2017 Presidential Ramblings #2 When we think of Plum Island, how many of us immediately think “Oh, no! Dangerous animal diseases!” Admit it—more than a handful of us think this way. How likely is it that any of us think “geology”? Believe it or not, there is some interesting geology to be found on the island.

When the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG) advertised a field trip last fall titled “The Geology of Plum Island,” I jumped at the chance. I’d heard about their animal disease research center and thought the island was off limits. And it is, to an extent.

However, our group was given permission to take a ferry and tour the island with a geology expert, as well as a representative from US Home(Ramblings continued on page 12)

land Security (yes, it was pretty serious stuff!).

On a beautiful early October day, we boarded a bus to Orient on the tip of the North Fork of Long Island, from which we met with folks from the Department of Homeland Security, who gave us a briefing before embarking on a ferry to Plum Island. We were given basic information on the do’s and don'ts of our visit, such as where we could and could not take pictures. After a short trip on the ferry, we arrived at the small, mysterious island, steeped in the notoriety of its mission.

We were taken to a building where we met Tom Dwyer, Plum Island Animal Disease Center’s (PIADC) Manager and fellow LIAPG member, who gave us an introduction to the personnel, a briefing on their mission, and finally an introduction to the subject of why most of us were there in the first place—the geology of the island. Plum Island consists of approximately 840 acres, is approximately 2.9 miles long and varies in width from 0.2 miles at the eastern end to 1.7 miles on the western end. We were given some background information on the history of the island as well, in particular, its military history. It was purchased by the US Army in 1897 to create a coastal military fortification known as Fort Terry to protect the entrance to Long Island Sound. The fort was operational until World War II. plore) them during the field trip. The island and its facilities have been owned by the Department of Homeland Security since 2003. After this introduction, we boarded a bus for a roundtrip tour of the island, making stops along the way to check out some interesting geological features and historical remnants.

Due to its history as an animal disease research center at the forefront, many people aren’t aware of the interesting geology encountered on the island. If you’re familiar with Long Island geology, Plum Island can almost be called a microcosm of Long Island. The same geologic features and patterns thereof are found on this small island. There is good reason for this: both Plum Island and Long Island’s geological features are reflections of their shared glacial history. They are composed of deposits from the Hudson-Ontario lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, dating back to the Wisconsin stage of the late Pleistocene. One of the features formed via the glacier was the Harbor Hill moraine, a fairly high ridge which runs east from the North Fork of Long Island to Plum Island and beyond to Fishers Island. Here, rapid meltwater deposited large fans of stratified drift and gravel that comprise the moraine.

Some of these deposits were removed from Plum Island by a broad outwash channel as the glacier retreated northward again. A later readvance deposited a thin layer of unstratified silt, sand, gravel, and boulders on top of the previously deposited material. The thin, re-advancing ice was forced to ramp up over the accumulation of stratified drift. This caused most of the material to be deposited on the northern side of the ridge, creating the rocky north shore of Plum Island.

More recently, wave erosion removed vast amounts of the drift material and waves and tides have redeposited it in the form of low beach ridges at the southern part of the island. These ridges represent a succession of paleo-shorelines.

Meltwater scoured and filled the existing outwash channel with sand and gravel. This now serves the island as a sole-source, shallow aquifer that is recharged only by precipitation. There are also wetlands to be found on the island. They are groundwater discharge areas with a water table elevation of 0.5 to 1.0 feet above mean sea level (amsl), with (Ramblings continued on page 17)

the highest elevation around 2.5 feet amsl in the north-central area of the island. The aquifer is strictly protected from contamination and withdrawal to avoid saltwater intrusion, or upcoming is carefully managed.

The NE-Section Spring Meeting Synopsis The NE-AIPG Spring Meeting took place in Paterson, New Jersey, and was a joint meeting among AIPG and three other professional organizations of geologists and engineers. Joining the Northeast Section were members of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (New York-Philadelphia Chapter), the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG), and the New Jersey-NYC Post of Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). We also are grateful for corporate support from GEI Consultants, Hampton-Clarke Labs, and EnviroProbe Service, Inc. for sponsoring the meeting and donating to our “Angelo Fund” that provides scholarships to geology students throughout the Northeast Section.

