlight that hits it. But solid ice is very reflective. So if a planet’s oceans were to freeze, the amount of energy absorbed from the star would also drop, making the planet even colder. This feedback would push an icy eyeball into a completely icecovered state from which it might never recover.

Hot eyeball and icy eyeball planets are extreme cases, but any planet that is tidally locked to its star is likely to look very different on its day side and its night side. Differences could come from clouds clustered in certain areas, from preferential melting of ice on the day side or freezing of ice on the night side, or from any number of other possible sources. The galaxy may be littered with wild varieties of eyeball planets! The search for life on other planets will almost certainly start with these worlds.

scholarships from the ATMGS, withdrawing various amounts, and buying back into the account to ride out the market fluctuations followed.  Short Course Update – Drone Short Course in April 2020 – The instructors are confirmed and permits obtained to run the drone.

Catering will be taken care of within the next week or two. A discussion followed on how to get people to sign up for the course, and the best routes to take for exposure. The target number is 20-25 participants for a comfortable course, and any additional participants would add to profits. Less than 15 participants would probably lead to a cancellation of the course. In case of complications, the possibility of running the course online was approached, and although it’s not likely it will be looked into.

New Business  Spring Meeting Planning – Joint Meeting with HMPGA – Planned for May 20, with details to follow. A field component is being planned with the museum.

Publications  Newsletter – No updates.  Advertising Sales Update & Income – Payment from another group of advertisers was received, and we are continuing to pursue other advertisers. The deadline for the newsletter is coming up on the 20th and will include spring meeting and drone short course information. Information on the scholarship awards will be included, and any other projects or news is always welcome for submission.

All scholarship checks have been cashed.

Correspondence  Scholarship-related – We received seven responses so far from scholarship recipients and they were submitted to the newsletter for publication. They will be published in the upcoming and summer newsletters.

Old Business  Short Course Update – Drone Short Course – Reschedule? – It still appears that a web-based version of the Drone Course would be unrealistic. The topic should be revisited at the next meeting to discuss a possible reschedule.

The News of Members portion of the NE/AIPG Newsletter

was a vibrant (and, often, extensive) part of each newsletter from the early 1980's, onward.

The News of Members column allows Section Members to update fellow geologists on their activities and experiences (both professional and personal). Given the expansive, 8-state area covered by the Northeast Section, and the limited opportunities to get together in person, the News of Members column fills a void and helps to maintain relationships.

Sadly, the News of Members column had languished over the last decade, given the many work/time constraints and pressures on Members.

The good news is, with the Indian Summer 2020 Newsletter,

we are re-invigorating the News of Members column!

I continue to work as an associate geologist for JR Holzmacher, P.E., LLC. Work has been very light/almost nonexistent recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The main project with which I was involved seemed to be nearing completion, but it was far from a sure thing. My contribution to this project mainly involved performing SWPPP (Storm Water Pollution Protection Plan) inspections at a construction site. This had obviously been placed on hold once New York began lockdowns in mid-March. Although the state’s reopening phase allowing outdoor construction had been reached some time ago, the status of this project is still up in the air thanks to the many different parts involved. To pass the time, I have been signing up for geology-related online webinars, which have been rewarding in more ways than one.

This unexpected availability of free time has also given me an opportunity to spend more time on my new firm, Arc Geoscience Consulting, PLLC. After earning my license to practice geology in New York State in October of 2018, I began the process of converting my firm (at the time an LLC) into a professional corporation, which was finalized in March of 2019. As I’m sure most people know, a lot goes into setting up a new business, but I now have the beginnings of a website set up, as well as a prospective project or two. Kelly Weyer (CPG-11826)

Kelly is in her second year working with Clean Globe Environmental LLC (CGE), a multi-service environmental contracting company located in New York. Her expertise brings CGE the ability to offer geophysical services, which is a good fit for the company that also provides Geoprobe, soil/water sampling, in-situ injections, remedial system construction, and O&M services. Typical CGE geophysical projects utilize electromagnetics (EM) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate buried utilities and features, such as underground storage tanks (USTs) and septic/drainage system features, in support of environmental assessments, engineering and construction projects, and property transfers. In contrast to previously working at a geophysical company where the investigative work was completed before the project really started, Kelly enjoys being involved in many steps of the environmental assessment and remediation process with CGE, which allows her to apply a larger scope of her geology background.

