Message from the President

we have a rich history and legacy to protect and carry on. We also listed being a SND school as an opportunity. With the average age of the Sisters being 79 years old, as laypeople, we have the opportunity as well as the responsibility to make sure we are keeping their strong Catholic schools they have built profoundly intact, and their legacy alive and vibrant. Our new strategic plan will include measurable steps to ensure this happens.

Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year!

As we begin the new school year, I write to share several significant updates and key pieces of information with you. First, our Notre Dame dashboard looks amazing, with our enrollment thriving and growing. NDCL is welcoming 170 to the freshman class, and NDES and NDMS are welcoming 99 new students K – 8 and 40 new preschoolers. Having just completed a remarkably successful capital campaign, I am pleased to share that through the generosity of many of you, and our devoted donors, approximately $11.2 million dollars has been raised and invested in athletic facilities, science labs, and a new middle school wing. The middle school construction has begun, and we are planning to celebrate its grand opening in January 2025. Our endowment fund remains strong with $18.5 Million.

While Notre Dame Schools are thriving, The Board of Directors and I also realize that success is not arbitrary, and the time has come for a new strategic plan. Consequently, several members of Board of Directors have joined school administrators to begin the process of a new strategic plan to continually move us toward our vision to:

Engage students from preschool through high school in an exceptional Catholic education. Focus on loving, respecting, and educating all to discover and develop their God-given talents and challenging our students to respond faithfully to Jesus’ call to transform the world by consciously doing good and bringing hope to the hearts of all.

As with any sound strategic planning process, we began by looking at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. While we listed many items in each of those four categories, two of them emerged worth sharing with you. One key strength of Notre Dame Schools is the fact that we are a Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) School and with that distinction

The second item which emerged from the S.W.O.T. analysis and was highlighted as an opportunity and threat is Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are all affected by AI, both in our personal and professional lives, by AI. AI is a strength for us because AI can adapt to the learning style, pace of individual students, and provide real-time feedback. However, there are data privacy concerns and a concern with students becoming dependent on technology. Most importantly, AI lacks the human touch – the affective side of education. Since our Notre Dame Schools excel in creating a warm and inviting environment and culture for each individual student, we want to make sure we use AI as a strength and be aware and address the disadvantages of AI.

To illustrate this point, I summarized the remarks I wanted to make in this column in an AI application, and within just seconds the following appeared on my screen:

It is great to hear that Notre Dame School is embarking on a new phase of strategic planning with such a strong vision in mind. The focus on providing an exceptional Catholic education and nurturing students' talents is truly commendable.

Regarding Artificial Intelligence being listed as both an opportunity and a threat, it is interesting to see how technology is being considered in the strategic planning process. AI can indeed offer numerous opportunities for enhancing education and administrative processes, but it also poses challenges that need to be carefully addressed.

I was impressed with the outcome, but I hope you agree Artificial Intelligence does not give us the opportunity to personalize our thoughts. We take extraordinary pride in the culture and climates of our schools and want to make sure we use AI as a tool while recognizing and addressing the threats and complexities it presents.

As we proceed with the strategic planning process, we will contact our stakeholders for feedback and opinions. If given the opportunity, please respond with your input, so we can develop a strong strategic plan that not only moves us toward our vision, but also includes your thoughts and ideas.

We look forward to a successful, safe, and spirituallyinvigorating 2024-2025 school year. We thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

BOARD ROLE: Chair of Board Operations Committee

EMPLOYER: Compliance and Risk Health Care Professional (retired)

CONNECTION TO NDS: Proud graduate of Notre Dame Academy (Class of 1976)

SPOUSE: Steven Legerski

TIME ON BOARD: Starting 9th year on the NDS Board of Directors

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD? I was approached about an opening on the Board nine years ago and was thrilled at the opportunity. I have always thought that a Catholic education was second to none. When I graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1976 and subsequently went to college, I noted that I had already learned a lot of the course work they were teaching in my first year at college. It made my college transition so much easier. I have also seen the outstanding work the current students at NDS accomplish and it is remarkable. These students will have a wonderful future. They are bright, enthusiastic, caring, prayerful and well-rounded individuals.

WHAT MAKES THE NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS COMMUNITY EXCEPTIONAL? The NDS community is exceptional because there is such a great community spirit. The students are inspired by their teachers, their parents, the Sisters of Notre Dame and the administrators. This creates a trickle-down effect whereby the students volunteer in the community and have a positive impact in all the work they do.