The day started with the general business meeting for the NEAIPG Executive Committee. We met at the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park in Paterson, NJ, where we planned to hold the ExCom meeting at the Visitor’s Center. Like any typical day in the field, we geologists improvised when things didn’t go quite as planned. The conference room at the Visitor’s Center was in use for park ranger training, so the park ranger contacted the Paterson Museum staff, who graciously accepted us after only a phone call’s notice. We trekked around the block to the Paterson Historical Museum, which was on our list of places to visit anyway. The ExCom and a few guests took over a large room where we had plenty of room and exhibits decorating our meeting space.

Of course, many Northeast Section members also are members of other local and regional professional organizations, and this Spring’s ExCom meeting was attended by several of those crossmembership folks who also represent LIAPG, the HudsonMohawk Professional Geologists Association (HMPGA), and the New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG), which is the group that sponsored the recent legislation in New York State to license geologists. cal organizations, and we received positive feedback on NEAIPG’s leadership in bringing multiple groups together. (Stay tuned for upcoming news on the fall meeting.)

After the Executive Committee meeting, approximately 40 people met at the Paterson Great Falls Park overlook and enjoyed a sunny and very summer-like day (96°F). We had a guided tour by park personnel, where we viewed some of the former brick factories and infrastructure and also old water course “raceways” built during the 1800s. We viewed the basaltic cliffs of the waterfalls and walked along the trails flanking the river and connecting the urban environment. We learned about the rich industrial history of the area, including the various historical figures who helped develop Paterson as a planned industrial city after Alexander Hamilton championed its location and beautiful waterfalls along the Passaic River in 1792. We also heard about historical child labor abuses in the factories (some of the stories sounded like typical geology field hours with similar terrible conditions!).

After the guided portion, many people remained in the park strolling along the trails and taking photos. We then made our way to Riverside Manor restaurant where we enjoyed a “cold beverage” and networked among the four organizations. During the dinner buffet, a representative of each of the four organizations provided a brief introduction to their group and its mission. Section President Jessica McEachern spoke for NE-AIPG, Curt Schmidt (Vice Chair) represented AEG NY-Philly, Susan Thames introduced us to SAME, and Cheryl Neary (Director) said a few words on behalf of LIAPG. A special highlight of the evening for AIPG members was to honor the truly surprised and appreciative Bob Blauvelt with the Slayback Award for meritorious service to the Northeast Section “above and beyond” the call of duty. Former awardee Dick Young recounted some of Bob’s numerous contributions over many years, including Bob’s service as Section President, Treasurer (current), (Meeting continued on page 25) (Meeting continued on Page 25) -23-

ExCom Member, organizing the spring and fall Section meetings, serving as the Program Chair for the annual National Meeting in Saratoga Springs (2004), and organizing several very profitable short-courses that benefited the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship Fund, among many other accomplishments. Please look for Dick’s article on the Slayback Award elsewhere in this newsletter.

It was a packed agenda by the time the evening speaker was introduced. We were lucky to have Mr. Gianfranco (John) Archimede, City of Paterson, Director - Division of Historic Preservation, present us with an historical overview “The Creation of the Great Falls Historical District and National Park as a Catalyst for Development.” John is very knowledgeable and experienced, having an academic background and career interests in industrial archeology and urban planning. Among the area’s long history, a historical organization, the Society for Establishing Useful Manufacturers (S.U.M.), was instrumental in the early development of water power systems for industrial use that supported the various types of manufacturing into the 20th century.

Bob Blauvelt and his coworkers at GEI also are very familiar with the park because they helped Paterson redevelop the industrial area into the urban oasis and National Park it has become (and is still becoming) under the Brownfield Cleanup Program. The Great Falls National Historical Park is an example of cities like Paterson using their natural resource as a catalyst to spur community devel(Meeting continued on page 27)

opment and provide recreational facilities.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND APPEAL This year, we in the Northeast Section of AIPG (NE-AIPG) are celebrating a very important milestone: the 30th Anniversary of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Scholarship Fund.

NE-AIPG represents hundreds of members throughout New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. NE-AIPG member Angelo Tagliacozzo (1936 - 1986) served AIPG and the eight-state Northeast Executive Committee from 1974 until 1986, holding many officer and committee positions. We are proud that NE-AIPG has been awarding the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship in his memory to multiple applicants each year for 30 years!