Since certain remediation and construction projects remain on the essential business list, CGE continues to provide services through the (News of Members continued on page 66 ) -63-

pandemic restrictions and shutdowns. Additional Health & Safety precautions are followed to keep field crews safe and healthy. Kelly can relate to the discomforts of working outside in the heat of a humid northeast summer wearing a face mask and also finding most public bathrooms closed and not available near jobsites (a personal note, but one that everyone is likely to experience at some point), but she does not mind the decrease in traffic around NYC (although not necessarily a “good” thing, since it means there are less people and commerce moving around the city). She hopes everyone out and about, whether it’s for work, education, essential activities, or enjoying a leisure activity, is staying as safe and healthy as possible! She looks forward to when the NE-AIPG section can meet in person for a geology focused outing.

Michael Grifasi (CPG-11489)

Nearly five months into the pandemic, I’m managing to remain unusually busy managing projects, and occasionally doing technical work, at FPM Remediations. I’ve been fortunate to be able to do every bit of that work from my home office, which has the dual benefit of allowing me (and my wife) to attend to our children. Being that most of FPM’s work is with the DoD, a majority of our projects are located throughout the country. Additionally, because we work with the DoD, most of our projects are considered “essential,” so the show goes on.

Travel during the pandemic has been tough but we’ve been gifted with some great field staff willing to make those trips and keep the forward momentum. I’m also fortunate to have a fantastic subcontractor (GrayMar Environmental Services) making sure things keep running smoothly at our groundwater treatment system in Washington State.

The DOH travel advisory in New York has created some fun challenges for staffing projects, especially when the quarantine list really began expanding.

From a personal perspective, my family and I are doing the best that we can. Like many others, we’ve looked for the silver lining in this slowdown and really tried to take advantage of our extra time together.

This has lead to more home-cooked meals together, family movie nights, long hikes in the Adirondacks, and a lot of good reading. I play in two bands and, as NYS has moved through our reopening phases, we’ve taken to backyard practices in the open air. It’s not the same, but it’s better than nothing. All of this has certainly helped me/us all deal with the passing of my father, Michael D. Grifasi, in April. He had been admitted to an ICU in Rome, New York, diagnosed with (News of Members continued on page 67) -66-

COVID on Easter Sunday, and ultimately succumbed to the disease nine days later. A bit of a dark cloud over an already dark time, and a daily reminder that everything in this life is impermanent. So, we continue to wear our masks, keep our hands clean, socially distance – basically do everything in our power to make sure our story doesn’t become everyone else’s story by the time this pandemic comes to an end.

Taking an idea about what members have been doing during the pandemic, I have been doing a lot of walking. The most interesting place I have walked by far has been on the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Path, located between Rockland and Westchester counties, less than 20 miles north of New York City (it replaced the old Tappan Zee Bridge). While the new bridge has been open to vehicular traffic since 2018, the Bridge Path just recently opened on June 15, 2020. During the pandemic, if you are looking for something to do one day, I highly recommend it for walkers and for cyclers. The bridge path is a 12-foot wide combination pedestrian and cycling path across the Hudson River.

It spans 3.6 miles from shoreline to shoreline and is accessible from either the Westchester County side (in Tarrytown, NY) or the Rockland County side (in South Nyack, NY).

There is a welcome center on both sides with parking, rest rooms, and limited concessions. The bridge path is located on the northern side of the westbound bridge span, so you have clear unobstructed views of the Hudson River. The bridge path features six overlooks that are designed to celebrate different aspects of the Hudson Valley history. The overlooks enable walkers and cyclers a place to get off the path, rest, and take some pictures.

I have only made it halfway across the bridge so far, but I hope to make it all the way across soon. There is supposed to be a shuttle bus that will take you back to your point of origin, so you do not have to hike both ways. I think the best features of the bridge are the views; the worst feature is probably the traffic noise. I am not a cyclist, so I cannot comment from that perspective, but judging from the number of cyclists I see in the area, I would say it appears to be a very popular destination.