YOUR HOPE FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION, PARTICULARLY AT OUR SCHOOLS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS: I hope that there will be continued support for all Catholic education in the future. For Notre Dame Schools, I expect a continued focus on the mission and vision that has put them in the position to be one of the best schools in NE Ohio.

SPOUSE: Sarah

TIME ON BOARD: Beginning 8th year on NDS Board of Directors

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD? Having children in the schools started my curiosity in the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame and the schools. I was invited to work on a project, and soon after was invited into the Buildings & Grounds Committee. As I learned more about the work of the Sisters and the strength of the Notre Dame Schools community, I became increasingly engaged in how I could support them.

WHAT MAKES THE NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS COMMUNITY EXCEPTIONAL? This community of families, faculty, staff, Sisters, Board and committee members, and alumni of NDCL, Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin all care deeply about the school and each other. This is evidenced in their tremendous engagement and support.

YOUR HOPE FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION AT OUR SCHOOLS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS: The Sisters of Notre Dame have entrusted myself and all of our Board & committee members to further their mission in our schools. The past several years, our schools and community have had considerable growth and improvement, not the least of which include a new Middle School and significant enhancements to curriculum and facilities. Most importantly, our enrollment continues to grow. It’s my hope that we all continue to engage and support this important mission.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin is proud to host the 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, October 12, 2024 on the campus of NDCL.

The event will begin at 2pm with a social hour, followed by a BBQ dinner catered by the Winking Lizard Tavern at 3pm. The induction ceremony will start approximately at 3:30pm.

2023 grad SARAH BRELAND’S Global Gap Year a worldwide experience

Few people get to see so many parts of the world in their lifetime, let alone in a year like Sarah Breland '23. After heading to the University of North Carolina after graduating from NDCL, she applied and was accepted into the university’s Global Gap year program.

UNC’s Global Gap Year Fellowship is a highly selective award given to a cohort of high school graduates who have been admitted to UNC as part of the university's early action application process. The fellowship provides students with an $8,000 stipend to fund a gap year committed to service abroad. It’s a chance to become a global citizen, develop cross-cultural competencies, and gain professional and life skills.

Breland’s travels took her to Greece, Italy, Germany, France and Spain, Indonesia, Japan, and Hawaii. Her work included research and protection of marine turtles to coral reef restoration, mangrove and beach cleanup to helping those affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires.

Majoring in Environmental Health Sciences with a concentration in Biology, she wants to follow her family into the medical field with a goal of becoming a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and joining Doctors Without Borders. Breland already has ensured enrollment in UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health.

“NDCL inspired my interest in service”, she says. “I enjoy working with others and helping those in need—from our L’Arche ministry and participating in Leadership Geauga, summer volleyball camps.”

Breland was on NDCL’s State Championship Volleyball team in 2022 and earned 32 College Credit Plus (CCP) credits while at NDCL. The immersion into cultures from around the world continue to shape her as she navigates this next chapter of her life. She can’t wait for her next adventure in 2025: working at an elephant sanctuary in Vietnam. A far way from Ohio— way to go, Sarah!

Latin Alumni to honor HYLAND AND BRITT September 22nd

Johnny Britt `75 and Leo Hyland `77 to receive Merit Award at Communion Breakfast

Congratulations to Cathedral Latin graduates Johnny Britt `75 and Leo Hyland `77 who will received the merit award from the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association on September 22nd at St. Noel Banquet Center in Willoughby Hills.

Britt is an accomplished musician, as well as a performer, songwriter, and composer and has been all over the world working with renown artists including David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, and The Temptations. In 2016, Britt released the album Marvin Meets Miles influenced by the work of Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis.

While a student at Cathedral Latin, Britt played trumpet in the marching band, symphonic band, and Jazz Lab Band. In 2016, he and his band performed at the 100th anniversary celebration of the founding of Cathedral Latin School and was a “guest player” on campus with some NDCL music classes. Britt now lives in California.

Hyland is a long-time educational administrator and currently serves as the Executive Director at Summit Educational Foundation. Prior to that, Hyland was President at Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and Cleveland Central Catholic High School. From 2003 to 2010, he was Director of Institutional Advancement at NDCL.

He and his wife, Beth, have two sons that are NDCL graduates—Brendan `10 and Jack `14.

“Beth and I are incredibly proud of the young men they have become, and we are grateful to NDCL for providing them with the quality educational experience and faith formation that has impacted them so well.”