The principal aim of the scholarship program is to offer financial support to current junior and senior undergraduate geology students, and to encourage serious and deserving students to continue their studies in the geological sciences. The focus on undergraduate students was selected in recognition of Angelo Tagliacozzo’s notable interest in having the NE-AIPG reach and assist young geologists as early as possible in their careers.

Incredibly, the Angelo Fund has awarded more than $212,000 to 178 students since the Fund was started in 1987. Through the good work of Dennis McGrath and the Scholarship Committee, the Section has built and maintained a network of contacts that include multiple professors at 82 schools, with geology programs among 8 states throughout the Northeast, to alert them about the scholarship and its requirements, as well as to send deadline reminders.

For 2017, there were 18 applicants representing 13 different colleges and universities. The Scholarship Committee selected 7 recipients from 5 of those schools to be awarded a total of $16,000 in 2017.

Over the past 6 years (including 2017), more than $102,000 has been awarded to a total of 45 deserving students. Individual awards have ranged from $1,000 to $5,000. Recipients are allowed to use the scholarship awards toward tuition, fees, field camp, or other costs directly related to their studies. Junior and senior undergraduate students majoring in a geological science at an accredited college or university in any of the 8 states that comprise the NE Section are eligible to apply for a scholarship.

We in the Section, especially those directly involved in the inner workings of the scholarship, have put a remarkable amount of time, care, and effort into this endeavor over the last 30 years. The Scholarship Committee is made up of 7 volunteers, all of whom are either officers or members of NE-AIPG. final selection of candidate students to receive a scholarship based on their review of an application form, an official transcript, and 2 letters. The first letter is required from the Department Chair or a faculty supervisor; the second letter is written by the student applicant. The scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of documented financial need and academic qualifications; career goals, projects, accomplishments, educational plans, and the faculty recommendation letter, are also considered.

It is important to note that the Angelo Fund (as we affectionately call it) was established as a non-profit, perpetual fund that preserves its principle investment and distributes only the appreciated portion of the fund, when necessary. The Northeast Section has further supported the scholarship by donating Section Funds every year for 30 years, so that both the principle and growth in the fund remains untouched to accelerate future appreciation.

We look forward to establishing the base level needed for the fund to be self-sustaining, and we have reached approximately 80% of that financial goal.

NYSCPG Legislative Update

By John M. Nadeau There is plenty of work ahead of NYSCPG and the Legislative and Transition Committees. The Legislative Committee is reviewing bills being introduced in the NYS Legislature for the 2017 session that may affect the geologic profession. As part of the continuing transition of NYSCPG, the committee will take more of an active role in offering opinions on legislation that may affect the profession or the public, involving geologic processes.

These bills and any opinions that NYSCPG takes on them will begin to be shared with the membership through the newsletter and our website.

New York State is in negotiations with the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) for facilitating the licensing exam for geologists in NY. Once a contract is finalized, NY will become a Member State of ASBOG and offer the Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and the Practice of Geology (PG) exams in locations to be determined across the state. The exams are offered twice a year in the months of March and October. NYSCPG is the initial stage of looking at ways to establish review courses for the ASBOG to assist our membership in preparing for the exams. Further details will be shared as we develop this program.

Questions continue to arise regarding the amendment conversion of corporations offering geological service. The amendment, listed in Chapter 260 of the New York State Laws of 2016, will allow a New York State established general business corporation to transition to a professional corporation (PC or DPC), or alternatively, for a NYS limited liability company (LLC) to become a professional limited liability company (“PLLC�). The amendment establishes an enforcement date of March 1, 2018, for (Update continued on page 50) -48-

persons and companies desiring to provide professional geological services in New York to have completed their licenses and articles of incorporation. After that date, no one can legally offer geologic services in NYS without the proper credentials.

Members of the Legislative Committee and NYSCPG as a whole continue to present educational talks at meeting across the state. The latest presentations offer insights into the licensing application process, and guidance for business owners of the pathways for converting their companies to continue offering geologic services. If your organization is interested in sponsoring a talk for your group, please contact a NYSCPG Director.

