Presidential Ramblings Spring 2021 Greetings Northeast Section and Happy Spring! I hope everyone is doing well, and is as excited for the warm weather as I am. This year we are gearing up to take a family trip out to Colorado. We are currently in the planning phases and want to visit the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Royal Gorge in Canon City, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Introduction

The recent onset of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and their associated toxins (HABs) has heightened awareness about water quality issues in the Finger Lakes of central and western New York. Blooms were detected as early as 2012, and by 2017, all of the Finger Lakes reported HABs events, even the three ultraoligotrophic (very low productivity) lakes, Skaneateles, Canandaigua, and Keuka. The largest cyanobacteria blooms are typically at shoreline locations, and occur during August and September, where and when lakeshore residents and tourists want to use the lake. Cyanobacteria have also been detected in the municipal raw water supplies for Auburn, Syracuse, and Rushville that draw water from the Finger Lakes. Thus, cyanobacteria could stimulate an economic disaster for the predominantly rural region surround the Finger Lakes. Harmful algal blooms are not unique to the Finger Lakes. A few hundred lakes in New York State experienced cyanobacteria blooms each year, e.g., 184 lakes in 2020, out of the 7,849 lakes in the state (2020 Compilation by NYS-DEC).

Cyanobacteria have infested many other lakes throughout the country including the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Background

Cyanobacteria were some of the earliest forms of recognizable life, and the first photosynthesizing organisms, on the planet. They were responsible for adding oxygen (O2) to the Earth’s oxygen-free atmosphere approximately 3 billion years ago. Unlike algae, cyanobacteria contain gas vacuoles in their cellular tissues that enable them to regulate water column buoyancy. They occasionally float to gain superior access to sunlight in productive aquatic environments. Thus, cyanobacteria typically form unsightly surface scums that can accumulate along shorelines into rotten, smelly, goos of organic matter. They may also produce a variety of toxins that are health threats to humans and other warm-blooded animals (e.g., dogs). The toxin story is complicated. Not all cyanobacteria taxa synthesize toxins. Cyanobacteria taxa that synthesize toxins do not do it all the time. The environmental triggers that induce toxin production are poorly understood. To complicate the situation, different toxins are synthesized by different cyanobacteria taxa, and each toxin, in sufficient concentrations, can impact different parts (Cyanobacteria article continued on page 13) -12-

of the body, e.g., the skin, liver, gastrointestinal and/or nervous systems.

This article focuses on the data from my ongoing, multi-decade, water quality (WQ) monitoring program of the eight eastern Finger Lakes and other research projects that are pertinent to the development, occurrence, and proliferation of cyanobacteria in the Finger Lakes (Halfman, 2017, Halfman et al., 2021). The monitoring program collected water quality / limnological data from at least two deep water sites in each lake on a monthly basis from May through September, since 2005. Monitoring in Seneca Lake started in 1994, and occurs on a weekly monitoring surveying 4 sites. At each site, a Secchi disk depth, plankton tow, CTD profile (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, fluorescence, and turbidity), and surface and bottom water samples were collected, and the water analyzed for nutrients (TP, SRP, NOx, SiO2), chlorophyll, and total suspended solid concentrations in the lab.

More recently, weather stations, WQ sondes, and automated cameras collected nearshore meteorological, water quality and bloom occurrence data at a number of shoreline sites around Seneca and Owasco Lakes.

Plankton enumerations indicated that cyanobacteria have always been in the planktonic community in the Finger Lakes. The mean annual percentage of cyanobacteria compared to diatoms, green algae, dinoflagellates, and other taxa, enumerated from plankton tow samples have ranged from a few to just over 40% (Halfman, 2017). They were even in the plankton community in the earliest limnological surveys of some Finger Lakes by Birde and Juday in the mid-1900’s. Yet, something recently changed in these lakes so that they could proliferate in nearshore regions in the past decade.

