The Science of Success For those of you living in North Dakota and reading this issue of the Alumni Review, chances are you have heard or seen the phrase – The Science of Success – sometime in Brad Barth the past year. For those of you living outside of North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota – welcome to NDSCS’s new tagline. The NDSCS Marketing Department, directed by Barbara SpaethBaum, has put together an outstanding marketing campaign with all of the standard marketing elements – television, radio, billboards, as well as today’s social media outlets, Facebook, You-Tube and Twitter. The Science of Success is not only a great tagline, it is an excellent description of the world-class education that the administration, faculty and staff provide

students. Many of you have commented at meet-and-greets and other Alumni events that the education you received at NDSCS led to the success in your own careers or business ventures. We ask that you help us spread the word about NDSCS and how it delivers on its promise of – The Science of Success.

We continue to work diligently in the Alumni/Foundation office to coordinate the events and activities that help our Alumni and friends rekindle the passion they had for NDSCS. A great time to do just that is at our annual Homecoming celebration, taking place September 2324, 2011. (See pages 11-12 for all of this year’s activities.) I would like to personally congratulate all of our 2011 Homecoming award winners, they are all richly deserving of the honor bestowed upon them.

Alumnus of the Year

B

ernard “Bernie” Meyer, a native of Fairmount, N.D., grew up helping on the family farm and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1951. Bernie enrolled at Bernard Meyer NDSSS in 1951 where he lettered in basketball and football.

He graduated in 1953 with a Pre-Commerce degree.

Following graduation, Bernie enlisted in the Army and was trained as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Ky. In 1955, he was honorably discharged and returned home to marry the love of his life, Ms. Lethe Neubauer, a native of Tyler,

N.D., and a graduate of Wahpeton High School. Bernie and Lethe moved to Miami, Fla., where he pursued a bachelor’s degree at the University of Miami while working night shifts as a parking attendant for the Allright Corporation. Lethe was employed by Delta Airlines. Bernie completed his degree from the University of Miami in Business Administration in just three years.

retirements, Bernie and Lethe lived in Wahpeton, N.D., and in The Woodlands, a community north of Houston. During their time together they had three sons, Bradley (Jenny) of Woodbridge, Va., and their two daughters Elana and Lillian; Steve (Erin) of Rosemount, Minn.; and Joseph (Samantha) of Mariposa, Calif. Lethe passed away in 2007 from cancer.

After graduating, Bernie began his career with the Allright Corporation, which lasted 43-years. He began as a city and state manager for operations in Alabama, served as a regional manager, and then as a corporate division manager. In 1991, Bernie was promoted to the position of president – quite a leap for the former part-time parking attendant!

In addition to being a strong supporter of the Wahpeton community, Bernie has been an active and passionate supporter of NDSCS. He has served on the board of directors of the Letterwinners Club and continues to serve on the Foundation. He is also an active contributor and supporter of the Catbackers Club and Foundation 300 Club. He is a member of the American Legion and the St. John’s Catholic Church. He is a past member of Rotary International, Junior Chamber of Commerce and a former president of the National Parking Association.

arold and Patty Sauter, of Manfred N.D., and their ten children are being honored with this year’s A Family Tradition award. Harold Sauter was very influential in his family’s education, as he didn’t have the opportunity to attend college himself. The Sauter children began their tradition with six children attending NDSCS and several spouses and their children. The youngest Sauter son passed away at the age of 12 from leukemia. Harold Sauter passed away in October 2010.

Patty Sauter commented, “The education my children received at NDSCS was excellent and has been very beneficial in where they are at in their lives today.”

Karen Sauter Dahlgren (Legal Secretary, ‘78), of Wahpeton, N.D., began her career at NDSSS in 1977 working in financial aid, alumni and counseling services and is currently working in the Academic Services Center. Her husband, Robin (Plumbing, ‘76), works for the city of Wahpeton.

Kathy Sauter’s son, Kevin Peters, is a 2005 graduate from the Business Management program. Kevin is employed with

Mark is employed at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Julie is a financial consultant for Standard Technology Inc. They reside in Rapid City, S.D. Wildcats of the Year art & linda grochow

B

eing a true NDSCS Wildcat means demonstrating a passion and dedication to everything NDSCS. This year’s Wildcats of the Year do just that!