M Cellars: A “one

day” dream

now reality for NDCL graduate Tara (Paytosh `98) Meineke

Lots of people have dreams of doing something “one day”. Traveling to Australia; starting a business; opening a winery. NDCL graduate Tara (Paytosh `98) Meineke and her husband Matt made their dream come true in 2012 by opening M Cellars Winery in Geneva, OH.

After several years as a teacher (Tara) and automotive technician (Matt), the Meinekes turned their hobby of wine into a vision: planting a vineyard and opening a world-class winery and tasting room. Their passion for wine was about to change their lives.

Like most business owners, Meineke and her husband navigated obstacles along their journey in opening the winery. Their perseverance paid off. She was named the

2024 Tasting Room Manager of the Year at the Tasting & Tap Room Expo in May. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate expertise in beverage selection, pursue higher education in beverage, and contribute to the success of their establishment. Meineke said the award motivates her to continue striving for excellence.

“Our mission at M Cellars is to celebrate the potential of winemaking in our region by handcrafting authentic wines that create meaningful connections between land, vines, and people,” Meineke says. “Our legacy is to pass this on for generations to come.”

The success didn’t come easy as the couple navigated personal trauma and a pandemic that threatened their budding winery. In January 2019, Meineke was hit headon by a drunk driver that resulted in a concussion, brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I was no longer Tara, co-owner of M Cellars Winery,” she says. “I was known as the ‘girl who got hit by a drunk driver’. I spent months trying to heal both physically and mentally from the trauma I experienced.”

Her husband, Matt, struggled to manage the business and family without her. Meineke made it her mission to fully recover and return to her former self as a tribute to those who weren’t as fortunate as she was to survive such a trauma.

“I was a walking miracle given the circumstances,” she says. “I told myself it was time to live again. I returned to being the strong, confident, and supportive mom, the female role model that the girls were desperately missing. I returned to the winery, with a comeback story to tell, and a drive to crush any hurdle in front of me. My presence was missed, and it was then I realized how big of an impact I had on our small family business.”

Soon after, another hurdle faced them and so many other business owners—the pandemic that shut restaurants and bars for months.

“It was a sink or swim moment for Matt and I and we chose to swim. Completely pivoting from our original business plan, we became a winery that offered curbside assistance, focused 100% on online sales and personally delivered wine to people’s homes either the same or next day of being ordered.”

Meineke credits their loyal customers and team at M Cellars who came back after the pandemic lockdowns were lifted as key to their quick recovery and success today. For a couple dedicated to a world-class operation and connections with their customers and community, they bounced back due to hard work and dedication.

Considering the mission of M Cellars to connect people, it’s no surprise that some of her favorite NDCL memories were of togetherness with her peers—retreats, pep rallies, and dances.

“NDCL created a foundation for my life today,” she says. “I learned critical thinking skills, how to collaborate, and how to set personal challenges. I was provided opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities and to manage time best. The curriculum made me more marketable to colleges when I applied. Sense of belonging and community was strong and I felt connected to my classmates.”

Tara and Matt Meineke met while working at a local hardware store in high school and married in 2003. They have two daughters, Ameila and Madelyn.

“People always ask me ‘what made you decide to do this’ and my response every time is this: Passion mixed with a lot of crazy; the blissful ignorance of maybe not knowing everything and the drive to do what you love.”

News and Notes from Campus

Meet Mrs. Medve

New administrative assistant joined NDCL this summer NDCL welcomed Mrs. Ashley Medve as its new administrative assistant in June. Mrs. Medve is as excited as a kindergartener for the start of the school year.

“I loved school myself and all the beginnings that a new school year brings—new shoes, school supplies, football games and the energy,” she says. “For me starting at a new school, it is even more exciting!”

Medve grew up in Euclid and attended Catholic school for 16 years—Holy Cross, VASJ, and the University of Dayton. She and her husband, Dan, have two boys: Caleb (8) and Teddy (3).

5th Generation Family!

“Growing up, Catholic education was instrumental to who I am today,” she says. “I owe a lot to my mother and grandmother. They instilled those values in me, the importance of faith and the sacraments. That has only grown in me as I raise my own family now and work in Catholic education.”

Welcome Ashley!

It doesn’t happen too often, but this year NDCL welcomes a 5th generation

NDCL joins new North Coast Conference this fall

The Lions will be part of a new athletic conference starting this fall, with many familiar schools and one new opponent joining the mix. The North Coast Conference was established in May 2023, with conference athletic play set to begin in Fall 2024. Current member high schools include Beaumont, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Elyria Catholic, Holy Name, Lake Catholic, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Padua Franciscan.