The long-term monitoring program revealed the occasional excursion in total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphate and total suspended sediment concentrations by an order of magnitude above mean annual concentrations in the open lake (Halfman, 2017, Halfman et al., 2021). These excursions typically followed a very brief, but very intense, super-cell, thunderstorm that dropped over 5 inches of rain within a day onto a small, localized portion of a watershed, super-storms associated with global warming. When these events happened, they typically coincided with, provided a slug of nutrients for, an individual lakes, perhaps surpassing the tipping point for the initial blooms in the lake. These events are too infrequent to support every bloom, however.

What does? The following focuses on the preferred conditions for cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria Preferences

Cyanobacteria prefer the following water quality conditions:  warm water, temperatures between 15 to 30⁰C (60 and 80⁰F);  light levels that are sufficient for photosynthesis and growth;  lake stratification, as cyanobacteria buoyancy regulation provides a competitive edge in a warm, stratified water column;  calm or near-calm conditions as turbulence disrupts cyanobacteria buoyancy;  rainfall, as rain events deliver nutrients to the lake; and,  elevated (eutrophic) concentrations of nutrients, especially waters rich in phosphorus, the limiting nutrient for many cyanobacteria; Warm Water: Sur face water temper atur es measur ed since 1995 in Seneca Lake indicate a warming trend over the past two + decades (Fig. 1).

Maximum water temperatures detected in 2020 were the warmest in this dataset. The linear, best-fit line to the data suggests that the lake has warmed approximately 0.2°C/year, a result of Global Warming. The warming was not uniform but instead occurred in a step function with a few years occasionally deviating above and below the linear warming trend. Of interest here, water temperatures over the past five years were some of the warmest detected over the past two + decades, a timing coincident with cyanobacteria blooms. A similar warming trend that parallels bloom events was detected in Owasco and neighboring Finger Lakes. See my most recent annual HABs research report for more information (Halfman et al., 2021).

However, detailed surface-water temperatures recorded by loggers at shoreline locations and a mid-lake WQ monitoring buoy revealed that blooms occurred after the warmest temperatures of the summer and into the early fall (Fig. 2).

In fact, they typically occurred after a multi-day, few °C, dip in water temperature. It suggests that warmer temperatures by themselves were not the sole reason for cyanobacterial blooms. Warmer temperatures do promote increased biological respiration of dead organic matter, and increased nutrient recycling.

Perhaps HABs events must wait for the accumulation and subsequent release of sufficient nutrients, and thus blooms are delayed until after the warmest part of the summer season. The dip in water temperature is probably due to mixing of colder hypolimnetic (bottom) water into the warmer epilimnetic (surface) water by strong winds and their associated waves and/or an occasional rain event. Perhaps the wave-induced turbulence released nutrients from the nearshore sediments to help stimulate bloom development.

Sunny Skies and Calm Conditions: Sunny skies and calm weather fr equent the Finger Lakes in the summer, even during the late summer (Fig. 3).

However, blooms were not detected on every sunny and calm day, and when blooms were detected at one shoreline, they were not detected everywhere else. Wind speed and direction provide some control over the bloom temporal and spatial variability. For example, the 2019 and 2020 meteorological data from Owasco Lake indicate that average wind speed over the bloom season (Cyanobacteria article continued on page 17) -16-

decreased from 9 mph at the offshore buoy to 1.9 to 4.3 mph at the shoreline sites in 2019 and 2020. The shoreline configuration is key as it only allows winds to impact downwind (exposed) shorelines. The result, the shoreline sites experienced significantly calmer (<1.5 mph) conditions, from 3 to 4% of the time at the offshore buoy compared to 40 to 60% of the time along the shoreline. Wind rose diagrams revealed radically different dominate wind directions at the shoreline sites as well, ranging from northerly, westerly to southerly directions, compared to southerly winds at the offshore buoy site.

Thus, one shoreline might experience onshore winds, waves and turbulence and no surface blooms, whereas wind-free shorelines experienced favorable conditions. But even with sunny and calm conditions, these suitable shorelines may not experience a bloom.

Automated cameras photographed the lake surface every 10-minutes during the daylight hours and indicated that cyanobacteria are indeed fickle, and do not bloom every day when the shoreline experienced favorable conditions.

