ND Regional Education Association 2016

Page 1

The mission of NDREA is to support and strengthen education in North Dakota. What is the NDREA?

The NDREA is a network of the eight Regional Education Associations* (REAs) across North Dakota.

Who are members of the NDREA?

The NDREA’s primary members are the REA Directors. Other members include REA lead administrators and representatives from other organizations that help to advance the NDREA’s mission.

What does the NDREA do?

The NDREA promotes collaboration among the eight North Dakota REAs in order to produce higher degrees of statewide resource efficiency and program and service effectiveness than might otherwise be achieved by individual REAs operating independently. *A Regional Education Association (REA) is a group of school districts seeking to improve their educational programs and services through cooperation and pooling of resources. There are eight REAs in North Dakota, and 96% of all the public school districts in the state, are members of an REA. About 98% of all public school students in the state are served by an REA. Each REA offers unique programs and services based on the needs of the region. Beginning in 2011, all the REAs began working toward consistent offerings of high quality programs and services in the areas of professional development, technology support, data systems support, school improvement support, and curriculum enrichment.

GNWEC - Northwest Career Expo

The Northwest Career Expo brings in roughly 600 high school students from 13 high schools in Northwest ND for a day of career exploration. Over 50 presenters speaking on careers from culinary arts to autobody repair & painting, to health sciences, to welding. This event provides sophomore and junior high school students an opportunity to ask questions of the professionals in the career fields they might be interested in learning more about, better preparing them for their future direction once they leave high school.

MDEC - Health and Wellness Initiative

In partnership with the N.D. Department of Health, the MDEC is raising awareness and building school capacity to help students stay active and engaged in their learning. Working with representatives from all MDEC schools and numerous community organizations, it’s developing plans to enhance learning through activity, brain research, and nutrition and wellness. It offers opportunities such as indoor recess, archery training, coaches clinics, nutrition courses, trauma sensitve schools and suicide prevention.

MREC - Career and Technical Education (CTE)

The Missouri River Area Career and Technical Center (MRACTC) is a collaborative effort between the MREC and Bismarck Public Schools to expand CTE educational opportunities through online and ITV courses for college and career preparation, as well as to help qualify students for the state CTE or academic scholarship. 475 enrolled students from 24 MREC member high schools and 12 additional high schools utilize courses in agriculture, aviation, electronics, family & consumer sciences, graphic arts, information technology, marketing, medical-related careers and STEM.

NCEC - STEM Investigation Team

Through collaboration between NCEC and Dakota College at Bottineau, college students mentor public school students with STEM academic enrichment. Each year, over 2,000 students and educators participate in hands-on activities: iPad star gazing, 3-D NASA dome, water festival, paper robotics, water bodies, rocket launch, and career fair readiness. These activities allow young students to gain knowledge and apply their skills while the college students create new learning and develop leadership skills.

NESC - Writing Workshop Series

Over the last three years, the NESC has worked with curriculum developer, Steve Dunn, to deliver a five-day, standards-aligned Writing Workshop series for nearly 300, K-12 teachers from 19 NESC-member districts. Participants received embedded, professional learning, gaining strategies for increased/improved classroom writing. 40+ principals also received support in leading, observing and sustaining implementation of strategies. Nearly 100% of participants reported increased understanding of the N.D. State Writing Standards, increased confidence as teachers of writing, and improved student performance.

RESP - Pathways to Reading (PTR)

PTR, a curriculum for beginning readers in grades K-2 and struggling readers in upper grades, asks the critical question, “What must be learned in order to transform the printed letters on the page to words that have meaning?” It’s primary focus, guided by 40+ years of research, is to help teachers understand, and apply in the classroom, five scientifically validated core components of the reading process: phonemic awareness; phonics; fluency; vocabulary; and comprehension. RESP training reached six member districts with small/large group instructional strategies, assessments and lesson plans.

RRVEC - Shared Teaching and Learning Initiatives

The RRVEC facilitates common learning initiatives such as writing, math strategies aligned to the North Dakota State Standards, and the Marzano Framework for both principal and teacher evaluations. The Succeed 2020 grant has given RRVEC the opportunity to focus additional efforts toward project-based learning and STEM activities for our schools.

SEEC - Just in Time Mathematics (JiT Math)

JiT Math teaches content, pedagogy and coaching to teachers, grades 4-8, in seven of the eight REAs across North Dakota. This two-year professional learning experience focuses on teaching and learning the N.D. State Standards for mathematics. Each session incorporates grade-specific content along with practice standards through the lens of best teaching and learning strategies. The 2015-16 cohort had nearly 250 teachers from around the state participating. JiT Math is led by the SEEC and supported through a Succeed 2020 grant.