Pamela Malone named NDCL Girls Soccer Coach

Two-time state champion head coach joins NDCL this fall NDCL scored a big win even before the fall soccer season began with the hiring of two-time state champion head coach Pamela Malone. Malone brings 30-plus years of head coaching experience, as she served as the head girls soccer coach at Chagrin Falls High School from 1991-2021. She is the winningest high school female soccer coach in state history, and one of only five coaches with 350+ wins. She was the national high school coach of the year in 2021.

"Hiring a coach of the caliber of Pamela Malone will help to revitalize our program and set it up for success for years to come," said NDCL Athletic Director Jason Baxter.

There’s plenty of Latin and NDA bloodlines in the Malone family—her in-laws are Elmer `38 and Rita (Miklitsch `40) Malone, both of whom are deceased. Her brother-in-law is Mike Malone `64, and sisters-in-law Karen (Kandy) (Malone `72) Rawl, Pamela (Malone `68) Pierce and nephew Manni Malone is a 2018 NDCL grad.

Malone's early goals are simple. Individual growth in the girls as players and reignite the energy in the NDCL soccer program. Additionally, her hope would be that the athletes continue their passion for soccer and have a lifelong love of the sport.

"Sports is a great environment to develop people. I see coaching as my way to serve others. Understanding that service is a huge part of the NDCL culture, I was curious about the opportunities here. After being at one school for so long, I was ready for new challenges. I really enjoy working with young people."

Malone is active in the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), an organization whose mission is to provide an environment where any youth can experience a positive sport experience regardless of socio-economic status.

“PCA works with athletic directors, coaches, athletes and parents," Malone says. "It's a national movement to improve the experience of all those involved in youth sports." The mission of PCA is to develop people through sports. "I have been a trainer with PCA since 2016, after attending a soccer coaches' workshop in Philadelphia. The Cleveland chapter of PCA was started by Mark Shapiro, former president of the Cleveland Indians. "

“I would like to share my faith with the athletes and remind them how precious their God-given gifts and talents are. I am excited to work faith into athletics at NDCL.”

New principals join Notre Dame Elementary/Middle School:

This summer, Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes, President of Notre Dame Schools, named Mrs. Friederike Wintersteller Principal of Notre Dame Elementary School and Mrs. Joelle Coates Principal of Notre Dame Middle School.

They succeed Hoynes, who was named President of Notre Dame Schools in December, 2023.

Wintersteller has served for 10 years in administration, including 4 years as Principal of Saint Mary’s in Chardon, and as an Online Principal and Special Education Coordinator for the ESC of the Western Reserve. She intends to uphold and promote Notre Dame’s rich history and foundation of faith, while advancing community service. She holds her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, and earned her Principal Licensure (PK-9) from Ashland University. She obtained her Bachelor of Education at Westfaelische Wilhelms Universitaet Muenster in Germany.

Coates is a familiar face at Notre Dame, having been a teacher at NDES for 30 years. Her children Christopher (NDCL '19) and Jenna (NDCL '16) are graduates of NDES and NDCL. She is inspired by the faculty, staff, parents, and most importantly, the children enrolled in Notre Dame, and the feeling of welcome and calmness upon entering the campus. She believes that Catholic faith formation provides the children with a strong moral foundation. It teaches them the importance of having integrity and compassion.

NDCL Principal attends National Eucharistic Congress

This past July, 50,000+ Catholics gathered at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the first National Eucharistic Congress in nearly a century. Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Principal Mrs. Jodie Ricci was selected to attend the congress, representing Catholic education for the Diocese of Cleveland.

“It is hard for me to capture in words what I experienced at the Eucharistic Congress. My heart was deeply moved by this beautiful experience. God is truly with us in the gift of the Eucharist. HE is all we need!”

One School One Book

Notre Dame Elementary School just finished their second year of the One School One Book Program. This popular program allows students in grades Pre K to grade 5 to enjoy reading the same book beginning with a kick-off assembly. Every family is given the chosen book to be read at home. Each day in their classrooms, students answer trivia questions based on the assigned reading from the previous night. Correct answers give them an opportunity to win a prize at the culminating assembly.

Studies show that when children are engaged in reading at home with their loved ones, a love of reading is fostered and it promotes book discussions with family members. In addition, each year NDES chooses a charity to coincide with the program. This past year, End 68 Hours of Hunger was chosen as our outreach. The students generously donated and packaged food which was then distributed to area schools. This allows students in neighboring communities that otherwise may not have enough food to sustain them throughout the weekend to have enough nourishment until they return to school on Monday.

