WELCOME

A LETTER FROM YOUR MEDIA & PUBLICATIONS CHAIR Hello, everyone!

After what feels like the longest two years of all our lives, we are finally gearing up for an in-person annual conference. What better way to do that but to have it be our 1st Joint Conference with MACUHO! I know I am very excited and privileged to attend and cannot wait to be surrounded by the positive energy this organization can bring.

I hope that as we make the trek to Pennsylvania, we use it as a time to reflect on the last year and a half and the impact it has had on our field.

What was once the norm to be together in crowded spaces, or to be in the office from dawn till dusk is now met with boughts of physical space, more screen time than ever, and the question of hybrid remote time lingering in the distance. What have we learned from the challenges we've had to overcome? What have we been forced to find solutions for when we didn't realize a problem was there? I think that this time of reconnection will help us see the solutions that were hiding and I look forward to learning from colleagues that may have found better ways of doing that to continue learning and growing.

Although we won't all be together next week, I hope the spirit of reconnection and creativity reaches each part of our region and we can move into the latter half of this semester with clarity.

I'm sad to say that this will be my last NEACUHO Navigator edition as your M&P Chairperson.

Professionally my roles have shifted and my time on the board will end at the conference next week. I hope that future editions are full of the creativity, thoughtfulness, and support that I have been able to witness in my almost three years in the role and I look forward to reading what comes next.

See y'all in Pennsylvania! I hope everyone is happy, safe, healthy, and ready to roll.

Hello NEACUHO! As we near the Joint Annual Conference with MACUHO in a little over a week, we are excitedly preparing the final details and look forward to welcoming some of you to our event.

While we are still managing aspects of a pandemic, supporting students in their everneeding growth, and many other new functions I am confident those attending will gain some new perspectives, network with others, and engage in some outstanding educational programs.

As we put the final touches on this conference, it is also my last letter and time to say goodbye as the Associations President. I will give my formal outgoing speech at the banquet during the conference but have enjoyed my time serving in this role during this very unique and challenging time. I am thrilled to continue serving the association over the next year as Past President and giving back to this amazing region.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the conference and if you are there, please come say hello!

FROM THE NEACUHO CONFERENCE CO-CHAIR Our joint annual conference is only days away! We are excited to welcome our members and our colleagues from MACUHO to the Kalahari Resorts in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania.

1. We have over 200 registrants and over 40 vendors registered for our in-person experience!

2. We have some amazing VIPS coming, including our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Christopher Irvining, and our Experts in Residence, Dr. Delmy Lendof and Dr. Kyle Warren. They will be present throughout the conference to provide opportunities for thoughtfulness and development.

3. We are bringing you a great pre-conference, including a pre-conference keynote with Nancy Mah Chau, on October 12. The theme of our pre-conference is Creating Supportive and Affirming Places of Work: Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Residence Life.

4. We will be having affinity group experiences for members, including Trans/Gender Non Conforming, Physical, Mental, & Neuro Diverse, BIPOC, BIPOC Women, LGBTQIA+, Women, Parenting, and LGBTQIA+ BIOPIC. 5. Our conference schedule at a glance and programming guide have been published and are ready to go!

6. Finally, based on the feedback, we have adopted the following COVID-19 expectations for our conference: All conference attendees will be expected to wear a mask during conference events (e.g. meetings, educational sessions, awards ceremonies, etc. etc.). The exception to this expectation will be for eating and drinking. Vaccinated presenters will be encouraged to wear their masks but may choose to not wear it during their respective sessions.

It has been an absolute pleasure to serve NEACUHO and MACUHO in this capacity. I hope that you are able to come and if you are not able to, you will be missed! On behalf of my co-chair, Jackie Cetera from Bucknell University, thank you for your participation, euthansism, and the opportunity to help us "Innovate Together."

CATCHING UP WITH THE KEYNOTE DR. CHRISTOPHER IRVING

1. What is your favorite memory working in a college setting?

My last evening as a RA and sitting with my colleagues on my staff. I had such a great experience as an RA and loved my staff members.

2. What was your first professional conference/favorite professional conference attendance?

I went to the MAPC conference and received several offers to be a Residence Director. It showed me that I had a future in this field if I wanted to.

3. How would you suggest people go about getting connected professionally? Any advice?

Be authentic and honest with yourself and where you would like to see yourself in your future. Also, you have to allow yourself to make mistakes along the way as well.

4. What are you listening to right now?

Hamilton Mix Tape, 90's/2000's Hip-Hop on Spotify 5. What are you reading?

While Justice Sleeps by Stacy Abrams 6. What is your favorite downtime activity?

Travel...Travel...Travel.

The learning process since I have only been in the job for one month but also the projects I am working on.

2. How do you stay engaged with current trends in the field?

Webinars, reading, conversations with colleagues.

3. What do you see as the next big area Higher Ed will need to address?

Increase in demand for student support services and need for hybrid learning and staffing models 4. Any advice on how to best set professional goals?

Write them down, share them with others that can help you stay focused and hold you accountable

5. What are you listening to right now?

Christian music is always good for my soul 6. What are you reading?

Lots of institutional documents and books focused on working with a population of students in the arts 7. What is your favorite down time activity?

LEARN ABOUT THE EXPERTS IN RESIDENCE DR. KYLE WARREN 1. What keeps you motivated in your current position?

No two days are alike within my role – I enjoy the problem-solving aspects of my work just as much as I enjoy the planning piece. As well, I remain motivated in my work as each day I see decisions made by my teams having a positive influence on the experience and development of students.

2. How do you stay engaged with current trends in the field?

I remain engaged by keeping up with the Chronicle, exploring new scholarly articles on various topics in higher education, reviewing new/innovative job postings for ideas, and engaging in meaningful conversation with colleagues.

3. What do you see as the next big area Higher Ed will need to address?

This has certainly been a concern throughout the history of higher education, however, recent world events have tested the time with which it takes the industry to enact meaningful change.

The pandemic proved that swift change can happen, but that change was born out of a dire, urgent, and existential need. It will be important to examine meaningful and needed change within higher education that may not carry the sense of urgency of a pandemic, but change that is nonetheless important.

4. Any advice on how to best set professional goals?

Talk to mentors, consider what you love (not necessarily what others expect of you), commit to the path and not only the destination.

5. What are you listening to right now?

The news (hold your judgment!) and the new Drake album (also hold your judgment!)

6. What are you reading?

At this moment, re-reading The Last Lecture (Randy Pausch).

7. What is your favorite down time activity?

Going out with friends or doing nothing around the house.