The photo logs also indicate that number of days with bloom events were not consistent from one site to the next, ranging from no blooms to 17 days with blooms. Blooms lasted from 20 minutes to 9 hours, averaged 2 to 3 hours, and were detected anytime during the daylight hours, peaking during the early afternoon. Finally, blooms, once formed, can be transported by longshore currents.

Nutrients: The availability of nutr ients must play an impor tant r ole in the bloom equation. Cyanobacteria blooms typically occur in lakes with elevated (eutrophic) concentrations of nutrients, especially waters rich in phosphorus, the limiting nutrient for most lakes. However, Skaneateles, Canandaigua and Keuka Lakes are ultraoligotrophic, i.e., very nutrient poor systems, and all three lakes have experienced cyanobacteria blooms. Cayuga, Seneca, Owasco, & Otisco are oligotrophic to borderline oligotrophic/mesotrophic systems. Only Honeoye Lake is eutrophic in the eight-lake survey. Owasco Lake provides an ideal example. Total phosphorus (TP) concentrations rarely exceed 20 ppm in the water column, the minimum concentration for eutrophic systems. TP in nearshore waters were also below 20 ppm, even shoreline locations where blooms were frequent. More importantly, these phosphorus concentrations are two or more orders of magnitude smaller that the amount of phosphorus within the biomass of an average cyanobacteria bloom. The water column lacks sufficient nutrients.

Sediment organic matter and macrophytes (rooted plants) are the next obvious nutrient sources to support cyanobacteria blooms. To test this, mud samples were collected from different water depths and placed in a flask with filtered lake water. The mud/water mixture was swirled simulating a mixing event by waves, and then placed on a sunlit window sill in the lab. All eight flasks experienced blooms within the next week or so. Thus, the sediments must contain sufficient nutrients and cyanobacteria resting stage cells to support bloom development. The zebra and quagga mussels provide an effective pathway to increase “nutrients” in the nearshore sediments through their “nearshore shunt”.

Biomass is transported from the open water to the nearshore zone as mussels filter feed on algae (open water nutrients) and deposit (poop) organic-rich debris in the nearshore muds. Finally, the locations that typically experience the most blooms have the most extensive shallow-water shelves, and by extrapolation, the most nearshore biomass.

Macrophytes utilize the nutrients in shallow-water sediments. Once the macrophytes die, waves typically concentrate the rotting plant matter along the downwind shoreline. The rotting biomass could be the source of nutrients for blooms. It is consistent with the delay in the bloom season to the end of the summer and their location, because the cyanobacteria were waiting on the decay of nearshore organics, and also the dominance of blooms along the downwind shoreline. In support, macrophytes were unfortunately (fortunately?) trapped inside the PVC deployment tube for a WQ sonde, and blocked the flow of water. In a few days, the dissolved oxygen concentration declined to anoxia inside the pipe, indicating extensive and isolated respiration of the plant matter.

Cyanobacteria concentrations rapidly increased inside the pipe as well over the subsequent week or so, suggesting the blooms utilized the nutrients released by the respiration of the plant matter. Photos of blooms along the shoreline taken by bloom watch volunteers frequently revealed rotting macrophytes along the beach. Finally, once each cyanobacteria bloom dies, the biomass provides the (Cyanobacteria article continued on page 28) -19-

drove through some states completely, camping in KOA’s to expedite our way to the Southwest region. Looking back, our favorite part of the trip remains the three days in Colorado, and, for the first time in ten years, we decided to head back, with our young son in tow.

Our favorite part of the trip was the climb to the top of Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs. We drove up to the 14,000 foot summit on a winding road that had the most beautiful view of the mountain range. Once we reached the top you could see the horizon of the clouds and feel the altitude difference, drastically.

We hiked briefly and enjoyed the views, before deciding to head to the gift shop for the famous Pike’s Peak bumper sticker.

Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship 35th Year Retrospective

Part 2: Origin and Trust Fund Contributions

As described in the Winter 2021 Newsletter, this year marks the 35th anniversary of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship Trust Fund. This article is the second of four planned articles (one article published in each of the 2021 Newsletters) to commemorate that milestone event. This article describes where the money donated to the Trust Fund originated. Subsequent planned articles include a new and updated profile of Angelo Tagliacozzo, what we hope to achieve in the future, and positive impacts of the scholarship on the recipients.