Not only does the One School One Book Program unify the school and the home with the emphasis on the importance of reading, it also provides our students a way of unifying communities and helping those in need which God has called us to do.

Capital Campaign closes in on

$11.5

million goal

$11.2M raised and counting—will you answer the call for our students?

Since announcing Leading Transformation: The Campaign for Notre Dame Schools last fall, much has happened. To date, the campaign is at 98% of its $11.5 million goal. WOW!

In May, demolition and construction began on Phases I and II of the Middle School expansion. Mr. Eric Rieger had the honors of the “first swing” with a golden sledgehammer commemorate this milestone. Recently, we got a peek inside the Middle School expansion and took a picture of the construction.

In his own words:

Mike Blaszak `66 establishes two new endowed scholarships at NDCL

Cathedral Latin alumnus shares what motivated him to make recent $100,000 commitment to NDCL

When I get my copy of Seasons and read it cover to cover, it is truly impressive to read all the accomplishments that the students, alumni, and faculty members are achieving, and the testimonials that so many share about NDCL. It is a true honor to invest in the mission and core values of this school.

I’m inspired by so many generous gifts made to the school and the people behind those gifts—Eugene `54 and Barbara Trela, Dale `95 and Lina (Penkauskas `95) Wollschleger, Jan Poponick `77, Anthony Caticchio `54, and the Preston family among others. I’m inspired by the families that I read about in Seasons. The Schneeberger Family (who I had the pleasure meeting) and The Theobald Family are examples of families sending 7 children through NDCL. What a commitment and what a sacrifice! I feel called to make my own commitment to the schools by establishing two very special endowed scholarships.

I chose to start one scholarship in the name of Gregory Slak. I got to know the Slak family in 2016. Emily is a 2016 NDCL graduate, Claire a 2012 graduate, and their mother Cynthia Slak is a 1977 NDA graduate. They shared Greg’s story with me and his battle against hypotonic cerebral palsy. The love and energy the family devoted to Greg’s care brought this “rough and tumble” guy to tears. I wanted to do something to honor that, and one of the new endowments I am starting at NDCL is The Gregory Thomas Slak Endowed Scholarship.

The second $50,000 scholarship is in my name as my own witness to my belief in NDCL’s mission and my family’s devotion to Catholic education. My brothers Jim (Latin `62) and Joe (Latin `70) and classmate (and brother-in-law!) Fred Badar `66; my sisters Jeannie and Mary who graduated from St. Stanislaus; and sister Peggy and brother John who graduated from Cleveland Central Catholic High School.

Endowed Scholarships at NDCL and NDES:

Establishing a named endowment at NDCL or NDES is a great way to leave a personal or family legacy. Endowed scholarships start at $50,000 and that initial amount can be funded over three years.

Individuals may contribute any amount to an existing endowment or the school’s Board-Designated Endowment fund.

Reunion 2024 Draws Record Attendance

Reunion 2024 took place Friday, June 7th on the campus of NDCL. Alumni classes ranged from 1952- 2019 with all three schools: Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin represented. We had a record high of over 240 guests in attendance!

Alumni shared memories, enjoyed live music, food, and tours of the NDCL. New this year was a contest for the class with the most attendees at the reunion, having a street sign on the campus of NDCL named after them. The competition was fierce, between CL Class of 1964, NDA Class of 1974 and NDCL Class of 2014. Congratulations to the NDA Class of 1974, the winner of the NDCL street sign “1974 NDA Way” for having the most attendees at the reunion!

If you missed the NDCL campus tour at the reunion or are interested in a V.I.P Tour of the NDCL Campus, contact Courtney (Rice ’98) Bacik at Courtney.Bacik@ndcl.org or 440-279-1079 or Keven Krajnak ’98 at Keven.Krajnak@ndcl.org or 440-279-1068 to schedule a campus visit or tour.

Give The Gift of a Lifetime: A PLANNED/ESTATE

GIFT TO CATHOLIC

EDUCATON AT NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS

The Notre Dame Circle

Planning for your estate and choosing the beneficiaries of your assets—namely family and charities—takes much care and just a bit of time.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School and Notre Dame Elementary School are 501 (c)3 organizations and you can list the school as a beneficiary in your will.

Dozens of Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and NDCL graduates include NDCL in their written estate plan. In addition, Board members, grandparents, and friends of the school made this a priority in their plans.

Do you have NDCL or NDES in your estate plan? Let us know so that we can include you in The Notre Dame Circle and honor your commitment during your lifetime.