In Memory of Barry A. Schwartz We are saddened to announce the passing of Barry A. Schwartz (CPG-10421) on August 18, 2020. Barry practiced engineering geology and was a member of the Northeast Section AIPG since 1999.

Born in New Hyde Park, New York, and raised in Kew Gardens, New York, Barry was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol for over 20 years. He was also the co-owner of Feathered Friends Parrot Adoption Services, Inc. in Maspeth, New York, for over 15 years.

Barry was happily married to his wife, Gayle, for over 16 years. He leaves behind his wife, Gayle; son, Peter; mother, Rochele; and sister, Jodi Engel.

In Memory of Beth Krown Mahier Beth Krown Mahier, wife of NE Section member and former NE ExCom member Luke Mahier (CPG-8948), died peacefully in Luke’s arms on July 22, 2020 after a long courageous battle with brain and lung cancer.

Beth grew up on Long Island, New York. She loved music, the ocean, and sailing. A memorial service was held on July 26, 2020.

On behalf of the current NE Section ExCom and Section members who know Luke, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Luke is a long time AIPG member, dating back to 1993, and from 2013 to 2018, he served on the NE Section Executive Committee.

Celebrating 34 Years of Scholarships!

The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship was established by the Northeast Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists in late 1986.

The first Scholarships were presented to undergraduate Geology students in 1987.

ATMGS recognizes the dedicated leadership and service which Angelo provided to NE/AIPG, to AIPG, and to the geological profession, until his untimely passing on October 11, 1986. The Scholarship furthers Angelo's goal of acquainting young geologists with AIPG and with AIPG's importance to the geological profession.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO (1936 - 1986)

Angelo Tagliacozzo received his doctorate in Geology from the University of Rome (Italy) in 1962. Thereafter, he worked in various positions as geologist, geophysicist, and hydrogeologist, which included assignments abroad, in the U.S., and with the United Nations. Angelo provided exemplary service to AIPG at the Section and National levels. He was a Northeast Section Executive Committee Member (19731982), Vice President (1977-1978), President (1979-1980), National Advisory Board Delegate (1981-1982), and Screening Board Chairman (1984-1986). Angelo's dedication to and leadership of the Northeast Section Screening Board has become the ultimate standard against which service in such a position is measured. Angelo also served as an AIPG National Executive Committeeman (1982); he was a vigorous advocate of measures to increase professionalism. Angelo was (and will be remembered as) a respected professional‌ and a friend.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

NE/AIPG grants Scholarships to undergraduate geology students annually. The Scholarships are designed to help with the cost of summer field courses, textbooks, and other aspects of geological education. Scholarships are awarded, both on academic achievement and on financial need, to students enrolled in recognized geology programs at colleges or universities in New England, New Jersey, & New York.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS Your participation is encouraged in support of this dynamic memorial to Angelo and his recognition of the importance of AIPG to the geological profession. Dear Dennis, Just a quick note to let you know that I’m 100% with you when it comes to achieving the Section’s goal of 100% participation in support of the Scholarship Perpetual Trust Fund during 2020, the 34th Anniversary of the Scholarship! I agree with your encouragement that each and every Section Member make a contribution in accordance with their ability... and this is the one time when I don’t want to be the odd person out!

For 2020, the 34th Anniversary, I’m considering pledging... Thirty Bucks A Week, Thirty Bucks A Month, or Thirty Bucks for the Year!

Now, I know it could be more—and you know it could be less!—but I am committed to contributing as much as I can, so I’m not going to delay it any longer: I’M IN FOR 2020!

Yes, my personal budget is tight, but I figure that, somehow, I can set aside $30 each month (aka the cost of weekly lattes) this year to give back to the profession that has given me so much. Also, I just wanted to tell you I am delighted to know that every one of those hardearned dollars that I contribute will be INVESTED in the Scholarship Perpetual Trust Fund, so my contribution today can keep on giving, year after year!