When Don Engen, former NDSCS athletic director, asked Art Grochow to become involved with NDSCS, little did Art know how addicting being a Wildcat would be. Art, and his wife Linda, have been active in everything from running the scoreboard at basketball games, making meals for workers during holiday tournaments, attending Wildcat sporting events, taking part in performing arts activities to volunteering for the Alumni/ Foundation DREAMS Auction. They show the true spirit of being a Wildcat.

Friend of the College

Kip Christensen

K

ip Christiansen’s actions speak volumes of his true friendship to NDSCS, which is why he is being honored as the 2011 Friend of the College. Kip has been a reliable volunteer at the annual DREAMS Auction. “You never have to ask him twice and he is a great asset to this event,” says Kim Nelson, NDSCS Alumni/ Foundation donor development manager.

Kip is also a member of the Catbackers Club and volunteers his time at many other college functions. Beyond NDSCS, Kip volunteers as a sports official, helps with the Wahpeton youth baseball and basketball programs and has been a volunteer for the 5th and 6th grade football programs.

Kip is a Wahpeton native and a 1985 NDSSS Liberal Arts graduate. He attended the University of North Dakota where he

received his b a c h e l o r ’s degree in Finance. In 1991, he returned to Wahpeton as the manager of Poet’s Warehouse Liquors.

Poet’s was Kip Christensen sold to Econofoods in 2010; Kip is currently the manager of the new Econo Wine & Spirits. Kip and his wife, Laurie Yaggie Christensen, reside in Wahpeton and have two sons, Eric (17) and Jack (15).

Art & Linda Grochow

Art, a graduate of Minot State University, received his Masters of Education at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. He taught and coached at various places in North Dakota, and in 1993 accepted the position of elementary principal in Wahpeton, retiring after 33 years in education. Art also enjoyed working for Action Realtors until 2010. Linda has been employed by Durlyn Herman, a State Farm Agent, since 1993. She also volunteers with Riveredge Hospice.

They have one daughter, Nicole, who graduated from NDSCS with an Administrative Assistant degree. Art and Linda commented, “We are happy to be living in Wahpeton and truly love being part of the Wildcat family.”

egardless of snow, sleet or rain, Bob and Mary Gette are fixtures at NDSCS events. It is only fitting that they be honored as the 2011 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshalls. Bob joined NDSSS in 1965, teaching in the Business Administration and Computer Science Departments. In 1978, Bob became dean of the Arts, Science and Business Division, and in 1989 was named vice president for academic affairs, a position he held until retiring in 2002. Since retiring, he has served as a consultant on many NDSCS projects. Bob was named NDSCS Vice President Emeritus in 2006. Mary is active in Women’s Literary Club, Friends of the Library and Catholic Daughters. She serves as a food pantry, church office and nursing home volunteer. She worked at Community First National Bank for 25 years, retiring in 2002.

Bob and Mary have been married for 47 years. They have two children, son David (Sarah) of Somers, N.Y., and their three children, Olivia (6) and twins Andrew and Zachary (3); and daughter, Michelle (Greg) Davis of Savage, Minn., and their daughters Norah (6) and Sophia (4).

Bob and Mary have been NDSCS Catbackers and DREAMS Auction committee members. Bob was a member of the American Technical Education Association, American Career and Technical Education Association and North Dakota Vocational Education Association, where he was recognized Educator of the Year in 1999. He has served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and has served as campaign chairman for the United Way. He was a Kiwanis Club member for 24 years and is a former St. John’s School Board member.

Commitment to Excellence terry Marohl

erry Marohl, associate professor and department chair of the NDSCS Diesel Technology Department, is this year’s Commitment to Excellence award winner.

Terry is an excellent leader for his department and is a role model to his students. Terry has developed creative ways to promote Diesel Technology and all of technical education. He initiated the highly-successful NDSCS Career Awareness Seminar, which brings forty high school instructors, counselors and principals to campus each summer for several days of handson learning.

Auction DREAMS Auction 2012 - April 13, 2012!

W

e would like to thank all of the NDSCS supporters that attended the 16th Annual DREAMS Auction. DREAMS 2012 will take place on Friday, April 13, 2012 – mark your calendars!

The DREAMS Auction is held every year on the second Friday of April. It has evolved over the years into a college and community event that draws 250 volunteers and brings in over 700 attendees, including alumni, friends, college staff and business partners.