At the risk of repeating ourselves, we just want to say again that for some of you reading this article, the subject matter may be information you have heard before or know firsthand, but for many others, we suspect you may be hearing it for the first time. Regardless, we hope that everyone will find something of interest. We welcome comments and/or questions.

Near the back of every issue of the Newsletter and the Directory of Members, there is a List of Contributors to the Trust Fund. This list has been compiled based on the available records since the start of the scholarship program. Tracking of donors and donated amounts in the late 1980s was sketchy, incomplete, and perhaps some records have been lost.

We used what information we had to construct a composite record. As time went on, our record keeping process improved. Based on the records available, contributors to the Trust Fund are listed according to five donor categories. The highest donor category, Friend of the Fund , indicates cumulative contributions over $1,000. The next highest category is Benefactor (>$500), followed by Patron (>$250), Sponsor (>$125), Contributor (>$50) and Donor (<$50).

As you can see by looking at the list, most contributors are individuals.

These individuals are current and former NE Section members, family and friends of Angelo, and in a few cases, students. First and foremost, it has been a goal of the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Northeast Section AIPG to have every member of the NE Section contribute something to the Trust Fund. This has proven to be an elusive goal, but one we continue to

(35th Anniversary continued from page 22) strive to achieve. According to our records, we have been able to document contributions from approximately 110 individual members. Obviously, with over 556 members in the NE Section, we are far from achieving this, but it certainly gives us something to shoot for.

After individual donors, companies make up the second largest group of contributors. A total of 21 different companies have made significant contributions. Some of these companies no longer exist as separate entities, so some of the company names may not sound familiar, but many others still exist. Some of these companies are/were owned or managed by NEAIPG members (e.g., Aquifer Drilling and Testing; Leggette, Brashears & Graham; Roux Associates; Alpha Geoscience, StoneHill Environmental), other companies may have employed one or more members, others still may have provided services frequently used by members. Other company groups include advertisers in our Newsletter/Directory of Members, and sponsors of our Fall and Spring Meetings.

There have been multiple fund-raising drives for the Trust Fund, but perhaps none as enduring and as effective as the Yo u Can Count On Me campaign that started in 2002 and ran through 2003. A total of 75 individuals or companies contributed a total of $8,595 during that campaign.

The largest single contributor has been the NE Section itself. The Northeast Section has hosted the AIPG Annual Meeting three times since the Trust Fund was formed - in 1993, 2004, and most recently in 2018. In each case, the NE Section donated all or a significant portion of the profits from these meetings to the Trust Fund. From inception of the Scholarship in 1986 and up until very recently, the NE Section matched the annual Award Pool with an equivalent contribution to the Perpetual Trust Fund . In other words, if the Award Pool was established at $6,000 or at $10,000, the NE Section donated $6,000 or $10,000 to the Trust Fund in that particular year. This was done so that the Trust Fund could continue to grow while still making annual awards.

After 35 years, the Trust Fund has grown to a point where, in a good stock market year, it can generate significant growth on its own. Our review of scholarship applications received every year have demonstrated a

(35th Anniversary continued from page 23) continuing and compelling need for financial assistance. This has led the Scholarship Committee to recommend and the Board of Trustees to approve an Award Pool that has generally increased over time. For example, in 2006 the Award Pool was $8,500, in 2011 it increased to $13,000, in 2016 it was $16,000, last year it was $20,000. This year, due to the overwhelming financial need that was demonstrated by the applicants in their applications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Scholarship Committee, ExCom, and Board of Trustees approved a significant increase in the Award Pool to $30,000! By attempting to better meet the financial needs of the student applicants, the NE Section no longer has the financial capability to match the Award Pool every year with an equivalent contribution, so a combination formula to fund the Award Pool has evolved. In this way and consistent with the original intent when the Trust Fund was started, every single dollar of actual contributions remains in the Trust Fund untouched, while a combination of growth/capital appreciation funds and NE Section funds are used to make up the Award Pool.