I will continue to share this important reminder. People need to be cognizant when licensed in other states and referring to themselves a Professional Geologist in NY until they obtain their NYS license. Now that the licensing law is effective in NY, to call oneself a PG in this state without the proper credentials is illegal and should be avoided. If your business card lists you as a PG, you need to make sure that you are licensed in the jurisdiction of the address of your business. If you currently are licensed in another state, you can refer to yourself as a PG only if you display the qualifying state (e.g. PG [any state]).

Geologists Develop Web App to Print 3-D Terrain Models of Any Place on Earth

Students can read all they want about geological folds, axial planes, hinge lines, antiformal synclines, and synformal anticlines. But it can still be a challenge to visualize just what geologists are talking about.

A better option is putting boots on the ground—such as a trip to Iowa State University's Carl F. Vondra Geology Field Station near Shell, Wyoming. The field station is in the north-central part of the state, on the western flank of the Bighorn Mountains. Nearby is Sheep Mountain, a well-known and typical anticline.

The Bighorn River has cut a canyon through the mountain and students can hike along the river to get a good look at a natural cross section of the exposed geological fold.

But most students aren't able to make a trip to Sheep Mountain.

So Iowa State researchers have come up with a new option: TouchTerrain.

The web application is open source and free for private use through Iowa State's GeoFabLab. It allows anybody with a 3-D printer to easily and quickly print terrain models of any place on the planet, including the ocean floor.

To demonstrate, Franek Hasiuk, an Iowa State assistant professor of geology and David Morehouse Faculty Fellow, placed four tiles of 3-D-printed plastic, each about 4 inches square, on the desk in front of him. Put them together, and there's a scale model of Sheep Mountain and its central ridge rising out of the Bighorn Basin.

That's a teaching tool that can help students see and touch an anticline—potentially a more powerful experience than studying a flat map or computer screen.

"This could be a key element in improving how geoscience students connect with the surface structure of Earth," said Chris Harding, an associate professor of geology and a member of Iowa State's program in human-computer interaction.

But, said Hasiuk, to be really useful, there has to be a fast, easy, and reliable way for people to make the terrain models.

A technology challenge: It's challenging to make 3-D terrain models that consistently print well on any commercial 3-D printer.

It requires an understanding of geographic information systems, computational geometry, design and manufacturing software, and 3-D printing technology.

The TouchTerrrain development team includes Harding, with expertise in geographic information systems; Hasiuk, with expertise in 3-D printing of geological samples; Alex Renner, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering with expertise in simulations for 3-D printing; and Levi Baber, a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Information Technology Manager with expertise in server technology.

Even if a teacher had experience with geographic information systems, computer-aided design software, and 3-D printing, Harding said it can be a lengthy and complex process to generate a good digital terrain model that can be 3-D printed.

It's an even bigger challenge to create models large enough for the classroom by making several tiles of, say, the Grand Canyon, and seamlessly fitting them all together.

"Our application makes it very easy to create physically large models by dividing the desired area into multiple tiles that can then be (Article continued on page 58) -57-

3-D printed separately and glued together to form a much larger 3-D map," Harding said.

Models for everybody: Visit the TouchTerrain website (http:// touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu/) and you see a terrain map with Wyoming's Sheep Mountain inside a red box.

You can zoom in and out of that map, moving the red box anywhere in the world. When you settle on an area to print, you can adjust a few simple settings to match your 3-D printer, hit export, and you'll get a file for your 3-D printer. And, if you want, the terrain can be exaggerated to accentuate subtle details.

Adjusting the application's digital models to a specific 3-D printer can be a big advantage for users.

"Why create a very large, high resolution model that takes a long time to process when a 3-D printer can only print out at a much lower resolution?" Harding said.

The cost of the resulting terrain models? Operating a 3-D printer (now available for less than $2,000) costs about $1 per hour. Printing out a square, 4-inch terrain model typically costs about $2, Harding said.

The Iowa State researchers hope the ease and low cost of TouchTerrrain models will enable more geoscience teachers to use 3-D printed materials in their classes. The researchers' next steps include enhancing the application's capabilities and creating a way for teachers to connect specific locations with specific geologic concepts.

Hasiuk picked up a red plastic terrain model of north-central Iowa, a rolling landform known as the Des Moines Lobe. He said that model showed the effects of glacial activity and also represented one of the best things about TouchTerrain.