Terry has been instrumental in deepening the relationship between the Diesel Technology Department and key business and industry partners.

As a result, his department has two formal partnership programs, John Deere Tech and Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician, in addition to many informal partnership agreements. Terry was recently named the American Technical Education Association’s Outstanding Technical Teacher. This award recognizes full-time, post-secondary technical instructors from across the nation whose performance and contributions are exceptional.

Terry and his wife, Carmen, reside in Mooreton, N.D., and are the parents of three children, Adam, Alex and Hattie.

Foundation Board

The Alumni/Foundation Board is comprised of approximately twenty volunteer board members that meet four times a year to provide guidance to the Foundation director and staff. The mission of the Foundation is, “To support and assist those activities that develop and strengthen the North Dakota State College of Science.” The Foundation Board is pleased to welcome the following new board members.

Bartholomew (Bart) Schouweiler grew up in Fairmount, N.D. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2008, and received a bachelor’s degree in Business and Public Administration. He has been employed at Peoples State Bank since 2008 as a loan officer. Bart is married to Kate, who is currently attending UND. Bart’s hobbies revolve around his family, friends and golf.

Annette Loken lives in Breckenridge, Minn., with her husband, Kent, and their two children, Kristina and Ryan. Since 2002, Annette has been a business banker at Wells Fargo in Wahpeton. She was previously employed with Farm Credit System, Wahpeton, in the business and insurance departments from 1986 to 2002. Annette is a graduate of Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn., with a degree in Business Communications.

Some of you have volunteered to be somewhat of a “regional ambassador for NDSCS” in your geographic area. So, we are taking you up on your offer .

As a “regional ambassador” you will work with an Alumni/Foundation staff member to plan and organize an alumni event in your area, such as: alumni meetand-greet, happy hour/social hour, golf or sporting event outing to name just a few.

Tim Neumann

Tim Neumann was born and raised in Peshtigo, Wisc. He attended Northern Michigan, in Marquette, for three years where he wrestled and studied for teaching and coaching degrees. In 1978, Tim transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he wrestled and graduated in 1980. Tim taught at a high school for two years in Plainville, Kan., before returning to Nebraska as an assistant wrestling coach. He became head coach in 1985, and held the position for 15 years. Tim entered the financial services industry in 2000 starting with Principal Financial Group, Bank of the West in Wahpeton, and is currently employed by American Federal Bank in Wahpeton. Tim and his wife, Janet, have seven children and four grandchildren.

reate a NASCAR-Like Program represents the direction that NDSCS President John Richman is driving the program chairmen and chairwomen at NDSCS. His intention is for every program to have one or two major business sponsors/partners.

Today, state funding is at a crossroads.

The cost of education is increasing and students are looking for value with their educational dollars. This has resulted in the need for NDSCS to find businesses that understand and are willing to partner with

programs and build relationships in order to continue to educate and train a highlyskilled technician.

A lasting memory: Dr. Gayle Miller

M

adeline Miller (’48) and Perry Miller (’81) created a lasting memorial this spring by helping to fund the Gayle Miller Softball Complex on the NDSCS campus. Future softball players will use this complex for decades to come. To better understand the person behind the name, we have included Gayle’s biography.

The late Dr. Gayle Miller grew up in rural Richland County, attending her first years of elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse.

She graduated from Wahpeton High School, and attended NDSSS, graduating with honors in 1974 with a Business Administration degree.

She continued her education at Moorhead State University and Palmer Chiropractic College in

Gives Back

din Stutrud, a 1941 NDSSS Printing graduate and former faculty member from Watford City, N.D., has endowed a scholarship in memory of his late wife, Hazel. The Odin and Hazel Stutrud Scholarship will be awarded to NDSCS students in need of financial assistance that have identified a career choice. Preference will be given to those whose home residence is in McKenzie County, N.D. Odin felt that the time was right to honor his wife by establishing the scholarship.

“NDSCS has been a big part of my life through the years and I wanted to put the scholarship in place, to honor Hazel and to help many others in the years to come,” commented Odin, “Science is a great college and hopefully this scholarship will give many deserving students some financial help.”

Odin’s initial work experience with a local newspaper led him to enroll at NDSSS in 8

1939. Odin enjoyed participating in boxing as a middleweight and had an undefeated record in 1940-41. His first job, upon graduating from NDSSS, was in Eureka, S.D., at Northwest Blade. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Odin served four years in the Army.