We cannot predict the size of the Award Pool next year or in future years, but we remain committed to protecting the financial viability of the Trust Fund. In doing so, we will also do all we can to meet the financial needs of the students applying for the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship.

If your name is not already on the List of Contributors, please consider making an annual contribution and help us move a little closer to achieving that elusive goal of 100% annual participation by NE Section members. No donation is too small (historically, we have received individual contributions of $1, $5, and $12). If your name is already on the list, consider making another contribution that might perhaps move you into the next higher donor category. If you want to contribute in other ways, please consider serving, now or at some time in the future, on the Scholarship Committee. resting cells and a source of nutrients for the next bloom. Thus, once a shoreline experiences a bloom, it will probably experience more blooms. Research in the coming years will investigate the nearshore abundance of macrophytes, mussels and the organics in the sediments.

A Final Unsettling Thought

Cyanobacteria concentrations in offshore, surface water samples have increased over time (Fig. 4). Have cyanobacteria learned to outcompete other algae in the nutrient poor surface waters away from the shoreline? Will these high concentrations persist across the entire lake’s surface in the years to come? Alternatively, did stronger winds in 2020, compared to earlier years, transport more cyanobacteria from the shoreline to the open water? Hopefully, the data from 2021 will shed more light on this issue.

Adventures in Winter Drilling: A Christmas Tale of Water Supply Exploration in the North Country

Koptiuch, CGWP—NE/AIPG Member 2798 In December of 2019, I was overseeing a water supply exploration project in the southern Adirondack Mountains along the northern Mohawk Escarpment in upstate New York. This is highly glaciated terrane, and we were drilling into about 125 -foot thick kame terrace deposits overlying a granitic gneiss bedrock. We’d already run several geophysical transects and installed a half-dozen small-diameter observation wells with a Geoprobe rig earlier in the month, so we had a fairly good picture of the stratigraphy. Our goal now was to set and develop several screened, 6” diameter test wells in the overburden upgradient of multiple natural spring sources. We would then conduct 5-step drawdown and 72 -hour constant discharge pumping tests on the wells to evaluate sustainable yield.

We were working on seven hundred acres of municipally-owned watershed lands, about ten miles from the nearest town. We had to bulldoze our own roads in to each well site, and then clear a drill pad in the forest large enough to accommodate our operation (about 75 x 100 feet). Our crew was from Andrews & Foster well drilling out of Athens, Texas, and their rig was a Hilyard, top-head drive with 5 x 6 Gardner Denver mud pump and Gardner Denver 427 cfm air compressor, all mounted on an articulated, all-wheel-drive/all-terrain buggy with a 453 Detroit Diesel engine.

To mix our mud, we staged a 2” trash pump in a spring run, a half-mile and 200’ lower in elevation from the drilling pad. We’d fill a 250 gallon poly tank with the trash pump and shuttle it up to the pad with a Bobcat skid-steer loader.

There was over a foot of frost in the ground already, and we were dealing with 2.5 -feet of snow cover, along with bitter temperatures; days would get up into the low single digits, but at night it was falling well below zero. Needless to say, everything is slower and harder in conditions like this, and staying safe, warm, and frost-bite free was a constant challenge.

Getting the machinery started and warmed up enough to run smoothly each day was often a two or three hour process in and of itself. As a result, we typically would end up working well past dark (4:15 PM at that latitude in late December) and buttoning up the site around 7:00 PM each night after putting in 12 to 14 hours in the cold.

Christmas was a Wednesday that year. We worked through the weekend before and buttoned up the site on Monday the 23rd. We had run casing down to bedrock at about 110-feet and decided to leave the rig in place over the hole so that we’d be ready to build the well on our return, the Friday after New Year’s. We lowered the mast, closed everything up, winterized the machinery, and secured a steel plate over the open casing. I sent my crew back to Texas for the holidays (where they basked in relative warmth) and headed home to Vermont.