The December 2016 meeting minutes were prepared and circulated by Michael Grifasi and Jennifer Becker. Minor edits were addressed. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Chris Brown, and a second by Michael Grifasi. Laurie Scheuing abstained and was not present for the December meeting. Meeting minutes were approved for publication in the newsletter, with the recommended edits.

Treasurer’s Report: 

The NE Section budget is currently in good standing and well positioned for 2017. The ATMGS fund currently increased $5,100 from November due to member donations and the fall meeting. December’s budget is the highest the fund has been all year since March 2016, and has increased approximately $20,000 from December 2015. Also, additional advertising revenue and donations from the fall meeting were brought into the section account in December. The Section Report will be filed with no motion.



The Draft 2017 Section Budget was reviewed and members provided feedback on funding allocations. In 2016 approximately $14,000 was allocated and a proposed $15,000 for the scholarship award for 2017 was set as a placeholder. This amount depends on the committee and other expenses. Additional budget propositions include keeping the advertising budget the same, having a budget of $3,000 for fundraising, and increasing the national dues allocation and donation to the (Minutes continued on page 62)

section. Dick Young recommended reconsidering the proposed national meeting budget and to discuss further. Michael Grifasi noted that the Section dues increase from $10 to $20 was not reflected from National. The issue will be discussed with National and discussed on a separate phone conference.

It was noted with the increase in student chapters projected in 2017, additional funding should be set aside for seed money.

Jeff Frederick indicated that section fundraising is dedicated to the Angelo Fund for future growth. Dick Young suggested that additional advertisers should be found to support the fundraising efforts. Dick explained that there are advertisers that paid for multiple years that have now expired and have to be followed up. Additionally there are outstanding checks from different vendors and companies due to a post office mix up. Bob Blauvelt suggested that we rent a PO Box if needed.

Correspondence/Student Chapters: Buffalo – Michael Grifasi is coordinating with the students on starting a chapter. The students are currently on break and Michael is working with Dennis to answer some of the questions that they have provided.  Cortland – Jennifer Becker will reach out to Cortland Chapter and have an update next meeting.  Binghamton – Chris Brown and Brandon Tufano are reaching out to the students to see if there is interest. 

Old Business:  Angelo Fund – Solicitation of Local/Regional Sister Organizations – Jessica explained that LIAPG showed interest in attending the next meeting. Jean commented that she will reach out to BAPG. New Business: Outreach to Potential Scholarship Partners – Dennis was not present for the meeting and an update will be provided at the next meeting.  Spring Meeting Planning – Michael Grifasi mentioned a potential location for a meeting in the upstate region could include a student outreach component and technical presentations. An example was provided that Cascade and EcoRental would be potential sponsors and would be willing to participate in a possible demonstration. Bob Blauvelt suggested Great Falls National Historical Park, in Paterson, NJ, which would include a walkthrough of the geology and industrial development around the falls. Bob spoke to a park ranger who could organize the walking tour, or possibly the City of Paterson Brownfields coordinator. If given enough notice, the field trip might also include a tour of the onsite hydro plant. We would need to look at alternatives for dinner venues because the Great Falls Museum cannot accommodate more than thirty people. Researchers at Tohoku University's Department of Geophysics, have been studying the deep earthquake which occurred on May 30, 2015, to the west of Japan's Bonin Islands The earthquake, which registered at about 670 km depth with moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.9, was the deepest global seismic event on record with Mw of 7.8. It was also an isolated event located over 100 km deeper than the mainstream seismic zones recorded so far.

In the Izu-Bonin region, the Pacific plate is subducting northwestward beneath the Philippine Sea plate. Subduction is a process where one of Earth's tectonic plates sinks under another. To date, several studies have investigated the source location of the Bonin deep earthquake relative to the subducting Pacific plate. But there have been conflicting results, because the mantle structure in and around the source zone is still unclear.

arrival-time data recorded by world-wide seismic stations to determine a high-resolution mantle tomography beneath the Izu-Bonin region. The stations included those from the dense seismic networks in Japan and East China.

Seismic tomography1 is an effective tool for investigating the three -dimensional (3-D) structure of Earth's interior, in particular, for clarifying the morphology and structure of subducting slabs2.

Using that method, the team received clear images of the subducting Pacific slab as a high-velocity zone, and showed that the Bonin deep event occurred within the Pacific slab, which is penetrating the lower mantle. Moreover, its hypocenter is located just beside the eastern slab boundary to the ambient mantle within the mantle transition zone3.