After 28 months overseas, Odin earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Odin and Hazel were married in 1944 during a 10-day furlough.

In the following years, Odin worked in the newspaper industry before he was offered a position as an instructor in the Printing

Davenport, Iowa, graduating magna cum laude in 1981. She practiced chiropractic medicine in Arkansas, where she was elected president of the Arkansas Chiropractic Association. She was appointed to the State Board of Health by then Governor Bill Clinton, the first female and first chiropractor to serve on that board. She was chosen by her peers as the top Chiropractic Physician in Arkansas and an Outstanding Citizen by the Arkansas State Jaycees. Gayle was very proud of her North Dakota roots. Dr. Miller died of leukemia in 1989 at the age of 35. We would like to extend a special thanks to the Miller family for their support of NDSCS athletics.

Department at NDSSS. After thirteen years as an instructor, Odin went on to become a North Dakota trade, technical and health education teacher, traveling the state certifying teachers. He was also the director of the American Technical Association. Odin is a graduate of Industrial Arts from South Dakota State Teacher’s College and received his master’s degree in Vocational Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Odin retired in 1984 and has remained active in local community programs. He enjoys traveling to see his children, Christine (John) Tinker of Eleva, Wisc.; Nissa (Lex) Tinker-Sacket of Eau Claire, Wisc., and their five children, Austen, Faith, Abram, Eleanor and Jack; and son Mark (Susan) of St. Paul, Minn., is the founder and president of Summit Brewing Co.

Vernon Hektner

t is with great sorrow that NDSCS bid goodbye to a beloved friend, Vernon Hektner, who passed away October 3, 2010.

Vernon’s long history with Vernon Hektner NDSSS began in 1939 when he enrolled as a student. His love of learning was fueled by teachers and mentors Frank McMahon, Edith Larson and Wally Nordgaard. He found great inspiration in history and literature. NDSSS was only the first step in Vernon’s collegiate career.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College and a master’s degree from the University of Colorado.

Vernon returned to NDSSS in 1946 as an instructor. In 1956, he was named dean of the Junior College, where he remained until 1982 when he returned to full-time teaching. Vernon retired in 1984 and was named Dean Emeritus. On November

18, 1997, the old gymnasium, one of the original historical buildings on the oval, was renamed Hektner Hall.

Vernon remained an active member of the NDSCS community in the years following his retirement. From homecoming events and commencement programs, to alumni socials and award banquets, Vernon proudly represented alumni and former faculty. “Vernon was a pillar of our campus and our community,” said Dr. John Richman. “He remained committed, dedicated and involved in our campus and provided a genuine interest in our future endeavors.”

Vernon Hektner was truly an icon for NDSCS, in that he represented all of the characteristics that make this college unique. The Alumni/Foundation recognized Vernon as one who was consistently mentioned, meant a great deal and will be missed.

I

n discussions with the many alumni who have made the decision to give back to NDSCS, I’m constantly asked – where do you suggest I give? My response to all of them is to support your NDSCS passions.

This invariably ends up in a long discussion with many stories about Wildcat athletics, Wildcat Singers or Stage Band, Student Senate or CAB, or maybe time spent in Old Main or Bute Gym. It might be a story about a faculty member who listened and made a difference in the alum’s life. Many times it is a recollection of how a staff member took them under their wing and helped the student through tough times.

For others it is about the life-long friends they met on campus or the education they received and how it impacted their lives.

In the end, they find the passion they want to give back to.

So, if you are thinking of remembering NDSCS in your will or have had a great year and want to give back to NDSCS for helping make it happen, just – support your NDSCS passions.

DSCS has a vision for the future. It’s a vision that builds upon our long-standing, rich tradition of developing people by educating, training and preparing indiDr. John Richman viduals for successful careers. And it’s a vision that we need your understanding and support to achieve.

NDSCS was founded in 1903, and we’ve remained strong because of our dedication to two basic principles.

First, we’ve adhered to a sound and grounded mission. While the exact wording of our mission has changed over the years, its core, the purpose it defines, has remained constant. NDSCS exists to attract, educate, train, develop, graduate and place individuals through career and technical programs, transfer programs and workforce training.

We have fulfilled that role by consistently and reliably providing a safe, clean, healthy, green, world-class educational environment.