Two days after Christmas, a heavy storm laden with lake-effect snows from Lake Ontario blew in from the west. Another 2 feet of snow was dumped on the region and 65 to 70 MPH winds toppled thousands of trees, resulting in power outages over vast swaths of the north country. When the storm subsided, I decided to make the drive back to check on our equipment at the site. It was Monday, December 30th. Power remained out everywhere. Many roads were still closed due to downed trees on power lines and heavy snow cover. It took me seven hours to make the 4 hour drive; I was in 4-wheel drive the entire time, and had to stop multiple times to clear trees from the road with my chainsaw.

When I finally arrived at the site, the main access road had not been plowed (because it’s not maintained by the town from December 31st through April 1st), but I was able to drive in about a mile to our main staging area with my pickup. From there it was another mile on foot with snowshoes to the drill pad. On seeing the rig, my heart sank, as I could see a huge, 2-foot diameter, red pine tree, that had once towered about 120-feet above the drill pad, had snapped off perhaps 45-feet above grade and landed square across the mast.

On closer inspection, I was relieved to see only minor damage/bending to the mast and nothing that appeared structurally weakening; the deep snow on and around the rig had cushioned the blow. By then, it was almost dark; I’d been on the road all day and was fairly worn out. I worked my way back out of the site and drove about twenty miles to the nearest hotel; they were booked solid with utility crew workers who were trying to get power back up for all of the hinterlands, but I managed to secure the last available room.

The hotel had a backup generator and they were the only place with power for miles; luckily, they had a restaurant on the premises, because nothing else was open anywhere to get a meal.

In the morning, I made my way back to the site and was able to clear the tree off the rig with a few judicious chainsaw cuts. By mid-day, I was on my way back home to Vermont for New Year’s. The following Monday, my crew was back from Texas. We managed to get all of the equipment inspected and running. The mast was fully functional, with no other damage beyond a few minor bends. We spent the next two weeks completing the project, with no further incidents.

Exploration drilling always has its challenges, and winter operations tend to bring them on in spades, but I’ll take six weeks in the cold mapping out new opportunities and resources over Photo 7: Digging out! six months sitting behind a desk in the office, any chance that I can get!

THE RAMON CRATER

By Michael Greenman, CPG – 10441 In April-May, 2018, I had the opportunity to do an active tour of Israel. I had been to Israel before, and saw the usual tourist sites. On this trip, we enjoyed the natural wonders of the country. This included hikes up to the heights overlooking the Sea of Galilee, bike riding in a bird sanctuary, rafting down the Jordan River, hiking wadis in the Dead Sea area, walking up streams, and off-roading in the some remote areas, along with hikes.

Most of these locations were in National Parks and regional parks. The trip covered most of Israel from the Golan Heights in the north to the Negev Desert in the South. The trip was done in the spring to avoid the desert heat. Oddly, it was very hot in the north, and we nearly froze in the southern desert.

One of the more interesting geologic locations we visited was the Ramon Crater (Maktesh Ramon). The crater, located in the more northerly part of the Negev, is named for Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut who died in the Columbia shuttle disaster. The crater is shown as the green outlined area in the map below. The only settlement in the area is Mitzpe Ramon, which was our base for touring the area.

The crater is not of volcanic or impact origin. It is a completely erosional feature, and is the world’s largest erosional cirque. It is approximately 25 miles long, with a width of 1 – 6 miles.

At its lowest point, it is 1600 feet below its rim. A paved road cuts across the crater and allows entry for vehicles; however, to view the interior, one must go off road.

Our tour began before dawn, in order to see the sun come up over the crater rim. Note the long shadows. The ride began with a wellmaintained paved road. After a short time, we turned off on to a bumpy desert floor for several miles. On the previous day, we had toured the museum and the overlooks at the rim of the crater, which are part of Israel’s largest national park. Hundreds of million years ago, the Negev was covered by a sea which started to recede and leave a hump shaped hill. The hill was slowly flattened by climatic forces. 5 million years ago, a rift valley was formed, which led to rivers changing their courses, and the rivers began to erode the interior of the crater. The rocks in the interior were much less resistant than the outer walls, and led to the rapid erosion to a depth of 1600 feet (500 meters). At its lowest point, there is a spring which is the only natural water source. This helps to sustain the animal life in the crater. The crater was along a trade route that led to the port of Gaza on the Mediterranean. There are ruins of a caravansary, near the spring, which served the traders on their route.