They also found that the Pacific slab is split at about 28° north latitude, i.e., slightly north of the 2015 deep event hypocenter. In the north, the slab is flat in the mantle transition zone. Whereas in the south, the slab is nearly vertical and directly penetrating the lower mantle.

These results suggest that this deep earthquake was caused by the joint effects of several factors. These include the Pacific slab's fast deep subduction, slab tearing, slab thermal variation, stress changes and phase transformations in the slab, as well as com(Article continued on page 77)

Robert P. Blauvelt, CPG-06508, was presented with the Northeast Sectionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest honor, the Russell G. Slayback Award, at the Spring Meeting on May 17, 2017.

Bobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service to NE/AIPG spans over 17 years, and is highlighted by his commitment to and continuing role as Treasurer, both of the Northeast Section and of its landmark Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship Perpetual Trust Fund (ATMGS-PTF) for 9 years. Congratulations and thank you for your service to the Northeast Section and to the profession of geology.”

In his Letter of Commendation to Bob, Dennis G. McGrath, CPG08578, (who previously received the Slayback Award for his own amazingly committed and protracted service to the Northeast Section of AIPG) wrote, in part: “Bob, we go back a long time. I have had the pleasure of working with you on projects, as well as AIPG-related business, for more than 30 years! I consider you to be a consummate professional geologist, a team player, a personal friend, and a most-worthy recipient of the Russell G. Slayback Award.

You brought a new level of detail and organization to the position of Treasurer that began by first preparing what has now become our annual budget. When the primary focus of the entire NE Section was planning for and hosting the 2004 Annual Meeting, you were deeply involved from the start in those planning and execution efforts. You were instrumental in finding and moving the Section’s website to a new web host, and currently you are leading the effort to move the scholarship application process to an online format.

From my vantage point, whenever the Section has needed someone to step up and undertake a difficult or time-consuming task, you have been there and you have done an outstanding job— whatever the task.

I have witnessed first-hand many of the ‘above and beyond’ contributions that you have made to the NE Section. Collectively, they truly make you a most deserving recipient of the Russell G. Slayback Award.”

But what I remember most was your input to change up the annual spring and fall meeting locations...Your lasting contributions to the Section over the past 15 years, both as a strong and effective leader and as a solid Section Treasurer, exemplify the spirit of the Slayback Award. Thank you for your numerous contributions to the Northeast Section.”

In his Letter of Commendation to Bob, Jeff Frederick, CPG-10989, (who served as President of the Northeast Section of AIPG, 20132016) wrote, in part: “Bob has single-handedly initiated and executed several shortcourses over the last several years, which have been tremendous fund-raising vehicles for the Section. His ability to predict market interest, design the curricula, and recruit the talent needed to execute these courses has been remarkable. And despite busy schedules and the frantic pace the consulting world sets, Bob is always ready to crack a smile and break the tension with a quick joke. We all benefit from Bob’s professionalism and hard work, and a select few are lucky enough to call him a friend.”

Concept of the Slayback Award The concept of the Slayback Award is to provide: "Honor and Recognition of Exemplary Service, Above and Beyond, To the Northeast Section of AIPG.” Thus, the Slayback Award is intended to be presented on those rare occasions when truly landmark, exemplary service has been given to the Northeast Section of AIPG for a protracted period of time by an AIPG Certified Professional Geologist who is a Member of the Northeast Section. Previous Recipients of the Slayback Award Both well before and since Angelo Tagliacozzo was honored with the Slayback Award in 2007, it had been clearly recognized that there were several NE/AIPG Section Geologists who are long-serving and highlydeserving of the Slayback Award. A series of health, life, and work issues precluded the previous Slayback Award recipients from proceeding with presentation of the Slayback Award to these individuals but beginning in the Spring of 2015, the opportunity to honor those exceptional NE/AIPG Members was resumed.

Russ Slayback, CPG-02305 - The Slayback Award was created to honor Russ Slayback, CPG, for his remarkable service, commitment, and dedication to the Northeast Section...which included numerous, longstanding roles on the Executive Committee, leadership in fulfilling various Offices of the Section, remarkable, long-standing commitment as Newsletter Editor for many years, and protracted Service to the Section, in uncountable ways.

