How to use this document Professional Learning Overviews for Enrollment • Use this document to review all potential professional learning opportunities through Items to note: the South East Education Cooperative (SEEC). Each opportunity is dependent on a

Registration

Once the SEEC has a completed calendar, all opportunities will be ready for registration through its online registration system, escWorks. All districts must have their teachers/teams register online through escWorks to officially reserve their spot!

Customized, On-site Professional Learning

The SEEC can provide schools and/or districts with customized professional learning. These sessions can be conducted during staff meetings, late-starts, early-outs or full-day sessions. Please include your request or questions in the “Additional Support” section of the enrollment survey and the appropriate SEEC staff member will reach out to you.

Who is SEEC?

The South East Education Cooperative (SEEC) is one of eight Regional Education Associations (REAs) in North Dakota. Its membership includes 35 public school districts and three private schools in the southeast portion of N.D. Through these members the SEEC serves over 35,000 N.D. students. REAs strive to offer consistent high-quality programs and services in the areas of professional development, technology support, data systems support, school improvement support, and curriculum enrichment that reflect the needs of its region.

This training is designed to give you the tools you need to introduce formative assessment practices to others and then to manage professional development with the book Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning, 2/e as the central text. We have three broad goals for the session: • To deepen your understanding of high-impact formative assessment practices • To prepare you to introduce these practices to others • To prepare you to plan and manage learning–team-based study to implement formative assessment practices in your school or district. • Grade Level: K-12 Teachers The professional learning seeks to build a deep and far-reaching understanding of the difference between sound and unsound classroom assessment, promoting the effective use of assessment as a teaching tool. By blending the foundational keys to quality classroom assessment found in Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right and Using It Well (2011), and the practical implementation of assessment for learning strategies found in Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning this course provides teachers with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of classroom assessment practices. The first year of training will help afterschool programs understand how to build foundations and relationships while the second year focuses on the implementation of the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards.

Developing a Data Mindset

The purpose of this two-part project is to guide the effective utilization of local and standardized assessment data to inform decisions and actions relevant to individual student, classroom and school-wide improvements. Formerly known as the N.D. SEED Project, this project is aimed at developing a data-driven culture within schools.

• Grade Level: K-12 • Team Based (Average size: 5-10 people) • Leadership Team: Administrators, Instructional Coaches, Counselors, Teacher Leaders Today’s educational leaders recognize the need for data utilization to make appropriate instructional decisions. However, before data can be effectively utilized, it must be understood and valued. This project will establish or enhance school/district cultural and collaborative processes to build the foundation needed prior to making evidence-based decisions. Upon completion of this project, schools/districts will be prepared to take action with data in Part II. Participants will: • Establish or enhance a data team to guide the work • Develop a district data vision. • Reflect on current data/assessment reality in the district to identify gaps compared to the district vision. • Develop the capacity of the district data team to collaborate for the creation of key foundational components that establish a culture of data for the district. • Create a customized “Taking Action with Data” (Part 2) professional development plan that transfers foundational data culture components staff-wide

The program seeks to provide educators with an opportunity for professional growth, collegial dialogue, support and guidance. Key ideas meant to trigger discussion include active learning strategies, state standards, classroom assessment and responding to student needs. Modeled after our highly engaging Beginning Teacher Network sessions, we are excited to offer this opportunity for ALL SEEC teachers with two or more years of experience.

• Grade Level: K-6 (elementary) or 6-12 (secondary) • Team based (Average size: 6-10 people) • 1 building administrator REQUIRED per team • General education content area teachers, special education teachers, reading specialists, instructional coaches The goals of this project are to become familiar with and implement research-based literacy strategies that will increase student achievement for learners in grades K-6 (elementary cohort) and grades 6-12 (secondary cohort). Dr. Kevin Feldman, the lead trainer for this project, is the past director of reading and intervention for the Sonoma County Office of Education and an independent educational consultant working with districts across the country. He has more than 40 years of experience in education with a primary focus on accelerating literacy of struggling readers, English language learners and students with disabilities.

Some trainers are a bit more flexible in their delivery and will work with you to meet your needs. • Grade Level: K-12 all staff These five modules focus on the effects of childhood trauma and its impact on student behavior and learning; review traumasensitive strategies for educators; discuss the impact of trauma on staff; and describe a framework for creating a “trauma-informed” school culture. Each module takes approximately one hour to deliver. Frequently two modules are delivered at one time. This is a locally designed professional learning out of PATH in Fargo with funding from N.D. Department of Public Instruction.

Adaptable to individual school environments, the PAL Learning System begins with a one-day in person leadership workshop, but does not end there. PALs are set up for success with 12 months of continued learning and support in an online learning community where PALs and trainers from all across the country engage. • Grade Level: Elementary or Secondary Teachers, Physical Education Teachers, Administrators • TEAM: Each school building will be asked to designate a Physical Activity Leader (PAL) who will most likely be a physical education teacher. Each building will also need to establish a Wellness Team. • Participant minimum: 5 school buildings | Participant maximum: 10 school buildings The Healthy Schools Program is an opportunity that will focus on increasing the opportunities students have to be physically active while at school and improving the school nutrition environment. Each cohort is asked to make a 3 year commitment. Physical Activity Leaders (PAL) will be required to participate in trainings such as: Physical Activity Leader (PAL)/Comprehensive School Physical Activity Plan (CSPAP), FitnessGram/PYFP/Physical Best, and possible Interactive Health Technologies (IHT) if a grant funding for devices and software is secured. Other trainings will be scheduled throughout the 3 year time-period. The Wellness Team will be asked to meet at least quarterly, work together to complete a School Health Index, participate in provided trainings, and support the update of school health and wellness policies. Participants will complete the year with: • Implementation of a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) • Improved physical fitness levels of students • Delivery of quality nutrition education curriculum • Creation of healthier learning environments for students *If grant funds are not secured, schools will be responsible for covering the cost of the Interactive Health Technologies (IHT) software of $300/year. SEEC has been working with Interactive Health Technologies (IHT) to provide a solution to easily collect, manage and report Presidential Youth Fitness Program data. The Healthy Schools Program has set a goal to have the number of students scoring in the “Healthy Fit Zone” for the PACER. Active Schools initiative and the classroom teacher’s role in Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs (CSPAPs). This course is an in-depth study of the essential components associated with implementation of a school-wide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Primary focus will be given to the development and use of elements used as part of a three-tier instructional model including the establishment of: (1) effective systems, (2) universal screening, (3) researchbased interventions, and (4) problem solving for systems, groups, and individual students. Emphasis will be given to translating current educational research into practice to help schools maximize resources and outcomes for all students, including those with disabilities. Examples of data systems for universal screening and progress monitoring will be identified. Specific reading and math interventions (that really work) and examples of successful models will be discussed.

When those in positions of power and authority come from a class with rules different from those they work with, understanding and communication often break down. This workshop will help teachers and other service providers obtain new ideas on how to work with a growing part of their classrooms and client base we well as better assist the under resourced learner. Prerequisite to Part 2. • Understand the key points of poverty such as poverty is relative. • Understand how family structure can affect student learning and motivation. • Learn how hidden rules can block communication between educators, students, and parents. • Learn how casual and formal register of language can inhibit communication in the classroom and with parents. • Discuss which resources are missing in many of our students and how than can affect learning and school attendance. • Look at a variety of discipline strategies which may provide a better structure for students from poverty. • Understand the reason some students will work for you only if they like you.