Rocks consist of sandstone, clay formations, and intrusive igneous dikes and basalt flows. Ammonite fossils are common and range in size from small to tractor tire size. The larger ones have all been removed leaving only the smaller pieces.

Brandon Tufano—MEM 2954 You don’t always get to choose when a life event is going to upend everything, but I can certainly recommend waiting until after a pandemic—if possible. With that being said, almost a year ago to the day of me writing this, the pandemic was bearing down on NYC in full force. Doors were closing, the world seemed to be shutting down, and I was cramming my life into a hatchback. Granted, when you’re living in NYC, that’s not all too difficult! For a number of reasons, “the mountains were calling, and I had to go,” and so off I went to start a new life in Colorado.

After three days of driving and two uncomfortable nights in my car at rest stops (trying to avoid human contact at ALL costs), I found myself quarantined in a studio apartment, going through orientation with a new company. As jarring as the experience was, I was fortunate: I was employed and in a state with plenty of open air spaces, something that I think we all have come to appreciate more this last year. Exploring the endless geology of Colorado has been a treat, and, over the last year, my good fortune has continued as my projects continue to provide new and interesting work ranging from HRSC and injection well installation to planning river sediment investigations and logging the ever familiar soils exposed from an acetate liner. Here's to hoping everyone's fortune is on the rise, as we hopefully begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A Good Walk and Some Interesting Geology

The Brownfield’s Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) held its annual scholarship fundraiser on March 14 with a geo/ eco hike to Buttermilk Falls in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. About 20 participants braved the cool temperatures, residual snow and ice, closed roads, and brisk winds to do about an eight mile walk through the Valley & Ridge Province of far northwestern New Jersey. Buttermilk Falls is reportedly the tallest waterfall in New Jersey.

The first half of the hike started on the Silurian Poxono Island Formation, a greenish grey dolomite, and ended after an easy two-mile stroll along a semi-paved road from the parking area to the base of the falls. The second half of the trek was more difficult, switch-backing up about 900 feet of Bloomsburg Red Beds, another Silurian age formation consisting of greyish-red, thin-to-thick bedded, massive siltstone and sandstone, to the top of Kittatinny Mountain (the Ridge in the Valley & Ridge Province). Buttermilk Falls, a tributary of Flatrock Brook, provided a robust soundtrack during most of the semi-arduous climb. The falls drops down the side of the ridge in a series of steps formed as the running water exploits the high angle bedding planes and joints present in the rock. Once on top of the ridge, the hike continued another few miles to Hemlock Pond, a glacial kettle lake. Along the way, the ecologist pointed out sweet birch (which provides one of the active ingredients in spearmint flavored gum), pitch pine (used as a water-proofing agent by early settlers), mountain laurel, and hemlock trees, lots and lots of hemlock trees. Overall a nice stretch of the legs in good company for a worthy cause.

DRONE COURSE NE-AIPG is pleased to announce the availability of its online/virtual short course in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. This two hour lecture qualifies for two technical LSRP, LSP, and PG licensure credits and is being taught by one of the leading experts in the scientific use of drone technology: Dr. Francisco J. Artigas Ph.D., the Director of New Jersey’s Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute.

The use of unmanned aerial data collection devices (drones) has become a standard tool for many scientific disciplines. Depending upon their mission, drones are equipped to collect data on air quality, land use, water characteristics, and vegetation status.

Drones are being and will be used to support site remediation projects in numerous ways, including accessing potential areas of environmental concern within complexes or sites that are inaccessible; the collection of baseline air emissions data from disposal sites (e.g., methane discharge from landfills) or routine monitoring of air emissions during or after remediation; and tracking of stressed vegetation, surface water runoff pathways, and thermal signatures indicative of subsurface reactions.