Dick Young, CPG-03356 - On October 18, 2000, the Slayback Award was presented to Dick, in honor of his service to NE/AIPG on the Executive Committee since 1980 and his leadership in fulfilling various Offices of the Section. Special emphasis was placed on Dickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership in the creation both of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship and of the Perpetual Trust Fund to provide for those Scholarships.

Dick was recognized for dual roles as Publisher & as Advertising Sales Manager of the Newsletter and the Directory of Members, both since 1980.

The Slayback Award was presented at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship and the Perpetual Trust Fund.

Dennis McGrath, CPG-08578 - On May 14, 2015, the Slayback Award was presented to Dennis, in honor of his long, extensive service to NE/ AIPG on the Executive Committee and his leadership in fulfilling various Offices of the Section. Special emphasis was placed on the amazing leadership contributions that Dennis has made to the solicitation and screening of applicants and to the selection of deserving recipients for the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship, as well as fund-raising for the 2004 AIPG Annual/National Meeting.

Dan St. Germain, CPG-07858 - On May 14, 2015, the Slayback Award was presented to Dan, in honor of his 15+ years of service to NE/AIPG on the Executive Committee, as President, and in multiple leadership roles. Special recognition was noted for the dedicated leadership contributions that Dan made (as NE/AIPG’s Co-Chair) to the practical and financial success of the 2004 AIPG Annual/National Meeting, and the resulting major contribution that was given to the Perpetual Trust Fund for the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship. Dan’s service to National AIPG included his work as President-Elect, President, and Past-President.

Tom West, CPG-08935 - On October 14, 2015, the Slayback Award was presented to Tom, in honor of his 18+ years of continuing service to NE/AIPG on the Executive Committee, with special recognition of his unprecedented 13+ years of service as Secretary. Tom’s dedicated leadership contributions also include nearly two decades of service, both on the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship Committee and in preparing for Section Meetings, as well as landmark leadership in planning for the 2004 AIPG Annual Meeting.

Curt Kraemer, CPG-06019 - On May 18, 2016, the Slayback Award was presented to Curt, in honor of his service to NE/AIPG spanning over 28 years...and being highlighted by his essential and continuing role as Editor of the Directory of Members for 19+ years. This particular volunteer work by Curt has been instrumental in aiding the geographically-diverse membership of the Northeast Section to have an “On The Desk-Top” reference to connect with and to refer to other Section Members, as well as a compendium of the various Professional Fields of Practice. Celebrating 30 Years of Scholarships!

The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship The Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship was established by the Northeast Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists in late 1986. The first Scholarships were presented to undergraduate Geology students in 1987.

ATMGS recognizes the dedicated leadership and service which Angelo provided to NE/ AIPG, to AIPG, and to the geological profession, until his untimely passing on October 11, 1986. The Scholarship furthers Angelo's goal of acquainting young geologists with AIPG and with AIPG's importance to the geological profession.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO (1936 - 1986) Angelo Tagliacozzo received his doctorate in Geology from the University of Rome (Italy) in 1962. Thereafter, he worked in various positions as geologist, geophysicist, and hydrogeologist, which included assignments abroad, in the U.S., and with the United Nations. Angelo provided exemplary service to AIPG at the Section and National levels. He was a Northeast Section Executive Committee Member (1973-1982), Vice President (1977-1978), President (1979-1980), National Advisory Board Delegate (1981 -1982), and Screening Board Chairman (1984-1986). Angelo's dedication to and leadership of the Northeast Section Screening Board has become the ultimate standard against which service in such a position is measured. Angelo also served as an AIPG National Executive Committeeman (1982); he was a vigorous advocate of measures to increase professionalism. Angelo was (and will be remembered as) a respected professional...and a friend.

THE SCHOLARSHIP NE/AIPG grants Scholarships to undergraduate geology students annually. The Scholarships are designed to help with the cost of summer field courses, textbooks, and other aspects of geological education. Scholarships are awarded, both on academic achievement and on financial need, to students enrolled in recognized geology programs at colleges or universities in New England, New Jersey, & NY. YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS Your participation is encouraged in support of this dynamic memorial to Angelo and his recognition of the importance of AIPG to the geological profession.