Second, we’ve been flexible. NDSCS has always understood that change is necessary, and throughout our history we have approached both challenges and opportunities in a purposeful, thoughtful manner. By doing so, we have successfully adapted over time.

2011 LETTERWINNER INDUCTEES Daniel Shultis of Fargo, N.D., started as quarterback for the Wildcats for the 1996 and 1997 seasons.

During these two years Dan was All Conference, MVP, Captain, Best Offensive Back, 2nd Daniel Shultis Team All-American and 1st Team Academic AllAmerican. From NDSCS he moved onto NDSU and the University of St. Catherine, finalizing his academic education with a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. Dan is employed by Fargo North as a physical education instructor, assistant varsity football coach, junior high golf coach and head boys basketball coach, where he earned 2006 Coach of Year. Dan is married to former Wildcat Jaclyn (Sanden), they have two sons, Carson and Michael.

Justin Cobb was a hard-running tailback for the Wildcats in the same 1996 and 1997 seasons, earning the following honors: All Region Team (twice), Outstanding Running Back, Preseason 1st Team Justin Cobb All-American and in ‘96 received the Black Student Union certificate for having a high grade-point average. Justin is employed by the City of Racine, Wis., and is a co-owner of New Visions, an adult group home. He has given back to his community by helping local youth without support systems at home. He was able to coach a group of young athletes from 4th grade to their sophomore year. The majority of these student/athletes went on to attend college. Justin was named Optimist Coach of the Year in 2003.

Michael Dunn

Michael (Mick) Dunn (Mr. Talent) was a starting center for the Wildcat football team for the 1969-71 seasons, and is presently an acclaimed artist. Mick earned All-NDCAC (which was a four year

conference), Best Team Spirit Award and was a teammate motivator. After NDSCS, he attended Valley City State University earning a double major in Physical Education and Art and later a Masters of Studio Art from Moorhead. A few of Mick’s post-NDSSS honors include: Moorhead Senior High Teacher of the Year, Certificate of Merit Award (VCSU), NDSCS Alumnus of the Year and 2008 Artist of the Year. Mick’s art is available to view at Michael@studiodonline. com. Mick and wife, Ellen, have two children, Heather and Michael, both of Fargo and a granddaughter, Rayna.

Sue (Singelmann) Smith played volleyball, basketball and track for the Wildcats from 1981-83. During those two seasons the volleyball team was Region 13 runner-up and the track team Sue Smith won Region 13. Sue earned several awards, including: leading scorer, All-State team (twice), All-Region team, Wildcat MVP and co-captain. She went on to play for the Bison until injuring her Achilles tendon.

That injury slowed her down, but did not stop her. She returned to Breckenridge and served as athletic director, volleyball coach and basketball coach for St. Mary’s, served in the National Guard and reached the rank of Sergeant E-5, was an assistant basketball coach for NDSCS, and was recently named head girls basketball coach at Breckenridge High School.

Sue and husband of 26 years, Darryl, have five children, Lindsay, Savannah, Ethan, Blaze and Daymon, and three grandchildren Trey, Jaxson, and Jayden.

Arden Anderson played third base for the Wildcats from 1960-61.

Since those days, records and honors have “faded from memory,” but his involvement in sports that are played on a diamond (baseball and softball) has not. For 30-plus

years, Arden has played, officiated, authored bylaws, organized new softball associations and has actively served as a board member on state and local alliances.

Arden was selected to assume the position of Arden Anderson Wahpeton’s city auditor, which he performed distinguishably for 35 years. He served North Dakota by his involvement in the North Dakota League of Cities and Municipal Finance Officers Association, which lead to his appointment in the North Dakota House of Representative and in 2006, the State Senate. Arden has been involved in the resurrection of the Bois de Sioux Golf course since the 1997 flood. He and his wife, Marilyn, enjoy supporting high school and Wildcats athletics. They shared the Wildcat Booster of the Year award in 1997. Their children are Janet (Peterson), James, and Jodi (Bogenrief ).

Team Hall of Fame: 2001-02 Wildcat Volleyball Team The 2001 volleyball team had a record of 40-8 while capturing the Region 13 and District G Championship. This team produced 56 school records, two All-Americans, two AllRegion 13 All-Tournament Team members, and three player nominations to the National All-Tournament Team. The Wildcats finished runner-up in the National Volleyball Tournament.