Drones also are being used to confirm daily cut and fill excavation limits and to establish pre- and post-surface topography at remediation sites. While many geologists have seen drones operate and use the data they generate, this course will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanics of their operation, the regulatory restrictions associated with drone usage, and the type of data packages they can generate. This will allow end users to make informed decisions on when or if drone collected data would be useful and how those data will be processed.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO MEMORIAL GEOLOGICAL SCHOLARSHIP 2020 – 2021 ACADEMIC YEAR FINAL STATUS REPORT Dennis G. McGrath and Kelly Weyer Co-Chairs, Scholarship Committee This year’s scholarship committee (Christopher Brown, Jeff Frederick, Mike Grifasi, Sam Gowan, Dean Herrick, Adelina Prentice, Tom West, and the two of us) completed a review and evaluation of 15 scholarship applications received in December, 2020. Evaluation criteria include financial need, academic transcript and qualifications, career goals, achievements (e.g., awards, projects, publications, senior thesis, etc.), and the faculty recommendation letter. Financial need and academic qualifications were weighed more heavily than the other factors in accordance with the weighting scheme that has been used now for many years. The committee then convened via teleconference to discuss the overall ratings, recommend an award pool, and select the award recipients.

We received another outstanding group of student applicants. While academic achievement does not assure an applicant of receiving a scholarship, all 15 applicants maintained greater than a 3.4 (out of 4.0) overall cumulative grade point average (gpa); five applicants maintained better than a 3.9 gpa! The academic qualifications presented by the applicants were outstanding, and many of the financial needs were compelling. This year the applicants were asked to explain in their student letter, how COVID-19 had affected the pursuit of their degree. The results of the evaluations among the nine committee members varied on the applicant receiving the highest score, but consistent in the determination of critical financial need from a majority of the applicants. The award amount for this year was chosen after considering quality of the applicants, performance of the trust fund over the past year, and the overall financial health of the NE Section. An award pool of $30,000 was selected as an appropriate award amount; individual awards are shown below. New York State Council of Professional Geologists Continuing Education Updates

On Thursday, April 1, 2021, NYSCPG provided a presentation on recent updates to continuing education requirements for New York State Professional Geologists. Our panelists included NYSCPG Director James J. Janora, P.G. (Jim) and Peter B. O'Connell, Esq. (Peter). Jim is a partner at McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineering and Geology, P.C., Secretary for the Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists (BAPG), and the Chairperson for the NYSCPG’s Legislative Committee since 2019.

Peter is NYSCPG’s lobbyist.

Thanks to Alpha Analytical for hosting this timely webinar which had approximately 400 registrants. Celebrating 35 Years of Scholarships!

The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship was established by the Northeast Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists in late 1986.

The first Scholarships were presented to undergraduate Geology students in 1987.

ATMGS recognizes the dedicated leadership and service which Angelo provided to NE/AIPG, to AIPG, and to the geological profession, until his untimely passing on October 11, 1986. The Scholarship furthers Angelo's goal of acquainting young geologists with AIPG and with AIPG's importance to the geological profession.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO (1936 - 1986)

Angelo Tagliacozzo received his doctorate in Geology from the University of Rome (Italy) in 1962. Thereafter, he worked in various positions as geologist, geophysicist, and hydrogeologist, which included assignments abroad, in the U.S., and with the United Nations. Angelo provided exemplary service to AIPG at the Section and National levels. He was a Northeast Section Executive Committee Member (19731982), Vice President (1977-1978), President (1979-1980), National Advisory Board Delegate (1981-1982), and Screening Board Chairman (1984-1986). Angelo's dedication to and leadership of the Northeast Section Screening Board has become the ultimate standard against which service in such a position is measured. Angelo also served as an AIPG National Executive Committeeman (1982); he was a vigorous advocate of measures to increase professionalism. Angelo was (and will be remembered as) a respected professional… and a friend.

THE SCHOLARSHIP

NE/AIPG grants Scholarships to undergraduate geology students annually. The Scholarships are designed to help with the cost of summer field courses, textbooks, and other aspects of geological education. Scholarships are awarded, both on academic achievement and on financial need, to students enrolled in recognized geology programs at colleges or universities in New England, New Jersey, & New York.
